Since D. C. Jackling was famous for his adeptness at organizing and training teams of operating personnel, the subject of mine management is particularly appropriate for a Jackling Lecture. In fact, it is doubly appropriate because in very basic ways Jackling's career changed the nature of the tasks and challenges facing a mine manager. Management of mines, of course, is the art of finding and winning minerals economically from the earth's crust, and it involves the use of all the engineering sciences. But also of prime importance is a skill which is not yet a science-the area of management often referred to as human engineering. Since expenditures on staff and labor may well involve more than 50% of the direct costs of operating a mine, ability at human engineering is just as important as the ability to plan and put into effect the most efficient operating procedures.

On the bulk basis New York's contribution to the production of oil is small, representing, as it does, a bare half of one per cent of the annual total for the United States. Yet it has more importance than is implied by such a statement. Petroleum includes a variety of organic compounds, some more and some less valuable. It would be a fairer estimate of the situation to say that New York in recent years has produced around 10 to 12 per cent on the average of all Pennsylvania grade oil, the supply of which is strictly limited and the demand steady even in times of overproduction of other grades. One may not infer from this that New York and other Appalachian states enjoy an independent position in the market with a price structure uninfluenced by that of the Mid-Continent, Gulf or California fields. On the other hand, the recent market demoralization in the South and West brought about by uncontrolled production caused prices to drop to a point where the life of the local industry was seriously threatened. The current cost of producing oil in New York under the methods of water-flooding, by which most of the output is now obtained, has been estimated by competent authority at not less than $2.50 a barrel. The development of a simple method to predict the autogenous grinding possibilities of new ore deposits is attained. This method employs a 45-cm (18-in.) dry grinding Aerofall mill to grind small quantities of core or crushed samples in the top size range of 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in.). An extensive program has been carried out to correlate the data obtained in the 45-cm (18- in.) test mill with the actual results obtained in large commercial plants or autogenous test plants. Enough evidence now exists from these correlation programs that the 45-cm (18-in.) mill can be used to grind small samples from a new deposit and correctly predict the autogenous grinding mill requirements of a commercial plant to treat this ore.

Largest uranium deposit in the Northwest is Dawn Mining Co.'s Midnite mine on the Spokane Indian B Reservation. The orebodies lie along the contact of granite and metamorphosed sedimentary rock and are controlled by faults and shear zones near the granite contact. In the oxidized zone the deposits consist mainly of the secondary uranium mineral meta-autunite; sooty uraninite and primary uranium minerals are known to occur at greater depths. Elevations in the mine area range from 2500 to 3500 ft. The rolling hills and low, rounded mountains are covered with grass and evergreen trees.

THE precipitation of phosphoric with titanic acid, by boiling an iron solution which had been reduced to the ferrous condition by sulphuretted hydrogen or sulphurous acid, was first noticed by E. H. Bogardus in 1874.* Since that time, as far as we are aware, not much has been published on the relation- of these two acids to each other, and to silicic acid, in the ordinary course of analysis of iron ores. The following investigation may perhaps aid in clearing up some of the obscure points in the analysis of titaniferous ores. THE DETERMINATION OP PHOSPHORUS. THE definitions of the terms commonly used in connection with metamorphism at elevated temperature near igneous contacts are re-examined. As the study of tactite zones associated with igneous contacts progresses, more and more emphasis is put on the localization of the ore by structural forms. The generally early age of the silicates and late age of the sulphides is well established. Postsilicate structural deformation is likely to localize ore bodies. The silicates are often replaced by the ore minerals. We may not be far from proving that the elements involved in the formation of silicate aureoles are merely normal "volcanic" emanations, that silica, lime, magnesia, and alumina and probably soda and potash are likely to undergo local transfers only. The work of Newhouse suggests the agents of the formation of sulphides in deposits of various classifications are the volcanic emanations.

INTRODUCTION Request to Mine Beneath Bridge The Jakes Run Bridge is a reinforced Portland concrete arch filled bridge located on WV Route 7 near Pentress, WV. The bridge has a span of 22.9 m (meters) and a height of 4 m above normal pool elevation to the underside of the center of the arch (See Fig 1). The bridge is a two lane structure with a width of 6.86 m. The structure is over 50 years old having been built in 1929 and is owned by the Department (WV Department of Highways). [ ]

IN the Indiana limestone district, some 50 or 60 per, cent of the merchantable stone in a quarry opening is waste, and only about 40 or 50 per cent of the stone from the opening is finally sold. So long as the present system of quarrying is used, the wastes measured and reported in this paper will continue. Comprehensive development of an entirely different method of quarrying, using wire saws for cutting, promises great improvement. Some of the savings to be expected are pointed out in the following pages. No attempt has been made to measure losses due to variations and natural flaws in the stone, since these vary greatly in different quarries, and accurate measurement would be difficult. The wastes that have been measured account for about 30 per cent of the total ledge, which leaves 20 or 30 per cent chargeable to unmeasured sources of loss.

