Measurements made with starch ~~~~s indicate that the Presence of starch serves to depress the streaming potential of a clay mud system. Measurements with pure starch slurries show that the addition of NaCl or CaO reduces the streaming potential significantly. The addition of NaOH, however, causes only a minor reduction in potential even when there are large changes in mud resistivity. INTRODUCTION In their excellent study of the streaming potential, Hill and Anderson' proposed that the presence of conductive solids within the filter medium will reduce the generated potential. This theory was demonstrated with measurements on shaly sandstone cores having various "b" factors; the cores with the higher negative b factors showed markedly lower potentials. (The factor b was originally defined by Hill and Milburn2 in an expression relating the resistivity of a shaly sandstone to the resistivity of the interstitial water: log F, = log F,, + b (log 100R,)'. 'he factor b, therefore, is a measure of the contribution of the conductive solids to the total conductivity of the sample. It has been found experimentally to be directly related to the amount of chemically exchangeable ion per unit pore volume.) In the logical extension of this hypothesis to the streaming potential created by filtration through mud cakes, they suggested that the presence of nonconductive starch in a drilling mud would have the opposite effect; i.e., it would cause the streaming POtential to be increased. The high streaming potentials that they observed with lime muds were attributed to this cause. A cross-plot of some of their results which are relevant to this discussion is given in Fig. 1. The lime-mud curves and untreated-mud curve are taken from curves given in their paper. The gyp-mud line was estimated from their statement that the measured streaming potential for gyp muds in the range of 1.5 to 2.0 ohm-m was approximately 18 mv/1,000 psi. These gyp-mud potentials were the lowest that they reported for any of the bentonitic-clay muds, and were the only ones which were less than the untreated-mud potentials. This very low streaming potential of gyp muds has also been observed in field studies.' By way of comparison, a U. of Texas publication4 gives the approxi-ate compositions for lime and gyp muds shown in Table 1. These materials are added to a bentonitic-clay mud base. It can be seen that both of these muds contain significant amounts of calcium salts and that the gyp mud has the higher concentration of starch. It would appear from this and from the data shown in Fig. 1 that starch may well be the cause of a streaming-potential reduction, rather than a potential increase. EXPERIMENTAL A series of streaming-potential experiments has been performed using a cell of a design similar to that reported by Wyllie.5 Calomel electrodes were used in both the mud slurry and the filtrate. Pressure in the cell was generated with high-pressure nitrogen. The primary objective of the investigation was to determine the effect of starch on the potential. Five different slurries were made which ranged in composition from untreated ben-tonitic mud (Baroid Aquagel) to a pure starch suspension (Baroid Im-permex). The intermediate slurries were prepared by mixing together a 9-lb/bbl clay mud with a 12-lb/bbl starch suspension in the ratios 1:3, 1:1 and 3:1. When starch was used alone, it was necessary to use an 18-Ib/bbl mixture, since leaner mixtures would not form a suitable filter cake. The clay mud used in the experiments was aged for three months before use. In addition to this series of measurements on the starch-clay mud mixtures, other experiments were performed to determine the effect on the potential of the absolute starch and Aquagel concentration, and the effect of adding various chemicals. The vaporization characteristics of carbon dioxide in a League City natural gas - Billings crude oil system were studied at three temperatures, 38°. 120°, and 202°F and for pressures ranging from 600 to 8,500 psi. Variation of carbon dioxide concentration up to 12 mole per cent in the composite showed no effect on the equilibrium vaporization ratios (K values) of the hydrocarbon constituents or on the K value of carbon dioxide itself. It was shown that carbon dioxide is more soluble in crudes than in distillates which is contrary to the behavior of methane. A working chart of carbon dioxide K values is presented. INTRODUCTION The study of the equilibrium vaporization ratios of mixtures of paraffin hydrocarbons has been rather thorough.2,6,7,8,9 In the past few years considerable attention has been paid to the vaporization characteristics of the so-called noncondensable gases such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide in mixtures of hydrocarbons. since they usually occur to some extent in most crude oils and natural gases.1,3,4,5 Knowledge