ChillaQoe is situated in latitude 17" S., about 138 miles from the port of Cairns, with which it is now connected by rail. A township has been established on the banks of Chillagoe creek, a perennial stream of irregular volume crossing the field almost at rightrangles, nearly midway between the mining-camps of Calcifer and Mungana, which have been formed at the southeastern and western extremes of the field respectively. This situation was selected because of the water-supply and its proximity to the site most suitable for the erection of reductionworks. By its central position it commands the whole of the mines. The altitude above sea-level is about 1200 ft., whereas that of Calcifer and Mungana is 1400 ft.—a difference sufficient to account for a materially higher temperature at Chillagoe. The surrounding limestone bluffis add by radiation to the heat, and, at the same time, prevent the cool breezes from passing freely through the town; consequently, the temper* ture, which is high throughout the year, and especially so during the summer months, is here ge~ierally very oppressive also. The general trend of the field is southeast and northwest, and its length about 18 miles, with an average width of 5 miles; the approximate area is thus 90 sq. miles. The surrounding mineral-district is, however, much more extensive, and numerous other mines, sprcad over wide areas and producing a variety of minerals, exist in the same or parallel belts of mineralized country, of which Chillagoe proper covers but a very small portion. Immense bluffs of limestone, wollastonite and conglomerate, rising in places to nearly 300 ft., and so~netimes nearly a quarter-mile across, give the field a very picturesque and interesting appearance. Does mine-sampling show the commercial value of a coal, and if so, how should it be done ? This question is often asked, but seldom answered. During the past summer, while engaged in securing coal for the Government coal-testing plant at St. Louis, I had an excellent opportunity to obtain information on t,his subject, and the results seem to furniih an answer to the question propounded above. Sampling for the U. 8. Geological Survey Coal- Testing Plant. In organizing the work of the testing-plant, it was decided that coal, in car-load lots only, would be accepted for testing; also that this coal should be loaded under the immediate supervision of a representative of the plant, so as to be certain that the car-load sample would be representative. As an additional check on the work, two mine-samples were to be collected from each mine visited, and these samples, as well as the sample from the car when it was received at the testing-plant, were to be carefully analyzed at the chemical laboratory established in connection with the plant and operated under the direction of Prof. N W. Lord of the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Mine-Samp1ing.—Mine-samples were collected with great care by me and my assistants, Messrs. J. Shober Burrows, John W. Groves and Frank W. De Wolf. The dominant idea in the regulations adopted for mine-sampling mas, that it should be done in such a manner that the sample would have the same composition as the commercial output of the mine.

