The U-Cr system is of the simple eutectic type with some solid solubility of chromium in r and ß uranium. The eutectic occurs at 20 atomic pet Cr and melts at 859°C. The maximum solubility of chromium in y uranium is 4 atomic pet at the eutectic temperature, and in ß uranium the solubility is estimated to be 1 atomic pet. y-ß and ß-a transformations were found to occur at 737°estimatedt° and 612°C respectively. DURING 1944 and 1945, the U-Cr constitution diagram was studied in this laboratory as a part of a research program on uranium metallurgy in the Manhattan Project, and the work was described in a Manhattan Project report issued in December 1945. This paper is based on that report, which has been declassified. Prior to this study, it had been shown by other Manhattan Project workers that the low Cr-U alloys could be quenched to retain the form of uranium. Experimental The uranium used in this work was massive metal prepared in this laboratory and contained less than 0.1 pct of other elements. The chromium was 200 mesh powder obtained from the A. D. McKay Co. and was found on analysis to be 99.5 pct Cr with 0.3 pct Fe the major impurity. Alloys, weighing 400 to 600 g, were prepared by induction heating the components to 1700°C in slip-cast ZrO, crucibles in a vacuum of 3x103 mm Hg. TO prevent too violent agitation of the melt by the induction field with subsequent crucible breakage and sample loss, the ZrO2 crucible was placed in a graphite crucible, which was surrounded by a layer of powdered carbon insulation 2 to 3 cm thick. Polished vertical sections of the alloys were examined microscopically to confirm their homogeneity. Heating and cooling curves were taken on the alloys by reheating them in ZrO, crucibles to 1200°C and inserting a mullite-protected chromel-alumel thermocouple into the melt by means of a slip seal in the vacuum head of the furnace. A recording potentiometer traced the curves which had a slope of from 3" to 6" per min. Samples of the alloys were prepared for metallo-graphic examination by conventional mechanical polishing techniques followed by an electrolytic polish in an ethylene glycol-phosphoric acid-ethyl alcohol bath. The structure of the alloys was brought out clearly by this procedure so that no further etching was required. Samples for chemical analysis were taken from drillings from the top, center, and bottom sections of the alloys. The uranium was determined by titra-tion with Ce(SO1)2, while the chromium was titrated with FeSO,; the uranium and chromium totaled at least 99.6 pct in all of the alloys prepared. X-ray samples were prepared by filing bulk specimens in a helium-filled glove box and annealing the resulting powder in a zirconium-gettered helium atmosphere. A 114.6 mm diam Debye-Scherrer camera and a Weyland nonsymmetrical self-focusing camera were used with filtered copper radiation to obtain the powder X-ray diffraction data. Results The data obtained in this study have been combined to construct the constitution diagram of the U-Cr system shown in Fig. 1 where the arrests observed in cooling curves are indicated by dots. The liquidus arrest was quite distinct in thermal data taken on alloys in the range 0 to 20 atomic pct Cr. The eutectic arrest was not observed in studies on the 2.5 and 4.5 pct Cr samples but appeared in the 7.5 pct samples, which suggested some solubility of chromium in y uranium. On quenching from 859 °C, the 2.5 pct sample showed but one phase while the 4.5 pct sample contained a small amount of the eutectic along the grain boundaries; see Figs. 2 and 3. From this the maximum solubility of chromium in r uranium has been set at 4 pct. X-ray studies on these samples showed that the r phase was not retained at room temperature by quenching, but in each case a pattern was observed .which has been identified with the ß phase of uranium. Thermal data show the y-ß transformation of uranium lowered to 737°C as a consequence of this solubility. On quenching from the ß range (660°C), precipitation of chromium in the primary uranium is observed in the 2.5 and 4.5 pct Cr samples (see Figs. 4 and 5),

