BOWIE, San Francisco, Cal.-In my work with the U.S. Bureau of Mines, I have been detailed to report on oil storage containers, and in going around the country I have, been much interested in, the possibilities in the use of concrete for such containers. In talking with a good many people, I have discovered that concrete is being used A good deal for a wide variety of oils ranging from 14° to as high as 40° Bé., especially, by some of the western railroads:, If any member has had experience, in storing gasoline in concrete, I should like to learn of it. Geological Survey, acid connected with the Gypsy Oil Co., until a short time ago, has invented a invented a method for the application of concrete to the storage not only of crude oil but of refined products:. The Cosden Oil Co., of Tulsa, is now working on that plan, and, expects to store refined products in concrete tanks. THE CHAIRMAN (I.N. KNAPP, Ardmore Pa.).-I have had considerable experience in building masonry tanks for gas Holders. I do not believe it is possible to build a concrete or masonry tank of any kind. With hydraulic cement, mortar, which will be absolutely water-tight, unless the bottom and inner wall, after completion are waterproofed with some impervious material. The same will be true of oil tanks, the bottom and inner face of which must be made impervious to oil. Masonry tanks are intended to be sunk in the ground. All that the wall of the tank then amounts to is a retaining wall to keep the excavation in shape and to receive an impervious coating. The bottom of, a; tank, when empty, must be protected by a relief valve from any hydraulic: pressure acting from below. At ordinary prices, for sheets, a tank 100 ft. diam by 20 ft. deep can be built of steel much quicker and cheaper than of masonry. Several years, ago I saw very large oil storage tank under construction in California the bottom and sides being concrete. The sides were, sloped at about the single of repose for the material excavated: If you build a steel oil tank, you can get. .men for the work who do nothing else, and you, are likely to get a satisfactory job; but if you wish to build a concrete or masonry tank it is almost: impossible to find men skilled in building absolutely water-tight masonry Work. In 14-karat gold alloys, as in 10-karat gold alloys,3 the addition of such metals as zinc, nickel, copper and silver produces a wide range of physical and chemical properties such as color, hardness, corrosion resistance and melting points. These important factors made gold alloys desirable in the optical work and for jewelry. In 14-karat gold alloys, as well as in 10-karat or 12-karat, it is possible to have two golds of the same color, one of which will corrode more than the other, although it may be harder. Some of these alloys have been investigated by F. E. Carter,' E. M. Wise,= and L. Sterner Rainer.4 In this group of alloys the gold content of 58.3 per cent (14-karat) was held constant, while the copper varied from 36 to 24 per cent. The balance of the alloy consisted of one, two, or three of the metals silver, zinc, and nickel. All the alloys were melted in an induction furnace and cast into an ingot that measured 3 by 1/4 by 3/4 in. The method of determining the melting points, color determinations and acid test have been discussed in previous papers by the author.2, 3 It is necessary to use small test bars (Fig. I). The tensile bars were annealed at 1300oF. for 20 min. and then air-cooled. There being a very marked drop when the yield point was reached, "the drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point. Alloys Gold-copper.zilzc A~loys.—Gold-copper-zinc alloys melt, cast, and labricate easily. The low melting points, however, limit their use to some extent. The physical properties of these alloys are not entirely satisfactory. When the ultimate strength is satisfactory, the elongation and reduction of area are too low (Table I). Gold-copper-sinr-nickel A lloys.—In this group of alloys, in which zinc and nickel replace copper in approximately equal parts (Table I), the yield point, hardness, and ultimate strength increase with the increase of zinc and nickel content, while the reduction of area and elongation decrease. The physical properties are desirable, particularly of the white gold alloys. The alloys of this group are not difficult to cast and fabricate, and most of these colors could be used commercially. Gold-copper-nickel A lloys.