The effect of small additions of oxygen on the hardness, density, and lattice parameters of high purity zirconium has been investigated. Precision parameter values and density of oxygen-free zirconium are given as: a,, - 3.2258 kX units, C = 5.1373 kX units, O23 = 6.507 g per cc. THE effect of oxygen on the hexagonal-phase lattice constants of pure zirconium is of interest for several reasons. The extensive hardening effect of oxygen noted by previous investigators' must be due in part to the lattice distortion accompanying its introduction and possibly to the preferred position of the oxygen atoms. De Boer and Fast' have shown that oxygen is taken into solid solution in large amounts, appearing to occupy an interstitial position. These authors also found that expansion of the lattice was not uniform since the a axis attained a constant value after the addition of 10 atomic pct while the c axis continued to expand. Coal mine refuse handling traditionally has been the redheaded stepchild of the industry-a problem to be ignored as much as possible. During the past few years, however, mining companies have become more aware of the potential water pollution problem associated with refuse handling and storage. Planning for refuse disposal involves environmental protection and the economics of refuse handling. For over two years, Monterey Coal Co. has operated a non-polluting refuse disposal system at its No. 1 Mine located in Brushy Mound Township of Macoupin County 6 miles south of Carlinville, Illinois. Drainage goes to Spanish Needle Creek and eventually to the Illinois River. The mine produced 3.5 million tons of clean coal during its first two and one-half years of operation and is designed to produce 3 million tpy of clean coal at capacity.

Conveyors were first used underground at Miami Copper Co., in the latter part of 1947. At that time some of the stoping area was too heavy and too close to the haulage level to use conventional haulage. To get the haulage drifts out from under the stoping area belt conveyors were used for the additional lateral transfer. Since 1947 more than 8 million tons have been mined in this manner, with as many as four belt type stopes in production at one time. When the mining plan for the new low grade was worked out, it was decided to use belts on what otherwise would have been short train haulage transfers to move the ore laterally to centrally located concrete ore passes. One group of these stopes has grizzly levels on the 570, with a belt level on the 670; the other group has grizzly levels on the 720 and belt levels on the 820, with the concrete ore passes bottoming on the 1000, or the existing train haulage level.

In the central Ohio area well completions and new production each increased 60 per cent. in 1928 over the previous year. Gas wells increased only 27 per cent. The ratio of dry holes to total completions was unchanged. Ashland County led with 113 completions; a new pool in the shallow Berea sand near Jeromesville stimulated activity. Licking County in the Clinton deep sand territory, however, lead in new production with 972 bbl. Two other deep sand counties followed closely, Coshocton with 831 bbl., and Muskingum with 718 barrels. The Trenton rock or Lima field of northwestern Ohio declined sharply in oil well completions to 130 for 1928 from 210 for the previous year. New production increased from 3000 to 6100 bbl., the increase coming from the Murphy pool in Liberty township, Seneca County. The total of gas wells was unchanged as compared with 1927. The ratio of dry holes to total completions rose from 13 per cent. in 1927 to 27 per cent, in 1928. The largest producer in the Murphy pool made 1200 bbl, in the first 24 hr. The total depth of the wells in this pool averages 1475 ft.; average initial production, 125 barrels.

Between two and three years ago, in response to an unmistakable and insistent demand, the four Founder Societies appointed Committees on "Aims and Organization," or on "Development," charged with reporting on the internal organization and the external (non-professional) ac-tivities of the engineers societies and to advise as to coöperations and coordination. Each of these committees formulated a report, recognizing that effi-ciency in external activities could only be attained by intimate coopera-tion between the four Societies. As a consequence, each of the Founder Societies was requested to appoint members of a Joint Conference Committee, charged with discussing the situation and evolving if possible a plan of cooperation in external activities which would coordinate not only the efforts of the four Founder Societies but also other national technical and scientific societies, as well as local engineering and profes-sional associations, groups or clubs. The Joint Conference Committee entered on its task with enthusiasm, and after great labor evolved the outline and many of the details of plan for engineering cooperation in public and inter-society activities. This report has now been submitted to the Boards of the Four Founder Societies, and has been ordered printed by our Board for the information of our members.

