The chronicle of the oil industry in Oklahoma in 1939 is one of declining production bolstered by strenuous efforts to find new pools or new producing horizons in the older, highly exploited, relatively shallow areas. Production, which averaged 608,000 bbl. daily in 1937, the post-depression peak, declined to 463,000 bbl. daily in 1938 and continued downward to 421,000 bbl. daily for the year 1939. While the state could produce somewhat more oil if demand warranted it, production in most areas is at as great a rate as could be justified on the basis of maximum efficient operation. Outlet for Oklahoma crude has been seriously affected by the increase in production in the Illinois Basin. Crude movements from the Kansas-Oklahoma area to the northeastern consuming centers averaged 314,000 bbl. daily in 1939 as compared with 397,000 bbl. in 1938. Oklahoma producers bore the brunt of this loss of market. The general production decline was accentuated by the August, shutdown of 15 days, precipitated by the action of a major crude purchaser posting a 20-cent reduction in the price of crude. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission, in collaboration with other members of the Interstate Oil Compact Commission, ordered a complete shutdown of all producing wells in order to prevent the premature abandonment of stripper wells, which might result from a prolonged period of production at prices below operating costs. The reduction in price was forestalled, most major purchasers failing to meet the cut in view of the shutdown, and the company initiating the move rescinded its action. Fear of the shutting in of oil wells, especially those making considerable quantities of water, is generally unfounded in the light of a superficial examination of the records. Oklahoma's unprorated pools, which produced 154,000 bbl. daily in May, declined to 152,000 bbl. in June and 143,000 bbl. in July. Immediately following the shutdown, the same pools produced 150,000 bbl. in September, 145,000 in October, and 145,-000 in November. Thus, while the half month's production loss in August has not been made up, the wells apparently hare produced at a greater rate since the shutdown than immediately preceding it.

Although the problem of well spacing is one of the most important involved in the production of oil, it must be considered at the present time as still subject to further development. The published literature on this question is so voluminous that we cannot enter here into a review of it, except to refer to the recent papers by L. L. Foleyl and E. A. Stephen-son,2 where other references are cited. However, a decisive and conclusive answer to the problem of well spacing in any general form does not seem to have been developed. And while we shall be unable to present the desired solution in the present paper, it is nevertheless felt that the material to be given here not only provides the physical ground work for the ultimate solution, but shows qualitatively the essential factors that enter the well-spacing problem. Field studies of the well-spacing problem, in which the ultimate recoveries from different fields with different well spacings have been compared, have generally suffered from the lack of knowledge as to the similarity of the inherent characteristics of the producing reservoirs being compared, such as the sand volumes, the sand porosities, the sand permeabilities, the original reservoir pressures, the presence or absence of gas caps, the presence or absence of effective water drives, and the economic limits of production rates at which the various fields were considered to have yielded their ultimate recoveries. Certainly no one who is evaluating originally the economic significance of any oil reservoir would deliberately ignore these phases of the problem. And it is equally certain that no one would reasonably expect the ultimate recoveries from two reservoirs, even with the same well spacing, to be identical regardless of these other factors. More reliable results might be expected from comparisons of the recoveries obtained from different leases with different well spacings, but producing from the same reservoir sand. Unfortunately, however, even conclusions for such studies may be subject to serious errors. The reason simply is that however much one may insist that an operator is entitled only to the oil immediately underneath his surface acreage he will nevertheless drain the surrounding properties as long as his reservoir