of this behavior is useful to both the production and refining phases of the petroleum industry. This paper reports the equilibrium vaporization ratios (K's) of carbon dioxide in a mixture of League City natural gas and Billings crude oil, and compares them to those obtained in a natural gas-distillate system. The equilibrium vaporization ratios for the hydrocarbon components in this system had previously been studied by Roland.' In addition to the determination of the K values for carbon dioxide, the K values for methane and ethane were also determined in order to observe what effect, if any, the presence of carbon dioxide had on these K values. The concentration of carbon dioxide was also varied in order to observe the effect of this variable on the carbon dioxide K values. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The apparatus used in this study cotlsisted of a stainless steel equilibrium cell of about 2 liters capacity. The cell was mounted on trunions permitting rocking in a thermostatically controlled oil bath. Two high pressure valves fitted with steel tubing were mounted on the top of the cell. one was used for sampling the equilibrium gas phase and the other for sampling the equilibrium liquid phase by means of an induction tube within the cell. Stainless steel tubing from the bottom of the cell led to a mercury reservoir and manifold which was connected to a free-piston type pressure gauge manufac- lured by the American Instrunlent Ctr. and to a volumetric. putrip. The temperature of the oil bath was measured by means of a ralibrated mercury-in-glass thermometer. The recorded temperatures are believed to be accurate to ±0.5 °F. The pressures are correct to 22 psi. The crude oil used in this study was stock tank oil obtained from the Wilcox formation in the Billings Field, Noble County. Okla. The natural gas was obtained from the League City Field. Galveston County, Tex. The oil was treated with anhydrous calcium sulfate in order to remove the last traces of water. To insure a supply of constant composition gas at room temperature the cylinders of League City gas were cooled to about 30°F, inverted, and the condensed liquid was allowed to drain from the cylinders. The analysis of the gas and crude are tabulated in Table I. The carbon dioxide came from Pure Carbonic, Inc., and was .stated to have a purity of 99.5 per cent or better. The procedure used to obtain samples of the equilibrium liquid and vapor was similar to that employed by others making use of the rocking type equilibrium cell.6,7,8 The equilibrium cell was evacuated and calculated quantities of carbon dioxide, natural gas, and crude oil were charged to the cell to the desired pressure. In charging the equilibrium cell an attempt was made to maintain the ratio of the natural gas to crude oil as close as possible to that employed by Roland. After the cell was charged, samples of

The resistivity anomaly known as the K state was studied in Ni-Mo alloys containing 10.5 and 14.0 at. pct Mo. Both these alloys exhibit a large K effect which depends on the mechanical and thermal treatment. On the basis of X-ray diffuse scattering studies which were correlated with resistivity measurements, it appears that the K state in dilute Ni-Mo alloys can be associated with changes in the degree of short-range order within the a phase. An interesting phenomenon that has received much attention in recent years is the K state. The K state is marked by anomalous changes in some of the physical properties of certain alloys without the occurrence of observable microscopic structural changes. One of the early pieces of work in this area was by Thomas' who studied alloys of Ni-Cr, Ni-Cu, Ni-Cu-Zn, Fe-A1, Fe-Si, and Ni-A1. Upon annealing specimens which had been previously cold-worked or quenched from an elevated temperature he found an anomalous increase in resistivity over a certain temperature range. He also found that specimens which had been appropriately annealed to develop the K state showed a decrease in resistivity upon subsequent cold working. These effects are opposite to those found in normal alloys. Although the resistivity anomaly has been rather arbitrarily taken as the "definition" of the K state, there are several other interesting effects which accompany the resistivity increase. In Ni-Cr alloys,2, 3 for example, it was found that the hardness increases with increasing resistivity. It was also found that specimens which have been treated to develop the K state can be cold-worked for as much as an 80 pct reduction of area without an increase in the hardness. In Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys4 the K state is accompanied by an increase in flow stress and by a lattice contraction. In Ni-A1 alloys,5 specimens which have been treated to develop the K state also show an increase in elastic modulus. In Ag-Pd