"OVERVIEWExpert Online is a software system that aims to mimic an informed expert on a minerals processing plant. The primary objective of Expert Online is to provide operators with effective training and on-the-job assistance. Training will mostly be done off-line (e.g. using simulators of the plant), while on-the-job assistance will help the operator during normal operation to run the plant in an effective manner. Although Expert Online focuses on the operator, it is expected to also be of value to other plant personnel, including supervisors and plant managers.Expert Online will make use of novel artificial intelligence technology (developed by MINTEK) known as the Interpreting Expert System (IES). Previously the IES was only able to explain the actions taken by the controller. Expert Online will extend this functionality to also take the process dynamics into account.Expert Online is being developed by a South African consortium comprising MINTEK (focusing on the research and development of the system as a whole), Lonmin (globally one of the biggest platinum producers, with plants suitable to test Expert Online on) and the University of Natal (academic partner, providing consultation and focusing on complex process modelling). The initial application of Expert Online will be on milling- and flotation plants.This paper discusses the structural design of Expert Online for implementation on the latest version of MINTEK’s open control platform, PlantStar, as well as several advances and additions since the previous implementations of the Interpreting Expert System."

"This paper presents some important aspects regarding the ion exchange treatment of an Ni and Co sulphate acidic liquor using chelating resins. Chelating resins possessing iminodiacetic or bis-picolylamine functional groups were compared in terms of nickel and cobalt recovery. The experimental resin with bispicolylamine functionalities (Dowex M4195) was evaluated with respect to Ni and Co uptake, and compared with Rohm &Haas commercial chelating iminodiacetate acid resin.The use of selective ion exchange to recover metals from sulphuric acid liquors has been studied for a long time. Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) has been actively involved in hydrometallurgical applications of IX and has researched in selecting the optimum resin for nickel and cobalt selective removal and the design of a suitable IX circuit. When an IX operation is contemplated for a specific application, it is followed a screening process which generally involves consideration of the solution composition and pH, speciation of the metals in the liquor to be treated and other possible techniques that can be applied to achieve the desired specifications or recoveries. Once a decision has been made to use IX for a specific application, relevant testwork should be done to select the most cost-effective resin and design the IX circuit to achieve the desired criteria. The experimental part dealt with the working conditions, resin characteristics and the influence upon the resin maximum exchange capacity of the following factors: nickel concentration, temperature, pH and resin-to-solution ratio. Based on the experimental data obtained, it has been proposed a innovative technological treatment"

"The analysis of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) combines remote sensing techniques with laser spectroscopy. Over variable distances different rock types are identified or changes in the quality of one rock type are recognised. LIF Analysers operate non-destructive, non-contact, on-line and in real-time. Installed over conveyors or over driveways the analysers ""look"" at the moving bulk solids 20 times per second and provide in real-time information for downstream sorting, blending or optimisation of processing. LIF Analysers recognise rock types (hardness information or dilution control), degrees of alteration, degrees of oxidation and –semi-quantitative- content of certain minerals in an ore. Only under favourable conditions quantitative assay information can be obtained, as e.g. the phosphorus content of Kiruna type iron ore.The main application of LIF Analysers is seen in big open pit operations, where the muck is trucked to an in-pit crusher and the crushed rock conveyed out of the pit to its respective destination: e.g. the primary high grade ore to the mill, the low grade or oxidised ore to the leach pads and the internal waste to the dumps.In underground mining and especially in block caving operations dilution control is of utmost importance. Here a LIF Analyser mounted on the back of a pick-up truck can be moved from drawpoint to drawpoint and quickly assess the degree of dilution.Closer to the mill the stockpile management based on LIF analysis will lead to stockpiles sorted according to rock type (hardness), degrees of alteration and oxidation. In case of direct feeding rom ore to the mill the knowledge of the type and quality of all the material between the in-pit crusher and the mill facilitates optimisation of e.g. reagent dosage."

