Several months ago, some specimens of the minerals occurring at the Etta tin mine, Dakota, were received at the laboratory of the Cornell University. On examining the heavy brownish-black portion, which I presumed was the tin-stone, I was surprised to find only a faint indication of tin. Further investigation showed the mineral to be tantalite. On searching carefully all the fragments received, a considerable quantity of that mineral was found, and only a single streak of cassiterite, which was attached to a mass of spodumene. I was this morning an interested listener to the remarks of Mr. Ashbel Welch in regard to his designing a new section for steel rails, in 1866; and for the salze of the truth of history, and in order t:, give the credit to an American (and where it rightfully belongs) of higning the first section for steel rails, which was intelligently adapted to that material; I beg to state the following facts: On the 14th of August, 1866, Mr. Ashbel Welch gave me an order for 200 tons of steel rails, to be made bbr the Camden and Amboy Railroad, from a section designed by him. In Comodoro Rivadavia, well 8. 132, drilled in zone No. 2, has discovered between 5205 and 5297 ft., the dcepest pool yct found in this field. The oil production in Bahrein for the year 1939 totaled 7,588,554 bbl., a decline of 709,444 bbl. from the 1939 production of 8,297,998 bbl. The production for the first seven months of 1939 remained fairly constant, the daily average by months during this period ranging between 20,000 and 22,000 bbl. per day. The daily average rose in August to the year's high of 23,800 bbl. per day, then dropped gradually to the year's low of 18,787 bbl. per day for November. The daily average for the year was 20,791 bbl. At the end of 1939 there were 59 wells producing and 8 wells drilling.

M. A. Hanna is investigating a nickel prospect near Riddle, Ore. Drilling is under way and a prospect shaft is being put down to obtain samples for metallurgical test work. The deposit is favorably situated for open pit mining. The property had been drilled previously by the USGS and by Freeport Sulphur Co. A $75,000 laboratory pilot plant will begin operations this year to determine if economic beneficiation of a deposit of low grade iron ore, being examined by M. A. Hanna in the Iron River, Mich., district, is possible. Three miles east of Randville 2560 acres of land have been acquired, and drilled, over the last 2 years. The ore is reported to be 34 pat Fe.

ERNST PROCHASKA, Bonne Terre, Mo. (written discussion*).-The special importance of this paper is the fact that it calls special attention to the existence of organic sulfur in coal. Many writers have denied the existence of a chemical compound of carbon with sulfur in coal, .but later investigations, and especially the paper by Fraser and Yancey, prove undeniably its existence. As we become more fully convinced of its existence and as the present methods of washing, either in a jig or on tables, are unable to separate the organic sulfur, it remains for an inven-tive genius to perfect a chemical washing process whereby the sulfur will be, dissolved out of the coal, or we must abandon entirely the washing of such coal.

Delay in classifying the war minerals claims geographically and by minerals' has resulted because a part of the claims is in the hands of the commission which is holding hearings at points easy of access from the mining districts. It was necessary for the commission to take many claims for use at these hearings. Twenty days will be allowed claimants to file typewritten or printed briefs based on the record made by the commission's findings. At the end of twenty days, the case will be finally submitted to the Secretary of the Interior. No new facts will be considered, those which have been submitted to the commission only being given consideration. The Attorney General has issued a decision whereby only such claimants as were directly requested by the government to start operations will receive consideration under the War Minerals Act.

Activity on the part of Local Sec¬tions should be recognized and stimu¬lated by appropriation of funds from the Institute's treasury;. and these appropriations should be as large as is consistent with the relative needs for other activities. 3. As between different Sections, the amount of such appropriations should be based primarily on the extent of activities as reflected in the number and character of meetings held and the attendance of the members at such meetings. 4. In making a request for funds for any year, the officers of a Local Section should submit a report on the printed form approved by the Directors at their meeting on November 19, 1937.