—Gold-copper-nickel alloys are similar to the gold-copper-zinc and the gold-copper-zinc-nickel alloys. They do, however, possess high yield point, ultimate strength and hardness, somewhat higher than those of the other two groups mentioned (Table I). Geophysics differs from geology and physics in in many respects. In the first place, geophysics is a complex science embracing the fields of seismology, geomagnetism, geoelectricity, geodesy, meteorology, vol-canology, physical oceanography, physical hydrology, tectonophysics and exploration geophysics. Geology is also a complex science and so extensive in its various fields that no one can master them all, and no part of geology deals in any sense with several of these fields of geophysics. In the second place, geophysics makes use of methods and instruments that are derived primarily from the science of physics. Geology, on the other hand, has methods of its own and it draws its borrowed techniques and its instrumental equipment not only from physics but also and perhaps primarily from chemistry and biology. The difference, therefore, between the geophysicist and the geologist lies partly in the phenomena that are observed, partly in the methods and instruments with which each carries on his exploration; but partly also, and perhaps principally, in the habitual attitude of mind and in the background of specialized training with which each approaches the problems presented by this planet of ours. The geologist as such, therefore, is no geophysicist. On the other hand, the physicist is not a geophysicist either. Isolation of each problem in a closed laboratow system under complete control is fundamental to the methods of the physicist. The geophysicist must apply physical instruments and physicomathematical reasoning to the study of physical quantities in their undisturbed natural environment. What, then, is a geophysicist? In the sense that he is a trained expert in all of the geophysical sciences, I do not believe that such a person ever existed. It would be beyond the possibilities of a single lifetime. I think there is confusion in our ideas and in our use of terms. We are not all thinking of the same thing when we say geophysics or geophysicist; yet we seem to talk as though we were. It is as absurd to say that the whole of geophysics belongs to geology because the field of a particular type of geophysicist—the exploration geophysicist —calls for some knowledge of geology as it would be to say that the whole of biology belongs to geology because a particular type of biologist—the paleontologist— needs some knowledge of geology. Development of a Geophysicist Since it is impossible to become an expert in all the fields of geophysics, and since students entering college seldom know the field they will choose as a career, what would we suggest as the best general preparation for work in geophysics, whether as a meteorologist, an oceanographer, a seismologist, a geodesist, a geomagneticist, a volcanologist, a tectonophysicist, a hydro1 ogist, or an exploration geophysicistp we may distinguish five phases in the development of a geophysicist: (I) his mathematical and scientific studies in high school; (2) the general mathematical and scientific

THE purpose of mine-hoist safety controllers is to prevent hoists from being operated at speeds above those considered safe and expedient, to ensure proper acceleration and retardation near the ends of travel, and to prevent overwinding. In other words, they are to safeguard the normal speeds and movements of the hoisting drums and cages. The object of this paper is to explain the fundamental principles of hoist controllers, and to aid in their selection, installation, and maintenance. There have been many designs of mechanical hoist controllers, the basic elements of which as ultimately developed consisted of a flyball governor and another movable member supported by a frame and arranged to move in a vertical, horizontal, or rotary direction, depending upon the particular design, the whole mechanism arranged to be driven in synchronism with the hoist drum. In case of overspeeding, inadequate retardation, or overwinding, a pawl or catch controlled by the governor would engage teeth or dogs on the moving member, which through mechanical connections would cut off the power and set the brakes. Since in strictly mechanical hoist controllers valuable time was lost while the various mechanical movements took place, an important development was the invention of controllers partly mechanical and partly electrical. This type of controller has a governor and movable cams to be driven in synchronism with the hoist drum, the governor representing the hoist speeds and the cams profiled to form a pattern for retardation, representing the travel of the cages in the shaft. This type is also provided with an overspeed switch and usually with a pair of selective-limit switches, one for the top limit and the other for the bottom. In overspeeding or failure to retard in accordance with the profile of the cam, the overspeed switch will be opened, or if the top or bottom limit is overrun one of the limit switches will be opened, breaking the retaining circuit of a contactor or magnetic latch, causing the power to be cut off and the brakes applied. When the speed falls to the predetermined safe speed, the overspeed switch closes, and a hoist equipped with power-operated brakes controlled in emergency by a solenoid-operated valve can be restarted immediately by simply moving the master control lever to the "off" position and then applying power-unless brake interlocks are used, in which case the brake lever or levers must also be brought to the "applied" position, after which the hoist can be restarted in the usual way. When hand-reset weights instead of solenoid-operated mechanism are arranged to set the brakes for emergency, it is necessary to reset the weights manually, besides bringing the master control lever to the "off" position before the hoist can be restarted. Should a final limit be slightly overrun, and a stop made with a limit switch held open by a cam, it is necessary for the hoistman to use a "backing-out" switch which short-circuits the overrun limit switch, reestablishing the hoist-control circuit, and simultaneously opening the

