THE effect of mining in the red-ore mines of the Birmingham district has been observed for some time, but, except in a few localities, little difficulty has been experienced from disturbance of cover. Cave-ins near the outcrop and fracturing of the surface at greater distances are the most pronounced manifestations of disturbance, while limited areas at points distant from the outcrop and under greater depth of cover have actually subsided. There is no doubt but that in time, because of failure of pillars, extensive fracturing and widespread settlement of the surface will result, particularly along the slope of Red Mountain, where mining has been under way for many years. Were it not that the orebed is overlain by one or more water-bearing formations, the fracturing or settlement of the surface would not be serious; but because of these formations, fracturing of the top rock may in itself be of sufficient importance to warrant the adoption of protective measures. Until development openings and surface plants are transferred to Shades Valley, protection of the surface will probably not be considered imperative, as the area involved is not of particular value for agricultural or building purposes. Further, the collapse of pillars over a wide area may develop squeezes that, if not controlled, may jeopardize the integrity of the mines and necessitate a change in development, from slopes to vertical shafts, at a much earlier period than is now contemplated. The occurrence of heavy beds of strong tough materials at varying distances above the orebed make it doubtful whether any serious disturbance of the surface will be experienced at any considerable distance from the outcrop, although some settlement will probably take place. It is certain, however, that no great volume of water will enter the mines from fracturing of the Fort Payne chert bed, as this is known to be a compact and practically impervious formation beyond the leached zone. Not so much can be said, however, regarding other possible sources of water, as pervious beds and through faults that may be encountered in future mining operations.

[ ] DISCUSSION F A LORIA*-The method of testing gun steel for resistance to surface cracking described in this paper was restricted to the examination of small, rod-shaped specimens The writer would like to point out the importance of other factors in producing defects in forged and bored gun tubes which would not be apparent in this investigation because of the nature of )he test Actual section size would accentuate the possibility of internal wall (bore) defects arising from unequal expansion between the internal and external wall surfaces on firing, resulting in internal tearing Checks and tears on the inside walls arise from internal tensions and nonuniformity on cooling, but the internal tearing can be reduced by using alloys of low expansion and of good thermal conductivity so as to reduce the difference between the outer and inner wall surfaces Also, the possibility of the location of inclusion segregates within a machined gun tube becomes more likely than in a small test specimen The effect of these nonmetallics on gun life and performance is evident when one realizes that the inclusions are soft yet brittle They reduce the amount of plastic deformation which can take place before cohesive failure occurs Once localized fracture has occurred at the position of a chain of these inclusions, a sharp notch (crack) is formed which produces stress conditions more favorable to cohesive failure than to plastic deformation These cracks aid erosion by providing channelways for the explosive gases, eventually leading to the tearing out or spalling of blocks of metal Oxidation of the surface may be partly responsible for the change in the surface of gun steel during firing observed by the author The appearance of burn on the surface is an indication that high temperatures were reached on firing, resulting in a slight oxidation of the surface Since the color of the oxidized film depends on both temperature and time, a higher temperature is required for a given color to form when it is caused by explosive heat, which acts for only an extremely short time at a given spot, than when it is caused by ordinary tempering The cross section of the gun steel specimen, Fig 16, illustrates that the repeated firing temperatures were high enough to cause

IN two previous papersl,2 dealing with the carbon-oxygen reaction, and the simultaneous content of each, in liquid steel in the furnace, we have made use of the quantity 0[O], defined as the excess oxygen beyond what would be in equilibrium with carbon then present if the pressure of carbon monoxide were I atm,; that is, if [C] X [O] is taken as 0.00222, 0[O] = [O] - 0,00222/[C] where [O] is the percentage of oxygen by weight as measured by the method described earlier.' This quantity 0[O] proves to be substantially independent of carbon content over the range 0.08 to 1.2 per cent, as well as of the basicity of the slag, and is nearly always within the limits 0.015 to 0.025 per cent when the bath is boiling normally and is in what we have termed a steady state. Apparently it must be at least about 0.014 per cent before boiling occurs; but this threshold value seems to depend upon the ease of bubble formation at the metal-hearth interface, hence upon the condition of the surface of the hearth. In any case, 0[O], on the average, changes considerably following any disturbance of the bath, as by addition of ore. The present paper deals with the average changes in ?