(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) THE James diagonal-plane slimer is specially adapted to handle the finest slimes, but it will also handle sands as coarse as 40-mesh. The saving efficiency of this machine is due to the original construction of the deck, and to the rapid reciprocating movement imparted to it by the head-motion. The deck consists of a plurality of connected planes, having a certain fixed ratio of inclination one to another. These planes intersect each other diagonally to the stroke-line of the table and are arranged so as to give the pulp on the table a double treatment. This double concentration performed by the diagonal-plane deck produces cleaner concentrates and tailings than those obtained by the operation of two separate machines. The action of the diagonal planes settles, combines, and holds all the concentrates in one compact mass, sharply defined from the gangue, and easily cut away without loss. Many slime-concentrating machines distribute the feed-pulp for a distance of 4 or 5 ft. only, and upon a very limited settling-surface. This results in a thick, heavy deposit, from which it is impossible to stratify the values and wash, away the gangue, the resulting products being dirty concentrates, and tailings carrying high values. The diagonal-plane slimer distributes the feed-pulp for a distance of 10 ft., and upon a settling-surface having an area of 40 sq. ft.; in other words, it spreads the pulp thinly on the table, which allows the metallic values to settle through the gangue quickly, forming a bottom stratum from which the thinly-distributed overlying stratum. of gangue is easily brushed away by the feed-water without disturbing the underlying concentrates. Measurements of the amount of water flowing in many of the larger rivers of the west have been made by the United States Geological Survey, and by this means the daily discharges of these rivers have been computed for a period of over two years. These measurements have been confined mainly to that part of the country commonly known as the arid region, where the rainfall is insufficient for the needs of plants most useful to man, and the supply of water, not only for agriculture, but also for mining and all other purposes, falls below the demands made upon it. In such localities flowing water has a great value, for without it many industries are impossible. Experience has shown that in the western part of the United States, over an area a little less than two-fifths of the whole extent of the country, there are great bodies of fertile land enjoying a genial climate, and in every way adapted to the support of a large population, except in the one particular of water-supply. By utilizing the water available, portions of this rich land can be rendered valnable. In other words, the laud-values rest directly upon the prospects of a continuous artificial water-supply. The same is true of many mineral lands, which require for hydraulic mining, or for the supply of concentrating-works, stanip-mills, etc., a certain water-supply, and are impaired in value if this supply is inadequate or irregular. The pressure of this need upon the mining industry is not so widespread, or in the first instance so severe as upon agriculture; but as different regions become more thickly settled, and the two industries compete for a water-supply not sufficient for both, it, is probable that the miner will suffer. But he can snspend operations with less inconvenience than the farmer. I HAVE chosen for my subject a mining district which in an article published four years ago I referred to in the following words: "One of the un- usual anomalies of mining development and history is that a district having added thirty or more millions of wealth to a principal mining state, situated within four to six miles of two transcontinental railways and two auto highways, and within 150 miles of the most widely advertised part of the United States, should have been so completely lost sight of that probably not one mining man in ten can tell offhand where it is situated." But this district never was a dead one: it was only slumbering. During the past four months, day by day, it has been emerging from that state of slumber.