WILLIAM GRIFFITH, Scranton, Pa.-I notice in the discussions and literature that emphasis is placed on rock dust, shale dust, and limestone dust, and I infer that these different. sorts of rock are ground up to produce this dust. -Is that right? MR. RICE.-That is correct, but we do not have to grind the limestone dust we are using in the experimental mine, as that is obtained from a quarry, and is used just as it comes; we can get it very cheaply, as it is a by-product of the quarries. MR. GRIFFITH.-Have any experiments been made with ordinary dirt out of the fields; could not that be used as ground dust? MR. RICE.-If you dry it and powder it enough so it will float in a, strong air current it might be all right for the barriers, but if it is damp there will be a tendency for it to mat together; then it would be quite useless for making a dust cloud. There might also be another disadvantage if used through the whole mine, if it had very much free silica in it, which is bad for the lungs. Limestone and selected shale dust would not affect the health of miners. MR. GRIFFITH.-In order to do very much good with any of those barriers, they ought to be rather extensively used throughout the mines, and there are few mines that have facilities for grinding up this rock into such a fine dust. If the ordinary earth from a plowed field could be used, even if it were not quite so good, it is more accessible and very much cheaper; therefore, in using it, with the universality of the supply through-out the country, it would tend to stop explosions. MR. RICE (communication to the Secretary*).-In closing, it is well to again emphasize that I do not advocate barriers being a "cure-all" for explosions. It will be generally agreed that prevention is best, not only by means of improved methods of using explosives, and ventilation to prevent accumulations of firedamp, but also by either thoroughly wetting the dust throughout the mine, or else so treating it with rock dust or other inert dust that an explosion cannot start. From my observations I believe that rock dusting. is a practicable method, and has the merit of visibility, and remaining effective for considerable periods, whereas the watering method has to be daily followed up, and if neglected for a short period the mine may become in a dangerous condition. SOME of the principal metallurgical difficulties en-countered in the differential flotation of lead-zinc-iron sulfide ores arise from the following causes: The oxidized, or partly-oxidized, condition of one or more of the minerals ; impurities in the minerals them-selves; composition and character of the gangue miner-als; soluble salts in the ore; and unfavorable metal ratios. In many of the ores received at a custom mill there are present appreciable amounts of oxidized' or partly-oxidized minerals, although the ores may be substantially sulfides. Often the ores are not oxidized at all when received but on account of operating condi-tions at the mill it is necessary to stock them for several months before they can be milled, and considerable oxi-dation takes place while they are lying in stock. In most ores received at Midvale, when oxidation is pres-ent, the lead and iron sulfides have been more affected than the zinc sulfide, but with some ores the zinc mineral has also become partly oxidized. Some ores, such as those taken from old mine-dumps or from old stopes, may show very little total oxidation, but the greater part of the valuable minerals has been sufficiently acted upon by oxidation to make the minerals very difficult to float. Ores of this character are among the most difficult the flotation operator has to contend with, be-cause the galena, sphalerite, and pyrite are all sluggish in their behavior in the flotation cells. Only a part of the lead mineral will float in the lead circuit. The re-mainder will lag badly and tend to come up with the zinc or, if badly oxidized, will go -through all the flota-tion circuits into the tailing. The zinc mineral, if it has also been affected by oxidation, will act in a man-ner similar to the lead mineral. A hard pull will be required to float a reasonable percentage of it, and this is likely to bring up so much pyrite that it will be difficult to make a zinc concentrate of commercial grade. If it happens that the zinc mineral has not been no-ticeably affected by oxidation it will tend to float in the lead circuit because a hard pull is also required in that circuit in order to bring up the sluggish galena. When only a fraction of the sulfide minerals has become partly altered, or completely oxidized mineral is present in relatively small quantity, it is usually possible to make reasonably clean concentrates of all three sulfides, that is, lead, zinc and iron concentrates. Most of the oxi-dized and semi-oxidized minerals will go into the tailing and the losses will be proportional to the oxidation.

