A circumferential-toothed bit with novel tooth form gave improved penetration performance. In this design the exterior flank of all teeth were vertical when in rolling contact with the hole bottom. Rock chips were generated by the interior flank of the tooth displacing the rock inwardly and downslope toward the center of the hole. A unique two-cone laboratory bit assembly enabled evaluation of numerous cone and tooth configurations. Some of the variables investigated, in addition to weight on bit, rotary speed and rock type, were tooth interference, percent tooth, hole bottom angle, attack angle and relief angle. Most tests were conducted dry on a brittle synthetic sandsone or a ductile quarried limestone. Tooth configurations were found to be more significant in the ductile material. This was attributed to the deeper tooth penetration before rock failure. These studies showed that the attack angle (angle beween interior flank of the tooth and rock surface) was the controlling variable; changing the tooth configuration from the assymetric or semi-wedge to the more conventional symmetric or wedge form reduced penetration performance; and penetration performance of circumferential-type cutters was directly proportional to rotary speeds up to 200 rpm. INTRODUCTION Much of the published literature on rock-chisel interactions describe experiments wherein symmetrical wedges are vertically loaded or impacted against a smooth rock surface.1-6 are is usually taken to insure that the indentation is not made near the edge of the rock specimen less erroneous data be obtained. The literature describes relatively few studies in which the investigator deliberately attempted to take advantage of an edge or free surface. In contrast, anyone who chips ice or breaks up a concrete sidewalk almost always works near an edge. Chisel "indexing," which has been considered by some investigator1,2,6,7 makes limited application of an edge or free surface. Probably the best documented investigation into applying this idea to drilling was that of Drilling Research Inc. at Battelle Memorial Institute.' Their "annular wing" percussion bit consisted of paired asymmetric chisels oriented so as to produce and move chips to the center of the hole. They predicted that the lowest energy requirement for chip generation would be achieved with a stepped hole bottom having a median angle of 45" to the horizontal. Results from limited tests showed that approximately 50 percent of the rock fragments were large and semi-circular in shape, as would be expected by a chisel impact near an edge. The remaining 50 percent were fine chips produced by the chisels in re-establishing the steps or ledges. Initial penetration rates with this bit were high, but they rapidly decreased. This was the result of excessive tooth wear caused by the constant friction on the gauge surfaces. The basic idea — circumferentially placed asymmetric chisels — still appears to have merit. If the concept could be applied to a rolling cutter bit, two of the shortcomings of the fixed chisel design could be overcome: (1) reduction in tooth friction, and (2) greatly increased cutter surface. Adapting asymmetric chisels to cutters rolling on an inclined hole bottom is restricted by bit geometry. The basic elements of roller rock-bit construction prevents the practical attainment of a 45" hole bottom angle. Nonetheless, experimentally it was considered desirable to investigate the influence of hole bottom angle to at least 40". This paper describes the laboratory studies conducted in evaluating the circumferential-toothed roller cutter rock bit. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE BIT ASSEMBLY The cost of constructing a sufficient number of conventional three-cone rock bits to investigate circumferential cutter performance was prohibitive. Instead, a novel two-cone laboratory assembly which used an external bearing system was designed and constructed. The external bearings made it possible to alter the journal bearing angles and thus allow a wide flexibility in cutter configuration. Fig. 1 shows the laboratory bit assembly, the various bearing mount plates and the appropriate roller cutters for drilling shallow holes having hole bottom angles of 0, 10, 20, 30 or 40". The bit was limited to a drilling depth of 1 1/2 in. at the gauge teeth and a hole diameter of 43/4 in. This more or less intermediate size bit was chosen because it gave a more realistic match between bit teeth and the rock than would a microbit. Also, the rock sample size required was convenient and easy to obtain. CIRCUMFERENTIAL CUTTERS The tooth configuration used in our initial studies is shown in the upper half of Fig. 2. All cutters used in this series had the same tooth form — 43" included tooth angle, 2" positive relief angle and a horizontal tooth flat width of 1/32 in. Each cone cuts alternate rows except for the gauge row. The row-to-row spacing in view was 1/4 in. Static loading tests conducted earlier with asymmetrical chisels had been used to establish this spacing. It has been shown that hydrogen may be made to serve as a rapid and eflicient reducing agent for Cu, Ni, Co, and Fe sulfides if a scavenging agent for hydrogen sulfide is intimately mixed with the sulfide particles being reduced. Accelerated reduction kinetics are demonstrated for nickel sulfide. Copper, nickel, and cobalt sulfides, when treated at certain temperatures in a combined reducing agent-scavenging agent system, are converted to voluminous masses of fibrous metal product. Studies have been carried out to determine the conditions which lead, on the