"Paramount to sound aggregate resource management is an awareness of what resources exist. For the past six years, New Brunswick has been conducting granular aggregate resource inventories in and around urban centres as a means of documenting, both qualitatively and quantitatively, these resources.These aggregate studies require extensive ground truthing due to the often small nature of the surficial feature s as well as extensive foliage. Approximately 35% of the province's land mass has been mapped at a 1:50,000 scale as part of this on-going program. Reports are published annually and include data on size analysis, lithology soundness, abrasion and absorption.Aggregate deposits in New Brunswick frequently reflect the local bedrock lithology and, whereas much of New Brunswick is underlain by soft, friable sandstone of Pennsylvanian age, it is necessary to transport aggregate for higher-specification use considerable distances. Alternatively, the construction industry must turn to crushed stone as a source of asphaltic or concrete aggregate.Over 40% of New Brunswick's land mass is owned by the Crown, and aggregate resources are managed under the Quarriable Substances Act. Under this legislation, permit applications are reviewed by a Land Management Advisory Committee which consists of representatives from the various government departments involved.IntroductionSurficial materials either directly or indirectly form the basis of much of our economic activity, whether it is the field of agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, construction or other. "Power requirements of belt conveyor drives are usually estimated based on the calculated belt tension which equals the sum of unit resistances to motion which the belt has to overcome. In most situations, the value of various unit resistances can be accurately predicted using published information (5,6,8,12). A simpler approach calls for use of standard formula and tabulated values of related factors which reflect various features of both the conveyor and the transported material (2,3,7) . None of these approaches is reliable when materials with unique properties are conveyed, nor if applied to conveyors working in extreme climatic conditions. Such is the case of oil sand mines in northern Alberta.There the bitumen content of oil sand causes it to behave in a unique manner. Furthermore the conveyors operate year around, with winter temperatures often lower than - 40°C. It was the objective of presented investigations to quantify the power requirements of conveyors, and related resistance to motion for the conveyors used in oil sand mines during winter operations.The other objective was to quantify the drive power requirements of oil sand conveyors during start-up. These requirements are usually much higher than those during norm al operation, and their quantification is of paramount importance for operation of large conveyors."

"Ontario enjoys the advantage of its proximity to the large industrial market of northeastern North America. Together with Quebec and fifteen nearby U.S. states, an industrial base of more than half the total for both countries is provided by a population of 100 million.Mineral fillers such as barite, calcium carbonate, kaolin, mica, silica and talc are of major importance in the manufacture of paper, paint, plastics, rubber, vinyl tile, carpet backing, putty, caulks, sealants and adhesives. Ontario has all of these minerals, but domestic production falls short of demand in some cases, and mica and kaolin are not produced at all.This paper reviews the market and outlines the distribution of the major filler-consuming plants of northeastern North America. It also identifies the principal producers of filler minerals in the United States and Canada.IntroductionOf all the uses for industrial minerals, mineral fillers are probably the least understood. Originally used primarily to add low-cost bulk to a variety of commodities without seriously affecting their properties, filler minerals have become essential components that enhance and extend the properties of their hosts. Hence the term ""extender"" which, for all practical purposes, is synonymous with ""filler"". Today, fillers and extenders are not solely low-cost additives, but ingredients that provide essential characteristics to the products they fill.The major markets for mineral fillers are paint, paper, plastics, rubber, adhesives and floor coverings. But there are many others: putty, pesticides, wire and cable coatings, caulking and asphaltic compounds, oilcloth, wall-paper, joint cements, inks, sealants and many others. Barite, calcium carbonate, kaolin, mica, silica and talc are among the more important filler minerals discussed in this paper, but there are at least a dozen others. And the increasing practice of coating the mineral surfaces with certain coupling agents or metal stearates is constantly expanding the range of characteristics and hence the marketing opportunities.Whiteness, particle shape, fineness of grind and cost are the principal considerations in selecting a filler, but other characteristics such as weight, opacity, hardness and chemical inertness may be dominant considerations in specific applications."

