The International Smelting Co. concentrator at Tooele, Utah, first operated on a custom basis for the treatment of lead-zinc-iron ores on Nov. 1, 1924, with a capacity of 500 tons per day. On May 1, 1925, the capacity was increased to 1000 tons per day by the addition of another 500-ton section. The concentrator has since operated on the two-section basis, each treating 500 tons per day entirely by flotation. Laboratory and Test Mill In connection with the concentrator, a well-equipped laboratory and small continuous testing plant are maintained. The flotation equipment in the test plant is of both the Callow and Mineral Separations Sub-"A" types, so that actual concentrator conditions may be duplicated as closely as possible. Purchasing of Ore A new shipper usually sends to the plant a 25 to 50-lb. samplc, representative of the ore to be shipped. Batch flotation tests are made on this sample to determine its amenability to the concentrator treatment flowsheet and reagent combinations. The results of these tests, which are accurately correlated with those obtained at the concentrator, both as to grades of products and recoveries, determine the actual value of the ore as submitted in the ore purchasing department's treatment schedule. Hearty cooperation has existed at all times between the ore purchasing and operating departments in the selection of ores as conccntrator feed. Ores Treated The basic tonnages for mixtures on the two sections come from the Park City and Bingham mining districts. One of the operations of the J. L. Shiely Co. is quarrying in a hard granite gneiss with intrusions of gabbro or trap. During the winter of 1948-1949 the quarry ramp was lowered about 30 ft and during the 1949 season practically all drilling was done from the quarry floor, developing a face from 72 to 83 ft for the entire quarry area. As the result of my stridy of them I came to the conclusion that, together with the oil of Hardin county (since extended to Beaumont by the work of Capt. Lucas) and the rock-salt and gypsum-deposits of the coast country, extending southward to the Rio Grande, these were simply a continuation of similar deposits in Louisiana described by Hilgard, Hopkins, and others; and I recommended the sinking of wells wberever they were found.

A preceding paragraph treats of the irregular manner in which ore deposits occur and the complex factors that control their distribution; the occurrence of metals in oreshoots in individual deposits is equally irregular, and the factors that control such segregation are equally complex. While the dimensions of oreshoots in individual deposits may not be foretold with any degree of accuracy, the occurrence of ore in shoots is not accidental, but is controlled by laws some of which are understood. Any one familiar with permutations and combinations who stops to consider the variety of factors that control ore deposition, and their varying relative importance, will admit that the science of economic geology must advance greatly before the occurrence of oreshoots may be predicted accurately in advance of exploration. The segregation of minerals in any oreshoot must be referred to some condition, or combination of conditions, local to the oreshoot as compared with the remainder of the deposit of low- grade or barren minerals. Among the localizing factors that have been recognized are, in filled fissures, the amount and distribution of open spaces available for ore deposition, and in replacement deposits, the degree of brecciation giving access to the replacing solutions; the intersection of veins with other veins, dikes, sheeted zones, or porous strata; the impounding of solutions by impervious strata; and the differing precipitative influences of enclosing rocks. A large proportion of important and well- defined oreshoots, especially in deposits of deep-seated origin, are not assignable to any of these factors. The Liberty tunnels extend through a very steep hill in Pittsburgh (locally called Mount Washington) for a distance of slightly over a mile. The two tunnels parallel each other and are 59 ft. apart, center to center (Fig. 1) They are for vehicular traffic, and in each there is ample space for two lines of vehicles. Northbound traffic, toward downtown Pitts- burgh, is confined to the east tunnel and southbound traffic to the west tunnel. The South Hills residential district is separated from downtown Pittsburgh by Mount Washington, a steeply rising escarpment south of and adjacent to the Monongahela River. The results of a study of the open-hearth process from the physicochemical viewpoint are given. This study includes experimentation in small laboratory furnaces and in standard 100-ton furnaces. The behavior of manganese, carbon and phosphorus are quantitatively explained. The action of "residual" manganese is discussed with reference to its relation to iron oxide dissolved in the metal. The solubility of CO in steel and its relation to dissolved FeO and carbon is given. The equation for phosphorus elimination has been tested out on a 200-ton furnace and the results are given in the text. The effect of temperature and slag composition on the elimination of metalloids in the basic open-hearth process has been qualitatively understood since the early days of steel making. The quantitative effect has, however, only recently been brought to attention. The effect of slag composition has received more attention than that of temperature, primarily because the range of finishing temperatures in the basic open-hearth process is small compared to the large variations found in the composition of the slag at different periods during the process, and to the variations occurring with the use of raw materials of different degrees of impurity. The effect of slag composition on the elimination of metalloids has been studied by Styril from the thermochemical standpoint. This method is open to serious errors, in that thermochemical data at 2900' F. are very inaccurate and in many cases completely lacking. Feild2 has calculated equilibrium constants from the rate at which the metalloids are eliminated. The effect of slag viscosity on rate of elimination will affect the constants calculated by this method. Whitely,a Colcough4 and others have used slag compositions as the basis for calculation of constants by which the extent of elimination may be calculated.