one hand, to irregular poly crystalline fibers and, on the other, to long single crystal filaments a few microns in diameter. A mechanism is proposed to account for the formation of single crystal filuments. The sulfide minerals of Cu, Ni, Co, and Fe are an important source of these metals yet there has been comparatively little scientific effort devoted towards understanding reduction mechanisms of these minerals. This may be, in part, due to the fact that the most convenient reducing agents for carrying out such studies, viz., hydrogen and carbon, do not react appreciably with sulfides. We have found that the reaction of hydrogen with metal sulfides can be markedly accelerated by placing a scavenging agent for hydrogen sulfide in close proximity to the metal sulfide. A brief series of experiments demonstrating relative reduction rates is reported in this paper to illustrate the effect. With the reduction process thus accelerated we have observed an unusual type of reduction behavior on some of the sulfides investigated. Under certain conditions the metallic product of the reduction reaction takes the form of filaments growing outward from the sulfide particles. The present paper deals largely with efforts to classify the various types of growth forms observed. This study has shown that filamentary growths from sulfides take a much greater variety of forms than has heretofore been reported by Ercker,1 Hardy,2 and Nabarro and Jackson3 in their reviews of metallic growths from copper and silver sulfides. THERMODYNAMIC CONSIDERATIONS The thermodynamics for hydrogen reduction of metal sulfides is quite unfavorable. For the sulfides considered here equilibrium constants typically range from 10-3 to 10-5. These low equilibrium constants impose severe kinetic limitations on reduction since hydrogen sulfide must be transported out of the system at concentrations of only a few hundred ppm. Unless extremely high gas flow rates are employed the atmosphere surrounding any sulfide particle will always be essentially in equilibrium with the sulfide. If, however, one places an efficient scavenging agent for hydrogen sulfide in close proximity to the metal sulfide particles the concentration of H2S near the metal sulfide will be held to a very low value. This would permit the reduction reaction to proceed with little or no inhibition from a buildup of reaction product gas. It is well known that calcium oxide is capable of removing hydrogen sulfide from a hydrogen gas stream of low dew point.4 If a sufficient quantity of calcium oxide is mixed with the metal sulfide particles the reaction: CaO+H2S=CaS+ H2O [l] will substitute moisture in place of hydrogen sulfide in the gas stream and this will not affect, in a direct manner, the reaction: MeS +H2=Me + H2S [2] A convenient method of considering the thermodynamics of the combined reducing agent-scavenging agent system is to consider the atmosphere when the partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide is the same over both the metal sulfide and the scavenging agent, i.e., pH2S (1) =pH2S (2). As a consequence: pH2O (1) pH2(2) =K1K2 The chemical driving force for reduction will depend inversely upon the moisture content of the gas and will be 0 when, in the system, pH2O = pH2.K1K2. Table I lists values of the equilibrium constants for reduction and H2S scavenging reactions for a number of sulfides at several temperatures. Data are taken from Rosenqvist4,5 and Kelly.6 The equilibrium constant products calculated from this data show that the limiting level of gaseous reaction product has been increased by a factor of 10' to l04 as a result of substituting a reducing agent-scavenging agent system for a simple reducing agent system. One possible side effect which must be considered is the possibility that the moisture evolved in the scavenging reaction might cause the atmosphere in the system to be sufficiently oxidizing to favor the formation of oxide rather than metal. This possibility was examined by comparing the equilibrium constant products listed in Table I with equilibrium constants for hydrogen reduction of the respective metal oxides. Thin films (of mica have unique attributes that are exceptionally good for studies of high-field conduction mechamisms in thin-film insulators and the quantum mechanical tunneling of electrons from metal to metal. The principal advantages of using mica films are that the films are crystalline and the cleavage planes occur every 10Å. This property results in films whose thicknesses are integral multiples of 10Å and whose surfaces are uniformly parallel over sizable areas. Hence, very well-defined metal -mica-metal structures are possible. Furthermore, the fact that the insulator is split fro??! a bulk sample allows the index of refraction, dielectric constant, forbidden energy gap, and trapping levels and their density- to be obtained directly from measurements performed on thick samples Of mica rather than requiring that these properties be interred from the conduction characterrsties alone. In the work to he described, all the cleaving was done in a high vacuum just prior to the evaporation of metal elertrodes so as to avoid air contamination at the interfaces. Results of these studies indicate that the current through the 30 and 40Å films exhibited quantitative agreement with the theoretical voltage and temperature dependence derived by Strallon for the tunneling of electrons directly from metal to metal. Thicker films at room temperature exhibited volt-ampere curves suggesting Schottky emission of electrons from the cathode into the conduction band of