The use of a pneumatic process for removing fine material (usually less than 48-mesh) is increasing in the preparation of stoker-size coal. The fine material, produced as a byproduct, is known as dedusting-plant dust. Since fusain is the most friable ingredient in bituminous coal (it may readily be rubbed to an impalpable powder with the fingers), it tends to accumulate in this byproduct. While studying the properties of cokes produced by blending Illinois coals with other materials, considerable quantities of fusain were required. Dedusting-plant dust suggested itself as a convenient supply. It became necessary, therefore, to determine how much fusain was contained in a measured sample of dust, how the fusain was distributed with respect to size and specific gravity in the sample, and whether or not it would be feasible or desirable further to concentrate or to recover the fusain from the dust before using it in the blends to be coked. The results obtained indicate the possibilities of production of a high-fusain material. Previous Work Lehmann and Stach have developed a processl,2 for separation of banded bituminous coals into their band ingredients by impact pulverization followed by screening or air separation. They found, as might be expected, that the fusain was concentrated in the very fine material. Prockat and Raute3 examined samples from dedusting plants operating in the Ruhr. They separated the dust into various screen sizes and determined the composition of each of these sizes in terms of the banded ingredients of the original coal. In the dusts examined by them, the finest material was always high in fusain, and most of the fusain contained in the original samples could be recovered from this fraction.

INTRODUCTION The use of computers to assist the mine ventilation engineer began to grow in the early 1950s when electrical analogue devices were developed for the analysis of mine airflow systems in Europe and the United States (l,2,3). The need for quantitative planning of airflows in mines had become pressing and analogue computers fulfilled a useful purpose for over a decade. From about 1964 onwards, digital computer programs for mine ventilation network analysis became available (4,5) and, superseding the analogues, spread rapidly throughout the major mining countries. The successful implementations of such programs resulted in further research being directed towards the development of simulation programs to model the quality as well as the quantity of air flowing through underground workings. It is no understatement that digital computers have revolutionised environmental planning techniques in modern mining industries. This paper discusses the complex interaction of natural and mining factors which governs environmental hazards in underground mines and further indicates some of the simulation techniques which have entered practical usage or are at an advanced stage of development. THE PROBLEM OF ANALYSING THE MINE ENVIRONMENT The traditional methods of approaching environmental problems underground were based largely on empirical or intuitive techniques. The reason for this lay in the intricate relationships which exist between the many variables that influence the mine environment - and which limit the use of purely analytical methods to the simplest of cases. ILLINOIS supplies coal to seven states in the Upper Mississippi Valley -Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and portions of the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas. In this same area are marketed large quantities of coal from West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and else-where; fuel oil from the crude petroleum supplies of the Mid-Continent fields, and natural gas from Louisiana, Kansas and the Texas Panhandle. The boundaries of this "Illinois coal-market area" are determined by competition from other coal fields and from other forms of fuel. Within the area so described 90 per cent of Illinois coal is marketed. Thus in the Southwest, an abundance of fuel-oil supplies and natural gas domi-nates the market almost to the exclusion of coal. The westward move-ment of Illinois coal in Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas is met by an eastward flow of high-grade coals from Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. In the lake-shore counties of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the market is dominated by Appalachian coals, cheaply carried over the Great Lakes and reaching the ports of Lake Michigan and at the head of Lake Superior. Illinois coals find their largest market in the southern and western sections of these two lake states. Only small quantities of Illinois coals are shipped east of the state line. This market area is occupied entirely by the neighboring coal fields of Indiana and the Appalachian coal fields in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania.

During the past few years the underground mining industry and the big hole drilling industry have been involved in a flirtatious courtship, but until recently this courtship did not appear to be taken too seriously by either party. However, many of the promises made by the big hole industry are beginning to come true. Improvements have been made steadily in techniques of mechanical boring of large diameter shafts, raises and tunnels, thus making the big hole industry a more stable partner in the eyes of the mining industry. The mining industry too has made many changes in planning that make mining more attractive to the big hole industry. If there is to be a marriage between big hole drilling and mining, we should certainly take a look at the background of the big hole drilling industry, and examine the three main features of big hole drilling to determine how each applies to mining. Shaft Drilling Since 1950, numerous large diameter shafts have been drilled using rotary drilling techniques. Most of the larger diameter shafts have been drilled for the AEC for underground nuclear testing purposes. However, since 1960 several shafts have also been drilled for various mining companies, particularly in the United States. In 1967, rotary drilling shafts were either completed or in progress at the mining companies listed in Table I.

