Energy released by the explosive is typically partitioned in brisance, heave and losses. The fact that energy released in the P-V expansion curve below a certain point is lost has resulted in the concept of available energy. Through simple calculations it is shown that energy released at pressure levels thought to be low, amounts to a significant proportion of the total energy value. Furthermore, throw calculations indicate that the assumed loss of that part of energy does not justify practical results. Loss of energy at the low pressure levels may also not be justified from the fragmentation point of view as pressure levels below 1 kbar are enough to extend radial fractures around a borehole. Finally the equation used for the P-V behaviour of the explosive gases is important in throw calculations. Simplified approaches may not reproduce the performance of the explosive which is not characterized only by its energy content.

The advent of large efficient electric motor driven rotary screw compressors have given a great deal of flexibility to the use of these units on many applications not considered before. The results of an extensive literature review and field experiments regarding the effects detonation of high energy explosive have upon various aquatic organisms are reported. These results were used to modify regulatory permitting criteria in Texas. Three separate field experiments were conducted. In the first study, surface placed charges were used in a marine habitat. In the other two, the charges were placed in drilled holes. In one, which was in a freshwater environment, the drilled holes were filled with drilling mud after placement of the charges. In the second, which was in an estuarine environment the holes were allowed to sit for thirty days prior to detonation to permit natural back-filling to occur by water transported sediments. A variety of aquatic organisms held in wire cages were exposed to detonations. Immediate and long-term effects of the exposure were determined based on external and internal visual observations. Damage to aquatic organisms was found to be reduced by placing the explosives in drilled holes and back-filling the holes prior to detonation of the explosives.

This paper and slide presentation is a brief rundown on what is probably the worst natural devastation I have ever witnessed. The epicenter of the quake that so violently shook Mexico City occurred 230 miles away near Mexico's west coast. The first calculation placed the quake at 7.8 on the Richter scale. This was later upgraded to 8.1. Each unit increase on the Richter scale indicates about a 30 fold increase in energy released. The quake was felt in much of Mexico and south Texas and damage occurred in many other Mexican cities. On the morning of September 19, 1985, at 7:18 A.M., the ground went into motion and shook for approximately 2 to 4 minutes. During this period most of the devastation occurred. At 7:38 P.M. the following day, the second quake hit and more buildings fell from this 7.5 quake. The ground in Mexico City moves like jello since it is a dry lake bed 7,350 feet above sea level.\

This paper discusses recent changes to the emulsion blend blasting agent used at the Drummond Pribbenow Mine in Colombia, one of the world’s largest open pit coal mines, and the resulting improvements in rock breakage and excavator productivity. Based on field evaluations, the use of High Density Ammonium Nitrate (HDAN) can be effectively implemented in an emulsion blend blasting agent, yielding excellent results in terms of energy release, shelf life and velocity of detonation (VOD). Field evaluations showed that formulations using HDAN exceed the performance of the actual 50%/50% emulsion/ANFO blend using Porous Prill Ammonium Nitrate (PPAN). PPAN is conventionally used for emulsion blend manufacturing, with physical characteristics to facilitate sensitivity during the detonation process.

Scaling laws commonly used for describing or predicting blast motions generated by conventional arrays of blastholes are dimensionally incorrect. The scaling of distance by the cube root of charge weight is correct only for spherical charges, and scaling by the square root of charge weight is incorrect for any charge configuration, although both approaches may result in empirically useful formulas for a limited range of charge sizes. Analysis of motions generated by a large set of underground blasts shows that scaling distance by the square root of the linear charge density, which is dimensionally correct for a cylindrical borehole, yields much more consistent results than the traditional scaling rules. Further, this scaling law is valid right up to the free face of the burden. A significant result of this work is that the peak particle velocity for an array of blastholes is primarily dependent on blasthole diameter and not on total charge weight or maximum explosive weight per delay, which are the commonly used parameters for scaling seismic amplitudes generated by conventional blasting arrays.

