(communication to the Secretary*):—In operatioils requiring the expenditure of fuel, it is solely a question of supplying a certain number of heat-units at certain temperature-conditions. The difficulty of controlling these temperature-conditions is mainly responsible for low efficiency, unless utilizable waste heat is carefully applied either for the pre-heating of the air necessary for combustion, or for the heating of the raw materials, or in other departments of the works to generate steam, etc. A high theoretical or thermal efficiency very often does not establish a high " commercial" efficieiicy, and this fact is responsible for apparent crude practice in many arts. Coal is still very cheap in the East, and oil sells in the West for less than anywhere else in the world. Despite these favorable conditions, I believe that the list of references given in E. C. Eckel's book,' and also the contributions of C. Naske,2 will show that Mr. Eldred's statement, that a the study of the phenomena of applied combustion has been neglected," is not justified as far as the burning of cement is concerned. I have investigated the heat-balance of a lirne-kiln ailci the commercial advantage of using generator-gas for calcination. Mr. Eldred proposes to calcine the materials in the present type of rotary kiln, gas-fired with long-flame combustion, and to Pdke the fritted calcines to a special, gas-fired clinkering-kiln, which shall embody heat-regenerators. It is proposed that the intergranular corrosion of austenitic stainless steels is associated with the presence of continuous grain houndary paths of either second phase, or solute segregate resulting from solute-vacancy interactions. Experimental observations of structural changes and crrosion behavior of different types of austenitic stainless steel provide support for this poposal. On the basis of this model, it is shown that the intergranular -corrosion susceptibility of austenitic stainless steels in nitric-dic hromate solution may be substantially reduced either by suitable heat treatments or by impurity control. AUSTENITIC stainless steels, such as Type 304, generally have excellent corrosion resistant properties when properly solution heat-treated and used at temperatures where carbide precipitation is slow. However, several corrosion environments have been found which produce intergranular corrosion of solu-tion-treated stainless steels, that is, those steels with no detectable carbide precipitation.''2 Of the various corrosion environments, the most widely used test solution has been the boiling nitric-dichromate solution. In these acid solutions, stainless steels have been found to be susceptible to intergranular attack despite the addition of carbide-forming elements such as titanium or columbium, or despite lowering of the carbon content or use of high-temperature solution treatments. Studies of the electrochemical mechanism of corrosion attack have been made by several worke1s3'4 who found that oxidizing ions such as crt6 depolarize the cathodic reactions and consequently raise the open-circuit potential of stainless steel immersed in nitric acids. As a result of this, the anodic reaction is accelerated. The reason for the localization of anodic activity at the grain boundaries, and resulting intergranular corrosion, has not been conclusively determined. Several workers, e.g., Streicher,3 and Coriou et al.,4 have suggested that the strain energy associated with grain boundaries provides the driving force for the accelerated intergranular corrosion. This argument would predict that alloys of high purity would still be susceptible to intergranular attack. However, work by chaudron5 and by ArmijO,6 has shown that high-purity alloys are immune to attack, in disagreement with this argument. An alternative suggestion is that chemical concentration differences exist between grains and grain boundaries, that is, impurity segregation at boundaries, and that these chemical differences provide the driving force for localized attack. It is this impurity segregation which can lead to accelerated dissolution of grain boundaries when the alloy is exposed to a suitable corrodant. This mechanism would predict the immunity of high-purity alloys to inter-granular attack, which is in agreement with experi-mental observations. In the present paper, some recent studies on inter-granular corrosion of austenitic stainless steels which were conducted by coworkers and myself will be re-tibility A simple model will be described in which it is proposed that the intergranular corrosion of aus-tenitic stainless steel is associated with the presence of continuous grain boundary paths of either second phase or solute-segregated regions.