THe present methods of unloading ore and coarse-crushing at the Magna plant of the Utah Copper Co. are the developments of the pas five years. Hand dumping and breaking have given way to the rotary car dump and large gyratory; and the bucket elevators and stationary screens have been replaced by conveyors and shaking screens. The coarse-crushing plant may be broadly divided into two units the primary crushing and the secondary crushing, or primary roll, unit The former was erected in 1923; with the exception of the excavation the construction was carried on by forces of the company. Excavation was started in the middle of March, the first concrete was poured July 16, erection of the steel building started Oct. 30, and the unit was com pleted and operating Dec. 30. The unit has a capacity of over 24,001 tons of ore per day, and cost more than a million dollars. Remodeling of the primary-roll unit extended over a period of years preceding this some of the work having been done as early as 1918. Delivery of Ore from Mine, Yard Storage, and Handling Ori Cars to and from Primary Crushing Plant The ore is transported, in steel cars of 80 tons capacity, from the min' to the mill, where a reserve tonnage of loaded cars is maintained. Malle locomotives, handling trains of 45 cars, or approximately 3600 tons o ore per train, deliver the trains to a storage yard which contains thre tracks—a passing track and two storage tracks. All of this trackage i equipped with an overhead trolley system, so that electric locomotive can be used in yard switching. The storage tracks have a total length of 4500 ft. and provide storag space for 140 cars. The passing track, besides permitting switchin room for locomotives, is used for storage purposes between train arrivals thus giving intermittently a total storage capacity for the yard of approxi mately 200 cars. The resultant embrittlement caused by the exposure of oxygen-bearing copper when hot and exposed to reducing gases has been the subject of many studies.' Little attention, however, has been given to the possible embrittling effects due to atmospheres or conditions that under some circumstances might be the source of a reducing gas. At rather infrequent intervals there occur reports of copper becoming embrittled during normal annealing cycles in commercial steam-atmos-phered furnaces such as customarily are used for this operation. As might be expected, several other factors exist—such as oil, dirt on the wire, or in the furnace, or metallic surface contacts—that might produce reducing gases and be the source of the trouble. However, in consideration of the statement made by Ruder,2 it would seem that under some conditions steam itself might prove to be the source of trouble. A consideration of the amount of the dissociation of water vapor up to temperatures of the melting point of copper shows that3 the amount of hydrogen that could come from this source is far too minute to account for any embrittlement. What such information does not tell is what will happen at the surface of copper when subjected to steam at elevated temperatures, for entirely different conditions may persist, which would account for Ruder's observation. Furthermore, there are no data as to what might happen at the surfaces of other materials present, the resultant of which might affect the condition of the copper present. For this reason, it was decided to make a series of experiments comparable to those previously conducted by the writer,' which would clarify the effect of the steam on copper, and in copper in the presence of steel. Material The material used in these experiments was tough-pitch copper wire of rectangular cross section, about % in. thick, picked at random from the regular factory production of material used for windings, etc., in the electrical industry. The writer is continually asked, if this electricity:is all you claim for it, why do not the mines put it in and use it? The best answer was given by Mr. John Fox Tallis, in his paper read before the South Wales Institute of Engineers in 1888, namely, that the reasons are similar to those which have prevented the more general employment of other systems of haulage. Managers, as a rule, are " not experienced mechanical engineers; neither are they all versed in electrical engineering." It may be said that there are a number of " able and practical electrical engineers who could do the work; but those electrical engineers are not conversant with the practical routine of colliery work and are, therefore, placed at a disadvantage by not knowing the actual requirements of mining engineers, and the many little difficulties to be met and contended with in underground workings; and, until mining engineers have acquired the necessary knowledge and a confidence in electricity, it is only natural that they will continue to follow the beaten path." In the above remarks, Mr. Tallis has hit the nail on the head. In the face of the partial failure, financially, of the haulage-plant which the Union Electric Company of Philadelphia had set to work at Lykens Valley, Pa., an electric haulage-plant was installed near Scranton, Pa. The question was not whether electricity could do the work, but whether any electrical company knew enough about the practical difficulties to attack and overcome them. That point being settled, the remainder was easy. The contract for the Erie Colliery haulage-plant was signed in January, 1889. This colliery is owned by the Hillside Coal and Iron Company, Mr. Samuel Hines, President, and Captain W. A. May, Superintendent. The company has been using arc-lamps in its breakers for three years. THE study of the plastic deformation and recrystallization of metals has been the subject of many investigations. In regard to the simple deformational processes, such as tension and compression, the early knowledge gained from studies of polycrystalline material has been supplemented by many significant researches on the behavior of single crystals. Unfortunately, this has not been true for more complicated deformational processes. As far back as 1927, G. I. Taylor1 wrote: It is impossible in the present state of knowledge to do more than give a possible reason why (face-centered cubic) crystals set themselves with a (110) direction in the plane of rolling, and at right angles to the direction of rolling. The explanation of why the orientation of the crystal axes round the transverse direction is what it is, must be left till the distortion of metals, and particularly single crystals of metals in the process of rolling, has been studied in greater detail. That this gap in the systematic study of deformation and recrystalliza-tion has not yet been filled was indicated by C. H. Samans,2 who wrote in 1934 that "only four investigations upon cold-rolled single crystals of any of the face-centered cubic metals have been reported in the literature." Of these four studies, only those of S. Tanaka3 and T. Sakao,4 both of whom worked with aluminum crystals, had quantitative significance. The other two, carried out by F. Wever5 and W. G. Burgers,6 were of a. qualitative nature. It is our hope that the present investigation may contribute some-thing to the knowledge necessary for a rationalization of the origin of rolling textures in terms of the known behavior of single crystals, and may add pertinent information concerning the recrystallization characteristics of deformed single crystals.

