"The Merensky Reef is a platinum group minerals (PGM) bearing reef in the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The reef has been treated by bulk PGM and sulphide flotation with the aim of maximisingthe valuable minerals recovery and gangue minerals rejection.Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained were compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis.The results obtained on 1:1 pentlandite-pyroxene mixtures showed that the quality of process water plays an important role in flotation. The flotation recoveries of pentlandite and pyroxene were lower in synthetic process water compared to those obtained in a simple electrolyte solution."

"In order to achieve a high recovery of particles finer than 10µm, three types of dry Tower Mill (VD-1, KD-1, KD-2 and KD-3) have been developed. These mills differ from each other in the size of the comminuting part, the inside diameter and shape of the classifying part and the system involved in the collecting process. The last version (KD-3) of tower mills in which the comminuting and classifying operations has been separated, can produce particles finer than 10µm from a limestone ore sizing from 420 to 3360µm. In this tower mill, products in comminuting section are blown up and transported into the classifying column, made of an inverted cone on top of a cylinder, before they agglomerate and settle down. Fine particles are deported and recovered in a cyclone with a central spiral ribbon.Previous studies on the grinding efficiency of the tower mill KD-3 have shown how the maximum size of collected products increased with the airflow velocity, disturbing in the same way a smooth regulation of the grinding operation with the tower mill KD-3. A complete knowledge of factors that influence the maximum size of collected products is needed, therefore, to increase the efficiency of the grindingclassifying operation and ensure a better control over the collected products. The present study deals with this issue and, assuming that the structure of the classifying column could be one of these factors, its internal structure was modified (insertion of vertical plates, cone or horizontal nets) before carrying out comminution tests that would establish a relationship between the inward shape of the column and the maximum size of collected products. It was found that the weight of products collected in the cyclone decreases when a cone or some horizontal nets are inserted inside the column. At the same time, the weight of products collected in the column increases. This is due to the fact that coarse particles blown up from the comminution section collide with the base of the cone or the nets and settle down the bottom of the classifying column. Therefore, the cone and some horizontal nets inserted inside a classifying column, have the particularity to stabilize the maximum size of particles (15.1-17.5µm and 8.4-11.3µm) in the cyclone even when the airflow velocity in duct increased. These tools could of great help in the production of particles of definite size to fit for instance the paper industries requirements (production of limestone material sizing - 10µm as paper filler)."

Concentrators processing PGM bearing ores make use of polysaccharide depressants to reduce the recovery of the undesired naturally floatable gangue minerals, mainly silicates, present in the ore. Recent work has shown that high depressant dosages can completely depress naturally floatable gangue and thus prevent it from reporting to the concentrate. These high depressant dosages can, however, have a negative effect on the recovery of valuable minerals present in the ore by reducing the stability of the froth. In order to counterbalance the effects of depressant addition, frothers are added. It is, however, preferable to maintain independent control over bubble size and froth stability which is difficult to achieve with only one frother. An alternative strategy is, to use a blend of frothers, e.g. a weaker frother in combination with a stronger frother. Such a system allows an additional degree of freedom: changing the ratio of the two frothers, that would provide more independent control of bubble size and froth stability. This study demonstrates, through the use of batch flotation tests, how blending low molecular weight alcohols with commercially available frothers impact the solids and water recovery, as well as the valuable mineral recovery and concentrate grade in different PGM ores. Higher water and solids recoveries together with higher valuable mineral recoveries (>90% copper and >70% nickel) were obtained from tests using frother blends.

Several approaches to the estimation of the size discrete breakage rate and distribution parameters (kj and bi,j ) of the batch grinding kinetic model are available in the literature. Analysis of a large amount of data available in the literature and our own data on several pure minerals and complex ores has shown that it is not always possible to obtain correct estimates of the two sets of parameters using known approaches as several widely different combinations of k and b parameters can sometimes simulate the batch grinding data reasonably accurately. It has been found that there are two main reasons: (i) all size classes are not well represented in the data and (ii) functional forms used for estimation of the two sets of parameters are sometimes chosen somewhat arbitrarily (especially in the case of complex ores), though they are actually uniquely related through size continuous breakage rate and distribution functions. A suitable experimental methodology has been described and demonstrated using some synthetic data and actual experimental data. A mill function approach, which does not require making any assumptions about the functional forms for k and b parameters, is also described and demonstrated. This approach is promising, but requires further development.