THE advent of curved jaw crusher wearing plates made an approach other than segmental layout analysis desirable for prediction of capacities. For some time it had been known that the drawing board capacities of crushers using these plates had to be considerably modified by complicated experience factors to achieve agreement with results. Because these apparent capacities could be readily increased severalfold by minor crushing chamber shape changes, it was necessary that the utmost precaution be taken in predicting capacities of jaw plates modified for nonchoking, special wear characteristics, or any other reason. To this end the laboratory and field tests outlined by the author in a previous paper' were made on Blake-type jaw crushers. The results of these tests were summarized in a simple first degree equation applicable to crushers using either straight or curved jaw plates. This equation first outlines the maximum capacity potential of a given crusher, then reduces this figure in accordance with installation circumstances by means of a realization factor.

Oil was discovered in Nebraska on Nov. I, 1939, when the Pawnee Royalty Company's Boice No. I well, about 3 miles west of Falls City (NE 1/4 NE 1/4, sec. 18, T.r N., R.16 E., Richardson County) was drilled into the Hunton formation but the develop-ment of the area took place during 1940. After a pumping test lasting 18 days, the Boice well stopped producing and failed to qualify for the State bonus of $ 15,000 offered for the first oil well to produce go bbl. per day for 60 consecutive days. On May 9, 1940, the Pawnee Royalty Company's Bucholz No. I well was completed about M mile southeast of the discovery well and flowed at the rate of about 330 bbl. per day, easily meeting the State bonus requirements. In addition to the discovery well, which later was reconditioned, and the bonus well, 28 producers were drilled in the Falls City field during 1940. Of these wells, 23 are in sec. 20, two are in the northern part 'of sec. 29, two in the southwestern part of sec. 17 and three in the eastern part of sec.

THE data on the critical resolved shear stress for zinc single crystals published by Rosbaud and Schmid1 showed many irregularities, as seen in fig. 1. There have been subsequent investigations,2,3 but no one has repeated this work with a wide range of orientations, with specimens of a higher degree of purity and perfection, and with improved experimental techniques in order to determine whether these variations were entirely experimental or whether they might have been due, at least in part, to some feature of the mode of deformation not known or understood. THE graphic methods and records described in this article have been developed, with satisfactory results, for the use of executives of the Chino Copper Co., in Hurley, N. Mex. Particular attention is directed to the use of large wall-charts, the quick reference display of large charts, the scale notation of metallurgical charts, the inclusion of mesh extraction on screen analysis diagrams. To properly comprehend the operation and metallurgical results from a concentrating plant, a daily record of essential data is kept, usually involving the dry weight of ore milled or treated, dry weight of concentrate or metal produced, assay values of heading, assay values of tailing, assay values of concentrate, and percentage of extraction or recovery. In addition it is often necessary to record moisture, pulp density, or dilution; percentage of weight of oils and reagents employed; screen analyses of grinding conditions, oversize, etc.; assay values of non-valuable or interfering substances; cost data; and such special information as may be required.

A recent research study performed under US Bureau of Mines Contract No. J0199088 "Modular Irrigation Equipment for Reclaimed Strip Mined Lands" investigated the feasibility of irrigation as a reclamation tool in the arid and semi-arid regions of the Western United States. Review of mined land characteristics, evaluation of irrigation systems, and assistance from the mining industry resulted in the design of two strategies for the implementation of reclamation irrigation using solid set systems. It is not the intent of this paper to suggest the generalizations made on the basis of a six state area can extend to the design of an irrigation system for a specific mine site. The purpose is to present two irrigation strategies that may be implemented with solid set irrigation in this six state area. The reader should note that the following is the result of research and, therefore, original concepts were presented. The ultimate validity of these concepts will be determined by future field tests.

