A growing demand for longer service life of gas turbines has placed increasingly rigorous requiret~rents upon superalloys employed for that application. Long-titne testing at high temperature has revealed that phase transformations occur in all superalloys. A common one of particular interest is o formation. Presented here are studies made to identify a and to characterize its formation and effect on properties in three cast nickel-base superalloys—IN 100 alloy, alloy 713C, and alloy 713LC. Methods are discussed by which o can be eliminated or inhibited in IN 100 alloy and alloy 713C. Evidence was obtained to indicate that some types of o may be more detrimental than others. Limitations in the electron vacancy approach to o prevention are pointed out, and it is shown how alternative approaches, such as reducing a complex superalloy matrix to the form of a pseudo-ternary system permitting equilibrium diagram treatment, lead to additional insights into the formation of in these alloys. AROUND 1960. Beiber1 developed IN 100 alloy, which still remains one of the strongest commercially available nickel-base superalloys. The principle used in the design of this alloy was to produce large quantities of y' phase in a y matrix through the use of copious amounts of aluminum and titanium. In 1963, ROSS' showed that when certain heats of this alloy were held for a long time at 1650°F they formed an acicular phase, subsequently identified as a.3 a is a hard and brittle phase first discovered in the Fe-Cr system by Bain and Griffiths.4 They termed it the "B" constituent. Subsequently this same phase was found in other systems, primarily those of the transition elements, and acquired the name "a" by which it is now known. The crystal structure of the a phase was first determined in the Fe-Cr system in 1950.5 It was shown to be tetragonal with a c/a ratio of about 0.52. as is the case with a found in other systems. This characteristic crystal structure is now the means by which a is identified. In superalloys, such as IN 100 alloy. large amounts of o impair the high-temperature creep strength and drastically reduce room-temperature tensile ductility. Discovery of o phase in some heats of IN 100 alloy quickly led to investigations of other superalloys for similar transformations. It was found that many of the stronger, more highly alloyed. super-alloys were indeed susceptible to o formation. This investigation has been concentrated on three commercial alloys: IN 100 alloy, alloy 713C, and alloy 713LC. IMD A detailed study has been made of the phase transformations and their relation to a formation along with a consideration of electron vacancy approaches for predicting a-forming propensity in these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Phase transformations were studied by light and electron microscopy, electron diffraction, microprobe investigations, and X-ray diffraction. Specimens for light micrographic examination were prepared by conventional grinding and polishing followed by etching with glyceregia (2:l HC1/HNO3 + 3 glycerine by volume). Photomicrographs of stress-rupture specimens were taken adjacent to the fracture unless otherwise noted in the text. Negative replicas for electron microscopy were taken from surfaces electropolished with a solution of 15 pct H2SO4 in methanol. For carbon extraction replication, a solution of 10 pct HC1 in methanol was used. A Siemens Elmiskop I was used for all electron microscopy. Selected-area diffraction studies were made at 80 kv using evaporated aluminum for standardizing the patterns. A nondispersive electron microprobe attachment was used to analyze the extracted precipitates chemically. The fluorescent X-rays were recorded using a flow counter containing P10 gas (90 pct Ar-10 pct methane) with a beryllium window and a single-channel pulse-height analyzer. The pulses from the analyzer were passed to a scaler-ratemeter and differential curves of counting rate vs pulse amplitude were obtained. The base line of the analyzer was driven with a synchronous motor at 0.5 v per min and a channel width of 0.5 v. The time for 105 counts was printed out for each 0.5-v increment. The microscope was operated at 80 kv with beam currents of 1 to 20 pa. This equipment detects elements from atomic number 13 to 40. X-ray diffraction studies were usually made on residues electrolytically extracted in 10 pct HC1 in H2O, although in one case a pattern was obtained from an etched surface of a metallographic specimen. A Siemens Crystalloflex IV was used with iron-filtered CoKa radiation. X-ray patterns were recorded using a goniometer speed of : deg per min. The scintillation counter and pulse-height analyzer operated at a channel height of 10 v and a channel width of 12 v. The equipment was calibrated with a powdered gold standard. The residues usually contained a number of phases. several of which could not be found in the ASTM card file. In addition, as is shown for the case of a phase in IN 100 alloy, other phases had a somewhat different lattice parameter from that reported in the ASTM card file, making it difficult to separate and identify constituents by comparison with ASTM d spacings. The most important development in connection with the search for oil in Australia during 1940 was on the legislative side. Prior to 1939 legislative enactments in the various states with regard to prospecting for petroleum were such as to prohibit large-scale effort and to bar the major oil companies from operating. The preparation of the Wade Model Bill for the Commonwealth Government in 1939 and