alloys6 the increased resistivity observed on annealing a cold-worked specimen is accompanied by an increase in the thermoelectric power and an increase in the Hall coefficient. The explanations of the K state phenomena are varied and depend upon the particular alloy in question. Several theories have been advanced to explain the increased conductivity with cold work on the basis of changes in the electronic configuration of the alloy as a result of local lattice distortions.7"9 Most investigators, however, believe that some type of local order in the solid solution, either short-range order (SRO) or clustering, is responsible for this effect. Theories concerning the relationship between ordering and the K state have for the most part been speculative, since there is little direct X-ray evidence that can be correlated with the above property changes. Much of the previous work on the K state was done in the Ni-Cr system where the small difference in the X-ray atomic scattering factors of the components nickel and chromium makes it very difficult to use X-ray diffuse-scattering measurements to determine the role of local order. In the Ni-A1 system, however, Starke et al.10 succeeded in detecting a connection between local order and the K state. It was found that a small but measurable K effect correlated with increasing SRO in the nickel-rich a phase. The manner in which local order might increase the resistivity of K state alloys is not completely clear. Since most of the known K state alloys contain at least one transition element, significance has frequently been attached to the presence of an unfilled d shell. It has been suggested that during the formation of the K state the number of conduction electrons decreases as a result of the transfer of s electrons to the d shell where they are more tightly bound.1'11'12 Koster and Rocholl13 have proposed that SRO can cause an increase in resistivity for alloy systems in which the number and mobility of charge carriers are reduced when the percent solute is increased. According to this hypothesis, the local environment of a given solvent atom changes in the same manner with increasing percent solute as it does with an increasing degree of SRO; hence the change in physical properties should tend in the same direction. In this hypothesis, SRO is considered only in a statistical sense, and the increased resistivity of the K state is attributed to a change in the mean distribution of electrons and holes in the s and d states as a result of SRO. From the work of Chen and Nicholson on Ag-Pd alloys,6 it appears that the K state can occur in systems for which the d shell is completely filled. These investigators explained the increased resistivity by picturing the SRO as small domains of some form of long-range order (LRO). According to ~ibson,'~ the number of effective electrons can be reduced by the creation of a new Brillouin zone boundary near the Fermi surface of an alloy as a result of the changing crystallographic symmetry that accompanies the formation of a superlattice. This idea may be expressed in terms of the superzone concept.15 In the present work the role of local order in the formation of the K state in Ni-Mo alloys was investigated. The principal tools used in this study were X-ray diffuse scattering and electrical resistivity measurements; however, these data were supplemented by electron microscopic and field-ion microscopic data. The purpose of the work was to determine whether or not the K state in Ni-Mo alloys can indeed be attributed to the formation of SRO as has been proposed by previous investigators.

Just what is happening in the preparation and mineral separation stages are questions frequently asked about most processing plants. It is unusual to find the answers readily available in the operating metallurgical data. Knowledge is nominally available from metallurgical balances about the head ore grade, grade and recovery of the concentrates, and the plant tailings. However, the mechanisms which control grade recovery and losses are seldom monitored in such a way as to permit specific analysis: Thus, when questions about the effectiveness of the process are asked, the answers are based frequently upon intuitive professional judgments and local expertise. Detailed investigations of process functions are extensive in terms of manpower, time, and interference with production. An investigation method in which process operating conditions could be provided in a cost effective manner would assist in local process assessment and control. Such a collection of process operating data is defined as a process audit and the development of the necessary techniques forms the subject of this paper. A typical application to a lead-zinc concentrator highlights both the manner of implementing a process and the plant data made available for local use.