Principles of ecologically friendly geo-technologies construction are formulated on the basis of the works of the leading scientists in the field of rational processing of mineral resources of the Russian Academy of Sciences. One of these concepts is a new direction in rotational disintegration of mineral and technogenic raw material with the purpose of effective subsequent enrichment. A large amount of practical experience has been accumulated in the industry on selective destruction by application of vibrational method on initial material with consideration of its physical-mechanical properties and mineral structure. This method is successfully realised in a conic inertial pulverisation devices constructed by Mekhanobr Institute (St.-Petersburg). A new construction of conical-inertial pulverisation with a modification of disintegration force has been developed recently at Mekhanobr Institute. It allows, in some cases, to increase selectivity of subdivision and to avoid over-disintegration. Advantages of “wet” subdivision methods in conic inertial disintegration devices are proved. The efficiency of such subdivision can be increased due to rational use of the phenomenon of a dislocation-dynamic diffusion. Its advantage is proved by the effect on disintegrated material by frequency-modulated variable electrical fields of low power. It was shown in industrial conditions, that the productivity of the spherical mill can be increased by 10 %, and that it also prevents ecologically harmful surface active substances (SAS) in milling zone and it reduces the dust content in the air. The techniques of tentative estimation of efficiency of various proceedings technogenic materials and their classification are created. The scientific fundaments of rational, ecologically friendly technology of processing and regeneration of various kinds of technogenic raw material are developed. A number of effective technologies on processing of wastes is developed and inculcated in concentration factories and metallurgical factories.

The particles commonly encountered in mineral benefication schemes have irregularites that are expressed at many different length scales. In part, this originates from preceding processes (e.g. makedown, comminution, handling and storage), which are known to chemically and physically modify the bulk particle and its surface. Interparticle tribology, dissolution and reprecipitation events along with large-scale mechanical stresses are just a handful of the interactions encountered during processing of particles prior to separation. It is feasible to imagine that each one of these events may impose a fingerprint of characteristic nanoscale, microscale, and macroscale morphological changes that can modify the overall interaction of these particles within a system. Suprisingly there are just a few works on how these resulting features can alter the performance of benefication schemes, and especially flotation.

"It is difficult separating fluorite from Ca, Ba, Si intergrowth minerals than simple from Si, using common reagents such as combination of oleic acid or paraffin soap and water glass, but the finest quality fluorite concentrate whose grade is over 96%F must be required in chemical plant.This paper studies the flotation process of native fluorite from calcite, barite and silicate minerals whose flotation properties is similar to fluorite, using new effective collector H602 and new depressor S602 that is cheaper in cost, and describes the flotation properties. In order to determine optimum flotation separation condition, the effect of pulp pH, pulp temperature, pulp density and the effect of dosage of reagents on flotation were investigated and the flotation result was provided by oleic acid collector and the results of collector H602 were compared with those of collector oleic acid in the test. The test result of ore samples shows that at moderate pulp pH values (10.5-11.5) and other moderate technical conditions, the fluorite mineral can be obtained by new reagents and the rational reagents combination. The conclusion is 98%F of fluorite concentrate can be obtained, using the combination of H602 and S602 and only 5 steps in techniques. The paper discusses the mechanism of the flotation separation of fluorite mineral from intergrowth minerals."

