The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME) led a post-detonation debris collection project in conjunction with a large AN railcar detonation conducted by the Department of Homeland SecurityTransportation Security Administration, Department of Defense-Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office, Sandia National Laboratories, and the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Grounds. This important work will aid in underpinning algorithms used in the IMESAFR (Institute of Makers of Explosives Safety Analysis for Risk) Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) tool. The test also provided valuable data about AN detonation characteristics when it is driven to detonation. The test took place at the Utah Dugway Proving Grounds (DPG) on April 27, 2018 and the debris collection was conducted the following two weeks with an average of 20 persons per day and an approximate total of 1,400 manhours. This paper details the collection efforts, challenges, and lessons learned. It also presents some of the initial findings relating to the debris distribution.

A column of stemming material keeps explosion gases at high pressure for longer times in a blasthole. In general, use of appropriate stemming enables the achievement of the desired level of fragmentation and looseness of muckpiles, as well as the reduction of airblast and fly rock. The ejection resistance of a stemming column varies with the type of stemming material employed. In an effort to optimise stemming at Mt Owen Mine in the Hunter Valley, Australia, a trial was conducted to assess the efficiency of two types of stemming materials. Mt Owen mine relies on through seam blasting and stemming quality is important in this challenging blasting environment. Each type of stemming was trialed in different section of a blast. The blast was designed using Orica’s SurveyPlus@, LoadPlus@ and ShotPlus@ software. Measurement was done using high speed filming of the blast and then post blast information was obtained from analysis of the film. Data analysis included determination of the ejection velocities and percentage swell. Digging rates were measured from excavator production rates. Despite the presence of rounded surfaces and finer particle sizes, River Pebble stemming material showed superior ejection resistance. It also appeared to perform as well as more angular and expensive Crushed Stone, a finished quarry product, based on excavator productivity and heave. It was recommended that future blasts at the mine be stemmed with the River Pebble stemming material.

Concern over construction vibration-induced cracking has led to development of a new approach to vibration monitoring called autonomous crack measurement (ACM) and illustrated in Figure 1. This paper describes the concept as well as sensor performance in the first test house fitted an ACM system. Response of three cracks in this concrete masonry unit (CMU) house was measured as part of the system verification. ACM employs a single sensor that measures both weather-induced micrometer changes in crack width and those produced by habitation and ground motioninduced vibration. This comparison is displayed in real time via the Internet without human interaction. Graphic display through the Internet provides a new pathway for communication with the public. Such visual comparison of changes in crack width provides a simple alternative to the present system of comparison of measured and allowable vibration time histories. Measurements reported herein show that weatherinduced response of cracks is greater than that caused by presently allowable construction-induced vibration.

The authors describe in this paper a systematic approach toward reducing coal production costs up to 35% through the use of explosives energy for overburden removal. In this system, explosives are employed to blast as much as 65% of the overburden instantly from highwall to spoil pile, with only the lesser portion requiring removal by dragline, shovel, or loader.

In the exploitation of low grade mineral deposits, blasting engineers are vitally concerned with maximizing the efficiency of explosive fracturing of rock while simultaneously limiting deleterious environmental affects to acceptable levels. Efficiency can be inferred from radiating seismic waves. Likewise, seismic waves carry direct information on damage potential. The usual approach to this problem is to measure the maximum signal level close to a blast, where it is difficult to instrument and where the signal complexity is intensified by mixtures of wave types and by local heterogeneities. Near-field sites are usually more easily monitored and more readily interpreted. Therefore, a study is being conducted to determine if variations in multi-hole, delayed blasts produce measurable changes in the spectra of seismic waves recorded in the near-field and if these spectra can be correlated with close-in strong motions and affects. To date, power spectra for the well-developed phase Lg and its early coda have been computed and are found to vary measurably when nominal changes occur in blast conditions. Up to a distance of about 50 km the spectra of Lg and its coda appear to be dominated by body wave characteristics (thus source-controlled), whereas beyond 50 km path affects seem to dominate. Additional data must be collected to fully explore the consistency of near-field Lg observations and to verify their usefulness as diagnostics of the engineering affects of blasting.