Engineering research consists, broadly speaking, in the investigation of the effect of the variations in a number of factors on some property of a product or characteristic of a process. The unambiguous description of the product or process requires that the property or characteristic be expressible in quantitative terms. For the purpose of practical control, it is likewise desirable that the independently variable factors governing the product or process be quantities, although this ideal goal is not always attained. Maximum efficiency—i.e., the attain- ment of the maximum amount of reliable, useful information relating to the influence of, the factors on the property of the product or characteristic of the process, for the least expense—is an important requirement for the satisfactory operation of a research organization. Obviously, a necessary condition for the attainment of maximum efficiency is an adequate knowledge of the specialized field in which the experimental research lies. While necessary, this condition is not sufficient. Proper attention must also be given to the general principles of experimental design together with the modern methods for the analysis and evaluation of experimental data. The Present discussion is confined to a single design, the so-called "factorial" design. In the hope that a brief description of the conditions that are favorable or unfavorable to success in the practical treatment of titaniferous ores in the blast-furnace may not be without interest to the members of the Institute, the present paper is submitted. The class of ores of which I speak may be described as magnetites, with a gangue of siliceous matter, in which a portion of the silica is replaced by titanic acid. Professor Dana, in his System of Mineralogy, gives a long list of representative analyses of titanic iron ore in which the percentage of titanic acid varies from 59 down to 34. If the percentage is below the latter figure, the ore is no longer recognized as a "titanic ore;" although, according to my experience, titanic acid is present, in small quantities, in almost all ores. In the methods followed in ordinary analysis it is usually included with the "insoluble matter," unless special search is made for it. In the ores usually regarded as "titanic "the proportion of titanic acid frequently assumes quasi definite percentages, such as from 4 to 5, 8 to 9,12 to 13, and so on, in an ascending scale to those higher percentages that do not at present concern us. The proportions quoted characterize large masses of ore that are now accessible to market and are lying idle only on account of the titanic stigma. My experience with titanic acid in the furnace began in England, fourteen years ago, with my being employed as chemist by the manager of the Norwegian Titanic Iron Company, which was at that time smelting, without mixture, ilmenite from Norway in a furnace 16' X 50'. The process, regarded as a process, was a perfect success; but the enormous quantity of fuel required, the small quantity of iron in the ore, and the cost and uncertainty of importation militated seriously against its commercial success, and a few years saw the attempt abandoned. The following notes are contributed, not with the idea of offering a complete history of the development of this very important process as applied to the Leadville district, but with the hope that the practice, as it was carried out in the Bi-Metallic Smelter, may still be of interest to others. The Bi-Metallic Smelter, at Leadville, Colo., was the first to make a commercial success of the process described in the following pages, which consisted essentially of smelting raw silver- and copper-bearing sulphide ores in blast-furnaces to form a matte, which was generally re-smelted with siliceous ores for a second high-grade matte. Robert Sticht, in his excellent monograph on the subject,' has outlined briefly the plant belonging to this company. He says, in effect: The Boulder, Mont., enterprise set the example for others with whom the patentee (W. L. Austin) had been negotiating, and the old La Plata lead-smelter at Leadville, Colo., was fashioned into a crude, temporary experimental plant for the Bi-Metallic Company, and the feasibility of the process demonstrated by a trial run. Subsequently, the plant was considerably improved, and, being supplied with very favorable ores, continued to run without interruption from August, 1892, to June, 1893. In September, 1803, smelting was resumed in a completely remodeled establishment, some $200,000 having been expended upon the new work. Thus, aside from the Montana experiments, which, under the direction of W. L. Bruckner's revolving cylinders for roasting ores, etc., are now used at a number of the mills in Colorado and New Mexico, for the purpose of roasting and chloridizing silver ores, with highly satisfactory results, even from those cylinders of small size, erected before the many improvements of recent date. AS examples of the larger improved cylinders, reference can be made to those erected at the Tennessee Reduction Works, Silver City, Grant County, New Mexico, and those which were built, in 1871, at the celebrated Caribou Silver Mill and Mines, Colorado, a mining enterprise which has proved so satisfactory as to have been lately sold to a Holland company for an enormous amount. These cylinders, as now constructed by Messrs. Lane & Bodley, of Cincinnati,,Ohio, are shown in Plate 111, in which Fig. I is an elevation in perspective, Fig. 2 a longitudinal, and Fig. 3 a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a sketch of a mill, with Bruckner's cylinder. The exterior of the cylinder is a shell of boiler iron, 12 feet long by 5 feet 6 inches in diameter. The ends are partially closed with similar material, leaving in the centre a circular opening about 2 feet in diameter, bounded by a flange projecting several inches. Upon one side is placed an opening closed by a hinged door. Upon the outside of the cylinder are bolted three bands, as shown in Fig. 1, in which the section of the first is square, and that of the third semi- . circular; the second, or middle band, is a strong spur gear. Passing through the cylinder are six pipes parallel to one another, in a plane at an angle of 15" to the axis of the cylinder; these pipes also lie in this plane at an angle of from 30" to 35' to the longitudinal .axis of the plane, as shown in Fig. 2, where the internal arrangement of the cylinder is seen, a perforated diaphragm being formed through part of the cylinder by means of perforated plates placed between