"Modular, predesigned diamond recovery plants have been a feature of the diamond mining industry for more than 20 years. The reasons for the selection of such a design route are contrasted with the alternative option of custom-designed route and the relative merits of the two approaches are discussed. The predesigned, modular plant is shown to be particularly applicable for the smaller operation, whether as part of a diverse alluvial mine, an auditing facility for an adjacent large plant, bulk sampling or a remote installation such as is envisaged in the Canadian diamond industry. The characteristics of the predesigned modular plant are described, as well as the inevitable compromises resulting from the concept. IntroductionThis paper explores the application of predesigned modular plants to the diamond mining industry and contrasts their features with the custom-designed installation .A predesigned modular plant is a self-contained unit, or a number of self-contained units, which, when assembled , make up a treatment facility. This is usually small scale in treatment capacity, although multiple modules may be used to increase over-all throughput.A move toward the use of such plants in the diamond mining industry resulted from the relatively unsophisticated nature of the design , the proven nature of pretested , standard plants and the low cost per tonne of capacity and their specific application in remote locations.The recovery of heavy minerals by dense medium separation (DMS) is intrinsically safe and more efficient than the older methods, such as jigs and rotary pans.All diamond recovery plants feature three distinct sections:• feed preparation• gravity separation, and• final recovery."

Traditional prospecting and boulder tracing are the two most important field techniques used in exploration for magnesite deposits hosted by sedimentary rocks. Consequently, success depends largely on the prospector's ability to identify magnesite. A density agent called sodium polytungstate (3Na2W04·9WOj'HPJ was successfully used to determine the presence of magnesite in sedimentary carbonate rocks of southeastern British Columbia. A rapid field method was developed and tested. This method permits discrimination between limy dolomites, dolomites, magnesite-bearing dolomites and magnesite-rich rocks.

"On the basis of differences derived from genetic, descriptive, and grade-tonnage data, graphite deposits are classified here into three deposit types: disseminated flake, amorphous (microcrystalline), or graphite veins. Descriptive models have been constructed for each of these deposit types, and grade-tonnage models are constructed for disseminated flake and amorphous deposit types. Grade and tonnage data are used also to construct grade-tonnage models that assist in predicting the size and grade of undiscovered graphite deposits. The median tonnage and carbon grade of disseminated flake deposits are 240 000 tonnes and 9% carbon and for amorphous deposits, 130 000 tonnes and 40% carbon. The differences in grade between disseminated flake and amorphous deposit types are statistically significant, whereas the differences in amount of contained carbon are not .IntroductionIndustrial minerals, including mineral construction materials such as sand, gravel, and crushed stone, have historically exceeded metals in global production value. Today, industrial minerals are being used in new and sophisticated ways in response to the late 1980s emerging information- and service-based economies' requirements for less metal and more industrial minerals . Natural graphite is an example of one such mine ral that has been known since ancient times, and is now finding new applications. Graphite was first used as an industrial mineral in Bavaria in 1400 A.D. where it was an important component of crucibles. Traditionally, natural graphite has been used in heavy industries. New applications, such as development of carbon-magnesite bricks a decade ago and the current advancement of alumina/graphite refractories, are increasing its graphite use. Other new uses for natural graphite, such as the use of graphite powder as a thermal blanket for the continuous casting o f steel (Northern Miner, 1987) and the addition of expanded graphite to polyurethane foam where it acts as a flame retardant (Industrial Minerals, 1987), are increasing the demand for this mineral. To meet future demand for graphite and other industrial minerals, knowledge of the characteristics of the deposit types in which they are found is important. A further look at the deposit types for graphite and at construction of descriptive and grade-tonnage models is warranted .The graphite industry recognizes three basic types of graphite , distinguished primarily on the basis of grain size: crystalline flake, lump and chip, and amorphous. These naturally occurring forms of graphite are products of metamorphism and are found in schists of various types, gneisses, and marbles. Temperatures of at [east 400°C are thought to be required for graphite formation (Landis, 1971). Synthetic graphite, also known as artificial or manufactured graphite, is a man-made carbon product and offers higher purity and lower crystallinity than natural graphite. Several authors have written about graphite's unique physical and chemical properties and the uses for individual types of graphite (Krauss et 01., 1988; Graffin, 1983; and Harben and Bate s, 1984)."