the acceptance of the Bill in principle by all States, has gone far to remove these obstacles. Amending Acts, largely based on the Alodel Bill, have now been passed by all States with the exception of New South Wales and Tasmania. In New South Wales an Amending Bill is being drafted, while the Govern-ment of Tasmania is preparing to introduce an Amending Bill provided there is any demand for it. Noteworthy developments followed immediately on the passing of these Amending Acts. The Shell Company (1)1 and the Superior Oil Company of California (2) too$ up large areas in Queensland and com-menced work during 1940. Caltex acquired a big tract of country in the Kimberley district of Western Australia (3) and has made application for an area in the Territory of Papua. An Australian company, The Phoenix Oil Extraction Co., has obtained a permit to prospect over an extensive area bordering the south coast of Western Australia (4). Other developments are foreshadowed. The Shell Company is making an intensive examination of its area in Queensland (I). Geological, geophysical and aerial surveys are in progress. Caltex has three geological parties in the held in Western Australia while Superior Oil Company of California has done some geological work in the interior of Queensland (2). None of these concerns envisages a drilling campaign in the near future. Much exploratory work is necessary. Further work has been done by the companies that were already operating in 1939, though an important Australian company - Oil Search—has abandoned the work of prospecting in Australia. This company has subleased its holdings, at North West Cape in Western Australia (;), to Caltex on a royalty basis. The company also maintains its holdings in, and connection with, the Australasian Petroleum Company Proprietary Limited, which is a combination of Standard Oil (New Jersey), Anglo-Iranian and Oil Search. This company is operating in the territories of Papua and New Guinea. Drilling Victoria.—Although a good deal of drilling was done in the LaBes Entrance Tertiary Basin of Victoria (7), no appreciable production of oil was obtained. In order to test the extent and possibilities of the oil-bearing sand in this region, the Commonwealth and State Governments jointly put down six scout boreholes to depths of between 1200 and I500 it. The results were nega tive. A deeper exploratory horehole put down by the Governments at Seacornbe, or 26

The equilibrium constants developed by Souders, Selheimer and Brown1' have been very useful tools in predicting vapor-liquid equilibria during the past five years. Their equilibrium constants were computed by assuming ideal solutions and recognizing the deviations of vapors from ideal gas laws. The same fundamental concepts were used by Lewis and co-workers8 for predicting vaporization phenomena by means of fugacities. The equilibrium constant is defined by equation 1: y\x =K [1] in which K = equilibrium constant, y = mol fraction of a constituent in the vapor phase, x = mol fraction of the constituent in the equilibrium liquid phase. The equilibrium constants are a function of temperature and pressure and might be considered as replacing the ratio of the vapor pressure to the total pressure of Raoult's law. They may be used to compute the vapor or saturation pressure of a liquid or the dew point of a vapor for any pressure or temperature from the analysis of the mixture much as Raoult's law is used. Likewise, the quantity of a mixture that will vaporize at any equilibrium temperature and pressure and the composition of the vapor and liquid may be calculated. The purpose of this paper is to review the available equilibrium data of interest in petroleum production, to discuss the auxiliary physical properties of the hydrocarbons, and to present typical uses of the equilibrium constants. The particular applications chosen are the computation of the results of stage separation of crude oil and natural gas, the calcula: tion of a pressure-volume curve of a crude oil-natural gas mixture, and information gleaned from a consideration of reservoir equilibria.

At a large meeting of the members of the American Fund for French Wounded it which Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt presided and at which Mrs. B. Girault Lathrop, President of the Paris Administration A. F.F. W., gave a most interesting address, special rows of seats were reserved for the members of the W. A. A. I. M. E. Those who were unable to be present will be glad to hear that Mrs. Lathrop complimented our organization on having supplied the largest dispensary operated by the A. F. F. W. and the Red Cross in northern France. The A. F. F. W. is going to erect an American Memorial Hospital at Rheims and it is hoped that the one hundred beds in the hospital will be endowed in memory of the men who gave their lives for the liberty of the world. It will be possible not only to endow beds, for which sums of $6000 each are needed, but also to give, as. memorials, sun- parlors at a cost of $10,000 each, two roof gardens at $5000 each, a laundry at $10,000 and a garage at $10,000. The New York Section has undertaken to endow a heel in memory of members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives in the Great War. Perhaps other Sections or groups of Sections may wish to do the same thing, or if no other Section cares to assume so much responsibility possibly individuals may like to join the fund already growing in New York, in which case they should send their contributions to Mrs. W. Y. Westervelt, 1 Lexington Ave., New York, N. Y.