PowerAN is a tradename of Atlas Powder Company for a new line of explosive products comprising blends of emulsion and ANFO in a variety of bulk and packaged grades. The bulk PowerAN grades are either augered or pumped depending upon emulsion content. Augered PowerAN blends contain up to 60% emulsion. Pumped PowerAN grades have an emulsion content of 75% or higher. The blending of PowerAN is usually accomplished at the borehole to satisfy specific borehole conditions. Packaged PowerAN grades are produced in several types of mix plants in diameters of 4" and greater. PowerAN 300 (30% emulsion) and PowerAN 500 (50% emulsion) are the two most popular grades and their chief application is as an economical, high energy replacement for ANFO HD in wet holes. PowerAN combines the cost effectiveness of ANFO with the high performance of emulsions, permitting the blasting engineer to strike an optimum balance between drill pattern expansion and increased productivity according to need.

The cessation of testing of any nuclear explosive devices in all environments is the goal of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. In order to assure compliance with such a treaty, an international monitoring system has been proposed. This system will include seismic, infrasound, hydroacoustic and radionucleide monitors located throughout the world. The goal of this system is the detection of any nuclear test. In preparation for this treaty, a series of monitoring system tests, focusing primarily on seismic observations, have been undertaken. The most recent of these tests, Group of Scientific Experts Technical Test Three (GSETT-3), provides valuable data for assessing future monitoring systems. During the course of this experiment, seismic events associated with earthquakes, nuclear explosions and mining explosions have been recorded. This presentation will discuss the numbers and types of mining explosions triggering the system, in a particular area. Possible implications for the mining industry will be explored.

Researchers in the field of blasting have been trying to develop ways of predicting fragmentation in the last few decades. The Kuznetsov equation estimates the average fragment size, XJ~, based on explosive energy and powder factors. Cunningham calculates the uniformity of a fragment size distribution using drilling accuracy, blast geometry and a rock factor A associated with a “blastability index”, which can be estimated from the jointing, density and hardness of the blasted rock mass. Knowing the mean size and the uniformity index, a Rosin-Rammler distribution equation can then be derived for calculating the fragment size distribution in a blasted muckpile. Analysis of existing data has revealed serious discrepancies between actual and calculated uniformity indices. The current integrated approach combines the Kuznetsov or similar equation and a comminution concept like the Bond Index equation to enable the estimation of both the 50% and SOoh passing sizes (X& and X& ). By substituting these two passing sizes into the Rosin-Rammler equation, the characteristic size (Xc ) and the uniformity index (n) can be obtained to allow the calculation of various fragment sizes in a given blast. The effectiveness of this new fragmentation prediction approach has been tested using sieved data from small-scale bench blasts, available in the literature. This paper will cover all tested results and a discussion on the discrepancy between measurement and prediction due to possible energy loss during blasting.

Full-face blasting rounds have been used to excavate a 4.6-mdiameter shaft at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's Underground Research Laboratory near Pinawa, Manitoba. Both standard pyrotechnic delay detonators and the newly developed electronic delay detonators (EDD) were used on the project. The full-face blasting technique, employing 89-mm-diameter relief holes and 38-mm diameter blast holes, NG-based explosives, and the regular long period delay detonators, has been standard practice at the site, giving excellent wall control and fragmentation results. The comparison blasts using pyrotechnic detonators and EDDs were carried out to test the operational logistics, timing accuracy and blast results obtained with the latter. The long period pyrotechnic delays ranged from O to 18, with the nominal delay varying between 350 ms and 800 ms. The EDD blasts used the same number of periods, with the respective delay interval between successive periods set precisely at 190 ms and 210 ms for the two blasts. Based on a broad range of critically assessed parameters, the EDD blast results proved to be signficantly superior to those obtained with regular pyrotechnic detonators. The results have been analyzed in detail and the relative merits of the two delay systems have been determined. Alternative designs to derive maximum benefits from EDDs in shaft and tunnel blasts have also been suggested.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) is undertaking one of the nations largest water management projects. The Eastside Reservoir Project is being built to insure a supply of water to Southern California in the event of earthquake damage to the aqueducts supplying the region. An 800,000-acre-ft lake will result from the three dams, closing off the valley between two parallel ridges. The single largest contract of the project, the West Dam, was awarded to the joint venture of Atkinson Construction Co., Washington Construction Co. (Morrison Knudsen Co.), and HB Zachry Co. Over 50 million bank cubic yards of rock must be drilled and shot on this contract alone. AWZ relies on the TechBASE database management system for documenting drilling and blasting. The database format of TechBASE allows all production parameters to be linked to the location of the activity. This allows parameters such as drill penetration or boulder production to be analyzed for geologic trends that can either be exploited or dealt with. Shot locations are stored as 3D polygons in a polygon table. Production and cost data are stored in flat tables. Shot names are unique and link the polygon table to the flat table. This allows typical database queries to be made by date, location, cost or any production parameter. The output from these queries can be presented in table, graph and as map formats. The map output is particularly helpful in quantifying geologic conditions and blast performance. The ability to transform the data into information has been very helpful. The ability to present this information graphically has been invaluable.

