The bulk of the worldÆs production of iron ore is processed into steel. The needs of the steel industry therefore demand a high exploration and exploitation of iron ore. One trend within the industry has been a great increase in the demand of iron ore and this is reflected in an increase in world steel production from 1955 to date. In addition to the high demand for steel, is ChinaÆs high appetite to feed its steel industry. It is therefore important that the iron ore potential of Ghana is showcased for eventual exploitation by potential investors to meet this enormous demand for the commodity in the industry globally. Ghana has three main iron deposits of potential industrial and commercial importance. They are: Shieni sedimentary iron ore (reserves: 1.270 X 106 metric tonnes), Pudo titaniferous-magnetiferous iron ore and the Opon-Mansi lateritic iron ore deposits. The Opon-Mansi iron ore deposit occurs in the Western region of Ghana. The ore deposits are located on top of the range of 15 hills, which extend over a distance of 24 km from Opon-valley, south of the Western region to Dunkwa. The area has an estimated 147 Mt of iron deposit, with Fe content of 52.5 per cent. This paper looks at the iron ore potential of Ghana and how it is capable of attracting potential investors to exploit this valuable mineral for global consumption.

In the last two decades, equipment used in the coal mining operations has become much more sophisticated. The way that work is organised and performed in the industry has also changed significantly. Changes in equipment specification or procedures inevitably means that the risk associated with that equipment or procedure also changes. In an attempt to address this the Joint Coal Board Occupational Health and Safety Trust (JCB) commissioned the University of New South Wales Mining Research Centre and Mine Site Technologies to perform a feasibility study into the development and deployment of Virtual Reality (VR) based training simulators in the New South Wales coal industry. The main aims of the study were to identify, the key providers of VR Technology, the VR options available to the JCB and the information that would need to be included in any simulator. It was anticipated that a critical assessment of these components would produce a format for a cost effective, state of the art simulator that could be readily accessed by all mines. The expectations of the feasibility study were that VR should offer three-dimensional (3D) simulations that are interactive, high-resolution models of real environments based on best practice Safety Management Plans. It was anticipated that the simulations would allow trainees to experience the consequences of poor decision-making and allow them to learn from their mistakes in a safe and forgiving environment. It was envisaged that such simulators would become an addition to the existing training methods used in the industry.

Significant developments in future mining systems, technology and best practices are emerging that are driven by issues relating to human resources, competitiveness, environmental and social responsibility, within the dynamics of globalisation. It is proposed that the definition of the role and attributes of the mining engineer in the mine life cycle needs to be viewed more holistically in the face of increasingly more diverse and complex responsibilities. These developments are motivating the need to consider a fresh approach to mining education and training at all levels for industry. A growing diversity and complexity of professional responsibilities is extending the mining engineerÆs broadly based skill set and reinforcing the need to play a central role within increasingly interdisciplinary teams. On the other hand, the imminent new technologies that will transform the mining process are prompting the assumption that more focused and specialised skill sets will be needed. A way forward is suggested that would first define a blueprint for the future mine, as an attempt to characterise the systems architecture, processes and organisation of the next generation mine. This can be the basis for assessing the nature of the workforce and distribution of responsibilities, from which can be inferred the skills and training requirements. In the context of the mining engineer, the paper explores how understanding such future requirements will enable more proactive development of a strategy for educational development. The paper then concludes by considering issues and lessons learned from some recent mining educational development initiatives underway in Australia and Canada that are shaping significant change.

A stibnite concentrate from Golden Spec (WA) was subjected to a series of tests involving high pressure cyanidation and pressure oxidation followed by conventional cyanidation. The concentrate, whose gold content was 18.1 g/t, yielded only eight per cent of the gold when leached directly by a standard 24-hour cyanidation test. The recovery was increased to only 15 per cent when pressure cyanided under the following conditions: ambient temperature, 2000 kPa oxygen pressure, two hour retention time and 30 per cent w/w solids pulp density. This poor response to pressure cyanidation emphasised the refractoriness of the material. Evidence of the fine distribution of the gold through the concentrate, from measurements of the particle sizing distribution and the gold analyses of the individual fractions, also suggested that this concentrate was highly refractory. Pressure oxidation of the concentrate at elevated temperatures followed by cyanidation yielded recoveries as high as 94 per cent. However a preoxidation treatment under the following conditions was necessary: 230¦C, 2000 kPa oxygen pressure for a period of four hours.

The EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP) and the EPA Region VIII Superfund office are jointly conducting a field-scale technology demonstration of a two-step in situ treatment of the acidic Anchor Hill Pit lake at the Gilt Edge Mine Superfund site near Deadwood, South Dakota, USA. The project goal is to develop cost and performance data for the in situ treatment for potential application in long-term water treatment/management activities at the Gilt Edge site, and for potential application at other similar sites. Lime neutralisation of the pit using a Neutra-Mill was accomplished in the spring of 2001, with a resultant lime utilisation efficiency of about 71 per cent, and a typical throughput of about 1 tonne per hour using coarse, pebble quicklime and 1.4 tonnes per hour using finer, ground lime. Redox-mediated biotransformation treatment of the pit has been ongoing since May 2001. As of January 2003, denitrification is complete in the near-surface waters and about 90 per cent complete in the deeper waters. Bacterial sulfate reduction is expected to begin in the near future. This paper describes project activities, results, and lessons-learned to-date as well as future monitoring plans.

Continuous development of complex new steel grades to meet the ever-increasing demand of high performance causes recurrent issues in steel continuous casting such as surface quality defects (eg cracks, depressions, deep oscillation marks) and productivity challenges (eg faster casting, near-net shape casting). Continuous casting of steel is a highly successful metallurgical process. Much of this success can be attributed to the performance of the casting powder that is added to the top of the mould, creates a liquid slag pool as it is heated, and forms a slag film between the watercooled copper mould and steel shell during its passage down the mould. Mould powder selection is a compromise between the conflicting requirements of heat transfer and lubrication. In an EU RFCS (Research Fund for Coal and Steel)-funded project, various techniques are developed to offer the opportunity to adapt the slag film to meet the conflicting needs in different parts of the mould such that mild cooling can be generated in the meniscus, mid-broad face or corner areas whilst maintaining lubrication and offering higher cooling rates in other areas of mould. This has significant potential to address the industrial issues in product quality and productivity of continuous casting. This paper reports, as part of the EU RFCS project, the determination of crystallinity and porosity in slag films for casting challenging and innovative steel grades using new methods. In comparison with the methods such as X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis and optical microscopy / scanning electron microscopy (OM/SEM) analysis that are currently adopted by the industries, EBSD (electron backscatter diffraction) has been employed to determine the crystallinity of the slag films taken from industry casters. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) plus 3D image reconstruction has been used to determine the slag film % porosity with pore volume, pore size distribution, and pore location, which can be linked with the performance of the slag films during casting different steel grades.

In the last eight years inclined conveyor haulage systems have established themselves in the mainstream for hard rock underground mine haulage. This leaves the question; what else might be on the horizon for mine haulage and how do we address the process of selecting haulage systems for new mines? This paper considers the identification of viable haulage technologies for underground mines and explores an approach for assessing existing and potential technologies. The example of a large deep mine is considered here. The evaluation of existing haulage systems relies on precedence and the assessment of the system capacity to meet the haulage requirements envisaged for a particular mining project. The assessment of potential technologies for mine haulage relies on the capacity to deliver a viable production-scale system within the timeline envisaged for developing a mining project. The haulage technologies addressed in this paper include: shaft hoisting,conveyor haulage,truck haulage,vertical conveyors, andhydraulic hoisting. This paper does not consider rail haulage out of a mine. This is simply because Australian topography typically has insufficient relief to bring them into consideration. However, rail haulage is a widely used and effective haulage solution in situations where significant topographical relief is present. The assessment of haulage system capability focuses on the following fundamental questions: How reliable are they? What is the degree of technical risk in a business context?What levels of flexibility do they offer?How capital effective are they? What returns are indicated by the balance of capital and operating cost estimates?

