Answer: Asking them to fell only half. Such was the charge recently put forth to Controlled Demolition Group (CDG), Yorkshire, UK when they were called to Casablanca, Morocco to provide a stunning demolition effect for the upcoming Universal Pictures film Spy Game, starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. Director Tony Scott (True Romance, Enemy of the State) contacted the renowned demolition firm after seeing their work on television and receiving recommendations from explosives manufacturers. The film’s producers then asked the CDG team if they could bring down half of an apartment block as part of a dramatic suicide bomber sequence.

A blast site incident has just occurred. Tensions are high, and, as the blaster, you’re in charge of the crisis at hand. Your mind is reeling, your thoughts frantic. The main areas of concern for you at the scene are to deal with immediate problems...aid the injured, take a head count, assess the damage, call emergency response, contact company headquarters, calm the neighbors, update your customer, and respond to the press on site. You feel as if all the bases have been covered...but, then again, have they? One of the biggest mistakes blasters and their companies can make is not including their Insurance carrier in the critical on-site accident procedures and emergency call list. Unfortunately, many companies believe that they are immune to the perils that can often, within a matter of minutes, create chaos that only happens to someone else.

Torpedoing Wells. – On the completion of the drilling, or when the production is found to decrease, it is usual to “torpedo” the well to increase the flow. This process was patented in 1862 by Colonel Roberts, who believed, with many others, that the oil was contained in crevices in the rock, which might not have been tapped by the bore-hole. He therefore proposed the use of nitroglycerine, gunpowder, or other explosive, to break up the rock at the bottom of the well, so that these rich “pockets” might be brought into communication with the well.

Pre-blast surveys are used to document the condition of a structure prior to the commencement of blasting activities. They provide the best means of determining the pre-existence of visible cracking and deterioration in a structure before blasting is initiated. A small investment in a good pre-blast survey, coupled with good public relations, could mean a large cost savings for a company in the future.

A European Directive on Identification & Traceability of explosives came into effect on the 4th of April 2008. This directive is intended to establish a harmonised system for the unique identification and traceability of all packaged explosives, detonators, reels of detonating cord and primers used in civil applications across the European Union. The directive must be adopted into the national legislation of each European Union member state by the 5th of April 2009 with compliance achieved throughout Europe by the 5th of April 2012. The requirements of the Directive apply to all explosives manufactured, used and imported into the European Union from 5th April 2012.

In an underground mining environment, the primary method of firing a blast is using a combination of an electric detonator and a detonating cord to initiate the Nonelectric detonators. This method has been in use since the 1970’s. A firing line is used which can be subjected to damage and the need for constant testing and maintenance.

A South Africa iron ore mine reported a decline in blast performance and ore and waste fragmentation. Preliminary investigation by the explosives services company found that the straight gassed bulk emulsion was breaking down and collapsing inside of some loaded slept blastholes. The bulk emulsion loaded at the subject site was manufactured in country and shipped to various clients throughout the region, with normal function in blasts at other sites. Historically, the bulk formulation emulsion being used at the subject mine site also performed well and without issue. This raised the question, “why is this bulk emulsion now breaking down and not firing in blastholes?”. Iron ore mines are not typically associated with reactive or acidic ground, and ground sample reactivity testing against the emulsion confirmed this. So, if not reactive ground or acidic water, then what is causing the emulsion to breakdown?

Due to their high amount of stored energy, explosives have been the cause of many serious injuries and fatalities over the last centuries. Despite safety advances and awareness in the last decades, injuries and fatalities continue to occur at mining operations due to blasting. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, from 1978 to 2001, blasting incidents claimed 106 lives and were responsible for over 1000 injuries in mines in the US. The main causes of incidents found today are flyrock, blast area security and premature detonations. The concerted efforts of the mining and explosives industries and labour and government agencies have greatly improved the safety record of blasting in mines.

