In this Bureau of Mines report, the optical detection of fires and explosions is considered fundamentally. The measured spectral radiances from methane-air ignitions are compared with the background irradiances from stray and ambient sources, and with the spectral sensitivites of various sensors. The comparison naturally suggests the optimum spectral ranges and signal processing logic that can uniquely characterize the ignition event. Both ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) are considered. Several alternate sensing methods are proposed and discussed. The development and testing of an IR system designed for use in ignition suppression devices in mines is described.

A series of diesel fuel fire experiments were conducted in the Pittsburgh Research Center's Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to determine products-of-combustion (POC) spread rates along a single entry under zero imposed airflow conditions. Six experiments with an average fire intensity of 330 kW and three experiments with an average fire intensity of 30 kW were conducted in a 1 80 m long entry which had an average 2 m height and 4 m width. POC spread rates were measured by the response time of diffusion type CO detectors, positioned at 30 m intervals, to CO concentrations 5 ppm above ambient. For the 330 kW fires, average POC spread rates of 0.22, 0.13, and 0.06 m/s were determined at 30.60, and 90 m distances from the fire. For the 30 kW fires these average spread rates were reduced to 0.08, 0.04, and 0.04 m/s. The measured maximum roof layer temperature 30 m from two of the 330 kW fire was 30 and 36"C, which is less than the 57°C alarm point of a typical mine thermal sensor. It was determined that smoke detectors can be more effective for mine fire detection than CO detectors. The experimentally determined POC spread rates can be used to provide guidance for specification of sensor spacing to improve early fire detection at zero or very low air flows.

Twelve subjects participated in an investigation of the biomechanical stresses of asymmetric lifting in stooped and kneeling postures. Three factors were manipulated in this study: Posture (stooped or kneeling), height of lift (35 or 70 cm), and weight of lift (15, 20, or 25 kg). Subjects were required to lift or lower a box every 10 seconds for a period of 2 minutes. Electromyography (PIG) of eight trunk muscles was collected during a lift in this period. The PIG data, normalized to maximum extension and flexion exertions in each posture, were input to a biomechanical model and used to predict compression and shear forces at the L, level of the lumbar spine. Results from the EMG-driven biomechanical model indicated that compression was greater when lifting to a higher shelf (p < 0.001), and indicated a significant interaction between posture and the weight of the lifting box (p < 0.01). Peak lateral shear was not significantly affected by any main effects or interactions (p < 0.05). Anterior shear was increased with increasing height of lift (p < 0.001), and also by the posture x weight interaction (p c 0.01). A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) indicated a complex relationship for recruitment of the eight trunk muscles, with the triple interaction being significant (p < 0.001). The results of this investigation will be used to evaluate safe loads for lifting in these restricted postures.

Water pollution has been an integral part of most mining operations in the past. Most mine planners had designed their mining operations with little or no regard for prevention of water pollution. The main planning element was always the economics of mineral recovery. Quite often the cheapest means of mineral recovery resulted in the largest water pollution problems. Recent water pollution laws have introduced a new economic element - water pollution control costs - to be considered in mine planning. Water pollution control costs can be extremely high. Foresighted planning can minimize these costs and provide better water pollution control. Effective pollution control preplanning can eliminate pollution from active mines and minimize pollution that may occur after completion of mining. Presently available technology can practically eliminate water pollution by treatment of the mine water. Use of water treatment during mining has no effect on the levels of water pollution after treatment ceases and the mine is abandoned. Therefore, this section of the report deals with preplanning to reduce water pollution, both present and future, by using at-source control techniques. Proper planning of mining and pollution control techniques should follow the concept of a complete, comprehensive reclamation plan. This plan should have control measures designed for all phases of mining from initiation through completion. Preplanning involves acquiring complete information concerning the future mine site, defining the reasons why mining could cause pollution from the site, and determination of available techniques to prevent or minimize formation or transportation of pollutants. Location of haulage and access roads and other mine related facilities should be included in preplanning for water pollution control. Ultimate analyses are given in three conditions-namely, (1) as received, (2) moisture free, and (3) moisture and ash free Proximate analyses and heating values are given generally in one condition -namely, as received, some are in two conditions, as received and moisture free.

The Rhyolite mercury prospect is on the south flank of Juninggulra Mountain--a large rhyolite intrusive in the Kuskokwim River region about 36 airline miles northwest of Red Devil, Alaska. Bulldozer trenching by the Bureau of Mines exposed bedrock at intervals in a 2,000-by 3,000-foot area where previous prospecting by the owners had disclosed abundant float and several in-place stringers containing cinnabar in widely varying amounts. The additional trenching indicated that the mercury mineralization in the limited area investigated was confined to erratically distributed short stringers and to small lenses, occurring in discontinuous zones in numerous silica-carbonate dikes and sills or along their altered contacts with sedimentary rocks. The geologic relationship of the mercury-bearing silica-carbonate dikes and the nearby rhyolite intrusive is similar to that existing at several other mercury mines and prospects in the. Kuskokwim region. The depth of over-burden and the presence of permafrost were serious obstacles to bulldozer trenching, and only a comparatively small part of the mineralized area was thus investigated.

