Today, the future of the coal industry is extremely bright because coal can be produced at a cost which makes it competitive with other energy sources. However, the industry has been forewarned that further cost reductions must be made if it expects to remain a serious contender in the growing energy market. Surface as well as underground operations must be improved. The very same elements which affected production a few years ago still exist today and will continue to be present in the future. Improvements in production mining equipment, mining methods and auxiliary equipment have resulted in reduced costs over the past few years. Efforts must be continued toward further reducing costs in areas which have been previously improved and new areas should be investigated for possible improvements. Therefore, new techniques must be developed which will enable the industry to augment its current efforts in reducing the cost of mining. The logical place to begin evaluating the factors affecting production and cost is in the immediate face area where a substantial part of the total cost of mining is incurred. The coal industry stands to gain much through the development of new techniques for analyzing the numerous variables affecting production and by establishing methods for eliminating or minimizing the adverse effect of those variables which can be controlled. Intuition and trial-and-error methods have been the standard means used to resolve many of the factors which influence production. As a result, many elements are overlooked or ignored because their effects on production are not pronounced and cannot be readily resolved.

The number of completions in 1944 in Ohio was only slightly greater than completions in the preceding year, but the initial daily volumes both of oil wells and gas wells declined considerably. The dry-hole ratio was a little lower than in 1943, even though in the year under review considerable effort was made to find new production. No new areas of consequence were discovered. Thirteen new gas pools, the largest of which was 1000 acres and the average 565 acres, were opened during the year. Eleven of these pools were in the Clinton sand, one was in the Oriskany, and one was in the Berea. Approximately 15 small pools might also be rated as discoveries, but because only one or two wells have thus far been completed in each, they cannot at present be properly evaluated. The latter pools average about 120 acres each. Some extensions were made to existing gas pools. The number of oil wells drilled was only one less than in 1943, yet compared with the year 1941, when twice as many oil wells were drilled, the difference is startling. Effective Aug. I, 1944, a blanket subsidy was granted of 35¢ per barrel on all Cleveland-Chatham, Coming, and Lima grades of oil, and 75¢ per barrel on Pennsylvania grade crude. The subsidy was authorized by the Office of Price Administration, with reimbursement to purchasers of the various grades made through the Defense Supplies Corporation, a branch of Reconstruction Finance Corporation. For several years the small operator, particularly the owner of stripper wells, was in a serious position. The subsidy has been a means of real help and, in addition to aiding the operator, it has prolonged the life of many small wells that otherwise would have been abandoned, with consequent loss of daily production and unre-covered reserves. In preparing a well for pumping, observations are often made of the fluid level in the well bore or bottom-hole pressures at various times before equilibrium has set in. From a qualitative point of view one may immediately infer that if the rise in the bottom-hole pressure or fluid level is rapid the permeability of the sand about the well bore is large, and converse conclusions may be drawn if the rise is slow. However, a more quantitative estimate will give additional information of value, as will be shown in this paper. To derive such an estimate we may proceed as follows. Let h be the fluid height, above the sand face, at time t, and let yo be the average density of the fluid that enters the bore. The bottom-hole pressure, for a fluid height h will therefore be p = rogh, neglecting, of course, the friction drop in the well bore, while the fluid is rising, as may be justifiably done for most pumping wells. If a is the free area of the open-flow string—assumed to be uniform— the rate of production from the sand during the rise of fluid will be: where the last part of the equation merely indicates that, in general, the production rate Q must be considered as a function of the back pressure, and is determined by it alone. In fact, equation 1 shows that if the rate of rise of the pressure or fluid level is determined as a function of the height of rise, or p, for a number of values of the latter, this functional relation between Q and p will be immediately given. Conversely, if we know this functional relation, the rate of increase of p or h may be predicted, or, by observing the rate of rise of p or h some of the constants of the sand may be determined. THE gypsum industry of Canada, like all others connected with the construction business, has felt the full effect of the depression during the past few years, and sales of its products have been greatly curtailed. The year 1934, however, saw a decided turn for the better and a gradual but steady improvement is noticeable in all its branches. In many ways the depression has been a blessing in disguise to the gypsum industry; during the years from 1926 to 1930, demand increased so rapidly that companies were forced to expand and often new apparatus and machinery were placed in operation regardless of expense, or plants already existing were taxed to their limit and forced to keep running with the minimum amount of repairs. The depression, therefore, has really given the industry what might be called a breathing spell, in which it has had time to take stock of its position, to reduce its costs of production, to devote more serious attention to the quality of its products, and to con-solidate its operations into a smooth working whole, which as conditions improve will enable it to meet the demands of the trade with more varied products of a quality hitherto unattained. Progress in the gypsum industry, however, has not been confined to the years of the depression, for some of the greatest advances occurred under the spur of increased demand for its products by the building trade. The purpose of this paper is to review briefly some of the out-standing trends in the development of the gypsum industry in Canada during the past 10 or 12 years.