MoRe than two years ago, in making efficiency tests on our hot-blast stoves, I was surprised to discover a marked difference in temperature as indicated by a pyrometer inserted near a stove on blast, and the regular recording instrument situated near the bustle pipe. A special hole was then provided at the junction of the hot-blast main and the bustle pipe, and portable pyrometers with bare fire ends were used, both at this point and in the stove necks. I had occasion to make a number of such tests on various stoves on the same, furnace, the difference in temperature as shown by the two pyrometers varying chiefly with the temperature of the blast, and the distance of the stove from the furnace. However, this difference was always great, often averaging above 100" F., for the entire period of a stove on blast. Later, experiments were made with similar results on another group of stoves. The pyrometers used were properly standardized and checked against each other before and after each test. However, there was still a slight doubt as to the accuracy of the results obtained, as subsequently explained. But I have obtained corroboration of the magnitude of heat losses from blast-furnace hot-blast mains from two independent sources. I have learned from H. A. Brassert, Superintendent of Blast Furnaces, South Works, Illinois Steel Co., that he has recently done some experimental work similar to my own, and found temperature drops of the same order of magnitude. Also, C.,R. Lyle, of the Armstrong Cork Co., has made some interesting theoretical calculations, based on the thermal conductivity of fire brick, for the particular conditions of several of our tests; and his theoretical interpolations, all facts being considered, check our actual observations fairly well. I understand that Mr. Lyle expects to publish the results of his investigations. The manufacture of charcoal in kilns was declared many years ago, after a series of experiments made in poorly constructed furnaces, to be unprofitable, and the subject is dismissed by most writers with the remark that in order to use the method economically the products of distillation, both liquid and gaseous, must be collected. It is asserted with truth that the number of kilns required for a large production of iron would be so great that it is doubtful whether any works would be justified in making the necessary outlay for their constructiou, but it can also be asserted with equal truth that for any such production in a given locality the use of charcoal as fuel would be eqnally unjustifiable. It appears to have been forgotten that there were other manufactures besides iron in which large amounts of charcoal were used, but these consumers seen] to have been guided entirely by the results of the experiments of the iron men, who necessarily made the largest qnantity of it. Some authors speak in a doubtful way of the quality of the charcoal produced, and a few concede that with great care good charcoal can he made in kilns, but that most of the workmen do not like kiln 'charcoal. This is the real secret of the opposition to this method of manufacture. Most of these objections were written when charcoal was the most important fuel used by the iron manufacturer, and when what was a largeproduction of iron for several furnaces was less than that produced by a single modern one, in localities where other fuels can be had. Almost all that has been written on the subject related to the use of the fuel for the manufacture of iron in the blast furnace, where very peculiar properties are required, and where the qnantity produced is limited by the height of the furnace, and this in turn by the crushing resistance of the charcoal. A large production was, therefore, only possible when the best and hardest woods were used. Of all these objections there is not a single one which is not eqnally applicable to any method of charcoal manufacture, whether it be meilers, pits, or furnaces. Of late considerable experimental and theoretical interest has been shown in the rates of transformation from a single phase, usually a supercooled solid solution, into one or more phases. Such reactions may involve both diffusion and transformation of the major constituent, as in iron alloys, or it may simply involve diffusion, as in superstructure formation and in age-hardening systems. Most of the work has been confined to ferrous alloy1-9† although two investigations have been made on copper alloys10*". That such work may be of considerable practical importance has been demonstrated by Bain12, by the workers at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut fur Eisen-for~chung'13, 14, and by the everyday use of precipitation and age-hardening principles15. Experiments in this country have generally followed Davenport and Bain's technique of rapid supercooling followed by isothermal treatment. In Germany16, 17 the work has been extended to the study of the influence of accurately controlled and measured rates of cooling. The work on steel indicates that there are two subcritical temperature ranges where reaction starts