"The Industrial Commission of Utah from a study of the accidents (especially the fatalities) occurring in connection with mining in the State was struck by the large number arising from lack of due care on the part of the employee injured or carelessness on the part of some fellow employee. Figures show that approximately 40% of the deaths are due to carelessness as against only ) 10% or 12% that can be laid to faulty conditions in the mines. With a view to reducing the number of these accidents an intensive campaign of education was inaugurated, conducted jointly by the Industrial Commission of Utah and the United States Bureau of Mines.Through the cooperation of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Mine Rescue Car No. 11 operating in Utah has been utilized as the means of carrying on the campaign. In making the regular training visits to the mining camps of Utah the crew of car 11 was authorized to include with the courses of instruction in Mine Rescue and First Aid, safety and health rallies, foremen's safety meetings, and appeals carried on through the public schools to stimulate an awaking of personal responsibility of miners and their familiar' in safety and health endeavor. The work was placed under the direct charge of Dr. Murray who has had previous experience in similar work and brought to the campaign helpful enthusiasm. He was assisted by Bruce Johnson, fore¬man miner of Car 11, who had been safety engineer for the U. S. Smelting Company, and R. W. Clark, first aid miner of Car 11. The expense of providing posters, literature, pledge cars, buttons, rental of special educational films and incidental expenses of foremens' meetings has been born by the Industrial Commission.Plan of the Campaign.In planning the campaign the main object was to revive as much as possible, among the workers, a spirit of responsibility for safety. Any considerable reduction of preventable accidents can be accomplished only through the workers themselves who are responsible for such accidents, therefore, the more personal the application could be made to all the workers the greater the accruing results would be."

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Spokane Research Laboratory, studied technology and methods that could reduce accidents involving surface mining equipment that collides with other vehicles or workers, or drives over an unseen road edge. These accidents are partially attributed to the lack of full visibility around these large pieces of equipment. Blind areas can be extensive and this report presents plots of blind areas for five pieces of surface mining equipment. Several technologies designed for detecting obstacles in blind areas and providing a warning to the operator were evaluated on off-highway dump trucks. These proximity warning systems included radar, sonar, GPS, radio transceiver tags, and combinations of radar and cameras. A summary of test results is presented in this report, along with guidance on effective proximity warning technology, installation and maintenance considerations, and recommendations for effective implementation. This study found several commercially available systems that could effectively warn an equipment operator of an impending collision. Several new technologies also show promise for reducing these accidents. In most applications, it is recommended that sensor-based systems be combined with video cameras to provide important alarming functions along with an actual view of the blind area.

The Bureau of Mines undertook this investigation to study methods of utilizing red mud residues from production of alumina from bauxite. Pilot-plant tests were conducted using Jamaican and Surinam red muds. Both the carbon-lime-soda sinter process and electric-arc smelting with coke and limestone were employed to recover iron and alumina. Alumina recoveries of 85 to 90 percent were obtained by the sinter process; although iron recovery was about 80 percent, the magnetic product was finely divided and difficult to separate from the gangue. Smelting red muds in the electric-arc furnace produced a pig iron with 98-percent recovery of iron; up to 84 percent of the A1203 was recovered by leaching the calcium aluminate slag with Na2C03 solution. A titania product assaying 96 percent TiO2 was recovered from the nonmagnetic portion of Surinam red mud sinter by extraction with H2SO4. Leached calcium aluminate slags and brown mud (from the combination Bayer process) are possible raw materials in the manufacture of portland cement.

This final report documents the work done by Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL) on behalf of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC) , on Contract H0122026 (which began in August of 1971) . Under this contract ADL provided technical assistance to the Bureau on a task basis on virtually all aspects of the Bureau&apos;s programs related to present and planned emergency and operational communications and miner location systems for underground coal mines. The work consisted of in- dependent investigations, analyses, experiments, breadboard and prototype hardware development, workshops and technology transfer seminars on mine communications, and on-going evaluations and guidance related to the Bureau&apos;s contracted programs on electromagnetic noise, mine communications systems, and trapped miner location. This final report documents the work in two volumes, Volume I, "Emergency and Operational Mine Communications," and Volume II, "seismic Detection and, Location of Isolated Miners." The Tables of Contents of both Volumes are included in each Volume.