DEVELOPMENTS in engineering during the past decade, particularly as applied to marine construction, mining machinery and other purposes in which corrosion offers a serious problem, have created a large demand for a non-ferrous metal highly resistant to corrosion and at the same time useful in general construction work as a substitute for steel without materially decreasing the factor of safety or increasing the weight of the various parts over that ordinarily used in the case of mild steel. To obtain the combination of desired properties many compositions have been proposed and used with excellent success, but at the present time probably the most popular and most widely used combination is the non-ferrous alloy commonly called manganese bronze. This is nothing more than a high brass to which have been added, by the proper method of alloying, comparatively small percentages of aluminum, iron, or manganese with the definite purpose in view of strengthening the alloy and rendering it more dense and close-grained than the average yellow-brass casting. In the manufacture of manganese bronze a great deal has been said about the importance of using only the highest grades of raw material and the beneficial or detrimental effects, as the case may be, of various impurities, as well as the importance of adding the ingredients according to various formulas proposed; but in most of these cases the literature on the subject has dealt principally with the manufacture of this alloy from virgin metals And raw materials of the highest purity. It is the purpose of this paper to deal particularly with the possibilities that lie in the proper development of methods for manufacturing such an alloy by more economical methods than those which have usually been discussed in other literature on the subject. The process of cooling air by allowing it to expand and do work in an engine is well known, but the theory of obtaining cold air by free expansion without the aid of an engine operating with cutoff has been little discussed. This note will give the cost of driving an adit at the Melones mine, in 1898, and, for purposes of comparison, the cost of similar work, in 1888, at the Hogsback mine, Placer county, Cal. The property of the Melones Consolidated Mining Company is situated on the Mother Lode of California, on Carson Hill, near Robinson's Ferry, and adjoins on the south the famous Morgan mine. The Mother Lode of California extends for a distance of over 100 miles in length through several counties, with a general strike of northwest and southeast. Three veins (commonly called the east vein, middle vein and west vein) comprise the " lode " in this section. The Melones property is situated upon the east and middle vein, and includes 1407 feet on the east vein and 5166 feet upon the middle vein. A shaft had been sunk on the Reserve mine, which is on the east rein, and within 230 feet of the Morgan mine. At the bottom of this shaft drifts and cross-cuts had been run and a large body of ore developed. It was deemed advisable by the Melones Mining Co., which holds this property under bond from the Melones Consolidated Mining Co., to run a tunnel and develop this body of ore at a greater depth. An option was obtained upon the South Carolina mine, which adjoins the property on the south, and is on the same east vein, upon which a tunnel had been run a distance of 1080 feet. This tunnel was cleaned out and continued to a point within forty feet of the Morgan mine. It passes directly under the Reserve shaft, 425 feet below the 200-foot level. As HEAT is the controlling factor in all smelting operations, it will be .most helpful to make a new set of calculations on the basis of a .unit of fuel burned at the tuyeres to carbon monoxide. This ties together the only two factors in this operation that seem to be constant with respect to each other-the fuel at the tuyere and the air or its oxygen content. If our usual smelting operations, using natural air heated to reasonably obtainable temperatures, furnish sufficient heat above this critical temperature for the purpose, it is doubtful whether additions of oxygen will be of marked benefit. A unit of fuel will not produce a single heat unit more if burned with pure oxygen than if burned with natural air and less heat will be available per unit of fuel by the amount of heat that is carried in by the preheated nitrogen in the natural air of the blast. This is more readily apparent if considered in connection with a heat balance sheet per unit of fuel at the tuyere. The heat available in the stack, as shown by the committee's report, is less by reason of the lower fuel consumption per unit of output assumed in this calculation. The balance sheet for enriched air shows a shortage of the amount of heat usually carried in with the blast; also a lack in the hearth of sufficient heat to melt the 18 per cent. additional metal and slag and in the shaft to the extent of the shaft heat required to heat the 18 per cent. additional stock to the melting point. These heat deficiencies are provided for by the largely increased conversion of carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide, which is assumed, as shown by the following figures: Calculation for natural air: Carbon dioxide 18.4 per cent. (after having eliminated the carbon dioxide from limestone) and 20.8 per cent. of carbon monoxide. Calculation for oxygen-enriched air: Carbon dioxide 28.4 per -cent. and carbon monoxide 23.2 per cent. (no carbon dioxide from stone as lime is charged instead).