By American tradition, if not by rational decision, publicly owned natural resources have been transferred to private industry for processing. The process of transfer requires specific determination of the price which the patentee, buyer, or lessee must pay to the government in exchange for the right to develop a resource, and selection of the patentee, buyer, or lessee from among several possible contestants. Pricing of natural resources owned by the government presents a set of problems quite different from ordinary commodity pricing. Natural resources in situ are not homogeneous commodities. Within any class of natural resources, specific leasable parcels will differ in value by reason of location and accessibility, as well as quality and quantity. Thus, there is no "going price;" every lease within a specific resource class will have a different value. To complicate further the pricing and buyer selection problems, competition may not be reliable. Natural-resource markets are characterized by oligopsony conditions. In a significant number of cases, as will be shown later, there has been only one bidder for a given lease, and in most lease sales the number of bidders is equal to or less than three. As a further complication, there is great uncertainty regarding the value of specific resources, even among the best-informed buyers, as well as within the leasing agency. In some instances, particularly with regard to oil and gas resources, there may be uncertainty about the presence of resources, as well as the quantity and quality of any resources contained in the tract offered for lease. In other cases, such as oil shale and some deep ocean minerals where new technologies are involved, the presence of the resource is clearly established. There may be a relatively high degree of knowledge about the quantity and quality of the resource, but there is great uncertainty concerning the cost of production. These problems in total make it difficult for the leasing agency to appraise accurately the resource to be leased, as well as for the potential bidder to calculate a bid price that will yield him a normal profit. The pricing goal of the federal government as the seller or lessee may be to capture the economic rent; that is, the price of a resource might equal its discounted present value. A required price substantially above this amount would either generate no bids, or, in the long run, would bankrupt the buyer. A price below this amount is a disguised subsidy to the lessee. A subsidy to mineral lessees, as to any other economic interest group, as a minimum should be justified by a clear showing of net external benefits from the economic activity. In the case of timber sales by the U.S. Forest Service, the Forest Service Handbook asserts that "the aim in national forest stumpage appraisal is to determine market value,"8 and "market value" is equated to "fair market value." TO THE AMERICAN MINING CONGRESS. AMERICAN INSTITUTE OE MINING ENGINEERS. MINING AND METALLURGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA. The committee that makes this report was appointed at the meeting of the American Mining Congress, at Denver, Colo., in. November, 1906. The appointment had in view the drafting. of a law for the regulation of quarrying and metalliferous mining under the police laws of the States, with the hope that the uniform adoption of such a law could tend to reduce the number of accidents in mining. Since its. appointment, the committee has had' under serious and continuous consideration the matter with which it was charged. At the meetings 0f the American Mining Congress in 19o7, 1908 and 1909, it reported progress. At the meeting in 1909 it was authorized to present its report not only to the American Mining Congress, but also to the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the. Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and to present its report in printed form during the interim between meetings of the American Mining Congress. The committee collected from the officials of the States of the Union copies of their mining laws. With the assistance of the Engineering and Mining Journal copies of the laws 0f Great Britain, the Transvaal, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, New aland, and certain European countries were also obtained. These laws were subjected to careful study. The first publication of the committee was a summary of the more important metalliferous mining laws 0f this country. Upon the basis of the existing laws of the States of the Union, Great Britain, and the English speaking colonies, a tentative draft. was prepared and printed in limited number in 1909, for convenience in securing the advice and criticism of a considerable number 0f persons engaged in the mining industry. In this way valuable suggestions were received. At the request of the chairman of this committee, Mr. Frederick L. Hoffman, statistician of the Prudential Insurance Company, of Newark, N. J., summarized and reviewed the available statistics of fatalities in metalliferous mining in the United States. Mr. Hoffman's report was published in the Engineering and Mining