THE desulphurization of molten iron and steel is a very complicated process. One way to arrive at a better understanding of this process is to break it down into several simpler chemical processes that can be studied individually in the laboratory. For a study of the different factors that influence the equilibrium distribution of sulphur between liquid metals and slags, several simpler equilibria may be investigated. One very important subject is the determination of the escaping tendency of sulphur in the liquid metal and its dependency on temperature and composition of the melt. Several papers in this field have recently been published.', ' Another subject is the study of the sulphur capacity of the slag. A molten slag is indeed complex, and even if sulphur distribution data for a large variety of molten slags may give empirical data about their desulphurizing power, the importance of the individual components is still not quite clear. It is accepted generally that lime is the most important desulphurizing component in the slag. The present investigation has as its purpose to study the desulphurizing power of lime in its standard state, and to provide a basis for thermodynamic calculations of the desulphurizing power of various lime-containing slags. The standard state of lime at steelmaking temperatures is solid calcium oxide, CaO. It can react with sulphur to form solid calcium sulphide, CaS. The relative stability of calcium oxide and calcium sulphide is expressed by the free energy of the reaction: 2Ca0 (s) + S1 (g) = 2CaS (s) + O2 (g) The existing free energy data for this reaction, listed by Kelley5 nd Osborn,' are uncertain to about 10 kcal and are of limited value for a calculation of equilibrium constants. Under the conditions prevailing in a melting furnace, the sulphur pressure may be expressed conveniently by the ratio H,S/H2 and the oxygen pressure by the ratio H,O/H, (or CO,/CO). The desulphurizing power of calcium oxide may, therefore, be studied by the reaction CaO + HIS = CaS + H2O. A study of this reaction may be complicated by certain side reactions: Water vapor and hydrogen sulphide may react. to form sulphur dioxide, and calcium sulphide may be oxidized to calcium sulphate. A thermodynamic calculation shows that these side reactions will be suppressed to insignificance if the equilibrium is studied in the presence of an excess of hydrogen. The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1. About 10 g calcium oxide and 20 g calcium sulphide (laboratory qualities) were intimately mixed, and some water was added to make a thick paste. The paste was put into a thimble of zirconium silicate, which was placed within the constant temperature zone of a furnace, and capillary refractory tubes were attached in both ends. After the mixture had been heated in dry hydrogen at 1000°C for several hours all Ca(OH), and CaCO, had decomposed and CaSO, was reduced, so only CaO and CaS remained in the thimble forming a porous plug. The mixture was examined by X-ray diffraction after the initial reduction in dry hydrogen as well as after the subsequent experimental runs up to 1425 °C. It was shown that crystalline calcium oxide and calcium sulphide were always present together in about equal amounts. The unit cell edges were found to be 4.80A for CaO and 5.68A for CaS in good agreement with existing literature values." This shows that the mutual solid solubility is very small, and that the compounds are present in their standard states. Purified hydrogen was passed through water sat-urators kept at constant temperature in a thermostat bath. The amount of water vapor saturation was checked by means of a dew point method, not shown on Fig. 1. The gas mixture was passed through the capillary inlet into the furnace, where it was sifted through the porous plug of calcium oxide and calcium sulphide. The hydrogen sulphide present in the outgoing gas was absorbed in a zinc acetate solution and the hydrogen was collected over water. When one liter of hydrogen had been collected, the amount of hydrogen sulphide was determined by iodometric titration. As one molecule of H,O is used for the formation of each molecule of H,S, the equilibrium ratio H,S/H,O would be , where (H,O) is the molar concentration in the ingoing gas, and (H,S) the molar concentration in the outgoing gas. In the present work (H,S) was always very small compared to (H20). In order for the observed H,S/H20 ratio to represent the true equilibrium ratio the gas flow has to be: 1—Sufficiently slow to give a complete establishment of equilibrium, and 2—sufficiently fast to counteract thermal diffusion. Incomplete reaction would give a value decreasing with increasing flow rate, and thermal diffusion would give a value increasing with decreasing flow rate. When inlet and outlet tubes of about 2 sq mm cross-section were used, the observed gas ratio was independent of the flow rate between 15 and 125 cc per min, Fig. 2. The following analysis was stimulated by a previous article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev., which describes a method using formulas especially devised to calculate flow potential of extensive aquifers characterized by relatively even porosity and permeability throughout. The present discussion submits that the method was unsuitable for solving the kind of problem occurring at Eureka, where the amount of water available, rather than the flow potential, may have been the vital factor. IN an interesting article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev.,1 W. T. Stuart describes how a difficult water problem, or one phase of it, may be evaluated by means of a small scale test. Test data are plotted by a method rendering, under certain conditions, a straight-line graph that can be projected to show how much the water table will be lowered by pumping at any specified rate for a given time. A formula is then used to determine the size of opening, or extent of workings, necessary