(written discussion *).-The principle involved in the Crowe vacuum precipitation process is so elementary and the apparatus required is so simple, that the whole subject affords scant material for a technical discussion. As. one prominent Colorado metallurgist recently remarked when asked to contribute to this paper: "The Crowe process is the biggest step forward since the early clays of the cyanide process, but there is nothing to write about; just put it in your mill and try it." The writer confesses to a similar feeling, but having been closely identified with the process since its inception in 1916, he is perhaps in a position to at least comment on the theory involved and to record some of the results that have been achieved in actual practise. Previously, two groups have conducted studies in order to define the influences of the intermediate principal stress. Mogi studied biaxial compression on prisms of Dunham dolomite and concluded that the intermediate principal stress should be taken into account. His study showed that failure strength increases with increasing [02], but less than the strength increase with increasing confining pressure. Handin, Heard, and Mogouirk's study on cylinders of Solenhofen limestone in torsion also found that the strength depends on the magnitude of [02]. More recent investigations by Mogi varying all three principal stresses independently and by Wawersik varying two of the principal stresses independently provide more detailed data confirming the effect of [02] on failure. All these tests were at low strain rates, and only the work of Wawersik reports measurement of all strains. The investigation here measures axial and transverse strains and included uniaxial and triaxial stress compression tests and biaxial stress tests using tubular samples (axial load and internal or external fluid pressure) at strain rates to 103/sec to provide the stress-strain response and to define the maximum stress or yield locus of Solenhofen limestone and Westerly granite.

The cyanide process in the United States, notwithstanding numerous failures made under the direction of the owners of the patent-rights, and others, has now passed its experimeiital stage, and can, undoubtedly, be made successful when intelligently applied to suitable material. Much, however, remains to be known as to the exact conditions under which this process is applicable to the treatment of gold-bearing ores. If the owners of the patent-rights in this country have ever scientifically investigated the matter, they have never published any valuable informatioil on the subject. Other parties who are now using the process (often independently of the patentees), have nothing to gain by publishing their experience; and, moreover, many of the chemical reactions described in the text-books refer to the use of solutions of potassium cyanide many times stronger than are used in the metallurgical process.

The object of this paper is to describe some efforts and observations by the writer relating to this subject. Althongh the usual type of' blast-furnace is a most efficient device for smelting and melting purposes, it is not suitable for utilizing the cheaper grades of fuel, such as coal-slack and certain gaseous fuels. This problem not only involves the consideration of the furnace as a suitable apparatus, but also embraces the consideration of the chemical and calorific properties of the proposed fuel. In the hearth of the ordinary blast-furnace an extremely high temperature is maintained. This extreme temperature is due to the complete combustion of the fuel in the hearth, and before the gases reach the zone of fusion their temperature is reduced, by the absorption of carbon, 2300 degrees Fat). Although the similarity between puzzolana, or trass, and blastfurnace slag, as seen by comparison of the analyses, is a well-known fact, blast-furnace slag has not been used commercially as a substitute for those cementing materials. The reason, the writer apprehends, lies in the fact that unless such slag is disintegrated or subdivided by rolls, the process must either be too costly, or the material is not in a fit and proper condition for the purpose. In order to produce a reliable slag cement, the slag must be ground together with the lime into an impalpable powder. The subdivided slag must, therefore, be perfectly dry, and, at the same time, friable. The stronger the hydraulic properties of the lime, the more reliable the slag cement will be, and practice has proved, that the slag from a gray-iron furnace gives the best results. The slag cement which has given the results shown in the annexed table, under pressure tests, was composed of six parts of slag, from a blast-furnace producing No. 3 foundry iron, and one part of lime, of medium hydraulic properties. The above-described class of cement bears storing as long as most Portland cements, and the cheapness of its production is self-evident.

The elite group of companies below represent the mining sector of Fortune magazine's June Directory listing the 500 U.S. industries that chalked up the largest dollar sales volume in 1966. The companies are listed according to their 1966 sales rank, which is given along with their 1965 rank for comparative purposes. All of the firms except two-Freeport Sulphur and Texas Gulf Sulphur-were in the Fortune Directory last year, and both these exceptions have been counted among the top 500 in former years. The one mining name that is missing from last year's list-Consolidation Coal-has actually jumped from number 217 to 4 by virtue of its merger with Continental Oil. As can be seen from the Industry Medians, the mining industry as a whole boosted its sales 17.8%, in 1966, making it the seventh largest gainer among the 22 industrial classifications covered in the Directory. By comparison, 1965 mining sales increased 10.2%, a gain which was surpassed by 13 other industries. In two other comparative tables, mining leads the field, topping the entire list in return on sales and in assets per employee.

