Rotary kilns have been in service in the gold industry to regenerate carbon for 65 years. At the time oxide ores with gold head grades of 8 to 10 g/t were being treated. Carbon could be regenerated adequately at 650°C and solution losses were less than 1%. Forty years ago, research indicated that heavily fouled carbon from flotation circuits had to be held at 750 to 850°C for ten to twenty minutes for full reactivation (Avraamides and La Brooy, 1987), gold head grades were typically 5 g/t and solution losses typically 0.02 ppm – still less than 1%. In 2017 it was determined (Claflin et al., 2017) that a residence time of less than 1 minute at 750°C can be adequate to reactivate carbon fouled with organics sufficiently to achieve 0.005 ppm solution losses in a flotation tailings leach plant.With the potential for discovery head grades to drop below 0.6 g/t, solution losses of 0.02 ppm represent over 3% loss. Tight operation of the whole carbon circuit is required to keep gold solution losses below 1% going forward.There are alternatives to a rotary carbon kiln, e.g. vertical kilns of which the Minfurn, Rintoul and Combustion Air kilns are examples. The alternative kilns can be heated using electrical heating elements, induction, and microwave. These kilns can operate successfully under the right conditions, however, they are almost exclusively for small carbon throughputs and are not suitable for the large carbon advance rates that are required to process low head grade ore deposits. Large throughput carbon kilns are are almost exclusively fossil fuel fired rotary kilns and the subject of this paper. In the view of the principal author, a fossil fuel fired vertical carbon kiln is preferred to a rotary kiln, however, it is not currently used in the industry.Thermal regeneration of activated carbon has a major impact on gold recovery in the carbon circuit. The carbon kiln and associated equipment constitute 3 to 5% of the capital cost for an oxide processing plant and up to 10% of the capital cost if flotation tails are leached. Despite the capital cost and impact on recovery, the carbon kiln is often poorly selected, operated and maintained.Six years ago Ausenco embarked on the Carbon Kiln Initiative to reduce solution gold losses. This body of knowledge has been published in a series of papers culminating in this paper on how to:1. Select a kiln appropriate for the flowsheet;2. There are numerous individual gold deposits in the Archaean greenstone belts of Western Australia, but only 26 have productions and/or quoted reserves in excess of 10 tonnes Au. Most gold production has come from mineralization in shear zones, quartz veins or stockworks in volcanic or intrusive host rocks, particularly tholeiitic basalts or dolerites metamorphosed at sub-amphibolite facies (e.g. Kalgoorlie). Significant prod- uction has also come from BIF-hosted deposits (e.g. Hill 50), and large reserves are quoted for mafic hosts at high metamorphic grade (e.g. Big Bell). Most deposits have marked structural control, great depth extension, and are characterized by zoned alteration haloes of pyritization (with Au), K-metasomatism and carbonation. On the regional scale, most larger volcanic- or intrusive-hosted deposits occur in younger (ca 2.8 b.y.) rift-phase green- stones (Norseman-Wiluna Belt). These belts also have a high prospectivity (36 kg Au/km2 of greenstone belt). Younger (ca 3.0 b.y.) and older (ca 3.5 b.y.) platform-phase green stones of the Murchison and Sodthern Cross Provinces and the east Pilbara, respectively, are progressively less prospective (14 kg Au/km2 and 0.8 kg Au/km2, respectively) and also have progressively smaller deposits. The important regional- and local-scale characteristics of most gold deposits can be explained in terms of a metamorphic- replacement model. In this model, metamorphic H2O-CO2 fluids, focussed by faults and shear zones, infiltrated host rocks and deposit gold at 350 + 50¦C and 1-2 kb, largely in response to fluid-wallrock interaction. In many large deposits, gold precipitation was synchronous with sulphidation of Fe-rich host rocks, but the diversity and abundance of smaller deposits reflects the variety of reactions precipitating gold from ubiquitous, auriferous metamorphic fluids. Regional variations in abundance and size of deposits relate to factors such as tectonic setting, alteration styles and possibly source rocks.

