In previous discussions on stresses in hoisting ropes, little has been said concerning the effect of the elasticity of the rope itself on the stresses due to acceleration. Laschinger1 has calculated acceleration stresses for several cases but he has ignored the elasticity of the rope as a factor, except as it compresses the drum and stretches itself as it winds thereon. He also deals with steam plants and he shows the effect of the "jerky" start of the engine. This effect would actually be reduced by the elasticity of the cable. With the advent of the motor-driven hoist, new conditions have arisen. The jerk mentioned by Laschinger has been eliminated and smoother starting made possible. But the elastic properties of the rope seem to introduce considerable periodic acceleration stresses in the rope. The following discussion of acceleration stresses is based on the assumption of a constant acceleration at the drum. To be exact, the mathematical work is based upon the assumption that the top is moving upward with a constant acceleration, and ignores the fact that the cable is shortening as it winds. However, the effect of the shortening would be inconsiderable during the first part of the acceleration period. Most hoisting engineers make the assumption of constant acceleration at the drum. Under the older method of calculating acceleration stresses, this would be true with a constant torque motor. But if stresses vary, as this paper attempts to show that they do, constant torque would not give constant acceleration, although the velocity-time curves obtained in the full size test herein described showed that they approach rather closely to this condition, at least as nearly as could be measured. Friction drive hoists, long popular on the Continent, are now being installed in the U. S. and Canada by the Swedish firm of ASEA. Invented by C. F. Koepe and used first in 18.77, the principle is the same as that in elevator installations throughout the world. Inherent advantages of this system of hoisting were not fully developed until the recent introduction of the multiple-rope principle and design of concrete tower installations. Operators have a choice of independent operation of single skips and cages using counterweights, or use of skips or cages in balance. Also, hoisting control may be automatic, push button, or manual.

The determination of the state of stress existing at a point in any solid body requires the determination of the six components of the stress tensor relative to a convenient set of axes. One general method of doing this in rock is to make strain or deformation measurements associated with local relief of stress in a number of boreholes penetrating a limited volume in the vicinity of the point at which the stress is to be determined. The stress is assumed to be constant throughout this volume. Leeman1 has described a number of the instruments that have been developed for making deformation or strain measurements in boreholes. Panek2 has described the application of statistical methods to the determination of the average components of ground stress from sets of measurements made in boreholes by means of deformation meters of the type developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. In this paper attention is given initially to the strain cell developed for use on the flattened ends of boreholes by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) , South Africa. The equations required for evaluating the average components of ground stress from measurements made by means of the CSIR strain cell are derived. These equations are similar in form to those applying to measurements made by the borehole deformation meter developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The results of an investigation of the properties of the equations are described. These results are important in the practical use of both the instruments mentioned above and any instrument based on similar principles.

This is understandable to a degree in the general case because methods of revenue estimation are highly dependent upon the specific type of project under consideration and the nature of the market served. An important contributing factor, however, is that developing estimates of future sales prices for most products is a risky activity which is less amenable to credible quantitative modeling than other topics in investment analysis. The specific subset of capital intensive investments addressed in this book- mining projects-is particularly sensitive to projections of mineral prices, many of which are notoriously volatile. Furthermore, the unique nature of mineral markets, prices, and product specifications occupies a major role in mineral project evaluation. Even here, however, authors have tended to offer little assistance to the reader in estimating project revenues. For example, the most popular mining engineering textbook for four decades, Elements of Mining (Lewis and Clark, 1967), contains the following advice on estimating future mineral prices (pp. 359-360): "Since the life of the mine will extend over a number of years the future price of mineral products must be estimated in order to calculate the probable profit to be realized. Current prices may be used, but it is preferable to take the average price for the past 25 to 35 years as it covers definite business cycles. Some engineers believe that a mine should make a small profit if its highest-grade ore is marketed at the minimum price during the past 35 years. Business