to provide sufficient inflow to enable pumping to be maintained at that rate. At first glance this might seem the answer to a miner's prayer, but a word of caution is in order. It may not be the whole answer. Moreover, results obtained by the method described are reliable only for conditions approximating those assumed. Even where conditions do not meet this requirement, however, it may be possible to draw helpful inferences from the results, perhaps enough to facilitate another approach to evaluation of a problem. The two formulas Mr. Stuart used, the Theis formula and the one developed from it by Cooper and Jacob, were given field checks a number of years ago in valley alluvials by the Water Supply Div. of the U. S. Geological Survey and found to be reliable when the aquifer is very large in horizontal extent and sufficiently isotropic for the test well and observation wells to be in material of the same average permeability as the saturated part of the aquifer as a whole." Extensive valley alluvials, sands, and gravels can be evaluated in this way, and there are even cases in which the method could apply to porous limestones, such as flat beds of very large areal extent that have been submerged below the water table after extensive weathering. These are sometimes prolific sources of water for towns and industries. It is necessary for them to have been above the water table for some geologically long period of time in a fairly humid climate before submergence because the necessary high porosity and permeability, and large reservoir capacity, are the result of weathering, that is, of solution by the carbonic acid (H,CO3) in rainwater formed by the absorption of CO, from the air by raindrops, and this dissolving action must cease when all the H2CO3 has been consumed by re- action with the carbonate to form the more soluble bicarbonate. Consequently this weathering process is largely restricted to a zone that does not extend much below the water level, and submergence is necessary after the weathering to provide large reservoir capacity and good hydraulic continuity. On the other hand, water courses tend to form along faults and fractures in limestone, and to become enlarged by solution, well below water level when, as often happens, fresh meteoric water is circulated rapidly through them to considerable depth by hydrostatic pressure, as through an inverted syphon. Although the reservoir capacity of such water courses is relatively small they may extend far enough to tap more prolific sources. Cavities, and sometimes caves of considerable size, are found in limestones where the acid formed by the oxidation of sulphides has attacked them. This action can take place as deep below water level as surface water is carried by syphonic or artesian circulation, because the oxygen it carries in solution will not be consumed until it reacts with some reducing agent, such as a sulphide. Moreover, the formation of acid and solution of limestone in this way is not confined to the immediate vicinity of the sulphide. Oxidation of pyrite, for example, results in formation of acid in several successive stages, each taking place as more oxygen becomes available, as by the accession of fresh water into the circulation at some place beyond the sulphides. When the acid thus formed attacks the limestone, CO, is liberated and the ultimate effect of the complete oxidation of one unit of pyrite will be the removal of six times its volume of limestone as the sulphate and bicarbonate, both of which are relatively soluble. The reaction may be continued or renewed along a water course far from the site of the sulphides, where the small electric potential produced by contact with the limestone helped to start the reaction. Mr. Stuart refers2 0 caves in the old mining area in the block of Eldorado limestone southwest of the Ruby Hill fault at Eureka, Nev., and to the cavities encountered in drillholes in the downthrown block on the other side of the fault. Although he interprets these cavities as evidence that this formation was sufficiently isotropic (evenly porous and permeable) to give reliable results by the method he describes, they may, in fact, be entirely local conditions. THE rate of flotation of solid particles determines the percentage recovery of these particles which can be obtained during a given time interval. It is an established fact that the recovery is greatest in the fine sand size range and falls off on either side of this size range. It is also a fact that the history of the development of concentrating devices has been marked by a desire to recover the small particles: tables were developed to treat material too fine to recover in jigs; flotation recovers material too fine to be recovered on tables. As our ores become more complex and require finer grinding, a greater proportion is in the slow-floating size range. It is therefore of economic importance that the effect of size of particle upon rate of flotation be studied. Many studies have been made along this line. The present investigation attempts to quantify the rate of flotation by means of a rate equation, and then compares the effect of size upon the rate of flotation. It was found that the flotation rate constant increases with increase in diameter of particle in the size range smaller than the optimum size particle. The flotation rate constant decreases with an increase in diameter of particle in the size range coarser than the optimum size particle. This suggested two different actions taking place, and these are discussed. Suggestions for further work in order to improve the flotation rate of both fine and coarse particles are made. The usual method of expressing rate is to plot cumulative percent recovery vs time. If we knew the equation of this kind of curve we could replot it as a straight line, and the slope of the line would be an index of the magnitude of the flotation rate. It is easier to compare straight lines than