"In mid-2001, North American Palladium commissioned a new 15,000 tonnes per day milling and flotation circuit at their Lac des Iles Mine (LDI), one of only two primary platinum group element (PGE) producers in North America. The mill treats an ore containing 2.3 g/t PGE producing a concentrate assaying 300 g/t PGE, at a recovery of roughly 75%.Top-size control crushing is conducted ahead of semi-autogenous milling. A portion of the SABC circuit feed is crushed to –25mm to increase mill throughput. Product from the SABC circuit is fed to flotation. Flotation consists of roughing and scavenging, with the rougher and scavenger concentrates each being reground using vertimills. Cleaner flotation uses two stages of cleaning using mechanical cells, and a third stage using flotation columns, the column tails being scavenged using a bank of mechanical cells. Rougher concentrate by-passes the first cleaner circuit. Reagents added include amyl xanthate collector, dithiophosphate promoter, MIBC frother and a carboxy methyl cellulose-based gangue depressant.SGS Lakefield Research, together with staff at LDI initiated a structured plant optimisation program comprising on-site testing, bench-scale flotation and mineralogical analysis using QemSCAN. The objectives of the mineralogical studies were 1) to identify feed PGM, their size distribution and mineral associations, 2) establish relationships between the PGM mineralogy and PGM floatability, and 3) characterize the culprit silicate minerals diluting the final concentrate.PGM flotation response at Lac des Iles is clearly bi-modal in nature, with about 60% of the PGM floating quickly, to a high value rougher concentrate. The mineralogical work was able to explain the causes of the bi-modal PGM floatability, which in turn created new opportunities for the metallurgists to optimise the circuit."

"This paper compares thermodynamic modelling results with those obtained for copper sulphide removal from aqueous solution in both continuous and batch experiments at laboratory scale. Sulphide precipitation has been demonstrated to be an effective method for heavy metal removal. The advantages are the high degree of metal removal at low pH, low quantities of sludge formation, the ease of de-watering and low reactor retention time due to high reactivity of sulphides. However, the low solubility of sulphide species can lead to spontaneous nucleation of fines, which are difficult to remove.Theoretical modelling was carried out using ASPEN Plus™ and OLI systems Inc ESP process. Both simulators were used to calculate copper sulphide recovery and residual aqueous copper concentrations as a function of pH. The predictions were then compared with experimental results. Both simulations predicted that all of the inlet copper would precipitate as sulphide CuS(s) over the entire range of pH and sulphide: copper molar ratios investigated. The simulation results were strongly influenced by the number of chemical species and the nature of the thermodynamic data taken into account in the model.The continuous experimental studies were carried out in a fluidised bed reactor (FBR). Copper sulphate was reacted with sodium sulphide and the solid precipitated directly onto the pellets in the FBR. The use of sulphide was motivated by high sulphate levels in local acid mine drainage and the ultimate integration of the metal removal process with a biological sulphate reducing process that produces an aqueous sulphide stream.A maximum dissolved copper removal of 99.6% (AAS analysis) and a total removal efficiency of 95.8% (dissolved copper minus fines) were achieved. Stoichiometry of the precipitate was determined from SEM/EDAX analysis (atomic percentages) and was close to 1/1, irrespective of the operating conditions."

Adjusting nature, type of galvanic pairs and forming three component system possible to enlarge emf circuits to 2.378 V.The role of ?2, as basic agent, for generation of hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl ions.It was stated, that removing of metal ions from solutions occur mainly on account of sorption and hydrolytic sedimentation of iron oxihydrates.Determined separate stages of the process: coagulation, sorptions of admixtures on freshly formed ferric oxides and oxidizing destruction of organic components of effluents in presence of ?2 ? ?2?2. Shown efficiency of the method for removing of Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, As ions, as well as fluoride, phosphate and cyanide anions and oil products, surface-active and flotation reagents. Cleaned water can be recycled for some processes non-critical toward residual concentration of admixtures, as total salt contents is lowered on 60-75 % and reaching limits of concentration for toxic components.The concept of high power unit creation was developed, and galvanochemical pulsator is presented. The pulsator is not expensive, and exploitation expences are low, as well as servise is simple with high effectiveness, and capacity. The galvanoflotation process is developing, combining galvanochemistry and flotation of hydrofobic admixtures (oil, surface-active agents).The galvanochemical flotators are presented."

