Over the last 80 years the conveyor belt has advanced from the troughed rubber belt to those with standard steel cable cores and those which can navigate curves or climb steep inclines. Now the latest generation of belt conveyors can claim hitherto unheard of capacities of 20,000 tph and single flight lengths well exceeding 16,000 feet. The stranded steel cable core belt is principally responsible for the spectacular improvement in load carrying ability of belt conveyors. The allowable working tension of these belts ranges from 2,500 lb per in. of belt width for 1/4 in. diam cable to 4,000 lb per in, for 3/8 in. diam cable. These ratings far exceed the 240 lb per in. per ply for rayon or nylon construction, and 30 lb per in. per ply for a lowcost cotton fabric.

With some uncertainty as to the type, rate and scope of adoption of air pollution control regulations, and with limited information on the availability of low-sulfur fuels, it is possible at best to make only a rough assessment of the impact of such regulations on coal. It is apparent from the following discussion that regulations of the type already effective or being considered, if adopted and enforced on a widespread basis over a short-term period and if substitute fuels were available, both quantitatively and economically, could result in a loss of more than one-half of coal's markets. Depending on the areal sequence of adoption of such regulations, some areas would be able to obtain limited amounts of low-sulfur coals. Others would not. Because of the usually greater distances from the large industrial coal consuming areas to new sources of coal supply, and because of the higher mine prices for low-sulfur coals, the delivered prices of such coals as might be available would be much higher than those for high-sulfur coals. A large and sudden demand for low-sulfur coals would exert further upward pressure on prices.

RECENTLY, we were asked to name the greatest contribution to progress in mining technology during the past 25 years. Immediately, the introduction of the pneumatic hammer for making blastholes came to mind because it can be credited with speeding the excavation of rock and the elimination of hand drilling. Possibly this answer was so spontaneous because we were working on this "drilling issue" Of MINING ENGINEERING. Present drilling tools have devel¬oped so rapidly, that a great deal of engineering is. required in the selection of bits, steel, and machines for the drilling conditions at each mine. Formerly a modicum of engineering was utilized in selection of equipment for it was purchased from manufacturer preference. With the development of alloy drill steels, tungsten-carbide bits, throwaway bits, and the jackleg drill, mining companies began doing more experimental work before making selections. It is unfortunately true, that each operator must begin at the beginning by doing his own test work before choosing his drilling method, and tools. Some of this work has been done very well-under controlled conditions and obtaining proper data on the variables. Such data should be accumulated from the various mines, tabulated, and published. Such a volume would be of tremendous help to the small operator in selecting equipment and would permit the research departments of the larger companies to formulate some measure of rock drillability and to undertake more specialized research on the different phases of drilling.

W. N. Triplett (Geology of the Silver-Lead-Zinc Deposits of the Avalos-Providencia District of Mexico, P. 583) was born in Tecumseh, Mich., and attended the University of Michigan and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1912 to 1917 he worked for Moctezuma Copper Co., a Phelps Dodge subsidiary at Nacozari, Sonora, Mex. He served in Army as Second Lieutenant Field Artillery from 1917 to 1918 and from 1919 to 1922 returned to Moctezuma Copper Co. From 1922 to 1952 he has been with Compania Minera de Penoles, S. A., a subsidiary of American Metal Co., Monterrey, N. L., Mexico in Unit Dept. as chief geologist and at present is consulting geologist. Mining geology and operation is of particular interest to Mr. Triplett. He presented a previous paper before with M. W. Hayward entitled, "Occurrence of Lead-Zinc Ores in Dolomitic Limestones in Northern Mexico." Besides being an AIME member, he holds membership in Society of Economic Geologists. Fishing, hunting and photography are his favorite hobbies.