curves. The basis used for obtaining the equation of the recovery vs time curve is the law of mass action. This law states that the "rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the `active masses' of the reacting substances present at any given time." This, of course, implies a constant temperature. We can modify this for our use by using the term flotation reaction instead of chemical reaction and the term floatable particle instead of active masses. [ ] where C denotes concentration of particles, t denotes time, k denotes a proportionality constant. If the exponent of C is 1, then we have a first order rate reaction. If the exponent of C is 2, then we have a second order rate reaction. For a first order rate reaction, we obtain, after integration, [ ] where k is again a proportionality constant and has the dimension of the reciprocal of time. C, is the original concentration or weight or percentage of floatable particles. C, is the concentration or weight or percentage of floatable particles remaining in the flotation cell after time t. If all particles of the mineral to be floated were capable of floating we could take C, as 100 and C, would be 100 - R, where R is the cumulative percentage recovery of mineral at time t. But it is not usual for all of the particles to be capable of floating, because of surface oxidation, etc. Therefore, we must introduce a factor x which is the percentage of unfloatable mineral. Hence the first order equation is [ ] It has been proposed by various workers1-3 that this equation describes the flotation rate. More recently N. Arbiter4 states that a second order rate equation fits the recovery vs time curve more closely than does a first order rate equation. Morris' has discussed the evidence presented for this statement. Small-angle tilt boundaries have been observed in a lamellar eutectic structure. These boundaries are morphologically similar to a theoretical till boundary originally proposed by Burgers. The production of a small-angle tilt boundary in the lamellar eutectic structure is attributed to the formation of an indentation on a planar solid-liquid interface during growth. Constitutional supercooling due to the accumulation of impurity atoms ahead of the interface is primarily responsible for the generation of an indentation. The distance between two faults of like sign, designated as lamellar fault distance, is calculated by the Burgers equation for small-angle boundaries. It was found that the lamellar fault distance decreases exponentially and the tilt angle increases exponentially with freezing rate. SMALL-ANGLE tilt boundaries have been observed in many crystals in the as-grown states by etching techniques. However, a detailed substantial proof for revealing the presence of dislocations in the form of etch-pits was recently accomplished by Vogel. These boundaries are described as an array of dislocations of like sign. The angle of tilt associated with a boundary is treated theoretically by Burgers3 and is given by 0 = b/D for small tilt-angle where b is the Burgers vector of the dislocations and D is their average spacing. During the course of experimentation on the solidi fication of the lamellar Mg-32 wt pct Al eutectic a microstructure which was strikingly similar to a dislocation tilt boundary was observed. An example of the type of microstructure is given in Fig. 1, which shows a combination of transverse and top sections of the lamellar eutectic structure. The lamellae of the top section on one side of the apparent tilt angle are not parallel with those on the other side. Consequently, some lamellae must be terminated somewhere. Fig. 1 shows that the termination of lamellae is analogous to a dislocation tilt boundary in a crystal lattice originally proposed by Burgers. This work represents a closer look at such structures. The factors governing the production of the small-angle tilt boundary are discussed in terms of the freezing condition and impurity distribution in the melt. The effect of freezing rate on the distance between two faults, designated as lamellar fault distance, and the tilt angle is also described. In addition, the lamellar fault distance is determined by means of the Burgers equation for small-angle tilt boundary. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The slightly impure Mg-32 wt pct Al eutectic rods, 5/8 in. in diam and 12 in. long, were made from 99.99 wt pct Al and 99.98 wt pct Mg and were cast in a high-purity graphite mold. Some of these rods were purified by zone-refining the eutectic using direct-radiation helical-coil furnaces5 A molten zone about 2 in. long was passed through the cast rods at a speed of 5.3 x 104 cm per sec for ten passes of the molten zone. Before the freezing experiment was begun, 2-1/2 in. of the material from the head and tail ends of the zone-refined eutectic were removed from the rod to eliminate any impurity. The freezing experiments were carried out under controlled conditions,8 using a protective atmosphere of purified argon. At the end of each run, observation of the tilt boundary was made throughout the entire length of the rod with a light microscope on the top, longitudinal, and transverse sections (three mutually perpendicular sections) of the lamellar eutectic solid. The Elliot Lake uranium deposits are contained in a pebble conglomerate which is similar throughout the basin. This paper compares the solid-liquid separation circuits of two nominal 3000 T/d acid leach uranium concentrates treating Elliot Lake ore. One concentrator employed rotary vacuum drum filtration for solids removal and washing, the .other used counter current decantation in torque arm thickeners. Capital and operating costs, operation and maintenance, and metallurgical performance of the two solution recovery methods are compared and contrasted. A recent development, removal of the sand fraction ahead of C.C.D. and separate sand washing in hydraulic cyclones, is also discussed.