"Three varieties of till are recognized in the Beardmore-Geraldton area: local lodgement till, nonlocal carbonate till, and local supraglacial till. The local lodgement till unit is examined in detail for the first time in this paper. It is the best potential overburden exploration medium for gold and other metals because its particles were locally-derived and deposited subglacially, probably within a few kilometres downglacier (southwestward) from their sources, and have not been diluted by distantly-derived glacialdebris. Both local tills are richer in gold and other metals, relative to nonlocal carbonate till. Local lodgement till rests on bedrock and was encountered frequently at or near the surface in thin drift/bedrock terrain (a widespread terrain type within the west half of the study area), and commonly at the base of boreholes in thick till terrain.INTRODUCTIONDrift prospecting in areas of glaciated terrain has been well documented (in a variety of journal publications and symposium volumes; e.g . Strobel and Faure 1987; MacDonald and Mills 1988) and has proven valuable especially where overburden thicknesses hinder traditional exploration techniques. Drift prospecting techniques may well prove valuable in the Beardmore Geraldton area. This applies especially to the Wildgoose Lake Turkey Lake area where a thick and laterally extensive sheet of nonlocal carbonate till has impeded conventional mineral exploration programs (Fig. I; note the lack of gold occurrences around Wildgoose Lake).Till in .particular has been cited as the best prospecting medium among the various types of glacial sediment (e.g. Shilts 1984). Three end member till varieties are recognized in the study area: (I) local lodgement till which rests directly on bedrock; (2) non local carbonate till; and (3) local supraglacial till which occurs predominatly within, or just downglacier of, upland areas where it commonly mantles the other till varieties. Previous authors have documented how the non local carbonate till hinders gold exploration (Geddes and Kristjansson 1986; Karrow and Geddes 1987; Kristjansson 1986; Hicock 1986, 1987a, b, 1988; Kristjansson and Thorieifson 1987; Thorleifson and Kristjansson 1987, 1988a, b) and why the local supraglacial till may be a good unit for prospecting (Hicock 1986). One detailed surficial geology map sheet of the area has been published (Kristjansson et al., 1988) and others are in preparation. Closs and Sado (1981) reported on the geochemistry of soils and glacial sediments in the west half of the study area. This paper documents the local lodgement till unit and demonstrates why it is the best overburden unit to use for drift prospecting."

"The application of control theory in mineral processing is more difficult than in other industries because of the complex nature of the unit processes involved and because of problems with accurate on stream measurement of process variables. Conventional control is based on proportional, integral and derivative functions of a continuously measured error term. Computer control can enhance these actions by incorporating logical routines to switch from one relationship to another. The success of this logical approach depends on our understanding of the process dynamics and the stability of the process and model under all conditions. Typically the model does not apply at all times in mineral processing because of frequent and unmeasurable changes in the ore parameters.Recent advances in the theory of fuzzy sets have led to the application of this science to process control. Fuzzy Logic can be used to develop heuristic or rule-of-thumb controllers with the strategy based on the actual operating practice of experienced plant operators. Control action has increased flexibility through the adaptation of human reasoning. Acceptance of the control system by operating personnel is significantly higher because of their participation in its formulation. The requirement of an exact model is not essential.A heuristic controller has been designed and tested with a computer simulation model of a secondary crushing plant. The results of this study are discussed and future applications of this control technique to other mineral processes are suggested. Mineral processes typically are characterized by non-linear relationships between input and output variables. Many of these variables cannot be monitored accurately on-stream and so long time lags on the measurement loop are features of the system. The processes, themselves, often have long time-varying responses while the process loads fluctuate significantly on a short-term basis.Attempts to control these processes have led to the formulation of mathematical models to describe each unit activity. Adaptive techniques have also been tried to compensate and account for process changes and vageries. These approaches are mathematically rigorous so that their complexity and precision limit their usefulness when applied to ""vague"" processes."

