The sudden decease, April 1, 1910, in Chicago, of Dr. Franklin R. Carpenter was a shock to his many friends. He died in his sixty-second year, of heart paralysis. To most fellow-members of the Institute who have followed the progress of the last twenty-five years in the mining and treatment of non-ferrous ores, the work of Dr. Carpenter in that line is familiar; but very few, even of those who knew hinl well in the later years, are acquainted with his earlier struggles to satisfy an inborn hunger for knowledge. The story of his life resembles that of the pioneer who opens up new country; overcoming hardships with indomitable courage, meeting doubts and difficulties with an alert and open mind, and exercising in the face of reverses an unconquerable perseverance. It seems appropriate to place on record in the Transactions a brief outline of the life and work of this eminent engineer. During the past 15 years of his life Dr. Carpenter was much interested in genealogy. In the pursuit of this study as an avocation, he traced his own ancestry to the time when ((Hugh," called "le Charpentier" on account of the dexterity with which he had swung his battle-axe as a crusader, settled in Sussex on lands received from William the Conqueror. The Carpenters came to this country with William Penn. A prominent member of the family was Joshua Carpenter, the founder of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Dr. Carpenter's branch of the family moved from Pennsylvania into that part of Virginia which is now West Virginia, where his grandfather settled in Harrison county, while the grand-uncle went further west, and built the first iron-furnace at Hanging Rock, Lawrence county, Ohio. Rocks in mines, quarries, and many outcrops commonly show evidence of being under high stress. Saw cuts and drillholes close in, partly mined coal bursts violently, and pillars crush and rock spalls in mines even at moderate depths. Similarly, strong and massive rocks such as granite and sandstone naturally divide themselves into sheets that lie more or less parallel to their outward topographic form. The sheets may be either convex or concave. Thin plates of bare rock surfaces bow up and buckle. Such effects often cannot be explained by the obvious loads now acting on the rock, that is, by loads resulting from overburden, topographic irregularities, or stress concentration around openings. The stresses exceed those that would result from such loads. Two interpretations of such excess stresses have been made. In one, the stresses are assigned in origin to now active tectonic forces. In the other, they are regarded as leftover and locked in from some previous state at which higher pressures prevailed. These two sources may both operate and they generally cannot be distinguished easily in the field. There are other complicating sources of stress such as temperature gradients and chemical alteration. Nevertheless, some bodies of rock, by exfoliating, show evidence of high internal stress even though they are practically unweathered and so isolated topographically that the presence in them of significant stress due to exterior loads or active tectonic forces seems unlikely (Fig. 1). Moreover, completely isolated rocks are known to change density, shape, or size 1,2 to expand under constant compressive stress;3 and even to disintegrate 4,5 without the intervention of weathering processes. The stresses involved here must be truly residual in the sense long used by metallurgists; that is, residual stresses in a body are those that remain.

WHILE Mr. Fahrenwald has been working on the fundamentals of ore-dressing, in Idaho, the Northwest Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Washington, has been studying the corresponding fundamentals for the closely-allied subject of coal-washing. In this work many of the principles outlined in Mr. Fahrenwald's paper have been touched on, one important exception being that phase of his studies where conditions were approximated between those existing on a table and those existing in a hindered-settling classifier. During the past three years this work has been given over almost exclusively to a study of coal-tabling to devise better methods of cleaning fine sizes of coal, particularly the coals of the Northwest, which are very difficult to wash. One important result of this study thus far has been the development of a satisfactory hindered-settling coal classifier, now in use in several commercial plants. Recently table stratifica-tion has been the subject for study. This latter phase of the work with coal,. as well as the earlier portion dealing with hindered-settling classification, has in a measure paralleled Mr. Fahrenwald's work with ore. Without going into details about the results of the coal experiments, I shall merely say that, from a quali-tative standpoint, they are, in general, concordant with Mr. Fahrenwald's, but that from a quantitative stand-point the results, particularly those with, table strati-fication, are somewhat different. These differences may disappear as the work progresses-Mr. Fahrenwald is further ahead with his experiments than we are at the Northwest Station-but if not, the disparity would not be surprising, and indeed would be what one might reasonably expect when investigators work on two very dissimilar materials and use different apparatus and methods of study. However, this- mention of our coal-washing experiments is made only in passing. A principle of general application that may be estab-lished from Mr. Fahrenwald's paper is that different types of stratification should be used in successive' gravity-concentration processes to. obtain best results.