NEW place was assigned to the women for their headquarters at the annual meeting of the Auxiliary but they, as usual, occupied a large place in the activities of the annual meeting. The alcove on the Thirty-ninth Street side of the building was a busy place on Monday morning, as the members of the various sections from New York to California greeted each other. The registration was conducted under the supervision of Mrs. Wolfes, Miss Georgene Davis and Mrs. Jennings, while Mrs. Hursh, Mrs. Hyde, Mrs. Charlton Reynders, and others dispensed tickets to the various functions that had been provided for entertainment. There seemed to be the usual number registered, but when only one member of the District of Columbia Section made herself known everyone wondered why the large delegation of last year had so dwindled. The explanation appeared next day, when a number of others from that Section arrived, telling of a delightful reception on the night before, at the White House. Mrs. Hoover had honored the "Canaries"¬(the organization of Lone Girl Scout' workers) the officers of the Section, and their husbands, who for once became only "so and so's husband." Luncheon was served on the fifth floor on Monday, the hostesses for that day being Mesdames C. F. Ayer, Willis Burns, G. W. Farny, H. G. Moulton, and T. T. Read. Two papers dealing with Noranda's milling operations have already been presented. The first1 of these covered the initial metallurgical problems connected with the treatment of the ore, while the second2 described the development of the mill from a 500-ton unit in 1928 to one with a daily capacity of 3000 tons less than six years later. At the time the second paper was written the equipment whirh had been installed to bring the mill capacity up to 3000 tons was being tuned into production and for this reason, though each step had previously been tested by a large-scale pilot operation, it was thought advisable to withhold metallurgical data until any starting-up difficulties had been overcome and anticipated requirements fulfilled. These requirements called for an improvement in gold recovery without any lowering of the previous ratio of concentration, and the pages that follow deal with the methods by which this result was obtained. An idea of the character of Noranda concentrating ore will be gained from an inspection of the following mineralogical analysis of the ore treated by the mill during 1933: MineRal Content Mineral ConteNt Chalcopyrite, per cent..... 6.8 Silica and silicates, per cent............ 18.3 Pyrite, per cent........... 22.1 Gold, native and as telluride, oz. per ton 0.15 Pyrrhotite, per cent....... 51.5 Silver, probably as argentite, oz. per tou 0.35 Magnetite, per cent....... 0.5 Thesr figures, which are typical, show that over 73 per cent of the ore treated consists of pyrite and pyrrhotite. Determirnation of the proportion of unrecovered gold associated with each of these minerals was therefore of primary importance in developing a suitable method for improving gold recovery. As pyrrhotite is magnetic, this information was obtained by making magnetic sorting tests on samples of the mill tailing and screening the material thus segregated. THE North Lily Mine started its career in an unusual way it was discovered by a geologist. The remarkable circumstance of driving a 2400-ft. drift into an unexplored country and "hitting her on the nose," indicates that geologists are sometimes numbered among those whom the Lord loves. Diamond- drilling from surface had previously shown the presence and position of the Ophir beds, and surface showings of pebble-dykes, faults, and bleached rhyolite indicated conditions similar to those at the Tintic Standard "Pot-hole." The discovery drift from the Tintic Stand- ard 700-level reached the North Lily orebody in January, 1926, and development and stoping were continued by Tintic Standard men and equipment until the North Lily shaft was sunk and put into service in May, 1928. The discovery drift was run on a cooperative basis by the Tintic Standard and North Lily mining com- panies. Finding the North Lily mine cost the North Lily company $26,000. The Tintic Standard Mining Co. furnished men and equipment to drive this discovery drift at a fraction of what it would have cost to find the orebody from surface. This was the beginning of the friendly cooperation that still exists. Through Tintic Standard ground the Tintic Standard paid two- thirds of the cost and the North Lily one-third; the cost of the drift through Eureka Lily, into North Lily ground, was paid by North Lily. Later, another drift from the Tintic Standard 900-level was run on the same plan, excepting that Eureka Lily paid its share of the cost; that is, the Eureka Lily paid one-third of the expense in Tintic Standard ground, and the Eureka Lily two-thirds and North Lily one-third in Eureka Lily ground. This 900-drift was driven by North Lily from the Eureka Lily line to near the North Lily west side-line. From this point the Chief Consolidated continued the drift well into Tintic Bullion ground.