mica. However, the thermal activation energy was smaller than that found from other measurements, and the experimsntal Schottky dielectric constant was larger than the square of the index of refraction. These facts would indicate that the electrons were being injected into polaron stales ill the iusulator. At low temperatures and high fields, the current through the thicker films did not exhibit the Fowler -Nordheim dependence as would be predicted by a simple extention of the theory of field emission into a vacuum. THE mechanism of electrons tunneling through insulating films has received considerable attention in the last few years due to the devices possible utilizing tunneling'-4 and the success of tunneling in the study of superconductivity.5,6 Until the recent paper by Hartman and chivian7 on the study of aluminum oxide, there had been no reported successful quantitative experimental fit to the theory. Their method of fabrication necessarily results in a polycrystalline insulator, the stoichiometry of which is nonuniform from one side to the other. This structure also introduces complications to the shape of the barrier which is set up by the insulator since the insulator possesses a spatially nonuniform band structure and dielectric constant. Due to these facts an analysis of the data in terms of a pviori barrier shape is of questionable validity. The use of muscovite mica not only overcomes these disadvantages but, as an insulating thin film, provides physical properties (dielectric constant. trapping levels and their densities, forbidden energy gap, and so forth) that are identical to the easily measured values of the bulk sample. Furthermore, it is a single-crystal insulator whose cleavage planes (10Å apart8,9) provide uniformly parallel surfaces of well-known separation. This material is therefore ideally suited to the study of electron-transport phenomena. Von Hippel10 using a 6.5-µ-thick sample was the first to observe the high-field conductivity (=5 x l06 v per cm) of mica. No attempt was made to develop an empirical formula, but Von Hippel concluded from intuitive arguments that the current was being space-charge limited by trapped electrons. Mal'tsev11 in a more recent investigation at high fields observed a dependence of the conductivity a on the field F of the form exp(ßF1/2). This dependence was attributed to the Frenkel effect,12,13 a Schottky type of emission from filled traps. No mention in the English abstract was made of the thicknesses of his samples or, and more important, of how well the value of ß fit Frenkel's theory. In 1962 Foote and Kazan14 developed a technique for splitting mica to a thickness of less than 100Å and observed a dependence of the current density j on the field of the form j = jo exp(ßF1/2) on a thin sample thought to be 40Å thick. Assuming that this was a Schottky emission process and that the appropriate dielectric constant for such a mechanism would be closer to a low-frequency value of 7.6, Foote and Kazan calculated from ß an independent thickness of the mica of 36Å. No further investigation was made of the phenomenon. However, the work reported in this paper indicates that the film measured by Foote and Kazan was probably 60Å thick, the error arising from the measurement of the very small metal-insulator-metal diode areas that were used, along with the diode capacitance and dielectric constant, to calculate the thickness. In the research reported in this paper, Foote and Kazan's technique was modified to cleave muscovite in a vacuum of 10-6 Torr, immediately after which metal electrodes were evaporated creating Au-mica-A1 diodes. Petroleum has been known in Japan since at least 668 A. D., for a picture shows the presentation, during that year, to the Emperor Tenchi (Tenji) of "burning water" and ('burning earth" by his subjects from Echigo Province, which today is the largest producer of petroleum in Japan. The burning water was doubtless petroleum and the burning earth either bituminous shale or oil-soaked earth or rock from near the oil seepages. The early methods of getting the oil were simple and similar to methods used today in Japan and in China. Where the seepages occurred, trenches or shallow wells were dug along the seepages and allowed to fill with oil, which was then bailed out; in some cases, they filled with oil and water and overflowed. During the 300 years following 1500 A. D., the use of petroleum in Echigo Province seems to have increased considerably, as compared with earlier centuries, and records show that in 1818 the depth of the wells had been greatly increased. Doubtless, they passed through the seepages and tapped the shallow oil-bearing strata; probably some of these deeper wells were dug before that time. The real value of petroleum was not recognized until early in the Meiji era, which began in 1868, when the Japanese learned that the kerosene that was being imported was derived from petroleum. Guided solely by information obtained from books, they refined the oil and increased the depth of their wells in order to increase the production. The deepest well, dug by hand, about this time was 894 ft.' (273 m.) and by 1874 the recorded production reached 3499 barrels. In 1876, Benjamin Smith Lyman prepared geological maps of the Echigo oil field, which were the first of such geological maps made in Japan, and based on these a more enlightened development of the oil fields began; the Japanese, however, still dug the wells by hand. Toward the end of the '80s) an American well-drilling outfit was secured, but the efforts to use it failed from lack of experience by the