The Research Division of The New Jersey Zinc Company (of Pa.) has conducted, over a period of years, numerous tests of the reducibility of various zinc ores and the reactivity of various kinds of coal, using a number of different experimental methods. Most of these tests have involved the reduction of mixtures of ore and coal. In such cases the following simultaneous reactions are believed to be mainly responsible for the production of zinc, as was shown by Bodenstein1 some years ago: ZnO+ CO = Zn + CO2 [1] C + CO2 = 2 CO [2] Each of these reactions is dependent upon the other for the supply of CO and CO2 , respectively, and the over-all rate of formation of zinc vapor will be determined by the slower of these two reactions. An analogous pair of reactions sometimes of importance is: ZnO + H2 = Zn + H2 O [31 C + H2O = CO + Ha [4] While it is possible to obtain an indication of the relative reducibility of various ores, or of a fine versus a coarse ore, by testing them with a given coal, and while coal reactivities may be measured in a corresponding manner, a more direct determination of relative reaction rates is possible by carrying out the desired reactions, such as I and 2, separately and under reproducible conditions. It is one purpose of this paper to present some of the results that have been obtained by the latter method. C. G. Maier2 discusses the relative rates of reactions I and 2 and concludes that while at relatively low temperatures reaction I is faster than reaction 2, this difference becomes less with increasing temperatures, although at smelting temperatures reaction I is still the faster. He also says (p. 48), "At temperatures . . . between IIOO° and I3oo°C., . . . the zinc oxide reduction reaction is intrinsically more rapid than its physical limitations; that is, it is limited by gas diffusion rates." In the course of numerous reactivity tests involving the separate use of reactions and I and 2, we have obtained data that show by direct experiment, we believe for the first time, the correctness of Maier's statements concerning these reactions. We also include data on the relative rate of reaction 3, involving reduction by hydrogen. Finally, some interesting results obtained by carrying out the reduction of a zinc ore-coal briquet in streaming atmospheres of nitrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, respectively, are presented. *

The organized curtailment of California oil production is not yet one year old but during its first year it has accomplished so much that it is now firmly established as an agency of economic efficiency. The principle of cooperative curtailment has been adopted by other states and it is safe to say that the principle will continue as long as the demand for petroleum is notably less than the potential production. It' is interesting to note that this same principle of regulating supply to meet demand is now being urged for other industries, such as agriculture and mining. Since Oct. 31, 1929, when curtailment was instituted by the oil producers of Santa Fe Springs and Long Beach in an effort to avert the disaster of ruinously low prices which confronted them, there has been a constant and increasingly effective curtailment program in California. Prior to that time a notable effort toward the restriction of oil production was made under the direction of F. C. Van Deinse during the early summer months of 1929. A considerable reduction of oil output was recorded as the result of this effort, but because of incomplete cooperation and the discovery of still deeper zones at Santa Fe Springs the effort was abandoned; flush field production became unrestrained and prices soon fell to low levels. This initial curtailment movement was educational and experimental. It showed all operators a way out of their overproduction difficulties and developed the principles followed in later curtailment efforts. Thus it was that only a few days after their oil had been reduced to 60 c. per barrel, the operators of Santa Fe Springs got together and agreed to restrict their current production of more than 270,000 bbl. daily to not more than 150,000 bbl. daily. The operators at Long Beach followed the same course a few clays later and agreed to limit their production to not more than 110,000 bbl. daily. The Santa Fe Springs operators chose H. P. Grimm as umpire and director of their proration program. Neal H. Anderson was chosen umpire for Long Beach. Sandberg, London, Eng. 1 think we should all be grateful to the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, and to their chemist, Dr. Dudley, for spending so much time and money in order to solve an important question; nor are me less indebted to the public spirit which leads them to impart tlie experience thus gained. In Europe nothing similar has hitherto been done, either by a company or by any private individual. In England the great railway companies employ their engineers in other ways, and do not keep a chemist or specialist to study rails; bat even if they did they would probably not publish the results. The chief professional engineers are so occupied with their private practice of railroad construction generally, that they cannot be expected to devote their time and energies to so special a question. The German Railway Union has, in my opinion, missed the real object of its elaborate researches by falling into the error of specifying costly, impracticable tests for rails—tests at the same time which do not infallibly expose the impurities that may be in the rails under examination. There has, therefore, been nothing done on this side of the Atlantic in the way of exhaustive study to determine the best composition for steel rails. America should consequently have full credit for the enlightened example which she has set. I wish, however, to make a few remarks on Dr. Dudley's second paper,—& paper which follows very much upan the same lines of argument as the first red three years ago, upon which I have previously touched in my pabr on the same subject read at the meeting in August last. If Dr. Dudley had discovered a new metal he could hardly, I think, have taken wore pains to prove that he was correct in his first formula for the best chemical colnposition of steel rails. But I hare seen so much done in the way of proof by experiment that I am inclined to think that almost anything can be proved by experiments and by satnples. If Dr. Dudley would only give up his formula, which would not suit any country—not even America—

