The objective of a mine planning exercise is to plan a safe mine that maximises net present value (NPV) for the project. Two primary elements are key to design of a mine plan optimised to maximise profit: selection of an optimised production rate and selection of an optimised equipment fleet. Both depend upon accurate estimations of capital and operating costs for the equipment and for the life cycle of the mining operation. Once a trial production rate is determined, a primary equipment fleet, ie excavators, haulers, and blasthole drills, can be determined based on material characteristics and haulage distances and gradients. An auxiliary fleet, dozers, road maintainers, service trucks, etc can be determined using less rigid productivity criteria. With an equipment fleet determined, operating and support personnel can be assigned based on shift requirements and equipment operating needs; and material and supply requirements can be estimated. Knowing the areal dimensions of the major equipment items, road widths and repair shop dimensions can be determined. Personnel numbers and supply requirements determine the square metre sizes of offices, change rooms, and storage facilities. Reliable sources of capital and operating unit prices and costs for all these items are referenced in the paper. Once preliminary capital and operating cost estimates are calculated by applying unit costs to equipment, personnel, material and supply needs, potential profit can be tested using DCF techniques. An optimised mine plan can then be determined by testing the potential profitability of multiple mine production rates. Because of the economies of scale, full capital and operating cost estimates must be completed for each production rate in order to produce meaningful comparisons.

Comminution is a vital part of minerals extraction, and therefore of the South African economy. The high cost and throughput-limiting nature of comminution forms a strong motivation for research directed at improving the efficiency of the process. Building on a ten year background of fundamental charge motion research, a new formal UCT flotation and communication group has been formed. The group is also moving strongly into the field of milling circuit modelling and simulation, based on close links formed with the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) of Australia, and an international collaborative research programme.

What is a nugget effect? In the early development of geostatistics, the term ?nugget effect? was coined for the apparent discontinuity at the beginning of many semi-variogram graphs. This name was chosen to reflect the large differences found between neighbouring samples in ?nuggety? mineralizations such as Wits gold reefs. Geostatistical theory assumes that the difference between a sampled value and a potential repeat sample at the same location is actually zero. Included in this ?nugget effect? would be true variation between contiguous samples due to the nature of the mineralization, micro-fracturing, nugget or crystal size and so on. Also included in the nugget effect would be any ?random? sampling variation which might occur due to the method in which the sample was taken, the adequacy of the sample size, the assaying process, etc. Arguments were put forward that ?sampling errors? actually exist at zero distance. Some geostatistical schools actually maintain that ?nugget effect? is all sampling error. This would imply that ?perfect? sampling would eliminate the nugget effect entirely. There is now a dichotomy both in the geostatistical world and in the software packages provided for geostatistical analyses. It may seem academic to argue over whether the semi-variogram model should take a value of zero, a value equal to the nugget effect or a partial value at distance zero. However, the decision can have a profound effect on both the estimated resource and in our confidence on that resource. Whereas most geostatistical texts define the semi-variogram model as taking the value of zero at zero distance, others imply that the full nugget effect should be used at zero distance. For example: ?The nugget effect refers to the nonzero intercept of the variogram and is an overall estimate of error caused by measurement inaccuracy and environmental variability occurring at fine enough scales to be unresolved by the sampling interval3. ?Christensen4 has shown that the ?nugget effect?, or non-zero variance at the origin of the sernivariogram, can be reproduced by a measurement error model. ?The nugget effect is considered random noise and may represent short-scale variability, measurement error, sample rate, etc.5. In many training texts and web courses, the definition of the semi-variogram is ambiguous as the formulae for semi-variogram models is not actually specified at zero distance6,7,8.