it is well known1 that racemic mixtures of optical isomers can be separated by passing their solutions through a column packed with r- or 1-quartz powder so that one of the isomers becomes adsorbed selectively on the asymmetric quartz surfaces. Although the natural occurrence of r- and 1-quartz is more or less equally distributed, some localities show enough deviations toward a higher proportion of l-quartz2 to suggest that optical isomerism might influence quartz flotation. Beta-amines have an asymmetric carbon atom, and therefore optical activity may be expected. Beta-amines are reported to behave quite differently from alpha-amines in the flotation upgrading of certain oxidized iron ores.3 It is of interest, for both practical and theoretical reasons, to determine whether or not optical isomerism plays a role in the amine flotation of quartz. In this article the results of Hallimond tube flotation tests and of adsorption measurements using d-beta-phenylisopropylamine on both r- and 1-quartz are compared. D-beta-phenylisopropylamine was chosen for the tests because it is commercially available in optical isomers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Brazilian quartz crystals were hand-sorted according to the difference in trigonal trapezohedral faces, and each crystal was further checked by the Airy's spiral.4 The respective crystals were then crushed, and the -150 + 200-mesh fractions were screened out for the Hallimond tube tests. The samples were cleaned by brief leaching with warm, dilute hydrochloric acid, and then by repeated rinsing with distilled water. In preparation for the adsorption measurements, they were then dry-ground in a pebble mill for several hours, washed a few times with distilled water, and finally dried in a vacuum desiccator. By means of the Krypton gas adsorption method, the specific surfaces of r- and 1-quartz samples were determined to be 27,700 and 19,800 sq cm per gm respectively, the difference being due mainly to the decantation procedure rather than to the inherent difference in their grindability. D-beta-phenylisopropylamine was the only collector used in the study. It was solubilized by neutralizing with 110% of the stoichiometric requirement of 0.1 N hydrochloric acid. The specific rotation of the d-beta-phenylisopropylamine was determined with a polari-meter using sodium D line to be, Although the d-beta-phenylis~prop~lamine showed absorption maxima in the wave length region of 250 to 270 millimicrons, due presumably to the phenyl group, these peaks were too sensitive to be used for colorimetric determination of the residual concentration in the adsorption measurements. The amine-picrate method, used in the colorimetric analysis of dodecylammonium chloride,' was found to work satisfactorily for the d-beta-phenylisopropylamine. The adsorption densities were thus determined after equilibrating 40 gm of the ground quartz sample with 300 ml of solution by tumbling in separate glass-stoppered Erlenmeyer flasks for one hour. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 presents the adsorption densities of d-beta-phenylisopropylamine on the r- and 1-quarts in the pH range of 6 to 7.5. MY endeavor in this paper will be to tell something of the accomplishments and current problems of the anthracite producer and to suggest some of the avenues for technical development that seem to me to be the most necessary and likely to bear fruitful results. The several subjects, that I find of most interest will be taken up individually with brief reference to the future trend. Underground Mining and Loading ?In this field great progress has been made in the last twenty years, beginning with the introduction of the scraper system. The electrical hoists for the operation of scrapers have been improved, and give little trouble, but there is an open field for the improvement of the auxiliary apparatus, particularly in the application of roller-hearing sheaves to the guiding of scraper ropes. Also notable in the last six or seven years is the introduction of shaker chutes, so that far more anthracite is now loaded over them than by scrapers. This trend should continue to be manifest, particularly if those who are looking ahead and who are charged with the development of this specialty continue constantly to study and improve the mechanical design of their shakers.

