A knowledge of rock characteristics forms the foundation for the application of rock mechanics to engineering works. Hence, there has been an increased interest in the determination and proper utilization of rock properties data. Most numerical values quoted for rock properties are obtained from arbitrary tests and are not necessarily indicative of any intrinsic rock characteristics. Recent attempts to correlate these properties by statistical methods have attracted considerable attention, in the hope that these might give some clue to the fundamental properties. To date, correlation and regression techniques have been employed for this purpose. The use of statistics has also been deemed appropriate because of inhomogeneity and anisotropy in rocks. The problems have been further compounded by the lack of standardized methods of measuring rock properties. The various ASTM committees are still deliberating on these matters, but recommendations should be forthcoming in the near future. As more reliable data become available, the ability of geoscientists to find more meaningful relationships between rock properties will be greatly enhanced. The objective of this paper is to outline another statistical technique which might be useful in providing an insight into the relationships that exist between rock properties. This method does not attempt to predict rock characteristics, but rather compares the similarity or dissimilarity between properties. This enables rock properties to be classified into groups with similar intrinsic characteristics. The technique described is one form of factor analysis. It allows the results obtained to be depicted geometrically, so as to make ready visual examination possible.

Mine production blasting is a process of destruction of rock masses in order that ore may be extracted. Many open pit operations are faced with the apparently conflicting requirements of providing large quantities of fragmented rock for the processing plant and of minimizing the damage inflicted upon the surrounding pit slopes. A reasonable compromise between these two conflicting demands may often be found by means of simple engineering of production blasts. Many operations tend to rely too heavily upon traditional wall control techniques to alleviate a problem already created by the production blasts. Various production trends including use of larger blastholes and patterns have tended to aggravate the situation. These practices only serve to emphasize the need for engineered improvements. Central to blasting engineering is the process of systematic trial and evaluation. Changes to the blasting system should be made singly, starting with the simplest. This paper discusses simple changes involving drill pattern control, effective use of blastholes and explosives, adequate delaying including use of down-the-hole sequential techniques, effective utilization of free faces, and avoidance of "choked" situations. By directing explosive effort where it is needed, such changes generally result in a significant improvement of slope conditions and of production blasting cost and performance.

The mechanism of activation of ZnS by metal ions and the subsequent flotation induced by xanthate has been considered as a surface redox reaction. By ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of ZnS suspensions, the normally inert ZnS is caused to react with xanthate in the absence of activator. By similar UV irradiation, the rate of adsorption-exchange of activator ions at the ZnS-H2O interface is also increased. Mechanisms of these reactions are proposed and compared to current electrochemical and semiconducting models of sulfide flotation.

A comprehensive investigation has been undertaken to clarify how pellets are affected by alkali circulating in the blast furnace. The investigation has been performed with acid and basic pellets in a special furnace. Experiments were carried out to ascertain the influence of potassium on swelling and reducibility when added at different stages of reduction. After that, the significance of the quantity of potassium added in the hematite stage was studied. A parallel experiment with sodium as the alkali component was also con- ducted. Besides these vaporization experiments the effect of alkali on softening and reduction characteristics at high temperatures was investigated. The results showed that alkali always increases swelling, especially when added in the hematite stage. The addition of alkali increases reducibility of acid pellets during reduction from wustite to 70 % reduction. The softening temperature is significantly lowered by the addition of alkali and is, in any case, lower for acid pellets than for basic pellets. The microscopic studies showed that alkali ferrites can be formed irrespective of the influence of alkali on the slag phase.

The cost of mining during the past history of these mines has been excessive, principally by reason of the inefficiency of labor under the wage-system. The amount of labor performed per man was unsatisfactory; and Mr. Edmund B. Kirby, the general manager, decided to adopt the contract-system as a remedy. The ores treated by the Canada Consolidated Gold Mining Company at Deloro, Ontario, have been described in a paper read before the Institute in 1881. They are gold-bearing arsenical sulphurets of iron (mispickel), carrying the theoretical proportions of 42 per cent. of arsenic, 20 per cent. of sulphur, and the remainder iron. The gangue is quartz, calc spar, and some talcose, slaty rock, evidently resulting from the decomposition of the wall-rock, which on each side of the veins is syenitic granite. A variety of chemicals offered by Armak were evaluated as dewatering aids for aqueous slurries of silica sand, sparsand and feldspar; an established commercial dewatering aid was used as a control. A number of Armak’s potential dewatering aids yielded lower moisture retention values than did the commercial product on all of the mineral samples. In addition to the chemical dewatering evaluations, some of the mechanisms involved in the removal of water from these mineral samples were examined.