"It has been shown on the example of cassiterite that grinding in mills of the increased power lead to destruction of the fine crystal structure and consequently to change in physical and chemical properties of the mineral, that is its transition into mechanically activated state. The increase in mineral reactivity is related to both the growth of mineral specific surface and sharp decrease in the sizes of primary crystallites accompanied by essential increase in number of microdefects that is clearly expressed in its increasing solubility during interaction with corrosive mediums, especially with acids. Calorimetric measurements indicate that the thermal effect of SnO2 solubility increases considerably.These observations allow us to propose two techniques of hydrometallurgical treatment of cassiterite: direct dissolution of the mechanically activated mineral in acids, although it is a very power-consuming process, and mechanical activation of cassiterite in presence of metals that are able to release hydrogen from acids. Active hydrogen is released during interaction between the mechanical mixture of SnO2 and metal with acids and reduces tin from the mineral transferring it into solution.In addition to other technological properties, the flotability of cassiterite has been thoroughly studied. It has been found that it steadily decreases as activation proceeds because of increase in the degree of hydratability of particle’s surface. In this case, the mechanical activation is provided through tribotreatment of a surface rather than through fine grinding. On this basis we developed the technique of inverse cassiterite flotation with its subsequent transfer into a chamber product that considerably increase the quality of a tin concentrate.The observed technological effects may be generally explained by occurrence of the valenceundersaturated, strained (deformed) chemical bonds and other active centers on the cassiterite surface while decrease in its flotability - by formation of the hydrolyzed tin species and impurity iron, such as Sn(??)4°, Fe(??)2 +, Fe(??)3° hydroxocomplexes and others."

"Water availability and water-related environmental impacts are now one of the most significant challenges facing primary production within the global minerals industry. Whereas the industry has, to a large degree, been able to demonstrate a collective response to greenhouse gas emissions and global energy demand, no such strategy exists for water. In part, this is because water quality and availability are regional issues, but also too because water quality cannot be defined by a single attribute, and extrapolation of any set of water quality indices to their associated environmental impact is no trivial matter. In design situations specifically, the situation is exacerbated by the fact that process engineers typically focus on site water management, and consent authorities are primarily in catchment level issues. As a result, an integrated approach to water management is difficult. This does not stem from an unwillingness by members of the professional team to engage with the total picture of water quality and availability, but principally from the fact that there is no common language through which to approach the problem.It is imperative for process engineers to extend their design system boundary, to reflect the geographic scales over which water impacts need to be quantified. It is not suggested that chemical engineers and metallurgists should become experts in geochemistry, hydrology and limnology. Rather, the challenge is to develop tools through which better communication of the relevant environmental impacts can be achieved.It has been estimated that 50% of the capital for new plants is devoted to handling wastes. The integration of mass exchange processes, adopting a life cycle analysis framework for considering environmental impacts and shifting the emphasis from effluent concentration to environmental impacts should be adopted in the framing of the design problem have been suggested as techniques of Environmentally Conscious Design. Shifting the focus from effluent concentrations and legislative requirements to evaluating the environmental impact is an important step towards improving the overall environmental performance of a process facility."

"Autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding (AG and SAG) have been considered a step forward in comparison to conventional grinding circuits with several stages of crushing and using ball (and/or rod) grinding mills. However, existing AG and SAG technologies still can be improved and have an immense potential from the viewpoint of economic benefits.Experience gained by the Technics & Technologies of Disintegration Ltd. (TTD) in the research of grinding processes shows that comminution in AG and SAG mills can be performed in a more effective way. The company’s approach comprises the following elements:- Novel mill design- New liners and lifters- Novel discharge grid design- Technique of treating material of critical particle sizeA novel mill of the cantilever type capable to operate in the AG and SAG mode has been developed. The cantilevertype mill has a high diameter to length ratio, which dramatically increases the throughput rate, and is characterised by high reliability, fast installation and low capital and operating costs.Tests of the new heel-shaped liners, originally aimed at improving the intact condition of diamond, indicated that they play an important role in the grinding process. Tests performed by TTD jointly with ALROSA, MINTEK and Anglo-American Corporation, demonstrated that the heelshaped liners provided the increase in the throughput rate varying from 30 to 80 % and the decrease in power consumption in the range 30-55 % for grinding of kimberlite and platinum-containing ores.Investigation of the influence of the main grid parameters on the efficiency of grinding led TTD to a special design of a mill discharge grid, with a radial location of openings, the slot width varying from the periphery to the centre and the grid surface provided with “heels”. The design allows one to control the particle size distribution of the ground product without affecting the grid throughput rate."

"The results of CFD modelling of complex heat transfer and fluid flow in DC electric arc furnace are presented. The model includes energy and momentum conservation equations for gas phase (freeboard), liquid phase (molten bath) and solid phase (walls and graphite electrode). Simulation revealed the temperature distribution in all elements of the furnace. The influence of the arc and melt resistance on the temperature distribution is discussed.Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) becomes a powerful tool for better understanding of the heta and mass transfer processes in industrial equipment. In current work commercial CFD software STAR-CD was used to analyse complex heat transfer in DC EAF, including forced and natural convection, conduction and radiation. The finite volume solver using body-fitted grid was used. The grids are non-staggered hexahedral grids and all variables are evaluated at cell centers. Steady-state calculations were performed with PISO algorithm. For the convective terms in equations the hybrid differencing scheme was used. An upwind differencing scheme was used for other terms. Conjugative heat transfer was taken into account in heat transfer calculations on gas-liquid and gas-solid interfaces. Radiation from the arc and inner surfaces of the furnace was calculated by a “discrete beam” approach. Source term in energy conservation equation was used to represent heat release in the zone occupied by the DC electric arc. The volume of this zone was calculated from semi-empirical equations. The Joule heat and heat due to chemical reaction in the melt were calculated through the source term expression in the energy balance equations for the slag and metal in the molten bath. The gas acceleration in the electric arc zone and stirring of the slag due to gas bubbles motion were accounted for by momentum source terms in the momentum conservation equations.All simulations were carried out using axisymmetric two-dimensional grid. The grid resolution was 20 cm per cell in most part of the furnace, except the arc region, where resolution was 5 mm per cell."

"The minerals industry is being challenged to reduce the amount of virgin ore that is mined, and to replace this material through the recycling of used commodity items and scrap, or by the reprocessing of waste materials. It is argued here that the existing technology base of minerals processing and refining offers real potential for handling these secondary resources. The challenge is to develop tools by which the most preferable recycling routes (both economically and environmentally) can be identified from a list of feasible alternatives, taking into account any operational constraints of these technologies.This paper describes an heuristic approach to developing the family of all technically feasible flowsheets to address this challenge, from which a preferred option may be selected according to a set of decision criteria (economic and environmental). Our approach uses conventional flowsheeting techniques of selecting flow variables and splitter functions, supported by design performance information for each unit operation. This set of design decision variables is augmented by knowledge of the suitability of a particular waste or scrap stream for a given unit operation within a flowsheet. We achieve this by comparing the composition of the scrap stream with the range of mineral streams for which the unit operation was designed initially. This is inspired by the “overlap” approach proposed by Legarth, where an “overlap” of 1 would suggest that there is high degree of compatibility between a given secondary resource stream and a primary mineral stream as inputs to a specific technology. The “overlap” concept has been extended to include information about the physical characteristics of secondary resource streams, as well as information relating to synergistic / antagonistic influences of minor elements present in the waste stream. A flowsheet which delivers a product of acceptable quality from a given secondary resource material is built up from a progression of unit technologies. The exercise is repeated to generate the family of all feasible flowsheets from combinations of acceptable unit technologies."