Sustainable development requires the optimal use of natural resources and recycling of the wastes. In fact recycling is the final productive use of obsoletes. ELVs, obsolete appliances and industrial wastes have become important resources for production of iron and steels, non-ferrous metals, and composites. Within shredding plants, these obsoletes are firstly shredded to the pieces and then processed to recycle different materials, especially ferrous and non-ferrous metals for metallurgy. Traditional and new developed mineral processing technologies are nowadays used for recycling different materials from waste effluents. Shredding and separating plants are currently recycle the wastes by make use of different technologies to mainly produce raw material for metallurgical application. However, other non-ferrous components are also treated for energy conservation and protecting environment. Currently, recovery in shredding and recycling plants maximises to 75% and about 25% of the feed is land-filled. However, recycling rate must be increased in due to the economical, environ-mental and social concerns. A comprehensive study for recycling, with especial focus on ferrous metal recovery, was sup-ported by Swedish Environmental Agency (MISTRA) to look at possibilities to increase the recycling rate and to reduce the amount of disposal. Part of this study was dedicated to study the shred-ding plant facilities and to look for possibilities to improve the quality and quantity of the shredding product streams. The aims were to improve the quality of ferrous scrap (apparent density > 0.9 and Cu<0.25%) for iron and steel production as well as having better quality for non-ferrous metals through the recycling schema, and finally to treat the shredder residue (SR) to recover metals and plastics to reduce the disposals. This paper summarises the results of sampling and conducting separation tests for improving the recovery of the ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The results indicated to be possible to obtain high quality ferrous scrap at recovery of 88%. However, the total recovery for metal scrap has reached 93%. Furthermore, test results on fine, P< 8mm, shredding residue (SR) showed promising prospect in recovery of metals and protecting environment by physical separation, i.e. electrical separation technique.

A mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms was enriched from Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) samples collected from several chalcopyrite mines in China,which can leach copper from chalcopyrite effectively. Its tolerance to chalcopyrite was brought up to 80 g/L after being adapted to gradually increased concentrations of chalcopyrite. The effects of several leaching variables on copper recovery in Stirred Tank Reactor had been investigated. The ore contained chalcopyrite (62.2%) and galena (25.6%) as the main sulfide minerals. The results of the tests show that it is possible, operating at 8% of pulp density to attain copper extraction of 75% in 44 days. The leaching rate of chalcopyrite tends to increase with the dissolution of total iron. Microscopic counts of microorganisms in the solution tend to be higher at low pH range. Furthermore, the analyses of leached residues indicate that the passivation of this chalcopyrite is mainly due to the formation of a mass of jarosite and anglesite (about 48.3% and 21.7% in residue respectively), other than elemental sulphur layer. The bacterial community composition was analyzed by using amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA). Two moderately thermophilic bacteria species were identified as Leptospi-rillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus caldus, with different proportion in the bio-pulp, 67% and 33%, respectively.

"Pyrrhotite in nickel-copper sulphide ores is nickeliferrous and intimately associated with pentlandite. Due to its low nickel content, pyrrhotite rejection is an important step in processing of these ores. In our laboratory, various reagents were investigated for their effect on pyrrhotite depression. Among these, a combined use of triethylenetetramine and sodium metabisulphite was found highly promising.The work described in this paper has two parts. The firs part is a summary of results obtained on process samples from the pyrrhotite rejection circuit at Falconbridge’s Strathcona Mill. The second part involves simulation of the circuit performance based on the reagent conditions used in the experimental work and the concept of split factors.Two sets of reagent conditions were evaluated. The first one involved baseline conditions, simulating the current reagent performance. The second one simulated the impact these new reagents can have on the circuit performance.The simulation results obtained under baseline conditions indicated a good agreement with the current circuit performance. The simulation results suggest that at practically the same pentlandite recovery and tailing grades, the circuit concentrate nickel grade can be doubled through effective pyrrhotite rejection by these new reagents."

In 2004, LKAB decided to start a basic engineering study in expanding its existing production lines at the Malmberget mine site. It was expected that some of the production lines would become bottlenecks with reference to capacity. In this study, the sorting plant is examined and the results show that several unit operations will be limiting under current operating conditions. An additional purpose with the study was to investigate how replacement of some machines would influence performance and if production plans for the coming years might be achieved. Steady-state simulations using the software Modsim? were extensively used to study process performance for different operating conditions, such as iron content and size distribution in run-of-mine ore. Model parameters were derived from pilot plant data and when possible from ex-isting circuits. A complication for the simulations was the lack of relevant data and therefore some of the initial results were only indicative. The result shows that installation of new screens would give a much better operation, but also new crushers would be an improvement. This, since they can be run with full crusher chamber and tighter CSS. During 2007, most of the proposed remedies were implemented and the result is that the bottle-necks are gone, and the grades and material balances are even better than what was envisioned from the simulations.