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9, A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special, attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining-maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that, the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library y forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified; indexed, and made availableto other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either y purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

The accompanying Fig 1 is a graphical scheme of intermediate accuracy for expediting interconversions of mol, weight, and volume percents. This chart consists of a family of curves of mol or atomic or volume percent plotted against weight percent, each curve in the family providing for a certain ratio of molecular or atomic weights or densities. Thus, the whole range of variations is presented in a very familiar format, and the conversion is effected simply by choosing the proper curve and reading off the required values. An entire series of conversions for a given binary system can be found by following the appropriate curve. It is interesting to examine the analytical geometry of the plots. The curves, which must fit into a square and all join at the 0 and 100 pet points, may be shown to be hyperbolas with their centers on the extension of the diagonal of the square which they intersect. It was recently reported' that the initial transformation in (100) iron whiskers grown in the bcc condition can be nucleated on heating in regions of the whisker which are not necessarily the hottest. Although this behavior was observed1 several times, its sporadic nature precluded any documentation other than occasional visual observations during hot-stage optical-microscope heating experiments. The purpose of this communication is to report how, in one instance, the a-y transformation in such a (100) iron whisker was initiated in a region which was clearly at a lower temperature than an adjacent region which did not transform at all.

Large deposits of titaniferous magnetite occur associated with anorthosite and gabbro in the Lake Sanford area, Essex County, New York. The ore, gabbro, and anortbosite show consanguineous relations. Anorthosite grades through gabbroic anortbosite into gabbro but is locally intruded by gabbro. Structural and petrographic evidence suggests that gabbro was differentiated from anorthosite by filter pressing. Field and laboratory study of ore occurrences indicates that an ore residuum concentrated in the gabbro through magmatic segregation' by normal crystallization and flowage. Ore occurs as bands which grade into gabbro, and also as large masses which replace anorthosite. Ore in the gabbro is finer grained and richer in ilmenite than ore in anorthosite. Introduction The Lake Sanford area lies in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, in the southeast portion of the Santanoni Quadrangle (Fig. I), and there are four ore bodies in the area immediately surrounding Lake Sanford. The area lies 30 miles by highway from the railroad at North Creek. The deposits were discovered in 1826, and from then until 1858 iron was produced in small quantities. They were idle from 1858 to 1906. Between 1906 and 1913, extensive development work was carried on. These early attempts to produce iron ore were thwarted by transportation difficulties and by the titanium content of the ore, which, ironically, has been the element responsible for the present development. In 1941 the National Lead Co., Titanium Division, developed the Sanford Hill ore body and is now producing ilmenite and magnetite concentrates.18 The Defense Plant Corporation is extending the railroad to the property from North Creek and is building a sintering plant to treat the magnetite concentrate. Investigations OF the Deposits* Early studies of the Lake Sanford titaniferous magnetite deposits were made by Emmons in 1842,l2 by Kemp, in 1897-98'0 and by Newland in 1908.22 Singewald26 and Osborne23 considered these deposits along with numerous other titaniferous magnetite deposits in 1913 and 1928, respectively. None of these reports entailed a detailed study of the ore occurrence in this area. The present study was begun in 1940. Although the liquid-solid cyclone is a relatively recent innovation in the field of coal preparation, various authors have already indicated three distinct applications to operations encountered in the modern tipple. Driessen's articles and work at the Dutch State Mines exhibited its possibilities in the beneficiation of fine coal with apparently high efficiencies down to the 200-mesh fraction. 1 2 3 4 Other publications point out its use as a recoverer, thickener, and preliminary dewatering agent of fine coal which in too many cases is being wasted due largely to former high operating cost limitations 5 6. Finally, certain authors have emphasized the practicability of applying the cyclone to the elimination of coarse and fine solids from water slurries in the tipple in order to produce a water suitable for recycle purposes containing only minute particles far below the 200-mesh size.6 This would result in a closed water system for many cases, with its accompanying economic and operating advantages to locations where water quantity and quality problems are severe; better operation of washing equipment using a consistent water devoid of injurious fine particles; lowered maintenance costs due to the lesser abrasion resulting when the fine abraiding particles are removed; and the greater ease of disposing of refuse streams of reduced volume containing greater percentages of solids.