"Battery grade Mn ore is not found in India except in Dongri-Buzurg Mine, Dist. Bhandara, Maharashtra. The mine located in central India is operated by a premier company viz. Manganese Ore India Ltd., under Central Government Public Sector Undertaking. The company is not selling the product as battery grade material but instead primarily catering to the needs of the iron and steel industry in the country. However, a part of the ore is being used in-house for the production of electrolytic manganese-dioxide in their EMD plant, which is located near the mine.The production of lumpy ore for steel industries generated through multi-stage crushing and screening has resulted in accumulation of about 50,000 tonnes of low grade fines over the year, which contain low of Mn values. Further, the generation of fines is still on going process due to the production of lumpy ores. These fines are stacked in the form of unconsolidated dumps, which create environmental problems like air and water pollution and siltation in the adjoining fields. Besides they are occupying large space, which is scarce in this mining area. The Indian Bureau of Mines under one of its statutory functions has suggested the company to explore the possibility of recovery of additional values under conservation and environmental aspects. Hence the company has sponsored a bulk sample for beneficiation studies in the Modern Mineral Processing Laboratory and Pilot Plant of Indian Bureau of Mines at Nagpur, India. The main manganese minerals present in these mine rejects have been identified as pyrolusite and psilomelane. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of evolving a suitable beneficiation flowsheet to obtain manganese concentrates assaying over 72% MnO2 to be used as raw material for the manufacturing of dry cell batteries."

"In order to intensify benefication processes (flotation and magnetic separation) for rebellious tantalitecolumbite ores electrochemical machining of pulp (ECM) is suggested instead of costly mechanic-chemical activation and magnetizing roasting. Any change in the surface mineral-semiconductor potential under the action of electrochemical treatment results in the change in the isoelectrical state of the surface and the adsorption property of the mineral with respect to ionogenic reagents-collectors. In this case conditions are created for regulating the ion composition, reduction-oxidation potential and pH of the liquid phase of the pulp without any extra introduction of expensive and often ecologically harmful chemical substances.Ores containing tantalum and niobium are characterized by complex chemical composition, determining their physical properties (conductivity, dielectric penetration, magnetization value, etc.) and their electric susceptibility.The authors investigations show that the pulp electrochemical treatment leads to the increasing magnetic susceptibility of the paramagnetic minerals. The main chemical elements forming the columbite-tantalite minerals except tantalum and niobium are iron and manganese. They determine the rare-metal minerals paramagnets properties. The electrochemical treatment changes the relation of the oxidized and reduced forms of these elements having. The method of cathode pulp treatment before flotation is successfully tested industrially.In the field of noble metals metallurgy new technological proposals are reduced to the following. As is know, the production of noble metals from unusual raw materials demands the elaboration of principally new technologies new technologies in so far as the methods for gold and silver extraction from ores are as a rule low elective and at the existing level of engineering are economically not expedient.The analysis of the main trends in the field of non-standard raw material treatment shows that the perspective ones are the geo- and biotechnological processes (underground leaching and leaching in heaps - UL and HL and microbiological methods of metal extraction)."

"INTRODUCTIONThis paper describes the inseparable relation between product design, liberation, and metallurgical recovery in the optimisation of the recycling of passenger vehicles. This is illustrated by the use of an optimisation model that uses among others a material combination matrix based on metallurgical process data, which depicts the consequences of the quality of intermediate recycling products on the metallurgical material recovery and final alloy metal quality. Various simulations will illustrate the effect of changes in product design and hence liberation on the recycling of end-of-life vehicles. Although this paper focuses on cars, the discussion is equally valid for any end-of-life product. Calibration of the model will be discussed with reference to experiments carried out in order to study the optimal recovery of aluminium applications used in passenger vehicles.OPTIMISATION MODEL FOR LINKING DESIGN TO RECYCLINGImproving the efficiency of the material cycle of the car is essential to ensure a sustainable development of our society as well as e.g. to comply with the recycling targets imposed by EU legislation. In the design of the car various materials are combined and connected in many different ways, making up the complex 'mineralogy' of the car and its components, which is changing rapidly and continuously over time. The liberation of materials during shredding plays an important role in the composition (and quality) of the intermediate recycling streams. In order to include the influence of product design (mineralogy), liberation, and particle composition (quality of the intermediate recycling streams) in the optimisation of the recycling of end-of-life vehicles, a systems engineering tool for optimisation of the recycling of end-of-life vehicles was developed, including a liberation model. The optimisation model predicts the recovery rate as a function of product design (in this case a car), liberation, efficiency of the different process steps, economy and legislation based on a developed recycling flow sheet for end-of-life vehicles. Optimisation can only be achieved through the combination of the knowledge areas of product design, shredding, mechanical separation technology linked to pyro- and hydrometallurgy, composing a complex interconnected network of unit operations."