Most papers on xanthate have dealt with principles rather than practice. On the assumption that many millmen are interested in knowing where and in what manner the xanthates are being used in mills other than their own, this paper will summarize the results of a recent survey of North American plants. A brief background story and a description of the xanthates will be followed with the results of that survey; then a few observations will be made on storage, feeding, and ore testing. The first xanthate was made in 1822 by Zeise of the University of Copenhagen. With commendable scientific detachment (or perhaps a bad cold) Zeise ignored a more pervading quality of the substance and named it for its color, after the Greek word "xanthos," meaning yellow. During the first 80 years of its recorded existence xanthate found use only in small quantity as an insecticide; after the turn of the century there was some further demand for it in the vulcanization of rubber. It was not until 1922, by coincidence the centennial of Zeise's discovery, that C. H. Keller of San Francisco, seeking sul-phidizing agents, recalled xanthate in connection with his experience years earlier when he had seen this material used in Europe to combat grape phylloxera. His successful tests with the new flotation reagent culminated in the basic xanthate patent (U. S. 1,554,216) in 1925. In the minds of many metallurgists the introduction of xanthate as a flotation reagent is identified with the beginnings of alkaline circuits, the first use of chemical collectors, and the beginning of selective flotation. Actually, these preceded xanthate by a number of years. The alkaline circuit in lead-zinc flotation was introduced by Lyster as early as 1912. In 1922 Sheridan and Griswold made their momentous discovery (Timber Butte) that alkali cyanides and zinc sulphate effectively inhibited the flotation of pyrite and sphalerite in pulps made alkaline with sodium carbonate or bicarbonate. The use of lime to retard pyrite in copper flotation began within two years after Ralston directed attention to its possibilities in 1917. These were the beginnings of modern selective flotation, which was practiced successfully on copper-iron ores at Nacozari in 1922, and at Inspiration, Cananea, and others only shortly afterward. In the lead-zinc mills, selective flotation was of even greater economic importance at that time. The Sunnyside plant of U. S. Smelting, Refining, and Mining Co. used the process earlier than 1920, and Consolidated, Timber Butte, and others soon followed. As a chemical collector xanthate was relatively a latecomer, for the Corliss patent of 1917 covered the first of these, alpha-naphthylamine, and the Perkins patent of 1919 the second, thiocarbanilid. THE pottery of the New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) is equipped to make three classes of refractories; namely, spelter vessels, spelter condensers; and high-grade fire-brick. The most important of these are the spelter vessels, on account of the extreme severity of the service which they must perform, necessitating great care in the selection of materials and in the whole process of manufacture. Next to the spelter vessels in importance? come the condensers, as large numbers are used in the manufacture of spelter, and improvements m quality result in material decreases in working cost. , While the fire-brick which form the laboratory, or high-temperature portion of the spelter furnaces, are placed at the foot of the list, they-are nevertheless of much importance, since high quality will decrease the frequency of the always expensive shutdowns for repairs. To promote simplicity, the manufacture of these three products will be described separately in this paper, except in so far as materials and the crushing and handling system common to all are concerned. Materials Bond Clay.-The bond clay used entirely at the Palmerton pottery is a St. Louis clay furnished by the Grand View Fire Clay Co. It is stored in a system of covered bins, and no attempt is made to weather -it in the, accepted sense of the term " weathering." Some years ago our clay was weathered before pugging, but we did not find the benefit sufficient to offset the additional handling and the loss. of clay incurred. Furthermore, we believe that the rotting of the pugged mix (described later), accomplishes the same results to better advantage. That there is some action taking place in the clay while stored in the covered bins, however, is, evidenced by an increase in volume which at times has caused damage to the retaining walls of the bins. We have at present a stock of bond clay weathering in the open, and when this is put into service an opportunity will be afforded for making comparisons-with the clay as usually handled.