It has long been known that mud properties affect drilling rate and that drilling with water is as much as six to .seven times faster than with mud. However, it is not known why drilling rates with mud are lower. Recent studies show what fluid properties govern microbit drilling rate and also provide a quantitative correlation of these fluid properties and hydraulics with microbit drilling rate. All the microbit tests reported in this paper were made with a low permeability (about 10 md) limestone. They were conducted at constant bit weight and rotary speed with varying fluid properties, flow rate Q and nozzle dinnteter d. The tests showed that (1) drilling rate in a given system with constant circulating rate and nozzle velocity is a function of the kinematic viscosity [viscosity /density, (cp)/ p (density)] of the drilling fluid measured at near bit nozzle shear rates; (2) the combined effect of fluid properties and hydraulics on microbit drilling rate is defined by a Reynolds number function (kQp/dp); (3) for the same kinematic viscosity, drilling rate is independent of solids content; and (4) for the same kinematic viscosity, drilling rate is independent of fluid loss. INTRODUCTION The fact that mudding up reduces rate of penetration is well known, but the reduction varies from well to well. The rate with mud may be 80 percent of the water rate or it may be as low as 15 percent. Since this reduction of up to seven-fold takes place under conditions of constant bit weight, rotary speed and mud circulating rate in a uniform formation, it can only be a result of the change in fluid properties. Previous work1-" both in field tests and in laboratory microbit tests) showed that drilling rate with mud is lower than with water (Figs. 1 and 2). Microbit tests also confirm, at least qualitatively, the field observation that drilling rate slows with increased pressure differential from borehole to formation (Fig. 3). The qualitative effect of drilling rate of bit weight, rotary speed and rate of mud circulation are also the same for the field and microbit rig. For these reasons, the industry generally accepts microbit results as being qualitatively meaningful in terms of field application.

With this issue of the Bulletin, the Institute puts into operation a plan which it has long had under consideration for enlarging its field of usefulness to its members. We refer to the Index to periodical literature bearing on mining, metallurgy, and related subjects, which will be found in the advertising section at the end of the Bulletin. The Index is printed on alternate pages so that anyone who desires to compile a card index can readily clip the items and paste them onto cards. By its affiliation with the Engineering Societies Library, the Institute possesses unexcelled facilities for the preparation of this Index, since practically every important engineering or technical paper published anywhere in the world is regularly received by the library. The items for publication in the Index are first selected by the library staff, but their final approval and their order of arrangement remains in the hands of the editor. A word should be said in explanation of the system of classification that has been adopted. It will be noted that the classification is extremely broad, no attempt having been made to gather the references into closely specialized groups. Our reason for breaking away from the modern tendency toward minute specialization is based upon the fact that the fundamental principles underlying all engineering are not by any means so diversified as has commonly been supposed. For example, it is not at, all unlikely that an engineer engaged in large-scale ore mining in the Southwest can profit by observing the methods employed by his colleagues in the Pennsylvania coal mines. It is notorious also how extensively the brotherhood of chemical engineers has profited by the. earlier experiences of the ore-dressing and metallurgical engineers. If the Index were minutely sub-divided, it would always be possible that the coal-mining engineer, for example, might fail to observe a most important paper because it happened to be listed tinder the head of iron mining. For this reason, mining practice in general is consolidated under one head. The same line of reasoning applies to other divisions as well. In order to make the Index of practical value to all members of the Institute, wherever they may be situated, the library will undertake to supply, for a nominal charge, an abstract, a translation, a typewritten copy, a photostat copy, or the original of any article in the Index. Requests for service of this character should be addressed directly to the Engineering Societies Library, 29 West 39th St., New York. Members are urged to cooperate toward the success of this new departure by sending us suggestions. Although every effort has been made to anticipate the wishes of the members, it is almost impossible to foretell what services may be most useful to our 7000 constituents. Furthermore, it is known that some men prefer one method of classification while others would find another method more convenient.