* On the basis of this model, it is suggested that the intergranular corrosion rate can be markedly reduced by the formation of a discontinuous second phase at the grain boundaries if the discontinuous second phase incorporates the major part of the segregating solute, drained from the grain boundary region. Results are presented of corrosion tests and electron microscopic studies of different types of austenitic stainless steel after various heat treatments which provide experimental support for this model. Finally, a solute clustering mechanism, based on a solute-vacancy interaction, is shown to be consistent with the results obtained for inter-granular corrosion of solution-treated austenitic stainless steels. EXPERIMENTAL Corrosion tests using weight loss measurements were made on sheet specimens, which were lightly electropolished, washed, and immersed in boiling (115°C) 5 N HN03 containing 4 g crt+6 per liter added as potassium dichromate. Studies in which the inter-granular penetration depth was measured both by electrical resistance and metallographic methods have shown an empirical correlation between the rate of intergranular penetration and the weight loss per unit time for identically treated specimens of stainless steel." As a result, although all the corrosion data reported here are in terms of simple weight loss measurements, these data are considered to reflect primarily the rate of intergranular dissolution. Fig. 1 shows a typical result of intergranular attack of a solution-treated Type 304 stainless steel after 4 hr in a boiling nitric-dichromate solution. The wide grain boundary grooving at the surface, and the attack at incoherent twin boundaries, are evident; very little corrosion attack is seen at the coherent twin boundaries. The dynamic nucleation of supercooled bismuth and Bi-Sn alloys has been studied over a frequency range of 15 to 20,000 cps. For low-frequency vibration, a minimum vibrational energy was required for enhancement of nucleation. Above this critical energy, the dynamic supercooling was less than static supercooling showing that vibration promoted nucleation. The amount of dynamic supercooling continued to decrease with increasing vibrational energy until a minimum or threshold value was reached. This minimum value of supercooling for nucleation remained constant joy all further increases in vibrational energy. For higher frequencies, similar results were observed. This behavior has been related to the necessity of cavitation for dynamic nucleation. When a liquid is cooled to a temperature below its equilibrium melting point, the solid phase is more thermodynamically stable. However, for solidification to occur, a two-step process, nucleation and subsequent growth of the solid phase, must occur. When a liquid is supercooled, that is cooled below the equilibrium melting point, the controlling process for solidification to begin is the rate of nucleation. Once nucleation has occurred, the solidification process is controlled by the rate of growth. Nucleation can be induced by two factors: either by a catalyst or by the use of mechanical shock. Numerous investigators1-4 have studied the effect of nucleation catalysis but much less systematic study has been made of nucleation by mechanical shock waves. The influence of vibrations on grain size in castings and ingots has been studied by many authors but no clear understanding of the mechanism or accurate prediction of the effect has been presented.5 It would be intuitively expected that the further the departure from equilibrium (i.e., the greater the supercooling), the easier it would be to induce nucleation. This has been quantitatively demonstrated both by walker6 and later by Stuhr,7 that the greater the degree of supercooling the easier it is to nucleate by a shock wave. Stuhr also attempted to obtain the mechanical energy required for nucleation of bismuth as a function of supercooling. He vibrated a crucible containing supercooled metal at low frequencies and various amplitudes and noted the corresponding dynamic supercooling obtained. The amount of supercooling was inversely proportional to the mechanical energy applied. Limitation of his experiment was the problem of the confinement of the liquid in the crucible without splashing and minimizing other unwanted modes of vibration. Tiller et al.8,9 did similar work on tin and Sn-Pb alloys using an electromagnetic stirring device. Their conclusions were that the magnitude of the magnetic field strength did not affect the amount of undercooling at which nucleation was initiated. While conclusive experimental results have been lacking to explain this effect of mechanical vibration on inducing nucleation, a number of theories have been proposed. Two of these theories are discussed below. 