The extensive literature on sulfide flotation indicates that pyrite poorly floats under alkaline condition. Xanthate concentration has a positive effect on pyrite flotation, but above a pH of 11, pyrite seems to be strongly depressed, independently of the concentration in xanthate. In this investigation, aeration and xanthate concentration effects were studied for pyrite flotation conditioned at pH 11 with lime. Results presented in this paper include surface infrared analyses and pulp chemistry measurements which have showed that aeration had a dual effect on pyrite flotation. It induced pyrite surface activation by oxygen, and oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric hydroxides or oxyhydroxides species. It also favoured dissolution of CO2, leading to calcium carbonate precipitation and adsorption onto pyrite surface. Both CO2 dissolution and ferrous oxidation generated protons and decreased pulp pH. Pyrite flotation was observed to be effective with a statistical monolayer of xanthate that could be adsorbed as mixture of dixanthogen and metal-xanthate complex. Non-floated fractions showed high amounts of carbonate, and presence of hydroxyl iron sulfate (Fen(OH)m(SO4)p, xH2O) which have inhibited the hydrophobicity effect of adsorbed xanthate. Environmental desulfurisation could be improved by aeration control causing pyrite oxidation and pH decrease to reach optimal flotation condition with a relatively low xanthate concentration.

The current talk of risk management as a separate discipline and management function is like earlier imposition of Quality Control (QC) as an overlay on shoddy production management. Risk management is vital, but is integral in the way we marshal our staff, make decisions, then monitor and review and make crucial secondary decisions. New leaders must not assume that hiring experts ensures good decisions. It is only the essential step one. The worst company I worked for had more expertise than the best. The difference was in culture and decision-making processes. Failed feasibility studies, persistent technical factions in a company that cancel each other, heaps of expert consultant reports piled up like a dump of bricks, even great but half-managers in large and small companies cancelling expertise at their disposal, are the worst manifestations. Just daily foul-ups are common even amongst smart people. We miners have made a great industry but are content to drift far below excellence, even where that word is bandied around. All the management literature and management courses will not right the situation û we have been sending budding managers to this good stuff for two generations and the effects are worthwhile but marginal. A few key ideals, ideas and slogans are not the way. These make inspiring books that work about as long as the Christmas spirit does in the real world. What we need is a coachesÆ manual and a standard of the essential package of culture and work processes that make excellence possible and show how to maintain it long term. It has not been written until now because most managers want to remain dilettante amateur managers without the discipline that creates excellence. First, believe excellence is possible and worth any effort; then commit to it.

Coal mining in the Bulli seam in the Southern Coalfield in New South Wales has experienced the dangers of outbursts of coal and gas. These incidents present a major risk to the safety of mine workers and consequently a threat to the overall viability of the mining operations. Since the occurrence of a major outburst incident in the South Bulli Colliery in 1991 involving three fatalities, the primary contributory factors associated with coal/gas outbursts in the Bulli coal seam have been identified and a strategy for the management of the outburst risk has been formulated by the cooperation of mine operators, mine workers and the Department of Mineral Resources. Utilisation of risk management techniques in combination with modern gas drainage technologies and geological control methods have led to the formation of this effective outburst management plan. Clause 15 of the Coal Mines (Underground) Regulation 1999 in NSW has made it mandatory in an area of outburst to carry out mining in accordance with a code or guidelines developed for mining in outburst prone areas (DMR, 1999). In this paper an outburst management system is discussed which was developed for collieries in the Southern Coalfield that brings together all the available information including past experiences and risk management techniques in a documented form in order to maximise safety of mine workers. It is concluded that since the introduction of the outburst risk management systems in the Southern Coalfield in 1994 considerable reduction in outburst incidences have been experienced.

This paper deals with two separate case studies investigating the froth phase performance and characterisation of two industrial rougher/ scavenger flotation circuits. Froth phase performance was quantified using a mass balance approach to estimate froth zone recovery. Measured characteristics of the froth phase included frother solution concentration determined by gas chromatography, and the time taken for an equilibrium froth sample to decay to one-half of its original froth height. The latter measurement is referred to as the æfroth half-lifeÆ and is strongly linked to froth stability. Special methods and techniques developed to preserve frother in solution and to measure froth half-life are briefly described. The frother type in the first case study was a mixture of straight and branched alcohols, whilst the frother type in the second case study was a mixture of alcohols, aldehydes and triethoxybutane. The first case study focussed on a flotation circuit treating a low-grade ore containing only a small fraction of floatable copper sulfide minerals, while the second case study focussed on a flotation circuit treating a higher grade complex sulfide ore containing significant quantities of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite and pyrite. It was found that froth zone recovery of valuable mineral generally decreased down-the-bank of the two industrial rougher/scavenger circuits. Moreover, decreases in froth zone recovery significantly limit the overall cell recovery of valuable mineral achievable from the plant scavenger cells. However, the decrease in froth zone recovery could not be linked to the removal of frother from the pulp solution to the concentrate product in the preceding rougher flotation stages. Measurements of residual frother in solution suggested that, approximately, only five to ten per cent of the added frother was removed into the rougher/scavenger concentrate, with the remainder appearing in the scavenger tailings. This finding suggested there was apparently adequate frother in solution in the scavenger stages.