DURING recent months, the acute shortage of steel scrap has necessitated the use of higher percentages of hot metal in the open-hearth charge. With these higher percentages, the sulphur content of hot metal has become an increasingly important factor in the control of the quality of steel. Thus, the blast-furnace operator is faced with a demand not only for more output but for a higher quality of product. More than go per cent of the sulphur charged into the blast furnace is contained in the coke. With the tremendously increased demand, the trend of coke quality has been toward higher sulphur, higher and more variable ash, and poorer physical characteristics. This has been brought about by less selective coal mining, increased production rates in coke plants and resumption of operations of many beehive ovens. In a single month last year, one blast-furnace plant in the Pittsburgh district operated with coke obtained from 52 sources. The effect of variability and quantity of coke ash on blast-furnace operation is well known. The improved results obtained with furnaces operating on coke made from washed coals compared with results on coke made from raw coals is ample proof of the effectiveness of low and uniform ash. Coal-washing plants, however, require a large capital expenditure, and are impractical for most of the large number of small producers, whose operations are confined chiefly to periods of abnormally high demand. Furthermore, not all coals are physically adaptable to washing. PRINCIPLES OF IRON DESULPHURIZATION IN FURNACE Although investigations of the blast-furnace process have not clearly revealed the detailed mechanism of iron desulphurization within the furnace, they have been sufficiently extensive to permit a postulation of the following general principles: I. Iron, in its travel from furnace top to hearth, continues to pick up sulphur until it has reached tuyere level. The zone of iron desulphurization is relatively narrow, being confined to a vertical distance extending approximately from tuyere level to the iron-slag interface in the hearth.1 2. Combustion of coke is confined to spherical zones extending approximately 40 in. from the nose of each tuyere.2 Coke ash is released as the coke burns in these combustion areas. 3. With a constant amount of sulphur in the charge, the sulphur content of the metal product is a function of hearth temperature, final slag analysis, slag viscosity, and slag volume. Both hearth temperature and slag analysis affect slag viscosity. For a slag of constant analysis, viscosity always decreases with an increase in temperature;

IT is always of interest to document the origin of real microstructures which closely approach various idealized morphologies. Such instances constitute excellent bases for experimental studies of the effect of microstructure on properties. Typical examples include the eutectoid steels (lamellae) used by many investigators and the two phase Cu-Cr alloys (spheres) recently employed by Hibbard and Hart The present note describes a structure with cylindrical particles. In a study of certain alloys in the Cr-C system, an alloy was arc melted whose composition was very close to the aCr-Cr,C, eutectic (3.2 wt pct C, according to the latest phase diagram published by Bloom and Grant2). The alloy was not analyzed but previous experience with the melting technique employed indicates good correspondence between intended and analyzed compositions with negligible tungsten contamination from the electrode. The phases present in the alloy were identified by X-ray powder patterns as a chromium and Cr,C,. Typical micrographs, presented in Fig. 1, show unmistakable evidence of the cylindrical geometry of the carbide phase. The eutectic grains are randomly oriented and, consequently, only a few show the true fibrous nature of the carbide particles, most being cut so as to show slightly elliptical cross sections. Within any particular grain, remarkable uniformity is to be observed with respect to the size, shape, spacing, and orientation of the carbide particles. Length to diameter ratios have been estimated from the micrographs to be at least 250:1, with diameters of about lp. This alloy may be of further interest from different viewpoints. On the one hand, it might be used to check the applicability of the equations derived by Fullman3 for computing true particle dimensions of cylindrical particles from opaque random sections. On the other hand, it might be possible to extract the carbide particles from this alloy and repack them in a ductile matrix to form a synthetic structure of the type discussed by Metcalfe et al.4 With the large l:d ratio and the