"Some researchers postulate that the floatability of a particle in the streams of an industrial flotation circuit is a function of only its size and liberation properties. They do not discount the importance of reagent or surface contamination on particle floatability but assume that the reagent coverage or surface contamination of the particle surfaces is essentially uniform for particles of similar size and mineralogical properties when subjected to a particular chemical regime.In this paper, samples collected from laboratory batch flotation tests performed on different streams of Cominco Teck’s Red Dog lead cleaning circuit have been characterised with respect to their size, mineral association and mineral surface exposure. An analysis of this data set indicates that the flotation rate of a particle in an industrial flotation environment is a strong function of its size and also of the mineral composition of its surface (Figure 1). It is a function not only of the proportion of the most floatable mineral on its surface but of the floatability of the other minerals on its surface as well.Nodal analysis is a technique developed by the authors that can be used to determine if the ore floatability of a particle class is changing within an industrial flotation circuit. This technique is used within the paper to show that the floatability of all the different types of particle classes studied within the Red Dog circuit did not change significantly during the lead cleaning stage. However, it was also concluded that particles with the same size and mineral composition did not all float with the same rate in the individual streams of the flotation circuit, but with a distribution of rates. It is suspected that the particles within a size mineralogical class in this study have varying degrees of surface oxidation and that this results in varying particle flotation rates. Thus basing particle floatability on size and mineralogical effects, alone, in a flotation model is not always valid."

"As native gold resources are depleted, gold-sulfide ores consisting essentially of pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite become one of the major precious metal sources, being presently estimated to account for more than 40 % of total world gold reserves.The prime objective of flotation of gold-bearing sulfide minerals is to increase precious metal recovery and to reduce the product cost through achieving maximum selectivity of the separation process. Separation of Fe and As sulfides in selective flotation of gold-bearing ore products helps reduce the amount of ore mass being sent to hydrometallurgical processing, and permits of recovering gold from As-free gold-containing pyrite concentrate by using a lower-cost pyrometallurgical procedure.An ingenious methodology purposively developed by the authors for comprehensive assessment of flotation properties, electrophysical characteristics and crystal chemistry features of natural gold-bearing sulfide minerals of different origin has been used in this study.Comparison of the elemental composition, non-stoichiometry and flotation activity of different monomineralic pyrite varieties revealed that samples with negligible impurity content are nearly stoichiometric, and show similar flotation properties. Samples with high Cu, As and Au contents are highly non-stoichiometric and readily floatable, even in a highly alkaline environment. Samples with high surface sulfur content and the most defective crystal lattices, with iron atoms substituting for sulfide vacancies, are most sensitive to depressive action of the alkali.A correlation between the type of conductivity, impurity content and amount of xanthate compounds on the surface and in the liquid phase of monomineralic pyrite and arsenopyrite suspensions detected by the extractive spectrophotometric analysis has been identified and analyzed. Experiments showed that the proportion of cuprous xanthate in sorptive collector layers on sample surfaces increases with increasing Cu content of the samples. In general, pH for pH, overall xanthate sorption on pyrite is greater than on arsenopyrite, with the difference increasing in passing from an acid environment to an alkaline one. A significant decrease in xanthate sorption on arsenopyrite is observed at pH greater than 9, whereas sorption on pyrite markedly decreases at pH greater than 11."