"The CIM Careers Task Force has addressed industry's concern of a perceived shortage of skilled personnel over the coming decade. The industry is faced with a fundamental shift by young Canadians away from scientific and engineering careers, coupled with the fact that today 's students know little about the minerals industry and have a poor image of it.The responses to two questionnaires which were distributed to CIM members, government, professional associations, and educational institutions, formed the backbone of the Task Force position paper, which presents a shopping list of ideas and initiatives for consideration and to facilitation by the various organizations concerned.Tackling the image of the minerals industry is part of the answer to the careers crisis. On the positive side, the minerals industry provides the allure of a treasure hunt for young people and is seen as a significant contributor to the economy. It is understood to be well paying, provide good opportunities for advancement, individualism, and travel, and to be rich in esprit de corps. Enhancement of these positive aspects of the image can take place at all student age levels.Numerous initiatives tackle the negative aspects of the image. Young people perceive the industry to be environmentally damaging, which is the most crucial aspect that needs to be addressed. The industry is seen as still in the pick-and-shovel days and as a sunset industry that is running out of ore. Work in the minerals industry is perceived as dangerous and lacking glamour. And finally, the perceived remoteness of operations and exploration is seen as a drawback to a largely urbanized student group.Tackling young peoples' curiosity and interest in the minerals industry throughout grade school and encouraging postsecondary science and engineering students to enter the minerals industry by ensuring summer employment is the second part of the equation.The CIM Careers Task Force position paper develops strategy to attract and maintain interest of students in grade school, junior high, senior high school, and in post-secondary levels. The strategy outlines initiatives targetted at each of the educational levels and action plans to accomplish the objectives."

"The presence of excessive water in the Gibraltar East Stage 1 pit initiated studies into the ground-water conditions that might be expected in mining the Granite Lake and Pollyanna pits. Hydrologic information obtained from a pump test program in 1974 indicated that deep-well dewatering could be successfully achieved. In 1976, a deep-well dewatering system consisting of eight wells was installed on the periphery of the Pollyanna pit . it has been responsible for a significant decrease in mining costs.This paper presents a brief summary of the engineering principles involved in the design of the Gibraltar dewatering system and the problems encountered in the installation and operation of deep-well pumps. IntroductionGibraltar Mines is an open-pit copper-molybdenite mine located approximately 230 air miles north of Vancouver in the central interior of British Columbia (Fig. I). The property consists of three separate major orebodies; Gibraltar East, Granite Lake and Pollyanna (Fig. 2). Mining commenced during the summer of 1971, in the Gibraltar East Stage 1 pit. The Granite Lake Stage 1 pit was mined from mid 1974 to mid 1976. The Pollyanna Stage 1 pit is currently being mined and the Gibraltar East Stage 2 is being developed for production. This report is intended as an outline of the studies and tests leading up to and including the installation of the Pollyanna pit dewatering system, the problems encountered and the results obtained.GeneralIn the summer of 1973, mining in the Gibraltar East pit progressed below ""daylight"" on the down-hill side and ground water very quickly became a costly nuisance in the day-to-day mining operations. Mining, maintenance and blasting costs reflected these problems. Concern was also voiced about adverse effects of ground water on pit wall stability. This concern later became a reality in the Gibraltar East and Granite Lake pits. A study was initiated to investigate various methods and costs of dewatering the pit areas. The study included in-pit sumps, deep peripheral wells and a drainage gallery system located below the pits."