IN the last 15 years industrial use of ground water has more than doubled, and in 1951 amounted to 5 billion gallons per day. A similar sharp increase in the utilization of ground water for irrigation and public-water supply occurred in the same period. In many areas rapid increase in withdrawal from wells has taken place almost entirely unhampered by regulatory control and with little or no integration of effort. As might be expected, the chief interest in many regions has been maximum production rather than sustained perennial yield. As a result, widespread depletion of underground reservoirs and deterioration of the quality of the water stored in them has taken place in many areas, even though total pumpage in the United States is far below ultimate potential. Of even more concern is the fact that excessive withdrawal has drawn salt water into the reservoirs beneath many heavily populated centers along the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts, causing costly abandonment of pumping plants.' Many hydrologists expect that consumption of water will rise rapidly in the near future, and some predict that industrial requirements will more than double in the next decade.2,3 Thus it appears likely that the draft on many already heavily pumped underground reservoirs will be greatly increased and the search for additional sources of usable ground water intensified in years to come. In view of this, industry as a whole will be forced more and more to recognize the potentialities and limitations of ground-water reservoirs and to utilize them more effectively to prevent costly water shortages and disruption of production. Through painful experience, some industries are already well aware of the need for effective water utilization, and have managed individually or through joint effort to check trends threatening to deplete underground reservoirs completely or to impair the quality of the water. Various remedial measures have been used to bring about successful management of local or regional ground-water resources. Of these, replen-ishment of aquifers by recharge wells or basins has played an important role in overcoming some ground water problems. Artificial recharge of underground reservoirs by water spreading has been practiced successfully in the United States for many years. In the West it has become an important method of salvaging flood run-off for irrigation of crops and maintenance of public water-supply reserves, and it is used to some extent in parts of the East. Artificial recharge by means of wells, on the other hand, is a relatively new development. Until recently it was employed in only a few areas, principally along the East coast. For the last few years, in the ever increasing search for additional water supplies, industry has had greater recourse to this method. Utilization of recharge wells to control the temperature and quality of underground water supplies is also being considered seriously. Operation of recharge wells, like water spreading, is governed largely by local conditions. It requires water relatively low in turbidity, whereas in some areas water spreading has been used successfully with water of high turbidity and silt content. However, water spreading must be employed in large areas and can be carried on effectively only where aquifers crop out at the surface. Recharge wells can be used in limited space. Recharge wells are similar to production wells except that the water flows in the opposite direction. Thus any water-bearing bed that will yield water to wells may be recharged by wells. Often, however, the water available for recharge is of a different character and temperature from that existing in the ground-water reservoir and if transmitted directly underground from a recharge well to a production well might require expensive or difficult treatment before it could be used. Fortunately the physical characteristics of reservoir beds, which control the movement and behavior of ground water, are generally not homogeneous. Moreover, the movement of ground water is very slow because of the frictional resistance of the reservoir beds. By taking full advantage of hydrologic and geologic conditions, it is therefore possible in many instances to bring about favorable changes of temperature and dilution as the water moves from the recharge wells underground to the production wells. Furthermore, if the natural quality or temperature of ground water is unfavorable for industrial purposes, recharge wells may be used to introduce water of more favorable quality or temperature into the ground-water reservoir. When water is discharged into a recharge well, the head in the well is increased. Because of this, a cone of elevation is produced on the water table or the artesian pressure surface in the area surrounding the well. The cone of elevation is similar to the cone of depression produced around a pumping well except that the apex of the cone is above the water table or artesian pressure surface. Thus if a recharge well and a production well tapping the same water-bearing bed are close together, as would be the case at many industrial plants, some of the water discharged from the recharge well would be drawn into the production well within a short time. Under such conditions it is apparent that water of unfavorable temperature and chemical characteristics should not be used for recharging. The more important ground-water reservoirs in the United States often consist of alternating layers of impermeable beds and porous material that will yield water readily to wells. Physical characteristics of individual beds in a ground-water reservoir may not persist over great distances, the impermeable layers grading into beds that will yield large quantities of water. The Students' Organization of the Michigan College of Mines was recognized as an Affiliated Student Society by the Board of Directors of the Institute, at a meeting held on April 28, 1916. At the College of Mines, University of Washington, 30 students and instructors took part in the annual spring excursion early in April. Studies were made of the new reverberatory and casting furnaces at the Tacoma smelter, the Du Pont powder works located on Puget Sound and the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company's mine and mills on Howe Sound, near Vancouver, B.C. The Britannia mills are using Hancock jigs, Burchart tables and Minerals Separation flotation cells to effect a high recovery on low-grade chalcopyrite ore. The Mining Club, University of. COAL is perennially -a subject of major interest at. Pittsburgh, but during the week of Nov. 19 to 24 it was especially to the fore because nearly two thousand persons gathered to take part in the second of the international conferences organized by President Baker of the Carnegie Institute. From the opening session on Monday morning when those attending were welcomed by President Baker and T. P. Gaylord, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Pittsburgh, until the party returned from the Clairton coke ovens on Saturday. afternoon, there was something going on all the time, and usually three sessions were in progress at once.