Earth-resistivity measurements are often of service in obtaining information regarding geological formations, particularly when applied to structural problems. In such problems the masses of the various bodies are large, and have a corresponding effect on the average resistivity of the soil. Much work has been done using such measurements, but in general the method of interpretation employed is empirical. Since certain simple cases can be investigated mathematically, it appears to be quite sound to endeavor to apply the mathematical solutions to the practical results, in order to deduce from the latter such unknown quantities as depth. This paper deals with such a method of interpretation for the simple case of a single horizontal stratum. In the method described by Wennerl for measuring earth resistivity, four stake electrodes are driven into the earth in a straight line as shown in Fig. 1. A current I amperes is passed between the two outer stakes and the potential difference V volts between the two inner stakes is measured. Then if a is the electrode separation, the specific resistance of the soil, which is assumed to be homogeneous, is given by the formula P = 2?v/1 [1] v or if v/1 is called a resistance R ohms, p = 2?aR [2] If a is in inches, p will be in ohms per inch cube, or ohm-inches, and if a is in centimeters, p will be in ohms per centimeter cube or ohm-centimeters. The Mine.-For some years attention has been drawn to the copper deposits of the Appalachian range of mountains, and especially to those in that portion crossing the corners of Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Certain it is that in many places in this locality available deposits of copper await the miner, and one after another are being opened and worked. The parts of these three States alluded to are but sparsely settled, and communications are insufficient to meet the demand for transportation. Railroads are wanted, as the existing wagon roads are unfitted for heavy hauling; these circumstances increase very much the difficulties in the way of mining enterprises. Notwithstanding this, the success of some of the mines of this section is an established fact, and Ducktown has for some years held a high rank among the copper-producing localities of the United States. Of all these deposits, however, none is more interesting or more deserving of attention than the one now under consideration. The works of the Ore Knob Copper Company have been energetically pushed forward, since the reopening of the mine, in the spring of 1873, by Mr. J. E. Clayton, the superintendent and one of the chief owners of the property, and if one thing more than another can insure success it is the combination in this gentleman of rare business capabilities with the deepest personal interest in the pros¬perity of the undertaking. The copper vein -at Ore Knob* is a clearly defined fissure traversing the gneissic rocks of Pre-silurian age in a direction 61° east of north. * The reader is referred to a paper by Dr. T. THE electrical specific resistance of rocks in the field is measured by sending a current through a medium of great volume, compared to the electrodes, whose resistivity should be measured. The whole resistance can be determined by the Wheatstone bridge and the specific resistance calculated by a well-known formula. The resistivity of some rocks in place in Germany and in Switzerland is given; first, of a rock near the surface, and especially near electrodes. Practical applications are made in the determination: (1) of the continuity of a conducting orebody; (2) of the surface area of an orebody; (3) in the detection of a water-bearing fault in a salt mine. Preliminary observations are described: (1) on the influence of the depth of ground-water table; (2) on the detection of gas under high pressure in coal seams. The observations in this paper of the electrical resistivity of rocks and soil in place are along the lines of the very interesting method and results of the Messrs. Gish, Rooney, Hotchkiss and Fisher.1,2 All the work described has been done since 1920.

DIATOMACEOUS earth occurs in deposits widely distributed throughout the nation. The chief producing areas are in the Western States, where many high-grade deposits are known. Eastern deposits of diatomite are unsatisfactory for many purposes either because of impurity or because of the extremely fine particle size. Eastern users of diatomite, on the whole, must pay for transportation of the material from the west coast. The freight rate is necessarily high because of the great bulk of the diatomite. A satisfactory process of purifying the diatomaceous earths of Maryland and Virginia, which are unsuited for wide use only because of impurities, should be of value to eastern users. In the past, benefication of diatomite by wet processes has been limited to classification or sedimentation for the removal of sand from diatoms. Calcination with salt is used to produce a white diatomite when iron is present in the impurities, and small amounts of clay are rendered inactive in the process. No treatment has been developed whereby a large proportion of clay can be removed from a low-grade diatomaceous earth to give a diatomite of very high purity. In August 1937 the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Dr. R. C. Williams, of Baltimore, undertook the problem of purifying low-grade Maryland diatomite by Froth flotation. Work was done at the Eastern Experiment Station, College Park. Unless otherwise stated, the crude diatomite used was from the Patuxent River deposits near Dunkirk. This material, consisting of roughly one-third each or clay, quartz sand and diatoms, was representative of the usual low-grade marine diatomite found in the Coastal Plain Miocene beds of Maryland and Virginia and sporadically in other Atlantic coast states. As received, it contained 50 to 60 per cent moisture and probably had been wet since its formation.

The principal events in the oil history of south Arkansas, north Louisiana and Mississippi in 1930 have been: In Arkansas, very little activity, except for discovery of deep oil production at Urbana, and completion of the first oil well in Miller County. In Louisiana, continued development of the Zwolle area, bringing production up to about 10,000 bbl. per day; practically complete development of the Carterville oil-producing area; discovery and drilling of the rather disappointing Holly area, and discovery of Trinity gas production at Sugar Creek, Claiborne Parish and Rodessa, Caddo Parish. In Mississippi, discovery of the Jackson gas field, in Hinds and Rankin counties. Proration of oil runs was not put in effect in these areas during 1930, because the natural decline of the older fields brought production below the demands of local markets. The only effect of the oversupply and low price of oil was the curtailment of some drilling which might otherwise have been done. Drilling in Arkansas reached the lowest stage since the discovery of oil, with less than 100 completions. Louisiana showed some increase in drilling over 1928 and 1929, but almost half of the wells were drilled primarily for gas rather than oil. As no review on north Louisiana production has been prepared since 1927, and there was none on south Arkansas for 1928, the developments of the three years, 1928, 1929 and 1930 are here briefly discussed.