"As part of a study to evaluate factors affecting tankroom air quality, the mechanism of aerosol generation from bursting bubbles in electrowinning operations has been investigated. Typically 2 to 3 mg/m2.s are produced in zinc tankrooms. Analysis shows that the rate of production of film drops (geometric mean diameter - 2 urn] increases with decreasing bubble size, and that jet droplets (geometric mean diameter - 20 um) are not produced with gas bubble larger than - 4 mm. Both mechanisms of drop formation and current efficiency are affected by surface active agents, with an over-all reduction in emission of up to 60% to 70% being achievable. A source control system which does not adversely affect electrolyte properties is always preferred, and coalescence of all gas bubbles in to a continuous stream of gas at a single point on the electrolyte surface would eliminate aerosol emissions. This objective was the basis for design of a coalescence device which, in laboratory tests, reduced the emission rate by over 95%.The control device fit s over the electrodes in the electrowinning cell and is partially immersed in the electrolyte. A number of changes in the design which resulted in significant improvement in the performance of the device are reported.Field tests have shown that only about 75% of the aerosol below 10 um can be eliminated by coalescence. The remainder (up to 95% of the total) is controlled by coalescence of droplets, by impaction on the exposed collector surface and gravitational settling.The device does not interfere with operation of the tankroom, handles the effect of surges in power during harvesting, and is simple and inexpensive to maintain. IntroductionDuring the electrowinning of metals (such as zinc and copper) gases are evolved along the electrode surface forming small bubbles. The bubbles travel upwards and burst on the electrolyte free surface generating, in this way, small droplets. Because the electrolyte is often highly acidic or contains toxic materials, the whole process can result in the formation of an aerosol in the atmosphere above the electrowinning cells which poses a serious health hazard to workers in the area, and corrodes equipment."

The cost benefits of controlling dilution of extracted ore have been very well understood by miners and mining professionals for many years. However, as we strive towards more mechanization, the dilution factor has been compromised in order to fit ?equipment? that is better suited to provide improved safety and productivity. Alternately, the drilling and ground support is accomplished by handheld drilling. In 2007, a short study, commissioned by CAMIRO (Canadian Mining Industry Research Organization) on the safety of hand held drilling vs. mechanized drilling, concluded that the risk of injury with handheld drills was seven times greater than with mechanized drills. Armed with this data, MEDATech Engineering proposed to the CAMIRO group to fund development of a ?MICRO Bolter?.

"IntroductionSince the disappearance of Les Forges du Saint-Maurice at the end of the last century, many historians have taken an interest in the lengthy past of this enterprise. They considered the political, socio-economic, administrative and anecdotal aspects of the industry, but barely dealt with the elements of technology. The purpose of this article is to try to fill this gapru.Les Forges du Saint-Maurice was an integrated industrial concern, specializing in the production of semi-finished wrought iron and finished cast iron, that operated almost without interruption between 1734 and 1883. Les Forges first came into being in 1729, when Montreal merchant Francois Poulin de Francheville submitted to the king of France a request for the right to exploit the bog iron ore deposits on his seigneury of Saint-Maurice. This request, agreed to in 1730, was one of a long series of attempts, previously unsuccessful, to establish a local iron industry in the colony. Several such proposals were held up by a lack of capital from promoters or a too rigid application of the mercantilist policy by the metropolis. In 1730, however, the French minister Maurepas favoured a more liberal policy which would encourage private enterprise. The benefits of an iron industry to the naval construction industry was a factor that caught the attention of administrators. The choice of the site for Les Forges was based on the following factors:• the abundance of surface deposits of bog iron ore in the Saint-Maurice region;• the presence of a vast supply of hardwood and conifers needed in large quantities by this industry;• the proximity of sandstone and limestone deposits, indispensable materials for the construction and operation of the blast furnace;• the presence of a water stream, with sufficient flow to provide the hydraulic power needed for the operation of the machinery."