This paper provides a brief fundamental insight regarding the fabric media concept for liquor filtration. The subject matter will be of interest to metallurgists and engineers with professional responsibility for world class design of solid liquid separation processes and efficient lowest cost operation of existing mineral process plant. Avocet Mining commissioned the worldÆs first mineral liquor clarification process incorporating a fabric media liquor filter at their Lanut gold mine in Sulawesi, in 2004 with design consulting provided by the Australian company SLS Technology Pty Ltd. Development of the technology continues with applied research focused on selecting textile parameters to apply filtration to a wider range of particle and contaminant types, higher solids concentrations, and different process liquors. Liquor filtration with the Fabric Media technology offers an array of attractive benefits. For Avocet Mining, filtration of pregnant liquor directly from the heap leach pad has enabled removal of the sediment pond and sand filters from the traditional process flow sheet, thus providing significant cost and installation time savings. Avocet Mining has recently expressed confidence in the technology indicating selection preference of the technology for the expansion at Lanut and for a new project. The application design window for the Fabric Media concept is extremely flexible with the technology now successfully applied to many different liquor chemistries and application objectives around the world. Potential cost savings for solid liquid separation process plant, such as counter current decantation circuits, clarifier vessels and thickener tanks can be calculated from laboratory measurements or pilot plant demonstrations.

Looking back 25 years, the role of the drill and blast engineer in an Australian mine seemed relatively simple, with the primary focal points being scheduling of the drill rigs, oversize control, and budget control with respect to consumption of both explosives and drill consumables. The choice of explosive selection was relatively simple, though many mines were becoming involved in trials of slurry explosives, emulsion blends, and low density ANFO blends. Guidelines to assist the engineer towards specific fragmentation targets were scarce, environmental constraints were light, and computers were rarely found on the desks of any mining engineers. Wall control blasting was in its infancy, with the bulk of attention being given to appropriate slope design and little real attention given to factors such as explosive distribution, and optimum delay timing and sequencing. Quantitative measurement of blasting performance was rare. The science of blasting, for fragmentation control, wall control, and environmental impact control was about to be born, and was heralded in those years by intense efforts by the explosive manufacturers and a proliferation of research centres throughout the world. Since the early 1980s, the role of the Australian drill and blast engineer has gone through a major metamorphosis, and currently requires a greater depth of scientific understanding than any other specialisation within mining engineering.

Anoxic limestone drains (ALDs) have been widely used in the passive treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD), but their effectiveness has often been less than anticipated. Iron hydroxide often precipitates around limestone particles and inhibits neutralisation. To determine the conditions under which iron hydroxide precipitates, a small-scale laboratory ALD system was built to enable a detailed examination of the chemistry of iron within the drain. For one experiment, a mixture of limestone and quartz was introduced to the drain to assist in the determination of the key mechanism governing iron precipitation. Synthetic anaerobic acid mine drainage containing Fe2+ (~130 ppm), SO4 2- and H+ was pumped at a rate of 30 mL/min up a 90 cm tall, 15 cm diameter vertical column filled with limestone gravel of 98 per cent purity. Three sampling ports were fitted at equal intervals along the column; water was periodically extracted for analysis at the sampling ports over an 11-hour period. Experiments were run at influent pH levels of 2 and 4. Results show that acid neutralisation to pH greater than 6 occurred at the inflow end of the drain. The greatest amount of iron precipitation (19.5 per cent) also occurred in this area. The lack of iron precipitation on the quartz surfaces in the quartz/limestone mixture indicates that neutralisation is the key mechanism for the precipitation of iron hydroxide on limestone particles. A pe-pH stability diagram derived for the laboratory ALD system indicates that ALDs will not be effective for AMD with pH 2. Influent waters with pH 2 require a pe of -2 (Eh: -118.4 mV) to avoid Fe precipitation upon neutralisation. Influent waters of pH 4 require a pe between -2 and -4.