"Spodumene, feldspar and quartz possess similar surface properties, which make the difficult to separate spodumene from other silicate minerals by flotation. The differences of crystal structure, surface property and floatability of three minerals were studied by various technical means. The results show that Li-O and Al-O bonds in spodumene structure are not strong and easy to be broken. However, Al-O and Si-O bonds in feldspar and Si-O bond in quartz are very strong and not easy to be broken. High contents of Al and Li on spodumene surface were found by XPS measurements, which is benefit for the adsorption of anionic collector. The surface energies of main cleavage planes of spodumene (110), feldspar (001) and quartz (001) are 1.88 J/m2, 2.97J/m2 and 2.68J/m2, respectively. Hence, the exposed surfaces of feldspar and quartz are not saturated and easy to adsorb OH- ions from solution and cause the lower IEP than spodumene. The contact angles of three minerals in water are lower than 16º, suggesting that the hydrophilicity of three minerals is high, and the order of hydrophilicity is quartz > feldspar >spodumene. Correspondingly, contact angles and flotation recoveries of spodumene are bigger than that of feldspar and quartz in presence of a combined anionic and cationic collector named YOA.INTRODUCTION Flotation technology plays most important role for the recovery of spodumene from pegmatite ore. Generally, spodumene with fresh surface is easy to be floated using soap and oleic acid as collector, and the best flotation pH range is 4.0 to 9.0. However, the flotability of spodumene will become worse when its surface was polluted by slime which produced by the weathering of spodumene and other silicates (Dresler et al. 1998; Moon and Fuerstenau 2003; Menéndez et al. 2004; Yu et al. 2015). In addition, the species of Ca2+, Fe3+, Mg2+ and other metal ions in pulp can not only activate the flotation of spodumene, but also the activation of gangue minerals, and then the flotation selectivity of spodumene from gangue minerals became wores (Wang and Yu 2007; Yu et al. 2014). In order to eliminate the negative effects of slime and metal ions on the flotation of spoddumene, the desliming and long time scrubbing with the addition of NaOH and Na2CO3 were adopted. Usually, NaOH shows the activation for spodumene flotation, and the recovery of spodumene increases with the increase of NaOH dosage. Na2CO3 can eliminate the non selective activation of Ca2+, Fe3+, Mg2+ ions in the pulp, and the concentrate grade of spodumene increases with the increase of Na2CO3 dosage. Anionic collectors such as chelants, hydroxamic acid, oxidized paraffin soap, naphthenic acid and oleic acid were widely used for the flotation of spodumene (Dresler et al. 1998; Moon and Fuerstenau 2003; Menéndez et al. 2004; Yu et al. 2015)."