"The decision to invest capital in developing a mine and constructing a mineral processing plant and services is usually made after a feasibility study shows 'that the estimated future cash flow from mine operations will yield an adequate return on the estimated capital expenditures.The actual return on investment may differ substantially from that estimated in the feasibility study, because of the probabilities of errors in estimating capital costs, ore reserves, operating costs, mineral revenue and operating productivity. This paper outlines the R.S.S. (root sum of squares) risk analysis procedure of computing the overall probability of the actual project D.C.F. (rate of discounted cash flow), differing from that estimated in the feasibility study.Variation in Project D.C.F.It is assumed that a feasibility study of the project has been completed which has defined the estimated values for all the project parameters, such as ore reserve tons and grade, capital cost, concentrate recovery, metal revenue, daily milling capacity and operating costs.The financial analysis of the mining project will have determined that the cumulative cash flow will yield an expected D.C.F. on the capital cost if all project parameters attain the estimated values. If, however, the actual value of any parameter varies from that estimated, the actual project D.C.F. will vary from the estimated D.C.F. Risk analysis methods attempt to determine the overall effect of probable variations in the estimated values of all project parameters on the D.C.F. of the mining project. This overall effect is expressed as a probability profile, which shows the likelihood of actual D.C.F. values greater or less than that estimated.Thus, a completed risk analysis of a mine project, with an expected D.C.F. of 15.51%, would display the characteristics shown in the preceding diagram."

"IntroductionInco Limited operates nine underground mines on the rim of the Sudbury Basin. These operation s are situated near the city of Sudbury, 589 km west of Montreal, and 363 km north of Toronto. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, and the principal minerals are pentlandite, chalcopyrite , and pyrrhotite. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 51 000 tons per day.The total volume of fresh air supplied to the nine mines is six million cu.ft/min. There are 50 main fans in operation at these mines, powered by electric motors totaling 11 200 kW (15 000 hp).The trend in metal mining during recent years towards mechanization and high-tonnage production methods has greatly increased ventilation requirements. The now of air must quickly dilute and carry away diesel exhaust fumes, dust created by mining operations, and the fumes of the explosives used in blasting. Mechanical ventilation is required to obtain the necessary volume and control, as natural ventilation pressures alone are, for the most part, inadequate and unreliable. In the event of a mine fire or other needs, close control of ventilation is essential.There are two unique heating systems presently in operation at Inco: Creighton Natural Heat Exchanger and Stobie Ice Stopes."

In order to maximize the recovery of ore and to save on costs in undercut mining, backfill of low cement content is used to fill the mined out excavations. This backfill mass is supported by a sillmat structure cast from cemented backfill of very high strength. The stability design of sillmats must be carefully studied to provide very effective, safe and economic mining operations. This paper presents a methodology and procedures for sillmat design based on three engineering modeling approaches: analytical, numerical and centrifuge modeling. Application of the design approach is demonstrated from a design study conducted for an underground gold mine, aimed at minimizing backfill binder content and at producing cost efficient paste fill recipes for sillmat construction. Application of the engineering design recommendations was projected to result in substantial annual cost savings to the mine operation.