operators. Kansas maintained its fourth position on the list of all oil-producing states, for the ninth consecutive year. Total crude-oil production during 1935, as reported by the Oil & Gas Journal, was 53,364,446 bbl. on 97 per rent tank table calculations. This represented an increase of 17 per cent over the production in 1934, which had been the all-time peak of production in Kansas up to that time. Many of the 51 new discoveries of the year, listed in Table 2, did not have a pipe line outlet until about January, 1936; therefore did not contribute to the 1935 production of the state. The potential of all wells in Kansas at the end of the year was 998,-000 bbl. per day, and the daily allowable was 143,000 bbl. per day, showing proration to the extent of 14 per cent of capacity, under the rules of the State Corporation Commission. Several important new pipe lines were built into western Kansas by extending older lines from east to northwest, providing additional outlets for new crude-oil production, and increasing the service facilities from the older oil fields. The crude-oil price level remained unchanged throughout 1935 as it did in 1934, the price of Kansas 36" gravity crude being quoted at $1 per barrel. However, on Jan. 9, 1936, the price of this gravity oil was raised to $1.10 per barrel. Following the trend of the past several years, drilling activity was largely in western Kansas, and showed a still farther westward push from last year. A relatively high percentage of successful wildcat wells at a relatively shallow drilling depth, combined with the expiration of leased acreage assembled before the depression, caused the rapid exploration and development campaign, begun in 1934, to continue. This has caused the opening of more new fields in 1935 than during any previous year in the history of oil production in Kansas. A summary of the results of drilling in western Kansas is given in Table 2. Eastern Kansas had considerable drilling, showed six new fields or extensions of oil fields, but in the limited space of this paper such developments cannot be described.

The following article presents notes and data compiled and computed by the writer for use in the determination of: size and slope of mill launders, details of junction boxes and downspouts, and distribution of pulp. It also includes pulp formulas, volume of discharge through bushings, paths of discharging streams, banking of turns and curves. In the design of a concentrating mill, the draftsman usually considers launders to the extent of providing ample "head" for transmission of pulp from one department of the mill to another. The superintendent of construction aims to build his launders wide and deep, and on a slope steep enough to ensure positive flow. So launders are laid generally on too steep a slope, with the result that the repair gang works to maintain launder bottoms and sides against the erosive action of the conveyed pulp. To this end many kinds of liners have been devised: concrete, mastic, white iron, glass, rubber. True, the reduction of slope to the point where a pulp will flow with minimum wear, will minimize labor and expense; but when the desired slope is not predetermined, the millman hesitates to readjust his launder slopes by cut-and-try methods. To the end that the desired size and slope may be found readily, the writer has: (1) conducted experiments with pulps of different specific gravity, screen analysis and dilution; (2) gathered a few graphic data from standard reference works (such as Peele's Mining Engineer's Handbook and Taggart's Handbook of Ore Dressing); (3) computed several tables; and compiled results that have proved dependable for Utah Copper ore. It is quite possible that the following tables and graphs may not be applicable to all ores, but it is hoped that they may prove helpful, even in slight degree, in alleviating a portion of the trouble and migraine of some other millman. THE leaching method that was first widely used with the cyanide process consisted of percolation leaching of crushed ore in vats or leaching tanks. It was frequently necessary to separate the sand for cyanide treatment and discard the slimes, because only granular material allows the necessary amount of solution to percolate through it in a reasonable time. Later a slime process consisting of agitation followed by thick-ening and filtration was developed, and is extensively used to the pres-ent day. Even though the agitation-leaching slime process is considered satis-factory, the cost of plant and of operation are both greater than for a percolation-leaching plant of equal capacity. This situation has been recognized in the hydrometallurgical treatment of copper-bearing slimes; and a considerable amount of j work has been done at the Southwest Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines in an effort to develop a percolation method of treating slimes. Experimental work on the copper-leaching problem was started by H. E. Keyes1, and later tests were made by J. D. Sullivan and A. P. Towne2. The Bureau of Mines work resulted in the development of a process by which slimes were moisture-agglomerated with sand and crushed ore, to form a permeable mass through which solution could be trickled without breaking clown the glomerules. The agglomeration trickle-leaching method was devel-oped on a small scale and finally tried out in a 12-ton vat. Successful results were obtained as long is the leach solution was added slowly, so that the agglomerated charge was never flooded. If the leach solu-tion flooded the charge, the glomerules broke down and, the charge became impervious. There are two important difficulties in the application of the agglom-eration trickle-leaching-method to the cyanide process for gold and silver ores:

Introduction Grinding circuits are used to reduce the particle size of ores to the size desired for beneficiation or to grind a concentrate to a size required for final marketing. Grinding and classification can be carried out using either wet or dry circuits. Most sulfide ores are ground in wet circuits using one or more stages of grinding to obtain the necessary mineral liberation to produce a final concentrate which will meet the desired criteria. Iron ores are ground in circuits applicable to the particular ore using either wet or dry grinding. Nonmetallic minerals frequently present different requirements. Barite is likely to be subjected to wet grinding before beneficiating the ore; the concentrate is dried and then dry ground to meet market particle size requirements. The one thing that most mill operators will agree to is that there is no such thing as the "best" configuration of equipment for grinding. The circuit which works well on one ore may be totally unsatisfactory for another ore body. The general trend in the industry is flow sheet simplication with fewer parallel circuits instead of multiple-line circuits using small mills. This change in philosophy has been brought about by the saving of both capital and operating costs that may be possible with larger equipment. Remember that comminution is basically a very inefficient process, and that the costs can range upwards to 50% of the total milling costs. It, therefore, behooves the mill operator to carefully design his grinding and classification circuits. He must ascertain the optimal economic particle size for beneficiation and then make certain he has achieved the best balance between capital and operating costs to achieve the desired mesh of grind. Equipment Grinding circuits consist of one or more pieces of equipment to grind the solids. Generally, these circuits include one or more grinding mills, classification equipment, and the necessary materials handling equipment such as pumps, pipelines, and conveyors. There are many different types of equipment available which are used to grind and classify ores and minerals. Following is a tabulation of most of the equipment used for wet and/or dry grinding.

So launders are laid generally on too steep a slope, with the result that the repair gang works to maintain launder bottoms and sides against the erosive action of the conveyed pulp. To this end many kinds of liners have been devised: concrete, mastic, white iron, glass, rubber. True, the reduction of slope to the point where a pulp will flow with minimum wear, will minimize labor and expense; but when the desired slope is not predetermined, the millman hesitates to readjust his launder slopes by cut-and-try methods. To the end that the desired size and slope may be found readily, the writer has: (1) conducted experiments with pulps of different specific gravity, screen analysis and dilution; (2) gathered a few graphic data from standard reference works (such as Peele's Mining Engineer's Handbook and Taggart's Handbook of Ore Dressing); (3) computed several tables; and compiled results that have proved dependable for Utah Copper ore. It is quite possible that the following tables and graphs may not be applicable to all ores, but it is hoped that they may prove helpful, even in slight degree, in alleviating a portion of the trouble and migraine of some other millman. ANY information that will increase the accuracy of our knowledge of the conditions prevailing in petroleum reservoirs should be of direct value in the determination of the proper operating technique as well as in the estimation of reserves and of ultimate production. The obvious method of obtaining this information is by studying a sample of the reservoir rock and its contents. In any such study, the problem of primary importance and maximum difficulty is that of getting the core to the surface in such a manner that its original fluid content is undis-turbed, which has so far proved to be an impossible task. Though it might be rash to say this will never be done, it is certainly safe to assume that a method for the recovery of a core at the surface in its undisturbed original state may not be developed in the immediate future, and certainly will not be forthcoming without a great deal of costly experimentation. Therefore any information that may be obtained that will help to correlate the state of a core (its fluid saturation) at the surface with its condition at the time it was drilled should be of value to the petroleum industry. The experiments described in this paper were undertaken with the purpose of determining, if possible, any relationship that might exist between the saturation of a core at the surface and its original fluid content. No consideration has been given to the question of contamina-tion by penetration of drilling water, since this problem has been exten-sively studied by other investigators. 1-3 Furthermore, it was regarded as being outside the scope of the present experiments, which were con-cerned only with the effect of pressure reduction upon the liquid content of cores. In an experimental study of this sort involving a large number of variables, accurate control of all factors is very important. The essen-tial and obvious procedure is to vary systematically one factor or condi-tion while keeping all the others constant, which necessarily involves a rather protracted and sometimes tedious experimental program.