High-grade copper ore was discovered in 1932 in the long-dormant Mountain City (Cope) mining district, Elko County, Nevada. From 1932 to 1947, the one producing mine in the district, the Mountain City Copper Mine, produced 1,109,878 short dry tons of ore averaging 9.745 per cent copper, 0.274 ounces of silver, and 0.0057 ounces of gold per ton. The Mountain City Copper Mine is developed in eugeosynclinal rocks of Ordovician age, the Valmy Formation, which is part of the upper plate of the Roberts Mountains thrust. On the Valmy were deposited unconformably first, a elastic formation of Devonian or Mississippian age, the Grossman Formation, succeeded unconformably by a ·sequence of three conformable formations, the Banner, the Nelson, and the Mountain City. The Banner Formation probably is early Late Mississippian in age; the ages of the Nelson and Mountain City are not known precisely but are believed to be of Late Mississippian and Carboniferous(?) age, respectively. A thick formation of elastic rocks, limestone, and volcanics, the Reservation Hill Formation, has been thrust over the Mountain City. The age of the Reservation Hill is unknown but is presumed to be Pennsylvanian(?) and Permian(?). Several plutons of Cretaceous quartz monzonite intrude the Paleozoic formations; they and the intruded formations have been laid bare by erosion, and several sequences of volcanic rocks of Miocene and Pliocene age, and perhaps in part older, have been successively deposited on irregular erosion surfaces. The primary mineralization of the Mountain City Copper Mine is believed to postdate the deposition of the Nelson Formation and to predate the intrusion of the quartz monzonite. The primary ore bodies are lenticular in shape and are composed largely of quartz, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. The ore lenses, in general, strike northwestward and dip northward. They occur in the Valmy Formation within a definite stratigraphic sequence composed largely of shales with associated minor quartzite lenses. The ore is epigenetic. The principal ore body, the "200," was completely leached to the 200 level. Abruptly beneath the barren gossan was supergene copper sulfide ore, much of which assayed 50 per cent copper. The secondary copper minerals are sooty and massive chalcocite, bornite, and covellite. The supergene enrichment of the ore may have required a large part of Tertiary time.

Electrodiffusion in y cerium reported by Henrie has been confirmed and a Preliminary estimate made of the relative rates of electrodiffusion of iron, cobalt, and nickel. These diffuse to the anode at rates decreasing in that order. In addition, copper and manganese exhibit slow, but detectable, diffusion to the anode and molybdenum exhibits detectable diffusion to the cathode. The electrodiffusion of carbon, .zirconium, antimony, magnesium , and silicon in y cerium could not be detected. Iron and cobalt diffuse in y cerium at rates proportional to the current density and with no apparent dependence on temperature. Decreasing polarization of iron and cobalt with increasing temperature, which cancels the expected rate increase, would account for this behavior. The electrodiffusion rate of iron in y uranium and in E plutonium has been measured. Diffusion of iron is anode-directed. Tin was found to diffuse to the cathode, in y uranium, at an appreciable rate. In all of these solvent metals, negative ions diffuse to the anode and positive ions to the cathode. The potential field effect appears to account satisfactorily for these results. FROM early experimental work summarized by Jost1 and Seith,2 the driving force for electrodiffusion was attributed to the potential field acting on ions in a metal. More recently, Heuman,3 Wever,4 and Huntington5 have shown that momentum interchange between conduction electrons and mobile entities in the metal contributes to electrodiffusion. Electron momentum interchange is anodically directed and the direction of diffusion resulting from the field force is dependent upon the charge on the diffusing entity. These two effects may either reinforce or oppose each other. Glinchuk6 has pointed out that momentum transfer in defect conductors should be cathode-directed and this appears to be the case as demonstrated by wever's4 work on iron. Barnett's7 work, on the other hand, indicates that, even in defect conductors, electrons show a negative E/m ratio when accelerated with respect to the lattice and should lead to anode-directed momentum transfer. In discussing this problem, Wever and seith8 suggest that defect electrons interact preferentially with activated ions so as to allow a net movement toward the cathode while still maintaining an electron momentum transfer in the anode direction. Williams and Huffine9 and Henriel0 have demonstrated that electrodiffusion may be useful for purification of yttrium and