This paper is the first of a series that is to appear on smelting in the lead blast furnace. The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace by direct experimentation, and to correlate the behavior of the furnace at various times with the main factors governing the operation of the blast furnace, and metallurgical losses. Because of the increasing demand for fluorspar , investigation of the deposits of the Gila district in Grant County , New Mexico , was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in 1943 with the cooperation of the Federal Geological Survey . It was the purpose of the investigation to assist owners and lessees to develop their properties and to attempt to estimate ore reserves that might be available to supply a 300- ton mill that was under construction at Gila . Field work was begun June 14 , 1943 , and ceased August 16 , 1943. Seven veins were trenched and sampled .

Increase the productivity of domestic mining operations by improving the performance of rock drilling systems. Approach Investigate the use of chemical solutions at zero surface charge concentrations as drilling fluid additives to enhance penetration rates and extend bit life. Background Bureau researchers have investigated the use of chemical additives to enhance drilling performance and have found that the most efficient drilling occurred when the drilling fluid was able to maintain a zero surface charge (ZSC) on the rock surface. Laboratory drilling studies using 5/8-inch diameter diamond-impregnated coring bits on rock types such as quartzite, granite, taconite, and marble. Cationic compounds were used as the surface charge neutralizing additives during these tests. The drilling studies demonstrated enhanced drilling performance, however, only at the singular additive concentration that produced the ZSC condition. Bureau researchers made a breakthrough when they found that polyethylene oxide, although a nonionic polymer, was able to maintain the ZSC condition over a wide range of concentrations. Success using polyethylene oxide as the drilling fluid additive during subsequent laboratory tests prompted testing under field conditions.

There have appeared, from time to time, comparisons of various features of coal mining practice in the United States and Great Britain. A recent, article, appearing in a British journal, points out that the American miner produces 3 1/2 times as much coal per shift as the miner, at one-half the cost, and proceeds to explain the natural industrial, and engineering causes which lead to this result. Amon« he reasons advanced. is that the American coal miner enjoys the advantage of more easily worked seams of coal, due to the fact that the coal mining industry in the United States is of more recent date than in Great Britain. The latter qualification is not correct, because where these advantages exist, they will persist. The coal beds of the United States are not buried deeply, except in the remote parts of the country, as in the Uinta Basin of Utah. The article referred to states that many of our miners are still employed on out seams reached by "adits", (which we term entries), or by vertical shafts of moderate depth. It is probable in fact that the great bulk of the coal of the United States is taken out from a depth of less than 400 feet.

For a number of years the Bureau of mines has conducted semi-annual surveys to determine the changes in the characteristics of the motor gasoline being sold in the United States. The Bureau of Mines surveys, from April, 1917, to January, 1943, indicated a progressive decrease in the end point range. The survey for July, 1923 showed an interruption in this progressive decrease. This interruption, as shown in Table 1, in the line marked "Difference," was apparently a definite one, for the data obtained in the surveys of July, 19233, January, 19244, and the present one, apparently substantiate it. The figures in Table 1 were obtained by averaging the end points of the least volatile and most volatile samples of gasoline. For example, of 850 samples analyzed in 1919, the 10 per cent (85 samples) having the highest end points and the 10 per cent having the lowest end points were grouped, and the end points of each group averaged. These averages are represented in the table as the "Maximum 10 per cent" and the ?Maximum 10 per cent," respectively. The same scheme was used on the succeeding surveys.