INTRODUCTION The Optimum Production Rate (OPR) is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of a mineral deposit. The OPR can also be expressed as the Optimum Mine Life (OML) in years since the expected mine life is determined by dividing the OPR per year into the estimated ore reserves. Unfortunately, very little time and effort has been directed towards the determination of the OPR. Instead, "rules of thumb" are often applied to select a mine life without due consideration of the economic implications of such a selection. A "justification" for a particular production rate is often based on a pre-conceived arbitrary requirement for a mine life of 5, 10, or 15 years, for example. In this paper it is demonstrated that such arbitrary selections for high-grade/low-tonnage mines (such as many underground gold/silver deposits) often lead to sub-optimal results. In fact, an apparently uneconomic deposit at an arbitrary production rate may be economic at the OPR. Consequently, investment opportunities may be overlooked if one analyzes mine properties based on arbitrary production rates. This paper analyzes the interrelationships of variables such as production rates, capital and operating costs, cut-off grades, discount rates, metal prices, etc. The analysis shows that the OML for high-grade/low-tonnage deposits is often in the range of two to four years. Although such mine lives intuitively appear too short to many individuals, it should be noted that, in the past, much of the mining industry became familiar with the economics of large scale mining operations. The rules of thumb developed for such large scale operations should not be applied to high-grade/low-tonnage mines such as many of the underground gold deposits. DEFINITION OF OPTIMUM PRODUCTION RATE The OPR is selected on the basis of maximizing the net present value of the after-tax cash flows. However, as discussed later in this paper, the production rate selected for a particular mine may be somewhat higher or lower than the theoretical OPR as a result of other variables such as: 1) the probability or expectation of additional reserves being discovered 2) the likelihood of being able to custom mill nearby deposits owned by others 3) the configuration or attitude of the orebody, which may place upper limits on the production rate 4) the residual, or salvage values, of the mine/mill facilities COMPARISON BETWEEN DIFFERENT PRODUCTION RATES For an orebody with definite physical cutoffs*, or boundaries (such as faults or unconformities), the total ore reserves at different production rates may be identical. Consequently, for such an orebody, varying production rates result in differing mine lives. Although the metallurgical recoveries, the mine dilution, and other similar physical parameters may vary slightly at different production rates, the major differences are the capital costs and operating costs per ton. The ramifications of these differences are especially important at low production rates (up to approximately 1000 tons per day), but can also be significant at higher production rates.

For many years, coal has been known to exist in the valley of the Sabinas river, in the State of Coahuila, and for about 15 years it has been worked by the Mexican International Railway Co., which opened mines for its own fuel-supply when the railway was built, and has been mining continuously ever since. The coal-basin worked by this company lies along the Sabinas river, principally on the SW. side. It covers a wide area and has been carefully prospected, but only in a few parts have the beds been found sufficiently thick and regular for economical operation. This Sabinas basin was considered the only one in this field, until, in the Spring of 1899, the Las Esperanzas basin was found by Messrs. J. L. Elliot and E. D. Peters, who were in Mexico looking after some copper-properties. After a further examination by Mr. James T. Gardiner, of New York, the Mexican Coal & Coke Co. was organized in June, and active work was begun on Nov. 5, 1899. The coal-field of Las Esperanzas, situated in the State of Coahuila, about 85 miles SW. of Eagle Pass, Texas, adjoins and runs parallel with the Sabinas basin—an anticlinal separating the two outcrops by about 2 miles. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of a part of the basin. The coal-formation is in the Upper Cretaceous, and corresponds with the Laramie measures of the United States. Underground fires have been common in the mines of the United Verde Copper Co. for the past 22 years. The first fire started in the 300 Hampton stope in the fall of 1894, following a cave in that orebody. The soft and highly pyritic nature of the ores is responsible for most of these fires. Since ore characteristics, methods of mining and ventilation, have an important influence on mine fires, they will be described in this paper. Orebodies The ores are mostly chalcopyrite except on the upper levels where considerable chalcocite, black oxides and other secondary minerals occur. The orebodies are in the form of lenses and vary in size. Some are small, while others are several hundred feet in length by a hundred or more feet in width. These orebodies extend, in some cases, from the surface to the lowest levels of the mine and usually at a steep angle of inclination. There are three different classes of ores, classified in accordance with the gangue rock. The copper in all cases, except as above specified, is in the form of chalcopyrite. The largest and most important of these reserves are in a pyrite gangue. Next in order of importance are the schist ores and lastly the quartz porphyries. The pyrite, locally termed iron ores, average from 30 to 42 per cent. sulphur. The schist and quartz porphyries vary from 3 to 25 per cent. sulphur. Mining Methods All the orebodies were worked by the overhand square-set method of mining prior to 1908; since then the cut-and-fill, shrinkage and mill-hole systems have been largely employed. But 15 per cent. of the total tonnage now extracted is from timbered stopes. Most of this is from the upper levels where the ore is soft, heavy and more or less broken to the surface. Large reserves of these ores are being conserved for more efficient methods of mining.

