The United States Geological Survey recently published Bulletin 690, which contains those papers dealing with zinc and copper. ores at Ophir, Utah; gravel deposits in Arkansas, with special' reference to their possible utilization as a source of hard pebbles for grinding mills; phosphate deposits in the Uinta Mountains, Utah; quicksilver deposits in the Phoenix Mountains, Ariz.; and manganese deposits near Butte and in Madison County, Mont. This bulletin is completely descriptive and contains important illustrations and maps.

Each mine is divided into drilling and blasting, overburden haulage, ore haulage, crushing and grinding, and lighting system. The fourth National Exposition of Chemical Industries will be held in the Grand Central Palace, New York, during the week of Sept. 23, 1918. Dr. Bacon, of the advisory committee, is now head of the Chemical Warfare Section of the National Army, and a member of General Pershing's staff. The coming Exposition will be the largest ever held, and it will be necessary to use four floors of the Grand Central Palace. The exposition is a war-time necessity, and regarding it as such, each exhibitor is planning his exhibit so that it will be of. the greatest benefit to the country.

The Howe Memorial Lecture, in memory of Henry Marion Howe, Past President of the Institute, was authorized in April, 1923, as an annual address to be delivered by invitation under the auspices of the Institute by an individual of recognized and outstanding attainment in the science and practice of iron and steel metallurgy or metallography, chosen by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of the Iron and Steel Division. AIME is closing the books on its first 100 years. In the next year the meetings and many papers will doubtless be filled with statistics on the growth of AIME, and, incidentally, on the mining industry. Let's try to keep our cool and avoid breaking our arms patting ourselves on the back. AIME, nationally and locally, runs on the drive and dynamism of a rather small number of its members. If you look at the annual SME Blue Book of national officers and committee members, you will be struck by the repetition of the same names throughout. Trend for a few men to shoulder the burdens and responsibilities can be seen on the local level, too.

LOUIS Buchman walks down the hall of Kennecott's Chrysler Building offices as if he belonged there, but it wasn't his setting of choice. The West has become his home, that and the scene of operations is there. When he was a child his family came to the United States from Latvia and settled in Michigan's Upper Peninsula where he went to school and on to Michigan College of Mines. Graduating with B.S. and E.M. degrees, he headed west in 1907 to the mining camp of Ophir, in the state where he spent the bulk of his career - Utah.

Surface mine operators often gamble that the savings gained from elimination of haul-road subbase preparation will offset any potential loss in production due to deteriorating roads. According to the authors of a manual on haul-road construction, this practice yields results that are almost always undesirable. The lack of suitable weight-bearing material under the road surface permits extensive rutting, sinkage, and overall deterioration of the roadway, and a great deal of maintenance work will be needed to keep the road usable. In addition, say Walter W. Kaufman of Skelly and Loy, and James C. Ault, USBM Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center, adverse road conditions pose a serious threat to vehicular controllability and create unsafe haulage road segments.

MORE and more hydrocyclones are being installed in beneficiation plants. This recent rapid increase is of special interest in the history of beneficiation, since development of the hydro- cyclone appears to have swung in a circle. To avoid any chance of confusion, it would be well first to review the accepted definitions. The size of a cyclone is expressed as the diameter of the cylindrical section. Size of the inlet orifice- which may be circular, square, or rectangular- is expressed as a diameter, or as width and length, or as an area (in square inches). The angle of a cyclone is expressed as the total included angle. The overflow or finest classification fraction leaves the cyclone through the vortex finder. The underflow or coarsest classification fraction leaves through the apex opening.

When I first went to Arizona in 1925, mining was primarily an underground job. Ajo, Sacramento Hill in Bisbee and Jerome were the only open pit operations in the state. Thousands of men, however, were employed in underground mining at Morenci, Miami, Inspiration, Globe, Ray, Bisbee, and Superior. The grade of ore in the larger operations was about 1-1/2% copper while a few of the smaller ones mined ore better than 2% Cu. In Utah, the Bingham pit was doing well and growing; in Montana, the vein mines of Butte still yielded ore running 6% Cu.