The Bureau of Mines made bench-scale laboratory tests on a sample of typical Florida phosphate slime to determine alumina and phosphate extractions obtainable by agitation leaching, by baking and curing, and by a leach-electrolysis scheme. Recovery of mineral values from leached slime pulps by resin-in-pulp ion exchange contact and the reaction of the leached pulps to filtration, flocculation, and settling were also investigated. The best extractions of alumina and phosphate were obtained by (l) agitation leaching with sulfuric, hydrochloric, or nitric acid at an elevated temperature or (2) curing or baking the slime with sulfuric acid. Alumina extractions ranged from 80.8 to 90.0 percent and phosphate extractions ranged from 93.3 to 98.4 percent when the slime was leached at 90° C with sulfuric, hydrochloric, or nitric acids. Baking the slime with sulfuric acid at 200° C for 4 hours yielded an alumina extraction of 92.3 percent and a phosphate extraction of 97.0 percent, whereas curing with sulfuric acid at 100° C for 24 hours gave slightly higher alumina and phosphate extractions. Flocculation and settling properties of the slime were virtually unaffected in all cases. Filter area requirements, although somewhat improved as compared to untreated slime, remained relatively high. The lowest filter area requirement obtained was 44 square feet per ton of dry solids treated per day. Contacting leached slime pulps with ion exchange resins depleted the leach pulps of solubilized values; however, the filtration and settling properties of the barren pulps were unaffected. A leach-electrolysis scheme resulted in some concentration of solubilized phosphorus, but the method showed little promise of being commercially feasible.

"Sand is one of the most useful and, fortunately, one of the most common mineral commodities. By far the largest proportion of the production is used in construction, including all forms of building, concrete and paving, sand for this purpose is produced in every State in appreciable amounts. Excluding send used for railroad ballast, molding sand stands not in tonnage produced, followed by glass sand.Special sands. In addition to the above, many grades of sands, with special characteristics, are used in industrial processes, and may be classed in a group as ""special sends"". This includes filter sand, sand blast sand, engine sand, abrasive send, fire or furnace send, special flooring sand, roofing sand used as a finish for prepared roofings and pottery placing sand sand blast and filter sand have been discussed in previous reports.Very few send companies depend upon the production of any one of these grades, as their source of revenue. They are generally especially prepared from the bank run of sand by different methods of screening or washing, or may, in some instances, be by-products from the production of ether grades. Many companies not now producing them might be able to supply local demands by a slight addition to their plant. In nearly all cases, they command a better price than the usual grades of building sand.Definitions and Properties.Engine sand, or traction sand, as it is sometimes called, is used to prevent the slipping of the driving wheels of locomotives, or other self-propelled vehicles, on wet or slippery rails. Its greatest use is, of course, for railroad locomotives, but street cars use considerable amounts and mine locomotives require its use. As the send must be very dry when used, most consumers have their can drying equipment, so it is often shipped damp, with its natural water content on what resulting from washing by the producer."

The service given by a flame safety lame is twofold: It provides a safe light and it gives evidence of the condition of the mine atmosphere relative to the presence of methane and the deficiency of oxygen. Since the development of portable electric mine lamps, flame safety lamps are little used for lighting,but their use as detectors is as extensive and important as ever. A flame safety lamp in the hands of a trained user will definitely how methane concentrations as low as 1 percent, which in well below the lower explosive limit of methane and air. However, this does not always suffice, especially when making studies of mine ventilation, where it may be desireable to detect concentrations below 1/2 of 1 percent.

[The geophone has occupied a prominent position as a mine signalling device since its first introduction. The Bureau has carried out tests at different times with a view to improving the early geophones. The following paper describes briefly the adaption of the vacuum-tube audio frequency Amplifier to a new form of geophone. It is not intended to convey the idea that the results described are sufficient to warrant the drawing of definite conclusions as to the practicability of the electrical geophone, but the data and tests liven herein are made public because of their possible use to the industry and as a result of inquiries received as to the feasibility of such adaptions and modifications of the early geophones. Because of the limited time available to the authors, only one geophone with its auxiliary amplifier was constructed. As is well known, two geophones are necessary in order to determine the direction of a sound. Although the principles upon which the electrical geophone operates appear to be fundamentally correct, it is not possible to state whether two such devices 'rill function as efficiently, (as regards determining direction of sound) as the present geophone. In order to operate efficiently as a direction finder, the amplifiers of the electrical geophone must each amplify with exactly the same degree of magnitude. By proper design and adjustment this can probably be accomplished without greatly complicating the design. inasmuch as audio frequency amplification is used, no tuning; is necessary as is the case with tuned radio-frequency circuits. The same filament and plate batteries can be used to operate the amplifiers and by the use of dry cell tubes, requiring shall filament and plate currents, it if believed that a compact, portable and practical instrument can be evolved. Further investigations of the electrical geophone should be conducted to determine the points outlined in this preliminary report.]