THE safety lamp is the most common and convenient apparatus for detecting inflammable gases in mines, the presence of gas being shown by a blue flame, called the cap, if the wick has been lowered to suppress the luminous flame. The height of the cap increases with the proportion of gas and with the temperature of the lamp flame. Lamps of the Wolf type, the fuel of which is benzine, have a hotter flame than lamps in which vegetable oils are used, such as the Davy, and the Clanny, and are more sensitive than the latter and their many modifications. The Piehler alcohol lamp gives a still higher cap while the Clowes hydrogen lamp is most sensitive of all. While the effect of the temperature of the source of ignition is well known, the writer knows of no previous attempt to correlate the change of this temperature with change of the height of the cap produced. In order to determine the height of the cap at various temperatures, it was necessary to have a source of ignition the temperature of which could he accurately controlled over a considerable range. This condition was met by a coil of wire of high fusing point heated by an electric current controlled by a variable resistance. The use of a coil offered the further advantage of freedom from complications due to the flame of a burning fuel. Such a flame, being itself of variable height, would to some extent raise or lower the elevation of the base of the cap and therefore add to the difficulty of determining the height of the cap. Besides this, the presence of a small cap from the lamp fuel, commonly known as the "fuel cap, " would interfere with the observation of small gas caps. After some experiment, a coil was made of platinum wire, No. 26, diameter 0.016 in. The coil was 17/64 in. (6.746 mm.) in outside diameter and had eight full turns in a length of ½ in. (12.69 mm.). A study has been made of the growing, annealing, and diffusion parameters in PbSe, Pb1-ySnySe, and Pb1-xSnxTe. Single crystals of these materials have been grown using the Bridgman technique. For all of the above materials the as-grown crystals are p type with high carrier densities. To reduce the carrier concentration and increase the carrier mobility, the samples are annealed either isothermally or by a two-zone method. From isothermal anneals, the liquidus-solidus boundary on the metal-rich side of the stoichiometric composition has been obtained for some alloys of Pb1-xSnxTe and on both the metal- and seleniunz-rich sides for PbSe and alloys of Pbl-ySnySe. In Pbo.935 Sno.065 Se carrier concentrations as low as 5 x1016 Cm-3 and mobilities as high as 44,000 sq cm v-1 sec-1 at 77°K have been obtained. Inter diffusion parameters mere also studied. The ddiffusion experiments mere identical to the isothermal or two-zone annealing experiments except that the samples were removed prior to complete equilibration. The resulting p-n junction depths were determined by sectioning and thermal probing. Inter diffusion coefficients for various temperatures were calculated for both PbSe and Pb0.93Sn0.0,Se. RECENTLY, there has been considerable interest in the PbTe-SnTe and PbSe-SnSe alloys with the rock salt crystal structure. The unusual feature of these systems is the variation of energy gap EG with composition. Several investigations1-3 have shown that EG for the lead chalcogenides decreases as the tin content increases, goes through zero, and then increases again with further increase in tin content. The possibility of obtaining an arbitrary energy gap by selecting the composition is an especially attractive feature of these alloys for applications involving long-wavelength infrared detectors and lasers. In addition, some unusual magneto-optical, galvanomagnetic, and thermomag-netic effects should occur for alloys with low band gaps. If uncompensated low carrier density crystals can be obtained, then a small carrier effective mass, a large dielectric constant, and the resultant high carrier mobility should yield enormous effects at low temperature in a magnetic field. The relative variation of the energy gap with pressure should also be very large for these low gap materials. The primary purpose of this paper is to provide some information concerning the preparation of low carrier concentra- tion, high carrier mobility, and homogeneous single crystals with a predetermined alloy composition. I) DETERMINATION OF ALLOY COMPOSITIONS In all of the work described in this paper, the composition of lead and tin chalcogenides in the alloys was determined by electron microprobe analysis. Separate X-ray spectrometers are used to make simultaneous intensity measurements