At the SME Fall Meeting held in Phoenix, Ariz. last October, Ernest P. Hall, addressing an Air and Water Pollution session, noted that water pollution caused by acid drainage from bituminous coal measures had begun long before recorded history. "Until recently," he said, "man did not begin to understand the physical phenomena which took place to cause [it] and even today he does not know what can be done to prevent it." CAUSES "It is known from the reports of early explorers that drainage from bituminous coal measures was causing water pollution before coal mines were opened on this continent. They noted the nature of the polluted water in the runs and creeks and predicted the presence of substantial deposits of coal based on the appearance and character of the water. Even today, polluted water drains from virgin coal areas which have not been touched by mining machines," Mr. Hall said.

INTRODUCTION Scope of Work Tins paper represents the results of an investigation of the presence, amounts, and degree of concentration of heavy minerals found in the pulp of the phosphate flotation plant at Peace Valley, Fla., which is operated by the International Minerals and Chemical Corporation of Chicago. In this paper, heavy minerals are those, excepting collophane, that sink in acetylene tetrabromide with a specific gravity of 2.95. Percentages of heavy minerals at several points of the flowsheet and the species of minerals have been determined. Some information as to the screen size of the minerals has been acquired. Previous Work All previous published reports or investigations of the deposits of heavy minerals in Florida have been limited to present beach sands. The mining operations conducted by the Humphreys Gold Corp. about seven miles east of Jacksonville along an ancient shore line have been described in trade journals, but descriptions of the minerals have been lacking. Commercial grades of ilmenite, zircon, and rutile are produced on a large scale. Papers have been published on heavy minerals found on the Florida beaches.I-6 Location "International's" Peace Valley flotation plant is in south-central Polk County, Fla. about eight miles south of Bartow and along the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. The mine surrounds the plant and includes about 1500 acres of the phosphatic lands in this area. GEOLOGY General Setting All of the rock underlying the area is almost horizontal. The oldest bed exposed is part of the Hawthorn phosphatic limestone of Miocene age. This outcrops in the stream bed of the Peace River about one mile east of the plant. Elsewhere the Hawthorn is covered except where it has been exposed by mining operations. The Bone Valley formation of Pliocene age, which is the phosphatic stratum extensively mined in this area, unconformably overlies the Hawthorn. Resting unconformably upon the Bone Valley formation are Pleistocene (?) terrace deposits of unconsolidated quartz sand which comprise the overburden of the phosphate ore. Stratigraphy Hawthorn formation: "Bedrock" of the pebble phosphate deposits is a cream to white colored, sandy, dense limestone containing varying amounts of small grains and nodules of collophane. As in the case of steel and the non-ferrous alloys in general, the use of the microscope in connection with the manufacture of malleable cast iron has proved of inestimable value to the industry. Had its use not been invoked, many facts either would not be known at all or, if suspected, would be confined to the realms of conjecture. No fairer statement could be made than that the start of real progress in the industry was coincident with the application of metallography to the product, though the full significance of this statement can hardly be appreciated except by those who not only are conversant with conditions as they existed at the time referred to, but are familiar with the character of works' practice at the present time.. A few years ago, about the only test made to ascertain the physical properties of the product, except in the case of certain plants, was the bending of a casting to destruction, not only with the object of discovering whether or not the metal was ductile, but for the purpose of inspecting the fracture. The characteristics of the fracture, if correctly interpreted, were known to be of value in locating the trouble in castings that were inferior. In general, it was found that if a casting of medium or heavy section would bend through a wide angle before failure took place, the fracture in the majority of cases would have a black velvety appearance; while if it was held at different angles to the direction of the rays of light, it would show a change of color and an iridescent sheen. But an inferior air-furnace heat or anneal might yield castings which, if thin and consequently largely decarburized, could be bent double on themselves and still not possess the fracture described. If, on the other hand, a casting broke short, its fracture might have one of a great many different color and structural peculiarities. Depending on the cause of the trouble, such castings might have any of the fracture characteristics, of which the following is but a partial list.