sooner after quenching and proceeds at a more rapid rate than at other temperatures. At suberitical temperatures above Ar" (temperature of martensite formation) where reaction is dependent upon atomic migration there is a period of time of which the length depends upon the alloy content and the temperature, before which no reaction has been detected. Davenport and Bain' find that different sorts of atoms in solid solution in gamma iron affect the length of this " prereaction" period differently, manganese probably being the most effective in lengthening it. It is very difficult to believe that nothing occurs within these "prereaction" regions, for if this were so there is no reason why any reaction at all should be observed. This paper outlines a series of tests carried out during the first six months of 1927, in the laboratory and mill of the Moctezuma Copper Co. The object of the tests was to determine whether the soluble salts present in the mill circuit water were having a detrimental cffect on the recovery made by flotation. To accomplish this object a series of water analyses were made, followed by flotation experiments in which definite quantities of the salts found were added as addition agents. Before proceeding to describe the results obtained in the course of the investigation, reference will be made to five articles that have appeared during the last two years in which the action of such salts is discussed. Two of these are by A. T. Tye1, 2 and describe flotation practice at Cananea and the way in which water high in ferrous and ferric salts is conditioned for differential flotation. Two, one by A. C. Munro and H. A. Pearse3 and the other by H. A. Pearse,4 outline Britannia milling methods, and the advantages that have been derived from ore washing; while in the fifth, A. W. Hahn5 summarizes the results of laboratory experiments in which ferrous, ferric and aluminum sulfates have been added in varying amounts. The mill of the Moctezuma Copper Co. has a daily capacity of 3000 tons, and is situated about 75 miles south of Douglas, Arizona, on the Rio de Nacozari, in the Mexican state of Sonora. The ore treated is mined from the company's mine at Pilares, about 5 miles southeast of the Concentrator. This ore contains about 2.5 per cent. copper— present almost entirely as chalcopyrite—and 10 per cent. iron, of which

The hammer drill rightly receives the credit for having made the one-man drill possible, and so many economies seem possible through the proper application of :different types of hammer drills to various mining, quarrying, and, excavating operations, that an indication of the economies effected by the New Jersey Zinc Co. at its Franklin mines may be of pertinent interest. When this company commenced its trials of hammer drills in 1907, these tools had not I been developed to one-fourth the capacity and refinement which they have at present. At that time it was frequently stated that such a small tool, drilling holes of less diameter than the reciprocating rock drill, could not drill enough holes in a shift to permit the placing of sufficient explosive to break a tonnage of ore comparable with that produced by the"' rock drills;" that the placing of small holes inclined upward, at angles steeper than 40° above the horizontal, could not be expected to produce results equal to the large flat, wet or dry, holes in the breasted back of an overhand stope, and would only shatter the ground so as to make the back unsafe. In' spite of these adverse opinions, the hammer drills first showed their superiority over both heavy and light reciprocating drills in raising and in stoping, and then in drifting and quarry work. As a result, all of the reciprocating drills at the Franklin mines were scrapped, three years ago, all of the mining work being accomplished with increased efficiency, as shown in detail in this article. With the advent of the hammer drill in this property, it was considered advisable to make comparative tests of all the tools accessible, and it has since been the policy to investigate the merits of any advance of the drilling art in order to get the maximum amount of work from the tools. The necessity of devising some means of standardizing drill tests, and of measuring the consumption of compressed air as well as the drilling speed, was early realized.

THE problem of the proper size and capacity of the open-hearth furnace has been a predominant issue ever since its inception some sixty years ago. The original furnaces, built in 1868 at Landore, England, were only to 3 to 4 tons capacity, and from' this there has been a steadily increasing and almost uniform rate of expansion until furnaces producing 300 tons are in successful operation today. At the end of the first half of this 60-year period, or about the year 1900, 50-ton furnaces we're common. Up to this time the problems of expansion had been largely those relating to suficient capital and the engineering development of larger units. But as 75, 100-ton and larger furnaces were proposed apprehension grew and other questions assumed leading consideration.