Oil production in north Louisiana in 1938 was 28,442,910 bbl., a decrease of 225,160 bbl., or less than 1 per cent, from 1937. The principal increases were at Cotton Valley, Lisbon and Zwolle. The greatest decrease was at Rodessa, with small normal declines in production of the old settled fields. Natural gas production from gas wells declined 15.9 per cent from 1937, but casinghead gas increased, so the decline in total production was only 6.9 per cent. Decline in completions was due to lack of proven areas for drilling, as well as price and marketing difficulties; and wildcat activity mas also less than in 1937. The increase in number of dry holes was due chiefly to shallow drilling in the old Caddo and Zwolle fields. Most important events in 1938 were the discovery of the Shreveport deep oil and gas field, extension of the Logansport gas-distillate field into Louisiana, development of oil production in the Bodeaw zone on the flanks of Cotton Valley, opening of deep gas-distillate production at Shongaloo, and completion of one well in a deeper horizon at Bluc Lake (Zwolle field). Geological Notes The deep drilling done in 1938 did not cause any important changes in geological correlation and nomenclature of the formations below the Upper or Gulf Cretaceous. The stratigraphic section of the Lower Cretaceous and deeper beds, with names used in the accompanying tables, as approved a year ago by the Shreveport Geological Society, is as follows:

Lead-zinc ore bodies in the upper part of the Pine Point carbonate barrier complex are localized in paled-solution structures that developed as the result of post-middle Givetian subaerial exposure. Detritus-filled dolines host prismatic ore bodies, and macropores and stratabound permeable zones contain tabular ore bodies. Sulfides are concentrated in these transgressive paleosolution structures that acted as natural bypasses between aquifers and loci for mixing of fluids of different character. Complex ore textures indicate rapid early sulfide precipitation followed by slower sulfide growth. Evidence for both sulfide-carbonate equilibrium and disequilibrium conditions suggest fluctuations in ore fluid composition, perhaps related to periodic supply of reduced sulfur. District and ore body metal distribution pattern may reflect the nature and movement of mineralizing fluids.

Those who deem the subject of this paper an old and superseded one may recall with advantage the words of the great proverb-maker, bidding us to seek the new in the ashes of the old. The manufacture of wrought-iron began with the small hearth built upon an eminence, and relying on the wind for blast. Next came, either the hearth about 12 in. in diameter by 2 ft. in height, blown by a man operating two goat-skins for bellows, or, a hearth of greatly varying diameter and about 10 R. high, depending for its blast upon natural draft. The former appeared in India, the latter in Burmah; and both were in operation until quite recently, though their origin is lost in prehistoric times. The Catalan forge was the evolutionary descendant of the foregoing, and the parent of the Blase-ofen, which in turn led to the high bloomary or " StÜckofen," the father of the blastfurnace, as a producer of cast-iron. The production of cast-iron checked the growth of the direct processes; and led to the introduction of various hearths, such as the Walloon, for low-silicon irons; and the South Wales process, combining the run-out fire with the finery, for higher-silicon irons. Some of these are still in operation in localities possessing the necessary raw materials; and their product is used for purposes requiring wrought-iron of exceptional quality, the supply of which is still smaller than the demand.

The Texas Gulf Coast had a rather disappointing year in the type of oil fields found. Although 17 fields were found in the area during the year, as against 21 fields in 1938, no field of major proportion was discovered. Of these 17 fields, 11 were oil fields, 4 were gas and distillate fields, and 2 were gas fields. The wildcat activity for the year resulted in about 400 dry holes, although probably 10 per cent of these were edge wells close to proved areas. During the year, 1455 oil and gas wells were completed as compared to 1637 wells in 1938, a decrease of 11 per cent. Production for the Texas Gulf Coast area for the year was 100,253,937 bbl. as against 92,530,467 bbl. produced in 1938, an increase of 8 per cent. The daily average production was 274,668 bbl. for the 365 days in the year, although only 252 producing days were allowed by the Railroad Commission; that is, 69 per cent of the time as compared to 71 days shut in for 80 per cent of the time producing in 1938. The total number of oil and distillate wells producing at the end of 1939 was 9495 as against 8451 at the end of 1938—an increase of 1044 wells, or 12 per cent. Of these wells, 6547 were flowing and 2948 pumping, or 69 per cent flowing. At the end of the previous year, 66 per cent of the wells were flowing. New Fields Angleton, Brazoria County.—The Angleton field was discovered by the completion of Glen McCarthy's No. 1 Carr in October for an initial production of 180 bbl. a day of 50" gravity oil through 11/64-in. choke with 3400 Ib. on tubing. The field is 1½ miles east of the town of Anchor. The discovery undoubtedly can be credited to the reflection seismograph, since several companies worked the area from 1933 onward with this type of exploration. The principal block was taken by the Humble company in 1934. Two deep holes by Humble revealed the presence of structure, although both were dry. The Humble and Sun companies later contributed money and acreage toward the drilling of the discovery well. The production is from a sand in the Frio, about 1700 ft.