In view of the unfavorable discovery trend that has set in during the past few years, it seems permissible to infer that the large, more easily found crude reserves in Louisiana are now known. Without doubt, many new producing areas will be located, but in the light of development during the past few years the majority of new areas probably will be found at greater depths and from relatively poorer sands. f Although sufficient reserves exist in Louisiana to last at the present rate of production for a considerable period, additional reserves must be found in more intensive development of the presently known structures. In order to ensure the greatest ultimate recovery from such structures, the most advanced technical methods must be employed in their exploitation. Wherever possible, cycling and repressuring plants should be installed. 'here are presently in Louisiana, especially in south Louisiana, a great many fields that contain gas-condensate reservoirs. These reservoirs cannot be produced for their liquid hydrocarbon content under present conditions without wasting an enormous quantity of gas and creating underground waste. Although some of these reservoirs are being produced, such production must be considered in the nature of a salvage operation rather than as a sound economic proposition. Such reservoirs, however, can become profitable ven- tures through the use of cycling and repressuring plants. Cycling operations now operating in Louisiana have increased the ultimate recovery from gas-condensate reservoirs anywhere from 10 to 30 per cent. Cycling operations will also provide a considerable reserve of gas, without which Louisiana cannot hope to develop any program of industrialization. During the past year, Louisiana attained the rank of third among the oil-producing states of this country. With a proper program of exploitation and development, and with emphasis on conservation, Louisiana can maintain this position for a great many years. Production On Dec. 31, 1943, oil and/or gas were being. produced in 52 parishes, or 81 per cent of all the parishes in the state. Thirty-three of the parishes produced oil and gas, 14 produced oil, and 5 produced solely gas. Tensas Parish in north Louisiana and Assumption Parish in south Louisiana formerly contained no producing fields but during 1943 joined the ranks of the producing parishes. Twenty-three new fields, including one rediscovery, were found during 1943-—a rate of discovery almost comparable to that of the preceding year. Eleven of these new discoveries were either gas or gas-condensate fields. Thus, the trend of development in finding new reserves was also comparable to that of 1942. Many reasons of considerable merit have been advanced to account for the discouraging lack of crude-oil reserves found during the past year. None are, however, completely satisfactory.

The paper outlines the parameters required for an estimation of the size of chain pillars for longwall coal mining. The principal parameters are: stress distribution around the edge of the extracted coal panel, strength properties and geometry of the pillars. The principal thrust of the paper is directed toward correlating the chain pillar strength to the magnitude and direction of strata load expected to act on the pillars. A brief review of the pillar strength formulae pertinent to chain pillar stability is given. The chain pillars are categorized as 'yielding' or 'stiff', depending on the duty required of them. The coal measure strata is classified as 'soft' or 'hard' conditions, the degree of competence of the roof and floor greatly influencing the caving characteristics of the gob and the stability of the roof chain pillars.

The objective of delineation drilling is to provide a data base for the tonnage and grade estimates required to evaluate the economics of mine development. As drilling information is accumulated, geological risk is reduced and more reliable estimates of tonnage and grade are obtained. Investment in drilling is justified by the benefits which result from improving the reliability of the economic criteria evaluated. These benefits are subject to diminishing returns, i.e. as drilling information is accumulated the reliability of the economic criteria evaluated is improved but at a decreasing rate. At the same time, costs are incurred -- the direct investment cost associated with additional drilling and the time cost of delaying possible production revenues. The economic sampling limit is de- fined by the point at which the marginal benefits from drilling investment just balance the marginal costs. The paper describes the formulation of an economic model to optimize investment in delineation drilling. The model is applied to a simulated mineral deposit to illustrate the economic effects of a sequential drilling program.

