Current theories of fracture maintain that brittle materials contain flaws or regions of weakness at which fracture originates. Whether a particular flaw grows depends upon the stress distribution in its vicinity and upon the presence of other stress relieving mechanisms capable of absorbing the applied energy. The writers are to be congratulated for their excellent paper on a subject dear to the hearts of manufacturers of cold rolled sheets. Gary Works produces rimmed steel ingots up to 53,000 pounds teemed 91 inches high in 31 x 84 inch molds. By the writers' definition, this puts us in the small mold category, and a comparison of their adopted melt shop practice with our established rimmed steel practice discloses not a dime's worth of difference between us. This should give comfort to the writers for we at Gary have- never encountered the frequency of white line rejections as described in their paper.

There are approximately 3000 bibliographic entries coded into the BIRS system. The bibliographic retrieval system was designed to be run by the general data management System 2000. The information system with entries of coal research, land reclamation and other energy and environmental studies is up and on line. As more entries are coded they are loaded into the system.

Reynolds Jamaica Mines, Ltd., has received a $3+ million loan from ECA for the development of what are termed the largest bauxite deposits in the world in Jamaica, B.W.I. This amount is in addition to $11 million already provided. The new agreement calls for delivery of 750,000 tons a year beginning in early 1952. Inco has announced a new alloy containing 35 pet Ni which can be used for many purposes served by the old alloys which ran up to 70 pet Ni. The new alloy "Incoloy" is 35 pet Ni, 20 pet Cr, and the balance iron.

J. S. UNDER, Pittsburgh, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*).¬In discussing Mr. Wysor's paper, I said that we were investigating the deposits around furnaces working on certain ferro alloys. Since the meeting, we have made a number of investigations, and have found that the deposits in the second and third passes of the hot-blast stoves, and near the stack at the boilers of furnaces working on spiegel and ferromanganese, contain about 15 per cent. total potash, of which 10 per cent. is water-soluble. The potash occurs mostly as potassium sulphate, a very small amount being present as potassium carbonate.

The rate of acid leaching of malachite from a sandstone ore was shown to be controlled by the diffusion of H+ ions through the host rock. The kinetics of the reaction can be expressed by a shrinking core model. Equations for calculating effective diffusivities from an "infinite" slab and a cylindrical core were derived. The effective diffusivity, of H+ ions in a sandstone ore was measured.