"INTRODUCTIONIn a jig, which is primarily a coarse mineral concentration device, the bed of mineral particles is pulsated with a stream of water resulting in the particles of different specific gravities. It operates in a cyclic manner – the jig cycle consists of four stages, namely, inlet, expansion, exhaust and compression. In the inlet stage the bed lifts up en masse. Near the end of the lift stroke the particles at the bottom of the bed start falling resulting in the loosing of the bed which, in turn, causes its expansion or dilation. During the third and fourth stages the particle resettle through the fluid, and the bed collapses back to its original volume. The pulsation and suction are repeated to bring about stratification with respect to specific gravity across the bed height. Various parameters affecting the stratification process include amplitude and frequency of pulsation, bed thickness, rate of hutch water flow, and feed characteristics. This paper first presents a review of various jigging theories and then describes a new approach to mathematical modeling of jigging employing the discrete element method.JIG MODEL BASED ON DISCRETE ELEMENT METHOD (DEM) APPROACHThe jig models based on DEM essentially involve tracking the position of each particle incrementally, applying Newton’s law of motion and a force displacement law at the contact. The model presented here is based on a three dimensional mathematical description of solid-solid and fluid-solid interactions. In this model, the force balance on a particle is extended to account for the effect of continuously varying fluid on the particle. The total force on each particle is made up of a known external body force, fluid particle interaction force and particle-particle and/or particle-wall interaction force. The fluid-particle interactive force is primarily made of drag and buoyancy. Di Felice’s correlation is used to evaluate the drag force. Solid-solid interaction is described by treating particles as discrete elements that are indestructible but interact with each other and any other elements present, such as walls, when they make physical contacts. A pair of spring and dashpot represents a contact The contact forces are computed from the amount and the rate of overlap of the particles at the contact. The motion of the particle is due to movement of the fluid, which transmits its energy through the particle-particle contacts. A computer program incorporating both the contact and the fluid model has been developed. It takes the operating parameters such as amplitude and frequency of the pulsating fluid, pertinent data concerning particle properties and the geometry of the jig bed as inputs."

"The mineral processing research community has devoted enormous efforts to the modelling of mineral separators over the last 50 years. While many efforts have been made to use only fundamental physics as a basis for the models, fluid flow patterns in separators are not simple while the motion of particle swarms through fluids is extremely complex.Sluices are the simplest forms of the flowing film concentrators and have been used in the mineral industry since at least the 15th century (Agricola, 1556). Flowing film concentrators, in general, still have widespread applications in the mineral industry and their designs vary according to the specific need.Particle separation in a sluice appears deceptively simple, but the separation mechanism has proven complex and difficult to quantify. Separation in the sluice takes place in a flowing film a few millimetres thick. The particles are suspended by turbulent eddies and motion relative to the fluid takes place in socalled hindered settling mode. The difficulty arises because the presence of the particles influences the flow pattern and when the particles are fully transported by the flow, the flowing slurry may not have the same viscosity as water and does not have the same density. For this reason a universal theory which can explain the behaviour of a suspension in a sluice or any other gravity equipment has still not been developed. Few attempts have been made to analyse the mechanisms involved in the concentrating processes of pinched sluices and Reichert cones.Fluid flow behaviour and slurry transportation characteristics in open channels have, however, been active research topics in the disciplines of fluid mechanics, chemical engineering and civil engineering for many years. As a result, an extensive literature is available, which has led to the development of the model described in this paper.In an effort to test the extent to which fundamental fluid mechanics can provide a prediction of particle separation, a study on a simple parallel-sided sluice has been carried out using glass beads at various particle concentrations and flow rates, and the actual particle separation taking place compared to predictions from modelling.The modelling strategy was divided into two parts; the first was to predict the horizontal slurry flow velocity profile and the second to predict the solid particle concentration over the depth of the flow at different flow conditions. The predictions were then validated with measured data sets. This can easily be done if the slurry flow is split at different fractional flow depths so that the mass flow of solids over different flow heights is measured accurately over a fixed period. Mass flow splits can then be calculated by integrating the product of the predicted slurry velocity profile and the predicted solids concentration profiles from the base of the sluice bed to the slurry free surface."