"The Lac Knife graphite deposit was estimated, as part of a feasibility study, using a geostatistical ore reserve estimation method: ordinary kriging. Based on the geology and its interpretation, the results of a variogram study, and the statistical parameters of the grade distribution of the core samples and the composites through the mineralization, the deposit was divided into three separate zones (west, centre and east), and each of these zones was then analyzed and kriged independently.The geological ore reserve estimation results of ordinary kriging are compared to the results of a conventional method (sections) used previously. The two methods gave almost similar reserve figures. The conventional method provided a +2% estimation for tonnage and + 10% for grade because it ignored the spatial relation between sections and samples, and ordinary kriging gave a more accurate longitudinal definition of the deposit.Finally, the paper concludes with the advantages of proceeding with ordinary kriging, namely: higher flexibility (change of cut-off grade), better deposit resolution and enhanced selectivity for the design of the open pit.IntroductionWithin the context of a complete feasibility study for the Société d' Exploration Minière Mazarin Inc., specialists of the Mines and Geology Division of Roche Ltd., Consulting Group, defined a modelling method appropriate to the graphite deposit of the Lac Knife property near Fennont. Many patterns were considered. Based on the geology of this deposit, the planned mining method, the statistical parameters of grade distribution and the variogram study, the process of reserve estimation retained was to use the ordinary kriging in a selective way. "Canada has a special place in non-ferrous pyrometallurgy because it is the only country in the western world that is a significant producer of all the major non-ferrous metals; aluminum, copper, lead, magnesium, nickel and zinc. This large non-ferrous pyrometallurgy industry has developed because of Canada's abundant mineral wealth and energy resources. Table I summarizes the number of primary non-ferrous production facilities in Canada and their share of western world production.Production of non-ferrous metals is a mature, capital intensive business and its basic processes have been in use for many years. Nevertheless, these processes have continued to evolve in response to changing needs and external pressures; such as the energy crisis of the early seventies; historically low metal prices in the early eighties and the continuing pressure to reduce plant emissions and improve in-plant working conditions. Canada's major metallurgical companies: Alcan, Cominco, Falconbridge, Inco and Noranda have played a leading role in pioneering new process technology and continue to meet the difficult challenge of keeping their operations competitive in the global metals market. This paper will try to give an overview of the major developments in non-ferrous pyrometallurgy, largely from the Noranda and Canadian perspectives, highlighting the current status of process technology and possible future directions.AluminumCanada has the world's second largest aluminum smelting industry and its capacity has expanded rapidly in recent years with the completion of several large projects in Quebec. The location and capacity of the Canadian aluminum smelters are given in Table 2. All these plants use the Hall-Heroult process, that was invented over a century ago but over the last twenty years considerable improvements have been made to increase productivity, reduce power requirements and emissions.The developments in aluminum cell technology can be illustrated by the experience at Noranda Aluminum. In 1971, Noranda Aluminum started its first pot line using Kaiser's P69 prebake cell, which was considered, at that time, the best available technology. The P69 cell was designed primarily for high productivity, operating at 150 000 amps and high current density to produce just over tonne Al per cell-day. The P69 cell is a simple design, typically operating at about 88070 current efficiency and 15 800 kWh/tonne Al. When Noranda Aluminum decided to expand in 1980, the Alcoa 697 cell was selected as it then represented the most proven, stateof- the-art technology. This cell is similar to that installed at Alcan's new Grande Baie and Laterriere smelters and is designed to operate at 180000 amps and 93070 current efficiency, producing about 25070 more aluminum per pot-day than the P69 cell using about 15070 less power. The 697 cell has a much more sophisticated cell design, with very good balancing of the magnetic field giving a flat metal pad and allowing efficient operation at the higher amperage. Alumina is fed via point feeders that provide an almost continuous feed allowing close control of the alumina level in the bath and the use of low-ratio bath composition, giving much higher current efficiencies."

"Amok Ltd./Cluff Mining operates a uranium mine at Cluff Lake in northern Saskatchewan. The project consists of one open pit and one underground mining operation along with a full-scale milling installation.The underground stoping operations are of the narrow vein type and are done between two levels 50 m apart. The mining method is undercut with concrete backfilling. Cuts are 3.5 m in height and can be as narrow as 1.4 m in width.Stoping operations are mechanized utilizing a CT-500E electric Microscoop marketed in Canada by Teledyne. The machine is only 85 cm in width and does all the mucking in stopes. Ore passes are provided in stope roughly every 40 m to 50 m.This paper describes the utilization of the CT-500E Microscoop in the company's underground operations and provides performance data related to the experience.IntroductionThe Amok Ltd ./Cluff Mining operation is located in the northwestern corner of Saskatchewan. The project started in 1980 with open pit mining and milling operations. In 1983, an underground mining operation began production . Today, the Amok Ltd./Cluff Mining installation produces 800 tonnes of uranium per year , which originates from both the open pit and the underground mine at about the same proportion."