PRACTICALLY all explosives may be classified as those that burn and those that detonate. Explosives of the first class include .black blasting and smokeless powder and are broadly known as low explosives, or propellants, because they merely burn and do that comparatively slowly. Their action is as if some power behind the projectile or other material were exerting a shoving or pushing action. The high, or detonating, explosives produce a smashing or shattering effect upon the material. In using military- explosives of the propellant class, the breach of the gun, or cannon, is proportioned to hold the pressure, so that the projectile will be blown out. Exactly the reverse is true in commercial work; then it is the "breach" or the hole that is to be broken. The projectile and the explosive are therefore chosen that will rupture the largest "breach" possible. With the high explosives, it is easy to break out the breach (that is why they are of no value as military propellants)" but with some of the low explosives it is necessary to plug up the muzzle very carefully before shooting. Doubtless the use of incendiary mixtures of oxidizing and combustible materials led, in the 13th century, to the perfection of the mixture which is practically the same as our commercial black blasting powder of today. About 600 years later, nitroglycerine was discovered, but for years its great potential energy could not be used because, in its liquid state, it could not be safely handled or transported. The accidental discovery that kieselguhr would absorb, and hold fairly well, three times its own weight of nitroglycerine, however, made it available. "Guhr dynamite," as the combination nitroglycerine and kieselguhr was termed, was soon displaced by dynamites having an active base, such as wood pulp and other carbonaceous combustible materials. These do all that kieselguhr will do and, in addition, increase the chemical reaction and add materially to the effectiveness of the blast.

LUCIEN EATON, Ishpeming, Mich.-It is not the custom in the Lake Superior region, as far as I know, to employ shot-firers. Each man, or pair of men (most of the contracts are given to two men) do their own firing; each contractor keeps his powder separately. The general custom is to distribute powder (dynamite only is used) to the mines 2 days a week. The boxes, marked with the contract number and the level, are taken underground and the men take them to their working places. They are kept in boxes, which must not be nearer together than 50 ft. and are usually away from the timber roads or traveling roads. When holes have been drilled, one man usually takes down the machine, and the other man makes up the charge. He cuts the fuse, puts in the caps, etc., at a distance from the powder box. He then carries the powder charges to the working place where both men charge the hole. They do their own firing and warn others coming from any direction that the holes are being fired.

The aim of the laboratory experiments described in this paper was twofold: 1. To measure as accurately as possible the maximum amount of crushing that can be effected by 1 hp. acting for 24 hr., by the two proposed methods for measuring the amount of crushing, namely: (a) by Rittinger's method; (b) by Stadler's method, based on Kick's law. 2. To show, if possible, that by one of these methods, the amount of crushing produced by 1 hp. in 24 hr. is a constant amount throughout a wide range in the diameter of the piece crushed, and that by the other method, the amount of crushing is a variable quantity over the same range of diameter; or else show that neither of the proposed methods for measuring the amount of crushing indicates a fixed relation between power and crushing and consequently a new method for computing this amount will have to be found to permit the establishment of a law of crushing. Experimental Methods Testing machines, calorimetric methods and commercial types of rock-crushing machines were considered with reference to their value for measuring power used in crushing. The following electrically driven crushing machines, installed and available in the McGill Ore-dressing Laboratory and which had been used in previous rock-crushing tests, on the whole seemed especially suited to the investigation: (1) Comet "A" crusher; (2) 7 by 9-in. Dodge crusher; (3) 10 by 16-in. rolls. In later tests a 3 ½-ft. Huntington mill was used.