1) The Change in Melting:- Point Locally Due to the Change in Pressure (Clapeyron Equation). According to Vonnegut10 the most plausible explanation for the nucleation of a supercooled melt by cavitation is the effect of changing the melting point by a change in pressure. For materials where the volume decreases on solidification, an increase in pressure raises the melting point; for materials which expand on solidification, the melting point is raised for a decrease in pressure, i.e., rarefaction. Using the Clapeyron equation, the melting point of a metal can be calculated as a function of pressure. If it is assumed that the equation can also be used to calculate the temperature of nucleation of a supercooled melt as a function of pressure (i.e., the temperature of heterogeneous nucleation will increase with pressure at the same rate as the melting point), the amount of supercooling required for nucleation will be constant at all pressures as shown in Fig. 1. It is obvious that an isothermal change which results in an increase in melting point results in an equal increase in supercooling. This increase in supercooling may now be sufficient for nucleation. A pressure of 80,000 atm was calculated, using the Clapeyron equation, as the pressure required to increase the temperature of nucleation of nickel by 200°C. According to Lord Rayleigh,11 this very large pressure could be generated for a very brief period of time by the collapse of a cavity. This pressure wave is radiated in all directions from the collapsed cavity. If the temperature of the melt is slightly below its equilibrium melting temperature at atmospheric pressure, stable growth can follow; that is, once nucleation occurs, growth becomes the main driving force of the solidification process. This proposal has been extended to water which expands on freezing by assuming that nucleation occurs during rarefaction following the pressure pulse. This negative pressure pulse should follow immediately after the positive pressure pulse with its magnitude approaching the critical tensile strength of the liquid. The negative pressure developed during this period would raise the melting point of water and thus promote nucleation. Hunt and jackson12 have suggested this for water. Similarly, it could be postulated that bismuth which also expands on freezing could be nucleated during the negative pressure pulse. 2) Nucleation by a High-pressure Phase. An extension of the Clapeyron equation to systems where density decreased on freezing at atmosphere pressure has been proposed by Hickling.13 The phase diagram for water initially shows the well-known decrease in

A phenomenological study of the failure of polycry stalline ductile metals at room temperature was carried out using light and electron microscopy. Tensile fractures as well as sections of partially fractured bars of OFHC copper in particular were examined. The initiation and growth of the central crack in the neck of a tensile specimen occurs by void formation. After the formation of the central crack the f'racture may be completed in either of two ways: by further void formation or by an "allernating slip" mechanism. The first leads to a "cup-cone" failure; the second, to a "double-cup" failure. In the past decade or decade and a half there has been a great deal of emphasis on the solution of the problem of the brittle fracture of metals, particularly those which normally exhibit considerable ductility such as steel. Since the problem of the fracture of metals after large plastic strains has less immediate commercial or defense significance, there has been considerably less effort expended in describing the details of the phenomenology and determining the mechanism of this type of fracture. The present research was undertaken to increase our knowledge in this area. The problem of ductile fracture has not been neglected completely, however. Ludwik1 first found by sectioning a necked but unbroken tensile specimen of aluminum that fracture began with a large internal crack which appeared to have started in the center of the neck. Examination of the fracture indicated that the crack had propagated radially with increasing deformation until a point was reached at which the path of the fracture suddenly left this transverse plane and proceeded at approximately 45 deg to the stress axis until the surface was reached. This gives rise to the commonly observed cup-cone tensile fracture. When MacGregor2 was attempting to demonstrate the linearity of the true stress-true strain curve from necking until fracture, he found that copper was anomalous in that the stress dropped off markedly from the straight line value before fracture occurred. Radiography indicated that in the copper an internal crack was formed long before the final fracture, the stress decreasing during the growth of this crack. One of the most significant advances in the understanding of ductile fracture was the result of work by Parker, Flanigan, and Davis.3 By the use of etch-pit orientations they were able to demonstrate conclusively that the fracture surface at the bottom of the cup, although on a gross scale normal to the tensile axis, did not consist of cleavage facets as had been previously supposed by many investigators. Recently, Forscher4 has shown evidence of porosity near the tensile fracture of hydrogenated zirconium which he attributes to hydride decomposition. The workers at the Titanium Metallurgical Laboratory5 have also shown evidence of porosity in a number of the commonly used metals after heavy deformation. Many metals have relatively low ductility during creep tests at high temperature. The