[O] level following addition of Spiegel or crop ends, or after procedures to promote stirring, or by tapping of the steel from the furnace. The observations were made on a large number of commercial heats, and consequently are subject to the influence of various disturbing factors; the results have the compensating merit of showing the consistency obtainable under the limitations imposed by practical operation. VARIABILITY OF EXCESS OXYGEN IN NORMAL OPEN-HEARTH OPERATION The preceding general statements refer to the average value of ?[O] particularly in heats that are boiling actively; on individual heats, which are less active, there may be a variable time lag between the disturbance and its effect, which complicates the interpretation of what is going on. For instance, if in the normal refining process boiling is sluggish, the slag usually is gaining oxygen from the gas phase above it, or from added ore, faster than it is losing oxygen to the metal; yet when the bath starts to boil vigorously, the opposite condition may prevail for some time. The consequence of this lag is a variation of ?[O], the interpretation of which in a single heat may not be immediately obvious, This condition is illustrated in Figs. I and 2. In Fig, I, ?[O] at the beginning of the test period was near the lower limit of its usual range (dashed lines) in the steady state as a consequence of the lime boil, which had ended about as indicated. The bath is now cold, carbon drop is slow, and the first small ore feed causes only a small rise in 0[O]; as the temperature rises and as lime dissolves in the slag, and the bath becomes more active, the

Fourteen 50-lb laboratory melts were investigated to determine the effect of uranium on the tenpering characteristics of loo-carbon (0.06 to 0.1 pct C) steels. It was found that uranium additions, particularly in the range 0.30 to 0.45 pct, enhanced the hardness and both ultimate and yield strength of the experivzental steels in the quenched and tempered condition. The structural and morphological chazges indicated that uranium retarded tempering of the tnartensite, thereby hindering the normal formation of polygonal ferrite formed in the late stages of tempering. The effect of this was to make possible the re-tension of the acicilar ferritic structure in the uranium-bearing' steels. The iraniuin-bearing steels also showed IVidnzanstatten-type growth of ferrite plates and had large prior austenite grains containing assenzblies of fine ferrite grains, mainly acicular in geometry. The fine-grained ferrite structure and the presence of more numerous and apparently smaller precipitates in the uranium-bearing steels are thought to he principally responsible for the itnproved tensile strength and hardness of the experinzental uranium-bearing steels. At ternperirzg temperatures above 455% (850'F) the ferrite in the higher-uraniun steels nzaintained acicularity and, hence, its strength and resistance to tempering. Uranium did not produce a secondary hardening peak. However, it retarded softening during the third stage of tempering because of its effect of inhibiting the grouth of cementite particles and of retaining the acicularity of ferrite plates. The resistance to coalescence accounted for the slow grocth of the ferrite grains in the uranium-modified steels and, hence, fov the persistence of the acicular ferrite structure. IT had been found previously1 that uranium additions up to about 0.45 pct had no significant effect on the tensile properties of low-carbon steel (0.06 to 0.10 pct C) in the as-rolled and normalized conditions, Fig. 1. On the other hand, it was observed that uranium in excess of about 0.30 pct had an embrittling effect as revealed by Charpy V-notch impact results. It was also noted that, as the uranium content increased, the morphology of pearlite changed from lamellar to feathery and the ferrite grains showed an etching effect resembling striated or dashed markings, suggestive of precipitation. The sharp drop in the impact properties shown in Fig. 2 warranted an assumption that the uranium content of about 0.30 to 0.45 pct may produce some secondary hardening reaction on tempering, analogous to that associated with a Cr-Mo-V steel, which shows very poor CVN toughness at the secondary hardness peak in the tempering curve.1' With this background and the reported findings of Hasegawa and noda that low-carbon uranium-treated steel showed signs of secondary hardening, the present investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of uranium additions on the mechanical properties of 0.10 pct C steels. No attempts were made to investigate in detail the mechanisms of hardening, although some suggestions based on the experiments are made. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES A series of 50-lb induction-furnace melts was made using AISI 1008 rimming steel billets as the melting stock. The melting, forging, and rolling techniques proven satisfactory in previous projects'-3 were employed as a guide for this investigation. The steel was deoxidized with aluminum (2 lb per ton) prior to the addition of high-purity uranium. The analysis of each melt is given in Table I. Properties were evaluated as a function of heat treatment and are presented in terms of hardness and tensile strength vs tempering temperatures. The variation of hardness with the tempering temperature was studied on the quenched and tempered specimens, some of which measured 0.50 by 0.25 in. diam and the others 0.40-in. cubes. Before quenching, the specimens were vacuum-sealed in glass tubes and normalized at 900°C (1650°F) for 20 min. Following this treatment, the sealed specimens were hardened by austenitizing at 955°C (1750°F) for 20 min and water quenching, and then tempered for 1 hr in the range 150 to 730°C

The Alligator Ridge gold deposits are located in northwest White Pine County at the southwest end of Alligator Ridge. Alligator Ridge is on the west side of Long Valley in the range of hills that separates Long and Newark valleys. The nearest population center is Ely, about 113 km (70 miles) to the southeast. Access to the Alligator Ridge gold mine from Ely is via US Highway 50 and the Long Valley Ruby Marsh Road. The latitude and longitude is approximately 39° 45' north and 116° 30' west. The Alligator Ridge gold deposits occur in the lower 61 m (200 ft) of the Mississippian-Devonian Pilot Shale formation, a laminated calcareous carbonaceous siltstone. The gold deposits contain carbonaceous, oxide, and jasperoid type gold ore. For more details on the geologic features of the deposits, see Schull, Sutherland, and Ilchik (in press). The discovery story of Alligator Ridge began in the spring of 1976 when the areas mapped as jasperoid on the 1:250,000 scale geologic map of White Pine County (Hose and Blake, 1976) were examined and sampled. Seventeen samples, about 23 kg (50 lb), were collected from an area about 0.65 km2 (0.25 sq mile). Of these 17 samples 10 reported atomic absorption values of less than 0. 1 ppm Au and 7 reported values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm Au range. In June of 1976 20 lode claims were staked to claim the area of the rock chip sampling. The claims' end and side center lines were used as a grid for soil sampling. Sample stations were 91 m (300 ft) apart and sample lines were 229 m (750 ft) apart. The samples were sieved to - 180 µm (- 80 mesh). Out of 99 soil samples, seven samples reported Au values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm range. Of the seven auriferous samples, five were located over the jasperoid outcrops previously sampled; one over unmineralized Pilot Shale a few hundred m (ft) downslope from some Au-bearing jasperoid; and one from a 15 x 15 m (50 x 50 ft) talus outcrop area of hitherto unnoticed mineralized Pilot Shale. Subsequent sampling, mapping and drilling would show that this 15 X 15 m (50 x 50 ft) outcrop area was the top of the Vantage 1 ore body, about 1.27 Mt (1,400,000 st) of over 3 g/0.9 t (0.11 oz/st) Au. Late in the summer of 1976 about 30 more 1.4 to 2.2 kg (3 to 5 lb) rock chip samples were collected in the course of preliminary geologic mapping. This mapping and sampling showed that the gold-bearing jasperoids occurred at the contact between the Pilot Shale and the underlying Devils Gate Limestone. Rock chip samples of 0.1 ppm Au or greater were restricted to the jasperoids and the mineralized outcrop area of Pilot Shale located by the soil sample survey. Rock chip samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale were in the 3 to 5 ppm Au range. Activity resumed in the summer of 1977 with a more detailed soil geochemical survey. The jasperoid areas were defined as large geochemical gold anomalies of values greater than 0.1 ppm and locally greater than 0.2 ppm Au. Soil samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale outlined a greater than 0.1 ppm gold anomaly 61 x 152 m (200 x 500 ft) in size. Further geologic mapping showed that elsewhere, even where bleached and silicified, the Pilot Shale areas were geochemically very low in gold (less than 0.1 ppm Au). In November, 1977 twelve rotary percussion drill holes were drilled to test the gold-bearing jasperoid areas and the mineralized Pilot Shale area. Drilling of the jasperoid areas showed that the jasperoids gave way at shallow depths [less than 24 m (80 ft)] to unmineralized unaltered Devils Gate Limestone. Cylindrical magnesium single crystals were deformed in torsion. The axis of torsion was the basal pole. Five crystals were deformed to different strains between 0.08 and 1.03 and then sectioned in order to determine their dislocation densities using the transmission electron microscope. The work hardening rate of all specimens was at least an order of magnitude higher than that normally associated with easy glide in a tension test and comparable to that obserzed in stage B of a tension test. The correspondence between stage B in a tension test and the initial stages of a torsion test is believed to result from the fact that in both cases deformation occurs in a structure containing roughly equivalent densities of the dislocations associated with the three basal slip vectors. THERE are three basic ways of changing