In speaking of the economic geology of southeastern Ontario, W. G. Miller and C. W. Knight1 say that "there occurs in southeastern Ontario a variety of minerals and rocks of economic value, probably as great as in any district of like size on the North American continent. Some of these deposits, including marble and trap, are inexhaustible. Others, including talc and iron pyrites, have proved to be of considerable economic importance. From time to time, during the last 50 years, the following minerals and rocks have been mined or quarried with varying success: gold, iron pyrites, zinc blende, copper pyrites, galena, mispickel, magnetite, hematite, talc, actinolite, mica, marble, ophicalcite, feldspar, fluorite, apatite, corundum, graphite and sodalite. All of the economic materials, with, the exception of fluorite, appear to be of pre-Cambrian age. The fluorite veins penetrate the Ordovician, Black River, limestone." Accompanying that report was an article by the writer on the Queens-boro Pyrite Area which includes one of the two working pyrite properties in southeastern Ontario. In the present paper will be given a brief description2 of all the known pyrite deposits in the area which may at some time possess an economic value, with fuller descriptions of the two working mines—The Canadian Sulphur Ore C,o.'s mine near Queensboro, and the Nichols Chemical Co.'s property at Sulphide. THE Bergbüchlein and Probierbüchlein occupy a unique position in the literature of mining and metallurgy, for, they are the first printed books on any aspect of the two related professions. The first printed book on any subject has an allure that may not be entirely warranted by the strict historical significance of its contents. Among the books of the first century of printing there are very few that contain information that was new at the time of publication. Much' of what they recorded had been previously circulated in manuscript form. Printed books are nevertheless of great value because they mark the time when the author's words, free from errors-or at least with the same errors-became available to large numbers, of readers, who thus could easily and cheaply acquire a common background for their future work. Moreover, though there is occasionally some doubt as to the exact year of publication'(as in the case of the present works), it is generally easier to date a printed work than a manuscript, and thus to provide a fixed coördinate in history. The Bergbüchlein, "The Little Book on Ores," is the first printed work in the field of mining. It is an introduction to mining geology, which means that it was not addressed to the practicing expert but was intended to rouse the interest of beginners in the various aspects of a future vocation. It touches on the theories of the generation of ores, introduces and defines some of the most frequently encountered technical terms of the profession, and indicates what knowledge and tools are required for successful prospecting and mining. It also describes the ores of the seven most important metals. For those parts that deal with theory the author accepted uncritically the traditional teachings of the alchemists and the astrologers; his hints on where to find promising ores are based partly on superstition; but, there is enough factual,

[In discussion of the paper of Mr. J. C. Bayles, read at the New York meeting of September, 1890, Trans., xix., p. 18.1 It is often so difficult to locate the causes of failures of machinery and apparatus which can be examined and studied at leisure, that it is not surprising that the causes of explosions should escape detection. Usually the explosion is the first evidence that anything is amiss, and the time for observing the conditions is necessarily brief. An incident in a welding-works near Essen, Germany, might be cited as exemplifying what trifling causes may lead to disaster, and how difficult, under the most favorable conditions, it may be to discover them. A blowing-engine was arranged with two suction-pipes at each end of the blowing-cylinder—one leading to the air, and the other to the gas-holder. Each pipe was provided with a valve, and all were so adjusted that the cylinder drew in gas and air in the proportions found most advantageous. The gases from the cylinder were carried directly to the furnace through suitable pipes, and while the cylinder was provided with relief-valves, every effort was made to prevent explosions, principally by compressing the gases to a point where the rate of efflux of the mixture was greater than the velocity of combustion, if the expression is here allowable. It was found that the apparatus would work satisfactorily for some time, and then the relative proportions of the mixture would change, and an explosion might have been the result. Experiments consuming days were made to discover a method of averting this danger, but they were unsuccessful, until it was observed that the change in the composition of the mixture of gas and air took place when the gasometer began to rise or fall—the back-pressure due to friction when the holder was rising or its absence when falling being sufficient to change the conditions. THE distillation of bituminous coals at what is commonly termed low temperature, and the quantities, nature and adaptabilities of the products have been the subject of considerable experimentation, during recent years. Fortunately, the earlier work in this country was done by men whose scientific training qualified them properly to record and interpret the results of-their experiments. The work of Prof. Parr, of the University of Illinois, is especially notable in this respect. Prof. Parr's work, added to that of English experimenters, demonstrated certain things to a degree which is generally regarded as convincing. They have proved that a caking bituminous coal, when subjected to a temperature of not more than 1000° F. (preferably somewhat less) will yield light tar having low specific gravity (about 1.06) and high value; also, that this yield, with a given coal, will depend upon the percentage of hydrocarbons in the coal, the maximum temperature used, and the promptness with which the distillate gases are removed. It is assumed that air is excluded from the retort, and that the coal is subjected to heat for a sufficient time to drive off all of the tarry hydrocarbons. The results attained in the first, or low-temperature stage of the Carbocoal process, recently described by C. T. Malcolmson, corroborate these general principles. It is the purpose of the writer to describe other work of a practical nature, directed toward the commercial adaptation of these principles, which was begun nearly two years ago; this investigation was assisted by A. J. Sayers, of the Link-Belt Co., and Carl Scholz.