Pyrite has been subjected to xanthate adsorption experiments in order to determine the nature of adsorption. The identification of adsorbed species by means of IR spectroscopy, as well as UV, shows that the dixanthogen adsorption is undoubtedly predominant on pyrite surface. The rest potential measured in a xanthate solution coincides with the redox potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen couple. Considering all the factors together, the adsorption mechanism of dixanthogen on pyrite has been proposed as This mechanism is consistent with the "passive" character of pyrite. From the measurement of the redox potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen couple in the homologous series, a rule similar to that for surface tensions proposed by Traube is also applicable. The polarization experiments were conducted on pyrite in a solution containing xanthate. In the anodic polarization, xanthate is observed to oxidize to dix- anthogen, which depresses oxygen evolution on py rite at higher potential levels. In spite of the importance of the presence of pyrite in the flotation of sulfide minerals, not many studies have been made on the xanthate-pyrite system in the absence of an activator or a depressant. In an early study by Gaudin and Wilkinson,' it was pointed out that no ferric xanthate was formed on a pyrite surface, while in another study Gaudin and his collaborators2 proved the formation of a very small amount of ferric xanthate. Afterwards, Gaudin et al.3 studied the pyrite-xanthate system with a radiometric technique and found indications of the presence of adsorbed dixanthogen on pyrite surfaces. Mamiya4 studied the flotation behavior of the pyrite-xanthate system and also suggested the possibility of dixanthogen. Recently, Fuerstenau and his coworkers at The Colorado School of Mines5 studied the role of dixanthogen in the xanthate flotation of pyrite and discussed the problem in terms of such properties as oxidation potential, zeta potential, flotation recovery, pH of solution, etc. However, the mechanism of dixanthogen adsorption at the pyrite-water interface is not yet understood. This paper is concerned with an electrochemical in-vestigation through which the mechanism of dixanthogen adsorption on pyrite is interpreted. In the USA the cost of steel ribs for tunnels approximates $100 million each year. European practice has long since abandoned heavy steel ribs for tunnel support, and tunnel coats in Europe (normalized for wages) are about half the costs incurred in the USA. A feeling has existed for some time that the USA practices of supporting tunnels with heavy steel ribs have been overly conservative. The USA practice is based on rock load coefficients by Karl Terzaghi. In 1946, Karl Terzaghi published a tunnel rock classification system (Terzaghi, 1946), with the rock loads on tunnels predicted for each class of rock. No data on real rock loads were presented by Terzaghi and his rock load coefficients may have been largely intuitive. His classification system and associated predicted rock loads have been widely used in the USA. Each rock class, taken from Terzaghi's classification system, is assumed to generate loads of loosened rock resting as dead load. The dimensions of the loosened rock are described by rock load coefficients multiplied by the tunnel diameter. The resulting rock loads are used by design engineers, contractors and agencies to size supporting steel ribs. Terzaghi clearly stated that he had conservatively assumed high rock loads for his classes 4, 5 and 6 to take a presumed effect of groundwater into account. If the tunnel was not affected by ground- water, Terzaghi stated those rock loads should be reduced by 50 percent. Twenty two years later Tor Brekke (1968) wrote a paper clearly showing that based on observation of more than 250 tunnels groundwater does not affect tunnel rock loads. In 1969, Deere, et al., published measurements made on a number of tunnels, and a well-known curve was drawn by Deere to illustrate Terzaghios coefficients graphically. Deere's text stated that Terzaghi's predicted rock loads were too high and should be reduced. Cording and Deere (1972) more recently published data indicating that very large real rock caverns and chambers were being successfully built using rock bolts, which can take only a very limited rock load, thus indicating that real rock load is much smaller than Terzaghi or even Deere predicted.

Little data exists on the high strain rate behavior of geologic materials. Uniaxial stress tests by Kumar1 and by Serdengecti and Boozer2 present some results to strain rates in the range 10 to 103 per sec. The two references cited are the only ones the authors found for high strain rates. Techniques for experiments at high strain rates are not well developed and, in general, leave questions with respect to interpretation of data when the material behaves in a brittle manner. The most reliable data at very high strain rates (104 to 106 per sec) are found in some recent flat-plate work3-5 where experimenters have impacted one plate into another, thereby creating a uniaxial strain loading. The standard uniaxial stress-strain curves cannot be obtained directly from these tests; however, yield (or fracture) may be studied by measuring the "elastic" wave magnitude. These data then may be compared to uniaxial stress data by resorting to some preassumed yield/fracture criteria. Even with the most liberal interpretation of existing data, little can be said of the effects of high strain rate on stiffness, yield/fracture, and post-fracture behavior of geologic materials. It is the purpose of this work to begin to add to the understanding. The data presented here are intended to provide material information for use in calculating the response of geologic materials to high rate deformations. These data can be applied directly to determine parameters such as the elastic modulus and Poisson ratio as a function of stress. Furthermore, these data can be used to derive an understanding of yield/fracture and the effect of rate on the yield/fracture surface. The work presented is a first step, and is

