Self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers are conquering the world for reason that they are able to solve any severe fouling problem in indirect heat transfer due to the circulation of cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube exchangers. In most cases, these particles consist of chopped metal wire. Moreover, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers perform with excellent heat transfer at very low liquid velocities, which makes completely new designs of shell and tube configurations possible. Further, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers show a strong shear thinning effect in non-Newtonian liquids. All the above characteristics make the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchanger an ideal tool for the indirect heating of laterite nickel slurry in High-Pressure-Acid-Leach (HPAL) plants. Preliminary tests and evaluations of these heat exchangers have shown that the performance and price of these heat exchangers used for the production of nickel and cobalt from a laterite slurry, cannot be matched by existing conventional heat exchange systems. This article explains the principle, design, lay-out and enormous advantages of the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchange technology in a plant suitable for an annual production of approx. 45,000 ton nickel and 4,500 ton cobalt from laterite slurry through high pressure'acid leaching.

The effects of anisotropy and stratification on flow behavior and production performance of oil and gas wells have been studied by numerous authors.1-3 Lefkovits et al.l studied the performance of totally penetrated, stratified bounded reservoirs with no crossflow. Others have studied a similar problem, but with crossflow; Russell and Prats2 have summarized the findings of these papers. Muskat3 studied the steady-state behavior of liquid flow for a partially penetrating well in an anisotropic system and concluded that the productivity weakly depended on the directional permeability ratios (kz/kr>0.1). Nisle4 used the classical method of point source solution to the diffusivity equation to study the effect of partial penetration on pressure buildup of oil wells in an isotropic system. He found that the theoretical pressure buildup curves consisted of two straight lines, the one at early buildup times having a slope proportional to the flow capacity of the open interval (l-d)k, and the other having a slope proportional to the flow capacity of the entire formation hk,. Later Brons and Marting5 supplemented the findings of Nisle and concluded that partial penetration gave rise to a pseudo damage, which reflected itself as a skin factor in pressure buildup calculations. Using the pseudo skin, they calculated the impairment of productivity of the production wells, which agreed well with the results of Muskat.6 Pizzi et al.,? using an electrical analog of a stratified system, concluded that a high pseudo damage resulted if the reservoir was partially penetrated. Harriss studied the optimum spacing and arrangement of perforations in cased holes. Hantush9 derived an expression for pressure distribution in an unbounded reservoir with restricted flow entry. Seth10 extended Hantush's work to a bounded reservoir. Odehl1 has studied a similar problem for steady-state conditions. The purpose of this work was to investigate: (1) the combined effects of anisotropy, stratification with crossflow, and restricted flow entry on pressure transient analysis of flow and buildup tests, (2) the feasibility of calculating the horizontal permeabilities of intercommunicating stratified systems, and (3) the pressure interference tests in such systems. Cylindrical bridge piers are widely used and equations exist that can predict the maximum depth of local scour around such piers. Scour around piers is an undesirable phenomenon, as it requires the foundation to be placed to a greater depth resulting in increased cost, making it worthwhile to investigate scour-reducing measures. A number of scour-reducing measures have been tried out for cylindrical bridge piers including placing a concrete collar around the pier, having a delta-wing projecting upstream in front of the pier, placing riprap around the pier, using a group of piers instead of a single pier, having a slot in the pier aligned in the longitudinal direction. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of upstream protective piles on reduction of maximum local scour depth around a cylindrical bridge pier. The upstream piles are placed at different radial distances in front of the pier and the scour depths are observed. The proposed equation of Dey (1997) for determining the maximum depth of scour around a cylindrical bridge pier is used. The reduction of local scour around the pier is compared with local scour around an unprotected pier.

This paper discusses support requirements for the proposed monorail system to be used in decline development. The monorail drilling and loading systems are systems that move on the rail (monorail) installed in the roof of the decline and supported by roof bolts, suspension chains and steel supports. However, due to the weight of the components of the two systems, it is imperative that the force in each roof bolt, suspension chain and steel support capable of suspending the weight of the heaviest component is determined. Numerical models that relate the weight of the monorail drilling and loading components to the required strength in the support system have been developed. Using these developed models, numerical values of the forces in each roof bolt, suspension chain and steel support, required to suspend the weight of the heaviest component of the monorail drilling and loading systems are determined.