George Hammell Cook was born at Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey, January 5, 1818. His early education was obtained in the country school, and he was, for a short time, a teacher in his native town. In 1836 he was engaged, as a civil engineer, in making surveys and locating the line of the Morris and Essex Railroad from Newark to Morristown, and the extension of the road to the Delaware River. Appreciating the advantages of a thorough education, and seeking a wider field of usefulness, he entered the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy in 1838, and, was graduated from that .school in 1839. In this institution he heard the lectares of Amos Eaton, the famous teacher, from whom so many of our older scientists caught their inspiration and love for the natural sciences. A method of accurately determining the value of gold-bearing ores and gravels with a compact field-outfit is much desired by prospectors, especially when the work lies in a district far removed from railways or good wagon-roads. We are all familiar with the fire-assay of gold-ores, and fully recognize its accuracy and value; but only those who have tried to determine the value of a gold-bearing vein as a commercial venture, from fire-assays of selected samples, know how misleading is the information thus obtained, however carefully and honestly the samples may be selected. Meeting of Sept. 25, 1914.-The Committees to have charge of the arrangements for the Annual Meeting in New York, Feb. 15 to 18, 1914, were appointed. It was voted that the Secretary of the Institute take up with the Chairmen of the Local Sections the question of arranging for the transportation to the meetings of the Institute of the members of the respective sections. The Board of Directors unanimously voted to extend to each and all of the members of the Local Committees of the Salt Lake Meeting its hearty thanks for their efforts which resulted in the very successful meeting. The President was authorized to sign the letter to the President of the United States in regard to the appointment of some representative of the mineral industry upon the Federal Trade Commission. An appropriation of $250 was granted to the Southern California Local Section. The By-Laws of the Utah Local Section were approved. Three types of commercially-available dust suppressants, commonly used in the surface mining industry to control fugitive particulate emissions from unpaved roads, were tested in the laboratory for cohesive strength and resistance to reduced effectiveness by large water addi¬tions. Results indicate that each product tested varies in cohesive strength with a range of 34-300 kPa (5-44 psi). Total cohesive strength depends on the aggregate moisture content and the means by which the sample is dried. Results show that laboratory testing can be used as a decision¬making tool concerning the type of dust suppressant for a particular mining operation. Also, the road surface aggre¬gate moisture content u critical to successful dust suppres¬sant performance. Large water additions to the aggregate road surface after initial suppressant application can pro¬duce nondesirable results. A modified wet sieving analysis is presented to test the effect of water addition.

DURING the last winter we have been actively engaged in the School of Mines in search for boracic acid. This has been owing to the fact that Mr. M. W. Iles, assistant in the qualitative laboratory, has discovered a test for that substance which makes its discovery exceedingly simple instead of being, as previously, very difficult. It consists in powdering the mineral, calcining it, then moistening it with sulphuric acid, and heating on a platinum wire until the sulphuric acid is expelled. It is then moistened with glycerin and made to take fire. If boracic acid is present it infallibly gives a green flame. It is not at all surprising, under such circumstances, the test being so easy, that boracic acid has been found by the students in a great many cases where its presence was not previously suspected, and in some where its detection was previously too difficult to warrant looking for it. We were not prepared, however, for its discovery in Lake Superior iron ores, and were disposed at first to think that a mistake had been made. Last spring the suggestion was made that the national engineering societies offer to assist the War Department in the formation of an engineer reserve in the United States Army. The suggestion was brought to the attention of some of the officers of the Army, who commended it and confirmed the belief that the need of such a reserve was a real one; that the European war had distinctly shown that engineers in time of war are required on a scale never before realized and of great varieties of experience. In our own army no adequate provision is made for great numbers of engineers, for although the corps of engineers is composed of men of the very highest professional proficiency in certain lines it is greatly short of the numerical strength that would be immediately required. Acting on this suggestion, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the American Institute of Consulting Engineers appointed committees authorized and directed to take such steps as might be advisable to urge the organization of such a reserve corps as part of the. regular army, and so assist in putting the United States in a better condition of prepared-

With statistics still incomplete, it appears that the safety record of the mineral industry for 1955 will do well to hold its own in comparison with 1954. On the one hand, metal mining shows an improvement in its record, due in part to intensive campaigns for preventing ground fall accidents. Coal mining, on the other hand, is showing a poorer record in 1955 than for the preceding year. While no major disasters occurred during the year, increased fatalities resulted from ground fall, haulage, and machinery accidents. It seems probable that increased job training may serve to improve the situation. Health: Utilization of diesel equipment continues to increase in noncoal mines, in spite of existing prejudice. In 1955 two types of diesel-driven tractors and one shuttle car were approved by the USBM. Where diesel engines are used controlled ventilation is mandatory in order to keep the CO content under 20 ppm, but such ventilation is not difficult to achieve with normal equipment.