VEINS of asphalt fill and seal vertical fault fissures at the surface of a large domal structure near Bejucal, Havana Province (about 19 miles south of Havana), so this structure was chosen, by Barnabas Bryan, for the drilling of a well on the theory that oil had risen from below the Cretaceous and had entered the porous sands of the Upper Cretaceous, which outcrop in three places within a radius of 12 miles. The asphalt in these fault fissures, he contended, had sealed them and thereby prevented further dissipation of the oil. Furthermore, he found, in the asphalt, specimens of sand and lime that were indications of its upward migratory character. Ralph Arnold, who discovered the Upper Cretaceous sand saturated with oil in the outcrop near Mariel, in Pinar del Rio Province, has compared the Bejucal structure with the Santa Maria field in California. The surface rock of the structure is Oligocene limestone and shales, thin, bedded and well stratified. This formation has, heretofore, been assigned to the Eocene with a thickness of 3000 ft. and locally called the Nazareno formation. Paleontologic examination of well cuttings, however, has disclosed Oligocene fossils at a depth of 1142 ft. and Upper Cretaceous fossils at a depth of 1541 ft., leaving approximately 400 ft. of very parenthetical Eocene. Whether there is any Eocene in this structure has not been determined.

Spencer Gulf takes off from the Great Australian Bight cutting a 200 mile deep wedge of water into the South Australia coastline. A pale winter sun shines yellowly on the choppy surface of this body of water which is progressively more salty as it approaches Port Augusta at the head of the Gulf. Once Port Augusta thrived as a grain port and the speedy clipper ships began or ended their legendary races there. On the eastern shores of Spencer Gulf, farm land spreads away from the water's edge. The western side of the gulf meets marginal grazing land of acacia tree and salt bush. Part way down the gulf, there are two industrial towns facing each other from opposite shores; Port Pirie on the east and Whyalla on the west. These towns are like half brothers, the common parent being the founders of Broken Hill Pty. Ltd., (BHP) who began lead smelting at Port Pirie and discovered iron ore near Whyalla needed for the lead smelting process. The iron deposits later became the inspiration for BHP's iron and steel business.

(written cliscussiont).-I am inclined to the view that the change in physical properties encountered in the material with which the authors are working is due to the relief of internal strains. The statement, on page 1.098 of their paper, calling attention to the fact that this phenomenon disappeared when the material was rolled into 1 7/8 -in. square billets is of particular interest. It is certain that the internal strains set lip by cooling in a small billet of this size would be much less than those produced in a billet having a larger cross-section cooling under the same conditions. The statement that the physical properties of a given test bar were materially changed by standing has been brought to my attention in connection with the testing of gun forgings. I have made a number of observations on forgings produced at Watertown Arsenal to ascertain whether any change in ductility was produced by the aging of the test specimens. The results were always negative, but this can be explained by the fact that ii gun forging is generally a forging that has been quenched and subsequently drawn at a relatively high temperature.

DRAINAGE water from coal mines is probably the most serious water pollution problem today, varying in importance according to location of the mines and geological structure. Drainage may be either acid or alkaline in character. Acid discharge, the most severely detrimental to a stream, is caused by natural oxidation of the sulfuritic material (FeS2) in the strata associated with the coal seam. Since the acid is the result of a natural reaction the acid water differs because it does not cease with abandonment of the mining operations. There is no known economical method of neutralizing acid mine water or any practical method to prevent oxidation of exposed pyrite. Since production of acid from a mine does not stop when mining stops, the total quantity produced depends entirely upon the excavated areas. The increasing volume of acid water in many mines has greatly increased operating costs. Pumping is expensive and acid mine waters are destructive of all equipment, especially metals in pumps and piping, and necessitate the use of corrosion-resistant materials. Discharge of the acid mine drainage into streams neutralizes their normal alkalinity, causes them to become acid, and produces an environment unfavorable for aquatic life and unsuited for industrial or domestic use without costly treatment.