"This paper describes an innovative method, used for the first time in India, for the construction of a 1.0metre-thick positive plastic concrete cut-off wall (CoW) at the upstream toe of the dam at the Kishanganga Hydro-Electric Project in Jammu & Kashmir- India. The extremely difficult bouldery geology with an overburden laden with very hard Panjal Volcanics (quartz, feldspar, muscovite and chlorite minerals) boulders of up to 0.8m to 1.8 metres in size with UCS of up to 265 MPa and the requirement of socketing the CoW into the underlying hard bedrock (UCS 265 MPa) for 1.50m made the choice for the excavation methodology critically difficult. After having evaluated several other existing methods – including hydromill trenchers – the Civil Contractor Hindustan Construction Company, in agreement with its Foundations Engineering Consultant (Ricerca e Sviluppo – Cantieri e Gestioni) opted for a two-stage construction method: firstly, preliminary full-depth drilling and “surgical” blasting with full-length inclinometer checking of borehole verticality to ensure the exact location of rock fracturing and fragmentation coincided with the required position and that it was vertical, notwithstanding efficient trenching into the bedrock of a nominal 1m by 1.5m section; and, secondly, excavation by using heavy duty mechanical rope grabs made locally and developed by the Consultant in collaboration with the Contractor. The details of the methodology and the salient construction data is presented and commented for the 33-metre deep CoW installed at a working platform elevation of 2364.50 m above sea level in a very remote area.BACKGROUNDThe Kishanganga Hydro Electric Project (KGHEP) is a ROR (run-of-the-river) project is located on the Kishanganga River some 140kms North-West of Srinagar, capital of Jammu & Kashmir State of India, for generating 330MW of power in a 90% dependable annual year. The key components of the project are: Concrete Face Rockfill Dam (CFRD), Chute Spillway, Plastic Concrete Cut-off Wall (CoW), Head Race Tunnel (HRT), Surge Shaft (SS), Inclined Pressure Shaft (PS), underground Power House and Transformer Hall, Tail Race Tunnel (TRT).The Power House Site is accessible throughout the year from Srinagar while the remote Dam Site, with its tortuous road climbing the Rajdan Pass at 3556m (11,667 ft) above sea level and several 20-tonne capacity Bailey bridges removed prior to snowfall, remains inaccessible for around 4 months between mid-November to mid-May due to winter and heavy snowfall - the only access is by helicopter, weather permitting. Temperature at the Dam Site drops down to minus 27degrees Celsius during winter, therefore, careful planning from the beginning was most essential for the successful delivery of the Project.This paper deals with the Cut-Off Wall construction which was performed, for the first time in India, adopting a “Drilling and Surgical Blasting” method. Luminescence excited by electron bombardment, or cathodoluminescence (CL), is a very useful tool in petrographic examination of rocks, minerals and ores. Differences in luminescence colors and intensities allow detection and delineation of mineral species and composition zones difficult to separate visually by normal polarized light microscopy. The cold cathode CL chamber at Indiana University is used with a binocular microscope that has interchangeable attachments for a normal film camera, a digital camera and a fiber optic spectrometer. This allows imaging of the specimens as well as limited spectrographic analysis of the emitted luminescence. The chamber on this CL unit is large enough to accommodate several thin sections, polished mounts, grain mounts or rock slices at one time. Luminescence petrographic techniques were used to study alkali syenites and carbonatites from the Arkansas. Alkali feldspars in the syenites reveal a history of growth, fenitization and replacement through color and intensity differences. Primary orthoclase luminesces bright blue and is often zoned with a duller blue overgrowth of microcline. Fenitization of the feldspars is demonstrated by dull to bright red luminescence and replacement veins of albite often have a bright yellow green luminescence. Late microcline and perthites from the syenite pegmatites have a dull yellow to orange luminescence. Easily visible on this background of feldspars are grains of apatite (yellow), fluorite (violet), zircon (greenish), sodalite (orange) and mosandrite (green). Complex pseudoleucite syenites from Magnet Cove, Arkansas show similar minerals but also include xenolithic quartz (violet), manganwollastonite (bright orange), benitoite (intense blue) and lorenzenite (green). Carbonatites from Arkansas contain a wide variety of calcite textures and intensities of luminescence. Grains of carbonatite in well cuttings are easily distinguished from sedimentary calcites by their complex “flame” luminescence and the frequent presence of euhedral apatite grains (yellow). Apatite crystals separated from the Arkansas River Valley carbonatites by acid digestion show complex zoning. The cores of these apatites are yellow luminescing due to CL activation by Mn enrichment while the rims are violet luminescing due to REE enrichment. Complex zonation between the cores and rims is easily visible using CL.