fractures are intercrystalline, resulting from the nucleation and growth of grain boundary voids. The work in this area has been recently reviewed by Davies and Dennison.6 It is possible that some of the observations and conclusions may have a bearing on the present study? especially since at least two studies7,' have been extended down to room temperature and below using magnesium alloys. However, since magnesium does exhibit low-temperature cleavage, these results may not be pertinent to the present one. The use of the electron microscope as an aid to the study of fractures has been extensively exploited by Crussard and coworkers.9 The examination of direct carbon replicas of the fractures of a large number of metals and alloys showed that the bulk of the fracture surface was covered with cup-like indentations of the order of 1 to 2 µ in size. These frequently had a directionality by which Crussard claims to be able to tell the direction of the crack propagation. With this rather disconnected background of information, this investigation was undertaken in the hope of presenting a unified picture of the initiation and propagation of a fracture in a ductile metal. To this end all of the techniques previously used were employed simultaneously so that there might be a good correlation of the data obtained by different techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The metal which was chosen as the starting material for this investigation was OFHC copper. Of the dozen or so materials considered, it best fulfilled the requirements of commercial availability in large sizes, good ductility, relatively high melting point compared with room temperature and

The use of geothermal energy is expanding very rapidly. This type of energy has proven commercially profitable for generation of electricity, for space heating, process heating, auxiliary heating of water in conventional steam power plants and for recovery of chemicals contained in natural hot water and steam. Two types of geothermal energy sources are recognized: 1) hot springs in regions of nearly normal heat flow that tap a deep reservoir through which water moves slowly to a hot springs conduit and then rapidly to the surface; 2) hyperthermal areas in which the water is heated by a relatively concentrated heat source related to volcanicity. If there is a geologic trap that provides a geologic analog to a steam boiler, as at Larderello, Italy, the hyperthermal area will have a convecting system that develops superheated water at relatively shallow depth and may provide natural steam in large quantities. If a hyperthermal area is to be productive for a long time, the underflow into the reservoir should be slow enough to allow the heat source and convective system to heat the underflow to the working temperature, and the production rate must not exceed this rate of underflow. A model based on a typical aquifer suggests that the rate of movement of water through the reservoir be such that a few years are spent in transit between isotherms that are spaced about 2°F apart. The possibility of finding blind geothermal areas is illustrated by discussion of the techniques developed in evaluating the subsurface temperatures in the East Tintic district of Utah where a map of isotherms at water level (2000 to 2000 ft below the surface) shows that a hyperthermal area may exist a short distance southeast of the mining district. Very nearly all of the energy that man currently uses comes ultimately from the sun's radiation. This includes water power, fuels such as wood, peat, coal and petroleum, the wind and all our animal power. In the paper summarizing a conference on solar energyl6 the average amount of solar energy received daily on the earth is taken at about 1 cal per m2 per min or slightly less than 2 pcal per cm2 per sec; this is almost exactly the amount of energy on the average that the earth liberates in regions of normal geothermal gradient due to its own internal heating. In many places, however, the energy released is many times the average and in some of these hyperthermal areas, geothermal steam is used for generation of electricity, and hot springs are used for heating buildings and private dwellings, process heating, auxiliary heating of water in conventional steam power plants, and chemicals may be recoverable from both hot water and steam. The use of hot springs waters for heating houses goes back hundreds of years but until recently was confined to a few dwellings close to the hot springs. In Korea, some houses had hot spring water channeled through conduits in the floor centuries ago and thus the Koreans can be credited with pioneer development of radiant heating. In Iceland at present nearly a third of the population uses natural thermal water for domestic heating." The Reykjavik system pipes hot spring water at about 94°C throughout the city and has devised insulated double pipes that allow the water to be piped for some 25 km with a drop of only 1°C for every 5 km. The actual cost to the Icelandic consumer is