This abstract explores the historical progression and key advancements in electronic detonator technology highlighting its impact on the industry as well as the challenges in deploying these types of technologies. Electronic detonators represent a significant departure from traditional initiation systems offering precise timing capabilities and improved reliability and safety. The early development of electronic detonators can be traced back to the late 20th century with the introduction of basic electronic initiation systems. These early iterations provided a glimpse into the potential for greater control and accuracy in blasting operations. As technology progressed, electronic detonators underwent significant refinement incorporating advanced features such as programmable delay times, multiple firing sequences, expanded blast size and enhanced communication capabilities. These advancements revolutionized the way explosives are deployed in mining and demolition applications enabling engineers to tailor blasts to specific geological or environmental conditions and structural requirements. One of the most notable developments in electronic detonator technology is the integration of microprocessor-based control systems. Any organization that subjects its activities to a continuous improvement methodology, aiming to optimize their processes and services, must be able to adequately measure the results of the implemented changes to pursue better outcomes. This is no different for mining companies. When it comes to blasting, an accurate fragmentation analysis can correlate blast design and rock mass parameters to particle size distribution, enabling us to further analyze the correspondence of specific design patterns, applied to specific rock mass properties and the result in measured fragmentation indicators. Over time, many tools were developed for us to obtain PSD data, albeit each of them had their own shortcomings. The first ones to be developed involved photographing the muck pile including a scale object, uploading those photos to a PC, and using specialized software to analyze each one. As a result, analysts would get a PSD curve that served as reference for the performance of the blast. This method, which is still used, has major shortcomings. The most obvious one is that it is only able to capture a slice of the blast, which corresponds to the exposed section of the muck pile the analyst has access to, and even there its reach is limited to the areas that are safe for getting close enough for placing the scale, which are not many. Consequently, this is a very limited way to get a fragmentation performance assess for a blast. Currently, autonomous systems are capable of taking continuous pictures of the muck pile. Installed on a shovel, conveyor belt or crusher feed, these systems can take a continuous stream of pictures that are later analyzed automatically without the need of human intervention. These systems greatly increase the volume of data and, consequently, we have a PSD curve that is more representative of the blast performance. However, this technology still had issues when trying to sample front end loaders mining operations or getting results from underground blasting due to the inherent difficulties of these operations. New algorithms used for capturing and processing data for front end loaders can overcome the harsh environment of their operations and produce PSD data in high vibration environments and difficult mining angles. For underground mining, algorithms can be used to sample each truck exiting the mine, giving a reliable source of fragmentation analysis that can be traced back to their stope of origin. The development of this technology extends the existing system’s capabilities and helps us in our efforts to improve fragmentation results with each blast.

From 2007 to 2009, one North American Quarry and Construction Business experienced a series of flyrock incidents. In the spring of 2009, this business declared that the frequency and severity of Flyrock Incidents had reached an unacceptable level. A Flyrock Elimination Program was launched.

Mining tradition holds that a parallel round underground can not be any deeper than it’s smallest face dimension. ln other words, a mine using a 12’ (3.7 m) high by 24’ (7.3 m) wide room and pillar mine, the deepest pull that can be achieved is plus or minus 12’ (3.7 m). After experience with decking of rounds in a 12’ (3.7 m) diameter shaft to achieve more than 12’ (3.7 m) advance per round, the concept of deepening the pull on horizontal parallel rounds seemed to be a feasible concept. Tests were conducted in a conventional room and pillar metal mine with a round size of 12’ (3.7 m) high by 24’(7.3 m) wide. Standard rounds were drilled with a 16’ (4.9 m) steel as parallel rounds to an average depth of 14.5’ (4.4 m). The average depth of pull on these rounds was about 13’ (4.0 m). Using the available drilling equipment, 20’ (6.1 m) drill steel was used to drill holes to an average depth of 18’ (5.5 m). Five rounds were drilled and shot with a resulting aven$e pull of 16.2’ (4.9 m) or 90 % of drilled depth. Rounds were designed with decked bum cuts to maximize depth of pull in the cut area An innovative method of de&mining drilling accuraq was used to estimate it’s effect on depth of pull in the rounds. This method used a standard automatic 35-mm camera and scaling to determine the average drill deviation for many of the holes in the rounds.