THE object of this investigation was to make a comprehensive study of the degassing of molybdenum in order to determine how rigorous a treatment was necessary to completely remove sorbed gases from molybdenum electrodes in vacuum tubes. Some work has also been done with tungsten, nickel, iron and carbon. As a logical development of this work it has been shown that the gas is present throughout the body of the metal and a study has been made of the solubility of nitrogen in molybdenum and tungsten and the rate of diffusion of nitrogen through molybdenum has been calculated. Tests were made on molybdenum from all the commercial sources and no difference was discovered in the nature of the gases present, the amounts or the ease of removal. The reason for this was apparent when a study was made of the manner in which gases are absorbed by gas-free molybdenum. It is necessary to heat molybdenum to 1760°C.oin a vacuum of the order of 0.001 micron for a time which varies lineally with the thickness, in order to obtain a condition in which no further gas is evolved by the sample. A sample so degassed can be handled and subsequently assembled in a tube and then degassed readily. The gases obtained from molybdenum are carbon monoxide and nitrogen, the nitrogen being the more difficult to remove. APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUE The apparatus is shown in Figs. I and 2. It consisted of two units, a degassing system and an analytical system. Each had a bake-out oven, as shown surrounding the systems in the sketches. The system will be traced, starting from the sample in the degassing system. A water-cooled quartz chamber surrounded the sample. The high-frequency coil, which heated the sample, extended only around this chamber and was cooled by an air blast. High-frequency power of 0800-meter wave length was obtained from a self-rectifying oscillator circuit with a maximum power input of 20 kw. A graded seal connected the quartz to the rest of the apparatus, which was of hard' glass. The temperature of the molybdenum sample was observed by an optical pyrometer through an optical window about 40 cm. distant from the sample. Since the object viewed under these conditions was not 'a black body, true temperature was not observed, but the so-called "brightness temperature." The correction of this to true temperature is discussed in a later section. Gold and Silver bearing epithermal veins of the Golden Cross deposit are hosted in Miocene and Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanics occurring 8 km northwest of Waihi at the southern extent of the Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Veining occurred during a period of hydrothermal activity that began early to late Pliocene, and possibly continued into the Pleistocene.   Field relations and petrographic relationships reveal that multiple generations of FeS2 occur in the Golden Cross region, with FeS2 occurring in all nine rock types recognised at Golden Cross. The variability of FeS2 morphology was investigated by preparation of high purity FeS2 separates, and grain counting. Marcasite is the dominant FeS2 phase at Golden Cross, and along with pyrite is shown to have a systematic habit variation. Pyrite shows a sequence from cubes through octahedra to pyritohedra to dendritic growth. This pyrite sequence conforms to an experimentally determined sequence. The parallel sequence for marcasite at Golden Cross is from tabular through bladed aggregates to euhedral miscellaneous marcasite morphologies. The FeS2 sequences observed are believed to be due to increasing temperature, and perhaps also increasing FeS2-oversaturation and fluid flow.

Metal dusting is a corrosion phenomenon that occurs in strongly carburizing gas atmospheres at elevated temperatures. Reaction kinetics and product characterizations of Alloys 602CA and 800 were examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The results showed that Alloy 602CA is more resistant to metal dusting than Alloy 800. Visual examination and SEM surface analysis showed that Alloy 800 suffered metal dusting attack after a relatively short exposure period. The amount of coke deposits increased on Alloy 800 with increased exposure from 96 to 336 hours. X-ray diffraction on the reacted surfaces identified graphite and austenite in both alloys and some iron oxides/spinel for Alloy 800.

The Finnish Defence Forces has destroyed old and spoilt munitions in open surface mass detonations at Hukkakero fell in municipality of Kittilä, Lapland, since 1988. The technique was learned from Sweden. The destruction camp is organized every year at autumn and it lasts 4-5 weeks. During the disposal period one or two charges are exploded per day. The gross weight of a typical charge varies from 150-250 tons including 15-25 tons of explosives. They mainly consist of TNT, but may also contain smaller amounts of amatol and hexotol. As a booster there have been used 2-3 tons of emulsion explosives.

MINING operations in the Waihi mine began, under the present proprietorship in the year 1889. Previous to this, and as far back as the year 1880, the presence of reefs in the Martha Hill had been known, and surface working on a small scale had beencarried out, without any great measure of success. The only method of treatment in use at this time was the old system of light stamps, amalgamating tables and berdans, and recovery by this method being low, little margin for profit was left, so thatthe property in these days was not considered of great importance and work on the area was only carried on spasmodically by different owners.On the transfer of the leases to the present company, calcining, dry crushing, and hot pan amalgamation was adopted as the method of treatment, and this system was continued till the more modern cyanide process was introduced and applied. As themethods of treatment and gold-saving became more efficient with the application of more modern and scientific processes, the importance and future prospects of the mine became more and more pronounced, and mining on a larger and more comprehensive scale was gradually established.As in the case of ore treatment, mining methods in the early stages were not as far adv.anced as the adopted practice of today, and numerous shafts, levels close together in vertical height.

ntroduction As the gold mining industry continues to develop in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, more deposits will undoubtedly be discovered that will be amenable to development. The Pueblo Viejo gold mine is currently in operation in the Dominican Republic. It has become an important component of that country's economy. Pueblo Viejo output is important to the government as a foreign currency earner. It is also said to be among the world's more successful gold mines. But, while Pueblo Viejo is successful, no other major gold discoveries have been made in recent years. Therefore, alluvial deposits of gold have caught the attention of geologists on the Island of Hispaniola. In the past four years, exploration and investigation of alluvial deposits have been initiated in both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. This type of activity is expected to continue over the next few years. Alluvial gold mining is rudimentary gold washing, done mostly by farmers. It is an old tradition, dating back at least 100 years, and is done by small, independent, or community farming villages in the mountains and plains of the Dominican Republic. Investigations in the DR Recently, alluvial gold investigations have been undertaken in well known locations of the Dominican Republic. One is in the Villa Altagracia area. Here, the terraces and gravels of the Haina River basin were examined, test-pitted, and assayed by Minera Altagracia, a local Dominican mining group. Results led to a new investigation by the state-owned Rosario Dominicana (RD), the company that mines the gold at Pueblo Viejo. Rosario tested areas previously investigated by Minera Altagracia. RD could not define the type of concentration that could justify an industrial-scale type of exploitation. The Haina River placers are located in the flats and valleys of Central Dominican Republic. They are classified as small-scale type of operations where local cooperatives can do the traditional gold washing. It is not now considered a dredgable project for a mining company. The next alluvial gold investigation was undertaken by the Dominican Department of Mines and others in an area of some 700 km2 (270 sq miles) in the northeast near Miches. Farmers have been washing gold in streams and excavating pits in various areas, particularly La Mina and have made a living. Government geologists panned several hundred streams and river tributaries. They also washed material from deep excavations. The results, however, were negative insofar as locating alluvial gold concentrations suitable for large-scale or industrial-scale exploitation. The most favorable locations were the terraces along the Jayán and Cuarón Rivers in the area of Miches. But the grade od concentration is poor. Actually, only traces of gold were found in these