To furnish the information frequently requested by producers and suppliers as to the fuel requirements of the Federal Government , the Bureau of Mines , with the cooperation of the consuming departments and establishments , has collected the data herein , showing the Government's fuel consumption during the fiscal year ended June 30 , 1930. The following tables show the quantities and kinds of fuels consumed by the Federal Government in each of its departments and their principal branches , in each State , and in Alaska , Hawaii , Panama Canal Zone , Porto Rico , and the Virgin Islands . The separate departments and establishments were asked to supply information for each Federal building or other plant and , as to vessel fuel , the amount loaded at each port of supply . Fuels consumed in internal combustion engines are not included . The report does not include fuels used by Post Offices of the fourth class , since their fuels are not purchased by the Federal Government but are covered by an allowance in each case for light and heat . In some cases the data supplied represent receipts , which are approximately equivalent to consumption . The present study is believed to be the first effort to bring together the data representing the Government's requirements for the various fuels which it consumes . Figures showing the coal consumed by the Federal Government were gathered for the year 1922. These data are shown in an article by O. P. Hood and R. H. Kudlich of the Bureau of Mines , contributed as a chapter to " Industrial Coal ; Purchase , Delivery and Storage , " published by the American Engineering Council . The figures of coal consumption presented herewith are approximately comparable with those published for 1922 , a relatively small difference being due to the fact that the 1922 figures include the Philippine Islands and all other territory in which any coal was consumed by the Government . At the present time , the only data on Government fuel consumption that are published regularly are those compiled by E. B. Swanson , chief economist of the petroleum economics division of the Bureau of Mines . These are published annually by the Bureau of Mines in " Sources and Distribution of Major Petroleum Products , Atlantic Coast States , " and by the bureau in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute in the annual " National Survey of Fuel Oil Distribution . " It is believed that the data herewith will prove of interest and value to the fuel industries as well as to Government consumers and that it will also afford a basis for measuring future trends in the use of the various fuels by the Federal Government . Figures showing the quantities of the various kinds of fuels consumed by each of the executive departments and independent establishments , are given in Table 1. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A testing alit through rock strata is being developed by the Mining Division of the United States bureau of Mines at Mount Weather, Va., and the tests discussed in this report were conducted there. This experimental alit in rock, constitutes a typo of laboratory where mine conditions can be closely simulated and where many of the variables likely to occur in an actual mine can be eliminated or at least controlled with reasonable effort, thus affording maximum opportunities to secure fundamental data uncomplicated by extraneous conditions. The authors wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance and cooperation of several members of the Mining Division, particularly C. F. Jackson, chief engineer, McHenry Mosier, associate mining engineer, and G. E. McElroy, supervising engineer, mine ventilation.

All pipelines used to transport liquid fuels over coal mines are potentially hazardous; however, this publication deals only with dangers in transporting gasoline. Since transporting gasoline by this method is an established practice, the hazards connected therewith should he recognized by coal-mine operators and pipeline companies so that every known precaution may be used to reduce and keep the hazards to a minimum. The purpose of this paper is to direct the attention of coal-mine operators and employees, pipeline-company officials, and other interested persons to the explosion and fire hazards that arise from seepage of gasoline into underground mines. A hazard is not only presented in an individual mine when gasoline enters underground workings; but, in cases where mines are interconnected, a hazard exists in mach such mine.

The present discussion first presents data to justify the fireproofing of mine shafts. This is followed by a brief outline of fireproofing methods with examples from practice. A summary of authoritative recommendations on fire prevention concludes the discussion. Acknowledgment is made to D. J. Parker, district engineer, Mine Safety Station, Salt Lake City, Utah, for his valuable criticism of the paper. Fireproofing a mine shaft implies lining the shaft with fireproof material or rendering fireproof the material already composing the shaft lining. A brief study of the part mine shafts and shaft stations have played in disastrous end tragic underground fires furnishes convincing evidence that every possible effort to make all mine shafts fireproof is amply justified. The fire hazard in coal minus obviously is much greater than in metal mines. In this discussion the point of views is mainly that of the metal miner; it is tine opinion of the writer that all fires in metal mines are preventable.