"Anglogold’s Mponeng Mine is situated in South Africa’s North West Province approximately 80km from Johannesburg. The reefs being mined in this area are among the deepest deep level mining operations in the world. These shafts often exceed several thousand meters making these operations complex and expensive.The gold plant is fed with run-of-mine ore which is stored in mill silos. Feedrate to the mills is controlled by a variable speed belt. Three parallel SAG mills (4.85 x 9m) treat 80-100tph, operating in closed circuit. Hydrocyclones classify the mill discharge, returning the oversize to the mill feed. Cyclone feed density and pressure are measured and are used with typical control loops to determine water addition rates to the mill. Control loops at PLC/SCADA level were historically used with limited success in the control of the milling circuits. Mill control for an installation of this type used mill mass (measured by load cells) and feedrate to control throughput. An online particle size analyser (PSI) was installed to assist grind control in tandem with pressure/density control on the cyclones. Although the accuracy of the measured grind was reliable, long term consistency of the PSI could not be guaranteed. Economic pressure from the business sector requires consistent mill throughput at optimum grind conditions. Fluctuations in production targets can manifest due to inconsistent control and the lack of real-time information from the process.This sensitivity to process movements may vary between shifts and also with changes in ore competency.Whilst tools are available to improve control, few have the sensitivity to process movements to provide real-time information for optimal grind control. For this reason an Advanced Control solution was sought. Advanced Control is often described as the supervision of basic PLC/SCADA control. Advanced control systems have to seamlessly compliment the existing control strategy and bridge the gap that exists between basic control and optimised control. A solution was found in the Metso Minerals CISA’s OCS (Optimising Control System). This French designed system makes changes to process setpoints to achieve peak performance and is distinguished from others by its soft sensor capabilities. The soft sensor is an embedded module in the OCS package that can be configured to estimate values normally obtained from field instruments. Advanced control using a Fuzzy Expert System assisted by Statistical tools (such as moving averages and a Soft Sensor using Phenomenological Models) would serve to bridge that gap. Metso Minerals CISA’s OCS is a modular system with various capabilities.It was successfully used to provide on-time process information via Soft Sensors. Circuit stability was achieved using Rule Based Expert Control in complete synergy with Fuzzy Logic. Two rule-based strategies were developed for this circuit. The first uses the online product size analyser as a primary control variable. The second uses a calculated kWh/t value and a modelled mill discharge density as primary control variables. The latter had more availability than the particle analyser and is currently in use."

Carbonates have gained significant economic importance for the human kind. On one hand over a hundred uses are listed for carbonates. On the other hand, carbonates host base metal deposits. Although the carbonates play a significant part in the development of those deposits, in the mineral processing they consume acid and cause selectivity problems during flotation and leaching. Carbonates also accompany other industrial minerals as waste rock. For all those cases it necessary to find a technique to separate carbonate as early as possible in the processing chain. In this paper, the applicability of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) sorting for the separation of carbonates is discussed. NIRS sorting is a sensor-based sorting technique, in which particles are singularly detected by a sensor and then rejected by an amplified mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic process. This technique can for example be implemented in the process as a pre-concentration step for coarse particle sizes up to 300 mm. NIRS sorting discriminates among materials based on the difference that exist between their spectral properties in the near-infrared (NIR). Vibrations of molecular bonds in carbonates cause characteristic spectral properties in the NIR, which makes carbonates detectable, possible to identify, distinguish and separate from other rock materials. The spectral properties can also be used to distinguish between different carbonate minerals and mixtures. If the spectral variations are large enough for detection, sorting based on NIRS is possible. Feasibility studies on sensor-based separation of carbonates in the processing of talc, borate, fluorite, marble, zinc-oxides, copper sulphide and iron ore as well as the discrimination of calcite and dolomite mixtures are conducted and indicate the high potential of NIRS sorting in the minerals industry.