When I presented at the Chicago Meeting of the Institute, in May, 1884, a paper on Hadfield's manganese steel,* which had about that time been brought to the notice of steel manufacturers, I promised to furnish some physical tests of the steel for publication in the Transactions. The fulfilment of the promise then made has been delayed by various circumstances; but I have recently been put in possession of tests of this steel carefully made at the Woolwich, England, arsenal. Messrs. Hadfield & Co. prepared for the arsenal a series of twelve test-pieces, made from the same heat. An analysis of the steel gave the following results: Carbon,.........73 Silicon,.........37 Sulphur,.........06 Phosphorus,. .08 Manganese,...... 9.83 The test-pieces had been heated to a white heat and plunged into cold water prior to being put into the machine. The Engineering Council met on October 11 in the rooms of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Engineering Societies Building, New York. The Rules Committee submitted a draft of rules for the admission of other societies to the Council and progress was made in their consideration. The Committee on Public Affairs reported on a number of requests that the Council support pending or proposed legislation. Remedial laws intended to promote hydro-electric development were favored and Council voted to offer its cooperation to the United States Chamber of Commerce which is interesting itself in this matter. A movement to coordinate, unify and strengthen the work of various engineering committees cooperating with the federal authorities at Washington was favorably considered. Messrs. H. W. The application of the color-method for the estimation of manganese in iron and steel, based upon the depth of the characteristic purple color of permanganic acid, was first made in this country, the writer thinks, by one of the members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, Mr. Samuel Peters, in 1874, at the laboratory of the Bay State Iron Company, and was published by him in the Chemical News. There's a right way and a wrong way to store diesel electric systems and similar equipment for generating on-site power, according to James Frankow, service manager for Allis-Chalmers Corp's Engine Division. In any event, the less storage the better. Many generating sets are stored before installation, especially when new construction is underway. Improper storage, or mothballing, can create initial reliability problems. Therefore; arrange for inside storage with no drastic extremes in temperature or humidity. If engines and alternators are stored in areas other than inside a dirt-free and temperature-controlled building, the unit or engine should be completely covered and protected against the environment. Before covering it with a canvas or with plastic, the unit should first be sealed at the following critical engine openings:

Mr. Juvkam-Wold's article is a timely and much needed presentation of the method of depressurization to reduce ground- water inflow into mine shafts. The article is very informative and discusses the effects of depressurization upon shaft inflows adequately. However, the article omits a discussion of another important benefit of depressurization: the reduction of potential for artesian burst or, as it is also called, floor heave. Confined aquifer systems (artesian aquifers) can contain water under several hundred pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure. The fall meeting of the. Institute of Metals Division will be held in Philadelphia on Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. All meetings will be held in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Broad and Walnut Streets, which is also the hotel headquarters. As this meeting is being held in conjunction with the meeting of the American Foundrymen's Association, the members of the Institute will have the privileges of the exhibit of the Foundrymen's Association. This, it is expected, will be one of the largest exhibits made in this country. On Monday evening, Sept. 29, there will be a meeting, in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, of former officers and members of the Executive Committee of the Institute. It is requested that all officers and Committee members, the present as well as the past, will arrange to be present.

When the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund was established in. 1929 the donors mentioned certain types of projects to which preference might be given in selecting those to he financed by the income from the Fund. One suggestion. was that the projects "be of particular benefit to young engineers." This modest little book meets this specification most aptly. It seeks to guide the engineer-particularly the young one-with the least loss of time and effort to the most convenient source of authentic information regarding any topic in which he may at the moment be interested. Knowing the best place to find the literature on a subject is almost as valuable-and far more practicable-than maintaining a library of one's own large enough to provide the information.

Cobalt recovery from arsenical concentrates by pressure leaching and reduction involves special methods and operating problems. Principal steps in the process are auto-oxidation acid leaching under pressure, filtration of the tailings, purification of the solution, hydrogen reduction of the ammoniacal solution, and electrical furnacing for sulfur removal and granulating the metal. Extracting cobalt metal from arsenical ores has presented a major metallurgical problem for many years. In acquiring the Blackbird mine near Salmon City, Idaho in 1943 Calera Mining Co. accepted the challenge to solve this problem.