As opposed to large household appliances, in the processing of which dissambling has an important role, this possibility is pushed into the background as the size decreases. The practicable solution is physical liberation of the used small electronic household devices (by comminution) and separation of the liberated components according to their physical properties. In the first phase of the experimental work the structural/material composition of the typical products (mixer, kitchen robot, hair dryer, coffee machine, iron, bread toaster, vacuum cleaner, oil fryer) was determined. In the second phase a physical liberability test for each appliance using a rotary shear/shredder for crushing and a hammer shredder for milling was carried out. In the third phase the experimental separability tests using an air classifier and a shaking air table, as well as an eddy-current and an electrostatic separator were performed. In the present paper the results obtained using the air classifier and the electrostatic separator, are reported. To follow the life of a grain a new methodological procedure was elaborated. The particle size fractions after comminution were sorted into material fractions (copper, aluminium, plastics, etc.), then separated, and finally the recovery of the material components in the products were determined. Furthermore, the joint separability was investigated from two points of view: 1) for grain fractions and 2) for each waste appliance. Commercially available flotation technologies for recovery of mineral fines have remained essentially unchanged for several decades. Recent studies have focused simply on improving mechanical and open column cells. Such studies have explored different control strategies and have aimed to improve reagent selectivity, fine air bubble generation and particle-air contact. However, no study has questioned whether current techniques are the most efficient technology for recovering mineral fines. Given that both mechanical and open column cells have a widely accepted carrying capacity limitation, the lack of extensive research into an alternative technology is surprising. Most recently, open column flotation has become an entrenched technology, and it is undermining the efficient recovery of mineral fines worldwide. An alternative exists. Packed column flotation overcomes the above-stated problems as the technology surpasses the carrying capacity limitation of current means by several-fold and almost always achieves the best performance in many comparative pilot tests and full-scale plant operations. Filling a column with packing plates creates a network of sloped walls capable of supporting a froth bed many times deeper than conventional machines. Having froth up to 75 percent of the total column volume tolerates all feed changes encountered in the plant environment and permits maximum flexibility in concentrate quality control. Furthermore, its scale-up is straightforward by increasing column volume or the number of interconnected small cells. As the air breaks upon rising and is distributed horizontally through packing plates, the air spargers can be replaced with a simple blower, resulting in considerable savings in operation and maintenance costs. Packed flotation technology provides a break-through solution for the separation of fine and ultra-fine minerals. Its simplicity, superior performance, and low cost structure make it an appealing alternative to current technologies and allow greater flexibility in downstream processing. Future industrial applications include a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic ores. This paper focuses on some recent scale-up campaigns for nickel and copper sulphide flotation applications compared directly to conventional equipment.

The ?yield plastic? rheological model describes the flow behaviour of a variety of non-settling suspensions, including many types of mineral slurry. The current paper presents the laminar flow relationship (pressure gradient vs. flow rate) for a yield plastic fluid flowing through a pipe or cylinder. Simplified algebraic equations, suitable for engineering purposes, are presented for yield plastic fluids with values of the scaling factor in the range that includes most industrially important slurries. The laminar pipe flow relationship is one of the most important fluids engineering calculations. It may be used to determine the rheological parameters of a material in a capillary rheometer or flow loop. If the rheology is known, these relationships may be used to determine the laminar flow pressure gradient in pipelines of various sizes.

Phosphate minerals are conventionally concentrated by flotation process using soap or soap- light diesel oil emulsion as collector. Some plants use detergents such as sodium petroleum sulfonate or alfa olefin sulfonate to enhance efficiency of soap flotation. It is reported that urea a known hydrotrope enhances flotation efficiency of soap as efficiently as alfa olefin sulfonate or linear alkyl benzene sulfonate at bench scale tests. In the present study tri sodium citrate also a known hydrotrope is tested as promoter in the flotation of phosphate mineral from Eshidiya ore.

The large-scale 8.53m×3.96m (28?×13? F/F) SAG mills was first applied in Donggua Hill Copper Mine which processes 13,000 tons ore per day. The crushing and grinding circuit went into operation in the Donggua Hill plant in October 2004. However, at the beginning, the productivity of grinding only reached 58% of the capacity expected and some indexes of the crushing and milling circuit didn?t meet the requirements. Especially, the total load of the 8.53m×3.96m (28?×13? F/F) SAG mills was up to 34%~41% (25%~30% designed)and some hard rocks with the size of 25~70mm, which can?t be treated as a medium or even would be crushed and make larger ores or steal balls necessary, were seriously accumulated in the SAG mills. Consequently, they occupied the effective mill volume which in turn reduced the efficiency of the SAG mills and increase the energy consumption. In order to solve the problem of accumulation in the SAG mill and increase its productivity, some measures were taken, such as passing more hard pebble through the grate at mill dis-charging end, changing the type of steal balls and so on. And the results showed that these measures functioned well and had good effects, which is that the filling percentage of the SAG mills has been reduced to 26%~29% from 34%~41% with the composition of particle sizes improved a lot and the productivity increased by 77.4% reaching up to 13,380 tons per day.