This Bureau of Mines report describes how the reinforcement mechanisms of untensioned, full-column resin bolts were determined during one underground study. Both axial and transverse shear loadings were identified for two instrumented resin bolts that replaced standard resin bolts in an opera-ting room-and-pillar mining section. The strain responses of resin bolt steel cores to local axial and transverse shear loadings are described. This information was obtained from laboratory testing of resin bolts installations; it was also used to analyze the data from the underground test.

Field Demonstration of the Remote Mine Sealing System in a Coal Mine 8. 1 Selection of Field Test Site Eastern Associated Coal Corporation (EACC) offered its Federal No. 1 coal mine in Grant Town, West Virginia as the site for field testing of the remote sealing system. The choice of Federal No. 1 mine was particularly appropriate as the first attempt at fire control by remote sealing was done in this mine in 1963. EACC provided the men and equipment required for much of the initial preparation. Considerable assistance, advice, and background on coal mining technology was given by Mr. William Laird, Vice President for Research and Development, EACC, and by Mr. Lawrence Jackson, Resident Engineer at the Federal No. 1 mine. District 3 USBM office, the West Virginia Bureau of Mines, the Technical Support Group of the USBM, and Local 4047 of the United Mine Workers of America also cooperated. 8.2 Preparation of Field Test Site 8.2. 1 Underground Site Preparation The underground site chosen for the field testing was in a non-working portion of the mine within a few hundred feet of the main haulage road, as shown in Figure 80. Known as "Seven Switch, " this area was a 20 minute walk or 5 minute "jeep" trip from the man-trip shaft. Ten years having passed since this area was actively worked, considerable effort was required for gob clearing, roof bolting, rock dusting, and rejuvenating the track from the haulage road to the test area. "IntroductionIn the study of mine drainage in the red iron ore mines of the Birmingham district of Alabama, an extensive series of measurements were made in order to determine the drainage from the area overlying and adjacent to the mines. Gaging rods were generally used in measuring streams, and weirs in ditches and sometimes as a check on rod work. These tests in turn were checked by current meter tests. In all, 725 separate stream gagings and 97 weir measurements were made. Certain relationships were worked out, particularly between rod and weir tests, which permitted obtaining results that are much more accurate 'under the existing conditions, than any available formula would give. The large number of weir measurements and the period covered by the tests made it impracticable to construct a weir for each observation so portable, adjustable weirs were built. The methods used are described here for the benefit of those interested in measurement of streams in connection with a study of mine drainage or otherwise. The Drainage AreaThe area draining the mining district lies between the crest of Red Mountain and Little Shades Creek, and for convenience was divided into sub-districts adjacent to certain groups of mines. Gaging stations were established on Little Shades Creek at the upper and lower boundaries of each sub-district, also at points on the tributaries near their junction with the creek. The difference between the volumes of water flowing in Little Shades Creek as it entered and left the sub-districts represents the flow from the tributaries on both sides of the creek. Since the flow coming from the sub-districts was measured direct, the inflow from the tributaries on the opposite side of the creek can be computed from the three volumes determined."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to (1) determine from laboratory tests the feasibility of a photographic method for determining reflec-tances that may be applied to measuring in-mine mineral reflectances and (2) formulate a procedure for collecting and analyzing the data. The method uses a 35-mm camera with automatic flash and a gray-scale re-flectance standard to collect on film the reflectivity data in under-ground mineral mines. After the film is processed, the data on the photographic prints are analyzed in the laboratory with a photometer. Test results show the photographic method can provide values of reflec-tance to within ±5 pet of full scale (full scale = 100 pet). The method&apos;s usefulness for determining reflectivity values, within similar limits of absolute percent error at the lower end of the scale, however, has not been completely resolved by the study and consequently warrants further investigation. The method offers an acceptable means for collecting and analyzing reflectivity data for reflectivities at the higher end of the scale, i.e., 50 pet or above; it should be used with caution when reflectivity values are below 50 pet. Four films were evaluated; all gave relatively satisfactory results.

Highly stressed rock in stopes continues to be a primary safety risk for miners in underground mines because this condition can result in failures of ground that lead to both injuries and death. Personnel from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health studied two methods for identifying stress in rock. A seismic tomographic survey, finite-difference analysis, laboratory measurements of compression wave (ultrasonic) velocities in rock cores, and site geology were integrated to evaluate the use of seismic tomography for identifying induced pressures in an underground pillar at the Edgar Mine, Idaho Springs, CO. Electromagnetic (EM) emissions were also investigated in the Galena Mine, a deep underground mine in Idaho, in an effort to determine if these emissions could be used as indicators of impending catastrophic ground failure. Results of this research indicated that (1) seismic tomography appears to be a useful tool for determining relative stress in underground pillars, while (2) EM emissions do not appear to be significant precursors of impending catastrophic ground failure.