small diameter of the carbide fibers, it is likely that the interdefect distance in each fiber is sufficiently great to permit realization of a large fraction of the presumed high strength of the carbide. The Omaha District, Corps of Engineers, has been doing subsurface exploration work for a number of years, both by contract and with its own forces. Certain practices and procedures concerning the recovery of large diameter cores have been developed which will be described in this paper. Geology Most of the drilling to date has been in connection with structures on the main stem of the Missouri River above Sioux City, Iowa. A wide variety of subsurface conditions has been encountered. The bedrock formations appear in regular order from the oldest to the youngest, traveling upstream; or in other words, the general regional dip is to the northwest. The oldest formation is the Carlile shale, a compaction or noncemented waxy shale of Cretaceous age. Because of its unce-mented, soft nature this shale has a tendency to grind or wash away when drilled. It also has a tendency to rebound or expand when the overlying pressures are removed. A 25-ft bed of sharp, friable sandstone called the Codell member is present near the top of the Carlile shale. This member is a cemented sediment, but in drilling, many of the sand grains are broken loose and exert extensive abrasive action on the core barrel and bit. Above the Carlile shale is the Niobrara chalk, a soft calcareous deposit with shaly horizons and some thin beds of bentonitic clay. The average thickness of this deposit is about 145 ft. It is soft enough to be sawed or bored with ordinary woodworking tools, yet is compact enough to be used as building block. The Pierre shale, the formation above the Niobrara chalk, is over 800 ft in thickness and is the most widespread material in the area. It is a dark colored, compaction shale containing numerous thin bentonitic clay seams and at certain horizons, hard manganese concretions. The shale has numerous faults and in addition, along the valley walls, has undergone considerable slumping. Joints, fault planes and slickensided surfaces are common features encountered in drilling and add to the difficulties of high core recovery. East of the Missouri River the bedrock is generally covered with from 100 to 200 ft of glacial till, composed of clays, silts, sands, gravels and boulders. The valley itself is filled with alluvial deposits, mostly of the sand and gravel sizes, and contains a buried preglacial or interglacial channel over 100 ft in depth. The overburden deposits require sampling in connection with engineering studies and must also be cased before the underlying bedrock can be cored. The diameter of the required overburden samples can thus have an indirect effect on the size of core recovered from the bedrock. HAVING previously shown you how ores are found and mined, and also how they are prepared and disposed for smelting, and then how the blast furnaces and other furnaces are made for purging their earthiness, all this would be as nothing if I did not proceed to show you the method of smelting them. Therefore, in the present chapter I wish to show you how you must proceed in this very important operation, telling you all I have seen and also how much work with this kind of blast furnace I have done or directed. For this reason I tell you first to take by weight or measure the quantity of ore that you wish to smelt and, particularly if it is a kind that contains silver, break it into small pieces about the size of [52v] beans. If the ore had previously needed evaporation by fire or cleaning by washing, you will have had this done well and have had it properly prepared by a master sorter or others. A layer of this is arranged on a bed of planks, bricks, or flat stones in front of the blast furnace and its companion is placed on top, then a quarter part of galena or a third if you can obtain it. Then an equal part of crushed iron slag or slag from the same or different ore is added. These materials are spread in layers one above the other. When the blast furnace has been constructed as taught above, correct in all its parts, and is full of well-kindled burning charcoal, then fill it up with charcoal and admit water to the bellows machine. When you see that it is well kindled again from this wind and that the flames begin to come out forcefully on top, work it down with a little rake and fill it up again. Then the pannier is filled with new charcoal, the blast furnace heaped full, and another basketful of the said composition of ore is also put on top. Proceed in this way, continually adding charcoal and ore as long as you have any, or as long as you wish to keep up the work, maintaining the blast furnace always full, or continuing in this way until the bottom of the blast furnace is filled with melted materials. Decide this by judgment, or by seeing through the mouth of the tuyère where the wind of the bellows enters that they are level with this. Then with an iron tool open the hole that was left as an outlet in front of the blast furnace and allow all the metal with its slag to run out. These two things, flowing through the chan-