FOLLOWING the presentation at the annual meet-ing of the paper "Recent Developments in Classi-fication," by A. M. Gaudin and W. L. Remick, the discussion presented below took place: H. N. Spicer : I haven't been able to study this paper closely, but I would like to ask 'Mr. Remick something regarding the work done by the mechanical classifier. The screen test given here would appear to show that the classi-fier did very, very poor work. The 44 per cent efficiency calculated from this equation is much lower than any ordinary operation. Nothing is stated regarding the de-tails. of the operation, the slope of the classifier, the dilu-tion, the speed, and such other factors that influence results. I would also like to know something of the material that was worked. The Manhattan schist that I have seen them digging out of the subways is of a flaky nature, so that in any classifier, you might get the factor of fine flakes floating over. Was the same material used in the hydrotator test? The screen tests vary a whole lot. Mr. Remick: You will notice the Dorr classifier han-dled the circulating load. This classifier naturally was run in closed circuit. I should like to be pardoned for quoting from Mr. Bates' paper of last year on "Classifica-tion in the Witwatersrand Mills." In this report only two efficiencies were given for the so-called straight type Dorr classifier. One was 44.6 per cent and the other 61.6. I don't know whether or not an average should be taken for the proper performance. I assume that that test was performed under better conditions, yet the efficiencies av-eraged only 53.1 per cent. I am afraid I am taking the words out of Professor Taggart's mouth, but he has told me that the Dorr classi-fier at Columbia is not the proper size to work with the Hardinge mill with which it is connected. This indicates only the inadvisability of putting commercial sized mat chines in a school laboratory. You cannot, he says, get the proper tonnage from the Hardinge mill to work the Dorr classifier and get the best results. Mr. Bates' results show higher efficiency with the lower capacity. Now, on the other hand, I assume that the classifier described in Mr. Bates' paper was probably run at the proper capacity.. It is a rather puzzling question.

INTRODUCTION An understanding of the role of water in controlling the stability of rock masses is central for a rational approach to the subject. The presence of water can hinder mining opera- tions in two ways: 1. excessive discharge 2. excessive pressure It should be noted that if the rock mass is very tight, excessive pressures can exist without large discharges. Alternatively, if abundant water is available and the rock mass is open, then substantial discharges can occur under quite small pressures. The problems associated with excessive discharge are usually well understood by the mining engineer. Vehicle mobility is inhibited, some areas are flooded and hence become inaccessible; at best, a costly nuisance exists. The methods of solving these problems are also well-known to mining engineers. They generally involve tapping the source of the excessive discharge and channeling it away in such a manner that any hindrance to the mining operation is minimized. The effects of water pressure on the stability of rock masses are less obvious and the following will be devoted solely to this aspect of the problem. The manner in which water pressures enter into the consideration of stability is made clear by an understanding of the concept of effective stress. THE CONCEPT OF EFFECTIVE STRESS The simplest mechanical model for the problem of rock slope stability consists of a rough, rigid block sliding down an inclined plane under the influence of gravity. This is illustrated in [Fig. 1]. The down-slope component of the weight of the block tends to produce movement which is resisted by the shearing force generated by friction along the base of the block. It has been known for many years that the alloy containing 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. aluminum can be hardened, like steel, by quenching from a suitable temperature, and that the hardened alloy can be softened again by annealing or drawing the temper. It does not seem to be generally appreciated, however, that the effect of the first slight reheating after quenching is actually increased hardness, the softening effect not taking place until a certain temperature of "drawing" has been exceeded. This paper gives the results of a few experiments on various specimens of cast 10 per cent. aluminum bronze, quenched for maximum hardness, and subsequcntly annealed at different temperatures. The hardness measurements were made with both a scleroscope and a standard Swedish Brinell machine; some peculiarities of the scleroscope test on this material are described. The author is not aware of many previous investigations of the hardness of this alloy when quenched and drawn, but two important papers on the subject should be mentioned. The earliest was by Portevin and Arnou,1 in which it was stated that tempering quenched 10 per cent. aluminum bronze at 400" C. increased the hardness as compared with the quenched untempered alloy and that reheating above that temperature ' was necessary to obtain any softening effect. A later paper was by Seidell and Horvitz,2 who mentioned Portevin and Arnou's work, but did not report any increase in hardness obtained