Flotation, as we know it today, is a physiochemical method of concentrating finely ground ores. The process involves chemical treatment of an ore pulp to create conditions favorable for the attachment of certain mineral particles to air bubbles which are carried to the surface of the ore pulp for removal. Frother reagents, combined with air and the agitation mechanism, produce the effective bubbles in a flotation cell. A method of analysis is presented to evaluate the effect of frother reductions and additions on a bank of flotation cells, and to economically determine if and to what extent frother reductions and additions are justified. Comparative evaluations of different frother systems, as well as the amount of frother used in a given flotation machine, cannot be made on the frother cost alone. An indepth study must be made to evaluate any given frother as applied to a particular ore body. The recovery of a given mineral is as dependent on the amount of frother as on the type of frother used. An actual case study follows in which the amount of frother required by two different flotation machines was used to make a decision as to which unit performed more efficiently based on costs. This same method may be used to evaluate new frothers as well as to determine if a larger frother addition is advisable.

A. B. Cummins (Industrial Minerals Review, P. 164) was born in Los Angeles, Calif. and attended the University of Chicago and University of California. He received a B.S. and Ph.D. degree. He has worked at University of California and as a development and research engineer with Celite Co. He is at the present manager of research at Johns-Manville Co. in Manville, N. J. Dr. Cummins is an AIME member and has presented previous papers before it. He resides in Bound Brook, N. J. Aureal T. Cross (Recent Coal Geology Research, P. 202) was born in Findlay, Ohio. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and the University of Cincinnati. He received major honors at Coe College and was given a National Research Council Fellowship in geology from 1943 to 1944. He was assistant professor at Notre Dame University from 1943 to 1946. Mr. Cross was a paleobotanist with U. S. Bureau of Mines, Central Experiment Station, Pittsburgh. He was assistant professor of geology at West Virginia University from 1949 to date. He holds membership in Geological Society of America, Paleontological Society, Botanical Society, Sigma Xi, and numerous similar societies.

Experimental and smoothed data are presented for the solubility of methane in water for temperatures of 77, 100, 160. 220. 280, and 340°F at prejsures to 10.000 psia. The minimum solubility phenomenon exists within this temperature range to pressures of 10.000 psia. INTRODUCTION The study of hydrocarhon-water systems has been extended to the determination of the solubility of methane in water at pressures to 10.000 psia. The experimental apparatus, and the technique. are the same as that previously reported.' - In the determination of the solubility of methane in water, only two phases were present at temperatures between 100 and 340°F. these being the vapor phase and the water-rich. liquid phase. The determinations involved the agitation of methane and water in an equilibrium cell. withdrawal of a sample from the liquid phase, and the analysis of the sample. The experimental value; determined in this manner are pre9ented in Table I and in Fig. 1. Since experimental and analytical techniques have improved since the initial experiments with this equipment, it was decided to repeat the 77°F isotherm determinations.' No devclopment of major importance has been made in the south central fault-line district of Texas during 1939. Four new fields have been discovcred, all of which appear to be of minor importance, with small wells in the Navarro sand, the Taylor marl or the Austin chalk. Drilling along the fault line has not developed any new prospects in the Edwards lime, the most prolific producing horizon of the district. At the close of the year, a few deep tests for lower producing horizons have been projected and should prove to be of interest, and plans are under way for further development of the Pearsall field, which has been under the control of a single company until recently. Production from the 46 producing fields was maintained at 8,460,000 bbl. for the year, a decrease of approximately 400,000 bbl. under 1938. This decrease is due in part to natural decline of production and in part to decreased allowed production. Approximately 55 producing wells were completed on proven acreage in the Darst Creek and Salt Flat fields. No new lease plays were made during the year, although approximately the same amount of land, 600,000 acres, remained under lease during the year. Some geophysical operations of various types were carried on along the fault-line area itself and also in the Edwards plateau and in the area south and southeast of the main fault line.

The Institute conducts jointly with the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers, certain activities as listed below, and is joint owner with them of certain properties. United Engineering Trustees, Inc. When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society, but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering Societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees, of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which have equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. The interest of the Founders societies, aside from especial trust funds, is now valued at $1,987,793. The A. I. M. E. trustees are William H. Bassett, H. G. Moulton and R. M. Roosevelt. The President of the Board is Harold V. Coes and the Secretary, Alfred D. Flinn.