the shape of a crystal using slip dislocations. The crystal can be sheared along a slip direction in a slip plane; it can be bent about an axis in the slip plane normal to the slip direction; and, if the slip plane contains multiple slip directions, it can be twisted or rotated about the slip plane normal. Of the three processes, generally known as translational, flexural, and rotational slip, only rotational slip has not been extensively investigated. The object of the present research was to obtain basic information about this phase of crystalline plasticity. This paper is concerned with some aspects of the stress-strain curves obtained by twisting magnesium crystals about their basal poles. Magnesium was selected for four reasons. One, its recovery rate at room temperature is relatively low. Two, single crystals may be easily grown. Three, at room temperature the critical resolved shear stress for basal slip is about two orders of magnitude lower than that for nonbasal slip, so that rotational slip might be expected to occur primarily by basal slip. Finally, relationships between flow stress, shear strain, and dislocation density have been determined for tensile deformation of magnesium crystals,' thereby providing a basis of comparison for the torsional results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Crystals were grown from 0.5 in. diam extruded sublimed magnesium rod furnished by the Dow Chemical Co. who reported that it contained in weight percent less than 0.0003 Al, 0.01 Ca, 0.01 Cu, 0.0012 Fe, 0.001 Mn, 0.0005 Ni, 0.003 Pb, 0.001 Si, 0.01 Sn, and 0.02 Zn, with the balance magnesium. All crystals were grown in a dried argon atmosphere using Jill-son's2 modified Bridgman technique. Two different methods were used to obtain crystals with the basal plane normal to the specimen axis. These included direct growth from seeds of the proper orientation, and spark machining (trepanning) of 0.5 in. diam cylinders from larger (1.5 in. diam) randomly grown crystals. The crystals thus produced were polished in a 20 pct HC1 water solution and then etched in a 1 pct HC1 water solution to develop etch pits lying in rows parallel to the basal plane trace. The crystals were then revolved about their axes on the stage of a low-powered microscope. Torsion specimens were prepared only from those crystals whose axes were normal to the rows of etch pits. It is estimated that this simple orientation method was accurate to about 51 deg. 1.625 in. long cylinders were next cut from these selected crystals and then acid machined in a 20 pct HC1 water solution into torsion specimens with a 1 in. long by 0.30 in. diam reduced gage section. Following this, they were annealed in air at 400°C and furnace cooled to room temperature. The specimens were given a final polish in a 10 pct HC1 water solution, rinsed in ethanol, dried, and cemented into brass grips with an epoxy resin. In addition to the torsion specimens, several tensile specimens with their basal planes at 45 deg to the stress axis were also prepared with similar dimensions except that the gage sections were increased to 4 in. in length. IN the early period of steelmaking, ingot structure and segregation were of no practical importance. Crucible melting required very small ingots that gave little segregation, and a small inserted hot top prevented pipe. As larger ingots were poured from bessemer converters and open-hearth furnaces, segrega- [ ] tion, piping, and gas evolution became increasingly important. The techniques of making semikilled and rimmed ingots were developed with little knowledge of the actual mechanism of the process. The first studies of solidification were made by the Brearleys1 and Gathmann,2- who used stearine to show the effects of shrinkage and mold shape. Fig 11-1 is a picture of a series of stearine ingots at various stages of solidification. These studies showed that the liquid solidifies at a nearly uniform rate from the sides and bottom of the mold and demonstrated the formation of

A PART of the material incorporated in this paper was derived from the studies of ancient metal objects examined by the authors from time to time for museums and art collectors, in order to verify the age of the metal. The data thus accumulated during several years was systemati-cally surveyed and supplemented by new material obtained in examina-tion of a set of specimens that had been generously donated by museums for this study. Altogether over 50 pieces were investigated, of which 39 are described in this paper. Every specimen is at least 1500 years old; the majority are considerably older. Exact conditions to which these bronze and copper objects were exposed in the ground are unknown, unfortunately. It is safe to say that exposure conditions did not remain constant during the long period of burial. Although the collection of specimens studied represents a wide variation in location and age of the objects, as well as in the nature and composition of the metals, it was found that fundamental changes in the metal structure were limited to a few typical cases which, therefore, may be considered as more or less general. The authors' chief aim was to study the effect of extremely long periods of corrosion on the structure of bronze and copper.