The technology involved in the Sherritt process for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from sulphide concentrates and mattes is presented in a manner which emphasises the chemistry of the process. The hydrometallurgical process takes advantage of the differing stabilities of the various oxy-acids of sulphur from thionates through thiosulphates to sulphate. Some separations are based upon stability differences, some upon kinetic differences and some upon valence state differences and similarities The engineering and economic factors involved in hydrometallurgy are not discussed in either detail or depth.

THROUGH the use of pressure and production records, formation properties and bottom-hole sample data, the performance of an oil reservoir may be studied analytically to define and evaluate the natural forces acting on and within the reservoir. Use is made of material-balance methods and the equations for natural water encroachment to estimate reserves. Methods for calculation of pressures are given. A study of the Jones sand, Schuler field, Arkansas, has been made and is given here to illustrate the value of the methods discussed.

Recent tests conducted at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. examined some aspects of the value of a continuous measurement of particle size to the operation and control of a mill grinding circuit. Inspiration's control objectives and kinds of control systems developed in recent years to attain these objectives are outlined. A description is given of the arrangement of the test circuit at Inspiration and also of the systems used to measure particle size of the cyclone overflow product in these tests. Use of on-line size measurement for the analysis and improvement of grinding circuit performance is illustrated by relating how two important relationships were detected. Finally, the performance of a particle-size-based control system is described, including preliminary conclusions as to increased productivity.

Price, production and drilling operations exceeded any year since 1930. A top price for crude of $2.55 was maintained from May 1 to November 6 and increased activity about coincides with that period. The average crude price for the year was: Bradford, $2.46; Kane-Butler, $2.34; Southwest Pennsylvania, $2.13. Production for the year exceeded 15 million barrels, an increase of about 2 million barrels over 1933. That this increase was more than justified by market demand is indicated by a reduction of 892,000 bbl. in stocks for the year. Two classes of data appear on Table 1, which are differentiated by footnote references. Where possible the .figures were obtained from individuals and companies that, from long acquaintance and varied contacts, are most capable of supplying an estimate where an estimate is necessary. The remaining data represent a rather careful compilation from all available published records (see p. 378). Drilling operations and production as summarized by the Oil City Derrick are as shown on Table 2.

During many years of service in the iron and steel industry I have frequently found, as have also many other engineers, that the common devices used for feeding coal into gas-producers are not what they ought to be in order to secure the best economy. The hopper-and-cone so generally used is familiar to all, and a brief study of its action will surely satisfy everybody that this device has several serious faults. In the first place, the charging is intermittent, and depends entirely upon an attendant. When the hopper is frequently emptied, it may work fairly well, but even then it suddeinly discharges into the hot producers a large body of coal, which is often violently converted into gas that rushes into the furnace, and, as the damper for the combustion-air cannot be regulated every time the producer is charged, there will be an excess of gas, which goes up the chimney unburned. EARTH-REISTIVITY measurements are often of service in obtaining information regarding geological formations, particularly when applied to structural problems. In such problems the masses of the various bodies are large, and have a corresponding effect on the average resistivity of the soil. Much work has been done using such measurements, but in general the method of interpretation employed is empirical. Since certain simple cases can be investigated mathematically, it appears to be quite sound to endeavor to apply the mathematical solutions to the practical results, in order to deduce from the latter such unknown quantities as depth. This paper deals with such a method of interpretation for the simple case of a single horizontal stratum. This paper outlines in a step-by-step approach all of the major tasks to be undertaken for the design of a complex multi-seam open pit coal mine. Examples are drawn from three such projects in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia, where computer techniques for equipment production rate estimation, mining block layout, and mine scheduling were used extensively. The paper is divided into two sections - Conceptual Planning and Detailed Planning; and the various tasks associated with these sections are discussed in detail, with examples of typical problems to be overcome.