IN studying the possibilities of a continuously recording magnetometer for use along the surface of the earth and in an airplane, the Federal Bureau of Mines was led to a study of the theoretical resolving power of magnetic observations, both in the variation of the total magnetic intensity and in each of the two components ordinarily measured. Along with this general study, an attempt was made to determine the relative worth of the total intensity anomaly and the vertical anomaly in geophysical prospecting. General considerations led to three conclusions: I. In the northern magnetic hemisphere of the earth, the total intensity anomaly is offset to the south of the vertical anomaly, for a positive anomaly (see Appendix, note I). 2. The resolving power of magnetic observations decreases rapidly with distance from the disturbing body. 3. The horizontal anomaly has little value in prediction of the disturbing body but might be useful in making a choice between bodies suggested by the vertical or total anomaly. Some of the considerations leading to these conclusions were: I. The normal intensity and the anomalous intensity are vectorially additive; hence for a positive anomaly in the northern magnetic hemisphere the total intensity will be a maximum at some point south of the disturbing body and north of the point at which the line to the disturbing body is parallel to the normal earth's field. The anomaly itself has a maximum value directly above the body. For a positive anomaly of constant magnitude, the total intensity will be a maximum when the anomaly vector is parallel to the normal vector. This is shown schematically in Fig. I (not to scale) for a magnetic distribution not restricted to a relatively thin sheet in the magnetic meridian. The normal field has a magnitude Io with vertical component Vo and horizontal component H,. Six station points along a traverse' across the body from south to north are shown at M to S. At each of these stations the normal magnetic field vector terminates at F. At each of these stations the magnetic field vector due to the disturbing body B terminates at A. The line through the station point and the point A passes through B. The magnitude of the anomaly, indicated by the length of the vector terminating at A, is proportional to some power of the distance from the station point to the disturbing body. If the' disturbing body B is a concentrated point of magnetic material, the anomaly is proportional to the inverse second power of the distance. For a uniform magnetic distribution over a line perpendicular to the observed traverse, the anomaly is proportional to the inverse first power of the distance. Field studies of the well-spacing problem, in which the ultimate recoveries from different fields with different well spacings have been compared, have generally suffered from the lack of knowledge as to the similarity of the inherent characteristics of the producing reservoirs being compared, such as the sand volumes, the sand porosities, the sand permeabilities, the original reservoir pressures, the presence or absence of gas caps, the presence or absence of effective water drives, and the economic limits of production rates at which the various fields were considered to have yielded their ultimate recoveries. Certainly no one who is evaluating originally the economic significance of any oil reservoir would deliberately ignore these phases of the problem. And it is equally certain that no one would reasonably expect the ultimate recoveries from two reservoirs, even with the same well spacing, to be identical regardless of these other factors. More reliable results might be expected from comparisons of the recoveries obtained from different leases with different well spacings, but producing from the same reservoir sand. Unfortunately, however, even conclusions for such studies may be subject to serious errors. The reason simply is that however much one may insist that an operator is entitled only to the oil immediately underneath his surface acreage he will nevertheless drain the surrounding properties as long as his reservoir