Conventional methods of drill hole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drill holes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drill holes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

From previous work, it was learned that relative strengths of blasting agents can be reasonably predicted from heats of detonation modified by their (D/D*)2 ratio.(1) Bulk Strength = Q x d x (D/D*)2 x K (1) In this equation Q is the ideal heat released during detonation, d is density, D represents actual detonation velocity while D* is ideal velocity. An energy transfer coefficient, K, was used to account for differences among rock strata in response to explosive loading. This equation gave reasonable, field supported strength values for oxygen balanced blasting agents. For aluminized nitrocarbonitrates and slurries which have high Q's the rating system predicted better strengths than were shown in the field. This discrepancy was felt to be related primarily to problems in calculating Q and D*. Theoretical calculations cannot take into account varying energy contributions from particulated aluminums whose reactivities vary substantially with physical properties. One approach to circumventing this problem would be to use a characteristic Q that is dependent on mass reactivity of ingredients as components in explosive formulations. Since the underwater testing method is capable of measuring a functional, relative energy release, it was chosen for study.

INTRODUCTION The Kidd Creek Mine produces a total of 3.6 million tons annually. Geologically the orebody is complex, containing rich values of zinc, copper, silver and lead which are mined and milled as two separate "ore types". Production is mainly from highly mechanized sub-level open stopes of approximately 300,000 tons each. The Mine Engineering Department has developed, and now operates, a computer system that is the subject of this report. It was created specifically to aid the daily work of the mining engineer and has features that are new and possibly unique in the industry. DESIGN OBJECTIVES In 1971 a task force, set up to investigate the subject of computer assistance to mine engineering, specified four design requirements which it felt a successful application had to satisfy. They were:- 1) The computer had to offer a TOTAL SYSTEM that was fully integrated into the routine mine engineering function. 2) The computer had to be directly usable by the current engineering staff, the majority of which had received no formal training in computing.

The substitution of cobalt for part of the nickel in Invar was found by P. H. Brace1 to lower the coefficient 01 expansion. Scott1 extended the use of cobalt to alloys of higher inflection temperatures. Such alloys have a larger temperature range of low expansion than those without cobalt, and their use up to 400' or 500°C. offers decided advantages in certain applications. However, it has been found that the iron-nickel-cobalt alloys are not stable in this temperature range. Experimental Methods Two methods were used in studying the stability of the low-expansion iron -nickel-cobalt alloys. Dilatometer specimens were held at 480°C. for 9 months and the change in expansion characteristics was dctcr- mined. Filings were held for about 2 months at various temperatures and the change in structure was determined by X-ray diffraction. As shown by Table I, the alloys studied covered a wide range in nickel plus cobalt content (which determines the inflection temperature) as well as some variation in the ratio of nickel to iron (which controls the temperature of the gamma to alpha transformation). Included also are alloys containing carbon and vanadium, carbon and titanium and three with various amounts of copper. The alloys were melted in a high-frequency induction furnace with a magnesia crucible, using ingot iron, electrolytic nickel and commercial cobalt. THE communication which I have to lay before my fellow-members of the Institute, is no elaborate paper, nor the statement of any great discovery ; it is simply the record of convenient methods of conducting topographical surveys, and of keeping the notes of the same; methods that have grown out of practical experience, and have saved me many a day's labor by facilitating office and field work, and at the same time secured a greater degree of accuracy than is obtained by the methods now in general use. I assume it as granted that no topographical map is worthy of the name, except it represent the elevations and depressions of the surface by means of horizontal or contour lines. In the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain, the contour lines are traced for every fifty feet vertical height, I believe, by running out the line with level and compass through all its meanderings on the surface ; this, of course, is a very tedious, though accurate process, but "in the woods," where many of our surveys have to be made, it would be practically impossible. There seems to be in the public mind, and even in the minds of some coal-operators not experienced in mines subject to dust-explosions, a feeling that there has been somet-hing mysterious at the bottom of a number of recent American colliery-exploaions. It has been declared in cases of accidents in mines regarded as particularly well equipped, in which every preventive precaution was said to have been taken, that the explosions were incomprehensible, and resulted from causes beyond the present knowledge of the practical coal-operator. But it is safe to say that no explosion has taken place which could not be explained by reasons well understood by most operators. The U. S. Geological Survey Testing Laboratory, recently inaugurated at Pittsburg for the reported purpose of investigating scientifically the matter of explosions in mines, will discover no new explanation of explosions. It can, however, co-ordinate the previous investigations of similar boards in England and on the Continent; and it may do a vast amount of good by promulgating widely, and in a form comprehensible to the most unlettered miner, certain facts and obvious deductions that cannot but have an effect in reducing the number and extent of the mine-disasters which, in the last few years, have been so terrible in frequency and magnitude.