DESPITE the basic importance of slip in the plastic deformation of metals, and the considerable experimental investigation, thought, and speculation that have been devoted to the fundamental nature of these processes, surprisingly few data have been reported regarding the microscopic appear- [ ] ance and distribution of slip lines,[$] the external manifestation of the slip process. Photographs hitherto reproduced in the literature are in general at low or unspecified magnifications with no correlation to the prior shear. A single-crystal cylindrical tensile specimen of alpha brass about ½ in. in diameter, one of many previously prepared by H. L. Burghoff,1 was available for study. A plane about 3/16 in. wide, parallel to the specimen axis and normal to the plane containing the slip direction and the specimen axis, was ground and metallographically polished along the entire 5-in. gauge length. Heavy etching produced a surface free of both scratches and flow. The specimen was strained in tension until slip markings first became visible on the polished surface (Figs. I and 2). Restressing the crystal caused additional markings to appear at an initially lower [ ] stress than previously was required. Stretching the specimen to produce a dense concentration of slip lines caused such variations in level in the polished surface (normal to the slip direction) that microscopic study at higher magnifications became impossible. After annealing 15 hr. at 850°C., the specimen recrystallized to form two grains with a boundary approximately normal to the specimen axis and about midway along its length. Each was X-rayed, and two planes were again polished along the length of the specimen, in this case each parallel to the slip direction in one of the two crystals. A light longitudinal scratch parallel to the specimen axis was drawn down the center of each plane. A Huggenberger extensometer was attached to the crystal A, whose slip plane would have the higher resolved shear stress of the two, and the specimen was again strained in tension.

THE literature of milling is replete with papers devoted to the subject of ball milling, all of which no doubt have contributed in one way or another to progress in that art. In this paper reference will be made to only a few of the many authors, but the value of the contributions of all who have written on that subject is hereby acknowledged. With a few exceptions the efforts of most students of the subject have been devoted to laboratory investigations of principles. Davis1 was one of the first to report on plant-scale investigations and to present to mill men certain criteria for the guidance of ball-milling practices. His conclusions with respect to the significance of sizing analyses of classifier sands in their relation to the factors of mill speed and ball sizing are particularly referred to. Those conclusions were: I. If the balls are large or the speed of the mill is high, crowding will appear at the finer sizes in the classifier sands. 2. If the balls are small or the speed is low, crowding will appear at the coarser sizes in the classifier sands. 3. The indications are that best efficiency is obtained when the screen analysis of the sands show a minimum crowding at any size. The last conclusion was qualified by the statement that it had not been proved conclusively. It is surprising, however, that the literature of later years reveals little evidence that millmen have made any serious attempt to apply those criteria. This may, perhaps, be explained by the fact that the average plant-scale ball-milling problem presents so many variables that an investigation of any one of them encounters the problem of control of the others-a problem that often is unsurmountable in a small plant. In a large plant, in which there is a duplication of grinding units in parallel operation, opportunity may be afforded for determining the value of such criteria. Nevertheless, a study of published data from grinding circuits of both large and small plants suggests that either Davis' criteria have been tried and found inapplicable or have never been given consideration. For the purpose of testing Davis' conclusions and with improvement of ballmilling efficiency as the final objective, a test program was initiated in the concentrator of the New Cornelia branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation early in 1938. The practices of that plant have already been described.2 The fine-grinding units are arranged so that any one of eight units may be operated as a test unit and its results compared with those of the remaining units. All units receive similar feed from a common storage bin, in which the product of the fine-crushing plant is bedded by traveling tripper. The ball mills are all similar in size and operated at the same speeds, and are individually metered. The feeder conveyors of each unit are equipped with Merrick weightometers. The principal block was taken by the Humble company in 1934. Two deep holes by Humble revealed the presence of structure, although both were dry. The Humble and Sun companies later contributed money and acreage toward the drilling of the discovery well. The production is from a sand in the Frio, about 1700 ft.