Computer-controlled microscopes with digital image acquisition and analysis led to the creation of the new field of digital microscopy. These techniques not only allow a certain degree of automation but have also brought new possibilities to microstructural characterisation. One of these new and promising possibilities is co-site microscopy, which links different kinds of information obtained from different microscopy techniques. The present work presents the development and implementation of a co-site microscopy methodology that combines images obtained by reflected light microscopy (RLM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This methodology can improve the SEM analytical capacity by adding colour information from RLM. It involves the whole sequence, from image acquisition at the microscopes to the analysis of the phases using pattern recognition techniques. An automatic registration procedure for the two kinds of images was developed, allowing the adjustment of magnification, translation, rotation and pixel size, and the correction of local distortions. Thus, the images from RLM and SEM can be combined to build a multidimensional data set of each field, which can then be used in a pattern recognition approach to discriminate different phases. The methodology was tested with a copper ore sample, aiming at the discrimination of minerals that are not distinguishable with either RLM or SEM.

This paper discusses the social and economic impact of mining, and in particular goldmining, on New Zealand. The range of topics covered and their complexity has confined us in this paper to highlighting the main points of concern û a detailed report is under preparation. A major problem in undertaking this study was the lack of hard data on important environmental, economic and social issues and if there is to be effective planning in the area of natural resource use this situation must be rectified. The following conclusions were drawn: Goldmining was very important in shaping New Zealand's early social and economic development, providing wealth, employment and impetus for social change.Foreign investment and technology has been an essential element in New ZealandÆs economic development.Mining is a small industry at present by this must not be allowed to obscure its potential to broaden New Zealand's economic base and provide foreign exchange.With modern methods, development of mineral resources and environmental protection are not incompatible but certain unique and irreplaceable areas must be preserved.There are problems in evaluating mining and other projects because different groups hold different values, and arguments often hinge on the valuation of costs and benefits rather than the technical aspects of the analysis.Mineral exploration is a high risk business and the potential returns must be sufficient to attract capital if New Zealand's mineral resources are to be developed.A resurgence of goldmining will clearly have obvious benefits for Waihi but the local community must plan carefully for their future. New Zealand will also gain valuable foreign exchange required for higher levels of economic activity.

For its Hellyer project, Aberfoyle sought to establish a high degree of confidence in all aspects of the feasibility study. Accurate capital and operating cost estimates were an integral and essential part of the study. They were crucial to the evaluation of investment returns and competitive cost position. Both the capital and operating cost estimates were based on the comprehensive data available from exploratory mine development, pilot plant operation, detailed engineering design, and Aberfoyle's experience in the area. One of the principal project objectives was to maximise operating productivity and efficiencies and this created capital cost alternatives which needed thorough cost-benefit assessment. The estimated capital cost for construction and development was $90 million, and the project was completed virtually on time for $80 million. The first year's experience indicated that operating costs would settle to well within 10% of the estimates.

The hematite deposits of Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF) are hosted by the Proterozoic itabirites of the Itabira iron formation (Harder and Chamberlin, 1915). These deposits are widely distributed at QF and include the hard hematite ore bodies. However, considerable variations in ore structure and texture can be observed. A preserved banding and lamination in the thin bedded, compact hematite ore, apparently reflects the original layering and/or the prominent foliation of the partly or completely replaced itabirite. The structure of the hematite ore deposits varies from almond shaped, rootless, to bedded bodies, both concordant with the main foliation, and to mesoscopic veins and irregular bodies. Hematite ore textures, which depends on the structural characteristics of the deposit, may be grouped into four main types:thin bedded, laminated and banded; micaceous, foliated and schistose; brecciated; and compact/massive. Thin bedded ores occur in the western, central and subordinately eastern portions of QF, while submicaceous, micaceous and schistose ores are predominant at the eastern part. Brecciated ores exist mainly at the western part and subordinately in central QF. Structureless, compact hematite ores may be either related to the brecciated hematite or occur as isolated bodies at central QF. It is suggested that a synkinematic, acid and oxidant, metasomatism during metamorphism, under a ductile regime, was responsible for the hard hematite ores of the types 1 and 2, and a static, subsequent, hydrothermal, regional metasomatism, under brittle regime resulted in the formation of the types 3 and 4. The common texture present in the all ores is the ubiquitous magnetite porphyroclasts replacement by hematite. Quartz and other silicate minerals are also substituted by hematite. Muscovite, tourmaline, talc, chlorite, apatite and kaolinite have been recognised in the hard hematitic ores. Apparently that mineral association denotes different equilibrium conditions of formation.