Recent full-scale field studies involving single-hole charges fired to free faces under a wide range of operating conditions have delivered precious insights into airblast characteristics and propagation. The field tests involved production blasthole diameters in the range 89 to 406 mm (3 ½ to 16 in), bench heights in the range 9 to 24 metres (30 to 79 ft), burden ratios (burden/hole diameter) in the range 14 to 51, stemming ratios (stem height/hole diameter) in the range 11 to 36, explosive types of ANFO, heavy ANFO and pumped emulsion, and both solid-column and double-decked charge configurations. Around 700 measurements of peak amplitude and wave shape were made in all directions (0 to 360 deg) from the free face, from 38 single-hole tests in nine North American operating quarry/mine environments. The most striking observations were the strong dependence on directionality of the wave propagation parameters and wave frequency, the consistency of wave shape which resembled the modified Heelan wavelet, and the occasional appearance of distinct, multiple pulses from single events, shown to be echoes/reflections from quarry faces. In-hole deck charging failed in this study to achieve expected peak overpressure reductions, with the peak overpressure levels in Pascals/psi/millibars being approximately 40% higher than the as-charged weights. Inter-deck delay times in excess of around 25 ms are required for effective reduction of peak overpressure levels from front-row holes. Simple linear-superposition models based on synthetic wavelets applied to large production blasts produce composite waveforms which capture the important features of the actual pressure-time history, and correlate well with measured waveforms.

Seismography is an extremely important subject in the context of rock blasting, especially in the current scenario, which involves the need for increased controls due to the growth of urban areas near open-pit mining operations. Worldwide, communities are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental and social impacts associated with mining activities. Therefore, maintaining good relationships with these stakeholders is essential to preserve the social license to operate and to comply with current legislation. This situation is exemplified in an open-pit iron mine near the capital of Minas Gerais, Brazil, where the community is located less than 40 meters from the pit boundaries. Blasting activities within the mining area occur at distances less than 500 meters from the nearest community, making continuous seismograph monitoring necessary to ensure that operational conditions are maintained without compromising exploitation efficiency. The threshold for peak particle velocity, according to Brazilian Standard 9653:2018 by ABNT, is 15 mm/s at frequencies around 4 Hz. However, even though the peak particle velocity commonly registered was inferior to 3 mm/s, there were still complaints from nearby residents regarding human discomfort. To further reduce vibration levels, a study was conducted to implement a new blast design, considering factors such as reducing bench height, altering the hole delays, maintaining the maximum charge per delay, and adjusting the drilling pattern without negatively affecting rock fragmentation quality. Following the implementation of the revised blasting parameters, seismographic measurements in the region decreased to below 0.6 mm/s. This significant reduction in ground vibrations contributed to minimizing community disturbances and fostering a more positive relationship between the company and its surrounding residents.