It is recognized that, in all metallurgical operations, the greatest possible uniformity in all conditions is essential to the best results. It is the constant aim of metallurgists to secure this uniformity, and their success in this respect has been in many cases the cause of great advances in the metallurgical processes themselves. Of all such processes, the production of pig-iron in the modern blast-furnace is perhaps the most complex and the most difficult of control. Notwithstanding the great progress of recent years, there is still great difficulty in obtaining anything like uniform conditions and results in the manufacture of pig-iron. The reason is not far to seek. The ores vary in composition and physical properties, often carrying a varying amount of gangue material, unevenly distributed. The coke may vary in composition, cell-structure, moisture, hardness, and other properties. The blast, the weight of which far exceeds that of any other constituent, varies in its moisture-content and consequently in its chemical composition; and its temperature, by reason of the method of heating, is not uniform, but, besides varying from time to time with atmospheric and other outside conditions, has a maximum and minimum for every changing of stoves. Now, with regard to these variations, the modern demand for uniformity has been greatly aided. In order to implement the most efficient and cost-effective hydraulic fracturing stimulation treatment within a particular region, a thorough understanding of the in-situ stress state and rock properties is paramount (Smith et al., 1978; Warpinski et al., 1982). Several studies conducted in order to "characterize" formations have provided invaluable insight into the relationship between lithologic properties, depth, in-situ stress magnitude and hydraulic fracture orientation. These studies have substantiated that at shallow depths, rock properties such as tensile strength and permeability can exert a substantial influence on the geometry of an induced hydraulic fracture. In turn, these "directional properties" can be related to existing geologic conditions during the time of deposition or major diagenetic alteration of the rock body. As the depth of the "payzone" increases, the role of the in-situ stresses and therefore the prevailing tectonic conditions becomes the dominant factor in determining fracture geometry. However, reservoir properties cannot be ignored. The porosity, permeability, pervasive fabric element and directional elastic properties can have a significant influence on the success of those tests conducted to measure the in-situ stresses either directly or through secondary observations... for instance, pore-pressure effects on measurements of in-situ stress. The purpose of this paper is to provide, through the use of appropriate field and laboratory examples, a more thorough understanding of in-situ stresses, rock properties and their integrated effect on hydraulic fracture properties. In addition to highlighting and expanding the wide body of existing literature, the case studies cited are designed to encourage mutual transfer of technology from petroleum-related, rock-mechanics efforts to other disciplines.

The investigation of aluminum alloy systems prior to 1923 was severely handicapped by the low purity of the best aluminum available. However, by that time, the electrolytic purification of aluminum had been developed by the Aluminum Company of America,(1)† and in May, 1923, there was initiated, under the direction of E. H. Dix, Jr.,(2) a program for the investigation of the aluminum-alloy systems using the purest electrolytically refined aluminum. Up to the present time 15 papers (3) have been published, most of which are on the binary aluminum systems. Work is now in progress on the ternary systems, and it seems probable that most of the future work will be on ternary systems. Therefore this survey of the binary aluminum systems investigatcd up to the present time (the sixteenth paper of the series) concludes the first phase of this program. Certain qualitative relations between corresponding portions of the various binary diagrams as well as between different parts of the same diagram were noted some time ago by R. S. Archer.(4) In the present paper these relations and others are considered quantitatively by the application of well-known thermodynamic equations or by newly discovered empirical relations. No attempt will be made here to present the history of the development of the thermodynamic equations defining equilibrium or their application to metallic systems, although a list of references is given at the end of this paper for those who are interested in this phase of the subject. FROM the beginning of its activities, the members of the National Production Committee have felt that the following points were essential to the success of its work: The operators must. feel that their operations were not 100 per cent. efficient; that they should be courteous and fair in their treatment of their employees; and that they should set an example of hard work and patriotic interest in increased production. Every move made must appeal to the sense of fairness of all parties concerned. The men must feel that in working more faithfully, and consequently producing more coal, they are rendering a distinct service to their Government in the time of its great need. As the workers feel that greater efficiency on their part results only in greater profits to the operators, the advantage to the operator should be lost sight of, as far as possible, and the advantage to the Government in fighting the war emphasized. Both operators and workers should know that the Government considered increased production an obligation, and opportunity for service, resting on both parties and not on the operators or the workers alone, and that both parties could very much better the efficiency of the pre-war period. Had the committee intimated that it thought the coal shortage was clue entirely to the idleness and inefficiency of the workers, its campaign would have failed, for the men would have resented the charge because only too frequently their efforts to produce more coal were thwarted by bad management; besides the operators would have lacked stimulus to better effort. On the other hand, had the impression been given that the committee thought that the coal shortage was clue entirely to bad management, the operators would have resented the charge because only too frequently their efforts to produce more coal were thwarted by the idleness and inefficiency of the workers; and the workers, having been thus indirectly pronounced 100 per cent. efficient and patriotic, would have lacked stimulus to better effort.