Development of methanometers and anemometers for underground use in coal mines is reviewed. The first semicontinuous recording methanometer was developed in 1961 in West Germany. The Bureau of Mines developed an instrument using; pellesters that was a continuous recording methanometer. Expansion of freon gas created a vacuum which pulled the methane-air mixture through a tube to an electrically heated, catalyst-impregnated pellester where the mixture was burned. The National Coal Board of England developed a continuous recording methanometer based on the principle of the Davy flame safety lamp. A thermo-pile was used to sense the hurt output of the flame. Finally the Bureau of Mines improved its methanometer by eliminating the freon gas and using a diffuser head to a monitor methane-air mixtures. Development of recording anemometers proceeded from the use of a photo¬cell and light source to sense rotation of the Biram-type anemometer blades to the use of a Hall detector to sense, rotation by measurement of electromagnetic pulses.

Extraction of silver from silver mill tailings by an electrolytic oxidation procedure was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Various parameters affecting silver extraction, such as electrolysis time, particle size, and dissolution of the silver as the tetrachloro or cyanide complex, were studied at 30° C with an electrolyte concentration of 20 weight-percent sodium chloride. Resulting silver extractions ranged from 77 to 90 percent, depending on the tailings being treated. Concomitant extraction of mercury ranged between 90 and 95 percent. Power consumption was 52 to 90 kilowatt-hours per ton for the tailings investigated. Comparative experiments using direct cyanidation resulted in extraction of 46 to 82 percent of the silver and 20 percent of the mercury. Cyanide consumption ranged from 3.3 to 9.4 pounds per ton of tailings, depending on the tailings being treated. Silver and mercury were recovered from leach solutions by precipitation on iron powder, followed by conventional distillation and fire refining steps.

The presence of sulphur compounds in petroleum and its products is, generally speaking, undesirable, and the problems involved in removing such compounds are of great importance to the petroleum refiner and to the manufacturer of gasoline. There are several types of these compounds which are dissimilar in physical and chemical characteristics, as evidenced by different objectionable features which they exhibit, and special treatments have been developed to meet conditions existing in various products. This paper deals with the treatment of natural-gas gasoline for the removal of certain sulphur compounds which, if not removed, impart on objectionable odor and in addition badly discolor the product. The presence of this particular type of sulphur compounds is detected by the "doctor" test.* In some instances natural-gas gasoline is purchased on "doctor" test specifications, and the ordinary purchaser, while not buying on "doctor" specifications, is insistent in his demand for a water white product. Gasoline which fails to meet the "doctor" test, if not received by the buyer within a few weeks after time Of manufacture, may be "off color" enough to warrant a deduction from the market price.

"INTRODUCTION The predominant characteristic of powdered mica is the thin -plate shape of the particulars, and the thinner the plates, the more enhanced is this characteristic. Consequently, it is frequently desirable to grade mica according to the thickness of the plates. Concerning the various possible methods for grading mica, very little has been published. There is also no information on the relative quantities of mica per given range of plate thickness. This paper presents a graphical method that shows how these quantities are distributed and how the different methods of grading compare.CUMULATIVE BULK DENSITYBulk density, which is an indirect measure of the plate thickness, was determined in a small cylindrical cup of 3.37 cubic centimeters volume. The mica was placed in the cup under a standard procedure. The densities thus measured checked these determined in a 273 cubic centi¬meter cup with less than a 2 percent error.In calculating cumulative densities it is important to know how they are averaged. In any grading operation the bulk density of a series of fractions is determined. Starting with the lowest density fraction, the cumulative percent under-density can be calculated through the various fractions. It is possible that quantity may be measured by volume or weight and that the averaging may be done by a number of methods. However, experimentally it has been shown that the quantity must be by volume and that the averaging must be arithmetic. This is illustrated in table 1, in which the calculated and actual bulk densities are listed."

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has in progress a study or the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines. A major problem of this study is to compare the deliveries calculated from the gas pipe-line flow formulas commonly used, with the metered deliveries from pipe lines in operation. In order to obtain such comparisons a series of tests has bean made on 25 operating pipe lines in Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, and California ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Study of the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines was made under the general supervision of H.