Anthracite was first mined in the Wyoming Valley and sold as an article of commerce in 1808. As some preparation has always been necessary to make it ready to burn, the preparation of anthracite must date back over a hundred years. Two vital factors have determined to a large extent the degree and the method of anthracite preparation. These are, first, the character of the beds worked and the methods by which they are mined and, second, the equipment used and practices followed in the burning of the coal. It is not the intention here to go deeply into these phases of preparation as a paper of no mean length could be prepared on the history of either. Rather, the intention here is to point out the main considerations and to show the influence they have exerted on the preparation of anthracitc. Mining Methods and Their Relation to Preparation In the beginning of the nineteenth century, the coal beds were virgin with the possible exception of some outcroppings that had been worked, to a slight extent, by the Indians. It is known that the American aborigines had a, knowledge of the use of this fuel, because when the Wyoming Valley was purchased from them, in 1754, they mentioned the fact that, by selling the land, they would lose their coal. Real mining of anthracite began about 1808 when Judge Jesse Fell, of Wilkes-Barre, discovered that the "common stone coal of the valley" could be burned in an open grate. For some years thereafter mining was conducted near the surface. The working p1aces were driven narrow; only the best of the coal was selected and the remainder was left in the ground. Only the lumps could be used, as no market existed for other sizes. As time passed, however, it became necessary either to go farther into the ground or to widen the working places. Last year's review was characterized as a year of politics and began an era of legislation. The 1972 review can be similarly characterized, with even more rigid health and safety regulations and environmental legislation. The mining industry should be aware of what's happening in the nuclear power and other fields as a result of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, where the environmental impact of most major construction activities are already under close scrutiny. Section 102 of NEPA requires that all federal agencies include a detailed statement on specified environmental conditions as part of every report on proposed actions significantly affecting the quality of the human environment. All such environmental reports must consider the same general conditions: • The environmental impact of the proposed action. • Any adverse environmental effects which cannot be avoided should the proposal be implemented. • Alternatives to the proposed action. • The relationship between local short-term uses of man's environment and the maintenance and enhancement of long-term productivity. • Any irreversible and irretrievable commitments of resources which would be involved in the proposed action should it be implemented.

Two distinct types of defects occur at times in copper wire as a result of the use of dies of improper design or undesirable wire-drawing practice. The conditions under which these defects may be produced, as well as precautions to be taken in order to prevent them, have been known to The American Brass Co. for many years. The quality of the copper wire bars and rods has too often and unjustly been held responsible for these particular defects and it is to correct any such belief that this paper is presented. An extremely high quality of electrolytic copper has been supplied to the trade by all refineries for the last 20 years at least. The purity of the copper would average well above 99.900 per cent. The casting of the wire bars has been handled in a generally satisfactory manner. The bars have been cast sound, with a flat to slightly crowning set and have been free from sloppy edges, cold sets, etc. In other words, the wire bars have met A. S. T. M. specifications and have been generally satisfactory. For the most part, they have been everything that could be desired from a quality standpoint yet most of the wire mills in this country and in Europe have at times held the quality of the copper responsible for the two types of defects described in this paper. As a matter of fact, these defects are produced entirely in the wire mills. The author has visited many of the large wire mills in the United States and in Europe to investigate these defects. In some cases the trouble has been so serious that the wire mill has ceased operations. At times the wire mills are reluctant to believe that they are responsible for the defective product. The effect of die design, wire-drawing practice, etc., upon the quality of copper wire has received little study on the part of wire mills, particularly those that have commenced operations in the last few years. Two Types of Defects One type of defect is generally known in this country as "check marks;" in Europe it is termed "crowfeet" (Fig. 1). SINCE 1915 many papers and books have covered industrial applications of X-rays from various angles. Two of the more recent are a paper by Fink and Archer1, which describes in detail the technique of radiography, and a paper by Clark2, which embraces the whole field of X-ray metallography. This paper, therefore, is confined to work of the X-ray Laboratory of the Western Electric Co., which naturally divides into two categories: radiography and diffraction patterns of various types.