cerium. In yttrium, Williams and Huffine note that movement of several metallic impurities toward the anode is in keeping with observations in most other metallic systems and indicates that yttrium remains a normal electronic conductor at least to 1230°C. Close inspection of their data shows, however, that oxygen, nitrogen, and the transition elements diffused toward the anode, while nontransition elements diffused toward the cathode. This suggests that potential field effects may have been appreciable. The present work was concerned with the applicability of electrodiffusion as a technique for purification of plutonium, but, because of the obvious hazard inherent in work with this metal, experiments to develop the technique were carried out using cerium and uranium. The results of electrodiffusion measurements on these metals and on plutonium are reported here. EXPERIMENTAL The metal specimens prepared for this work were 6 in. long, 1/4 to 1/2 in. wide, and 1/16 to 3/32 in. thick. The uranium specimens were machined from a bar which analyzed 310 ppm Fe and the electrodiffusion of iron was followed by spectrographic and by chemical analysis. Cerium and plutonium specimens were cut from sheet rolled from ingots obtained from molten salt-metal equilibrations during which radioactive tracers were introduced. The electrodiffusion of the tracers was subsequently determined by counting methods. The specimens were electrolyzed between nickel electrodes containing resistance heaters used to equalize the specimen and electrode temperatures, thereby reducing thermal gradients. The temperature of the electrodes adjacent to the ends of the specimen was measured with chromel-alumel thermocouples which were connected to the heater controls. The surface temperature of the specimen at a point midway between the electrodes was measured with a sapphire rod pyrometer, the output of which controlled the dc power supply. Drilling activity in Kansas during 1945 continued at an accelerated pace to meet the demands of war; 1810 tests were drilled as compared with 1856 tests the previous year, 1771 tests in 1943, and 1516 tests in 1942. During the year 31 new oil pools and 10 new gas pools were discovered. Of a total of 364 wildcats drilled, 323 were dry; and of 1446 tests drilled in pools, 825 were oil wells, 197 gas wells, and 425 dry holes.

The dihedral angles of the solid-liquid interfaces were measured at various temperatures above the solidus and the interfacial energies calculated when small additions of copper, indium, lithium, magnesium, antimony, and silicon were made to an aluminum alloy containing 3 pct Sn. When the results were compared with those of the Al-Sn alloy some differences were found which could be interpreted in terms of the ability of the added element to enter into solution or form intermetallic compounds with the aluminum and tin. It was shown that in some cases considerable changes in the shape of intergvanular liquid films can be brought about by comparatively small compositional changes in the alloy. DURING the melting or solidification of an alloy a temperature range is usually found where the presence of a liquid phase may be detected at the grain boundaries of a solid. It is believed that the presence of this liquid phase is responsible for hot tearing in castings and welds and hot shortness in the working of some alloys at elevated temperatures. Rosenberg, Flemings, and Taylor1 in a study of the solidification of aluminum castings have indicated the importance of intergranular liquid films and shown that their shape and distribution at the end of solidification effect the hot tearing characteristics of the material. The shape of such intergranular liquid films are determined largely by the ratio between the solid-liquid interfacial energy (yLS) and the grain boundary energy (ySS). A measure of this ratio (yLS/ySS , relative interfacial energy) is the dihedral angle 8. The dihedral angle 0 is related to the relative interfacial energy by the following expression: Rogerson and Borland 2 have also suggested that the shape of the intergranular liquid is an important factor in determining the susceptibility of a material to hot shortness. They showed that on a comparative basis materials having the lowest dihedral angles at a given temperature gave the greatest severity of cracking. They stated that liquid in the form of globules should be less harmful than liquid in the form of extensive films as more intergranular cohesion should be possible. Rogerson and Borlland 2 also showed that the susceptibility of an A1-Sn alloy to hot cracking can be reduced by small additions of cad- mium. It was found that the cadmium gave an increase in the dihedral angle at all temperatures. Ikeuye and smith3 investigated changes in the dihedral angle and relative interfacial energy with temperature for a number of ternary alloys formed