For more than a decade the use of the metallographic microscope, by mining geologists, for examining ores has been increasing and conclusions founded upon examinations made by it are found in several recent professional papers of the United States Geological Survey as well as in our technical publications. But most mining men have been slow to realize the positive value of this instrument in their daily work. The reason for this condition is not hard to find. The varied applications, the simplicity of preparation, and the methods of studying a polished section of ore have not been widely published. Papers in technical periodicals have been profusely illustrated by photographs of such sections, special refined methods of procedure for laboratory work have been described, and complete and detailed schemes of identifying the ore minerals have been published in book form.1 But simple and easily applied directions and, what, is more important, light, compact, and inexpensive equipment have not been available. The simplest microscope obtainable is intended for laboratory use and is much too bulky for the average field equipment; at present it costs about one hundred dollars for the instrument alone. Methods previously described for polishing specimens have necessitated electrically driven lap wheels, which are found only in permanent installations. It is small wonder that the examining mining engineer, field geologist, resident engineers, and mill men have looked upon the subject as being too involved for the field and have assigned it to the laboratory investigator. The writer has been interested in this question for some time from the viewpoint of his own work. Being handicapped by the difficulties enumerated, he has designed an outfit that has proved very useful. It is described here and its. applications shown in the hope that it may be of equal value to others, and that a start will be made toward popularizing

The object of the present paper is to call attention briefly to a novel method of analyzing the action of the ordinary gravity stamp, which has not only thrown much light upon the exact motion of the stamp-head, but promises also to be of value in determining the efficiency of a new mill before setting it to its work of crushing, and in this respect should be of service to constructors of mining machinery as well as to mining engineers. The method was devised by Mr. D. B. Morison, and developed in connection with his experiments on the comparative crushing-effects of his patent high-speed stamp and the ordinary cam-stamp, which were carried out at the works of Messrs. L. Richardson & Sons, Engineers, Hartlepool, and on which he read a paper at Newcastle in 1897.* Mr. Morison's experiments were of a very exhaustive nature; and having been consulted by him during his investigations, I had frequent opportunities of examining the methods employed and the results obtained. Experiments were first made with an apparatus resembling the indicntor of a steam-engine, inasniuch as the drum revolved alternately backwards and forwards, thus producing a closed diagram. This form was not found satisfactory, and it was therefore altered so as to cause the drum to revolve continuously in one direction, thus giving a continuous or open diagram. The arrangement is shown in plan in Fig. 1; a collar, A, surrounds the stamp-stem loosely and works between the guides B, B, which constrain it to move in a vertical line only. Major trends in exploration geochemistry during the past year included an increased level of geochemical exploration by both government and private industry: greater sophistication in sampling, analytical and interpretive techniques: and increased activity on the part of universities and state geological surveys. The evolution of applied geochemistry in North America from a useful prospecting tool to an invaluable exploration method is largely due to efforts of the mining industry, the USGS and the Geological Survey of Canada. In the U.S., there has been a distinct reluctance on the part of universities to conduct research or to offer courses dealing principally with applied geochemistry. Most university geochemists have not been responsive to industry needs because government sponsorship of geochemical research in universities has been overwhelmingly in favor of theoretical, rather than applied research: and, because of the mistaken notion that exploration geochemistry is not sufficiently academic. A critical shortage of specialists in this field has resulted. Specialists in Exploration Geochemistry Needed Based on the response to a brief questionnaire sent to universities in the U.S. and Canada, there is some evidence suggesting a reversal in this trend. Graduate courses devoted to exploration geochemistry are currently being offered in geology departments at the following universities: University of British Columbia, Colorado School of Mines, University of Idaho, McGill University, University of New Mexico, Pennsylvania State University and the University of Utah. Other departments report that applied geochemistry is included in general geochemistry courses. A survey of recent publications suggests increased research interest in exploration geochemistry by university geologists.