Donna Summer wrote and recorded a song in 1983 with Michael Omartian called, “She Works Hard for the Money.” The song was inspired by her encounter with an exhausted rest room attendant, Onetta Johnson, who is mentioned in the song by name, and featured on the album’s back cover. ISEE President James Daley, in the May/June 2019 in The Journal of Explosives Engineering discussed the Six Pillars related to the ISEE. We will use the Internal Processes pillar to frame this discussion. The Internal Process Pillar includes five separate sub-committees – we will see how this concept applies to both ATF Explosives record-keeping compliance and business process compliance in general. Reactive ground is ground that undergoes a spontaneous exothermic reaction after it comes into contact with nitrates. This is commonly caused by inert rock hosting sulphide minerals, such as pyrites that act as the reagent. The presence and subsequent rate of reaction with nitrate based bulk explosives can be difficult to predict. Once identified, only explosives that are tested and proven to be compatible with the reactive ground may only be used. These typically take the form of inhibited ammonium nitrate emulsion blended with a limited volume of ANFO or porous prilled ammonium nitrate (PPAN) to ensure that all AN prills in the blend are wholly encapsulated and thus protected from the reactive ground. The requirement for high emulsion content bulk products limits the suite of products available for use to high energy, and high expense products. Further, if chemically sensitised products are used, charged holes must be left unstemmed to allow for gassing to occur, adding delay and exposing the blast crew to an unconfined charge in reactive ground. A range of inhibited products has been developed that are solid sensitised and can be bulked to as low as 0.9 g/cc (56.2 lb/ft3). The use of a solid sensitiser enables stemming to occur immediately after each hole is charged, confining any unplanned detonation more safely within the rock mass. The effective and precise manufacture of bulked inhibited products required a new and innovative Mobile Processing Unit (MPU) design. This MPU required the ability to blend two solid raw materials (AN prill & sensitiser) along with two liquid ingredients (AN emulsion and process fuel). This MPU has been designed, manufactured and has used successfully to manufacture low density inhibited explosives. This paper presents an innovative shift in inhibited bulk products with specific reference to their manufacture and application.

Blasting as a process is the emplacement of industrial explosives into blast holes suitably located to a free surface and detonated. Every blast hole containing a certain amount of explosive charge undergoes impulsive loading when detonated and results in the dynamic transfer of a powerful shock wave to the surrounding rock. It is the shock wave that brings about rock breakage when the tensile stress produced upon reflecting from the change in material density or free face overcomes that of rock material tensile strength. However, this shock wave comes along with unwanted destructive consequences such as damage to remaining rock, ground vibration, noise and fly rock. The above mentioned consequences pose a great threat to the Community of Wusakile, Kitwe as Mopani Copper Mines Plc wishes to increase its production by expanding the pit towards the community that lies within 150 m (164 yd) from the pit rim. As a requirement from the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), all blasting operations close to the community must maintain at least below the maximum vibration threshold of 10 mm/s (0.3937 in/s) PPV-Peak Particle Velocity or else risk closure of the mine (AMC,2009). In order to satisfy the above statement, a good understanding of explosives is required. This paper therefore presents the phenomenology of rock breakage by explosives with much emphasis on electronic blasting and how best this process can be controlled in densely populated communities. Factors affecting maximum projection distance such as, size of the fragment, shape of the fragment, angle of projection, the state of confinement of an explosive charge, were also studied. In addition, design faults, deviation in implementation and unforeseen geological conditions were also considered. The paper discusses the above facts based on research.

The explosives, mining, and heavy civil industries consistently battle the uncertainty that is associated with working with a heterogenous medium like rock in blasting. This has led to studies to increase fundamental understanding of material response under dynamic loading that is associated with blasting. This study looks at the dynamic strain associated with blasting the lab Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) testing while also building off of previous studies with the goal of better understanding the dynamic forces that are enacted on a geologic body during a blast loading event. This is required in order to advance geologic blast response modeling. This is achieved through analyzing the stress and strain values for each specimen that are calculated from strain data collected with a SHPB. Based on this data, the dynamic material response characteristics are able to be determined. Tests were conducted on five Berea Sandstone specimens with a rough length to diameter ratio (L/D) of 1.0. The strain data from these tests were then used to create stress strain curves as well as charts depicting failure stress to both strain rate and failure particle velocities. The tests conducted returned similar results to previous tests results on Berea Sandstone while also showing a correlation between strain rate at failure and failure particle velocities. While further research is needed, there is evidence that SHPB test data could be used in conjunction with the MBF model. The MBF model states that the peak particle velocity (PPV) of blast vibrations can be correlated with deformation (strain) at a given point. With a further understanding of dynamic material response correlated to PPV measurements, further refinement could allow for better prediction of blast performance.