Creep rates have been measured for nickel at 1200°F in air and in vacuum, and related to the depth of surface cracks in the specimens tested in the two environments. The surface cracks were observed to grow faster in air than in vacuum in both short-time and long-time tests. Crack depths, however, could be correlated with creep rates only in the short-time tests. Although no cracks were observed in a relatively brittle Ni-Cr-A1 alloy creep tested at 1300°F, the appearance of alloy specimens fractured after interruption in creep indicated that there was a decrease of intergranular cohesion resulting from the diffusion of atmospheric gases into grain boundaries. PREVIOUS investigations1-3 have demonstrated that the effect of atmosphere on the high-temperature strength of nickel and nickel-base alloys may be reversed by changes in the stress or temperature of the test. At high stress and low temperature the creep-rupture life is longer in vacuum than in air, while at high temperature and low stress the relative strengths are reversed. A mechanism to explain this behavior was proposed based on two competing processes. Oxidation hardens and strengthens a metal, but adsorption of gas, by lowering surface energy, reduces the work required to propagate an intergranular crack. The controlling process is determined by temperature and stress. Basic to this mechanism is the concept that environment determines the ease of propagation of intergranular cracks and thus affects creep rate and rupture life. To explore the mechanism in greater detail, this investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of atmosphere on crack initiation and propagation rates in nickel1 and a relatively brittle Ni-Cr-A1 alloy.3 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The materials were the same as used previously. Nickel of 99.8 pct purity had the following impurity content: 0.02 pct Co, 0.03 pct Fe, 0.02 pct Mg, 0.03 pct Si, and 0.008 pct C. Rods were cold swaged from 1/2 in. to 3/8 in. in diam and machined into speci- mens with gage sections 1/4 in. in diam by 1-1/4 in. long. They were annealed in vacuum at 1600" F for 1 hr to achieve a grain size of 0.07 mm. The alloy was composed of 19.1 pct Cr, 3.6 pct Al, 1.7 pct Si, 0.57 pct Fe, 0.10 pct Mg, 0.027 pct C, 0.004 pct S, and the balance Ni. Sheet specimens of 0.500-in. width and 1.25-in. gage length were machined from 0.033-in.-thick strip and annealed in vacuum at 2000° F for 2 hr, resulting in a grain size of 0.036 mm. Large amounts of an intergranular phase were introduced as a result of the anneal. Creep tests on both materials, using equipment previously described by Shahinian; were conducted in air and in a vacuum of 1 x 10-5 mm Hg. They were continued to rupture and interrupted at various stages of the test. Although extensions were measured from dial gage readings of movement of the lever arm, it is considered that valid comparisons of creep rate may be made in this manner.l Two parameters were measured metallograph-ically* on longitudinal sections of nickel specimens interrupted during creep—the mean depth of surface cracks 2, and the density n as the number of cracks per unit length of surface. They were combined into one parameter by the relation p = n-d [1] As used here, p is equal to the total of crack depths per unit length of surface. RESULTS Nickel. The extraction of gold and silver from ores with alkaline cyanide solutions is well known. Cyanide solutions are also good solvents for many base metal minerals, particularly most of the copper minerals. Leaver and Woolf,1 who determined the solubilities of copper minerals in 0.10 pct sodium cyanide solution, showed that malachite, cuprite, chalcocite, and bornite are readily soluble in cyanide; least soluble are chalcopyrite and chrysocolla. The Mining Chemicals Laboratory of American Cyanamid Co. has studied the possibilities of using cyanide solutions for leaching base metals. In this article the authors present the results of their experiments with cyanide leaching to reduce the copper content of a zinc concentrate from 0.050 pct to the desired specification of less than 0.02 pct. Zinc Ore Sample: The sample of commercial zinc ore used in this investigation to produce zinc concentrates was ball mill feed ranging from 1/2 in. to fines. The ore was crushed to —10 mesh and riffled into 600-g charges for zinc flotation. Analysis revealed 4.54 pct Zn and 0.005 pct Cu. Examined microscopically, the ore consisted essentially of cream-colored sphalerite and carbonate gangue. It contained a small amount of pyrite, partly tarnished. The only copper mineral identified was chalcopyrite, mostly smaller than 20µ, some of which occurred as attachments on sphalerite. Flotation Procedure: Batches of zinc concentrates were made as required according to the following general procedure. A 600-g charge of —10 mesh ore was ground for 4 min at 60 pct solids in a laboratory steel rod mill. Screen sizing showed it to be all —35 mesh with 42 pct —200 mesh. The pulp was transferred