I. INTRODUCTION AT the time of the discovery of America the old world had a scant supply-of the precious metals. Both the northern and the southern part of the new continent proved wonderfully rich in gold and silver and its treasures were eagerly looted; though the looting has lasted four centuries, the nines of its mountain chains are far from being exhausted. Even the later discoveries in Australasia and eastern Siberia could not rob the Western Hemisphere of its position as the greatest gold and silver producing region of the world, though finally the developments in a narrow and circumscribed area in South Africa wrested from the Americas their supremacy in the production of gold. Nevertheless the history of the two parts of the great western continent has been strikingly different. At first the Spaniards extracted vast treasures of silver from Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia, while Colombia and some placer deposits in Peru yielded a smaller quantity of gold. A couple of centuries later, a stream of gold began to flow from Brazil, the silver production from the countries mentioned above continuing strong in the meanwhile. Later on, the yield of South America diminished, but to offset this there began a wonderful series of discoveries in North America. The gold fields of California astonished the world; and when the cream of these had been skimmed off there began a no less amazing development of the Central Cordilleran gold and silver districts, which soon wade the United States the greatest producer of the precious metals. Aided by ever improving technique, extensive exploration, and a system of railroads, the yield was maintained and increased. Still later followed the discoveries of the gold fields of the arctic region and silenced those who had maintained that the zenith in gold production had passed. In introducing last year's Industrial Minerals Review, Stan Lefond accurately predicted that the 1974- 75 period would be quite difficult and frustrating. Although 1974 demand and prices for most industrial minerals were exceptionally strong, operating costs also rose rapidly-while shortages of supplies and equipment, symptomatic of an overheated economy, occurred from coast to coast. Thus, at the end of 1974 recessionary forces were accelerating-and the minerals industry will soon be facing falling demand as a consequence of sharp declines in auto production, housing, appliances, and other consumer goods. Moreover, when sales weaken, the high-volume, low-prices industrial minerals will incur sharply increased unit costs. To maintain adequate profit margins under these conditions will require cautious and perceptive management.

Rocks of the Precambrian Shield of Rusk County, Wis., were recognized as a favorable host for volcanogenic base metal deposits by personnel of Bear Creek Mining Co. Most of the county is covered by a thick layer of glacial drift: consequently, geophysical techniques played a prominent role in the exploration program conceived and initiated there in 1966. The original work on three Precambrian exposures was followed by an airborne electromagnetic survey and subsequent ground follow-up. A geophysical evaluation of air-borne anomaly F-22 defined a target which was interpreted as a massive sulfide body. Numerous potential field and electrical tools were utilized to describe the geometry and physical properties of the target. Drilling confirmed the massive sulfide interpretation and eztentually outlined a 6 million-ton copper deposit.

THE constitution of the system silver-mercury has attracted the attention of many investigators during the last two decades, but since their results are for the most part in poor agreement, there is little need for a review of their individual contributions. It remained for the very careful thermal and microscopic investigation of Murphy1 in 1931 to give the constitutional diagram in its present and unquestioned form, which is shown in Fig. 1. He devised methods for taking cooling curves on alloys under high pressures and for the microscopic observation of alloys which contained liquid mercury as a structural constituent at ordinary temperatures. The compositions of the intermediate phases were con-firmed and supplemented through X-ray analyses by Preston and Stenbeck.3 According to Murphy, at 276° C. silver is able to dissolve 44 to 45 weight per cent of mercury, which may increase at lower tempera-tures to about 50 per cent. Preston concluded that the saturation boundary occurred at 46 ± 2 per cent at 100° C. From the values reported in the literature, these are the only ones that may be accepted as lying even in the right region.

In situ solution mining of uranium has environmental advantages over conventional mining. The leaching of uranium, however, alters the ground-water quality in the aquifer where the mining occurs. Currently, regulations require that the ground water be restored to approximately its original condition. This paper, a summary of a study funded by the Bureau of Mines, reviews the state of the art in restoring ground-water quality after in situ uranium leaching. Current restoration practices discussed include disposal of liquid wastes in deep disposal wells and evaporation ponds, producing from all wells during restoration, and recirculating water purified in surface plants. Methods for predicting the effectiveness and cost of current techniques are presented. Possible alternative techniques are also described. Two restoration operations are discussed.