Selective desliming holds much promise for upgrading low-grade, finely disseminated iron ores that are not readily amenable to conventional flotation. The process is extremely sensitive to the presence of calcium and magnesium ions that are in process water or are released by constituent minerals. The effects of these two alkaline earth ions on quartz were compared through streaming potential measurements, flocculation and cationic flotation tests, abstraction tests and scanning electron microscope studies. Calcium ion, adsorbed as CaOH+, and magnesium ion, attached by heterocoagulation as Mg(OH)2 precipitate, were responsible for the flocculation of quartz suspension and for the depression in cationic flotation of silica in alkaline pulp solutions. Magnesium hydroxide coating could be removed, similarly to adsorbed calcium ion, by complexation with EDTA and polyphosphates.

I. INTRODUCTION We are aware that as a general rule zinc and lead deposits located by the Mediterranean Sea contain important proportions of oxidized ores of lead and zinc (cerussite, anglesite, smithsonite, hemimorphite). Although their economical significance is decreasing in favor of totally sulphurous ores*, la Societe Miniere et Metallurgique de Penarroya and its subsidiaries are still operating four small oxidized ore-bodies in Morocco, Spain, France, and Italy (see Figure 1). Not all of these deposits contain exclusively oxidized lead and zinc ores but also sulphides such as galena, sphalerite, and pyrite. However, the very presence of the oxidized ores gives the treatment methods their characteristics and it is bearing this in mind that we think the description of these four mills worthwhile. Flotation remains the basic process. It uses sulphurization in alkaline medium and long chain xanthate in order to concentrate lead minerals (amylxanthate) and fatty amines (sterarylamine acetate) to concentrate zinc minerals.

The importance of the Widmanstätten structure to structure theory in metallography has been recognized by many writers.l It is a structure produced by the precipitation of a, new phase from a solid solution upon cooling as a result of changing solid solubility, and displays a characteristic appearance indicating a crystallographic relationship between the new phase and the original solid solution (Fig. 1). First discovered in 1808 by Alois de Widmanstätten2, the structure has been traced by analogy through many alloy systems. Particularly is this true of the steels. Sorby's classic work3 on the microstructure of iron and steel was in essence an attempt to explain the origin of this characteristic structure in meteoric iron. Manganese-ore has been found upon the Isthmus of Panama throughout' a region of nearly three hundred square miles, over the greater part of which, however, it is known only in small bodies without commercial value. Only six mines, controlled by two companies, have actually shipped ore, although a large area has been taken up in miningelaims. The ore-bearing region extends along the coast of the Carib. bean Sea, beginning on the west near Puerto Bello and extending easterly about 35 miles toward Point San Blas. The energies of formation of ordered and disordered solid solutions of composition CusAu and the energy of ordering in this alloy were determined by tin solution calorimetry. The degree of order was measured by X-ray diffraction and electrical resistance and microhardness measurements were made on ordered and disordered specimens. AMONG the phenomena associated with the order-disorder transformation of a solid solution, the change in internal energy is of special interest because of the part it plays in the various theories of ordering. Published values for the decrease in internal energy accompanying the formation of a superlattice from a disordered solid solution of composition CuAu range from —370 to —2260 cal per gram-atom. Some of these values represent calculations based on theory and others are the results of experimental measurements. The distinction between the change in internal energy, AE, and the change in enthalpy, AH, can here be neglected, because they are approximately equal for solid-state reactions at normal pressure. An analysis of ordering by Bragg and Williams' predicts an energy change of —605 cal per gram-atom for the formation of a superlattice in the alloy Cuau from a completely random solution. Peierls" application to Cuau of Bethe'sb earest-neighbor theory yields —560 cal per gram-atom for the formation of a superlattice from a matrix which initially contains short-range order. Cowley' extended the nearest-neighbor approach to include as many as five shells of neighbors; on this basis a change in energy of —500 cal per gram-atom is expected. Eguchi," using a quantum-mechanical