These are especially serious when valuable surface improvements may be badly damaged. ZINC metallurgists continue to follow with keen interest reports of successful results from the continuous retort plants at Palmerton, Pa., and Meadowbrook. W. Va. The new process had already demonstrated its ability to reduce the lead content of the metal and to effect savings in labor and fuel. The past year has shown that the retorts themselves can he built to last long enough so that the retort cost per ton of metal is lower than in past practice with small horizontal re- torts. A number of the latest type of retorts are reported to have been in continuous operation for over 18 months without a failure and are said to be still in good condition. This seems a complete answer to the last question which remained before continuous zinc smelting could he pronounced commercially practicable.

INTRODUCTION SINCE 1921, when Hull' discovered that cobalt can exist in the face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed modifications, the transitions that occur in cobalt have been extensively studied. It is generally agreed that on heating the hexagonal lattice changes to the cubic structure at temperatures ranging from 400 to 500°C although considerable doubt exists as to the exact temperature. Data concerning the temperature of the transformation on cooling are much less concordant and their interpretation has not been satisfactory. The study is further complicated by the fact that many investigators have reported the existence of a high temperature allotropic change in the range 850 to 1020°C, at which the cubic lattice reverts to the hexagonal modification. The transition on cooling, which has been reported as occurring at various temperatures from approximately 400 to 100°C, is of particular interest. Troiano and Greninger2 have recently suggested and considered the possibility of allotropic transformations occurring in pure metals by a shear-type, diffusionless (martensite) transformation. The case of cobalt was specifically discussed and certain observations of previous investigators evaluated in terms of this type of transformation. Table 1 briefly outlines the methods and results of previous investigators of the transformation temperatures of cobalt. MATERIALS AND METHODS The major portion of this investigation was performed with cobalt sheet containing a total of 0.2 pct impurities with carbon present to the extent of 0.1 pct. After melting in an induction furnace under an atmosphere of hydrogen, the carbon content analyzed 0.03 pct. Some observations were repeated with hydrogen reduced cobalt compresses analyzing 99.9 pct pure. No significant variations in results were observed employing the as-received sheet, the remelted stock, or the cobalt compresses. Filings for X ray diffraction analysis were sealed in evacuated glass ampoules. Pyrex glass tubing was used for temperatures below 600°C and for higher temperatures clear fused quartz was satisfactory. After appropriate heat treatment at various temperatures, the specimen ampoules were furnace cooled, air cooled or quenched by crushing under distilled water. This allowed a range of cooling velocities from less than one degree C per sec to greater than 1,000°C per sec. A good place to look for elephants is in elephant country, and old mining districts are certainly elephant country as far as minerals are concerned. In many areas probably more ore is still in the ground than has been taken out. The old timers were good miners and hard workers and when they left ore behind, it was usually for good reason; but many an old mining district has been revived by new approaches to old problems, taking advantage of new techniques and new equipment. One of these is the Front Range mineral belt of Colorado, which has produced minerals for the past 100 years through the ups and downs of mineral prices and the general economy. Gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc have been found in abundance in the complex sulfide veins of the area. Between Idaho Springs and Central City lie several strong veins which have been mined successfully in the past. The two strongest of these veins, striking northeast-southwest, (Lake-Bald Eagle), and northwest-southeast, (Crown Point-Belman) , and dipping northeast and northwest, respectively, intersect in a flat X near the head of Virginia Canyon. From the lowest drainage of the area, Clear Creek Canyon, the old timers drove the Central, or Big Five, haulage-drainage tunnel due north. It intersects the two veins 8460 ft from the portal and 1670 ft below the surface. The two veins were mined successfully at the surface and at the tunnel level. Without an opening to the surface at the in- side end of the tunnel, ventilating became very difficult as the stopes were opened up, and mining ceased in 1929. Vertically, 1200 to 1600 ft of virgin ground remains in the veins.