In the years ahead, the industrial minerals producer will face several major challenges. Not only will he have to market increasing quantities of his product economically, but he will have to do so from lower grade deposits that are farther away from the marketplace. At the same time, he will have to comply with more regulations controlling the handling and disposal of waste products and get along with relatively less available labor than he has at present. Accordingly, industrial minerals developments of the next 30 years will be directed primarily toward helping the producer meet these challenges. There will be greater raw materials usage, new processes, new marketing practices affecting plant location, size and complexity, and maximum automation-all aimed at producing more materials at lower cost. Processes To Make the Most of Materials In future processes for industrial minerals, there will be great emphasis on more or total use of the initial raw materials or plant feed stock. This approach will result in the application of more and more concentration methods to the treatment of industrial minerals-both conventional processes and new ones that might be developed in conjunction with pyro-processing. High-intensity and electrostatic separation are certainly two areas which will see greater use in the field.

THE first difficulty mentioned is that in some instances two or more beds of coal separated by sandstone or slate rocks of considerable thickness in one part of a basin, are found running together in another part. Of course, we may happen to strike first the part of the basin where there is but a single seam, and in this case the bed would appear 60 divide into two or more branches within a short, distance. Such cases are not rare in the anthracite coal-fields. I would suggest as an explanation of this phenomenon the gradual sinking of the peat-marsh-the embryo coal-bed-on one side, and the moving forward of the marsh, so that on one part of the bed the formation of peat would still be progressing, while another part, being under water, would be covered with mud and sand. Thus we have different portions of the same bed of different ages. Now if the sinking of the marsh be stopped for a time, the bed will become thicker in the portions left exposed, and if the sinking now changes in direction, so that the part that had previously gone down commences to rise, we should have the phenomenon of a bed, continuous throughout, with one portion overlying another, and separated from it by rock strata. These are exactly the conditions observed in splitting beds. While one side of the lake is sinking, and the peat marsh moving on in that direction, the other side may be rising,

not weaken. I saw him shortly before he was killed; his conduct under fire was splendid and an inspiration to his men. His loss is felt deeply by all ranks. Thanks to him and to others, who like him, paid the full measure of devotion to their country, our line was held until the critical situation in that vicinity was at an end. He died the true death of a soldier, with his face to the enemy. As we now look back, it is easy to believe that this holding of the line of defense intact by General Carey and his men was a determining factor in the outcome of the war. To have played so important and noble a part in this vital effort as that taken by Perry is assuredly the privilege of few. Our lives, it seems, are like capital entrusted to us to be expended as wisely and effectively as we may. With them we purchase whatever of accomplishment the stuff that is in us permits. It is impossible to escape profound regret that a career so full of the highest promise, and a personality so overflowing with all that is fine and lovable, should have been cut short at the age of thirty-one. Yet who can doubt that in a few months Perry bought with his life the fullest achievement of a life-time—a glorious part in the salvation of Liberty and Justice and Decency, indeed of Civilization itself! THE first session of the production engineering group on Wednesday, morning, with J. B. Umpleby as chairman, recorded the principal developments since the Fort Worth meeting. Added to this was a lively discussion of pressure maintenance. Recent advances in the air-gas lift have resulted from the need of applying the method to smaller wells at lower costs. In many places intermittent flow has given excellent results, and numerous mechanical de-vices for its automatic control have been, developed. Papers by C. V. Millikan on the Mid-Continent field and by A. H. Bell on California, fields formed the basis for discussion. The maintenance of initial sand pressures was ably discussed for two Texas fields by t. V. Foran in a paper that not only outlined the technic of operation and the results obtained but also contained noteworthy cost data in terms of increased ultimate production. Mr. Foran recommends the use of air in the first stages of pressure maintenance as a means of determining sand conditions and directions of flow, later turning to gas, if available, because of its greater solubility on oil. A round table discussion on petroleum engineering educational problems, with H. G. George as chairman, brought out much interesting discussion that is difficult to summarize. The other Wednesday morning session was a refinery engineering symposium with T. G. Del-bridge as chairman and the economical application of heat for the general topic. A paper on the modern pipe -still, by H. S. Bell, and another by C. W. Stratford on the modernization of the cylindrical still elicited a lively discussion.