The Bureau of Mines has extended its previous development of cast Mn-Cu damping alloys to powder metallurgy (P/M) consolidation of alloys containing 55 to 75 wt-pct Mn. Blends of minus 200-mesh elemental powders were compacted cold in directional and isostatic presses. With 1 pct binder, typical green densities ranged between 76 and 80 pct of theoretical when pressing at 30 or 48 tsi. Green strength increased with compacting pressure and copper content. As-sintered tensile strengths ranged to 60,000 psi fox a hydrogen, sintered 60Mn-40Cu alloy, along with 5-pct elongation. Sintered densities ranged between 90 and 96 pct of theoretical. Sintering (a as effective when holding for 1 hr at maximum temperatures of 900° to 1,040` C, dependent on composition. Strength and ductility were considerably lower than for equiva¬lent cast alloys. When aged to the damping condition, alloys containing 60 to 70 pct Mn exhibited >40 pct specific damping capacity (SDC) at 5,000-psi stress, considerably higher than values reported for equivalent cast material. Effects of 1 or 3 pct Sn or Zn additions on SDC and other properties were assessed. Trials were conducted on consolidating rings and gears of the 65Mn-35Cu alloy on industrial-type P/M equipment.

Because of the importance of recovering more oil from known petroleum reserves, increased emphasis has been placed on the application of secondary-recovery methods. It is hoped that these reports will stimulate interest in improved waterflooding techniques, thereby discouraging premature abandonment of oil leases. Previously published reports3 4 5/ have described the results of water-flooding in Roane, Pleasants, and Wetzel Counties, W. Va. (fig. 1). This report describes the South Penn Oil Co. Yawkey waterflood property, Berea sand, Griffithsville oilfield, Duval District, Lincoln County, W. Va. (fig. 2).

Engineers are frequently faced with the problem of having to predict oil recovery from a solution gas drive reservoir in the early life of a field. This is often the time when actual laboratory or field-derived gas-oil permeability (kg/k0) data are not yet available. Although excellent collections of k0/k0 data for various types of rocks may be found in the literature,1,2,3 a need exists for a more detailed correlation of k0/k0 data with core properties such as porosity, permeability, clay content or pore-size distribution. It is the purpose of this article to present this type of correlation for sandstone material. The correlation is based on laboratory tests performed on over 300 core samples from 19 reservoirs in the United States and Canada. EXPERIMENTAL Cores were analyzed by routine procedures, using samples of conventional size (7/8-in. diameter, 7/8-in long) cut parallel to the bedding planes. Air permeability was measured at 1.67 atm mean pressure in a Hassler-type apparatus. Porosity was determined with the aid of a Ruska bulk volume meter and a Boyle's Law rock volume meter, An evaporation method' was used to evaluate irreducible water saturations. Core samples were saturated with 25,000 ppm NaCl brine. The brine was reduced to the irreducible saturation, and the remainder of the pore space was filled with kerosene. This was followed by multiphase flow tests using the so-called "dispersed feed" technique.5 n this technique, gas and oil (kerosene and kerosene-saturated air) were dispersed with the aid of a porous Alun-durn feed head, the face of which contained a waffle-shaped system of Lucite-lined grooves. Oil entered the back side of the feed head and emerged at the raised areas of the front face. Gas was introduced directly into the system of grooves at the front face. The gas-oil mixture then entered the test core which was kept in capillary contact with the feed head. Permeabilities were determined from rate and pressure measurements and saturations from weights. All determinations were performed at equilibrium or steady-state conditions. Pore-size distributions were determined on selected samples by a mercury injection technique.6 GENERAL CORRELATIVE TRENDS When examining data from a given reservoir, it was noted that k0/k0 vs saturation curves became generally less steep as specific air permeability increased, a development that has a favorable effect on oil displacement efficiency by solution gas drive. This trend has also been reported by others in the literature.' An effect of porosity on k0/k0 data was also noted. This effect was not generally discernible in a study of relative permeability data for a given reservoir but became apparent when data for sandstone reservoirs of similar lithology but differing average porosity were compared. For instance, in a comparison of argillaceous and/or calcareous sandstones from 11 reservoirs ranging in average porosities from 14 to 28 per cent, a definite trend was noted, indicating that for a given permeability k0/k0 curves became less favorable (i.e., steeper) as porosity increased. A similar trend was observed for a group of comparatively clean sandstones from five reservoirs ranging in average porosities from 15 to 21 per cent. For a given permeability and porosity, comparatively clean sandstones gave more favorable k0/k0 curves than argillaceous and/or calcareous sandstone or chert reservoirs. The laboratory studies also showed that least favorable k0/k0 curves were exhibited by shaly sandstone, conglomerate, and sandstone containing carbon inclusions. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting re-search to determine the influence of mining machine mounted water sprays on airflows and methane concentrations at the face when blowing ventilation systems are used. Tests were conducted in a full-scale ventilation gallery. Airflow speeds and directions were measured at several locations near the face with ultrasonic anemometers. Methane was released from the face and concentrations were measured in the entry at locations above the mining machine using fixed point methanometers. Changes in airflow speed, direction, and methane concentrations were correlated with water spray operations. The test results using different spray arrangements and water pressures showed that operation of the machine-mounted sprayers can improve face ventilation effectiveness by increasing the velocity of airflow moving toward and away from the face. The improved ventilation resulted in reduced methane levels near the face.