In general the iron ore industry has been slow to adopt the Whittle Pit optimising software in the evaluation of iron ore deposits. The reasons for this are two-fold:the iron ore industry has developed techniques, usually bespoke software residing in the corporate offices of the respective iron ore companies, to establish their final pit limits; and the fact that the Whittle software doesnÆt easily lend itself to estimating a sales product of constant quality without maximising grade (metal content). The Whittle software is based on the work done by Lerch and Grossman (in the early 1970s), which proposed that graph theory be used to establish an optimal surface that maximises the revenue from a deposit. The maximised surface created in the pit optimiser is translated into a proposed optimal final pit shape that can be used by the mine design engineers as a target outline to lay out the final practical pit. By treating a geological and ore resources model that was created for an iron ore deposit as a subset of the recoverable resources estimation (RRE) type of geological models, the evaluation of an iron ore deposit and establishing the final pit is greatly simplified in the Whittle 4-X optimiser. Instead of trying to optimise the iron content of the deposit, the emphasis swings to maximising the extraction of a finished and saleable iron ore product. This is achieved by treating the finished saleable iron ore as an element in the multi-element Whittle optimiser. The quality of the finished sales product is represented, and the material that cannot be used in the blended product is also shown. Proposals for enhancing the functionality in the Whittle 4-X optimiser to make the evaluation of iron (and coal) deposits easier includes the creation of a new reporting function that will allow the user to specify which field(s) can be used as the divisor(s) for the reporting of the element grades in the model.

The Porgera gold project is now in its seventh year of operation as one of the world's prime gold mining projects in one of the most underdeveloped and remote regions of the world. The unique gold deposit was development in stages to its present size of operation with an underground mine of 2000tpd, an open pit operation moving 210,000tpd and a complex metallurgical plant treating an average of 16,500tpd of ore. During the past years the operation had to address an array of issues relating to the "development" of the region and this is still ongoing. Development means different things to different people and though the parties that signed the different agreements relating to the Mining Development Contract were aware of this, none has real- ised the extent to which this is true. The developing company (a joint venture between Placer Pacific as the Manager, Goldfields Porgera, Highlands Gold and the Government of PNG), provided funds for risky exploration and the capital for development of the project. Its shareholders ex- pect an economic and viable mine operation from the deposit to ensure them returns on their investment. The local people gave up their land, their isolated way of living and accepted to be out of their comfort zone for some time in anticipation of a better lifestyle and economic benefits in support of that lifestyle. The PNG Government has a leg in both camps and expects both outcomes at the same time. The Government is also the regulator and expects compliance on top of that. If development in general is to be successful, all parties must substantially satisfy all expectations. It is evident that the outcome of some elements of development are reasonably defined (i.e. develop a viable mine to exploit the deposit), whilst other elements are moving targets (i.e. a better lifestyle). The seeds for conflict are thus abundantly present and to resolve them requires the will of all parties in all areas to come to a solution. This path to problem solving is many times torturous as each party comes from a different culture and background and has a different understanding of the parameters in the equation.

Of the various copper sulfides in the EarthÆs crust, chalcopyrite is by far the most common. This mineral is also the most difficult to leach, with hydrometallurgical extraction processes characterised by prohibitively slow kinetics. While a number of processes, including leaching at atmospheric pressure and temperature, pressure leaching at higher temperature, and bioleaching of concentrates in stirred tanks and whole ores in heaps have been demonstrated to some extent, there is currently no full-scale unit process for the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper from chalcopyrite ores. Titan Resources NL operated a test bacterial heap leach at Radio Hill, Western Australia in 2001, to extract nickel and copper from a mixed sulfide ore that contained significant amounts of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. A proprietary mixed bacterial culture was used to inoculate the heap, and the nickel and copper were precipitated from the resultant solution as mixed hydroxides. Although 65 per cent of the copper from the Radio Hill heap was eventually recovered, the rate of extraction followed an unexpected trend, as the initial rates of copper recovery were much slower than column tests had suggested. It was postulated that this was due to dissolved copper precipitating as covellite or chalcocite in the most poorly aerated zones within the heap, ie furthest from the aeration pipes at the base. It was further hypothesised that the lack of oxidants (oxygen, ferric iron) and the likely inactivity of bacteria in these areas limited the re-dissolution of such secondary copper precipitates. In this study the above hypothesis was tested in column experiments using the same mixed sulfide ore and a synthetic leach solution. One set of columns was aerated and another set was operated without aeration. Results showed that precipitation of copper occurred regardless of whether the column was aerated or not. The results suggested that pH of the leach solution played a significant part in the precipitation of the copper. Further column tests revealed this to be the case. These results are described here in detail.