Though production began in Canada only a short time after the discovery of oil in the United States, it has never attained large proportions, and if we were to judge entirely by the past the reserves of Canada would be put at a very low figure. There are only two areas from which oil is marketed at the present time; one, the old district around Petrolia in southern Ontario, and the other is the small Sheep Creek field near Calgary in Alberta. The former district has produced between 200,000 and 800,000 bbl. annually for the past 40 years, recent figures being near the minimum amount. Sheep Creek has produced about 12,000 bbl. annually for the past five years. The known reserves in proved territory in each of these fields are exceedingly small, when considered in terms of world reserves. The chief hope of Canada for reserves of considerable magnitude lies in the western provinces. Sedimentary rocks similar to those in the productive fields of the United States occupy thousands of square miles in the western provinces, so that it seems likely that somewhere within this great area the peculiar conditions necessary for the presence of oil pools will be found. Prospecting is being carried on energetically by several large companies, as well as by many independents. The Dominion Government, which controls most of the public lands, is pursuing a fairly liberal policy toward the prospector, which should stimulate wild-catting, although the province of British Columbia, which controls public lands within t.hat province, is at present unwilling to give adequate encouragement to make wildcatting attractive. As there is really no assurance that any productive pools will be found in western Canada, the estimates of reserves are subject to a wide possibility of error. In making estimates, the various areas within which geologic conditions are more or less uniform are discussed separately; the estimates given for each area are not given with the idea that there is a reasonable probability of their eventually proving to be correct. It is hoped that an average of these estimates, taken together with those made for other undeveloped countries, will give a correct total of reserves

T is unfortunate that the word "economics" has -¦¦ come to mean, in the minds of many people, a sort of half-baked mixture of New Deal philosophy and bookkeeping. It may mean anything from mine cost keeping to the theory of gold as a monetary standard. As applied to the industrial mineral industries as a whole it means to us an integrated study of all of the technical, geographical, market, financial, and other factors which determine whether or not a given enterprise has a sound chance of making a business success. Of course it is impossible to generalize too freely in this large group of industries which go to make up the nonmetallic minerals. This group includes such dissimilar products as crushed stone and ca- pacitor mica, phosphate rock and spinning fiber asbestos, roofing granules and potash salts, borate minerals and monumental granite. Yet in many respects their economic problems are similar and, at the same time, far different from those of the metals and of petroleum and coal. These basic differences are almost never recognized by people outside the industries and are rarely appreciated even by metal mining engineers. But in many instances these economic factors are fully as important as, if not more important than, technologic problems. It has been a long fight to get an intelligent and wide-spread appreciation of sound technology in the nonmetallic mineral industries. The importance of the economic side of the problem has yet to be widely understood and appreciated. The problem was outlined in considerable detail by one of the authors some 18 years ago in a long series of articles* and he has since prepared numerous talks

This meeting marks the point at which the long-standing dissatisfaction with the mineral-land laves, the innumerable protests against them, and the many isolated efforts to obtain relief, have developed into a general movement for the: revision. That part of the mining industry which is affected by these laws has three general organizations to speak for it: the American Institute of Mining Engineers, Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and the American "A Mining Congress: all of which are represented in this meeting. In the series of able and thoughtful presented here, prominent men have discussed the evils of the present laws aid some of the reforms which should be made in them. We all appreciate fully the ultimate value of these studies; but we are also painfully aware of the fact that discussion of this kind has been going on for a quarter of a century without any other effect than a steady increase in the mass of printed records stored on library shelves. In order to get any practical result we must induce an indifferent government at Washington to act, and to do this we must unite in pushing some practical plan whereby it may act in a simple and effective way and with the least possible amount of criticism or opposition. The actual question before us is not whether the mining laws are bad; for their evils and absurdities are not only beyond discussion but also beyond the resources of a temperate and dignified vocabulary. It is not what particular changes ought to be made; for it is premature to make specific recommendations until there is some one to listen to them. Moreover, we all know that there are wisdom and experience enough available, and awaiting that time, for the creation of a code which would be a model to the mining world. The practical question now is, how to obtain the revision; and since the American Mining Congress has of late restricted its attention to this phase of the problem I wish as one of its representatives here to present its views upon the matter.