With the very effective depressant and collector developed by China Bluestar Lehigh Engineering Corp (hereinafter referred to as LEHIGH), satisfied results are obtained from laboratorial beneficiation tests on phosphate samples from Karatau, Republic of Kazakhstan by the direct flotation process. In this paper the effect of single factors on performance of flotation is studied and their applicable ranges are proposed. The final test results are described as follows: As the feed contains 23.20 % P2O5, and 3.96% MgO, a phosphate concentrate assaying 29.77%P2O5 and 1.54% MgO is produced, and the P2O5 recovery in concentrate is 88.28%. The beneficiation tests make it possible to simplify existing technology with fine grinding-desliming, followed by reverse & direct flotation system and consequently improve the concentrate grade and recovery for the future beneficiation plant

Reutilization of waste printed circuit boards (PCB) can not only prevent potential environmental pollution, but also achieve recycling of secondary resources. Study on recycling of discarded PCB belongs to the front edge of environmental pollution prevention and resource recycling. In order to effectively crushing waste PCB, and solve the problem of secondary pollution of fugitive odor and dust during the crushing process, a wet impacting crusher was adopted to achieve comminution liberation of PCB in water medium. 96.79% of the crushed yield was distributed in ?2mm, and metal took 97.18% in this grade of production. Size distribution of PCB particles was characterized double peaks at the sizes of ?1+0.5mm and ?0.074mm. A double Rosin-Rammler function, is called DRR function, is put forward to describe the size distribution of PCB particles. The DRR function of cumulative weight percentage oversize of PCB was non-liner fitted by self-defining DRR function of the Origin 7.0. The evaluation indexes of the fitting results are the correlation coefficients R2 of 0.9994 and residual E of 0.18671, those show that DRR function is perfectly accurate. Based on the research the mechanical separation and material properties of PCB, a wet process of reclaiming metals from PCB using a new style separator ? tapered diameter separation bed (TDSB) in water medium was designed, and the related separation mechanism was studied. The fluid field of the tapered diameter separation equipment was simulated by the Ansys Flotran software, the variation laws of the velocity in each position in the fluid field as well as the equation of axial distribution sectional max velocity were analysed according to the simulation result, the stress change and motion trajectory of the pellet in the certain fluid field were analysed. The results show that the expanding tubular structure of the varied diameter separation bed indicates gradually decreasing velocity of water flow along the axis, assuming a certain angle in the bed, as a result of the gravity?s influence, and there was corresponding change to the distribution of the flow velocity, thus the whole formed a special fluid field where velocity variations exist in different positions. When the material passed through the fluid field along with the water flow, as a result of the difference to the particle density, the granularity and the shape, there would appear the difference to the motion trajectory as well as the movement distance under the action of the fluid: The lower density materials discharge along with water flow, but the higher density materials would be kept in bottom of the bed and discharge through material mouth. Therefore, light and heavy products were separated effectively according to the density. Using tapered diameter separation bed to process the ?1mm size crushed material of waste printed circuit boards, with the discharge of water 5.5m3/h, feed-rate of the material 250g/min and with an obliquity 35°, product with 93.92% in integration efficiency and 93.73% in recovery ratio of the metal were obtained by the primary separation. Compared with other mechanical methods, the range of particle size was broaden using the TDSB to recovery metals from PCB, and lower limit size of separation almost approach to 0. "The aim of this work was the study of the effect of the type (Fe3+, Al3+ and Fe3+ and Al3+ mixture) and of the coprecipitant concentration on As5+ removal by ACF. Removal of As5+ using Sodium Dodecylsulfate (SDS) as a collector was studied by Adsorbing Colloid Flotation (ACF) at laboratory scale. The morphology of the precipitate retained in the foam was analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM/EDS).By comparing the coprecipitant type and concentration studies it could be concluded that As5+ removal in the presence of Fe3+ (160 mg.L-1) alone, or a Fe3+ (80 mg.L-1) and Al3+ (40 mg.L-1) mixture, is equivalently effective (99,9%) and greater than in the presence of Al3+ (80 mg.L-1) alone (97,7%).Through SEM/EDS analyses, it was possible to observe that both morphology and composition of the precipitate produced in the solution and retained in the foam depend on the physico-chemical conditions of the system, that is, on the species present in the solution."