of the Pb La1 and Sn La1 lines emitted by the sample under excitation by a beam of 25 kev electrons focused to a spot about 2 µm in diam. These intensities are compared to the intensities of the same lines emitted by standards under the same conditions. The standards used are the terminal compounds of each pseudobinary system, i.e., PbTe and SnTe for Pbl-xSnxTe alloys, PbSe and SnSe for Pbl-ySnySe alloys. The composition of the sample is then obtained from theoretical calibration curves which relate the weight fractions of lead and tin in the alloy to the measured ratios of X-ray intensities for the sample and the standards. The lead and tin calibration curves for each alloy system were calculated by using corrections for backscattered electrons,4 ionization,5 and absorption,6 and assuming that the atom fraction of tellurium or selenium in the sample and standards is exactly +. Results obtained by using the microprobe are in good agreement with those obtained by wet chemical analysis. II) CRYSTAL GROWTH FROM THE VAPOR Early work on the vapor growth of PbSe was carried out by Prior.7 He used small chips of Bridgman-grown single crystals as the source material and frequently converted the whole charge of a few grams into one crystal. In the present work, vapor growth occurred using a metal-rich or chalcogenide-rich two-phased alloy powder as the source material. Small, nearly stoichiometric crystals are formed on the walls of the quartz tube. The procedure will now be described in detail. Initially, a 100-g charge containing (metal)o.51(chalco-genide)o 49 proportions or (metal)o.49(chalcogenide)o. 51 proportions of the as-received elements in chunk form are placed in a fused silica ampoule. After the ampoule is loaded, it is evacuated with a diffusion pump and sealed. The sealed ampoule is placed in the center of a vertical resistance furnace. The region containing the ampoule is heated to about 50°C above the liquidus temper-ature for the particular composition used. After about one-half hour at temperature, the elements are reacted and the molten material homogenized. The ampoule is quenched in water. The quenched ingot is crushed to a coarse powder for vapor growth experiments and to a fine powder for the isothermal annealing experiments which are discussed in a later section. I. INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESULTS. The field-work upon which this paper is based was done in the summer of 1910, and was made possible by the courtesy of the Imperial Copper Co., which gave me access to its property. For their kindness in this respect I wish to express my thanks to W. F. Staunton and Meade Goodloe. Moreover,. B. F. Smith and G. B. Gentry, mining engineers in the employ of the company, gave invaluable assistance by placing maps,. etc., at my disposal, and by discussing with me the problems of the district; and it is a great pleasure to acknowledge this indebtedness to them. In order that the significance of some of the details that follow may be better appreciated at first reading, a general outline of the conclusions reached is given here. In the Silverbell mining-district a series of Palaeozoic limestone blocks is completely surrounded by post-Palaeozoic igneous rocks, intruded in the following order: alaskite, alaskite-porphyry, biotite-granite, andesite, and quartz-porphyry. The biotite-granite is believed to represent a differentiation of the. magma from which the alaskite-porphyry came ; and this conclusion-has an important hearing on the origin of the ores. The intrusion of both alaskite-porphyry and biotite-granite was followed by the emission of magmatic waters, which sericitized and silicified the alaskite-porphyry and granite, and produced in the limestone, by the addition to it of silica, iron, and alumina, great masses of garnet, quartz, and wollastonite. Following close upon these solutions came metal-bearing magmatic waters, which impregnated porphyry, granite, and alas kite with cupriferous pyrite, and deposited in the garnet zones chalcopyrite and copper-bearing pyrite that make important bodies of contact-metamorphic ores. Secondary enrichment has taken place in the disseminated ores in the igneous rocks,. raising their copper-content to 2 per cent. in some cases,. and extensive drilling has been undertaken to block out these deposits. East of the contact-metamorphic deposits there is a fissure-vein of lead-silver ore in the quartz-porphyry. This rock is distinctly younger than the alaskite-porphyry and the granite; and the lead-silver ores belong, therefore, to a period of mineralization distinctly later than the copper-deposition.