treatment, calculated a value of —2260 cal per gram-atom for the difference in the energy of completely disordered and completely ordered Cu,Au. Sykes and Jones- eated a completely ordered alloy and measured its heat capacity as a function of temperature. This measured heat capacity agrees closely with the corresponding value found by the Kopp-Neumann (or mixture) rule up to about 250°C and above this temperature exceeds it, especially near the critical temperature for ordering. The difference between the integrals with respect to temperature of the observed and the Kopp-Neumann heat capacities was considered to be the energy of ordering. By this method Sykes and Jones found a value of —530 cal per gram-atom. This value is not adjusted for the short-range order remaining above the critical temperature. The pres- ence of such short-range order is suggested by the difference between the measured heat capacity and the extrapolated Kopp-Neumann heat capacity immediately above the critical temperature. Values reported by Weibke and von Quadt' and by Hirabayashi, Nagasaki, and Maniwaa were obtained in the course of investigations primarily aimed at other objectives. Weibke and von Quadt measured the temperature coefficient of the electromotive force of a Cu-CuAu cell. They obtained a value of —1010 cal per gram-atom for the heat of formation of the alloy at 500°C, at which temperature there is no long-range order. They also obtained —1380 cal per gram-atom as the heat of formation of the ordered alloy at 370°C. Considering the heat of formation of the disordered alloy to be independent of temperature, they estimated the energy of ordering at 370°C as —370 cal per gram-atom. At this temperature long-range order is incomplete and the degree of order changes rapidly with temperature. Hirabayashi, Nagasaki, and Maniwa," using an annealing calorimeter, investigated an alloy containing 23.4 rather than 25.0 atomic pct Au and thus could not obtain complete order. Thelr value of the energy of ordering was —490 cal per gram-atom. Orianis has recently investigated the Au-Cu system by the galvanic emf technique. He reports values for the heats of formation of Cu-Au alloys, from which the heat of formation at 427 OC of an alloy of composition CuAu may be found by interpolation. This value is —1080 cal per gram-atom. In the work here reported, disordered and ordered alloys of composition CuAu and corresponding mixtures of gold and copper were dissolved in liquid tin and the heat effects measured. These heat effects are small, since the dissolution of gold in tin is exothermic and the dissolution of copper is endothermic. The method, therefore, yields fairly precise values of the heats of formation of disordered and ordered alloys and of the energy of ordering. Experimental Procedure The calorimeter consisted of a long-necked Dewar flask immersed in a constant temperature salt bath and has been described by Ticknor and Bever." The chief changes in this equipment were an improvement in vacuum and the replacement of the mercury thermoregulator by a resistance thermometer control circuit. The solvent, which was maintained at a constant temperature near 350°C, consisted of 500 grams of 99.99 pct pure tin. NATURE has provided us with many metals, but with few really good ones, and frequently the better metals are the rarer. It is to this circumstance that many physical metallurgists, inventors, and just plain experimenters owe their employment, for much of their work is directed, consciously or otherwise, toward the alleviation of some of the more serious shortcomings of the cheaper, less noble, and weaker metals; by alloying, age-hardening, passivating, cladding, plating, and other useful dodges, which sometimes permit the substitution of one of the less gifted metals for one of the really good ones. As a matter of fact, the varied needs of our complex civilization could be quite well met with only five metals, if they were sufficiently abundant, and one of the five would certainly be platinum, the most noble and versatile that nature provides. Many metals are difficult to handle and seem to take pleasure in defying their investigators to find good uses for them, and finally when a use is found it is frequently quite a specific one; in other words, a hole has to be found--or perhaps made-to fit the peg. It is for this reason that a large amount of research must be con- ducted before the more recalcitrant metals become really useful. In platinum, however, we have a metal that inherently possesses so many valuable attributes that it became useful as soon as methods for producing it in massive ductile form were devised, and once its complicated chemical behavior was understood it became principally an aid to research rather than the subject thereof.