IN preparing this paper the object has been to set forth facts relating to illumination problems, which, judging from the results realized in the iron and steel and other industries somewhat similar to mining, will tend toward furthering safety, production, and contentment of employees, as well as economy of operation in mines. By applying the principles of illumination with the assistance of modern appliances, the full benefits in efficiency may be derived from improvements already made in other details of mine operation. The lighting of a typical coal mine may be divided into four distinct parts: 1, The lighting of the buildings about the top; 2, the lighting of the working faces; 3, general illumination at the bottom; and 4, special applications of lighting. The lighting of buildings about the top may be treated in the same manner as that of any other industrial plant, for we have a boiler room, an engine and generator room, a forge, a machine shop, and a hoist room. These can be well and efficiently lighted by the use of 100-watt tungsten-filament multiple lamps with proper reflectors so spaced and suspended that a power consumption of from ¼ watt per square foot in the boiler room to 1 watt per square foot in the machine shop is obtained. The methods that apply to this kind of lighting have been ably treated by a number of authors,1 and for this reason a detailed discussion is unnecessary.

IT has been said that "the command of nature has been put into the hands of man before he knows how to command himself," and what we see about us gives particular emphasis to this observation. If this condition be granted, the vaunted boast of school and college, of the institution that had the training of this generation, and of its fathers, and of its grandfathers, the boast that education is a "preparation for life," stands exposed as a hollow claim, or as a ghastly, cynical conception of life, or else education has fallen far short of its intentions. It has been evident for some time that education was not meeting the fullest expectations of society. In recent years there has been a deal of speculation indulged in by both laity and faculty in regard to American education and American civilization, and some few and sporadic changes have been effected. Today, however, there is no longer time for mere hypothetical considerations; we are faced with certain definite facts and confronted with obvious conditions that will not wait for fine-spun theories. If educators do not put their house in order, someone else will do it for them. The trends in mineral industries education must be in harmony with this general realignment that is today visible on the educational horizon, and only as these trends are in conformity with this movement can they be called sound. Two questions, then, confront mineral industries educators: (1) What are the trends in mineral industries education, and (2) how do these trends correlate with the major educational movements of the day?

A computer programing system has been devised to assist in open pit mine design planning. This system operates upon data generated for cross sections in the mine plan, and parallels present manual methods used in mine design, resulting in a minimal communications barrier between the mine planner and the computer. Input data for each cross section includes geologic interpretation and mine design parameters such as wall angles, bench heights, berm widths, and ramping system. The program will optimize the design of each cross section to give minimum stripping at any desired ore reserve level. This system is functional in the sense that it is easily adopted, changes in mine design parameters can be quickly evaluated, and each resultant design incorporates all recognized mining constraints.

The use of pH control in solvent extraction circuits to aid in metal separation, concentration, and purification is an extremely useful technique applicable to a wide range of solutions. This paper discusses the technique in general and then gives examples of its use in extraction stages, wash and/or scrub stages, and in stripping stages, to effect the desired metal separation, concentration, and purification. Specific examples cited include Cu-Ni, Cu-Zn, and U-Mo separations using commercially available liquid ion exchange reagents.

Tailings water from primary flotation concentrators usually contains minor amounts of pollutants such as heavy metals, cyanide and solubilized molybdenum, which are solubilized in the flotation process. A review of various techniques to reduce pollutants to acceptable levels is presented. Generally, molybdenite ores are processed by conventional size-reduction techniques, followed by flotation to produce a metallurgical-grade concentrate of 88% to 92% MoS2. Reagents commonly used in the milling process include: vapor oil (collector); pine oil, MIBC (frother); Dowfroth 250 (water-soluble frother); lime (rougher pH control); and sodium cyanide (Fe and Cu depressor). For lead depression, Nokes reagent is stage-added to the regrind mills and cleaners. Flocculant is added to obtain clear overflows in the intermediate thickeners.

Recently, Gilvarry1 has criticized the Gaudin-Meloy2 derivation of the size distribution equation for impact grinding. The criticism states that as the derivation stands it is good for only a long, thin wire being fractured. This paper contains a second derivation in reply to the criticism. Consider a homogeneous solid particle. This particle is broken into fragments by impact. It is assumed that the material resembles galena and that the particles were broken into chunky parallelepipedes which may be treated as cubes. The fragments are now reassembled — as seen in Fig. 1 — and a line is passed through the fractured solid perpendicular to one of its faces. For simplicity, the length of the line segment in the cube is considered to be 1. The library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A. M. to 10 P. M. except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90, 000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape.