Pastefill technology has gained an increasing popularity over the past decade. The main advantages are: environmental performance (mainly in tailings disposal), low operation costs and ease of operation, as well as homogeneous properties. However, its weaker nature compared to other types of fill makes it more vulnerable to blast damage. In the last few years, Louvicourt Mine has experienced some cases of pastefill sloughage during the mining of secondary stopes. In order to reduce pastefill sloughage, some studies have been undertaken to investigate the causes and to find possible solutions by looking at stope design, extraction sequence, ground support and blast design. This paper presents the results of a blast damage study carried out at Louvicourt on the 860m level. The instrumentation included vibration monitors (using 6 sets of triaxial geophones grouted in the pastefill), a borehole camera to observe the damage in the pastefill, and a cavity monitoring system for three-dimensional surveys of the blasted stope. The test stope was mined out by four slot blasts and three mass blasts. Most of the damage was created by the mass blasts. It was found that the accumulation of ground vibration was mainly due to the low seismic velocities in the pastefill and the relatively tight delay between blastholes. In addition, there was a substantial difference between the critical PPV in the confined and unconfined pastefill. In practice, these findings have led to modifications of blast design to minimise the exposure time of pastefill walls to air. Such modifications included changes of blast sequence in secondary stopes and delay layout between heavily loaded blastholes. Over the paste two years, the implementation of new blast sequence has shown encouraging results in terms of reduced pastefill sloughage and dilution.

Description of Project: The four photos show a chimney blasting operation in Vienna’s district of Floridsdorf on May 4 2011. The blasting was done with two types of charges. An internal charge provided a force of blast which resulted in 135 single electrical blasting caps initiated detonations on the basic ensured the straight collapse of the chimney. The preparation work was done by reserve force military engineers. The series of photos were shot by Elisabeth Zechmeister. She works in the Austrian DOD but not as a professional photographer; much more she did all activities in her spare time.

In the construction field and to a lesser degree in mining, flagman are often necessary to move traffic and or pedestrians through work zones. Everyone readily recognizes that they are essential for the safety of the general public and the employees on the job. What is not often considered is the safety of the flagmen themselves. Actually, let’s call these employees “flaggers” recognizing the fact that there are as many women as men doing this job. The first problem we need to overcome is the misperception that flagging is a low skill function that can be done by any untrained employee. The reality is that the flagger works in a very hazardous position with serious responsibility for the safety of his fellow employees and the public at large. And to do this job properly re q u i re s that the flagger receive sufficient training before being sent out to the highway. It is also necessary to convince the flagger of the value and importance of their job in order to motivate them to do a professional job.testing, documentation of both, and accurate re c o rdkeeping are key aspects of HM126F. Of course, training and documentation requirements will vary depending on the type of operation involved, and there may be some differences in the application of requirements depending on your jursdiction. Nonetheless, failure to train and properly document such training can result in heavy fines and/or penalties.

After a long week of work in Colorado Springs this past July, I was looking forward to flying home to start a long anticipated family vacation. As I grabbed my seat on the plane, a man sitting next to me innocently inquired, to the row as a whole and not to me in particular, “I wonder what the weather will be like in Phoenix”? To most people, this is a common (maybe the most common) topic of casual conversation. To a meteorologist that just dealt with six thunderstorm delays at a major golf event over 4 days, well, lets just say the smirk on my face said it all. After giving my flight mate a detailed forecast and a short explanation on why I would know such information, I sensed, correctly, the inevitable follow up question was coming. “Why would you need a meteorologist at a golf tournament?”