MANY processes for cleaning coal that are in use depend primarily on physical properties of coal and refuse other than specific gravity and surface conditions relating to froth flotation. These properties are shape, coefficient of sliding friction, resilience, friability, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity. In many of these processes specific gravity does have some effect and many separators are designed to utilize more than one of the physical properties cited. Although the processes described herein do not have a widespread application, yet for specific coals and specific conditions, they are economically important. A problem confronting many coal-mining districts is the marketing of the slacks or screenings and dust passing the final sizing screens. Processes in commercial use installed primarily to increase the form value, and hence the market value, of these slacks and dusts include briquetting, packaging, and low-temperature carborization. MECHANICAL PICKERS Machines utilizing shape, fictional resistance, and differences in resilience of coal and impurities are usually called mechanical pickers. They require a closely sized feed, therefore their use is confined to the pea, nut, and egg sizes. Various types of these devices are described by Berrisford, 1, 2 Taggart, 3 and Peele. 4 Shape In general, coal differs in shape from its accompanying dirt throughout the range of commercial sizes. Coal, breaking into roughly, cubical particles, contains a greater number of axes that are approximately the same length than does the dirt. The latter, consisting of pieces of slate and shale and lenses of pyrite, is flatter in nature. Further, flat coal often has a dirty, slaty appearance, even though of high quality. Mechanical pickers known as flat pickers, or "flatters," are widely used in the Pennsylvania anthracite region to remove flat coal from the final clean coal. This practice greatly improves the appearance of the final market product.

INTRODUCTION The maximum yield of washed coal and the required ash and sulfur contents are the only performance factors of direct, immediate interest to any operator. Yet since the turn of the century coal preparation engineers have repeatedly sought more sophisticated performance criteria that could be used to draw comparisons between different cleaning operations and to permit generalizations about types of cleaning equipment or kinds of coal. Proliferation of efficiency formulas resulted. Hardly a year goes by, and certainly not an International Coal Preparation Congress, without the introduction of some new formula or some new concept of an existing criterion. This is merely the usual quest for improvement, because the performance criteria available today, although highly useful, are imperfect. Moreover, they are not as widely understood as they might be. The First International Coal Preparation Conference, which was held in Paris in 1950, accomplished a great deal toward establishing uniformity in terminology and methods of expressing cleaning results; the proceedings of that conference provide a wealth of detailed information on the various performance criteria, their uses and their limitations. For ease of discussion, the various performance criteria can conveniently be classed according to the degree to which they are dependent on the density composition of the raw coal treated. Some are directly dependent, some are only indirectly dependent, and some are, under certain circum- stances, essentially independent. DEPENDENT CRITERIA The yield and ash content of a washed coal are directly dependent on the washability characteristics of the raw coal from which it is derived. Thus, they are manifestly unsuited to comparing the performance of different plants, because no two plant feeds are the same. In fact, yield and ash content, by themselves, are inadequate for even routine day-to-day control. The continuous variation that occurs in the amount of impurity in raw coal, and sometimes in the float ash, make it impossible to tell whether a reduction in yield or an increase in the ash content of the washed coal results from any malfunction or misadjustment of the cleaning equipment. Recovery Efficiency For many years the most popular performance criteria that are only indirectly dependent on the washability characteristics of the raw coal have been efficiency formulas. MORE or less contradictory findings as to the most satisfactory feed for concentration tables of the Wilfley type is shown by the diversity of opinion among experimenters. Prof. R. H. Richards,l as a result of his work, favors classification. On the other hand the work of Messrs. Cox, Gibbins, and Porter,' of McGill University, points in general to the desirability of screen-sized feed The ore used was obtained from the West mill of the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Co., Kellogg, Idaho, and consisted of argentiferous galena in a gangue of quartzite and siderite. The natural feed was taken from the launder supplying the Fahrenwald classifier. Classified feed was collected from each of the ten spigots of this same classifier. From the natural feed the screen-sized feed was pre- pared in the laboratory. All three types of table feed were therefore derived from the actual mill circuit of a large plant.

High-grade cobalt concentrates were produced from the complex Blackbird ore with very good recovery in continuous pilot-plant operations in which a low-grade bulk cobaltite-pyrite flotation concentrate was roasted in a multiple-hearth furnace to oxidize the pyrite selectively. The cobaltite was floated from the resulting calcine.