JaRvis,* El Oro, Estado de México, México.—The practical problem raised by Mr. Wisser—that is, the determination of the lower limit of ore deposition, below which it is useless to look for ore shoots—is one of the most important in economic geology. He asks: "Can we learn to determine the position of such a line?" For individual districts, yes; but its determination has always been by empirical methods; that is by actually exploring the veins to such depths that the values drop below the economic limits. Usually the signs are plain enough that values have been bottomed without confirmation by the chemist or assayer. Most veins, when approaching their limit, begin to split into branches or stringers; the vein matter itself undergoes a change from "lively looking" rock to one that is dull and unpromising, the quartz, instead of having segregated into clean vein matter, has simply spread itself into the country rock, rendering this more siliceous but no richer—these, together with inclusions of the country rock in the vein, are all positive indications of the limit. Mr. Wisser seems disposed not to accept the law of cause and effect, which he calls "empiricism." He says: "Empiricism embodies an assumption perhaps not evident at first glance. It is this: that like effects spring from like causes and therefore necessarily have a common meaning." There can be no doubt as to the validity of this law, since it is the foundation stone upon which are built all inductive sciences, including economic geology. When demonstrable, proved facts become confused with inferences, as they seem to be generally in the paper under examination, no sound conclusions can be reached. Mr. Wisser has failed to give sufficient data covering the two vein systems which he cites as examples. Presumably they are situated in the Pachuca District of Mexico, but not everybody is familiar with the vein systems there in spite of the fact that it is world famous as a silver producer. Are these two systems separated some distance horizontally from one another and how far? He has given no estimate of the amount and kind of rock that has been eroded from over the present veins. His description of the two systems appears on page 100, beginning: "1. East-west veins," and ends on page 101, "they would lack spaces there in which to deposit." On page 101, with the paragraph beginning "On the other hand," he gives a picture of what he believes takes place in class 2 veins. The sum of this seems to be, according to Mr. Wisser's observations, that, in the east-west veins, class 1, there has been an invasion of an "altering solution," which I judge has been responsible for the formation of extensive "alteration haloes"; that these alteration solutions have followed along pre-existing fractures or fissures; and that after these alteration solutions finished their work the mineralizing solutions deposited the vein matter and metallic values. Mr. Wisser does not specify clearly what the "alteration haloes" consist of; in other words, what change the original rock has suffered, whether oxidizing, carbonating, or sulphidizing. Since the entry of the United States into global war, virtually all data and information necessary for compiling figures on world petroleum consumption have become unavailable. This situation undoubtedly will continue until the world petroleum industry can return to a peacetime basis. During the past 10 years, the authors, by publishing annual estimates of .world consumption, have attempted to emphasize the importance of a yearly world-wide survey of petroleum supply and demand. It is beconling more and more evident that statistics for the United States alone can no longer give a comprehensive idea of the state of the petroleum industry, even within the United States itself. Therefore, when conditions in the industry again become normal, it is the hope of the authors that those bureaus equipped to do so will carry forward the study of petroleum supply and demand on a world-wide basis. Enough data and information are available, however, to attempt a rough estimate of world output of crude petroleum and petroleum substitutes for 1942, which to some extent may reflect the trend of world consumption. This estimate by countries, as compared with the output in 1941, is shown in Table I. The world production of crude petroleum and petroleum substitutes for 1942 is estimated at 2,208,000,000 bbl., or a decrease of 171,000,000 bbl. under 1941. Crude production is believed to have decreased by about 200,000,000 bbl., (about 9 per cent); while petroleum substitutes increased by 28,500,000 bbl., (nearly 20 per cent). The decline of crude output in the United States is estimated at 19,000,000 bb1.