In 1987, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 11,069-acres of the 12,290-acre Eldorado Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-423) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Clark County, NV, adjacent to and northeast of the town of Nelson. There are inferred subeconomic resources on the Paul (gold, silver), Bel (gold, silver), Big Horn-Inez (silver, copper, lead, zinc) claims, and Montezuma (gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc) patented claim group in the Eldorado study area. Because of lack of exposures, tonnage and grade on these properties could not be determined. No resources were identified for the other five properties examined in the area. The southern two-thirds of the area is in the Eldorado mining district, a base- and precious-metal district which has been intensely explored for over 100 years. Nine claim groups were examined in the study area. Eight claim groups are within the Eldorado district and include the Montezuma (patented -M.S. 3966), Bel, Eldorado, VAR, SINJUN, Paul, Rusty Bit, and Big Horn-Inez. One property, the Flintstone claim group, is north of the Eldorado mining district at the north end of the study area.

This is the first of a series of reports dealing with development of a method of strengthening bituminous-coal-mine roof. Later reports will describe the progress made with injecting high cohesive and adhesive bonding agents into bedding planes and mine tests of roof strata strengthened by the bonds formed. The concept of strengthening roof strata in coal mines by inserting steel rods in the form of bolts has been widely accepted by the coal industry. The benefits of increased production and safety derived from this type of roof support has more than justified the increased cost of roof bolting. However, not all coal-mine roof structure is amenable to this type of support, and failures occur owing to the heterogeneity and variable character of mine-roof strata.3/

The flammability of trichloroethylene vapors in air has been determined in a 7-inch cyclindrical vessel. Saturated flammable mixtures were formed with air at atmospheric pressure between 30° C (86° F) and 82° C (180° F); the trichloroethylene concentrations at these temperatures are 12.5 (lower) and 90 (upper) volume-percent, respectively. Further study is necessary to assess the effects of different variables on the flammability of this material. INTRODUCTION Trichloroethylene (TCE) (ClHC = CCl2), sold under various trade names (Blacosolv, Perm-A-Clor, Tri, Triad, Triclene, Trivec, Tromex, Vapoclean, Vapoclor, Westrosol, etc.), is an important industrial chemical. A summary of its physical and chemical properties is given in table 1. It is used to degrease metals, leather, and textiles, to extract residual oils from vegetable oil cakes, for dry cleaning, and in soap. It is a powerful solvent for fats, resins, bitumens, rubber, sulfur, and phosphorus. Several explosions in which trichloroethylene was involved prompted an investigation by the Bureau of Mines to determine the conditions under which such accidents can occur.

"The premium on gold in London, reflecting the further depreciation of the pound sterling, has risen from about 22 per cent as noted in these reports for December, to about 28%. This will enable more South African gold mines to come into the profitably ;reducing class, and will also tend to increase the gold production from that region.Figures are now at hand showing the drop that occured in the sold output in the Transvaal, South Africa, during 1919, in which year 8,330,091 ounces of gold were produced against 8,418, 292 ounces in 1918, a decrease of 88,200 ounces. Annual gold output from this, the most important gold area in the world, has dropped almost one million ounces in the past three years, as the following table shows:Although the decrease in not as marked comparatively as that of 1918 over 1917, it is a further indication of the general world-wide curtailment of gold production, and the steady decline in production everywhere that is going on and will continue until some rational means is found to stimulate production, or until conditions return to normal.The subject of relief for the gold miner has received attention in all parts of the world, particularly in the United States and South Africa in the past few years, but in spite of all the plane that have been formulated to remedy the situation none have yet been adopted anywhere, due mainly to great danger of tampering with the gold standard. In the United. States a plan has advanced by H. N. Lawrie of the American Mining Congress to tax the new gold entering into manufacture of jewelry or the arts in general, as furnishing some measure of increased compensation to unprofitable gold mining.Gold production in Australia, as indication by figures issued by the Australian Mines department, shows a marked decrease, and for the first ten months of 1919 amounted to 914,957 ounces against 1,073,317 ounces for a similar period in 1918. Western Australia produces about two thirds of all the gold rained on that continent. The total gold production of Australia for 1919 will reflect the universal decrease in output.Ever since June 7, when the embargo on the export of gold Was lifted, there has been steady and heavy outflow of gold from this country, as a consequence of which considerable gold accumulated during the war has been exported. The work described was performed to determine whether sulfur compounds of the thienothiophene class occur in crude oil. The presence or absence of various classes of sulfur compounds in crude oils is of interest and value to petroleum science. The Bureau of Mines, for the first time, identified hydro-carbon products of desulfurization that point directly to the identity of two individual thienothiophenes, namely 3-methylthieno[2,3-b]thiophene and 2-meth-ylthieno[3,2-b]thiophene, in Wasson, Texas, crude oil. These identifications, described in detail, were accomplished using microdesulfurization, mass spectrometry, and gas-liquid chromatography.
