Current responsibilities, opportunities and challenges for those with geophysical expertise are defined. In a recent publication in the SME Transactions of September, 1975, Volume 258, entitled "Potential for Further Lowering Sulfur in Intensively Cleaned Coal at Mines", the writer discussed: (1) technical findings useful for the management of reserves to further lower sulfur in intensively cleaned coal, and (2) a future coal preparation plant concept for the intensive cleaning of sulfur. Seven formulas commonly used to evaluate industrial screening efficiency are investigated to determine if they are suitable for calculating the efficiency of rectangular-hole screens. Six formulas were found to be limited in application to square-hole screens. The seventh, although acceptable for evaluating rectangular-hole as well as square-hole screening efficiency, was found to be unwieldy. A new formula is developed based on the concept of misplaced sizes. This proposed formula permits the single step determination of efficiency and is applicable to all types of screening applications.

As predicted a year ago, owing to the discovery in 1936 of crude oil on the west flank of the south end of Tuner Valley in the eastern foothills of Alberta, 50 miles southwest of Calgary, and the drilling activity that resulted, the production of crude oil in Canada during 1937 showed a very substantial increase over the previous year. The production from other parts of Canada is relatively small and shows slight variations only from year to year. The production of crude oil in Canada and the production in Alberta, the main producing Province, is shown in Tables 1 and 2.

A grain model for gas-solid reactions in cylindrical pellets is formulated and solved numerically. The numerical solution demonstrates when it is safe to assume either a thin disk or a long cylinder geometry, and when the more general two dimensional geometry must be used. The numerical solution also demonstrates the solution of a two-dimensional moving boundary problem (i.e., when the reaction is diffusion controlled and the ratio of the height to diameter dictates two dimensions).

Early in 1963, the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co., at Inspiration, Ariz., began a program to make automatic the lubrication of several critical points on their KW Dart 37SL haulage trucks. Prior to installation of the automatic lubrication system, all the haulage trucks were serviced by hand every three shifts. Now, with automatic lubrication, the service period has been extended to four shifts. What are the principal benefits to be expected from such a system? 1) Uninterrupted production; 2) extended machinery life; 3) good housekeeping; 4) lower maintenance costs. Of these points, the most important to truck maintenance are extended component life and lower maintenance costs.