—less than 2 per cent; while that in foreign countries is estimated at 180,000,000 bbl., or more than 20 per cent. The marked decline abroad is due largely to losses in Venezuela and Colombia, where the lack of ocean transportation became the controlling factor, and in the East Indies and Burma, where military invasion brought about the destruction of the fields. The production of petroleum substitutes in 1942 apparently reached a new high figure of 7.5 per cent of the total world petroleum output. The important features of petroleum production outside of the United States are the changes that have taken place during the year in the supply of the Axis countries. In Japan the output for 1941 was estimated at 8,800,000 bbl., 5,500,000 of which were petroleum substitutes. It is believed that the output of synthetic oils during 1942 substantially increased, raising the total interior production of Japan to nearly 10,-ooo,ooo bbl. Also, during 1942 Japanese armed forces gained possession of oil fields having a normal peacetime output of about 78,000,000 bbl. per year. Crude oil stocks were some 10,000,000 bbl higher on June I, 1947, than at any time during 1946 but the extremely heavy refinery runs the last half of 1947 cut crude inventories to approximately the 1946 closing level of 225,000,000 bbl. Many refiners were seriously short of crude oil during the year. This shortage was reflected in numerous advances in the posted price of crude, justified in part as an incentive for more production but more generally due to competitive bidding. Some purchasers of crude, endeavoring to keep their plants running, resorted to the payment, either directly or indirectly, of premiums above the posted price. Another common practice employed by some suppliers of crude oil was to demand refined products in exchange or trade for their raw material. The refined products picture has darkened in spite of record throughputs. Stocks of gasoline and light and heavy fuel oils were uncomfortably low at the beginning of the year and were in general still lower at the close. The rationing of some products, principally gasoline, to dealers and stations? initiated during the year, gained momentum as stocks continued to diminish. The emphasis placed by the manufacturers of oil-burning equipment on the convenience and economy of heating with oil, together with the tight situation in coal, has developed a tremendous demand for burning oils. Consumption of liquefied petroleum gas for domestic and household fuel had more than doubled in 1946 over 1943, and the demand seems to be limited only by the ability of the equipment builders to furnish necessary storage. transportation, and burning equipment. The supply situation is likely to become more acute in 1948. Demand for petroleum products is being pushed to new heights not only by the unprecedented domestic market but by a sudden and drastic upswing in estimates of military and governmental requirements. Additionally, oil exports are running far below the volume requested, amounting to less than forty percent in a recent quarter, and export licenses are reportedly being approved on the basis of urgent need *only. AX recent White House release sees little likelihood that estimated requirements of the sixteen nations participating in the proposed Marshall Plan can be met in full over its projected life—1948 to 1951. Present demand dictates maintenance of refinery operations at the highest possible level and the Bureau of Mines has forecast daily average crude runs in 1948 of 5,265,000 bbl. The Economics Advisory Committee of the Interstate Oil Compact Commission recently estimated the 1948 demand for petroleum products at nearly 6 pct above 1947. They further estimate daily average crude runs of 5,375,000 bbl in 1948, some 2 pct higher than forecast by the Bureau of Mines. Projected demand exceeds supply to the extent that Capitol Hill is reportedly investigating ways of enabling oil companies to act in concert without danger of antitrust prosecution, such as elimination of crosshauls, pooling of products, and lowering of octane.