Too often, a mine’s operations, including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, processing, etc., are considered independent steps, rather then a continuous process. In fact, these are interdependent operations with each step in the process having an impact on subsequent operations. If the effectiveness of the drilling and blasting operations can be improved, they will impact the entire mining process. Some of the resulting improvements include: level benches on grade; fragmentation and diggability with the result being reduced loading times; haul cycles improvements; and the crushing and milling operations will be more efficient and less energy consumed. Thunderbird refers to this as “Drill to Mill” information cycle or process. This paper focuses on two of the technological enhancements Thunderbird has added to its drill monitors that allow the mines to impact the “Drill to Mill” concept. These enhancements are: incorporating global positioning satellites into drill monitors; and radio off-loading of data.

Over the past seven years a large database of coal self-heating rates under adiabatic conditions has been developed at The University of Queensland. Coals have been tested from Australia (Queensland and New South Wales), New Zealand (North and South Island), Indonesia and more recently the United States. As a result of this work, definitive relationships and trends have been established for the effects of various intrinsic coal properties on self-heating rates and anomalous coals have also been identified. Previously held views on the effects of coal rank, type and inorganic constituents are examined in this paper. Many of the published relationships do not hold true in terms of coal self-heating rates. A propensity rating scheme has also been developed which is routinely used in Australia for assessing coals and identifying appropriate mining analogues for spontaneous combustion management planning. A selection of examples will be presented in the paper, which shows the significance of this assessment strategy.

Copper concentrate smelting directly in P-S converters was started at Onahama Smelter in 1983. Thereafter, the tonnage of concentrate smelted through the P-S converters increased, such that by 2002, it equaled the tonnage smelted through the reverberatory furnaces. In 2003, 56% of the total copper concentrates treated at Onahama Smelter were processed directly through the P-S converters. Technical improvements are reviewed and advantages of direct smelting in P-S converters are reported.

The Franklin Research Center (FRO, a Division of The Franklin Institute was contracted by the U.S. Department of Energy to investigate the application of elastomeric materials for the purpose of smoothing loads on dragline thrust rollers. This report covers the design, fabrication, and demonstration of a portable- device for measuring roller circle track deviations and roller loadings. The results of this work are documented in this report. During December 1981, a field test group visited the Falkirk Mine, Underwood, North Dakota for the purpose of demonstrating the use of the designed and built device. The data collected indicates the practicality and usefulness of such a device for determining actual dragline roller circle roller loads, while the dragline is in service. The device was useful in determining roller load peaking that may be a contributing Factor in the premature failure of these thrust rollers. The device could be used for field evaluation of elastomeric cushioning materials used to eliminate these load peaks.