This study is based on a six month study performed for Lee County, Florida. The study was based on blasting for land development and how this type of blasting affects structures. The study is investigates peak particle velocities and the relationship to other environmental and manmade forces that affect structures. The study also explores the effect of geology on blast vibration. After completion in Lee County, the study was then continued in the quarry environment in Vermont and extremely tight blasting environment of New York City. Charge diameters were 127mm (5 inches) or less.

An experimental investigation on the trend of cratering induced by explosives placed on rock masses was carried out. By using various types of explosives and rocks having different geomechanical parameters, it was possible to evaluate the influence of the explosive-rock coupling. Furthermore, the importance of the parameters defining the rock and the explosive for the absorption of energy induced in the rock mass, is pointed out.

It is widely recognised that complaints from members of the public relating to blasting operations are related to both ground vibration and air overpressure. It is also known that a complaint is more likely to be generated if the person is inside of a structure at the time of the blast. Reports relating to such complaints often refer to ‘noise’ inside the structure with terms like ‘rattling’ commonly being employed. Such acoustic response is widely perceived within the blasting industry to be directly related to high levels of air overpressure although there appears to have been very little research carried out specifically related to this effect.

Numerous small- and intermediate-size cratering experiments have been conducted in Piceance Creek Basin oil shale at the Colony and Anvil Points oil shale mines near Rifle, Colorado. The purpose of these experiments was to evaluate scaling as a tool to infer the behavior of large-scale tests from small-scale experiments, to calibrate the hydrodynamic computer codes used to model explosive fragmentation of oil shale, and to investigate the influence of bedding plane orientation, natural joints, fractures, and the grade of oil shale on rock fragmentation.

Determining the transitions from run-up to optimal cut length and optimal cut length to run down, without bias, from the penetration of a linear shaped charge (LSC) is difficult. The stresses applied to the targets during explosive testing can distort the targets in such a manner that determining the true distance of cut, penetration, or fracture can be demanding. Through the course of this research, it was observed that the researchers made many of the errors involved in the collection of data. Among these errors researchers found problems in: determining and fitting the sample to a single plane from which to read measurements, determining where along the path of cut the three phases of penetration transition, and the precision of measurement based on handheld tools and the human eye. This study looks at three methods of recording the data of a series of linear shaped charge tests. The tests resulted in samples which are not ideal for measuring with common laboratory devices like measuring tapes, calipers, or rulers. The first method utilized these common laboratory devices and the difficulties the authors experienced are described in this paper. The second and third methods involve digital photography, image manipulation, and the use of AutoCAD. Methods two and three are then compared to the simple observational method and discussion is made in regards to the precision and accuracy of each method.

Blasting techniques and protective measures exist that can mitigate risks associated with flyrock and the nuisance of vibration, and overpressure. However, these are often misused or not used because there are no prescriptive regulatory requirements and typically urban blasting guidelines do not exist. The relationship between the increasingly negative publicity that the urban blasting industry receives and the existing state of regulatory control on blasting in urban environments is presented.

To create conditions for economic rates of mineral recovery in a deep, hard rock mass, enhancement of naturally occurring permeability is necessary, and may be achieved through explosives detonated in boreholes. Previous theories of explosively created permeability are reviewed and found to relate permeability solely to the degree of fracturing, neglecting porosity. A theory is presented that includes both fracture density and porosity, and its results are applied, together with a knowledge of explosive behavior, to derive design parameters for in-situ mining.

Located in the Chestnut Ridge Mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania, the Casparis mine named for the founder Kenneth Casparis operated from 1916 until the early 1950. producing crushed stone for construction and railroad ballast. The rock was transported by aerial buckets to a railroad tipple nearly 1000’ (304.80 meters) below the mine. The mine property is now owned by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and is located in the Loyalhanna limestone seam with 4 primary entries that are approximately 40’ (12.19 meters) high by 30’ (9.14 meters) wide and extend over 2 miles (3.22 kilometers) into the mountain.

The extensive building complex requires heavy concrete foundations which have to be poured during the early stages of construction and on a nearly daily situation so that contractual agreements can be met on a timely basis.