A blast is designed to completely break competent rock such that it can be economically extracted, and efficiently handled or processed. Efficient breakage of the rock is critical to the success of an operation, and in many operations blast design is optimised to achieve fragmentation, muckpile profiles, and material that is easily excavated. There are inevitably other issues, such as damage to adjacent rock, that should be taken into account when designing a blast to achieve overall optimisation. Some of the key issues with respect to the integrity of the in situ materials adjacent to a blast are identified and briefly discussed in this paper. The potential for damage and the effects of a blast will be strongly influenced by the rock mass properties. This makes it important that site specific conditions and their response to blasting are known. Practical techniques that allow the disturbance adjacent to a blast to be measured with minimum disturbance to operations are described in the paper. Experience shows that, during the blasting process, there is considerable potential to disturb the in situ rock mass adjacent to the blast. In some circumstances a very important objective must be to minimise disturbance outside of the immediate blast area. Measured and observed disturbances caused by blasting to adjacent rock, for various common types of blasting, are discussed in this paper. Blast induced disturbances to the rock mass have been observed in both the near and far fields. These disturbances have the potential to impact on geotechnical design. The geotechnical significance of blast disturbance on a rock mass that is to remain in situ is explored and suggestions with respect to design are given.

The conventional ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) loader utilises a pneumatic system to control the flow of ANFO (via rotary actuator/ball valve) and air (via an auxiliary air valve). This system, though relatively simple and reliable, has several drawbacks with respect to ease of control and level of automation. In this paper, a radio frequency (RF) remote control for explosives charging is discussed. The system design incorporates electric solenoid valves to control the rotary actuator and the auxiliary air valve. All operations associated with explosives charging are selectable at the remote and are completed according to a modifiable time sequence. This allows the following charging sequence to be reduced to a single momentary application of the remote:removal of water from the hole prior to charging with ANFO; charging of the hole for a preset but adjustable period of time; and removal of the remaining ANFO from the ANFO hose. A specially developed remote switch allows the operator to maintain two-handed control of the ANFO hose whilst achieving full control of the charge-up process. Failsafe electronic architecture is incorporated into the systemÆs design to increase safety to the highest level. Should the RF remote control fail, a wired remote is included in the system to allow for the charging process to continue, albeit at a reduced level of control. The application of the RF remote control system in an underground explosives charging operation minimises and/or eliminates many problems associated with the use of the conventional charging system. These include: the wet-hole problem, trip and entanglement hazards, air embolism and the two-man loader control requirement. The developed remote control unit proved to be effective at removing water from wet holes leading to increased face advance per drilling operation. It proved to be economically feasible, allowed for an increase in systemÆs dependability and safety factor and for a truly one-man operation which resulted in reduced manpower.

Performance driver trees or KPI trees are reasonably well-known tools for analysing performance in mining operations. However, the tools are often not user friendly. They may be technically correct but they are often clunky. This means they donÆt promote simple management decision-making and donÆt encourage businesses to make them an integrated part of optimising their operations. This paper describes a simple but effective driver tree process and tool that has been successfully implemented and used to aid decision making across a number of mining and processing operations. The important aspects of employing driver trees to assist in management of operations are to ensure that the chosen solution:includes a reporting solution, provides the bottom line impact of the performance indicators, automatically gathers the necessary data that reconciles with existing reports, and is built around a review process that fits with existing management processes. An adequate solution enables operators to identify where there are performance gaps and to quickly prioritise the urgency for addressing these issues. Two case studies are chosen to illustrate the critical success factors of implementing a performance driver tree solution. The first is a large, complex open pit operation. The driver trees, reporting and management processes were initially established for the mining and processing aspects of the operations. Once the initial solution was bedded down, a follow-up project was carried out to establish the equivalent solution for the support areas of the business. The final solution covered stand alone performance driver trees for mining, processing, engineering, maintenance, health and safety, human resources and finance. These individual driver trees were integrated into a total solution that showed how all of the identified KPIÆs impact profit and quantified the dollar impact of all variations. The reporting solution that was put in place automatically creates prioritised lists of variances for the business to address. The second case study is a performance diagnostic project where driver trees were used to assess where gaps in performance were occurring, and then to evaluate the impacts of proposed initiatives.