IN a previous study of hypereutectoid Ti-Ni alloys' a substructure was observed in quenched powder specimens when the constitution was 100 pet retained ß body-centered-cubic phase. The alloy powders were quenched from 1000°C by a blast of helium gas and precautions already described were observed throughout the work, to minimize contamination. Ogden et al.2 have previously observed subboundaries in the ß phase of a Ti-Mn-N alloy; but this structure was attributed to nitrogen-rich a precipitation. The nitrogen content of the Ti-Ni alloys does not exceed 0.02 pet and the quenching rate was sufficiently rapid to suppress precipitation reactions. Since X-ray diffraction results have confirmed the absence of any second phase which might account for this phenomenon, it seems unlikely that this substructure is explicable in terms of nitrogen content. Fig. 1 shows the substructure in adjacent grains of 100 pet ß phase in a quenched 6 atomic pet Ni alloy. Fig. 2 shows adjacent ß grains in a similarly treated alloy; one grain contains marked intracrys-talline boundaries and the other is completely free from any substructure. The suberystals appear to have fairly regular shapes, suggesting a regular orientation relationship among them. Tempering the retained ß structure at temperatures below the eutectoid eliminates the substructure at an early stage of ß decomposition. At the present time it is possible only to guess at an explanation for this subboundary phenomenon, since very little work has been reported on substructures resulting from phase changes. This is one of a series of publications by the Bureau of Mines dealing with mining methods and costs at representative operations in the United States. The report describes all phases of the mining methods for the open-pit operation and milling practices employed at the Vermont Asbestos Mines in Lamoille and Orleans counties, Vermont. A brief history of discovery and development of these asbestos deposits is given, and the ore deposits are described. Methods employed in exploration, sampling, and estimation of tonnage and grade are outlined. A breakdown of available cost figures is summarized in the last section. All asbestos ore produced in this area has been won by the use of surface-mining methods. Two quarries, the Lowell and the "C" Area, are in operation. The quarries combined are producing and the mill is processing approximately 3,500 tons of ore per 3-shift day The average 40,000 tons of crysotile asbestos fiber produced at this plant annually accounted for 96 to 98 percent of the total fiber produced in the United States in 1958. The mine is located (fig. 1) approximately 4 miles north of Eden Mills village on the southeastern flank of Belvidere Mountain (fig. 2).

Cleveland-Cliffs’ Northshore Mining Company operates a magnetic iron ore (taconite) concentrator and pelletizer in Silver Bay, MN. These are two recent cost reduction projects: 1. Rougher Magnetic Separators were upgraded throughout the concentrator; throughput and recovery were simultaneously improved. 2. Green Ball Roll Screens on one agglomeration circuit were upgraded from 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch rolls. Throughput improved by 24% from 62 to 77 LTPH. Green ball size distribution improved as an added benefit.

THE BUREAU OF MINES is investigating methods for upgrading tar produced by the low-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal. This survey was undertaken to compile information needed for identifying the ether constituents of low-temperature tar. Physical properties are listed for 1,024 aromatic ethers. The compounds include cyclic and noncyclic, polyfunctional and monofunctional ethers with oxygen joined directly to either one or two aromatic rings. Alkyl groups up through butyl are included. The compounds are divided into 37 groups ranging in complexity from alkoxybenzenes to dibenzopyrans. Compounds containing aromatic ether groups are important constituents of the neutral oxygen components of low-temperature tar. For example, at Morgantown, W. Va., the Bureau of Mines has identified and determined the amounts of benzofuran, 2-, 3-, 5-, 6-, and 7 -methylbenzofuran, diphenyl ether, dibenzofuran, 2,3-dimethyldibenzofuran, and two other dimethyl-dibenzofurans in the neutral oil from a low-temperature bituminous coal tar (103, 104).3

The rate of decay of the energy from a hammer blow to a coal mine roof is related to the size and nature of the contacts between the rock being struck and its surroundings The use of this principle as a basis for testing roof condition in South African coal mines has been investigated under a SIMRAC funded project, with the objective of reducing the number of roof falls. ( I ) A prototype instrument having a simple numeric display related to the energy decay rate (the Acoustic Energy Meter) was constructed and used to carry out surveys at mines covering the range of coal mine roof geology and condition. The equipment was simple to use and provided excellent discrimination between visually intact roof and less stable conditions, once the normal/abnormal threshold had been established for a given site. Areas of potential roof failure were identified close to roof slips and igneous dykes, and confirmed in areas of visible deterioration. Directional stress effects on roof condition were also identified at some sites, with consistent differences in readings obtained depending on the direction of drivage. Repeat surveys also indicated areas where roof conditions were deteriorating with time. Based on the success of the prototype, a hand held version of the instrument. has been developed to a specification from Anglo Coal. This incorporates a simple 'traffic light' green / amber/ red display, making the device suitable for routine use by mine operatives This version is now undergoing trials at an Anglo Coal mine. It is concluded that the Acoustic Energy Meter shows great potential as a test instrument providing output which relates to the stability of the immediate roof.