THe properties required of gold alloys for jewelry are not well standardized, due in part to problems peculiar to certain branches of the jewelry industry, in part to the individual preference of the fabricator and to his willingness to cope with certain difficulties in manufacture, which arise with the use of certain alloys. General Requirements In general, the properties desired may be classed as follows: 1. Color should conform to the dictates of good taste and smart style. 2. Corrosion resistance and tarnish resistance should he good. This is to a considerable extent determined by the carat. Resistance to such corrosive agents as mercuric chloride as well as certain depi1atories is unreasonable to expect and difficult to meet. 3. Strength and hardness must be adequate to maintain the delicate contours of finely modeled jewelry. 4. Wear resistance must be great enough to resist abnormal wear, such as is encountered by a wedding ring in a lifetime of wear. 5. Ductility must be sufficient to permit the fabrication of drawn shells, tubes and difficult shapes. Material having a yield point of not less than 60,000 lb. per sq. in., an ultimate strength of 100,000 Ib. per sq. in., and an elongation of 40 per cent. is desirable. 6. Melting point should be between 800" and 1200" C. Colored Golds The popular green and yellow golds are based on the gold-silver-copper alloys; in some cases modified by the introduction of zinc to improve the casting properties and to alter the color, and nickel to increase the strength. The properties of the Au-Ag-Cu system have been the subject of a very thorough investigation by Jänecke,l Sterner-Rainer12 and Carter."

THE chloridizing mill of the Standard Reduction Co. is located about 75 miles south of Salt Lake City on the Tintic branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western R. R. and 12 miles from the Tintic Standard mine. The daily capacity is 200 tons of a siliceous, low-grade, silver-lead ore from this property. It has operated continuously since it was started in January, 1921. The process consists essentially of a chloridizing roast followed by a percolating leach with a nearly saturated solution of common salt, acidified with sulfuric acid, the precipitation of silver on sponge copper and of copper and lead on tin-plate cuttings. The precipitates are shipped to a smelter. Some of the general ideas involved are said to have been used by Augustin in England, in 1840. A number of textbooks treat of the subject, especially the chloridizing roast followed by a leach with sodium hyposulfite or amalgamation. The process was revived in this district by Theo. P. Holt, N. C. Christensen, the Bureau of Mines, and others.