only one-third the cost of heating by imported coal and yet the industry is one of the most profitable in Iceland. The most profitable use of geothermal energy has been its conversion into electricity which can be transmitted economically much greater distances than hot water. The largest installation at the present time is that at Larderello, Italy, where the Count of Larderello began to experiment in the production of electricity from geothermal steam 60 years ago — in 1904. He installed his first steam turbine, with a capacity of only 250 kw, in 1912 as the result of a local quarrel with the power company which furnished the current required in the Larderello chemical industry - an industry that then dated back nearly a century. As experience was gained in drilling deep holes to tap geothermal steam and in converting it to electric power, the capacity of the installation of Larderello gradually increased, but was all destroyed by the Germans during their retreat from Italy in the closing

A brief review is given of methods designed to produce metallic iron of high purity, and typical results are listed. A recent method, utilized at the National Bureau of Standards, consists of the extraction of ferric chloride by ether, reduction of this ferric chloride to ferrous chloride, further purification of this chloride, and the subsequent electrolytic deposition of metallic iron. iron produced by this procedure apparently is softer than, and otherwise different in properties from, any iron previously prepared and contains appreciably smaller amounts of impurities. THE history of attempts to produce "pure" iron reaches to antiquity and it may be presumed that each ancient armorer who succeeded in making a better steel concluded, correctly, that he had done a better job of removing the "base metals," and incorrectly, that he now at last had a "pure" metal. Early metallurgical papers mentioned use of "pure iron" in making alloys—this "pure" iron in most cases being inferior to some commercial stocks of the present time. Improvement has been continuous, and usually at a sufficient rate to convince each succeeding group of workers that they, at last, were using the really pure metal (until the analysts also improved their techniques to again discover the impurities). These adventures were reviewed in some detail by Cleaves and Thompson.' Although the ores of a metal may be abundant, difficulties in extracting it may make the pure metal very rare. When impurities are restricted to a total of a few parts per million, nearly all pure metals become rarities. Lead, copper, gold, mercury, silver, zinc, aluminum, bismuth, and the six platinum metals are claimed to be available with total impurities ranging from 2 to 50 ppm. The present small and scattered world supply of so-called "pure" iron holds an unimpressive place in another group of 16 metals having approximately 100 ppm of foreign material. Of about 20 less rare metals, only the platinum metals are more costly to prepare. While the production of such rare varieties of iron may appear insignificant in the presence of thousand-ton operations with 95 to 99 pct metal, it must be emphasized that all researches on commercially interesting irons and steels are in fact studies of the modifications of the properties of iron by additional materials. Until the properties of high purity iron are directly measured, all ferrous research must operate without known base values. Traces of impurities may affect the properties of a metal in many ways. Infinitesimal traces of solutes, by disturbing the electronic configuration, greatly change the electrical properties of transistors and semiconductors2-3 and slightly larger traces might alter these quantities in iron. Soluble impurities which disturb the perfection of lattice arrangement not only may alter the magnetic constants and electric properties, but by their close association with dislocation phenomena probably control the very existence of the "yield point"; determine the value of yield stress; and perhaps control the selection of slip and cleavage planes. It has been speculated that impurities might even cause the allotropic transformation in iron, but in any case their rearrangement must contribute to the unreliability of heat capacity and other thermodynamic measurements. Impurities which do not remain in solution may cause even greater effects on the properties. Microscopically visible amounts of phases other than ferrite can be found in all high purity irons which have come to my attention. It can be calculated that from 50 to as little as 2 ppm of an insoluble material might be sufficient to completely film all grain boundaries in irons having grain sizes from ASTM Nos. 10 to 1. Should this occur, such films, even though invisible, may be very important in fracture problems, especially at extremes of temperature:' Studies of grain growth and diffusion normally imply consideration of a single-phase system, hence, in the presence of insoluble impurities they can be expected to give ambiguous data."