The regional syndeformational metamorphism affecting the Itabira Iron Formation (IIF) at Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF) was formerly discussed by Dorr (1965), who proposed that quartz grain size could monitor the metamorphism, according to James (1955), and that the formation of haematite could be the result of the synchronous metasomatic process. Herz (1979) suggested the existence of three metamorphic zones, not mentioning the haematite formation. It could be observed that the primary oxide phase in the IIF is magnetite and most of the hard haematite was derived from the metamorphic replacement of magnetite, forming micaceous or schistose haematite. Differently from most iron formations in the world, the formation of haematite deposits at QF occurred under high oxygen fugacity during metamorphism. The haematite microlaths display a strong preferred orientation, which determines the alongated shapes of the fragments. The terms foliated and unfoliated haematite have been applied by Dorr to the micaceous or schistose haematite, and to the isotropic, hydrothermally derived haematite. Under the microcope, the haematite exhibits a strong crystallographic or lattice orientation encircling the magnetite and martite porphyroclasts. The strain rate determined and defined the textural variation, size and economic importance of the deposits and the ore grade. Metamorphism at QF increases eastward and resulted in the formation of a gruneritic Fe-Mg amphibole, at the western portion, followed by a cummingtonitic amphibole at the central-western part, succeeded by the actinolite zone at the central-eastern part, and finally to the tremolite-anthophyllite zone to the east. These zones, arranged in a north-south pattern, can be followed in the pelitic units, whereas appear sericite-chlorite, kyanite-chloritoid and garnet-staurolite respectively. Carbonate geothermometry in IIF also may support the metamorphic variations. At the western zone the haematite forms small lenses within the itabirite, P-contents are slightly higher than in the remaining IIF, haematite grain size is minute, resulting in a submicaceous texture and the amount and dimension of relict magnetite within haematite is greater than in the other parts of QF. Jangada and Serra Azul deposits are examples of this zone. The central-western zone is characterised by significant haematite deposits, in considerable quantity and size, haematite grain size increased, in order to produce a micaceous texture, the P-contents and the amount of magnetite decreased. Pico do Itabirito, Cappo Xavier, Capitpo do Mato and Tamanduß correspond to the deposit type of this zone. At the eastern-central portion the amount of the hard haematite deposits decreases, increasing the soft haematite ore due to higher strain rates. However, it can be perceived that the relict magnetite almost disappeared and the haematite grain size became coarser than the haematite from the western zones. At the eastern zone, the haematite deposits exhibit typical schistose texture, the magnetite porphyroclasts are absent and the lowest P-grades in the haematitic iron formation. The haematite bodies characteristic from this zone are Andrade, Morro Agudo and the deposits at the Itabira District. The hydrothermally derived compact and isotropic haematite deposits, formed subsequently to the micaceous haematite bodies, were generated after deformation ceased, but under very high fluid pressure. The metamorphic reactions magnetite + quartz + H2O = grunerite + haematite and magnetite + quartz + H2O = grunerite + O2 were decisive in the formation of the metamorphic haematite deposits.