SAMPLING of the fluid from oil wells for percentages of oil, emulsified oil, and water during the last two years has brought out some interesting facts concerning oil-water emulsion. This result led to a laboratory investigation of emulsion, which substantiated the conclusions made from the field observations. The purpose of this paper is to present the information collected, the laboratory experiments, and our interpretation of the same. In order to define emulsified oil exactly, give its synthesis and origin, and to show how and when it is formed in the wells, the work was necessarily divided into two separate lines-laboratory work and field observations. It is hoped that this study may lead to a discussion of such points so that the petroleum engineer, geologist, or technologist may be benefited by its practical bearing on oil-field management. Special credit is due Mr. Everett Carpenter, chief geologist of the Empire Gas & Fuel Co., for his assistance and cooperation in this work. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS ON EMULSIFIED OIL Laboratory investigations were conducted in an attempt to learn the composition and some of the properties of emulsified oil, or B. S., as it is more commonly called, also to demonstrate, by laboratory methods, how B. S. may be formed under conditions similar to those existing at the time a well is being pumped, and how it may be broken down. Literature bearing on this subject is widely scattered and very limited in scope. Bacon and Hamor define B. S., or bottom settlings, as "earthy matter, inert organic matter, or, in the case of Pennsylvanian petroleum, an emulsion of paraffin wax and water, which accompanies crude oil." THE copper industry in the Province of Katanga, in the Belgian Congo, which is now controlled and operated by the Union Minere du Haut Katanga, had its inception many years ago in the vision of a Scotsman, Robert Williams, now Sir Robert Williams, Baronet. He it was who personally negotiated the mineral concession with King Leopold of Belgium, sent in the prospecting parties who located most of the present mines of the company, later arranged for the Belgian participation from which the present company was formed, and has been its active mentor ever since. The idea back of his efforts was the establishment of an industry on the Congo-Zambezi divide, of sufficient importance to draw up to it the head of the Cape to Cairo Railroad, the dream of Sir Cecil Rhodes, and the consummation of which he had left as a legacy to Mr. Williams, his successor. The reports of the prospecting expeditions showed that copper in profitable quantity was there, but many difficulties lay in the way of the establishment of the infant industry. The isolated location of the mines, various tribal wars, the Boer War, and many other factors contributed to making progress very slow. However, in spite of these difficulties the railroad was finally built and a blast-furnace plant erected at Lubumbashi, near Elisabethville, the capital of the Province. Operations of this plant were started in 1911, treating high-grade oxidized ores and producing pig copper by a reducing smelting. Production has been continuous since that time and the company has grown so that at present it ranks as the largest individual copper producer in the industry. It is a fitting monument to the foresight, optimism and driving force of its founder, and the progressive policies of his Belgian colleagues. In January, 1914, the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga engaged as its consulting engineer, Archer E. Wheeler, metallurgical engineer, at that time general superintendent of the Great Falls plant of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Mr. Wheeler was commissioned by the Board of Directors to proceed into Katanga, and make all necessary investigations to enable him to report on a comprehensive development program, and to recommend a scheme of treatment particularly for their low grade