THE structures of quenched eutectoid and hypereu-tectoid Fe-Cu alloys have been examined by X-ray diffraction and by optical and electron microscopy. The relevant portion of the Fe-Cu phase diagram is given in Fig. 1. Several values have been reported for the solubility of copper in a Fe at the eutectoid temperature, including 1.4 wt pct by orton' and 2.13 wt pct by Wreidt and Darken.2 Alloys containing 4.8 and 7.5 wt pct Cu have been prepared from two batches of Ferrovac E iron (0.005C and 0.013C) and electrolytic tough pitch copper (99.90 Cu). Specimens of dimensions 0.8 by 0.8 by 0.1 in. were cut from hot-rolled material, austenitized, and quenched into brine at 25°C. Similar specimens were also cooled in the furnace, after a short soaking treatment at 1100°C, at a rate estimated to be 10°C per min in the temperature range of 900" to 500°C. X-ray diffractometry was performed on quenched and on furnace-cooled bulk specimens using iron radiation. Only a bcc phase could be detected in all samples. Lattice parameters were calculated from measurements on four lines, made up of two resolved high-angle doublets. Comparisons were made against a silicon standard. Results are shown in Table I. Based on X-ray diffraction studies of a series of alloys of lower copper concentrations, orton' estimated that the tattice constant of a Fe at 25°C increases 0.0014A per wt pct Cu in solution. Extrapolating Norton's data, it may be concluded that all copper was retained in solution in the brine-quenched 4.8 pct Cu alloy, and that approximately 5 pct Cu was also held in solution on quenching the 7.5 pct Cu alloy. Typical microstructures of brine-quenched specimens, as observed by optical microscopy, are shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Precipitation of the E phase (copper-rich) occurred along the y grain boundaries on quenching the 7.5 pct Cu alloy, rendering them readily detectable in the microstructure, Fig. 3. The original boundaries in the 4.8 pct Cu specimens were gener- ally not discernible, however. This indicates that the z phase which was seen in the higher-copper alloy was probably of proeutectoid origin. Thin foils for transmission electron microscopy were obtained from bulk specimens by spark machining to 0.006 in. thickness, followed by electrolytic polishing. The Homestake mine, located in western South Dakota, was discovered in 1876. The first reported production was in I 878. Total production through 1965 is 6,554,249 troy ounces of silver and 27,961,276 troy ounces of gold, worth $987,000,000 at present prices. Precambrian sedimentary formations at Lead total 20,000 feet. The Poorman Formation, the oldest, is chiefly ankerite carbonate. The Homestake Formation is iron-magnesium carbonate. The younger formations are argillaceous with some quartzites. The Cambrian Deadwood Formation unconformably overlies the Precambrian. All are cut by Tertiary intrusives. Sideroplesite schist of the Homestake Formation was converted to cummingtonite schist in the zones of higher-grade metamorphism. The Precambrian rocks show the effects of extreme isoclinal folding. A second stage of folding ( cross folds) may have been caused by the Tertiary intrusives. All folds plunge to the southeast. The Homestake ore bodies are pipe-like replacements of the Homestake Formation in zones of cross folding. It is believed that dilatation of the schists has increased permeability in these zones. Chloritization of the schists is the most widespread effect of the mineralization which is divided into four stages. Principal minerals of the first stage are quartz, chlorite, and arsenopyrite; in the second stage, quartz, ankerite, and pyrrhotite. In the third stage only pyrrhotite was deposited. The fourth stage followed the intrusions of Tertiary dikes and deposited mostly pyrite and calcite. Gold accompanies all stages and is always the last mineral to be deposited. It is most closely associated with arsenopyrite of the first stage but can be interpreted as having been deposited during the fourth stage and superimposed on the products of the earlier stages.

In the discussion of Sir Frederick Abel's paper on " Accidents in Mines," read before the Institution of Civil Engineers,? much was said about the dangerous properties of coal-dust, and several instances were given of the successful use of a spray of water, water and compressed air, or exhaust-steam from an engine, to keep the mine SUEciently damp to prevent the formation of dust clouds. Methods of preventing shots from blowing out; of using water cartridges to prevent flame ; and of using lime cartridges, wedges and other means of breaking down the coal were also discussed. The need for standardizing methods of arriving at definite conclusions regarding the cleanability of a given coal, and for measuring the performance of coal-cleaning equipment, is constantly increasing. Earlier notes by the author on this subject are amplified in this paper, because he believes that better preparation of bituminous coal is a partial solution of the coal operators' troubles. Washability Studies The term "washability" of coal was coined when washing was the universal method of separating coal from its impurities by utilizing their difference in specific gravity. This and analogous terms are still used in their broad sense although pneumatic or air separation is now used to clean coal. These terms are so used in this paper. Too much time or money can hardly be spent on "feed surveys') to get a "picture" of the coal that is to be cleaned. There have been too many "rule of thumb" methods used. Screen analyses and "sink-and-float" tests on the raw coal enable the coal operator and washery man to predict within reasonable limits the results that may be expected from any efficient cleaning apparatus. The sizes to be examined to get the picture are optional to the investigator. In modern wet washing, the range is from 4 to 0 in. Hand-picking on properly constructed belts is perhaps the standard for cleaning above these sizes. A good picture of the coal may be obtained by the following screen analysis: 3½ to 1¼ in. 1¼ to 3½ in. ½ to 5/16 in. 5/16 in. to 14 mesh 14 to 28 mesh 28 to 48 mesh and for very complete data on the fines: 48 to 100 mesh 100 to 200 mesh and through 200 mesh