A gold mine in north-eastern Africa has expanded throughput from 5 to 10 Mt/y in recent years. The original carbon regeneration kiln was incapable of achieving required throughput or meeting process conditions to reactivate the carbon due to heavy fouling by high molecular weight frothers and collectors. A new high temperature kiln was required.The design criteria for the carbon reactivation kiln and associated equipment were revised, then implemented in close cooperation with a kiln vender who had previously supplied kilns operating successfully on highly fouled carbon. The result is a whole facility, holistically designed to achieve the technical criteria.The new carbon reactivation facility has been operating since 1 July 2014. What have we learned? What has performed to expectations? What could be done better?This paper presents lessons learnt regarding the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of the Ausenco Carbon Reactivation Kiln. ‘Lessons’ are associated with threats and opportunities (risks) that have that have been realised. Current trends into mining iron ore have seen an increase in the exploitation of problematic orebodies that would typically be disregarded. These bulk materials cause problems within all facets of the material handling stream, from remains left in train wagons to transfer chute blockages, which can cause costly downtime to mining operations (Roberts, 1998). These problematic bulk materials are referred to as wet and sticky material (WSM) due to the adhesive and cohesive nature they possess. Their characteristics can be computationally expensive to model. With the development of discrete element modelling (DEM), in conjunction with advancement in computational power over the past decade, it is now more feasible to model WSMs into the DEM technique.This research will couple two different contact models that can represent the characteristics of a WSM. These models include the Simplified Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (SJKR) and the Easo liquid bridging contact models. The SJKR contact model is an expanded form of the classic Hertz model. This model includes the tensile forces that are in the contact zone between two bodies when they are separated, which the Hertz model failed to capture (Johnson, Kendall and Roberts, 1971). The Easo liquid bridging contact model accounts for the capillary effects and surface tension that will form between two bodies, such as that of a WSM (Soulié et al, 2006). Both of these models were coupled to give the best representation of a WSM, which was simulated using MoleculeX™ (Chen and Williams, 2017) as the software platform.Additionally, this research also investigated the adhesion of problematic iron ore samples onto impact plates under dynamic conditions. An experimental set-up consisting of an apron feeder and inclined impact plate was utilised, to gain an understanding of the way the material builds-up and the possible modes of failure that could be experienced. This was undertaken for different wall liner materials, wall liner angles and moisture contents of the iron ore samples. From this, a series of DEM calibration simulations were conducted on the experimental set-up and particle size distributions (PSD) of the iron ore samples. About twelve months ago, owing to the increasing quantity of stone and dirt being drawn frQm the Victorian State Coal Mine due to the large amount of dead work below ground, cutting, faults, etc, and to the increasing quan#ty of banded coal beingworked, the writer was forced to consider the question of economy in handling the spoil at the surface. The method in operation at the time was to run out level dumps fro,m the, tipping floor of the heapstead, or brace, and to tip most of the skips of stone in tipplers at the ends of the dumps, the remainder of the skips being side-tipped to widen the dumps.The method, whilst quite satisfactory for dealing with a few skips of stone, was found to be costly as the dumps extended, and the number of skips to be dealt with increased from 300. to 400 per day of two shifts;. therefore, in order to expedite thework and cheapen its cost, the writer devised an improved method which may be qescribed as follows :-(1) The stone is tipped into a hopper car which holds about 10 skips(2) The hopper car is hauled up an inclined dump by means of an electric winch.(3) The spoil is dumped from the car forwards or to either side, as required.(4) The car is returned to the starting point for a further load.Plate I Fig. 1 gives an idea of the construction of the hopper car. The development of a water accounting framework that enables consistent and contextual reporting of minerals operationsÆ water use, represents a key sustainable development objective that many Australian minerals companies have committed to. A future water accounting framework will require: key terms and definitions for water metrics for use in the Australian minerals industry that are consistent with the wider water sector, a suite of metrics representing key components of an operationÆs water balance, a calculation method for some of the metrics, and a reporting protocol. This paper presents the methodology that was used to derive these four components. Existing accounting frameworks were reviewed and key terms and definitions that were consistent with current regulatory requirements and voluntary approaches were proposed. A calculation methodology was developed to obtain some of the key indicators and variables that cannot be easily measured directly (eg water loss through evaporation). The adopted terms and definitions typically require a combination of empirical and estimated data. To test the proposed definitions and calculation methodology, values for water metrics were derived for eight sites, selected