THE composition and quality of finished steel depend upon selection and proportioning of the raw materials of the charge as well as upon control of furnace practice. This chapter deals only with the raw materials of the basic open-hearth process that are important in determining the composition of the steel or slay. They are the metallic charge, oxygen-bearing materials, fluxes, alloying and deoxidizing additions, and certain refractory materials used for maintenance of bottoms. Other refractories, which may affect the slag composition, are discussed in Chapter 3. Wide variations are possible in the type and composition of charged materials but certain limiting relations among the elements of the charge must be observed. Since the process consists essentially of refining by the oxidation of undesired elements, a balance must be established between the sources of oxygen and the elements in the charge that are subject to oxidation (see Chapters 2 and 7). For example, if it is desired to use a high ratio of blast-furnace hot metal to scrap, it is necessary to add an oxygen-bearing material such as ore or mill scale to eliminate the excess carbon and silicon that are present in the hot metal. An example of the opposite extreme is the use of a metallic charge composed entirely of steel scrap. With this type of charge, it is common practice to substitute burnt lime for limestone as a flux and to charge some carbonaceous material such as coke to avoid an excess of oxygen in relation to the elements of the charge that are subject to oxidation. Elements such as copper and nickel, which are not oxidized or eliminated by any other reaction, may be introduced into the charge only to the extent to which they are permissible in the finished steel. An example of adjustment of the charge for elements of this type is found in the use of steel scrap high in copper. IT was said by many who discussed Professor Posepny's admirable paper on the " Genesis of Ore-Deposits," read at the Chicago meeting of the Institute, in 1893, that its most valuable feature was the clear distinction which it drew between the influence upon ore-deposits of the "vadose " circulation of waters descending directly from the surface, and that of the deep underground circulation of waters generally coming from the depths, and assumed by the author to be ascending through more or less open spaces under the influence of heat. A little later the effect of the oxidizing action of the vadose circulation upon ore-deposits was ably and exhaustively treated by Prof. R. A. F. Penrose, in a paper on " The Superficial Alteration of Ore-Deposits "f-the only one, so far as I know, which has been exclusively devoted to this important subject. My own first detailed study of ore-deposits was made at Leadville, in 1880, at a time when almost the only minerals visible in those deposits were in oxidized forms. That this form was the result of the alteration of earlier sulphides by surface-waters had to be proved at the time by induction or analogy, the general correctness of which was, however, abundantly confirmed by subsequent developments. Thus I was early impressed with the importance of distinguishing, in the study of an ore-deposit, the alteration-products, resulting from the action of oxidizing waters descending from the present surface, from the earlier-formed sulphides; and, assuming that the latter were primary or original, I called the former secondary. In conducting the manufacture of extruded brass rods and brass forgings it has been noticed that there is considerable variation in the physical properties, particularly the machinability of different rods and forgings, even though the composition, working temperatures and method of manufacture remain the same. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to establish the cause and extent of this variation, and also to determine whether variations in composition within certain defined limits influence hardness and machinability to any marked degree. The writer believes that this variation probably is due to the variation in grain size of the metal, therefore the microstructures of several compositions under various conditions of working were examined in an effort to establish this as a fact. Survey of Previous Work in Studying Extrusion Defects Very little has been published concerning defects in extruded and forged brass. In 1921, R. Genders1 $ delivered a paper before the British Institute of Metals, relative to a defect inherent in the extrusion process. This defect, commonly found in extruded brass rod, shows up in the form of a circle in a transverse section consisting of oxides and impurities, and is generally present in the last 25 to 30 per cent of the rod. Genders concluded that the defect is caused by the turning inward of the skin of the billet at the edge of the plunger because the inside of the billet is more plastic than the outside, which is in contact with the cooler container; the outside skin will lag behind to form the rear end of the rod. Genders suggested a movable die as a remedy, and while this met with fair success, it is not used in present practice. About the same time as Genders' experiments, Tucker2 and Rosen-hain3 conducted experiments using colored plasticene in the form of a billet, and found much the same defect as Genders. IN the Leadville district toward the close of the "intermediate mesothermal period" of mineralization, there occurred a stage of ore deposition marked by a rather complex mineral association. As bismuth minerals formed in many places during this period, it is here called the "bismuth stage" for convenience of description. The minerals so far identified with this stage, listed roughly in the order of prominence, are: chalco-pyrite; several varieties of galena, differing slightly from one another in their small contents of silver, bismuth and tellurium; altaite; hessite; galenobismutite; alaskaite; aikinite; gold; tennantite; argentite; and perhaps sphalerite and arsenopyrite. With the exception of gold, the age relations of these minerals are difficult to determine. As shown in their descriptions, they all appear contemporaneous and hypogene. Gold may be in part contemporaneous, but most of it is distinctly later. Where minerals of this stage occur so that they can be mined alone, as at the Tucson mine, they constitute high-grade ore. Elsewhere their presence in small amounts has served to increase greatly the value of what otherwise would be low-grade pyritic or zinc-lead sulphide ore. The distribution of the bismuth ores corresponds closely to the distribution of gold ores, though not so general. It seems probable that most of the gold in the district was deposited during the "bismuth stage." These ores occur relatively near the supposed centers of mineralization in Breece and Printer Boy Hills or deep down along the Tucson-Maid fault, which is one of the well recognized channels of mineralization in the Iron Hill and Graham Park areas- Consideration of the high-grade nature of this mineralization and the fact that it appears to be found relatively close to the source of mineralization suggests that prospecting along some of the known channels, even deeper than they have yet been prospected, may offer hope of commercial success.

I had the honor to present to the American Institute of Mining Engineers at the Pittsburg meeting, February, 1896, a paper having the foregoing title, in which I said : " It has generally been accepted as a fact that cast-iron, under the influence of repeated shocks, becomes brittle, and will finally break under a blow which otherwise it would have withstood. It will probably surprise metallurgists, therefore, to learn that experiment disproves the supposed fact, and establishes exactly its opposite. " The result of about a thousand tests of bars of cast-iron of all grades, from the softest foundry mixtures to the strongest car-wheel metal, enables me to assert with confidence that, within limits, cast-iron is materially strengthened by subjection to repeated shocks or blows."