to a Fagergren laboratory flotation machine, diluted to 25 pct solids and conditioned for 5 min with 0.6 lb per ton CuSO4, . -5H2O. It was then conditioned with 0.10 lb per ton Sodium Aerofloat promoter and floated for 5 min with pine oil as frother and creosote as froth stiff-ener. The pH during flotation was 8.5. A typical analysis of zinc concentrate subjected to leaching is 44.41 pct Zn and 0.051 pct Cu. The ratio of concentration was close to 10 to 1. Leaching Procedure: Aero Brand cyanide, technical calcium cyanide analyzing 49.5 pet NaCN equivalent, was used for all cyanide leaching tests. For each test three rougher concentrates floated as described were combined (total weight close to 180 g) and the water content adjusted to 150 ml. The percent solids in the pulp was thus 55. After a weighed amount of cyanide flakes had been added, the pulp was agitated on rolls for a given period, then filtered and washed. Filtrate and washed concentrate were assayed for copper content. The procedure for ammonia leaching was similar to the cyanide process. A series of tests was run in which the effects of ammonia as a solvent for copper in the zinc rougher concentrate were investigated. In each test 180 g of zinc rougher concentrate was leached with 150 ml of ammonia solution. Various strengths of ammonia and times of leaching were investigated. The results are shown in Table I. It is apparent that ammonia was a poor solvent for copper in the zinc concentrate; 60 min of agitation with a relatively strong NH:, solution extracted only 2 pct of the copper. CYANIDE LEACHING TESTS Effect of Solution Strength: The solvent effects of 0.125, 0.187, and 0.250 pct NaCN equivalent solutions were compared for leaching periods of 15 min. Residue and filtrate were assayed for copper content. The copper content of the filtrate plus wash was calculated back to the original volume of cyanide solution (150 ml). The effects of cyanide strength are given in Table II, It will be noted that 15 min leaching with 0.25 pct NaCN equivalent solution extracted 74.6 pct of the copper in the zinc concentrate. The object of this paper as to show that the structural composition of an alloy may be found by the planimetric measurement of the total area occupied by each of the constituents on a few representative photomicrographs of this alloy. When the area is determined the volume and the proportional weight of the constituent may be calculated. This method has been used for the determination of the structural composition of binary eutectics and other binary alloys with known constituents; also the composition of unknown constituents in binary alloys. The accuracy of the method is. high enough to justify its application to metallographic problems instead of the chemical analysis. THIS work has for its purpose the establishment of a new method for determining the structural composition of alloys. The area occupied by a constituent on a few representative photomicrographs of the alloy is measured, by a planimeter, especially designed for metallographic work, and the volume and proportional weight of the constituent calculated. Experiments have shown that 'the results are accurate enough to justify the application of the method to many problems in metallographic research instead of chemical analysis. The advantage of the method is the possibility, of determining the amount of the constituents with-out separating them from the alloy; their composition may also be determined if the ultimate chemical analysis of the alloy is known. Alluvial gold was first discovered in Guiana in 1852, in the sands of the Arataye river, by Paulino, a Braziliaii convict. During the following years, gold was found also in the rivers Orapu, CirubQ, etc. In 1873 the famous placers of the Sinnamary system were opened: Saint-Elie, Dieu-Merci, Adieu-Vat, and Couriege. This group of mines has produced nearly $10,000,000, according to official records, not including the gold that escaped the taxes. The discoverer was a mulatto named Vitalo. Except in a few rich spots, the gold was rather evenly distributed along the creeks. In one instance, gold was found in the red dirt from the slope of a hill, which, after transport to the creek, gave an amount of 150 kilograms. The placers of the Mana system, Enfin, Elysee, Pas-Trop-Tot, date from 1878, and their production has been about %g5,000,000. In 1888, the Awa placers, along the boundary bet.ween the French and Dutch Guianas, on the Maroni and its tributaries, were discovered. They have yielded $12,000,000. The only industrial company, the Dutch Guiana Freiich Minillg Co., produced in 15 years about 2,500 kg. of gold, worth $1,500,000. From 1893 dates the famous Carsewene discovery, in territory then in dispute between France and Brazil. A settlement was made recently in favor of Brazil, by arbitration of the Switzerland State Council. Carsewene is said to have produced about $18,000,000 in six years (1894-1900), but not even one-fourth of tho production went through French Quiana and