The mining districts of the first order' of the western United States (and borders) are those named on Fig. 1. These fall into four groups: (1) in the eastern outliers of the Rocky Mountain system; (2) in the Rocky Mountain system itself; (3) in the Great Basin; and (4) in the Sierras and Coast ranges. Of these four groups, the first three are almost entirely of Tertiary age and are within a belt of compressive folding which we shall call the Rocky Mountain-Great Basin thrust arc. The backbone of this belt is shown by the line BAC. The position of the ore districts in this belt indicates a conformance to linear elements of the continental pattern. These are additional to the peripheral elements emphasized by Butler.2 Nature of the Thrust Arc The thrust arc separates regions of contrasted kinds. To the east of it are flat-lying plateaus interrupted by earlier mountain folds; to the west, sunken basins, in which block-faulted ranges lie like an anchored fleet in a sea of desert wash or lava. The. cross-sections are as shown in Fig. 2. The backbone of the belt is the upward and eastward moving block represented by the Glacier Park, the Wasatch, and the Virgin mountains, successively. The structure represented on these sections is the culmination of events which began far back in geologic time and throughout which a contrast has existed between the regions east and west of the backbone line. The opening session of the Institute was held at Hazle Hall, Tuesday evening, October 27th, with a large attendance of members. President Raymond called the Institute to order, and after a few introductory remarks, introduced Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, President of the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain, and Honorary Member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Mr. Bell was received with great applause, and made his acknowledgments in a brief speech, of which the following is the substance: He desired to thank the Institute personally for the honor conferred upon him in his election to membership, and also for the invitation extended last year to the body of which he was President. The difficulty felt by many members of the Iron and Steel Institute, of leaving for a long journey the works of which they had charge, aggravated by special industrial troubles at the time of the invitation, had obliged them to conclude that it could not then be accepted in a fitting manner. The iron .manufacture of this country is a subject of great interest to Englishmen, who look with pride upon the achievements on this side the water of the descendants of a common ancestry. His own reception in this country had far surpassed in cordiality even the well-grounded anticipations he had formed from the assurances of the President and other friends. Notwithstanding the flattering manner in which his friend, in introducing him to the Institute, had spoken of his contributions to the science of iron metallurgy, he could not take to himself alone the significance of this welcome. He knew it was a recognition of the services rendered by the body which he had the honor to represent; and he was glad to see present a member of that body, Mr. Thomas Whitwell, who had fortunately been able to make the journey at this time, arid whom he had had the pleasure of meeting on the shores of Lake Champlain. The Lehigh Valley Coal Co. finished the rebuilding of its Drifton No. 2 breaker at Drifton, Pa., in the summer of 1917. The new construction comprises an addition and the complete remodeling of the old breaker. It is of interest to note that the old structure was the first iron breaker erected in the anthracite region. The Old Breaker This old breaker was built by the Cross Creek Coal Co., under the direction of the late Eckley B. Coxe, in 1888-89, and was fully described by him in the Transactions1. The columns were cast iron, 8, 10 and 12 in. square. The floors and partitions in pockets were cast-iron ribbed plates. The struts were cast iron of "H" section; the other members were of structural iron either rolled I-beams or built-up sections. The sizes of the rolled beams varied from 6 to 20 in. deep, while the built-up sections, made of plates and angles, varied from 6 to 63 in. in depth, so that there apparently was no rule to determine the type of section used. In the remodeling of the old structure, practically everything was taken down excepting the columns and roof, and such beams as were necessary for temporary construction purposes, and, therefore, a close inspection of the old structural members could be made and the effect of the acid water on them could be noted. The cast-iron members were but slightly attacked by the water, while the wrought-iron beams, in the wet places, were corroded almost to failure. The following are analyses of cast-iron, wrought-iron, and structural-steel samples taken from the old and the new structure.