to test a variety of commodity and biophysical situations. The proposed framework and definitions could deal with the specific situations selected as case studies. The associated calculation methodology produced complete accounts at various levels. Some elements of the accounts could be directly checked against available data and simulations. The framework captured well variations in the reuse efficiencies; reuse efficiency could even vary for similar processes. It is concluded that this preliminary accounting framework provides a consistent language and metrics for quantifying and communicating water management, both at the intersection of the site with the surrounding landscape (through detailed reporting of site inputs and outputs) and within operational activities. Using this consistent framework for quantifying and documenting water use within an operation will provide a platform for compiling and comparing minerals industry water use with other sectors. This may support benchmarking activities within regions or companies and help demonstrate leadership amongst water users in water resource stewardship. The approach presented here is applicable to a wide variety of mining and processing activities, and biophysical environments, and following a period of stakeholder engagement and third party review, is being refined as a first step towards developing nationally consistent water use reporting for the Australian minerals industry.

This study of the tin-tungsten ore of the Shepherd and Murphy Mine, in central northern Tasmania, was originally undertaken at the request of the Moina Tungsten-Tin Mining Co., N.L., as part of the research programme of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of the C.S.I.R.O. It is based on the examination of a suite of specimens supplied by the management, supplemented by a more extensive collection and observations made by the author during a short visit to the mine in October, 1956.The Shepherd and Murphy Mine is at Moina, 36 miles S.W. of Devonport and 22 miles from Sheffield, the nearest railway station. It was worked almost· continuously from 1893 to 1919, when a fire destroyed the mill; to that date it had produced concentrates to the value of £141,000. After a long period of idleness, the mine was re-opened by the present company, but it has been announced recently that unfavourable market conditions have again forced closure.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe mine is on a deeply dissected plateau, about 2,500 ft. above sea level; it lies between the Iris and the Forth Rivers, whose valleys are deep gorges cut to about 400 to 600 ft. above sea level. From Moina westwards to the Iris River, a limestone regarded as part of the Gordon River Group, of Ordovician age, conformably overlies a sandstone containing tubicolar casts which are circular in cross section, half an inch in diameter and up to two feet long, and which resemble marine worm burrows (Elliston, 1953).

The paper discusses assay methods generally used when prospecting for gold, and also the applicability of various chemical methods, it describes a new paper chromatographic technique.for making fairly rapid semi-quantitative assays for very fine gold. Testing of the method in field work shows that this simple method could have applications in geologic work, in prospecting and in certain routine mine sampling work. It is not yet a method that can be used to detect anomalies in traces of gold dispersed around an orebody, as is general practice in geochemical prospecting.INTRODUCTIONAccording to the English economist Harrod (1958), "the acute shortage of gold in the world-because currency value has not been adjusted in line with the fall in the goods value of the various currencies-has been a familiar fact for some time now". Harrod calculates that a rise in the price of gold to double its present value is necessary to rectify this condition, and that, if this rise were to take place, increase in production and reduction in private hoarding might well bring annual accretion to world stocks from the presentaverage of about $464 million to a figure close to the $2,000 million that would probably eiiminate these shortages.Any increase in the price of gold is bound to lead to a great increase in prospecting at working mines, in abandoned areas and possibly in untouched country. Prospecting, techniques for base metal orebodies have improved greatly in the last thirty years; but methods available to detect gold occurring without accessory metals have not received the same attention. This paper presents the near-field rock damage owing to production blasting in limestone quarry in the western region of Japan. The study's purpose is to learn the mechanism of crack development due to blast vibration. In this study, blast vibration's magnitude was expressed with peak particle velocity (PPV) which was obtained based on seismographs recorded database. In attempt to pursue a research's purpose of this study, there were two considerable interests: near-field blast vibration propagation and prediction, and crack observed and prediction. Furthermore, with regards to considerable interest of the study, there were three essential aspects which were challenged, such as: monitoring and interpretation of seismic wave propagation in a rock mass near large explosive charge of production blast scale, measurement of blast rock damage in adjacent to blasthole, and determine critical value of PPV which may produce significant rock damage. In order to determine precision critical PPV, understanding correlation between rock damage with vibration level is firstly important to be done. This paper also discusses how to measure, detect and quantify near-field blast vibration and blast rock damage in adjacent to blasthole.