While the light metals are recognized generally as a distinct group in technical literature, economic classifications and data usually still treat them as part of the nonferrous group of metals. However, the economic characteristics of the light metals also differ markedly from those of other nonferrous metals. The distinctiveness of the light metals, as, a group and individually, becomes evident when their growth, since World War II is compared with that of other metals, as in Table 14.3.1. The growth of light-metals production has been much sharper than that of other metals. A weighted average for the light metals shows an increase of 112% during the 1958 to 1968 period. This compares with a 62% increase in the "All Primary Metals" component of the Federal Reserve Board Index of Industrial Production. The contrast was even sharper during the next six years (1968-1974), with light metals production up another 50% as against a 21 % increase in the FRB Primary Metals production index. The most important reason, however, for considering light metals separately is the trend and pace of technological change and not their distinctive statistics. Technology both creates and demands increasingly sophisticated materials. As technology advances and as all the world makes more extensive use of advanced technology, the importance of the light metals is likely to accelerate rapidly. There may be a profound clue to the future in the fact that light metals were predominant among the materials used in the construction of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. In determining what materials to use for the spacecraft and its equipment, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has explained that it did not look to "some of the more exotic metals" and relied instead on "generally proven materials." Accordingly, it apparently used a wide variety of metals, including precious metals, rare earths, special steels, copper, and light metals. What seems particularly significant is that, in seeking performance, NASA relied as heavily as it did on the light metals. Materials breakdown estimates show that aluminum accounted for over 75% of the materials used, titanium for another 5%, and magnesium was also used. Thus, light metals accounted for over 80%' of the materials used for the Apollo 11 spacecraft. The light metals are also unique in their availability. They rank high in abundance among the elements in the earth's crust. Aluminum is the third most abundant element, after oxygen and silicon, with magnesium ranking eighth, and titanium ninth. Among the structural metals, aluminum is the most abundant in the earth's crust, iron is second, magnesium third, and titanium fourth. We of the employer class represent labor in the social organization and in industry just as truly as do those who labor only with their hands, and, because our labor is chiefly with our brains, the duty is all the more imposed upon us to use those gifts in which we excel in helping steer a clear course through the turbulent waters in which we are now enmeshed. Only their selfish engrossment in the daily tasks they were employed to perform could possibly have permitted the great majority of the intelligent and industrious German people to become terrorized by a handful of the idle, the vicious, and the criminal, whom the elections to the National Assembly showed to be in as pitiful a minority as they are in Russia, in this, and in other countries. It is the leisure unemployment of the I.W.W.'s, the Bolsheviki, and the Sparticans that has enabled them to devote their whole time to a concerted and aggressive struggle against the great majority of those of the world's workers who are unorganized, and who are therefore even in opposition one to the other. In union there is strength, and this was never better illustrated than by these conditions. The great fallacy of our previous attitude toward social and industrial problems has been the belief that labor, by which we commonly mean organized or physical labor, is something antagonistic to and having a different object in life from that great body of unorganized laborers who work with their brains. Our difficulty has been our lack of will or opportunity to think. The hurry of our daily struggle to earn our livelihood under the nerve-racking pressure of modern civilization has left us no opportunity for quiet thought and study. The physical laborer, and above all the laborer in the mines, on the other hand, has all his hours of toil in which to think over, in all their varied aspects, those problems that concern his immediate, personal well-being. As a result he has arrived at perhaps a more true appreciation of the facts of life in their relation to social and industrial conditions than we. Have we not too readily adopted the view that, as the managers of industry under the direction of capital, it has been our duty to think and act in opposition to labor, rather than to realize that we also are laborers, have like aspirations, and should participate in a free and aggressive solution of these problems rather than leave their solution

The National Waste Terminal Storage (NWTS) Program was established in 1976. The objective of this program is to develop the technology and provide the facilities for the safe, environmentally acceptable isolation of civilian- and defense-related, high-level and transuranic nuclear wastes, including spent fuel elements, for which the federal government is responsible. The principal emphasis of this program is on disposal in mined geologic repositories. Technology development in support of the NWST program includes the formulation and management of a strong basic science and engineering program to generate an appropriate data base to aid in understanding of the key geological processes and major engineering structures involved. The current status, problems, and future plans of the technology program will be summarized.

Quarrying and crushing 500 tons of limestone plus burning some 240 tons of limestone per day are the two initial phases in the production of borax, soda ash, sodium sulfate and related chemicals at Stauffer Chemical Co.'s plant in Westend, Calif. These processing steps have been upgraded in recent years by the installation of new primary and secondary crushers, an 8 x 340-ft rotary kiln plus kiln feed, control and cooling components-all designed and manufactured by Traylor Engineering and Manufacturing Division of Fuller Co. As a result of this new equipment, a new product- quicklime-has been added to the West End product family and considerable reductions have been realized in fuel and manpower costs.

AN increased demand for brown iron ore in the Birmingham district during the past 18 months has caused renewed activity both in prospecting and mining these ores. In recent years the production in Alabama has ranged from 41,559 tons in 1932 to 639,351 tons in 1928. During the last 9 years about 83 per cent of the total brown ore produced in the United States has come from Alabama (Tables 1 and 2).