THE members of the society are doubtless aware that the production of American Bessemer steel works is constantly increasing ; that the same converters and machinery are doing more work every year. This enlarged output is due to various causes, chiefly the following: 1st. Better organization-better knowledge on the part of both managers and men, of the plant and the process ; of the way to economize the more exhausting labor, and of the arrangement of the details of labor and operations so that they shall not conflict; also, more pluck-a greater willingness to take risks, or, more properly, such an intimate knowledge of the nature and capacities of the refractory tory linings in various stages of disrepair, and the probable be- . havior of the fluid metal at various stages of its treatment, that the precise nature of the risk may be better known, so that the works may be crowded to their full capacity. In the early practice, after getting four or five consecutive heats in a day, the men preferred to "let well enough alone," and to devote the remaining time to preparation for another turn. Now, thirty, and sometimes forty heats are regularly made during the twenty-four hours, day after day, without the frequent occurrence and without the fear of breakdowns or "messes," as the spilling of steel charges was graphically named in Sheffield. 2d. KIRKLAND LAKE, the second most important gold area in Ontario, is situated in the north¬eastern part of the Province, 392 miles north of Toronto by railway. It is reached by a five-mile macadam road from Swastika, a village on the Temiska-ming & Northern Ontario Railway, 63 miles north of Cobalt. Gold, was first found at Kirkland Lake in 1911 by W. H. Wright. on claim No. 1830, now a part of the Wright-Hargreaves mine. In January, 1912, the metal associated with various tellurides was found by Harry Oakes and George Tough on the Tough-Oakes property 3/4 mile east of the lake. The shipping of hand-sorted, extremely high-grade ore, valued at $350 to $450 in gold per ton, from this property created great interest and resulted in numerous other discoveries. The early developments of the area, however, were much retarded on account of war conditions, labor troubles, and owing to the ore zone being largely under the bed of Kirkland Lake or in drift-covered depressions. It was not until early in 1918, when the Lake Shore Co. found its rich orebody under the bottom of Kirkland Lake, that the various ore deposits were believed to be more or less continuous along one main vein system. From that time most of the work in the area has been done along the "main vein" with gratifying results. Production began late in 1912, and up to the end of March, 1923, the five producing mines have yielded gold, with some silver, valued at $8,379,403. The production in 1922 was $2,162,548; that of 1923 should be over $3,000,000. The same general assemblage of rocks which occurs at. Kirkland Lake extends easterly for many miles to Larder Lake and beyond; hence there is a large area containing formations favorable for gold prospecting. In this general area numerous prospects are being operated, and among the most promising ones, may be mentioned the Argonaut, Crown Reserve and Asso-ciated Goldfields near Larder Lake. A 25-mile branch railway is now being constructed across the mineral area from Swastika to Larder Lake, passing through Kirkland Lake.

ALTHOUGH many oil fields have been, and still are being, discovered in Oklahoma, the geology and structure of most of them have not become familiar to the general public because of the delay in securing government geological surveys and the reluctance of oil companies and other interested parties to give out their "inside information." Therefore, until official surveys are available, it behooves us to publish geological results as soon as possible. Fortunately the writer has been authorized by the Cement Field Oil Co. to publish his data on the Cement field, Caddo County at this time. LOCALITY AND DESCRIPTION The Cement field is situated in the part of Oklahoma known generally, until recently, as "Healdton fields," and lies 60 mi. (96 km.) northwest of the Healdton field proper. Like the Healdton field, it forms an approximate ellipse, trending northwest and southeast through the village of Cement on the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad, on which it is reached in 2 ½ hours from Oklahoma City. In its geological structure, the field constitutes an anticline over 13 mi. (21 km.) long and from 1 to 3 mi. wide; the point of greatest width being not far from its intersection by the above-named railroad. The major axis trends north 75° west from the village of Cement; but eastward appears deflected (if field interpretations are correct) to about south. 45° east. About 5 mi. south lies an approximately parallel syncline, which may be conveniently called the Cyril syncline, the south and west boundaries of which may be distant many miles, but forming a closed basin', south of the Cement anticline. The position of the offsetting synclinal axis, which is believed to lie north and east of Cement, has not been discovered.