For the purposes of this discussion it is assumed that contributors should express the thoughts that arise from their personal experience. So wide is the range of mineral deposits, and so varied the methods employed in their discovery and development, that no two geologists are likely to have been impressed with the same applications of their science. The author's own personal experience has been, during recent years at least, very largely concerned with the broader aspects of the employment of scientific method and geological knowledge to the problems of exploration and exploitation, for the guidance of the general public and governmental authority rather than of mine executives and directors. The view-point thus reached is likely to differ in many respects from that of men who are much more intimately concerned with the mining problems of a single metal or a single mining field, and for this reason a statement may perhaps supplement those from others whose experience has been markedly different.It may well happen that, at some not distant date in the future, when systematic and comprehensive instruction in economic geology is embodied in the courses- prescribed for mining engineers during their years of training, the author's comments will be quitesuperfluous; but at the present time they appear to him to call for expression.The Need for Training of Mining Men in Economic Geology.Contact over a period of many years with mining men who have had different kinds of training and experience has been convincing that there is a general reluctance to acquire a full rational understanding of the geological factors involved in exploratory and developmental problems. BHP Billiton iron ore geoscience and exploration has embedded infrared spectroscopic sensing of drill hole samples to help meet this challenge.Infrared spectroscopy is delivering mineral predictions that are used for (automated) geology logging and modelling. The spectra are processed together with other available data sets to predict geometallurgical and geotechnical variables that include lump per cent and uniaxial compressive strength.Trials are ongoing to test the benefit of infrared spectroscopy during mining, including the analysis of grade control samples and remote sensing of mine faces. Results show great benefits in the fields of short-term geology modelling, better understanding of material (handling) properties, identification of geotechnical risk areas and high resolution ore-waste delineation.These trials are bringing BHP Billiton iron ore closer to its ultimate goal of having infrared spectroscopic data collected across the mining value chain. Once such data are available everywhere, regression models can be trained at one point (eg iron grade model trained on exploration samples) and be applied elsewhere (eg iron grade predicted on mine faces). Such predictive analytics will enable not only high precision mining, but also provide maximum time to tailor plant design to the ore in the ground, based on learnings from ores processed in other plants. This paper is a collection of thoughts and frameworks. It addresses a simple question: æIf we are to believe the large number of people and institutions indicating that humans are destroying the Earth and that the end is nigh, why do we bother trying to be sustainable?Æ The paper lays out evidence for the existence of multiple hazards to global society. The existence of a hazard alone is insufficient to make an assessment of risk. Risk estimates are required to support decision-making. An approach to assessing risk is provided and some limited data are presented. A new ædefinitionÆ or statement of what sustainability (in a broad sense) might have become is then given. A decision framework for guiding decision- making about the risks is developed. This framework includes a definition of leadership with inherent implications for what determines whether a leadership position by title is actually leading. The paper concludes by offering a view of minerals industry sustainability and considerations around maturity in the current economic situation. It is hoped that by placing this collection of frameworks around sustainability, a supporting structure emerges that will facilitate action. It is proposed that action taken in this way will be more effective than reaction to regulation or even social license to operate imperatives because it is driven by a more holistic view of the challenges and the potential roles of individuals û all of whom are potential leaders at some scale of action.