when small additions of bismuth, cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc were made to an A1-Sn alloy. They found that in most instances changes in the dihedral angle were caused by compositional changes in the liquid phase; as the composition of the liquid approached that of the solid the dihedral angle decreased. They noted that the addition of a third element which was soluble in both the liquid and solid phases at a given temperature may decrease the dihedral angle (e.g., the addition of copper or zinc) but otherwise the ternary alloys formed exhibited dihedral angles between those of the A1-Sn binary alloy and those of the binary alloy of aluminum with the added element. Dwarakadasa and Krishnan4 investigated the changes in dihedral angle and relative interfacial energy with temperature when small additions of magnesium, iron, silicon, manganese, sulfur, cobalt, and silver were made to a copper alloy containing 3 pct Bi. They found that in all cases the added elements gave an increase in the dihedral angle and relative interfacial energy when compared with the values obtained for the simple binary alloy at the same temperature. It was noted that an increase in temperature gave a decrease in dihedral angle and relative interfacial energy in each of the ternary alloys studied. Similar results have been obtained by Ramachandran and Krishnan5 for the addition of small quantities of lead. This paper describes the application of dihedral angle measurement to the determination of the shapes of liquid phases at various temperatures above the solidus when small additions of copper, indium, magnesium, lithium, antimony, and silicon are made to an aluminum alloy containing nominally 3 pct Sn. An attempt is made to correlate the measurements with the relative solubility of the added elements in tin and aluminum. The work was undertaken to provide more data concerning the effects of temperature and composition on the shape of liquid films above the solidus. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In the present work ternary aluminum alloys containing nominally 3 pct Sn and small additions of high-purity copper, indium, lithium, magnesium, antimony, and silicon were made. The alloys were melted in a graphite crucible under an inert atmosphere of argon and cast into ingots 6 in. long by 0.5 in. diam. The ingots were then cut into rods 1.5 in. long, given a 50 pct cold reduction, and machined into test pieces 0.5 in. long by 0.5 in, diam for heat treatment. PHYSICAL AND CLIMATIC DIVISIONS. PERU is divided into three regions-the coast, the sierra, or high mountainous region, and the a montana," or forest region of the Amazon basin. The Coast.-The coast is an arid region. No rain falls excepting in the extreme northern part, which borders the Gulf of Guayaquil. There is, however, a slight precipitation in the form of mist (garua), which occurs on the coast hills during the so-called winter months. The aridity of the coast is due principally to the antarctic or Humboldt ocean-current, which, being cold and having a temperature lower than that of the land, absorbs rather than produces vapors. The coast mists occur during the season when the land is relatively cold. Near the Gulf of Guayaquil the antarctic current diverges from the coast, so that in the Tumbes valley and adjacent country the conditions in the summer months are such as produce rains. In the remaining valleys of the coast, agriculture is made possible only by means of irrigation, and is accordingly very limited in extent, although rich and varied. In the northern and south-central portions of the coast, plains extend inland from the sea, while in the southern part there is a coastal plain separated from the Pacific by a range of coast hills. Between the northern and south-central plains, as well as between the south-central and southern, the foothills of the sierra descend to the seacoast. The Sierra.-The sierra embraces the high land dominated by the lofty cordilleras of the Andes. In the southern part of Peru there are two cordilleras, the western and the eastern, which enter from Chile and Bolivia respectively, and inclose between them the Titicaca Lake basin. To the north of Lake Titicaca these cordilleras unite in the knot of Vilcanota, south of Cuzco. THE Russellton preparation plant of Republic Steel Corp., located north of Pittsburgh, Pa., prepares 3 1/2x0-in. Thick-Freeport coal by means of a 13-ft 6-in. diam Chance cone and 16 No. 7 Deister tables. The plant feed ranges between 370 and 410 tons per hr, of which approximately 31 pct is ¼x0-in. size, and the plant reject ranges between 14 and 16 pct of the feed. The 3½xY4-in. washed coal, the cone product, is dewatered and desanded by a double-deck Parrish-type shaking screen 46 ft long and 7 ft wide. The 1¼x¼-in. portion is further dewatered by two 4x12-ft single-deck vibrating screens. The ¼x0-in. washed coal from the tables is distributed to three 54x70 in. Bird centrifuges. The dewatered centrifuge product is combined with the product of the de-watering screens prior to loading into railroad cars. During the early part of 1951 complaints were received from officials at Republic's coke ovens concerning the moisture content of Russellton washed coal. EXPERIENCE has shown how difficult it is to obtain information regarding laboratory-tests in connection with the chlorination-process for the extraction of gold from its ores, and I therefore present the following method, somewhat in detail, for the benefit of those who may desire to pursue research work in this field. The ore chosen was a partly-decomposed porphyry, extremely siliceous and comparatively soft, and of an average value per ton of from $25 to $26 in gold and $0.68 in silver. The chemical analysis gave : Fe2O3, 3.35; FeS, 1.5; MnO2, 0.75; ZnCO3, 4; Al2O3, 3.20; H2O, 0.7; SiO2 and insol., 83.50 per cent. The ore, first crushed to pass a 5-mesh screen, was coned and quartered until a 45-lb. sample was obtained. Samples for assay and analysis, taken from this lot by means of riffles, were crushed to pass a 100-mesh screen. The original sample was divided into 10-lb. lots, of which one was crushed to pass a 10-mesh screen; another through a 12-; the third through a 20-, .and the last through a 30-mesh screen. Because of the production of an excessive quantity of fine material it was deemed inexpedient to crush finer than 30-mesh size-a decision the wisdom of which is proved by the data in Table I., showing the increasing ratio of slimes, in proportion as the ore is crushed finer. In order to determine the percentage of fines in the sizes of mesh selected, a weighed sample of ore was taken from each mesh, and a sample from the 10-mesh lot was passed successively through 20-, 40- and 100-mesh screens, and the percentage remaining on each screen determined. This process was repeated with the 12-, 20- and 30-mesh lots, with the results given in Table I.

INTRODUCTION. THE term matte is applied to smelting-products so extremely diverse in composition and physical properties that it appears impossible to devise any generic formula to represent, chemically, the manner in which the varied proportions of the almost unlimited possible constituents combine with each other. Mattes produced in copper-smelting, in distinction from those produced in smelting-operations in which the recovery of copper is secondary to that of other metals, cover a narrower range in composition. The copper-content of such mattes vary from 20 to 80 per cent., and even this range is much smaller in general practice since it is found advantageous, when possible, to produce mattes with about. 50 per cent. of copper in the first operation. Further, it is unusual that arsenic or antimony occurs in copper-ores in sufficient proportions to form arsenides or antimonides in such quantities that they will separate out from the furnace-products, as is common in lead-smelting. Generally, the mattes produced in copper-smelting are composed mainly of copper (usually greater than 35 per cent.), iron and sulphur, the remaining elements being usually in proportions sufficiently small to allow of their treatment as impurities, rather than as essential constituents of the mattes. In modern practice of smelting copper-ores in blast-furnaces the tendency is to approach pyritic smelting as nearly as pos¬sible, the furnaces being low and the air supplied being largely in excess of that required for complete combustion of the carbonaceous fuel. Hence the atmosphere of the blast-furnace thus used is usually oxidizing or Dearly neutral? and, as a consequence, the reduction of metallic iron that was a necessary evil of former practice is of unusual occurrence in operations where the main object is the recovery of copper. WITH the exception of lead sulphate, all common metallic sulphates are completely decomposed upon heating into metallic oxide, sulphur trioxide, sulphur dioxide and oxygen. Some give up their trioxide readily at a low temperature, others require considerable heat and much time to be completely freed from sulphur. Kerl in 1881 arranged the principal metallic sulphates as they are decomposed by a rising temperature in the following order: silver, iron, copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese and lead, lead sulphate being decomposed only slightly at a white heat. The researches of Bradford, published in 1903, show, however, that ferrous sulphate is decom¬posed at 590° C., cupric sulphate at G53° C. and argentic sulphate at 1,095° C. By the present investigation it will be seen that zinc sulphate is decomposed at 739° C. As far then as our present knowledge goes, the order in which the decomposition of the leading metallic sulphates takes place is the one given in Table I.