In several of the States of Australia, mining on private property has been seriously hampered by the fact that large areas of land have been alienated from the Crown before the discovery of gold or other minerals. In Western Australia this difficultyhas only occurred to a small extent, and has largely been overcome by an act entituled "An Act to Permit Mining on Private Property, No. XXIX., 'October, 28th, 1898." Under this act, the holder of a miner's right can apply for a gold mining lease on private land; such applicant may treat privately with the owner of such land as to the amount of compensation to be paid for surface ,damage, or the case may be brought before the Warden who will assess the damages. "Methane hydrate is of interest as an alternative energy resource in Japan and the R&D program has been ongoing for ten years (MH21: http://www.mh21japan.gr.jp/english/). Rare-earth element-rich deep-sea mud (REE Mud) is also of interest as an alternative resource in Japan and an exploration program has been launched in 2013.For methane recovery from the hydrate, a depressurization method pumps up water in a production well and has been successfully applied in field production tests (MH21: http://www.mh21japan.gr.jp/english/). However, micro-bubbles, which appear in the hydrate dissociation and water recovery processes may present an environmental issue. It may stick on clay and silt particles that accompany the recovered water, and may disturb settling of the particles in the water separation tank. For exploitation of REE Mud, an air-lift system has been proposed in the feasibility study (Abe et al., 2012). The same micro-bubble issue is expected during the air, water, and mud particle separation processes. In this research, the authors conducted a preliminary tank experiment for clarifying the effect of micro-bubbles on settling behavior of fine kaolinite particles. The behavior was continuously recorded by a still camera and the images were analyzed by the gray scale intensity. From the results the authors found a suspension effect for the settling of fine particles as the result of micro-bubbles. The effect should be studied in detail for preventing some serious environmental impacts during deep-sea mining."

The recovery of copper and cobalt from ancient copper slags from the Küre region of Turkey was investigated. A fayalitic-type of ancient copper slag containing 1.24% Cu, 0.53% Co and 53.16% Fe were subjected to an experimental study. Two different routes were followed to recover the metal values. The first route was roasting the slag with pyrite followed by leaching. The second route was flotation of the slags, roasting of the flotation tailings with pyrite and leaching. The second route was found to be suitable for the treatment of the copper slag studied. In the flotation step, a copper concentrate containing approximately 11% Cu was produced with a 77% recovery while 93% of the cobalt stayed in the tailings. In the roasting experiments, the effects of roasting time, pyrite: slag ratio and roasting temperature on the dissolution efficiencies of Cu and Co were investigated, and the optimum conditions were determined. In the tests, 87% of the cobalt dissolution was observed after one hour of roasting at 500°C with a pyrite: slag ratio of 3:1. The copper dissolution in the tests was 31%. Based on the results of this study, a process flowsheet is proposed for the evaluation of these slags.

The aim of this investigation was to reduce the cost of primary steel de-oxidation by substitution of aluminium primary de-oxidation with a practice that uses carbon. The cost of carbon is four times lower than that of aluminium. The application of carbon would directly result in raw material cost savings. Investigations were conducted at Iscor?s Newcastle steel plant on various steel grades. Specific production aspects were emphasized to ensure that the cost savings accrued would not create secondary expenses. These production aspects entailed: ?Yields on de-oxidation elements ?De-oxidation capabilities ?Alloying yields (Mn and Si) ?Carbon-pickup ?Nitrogen-pickup ?Temperature loss during tap ?Steel cleanliness ?Slag morphology. This project proved that carbon de-oxidation, apart from reducing de-oxidation raw material cost due to cheaper raw materials being used and lower consumption rates, resulted in steel that is cleaner and has lower nitrogen concentrations. Carbon primary de-oxidation has been implemented at Iscor?s Newcastle plant on a large range of steel grades, ranging from ultra-high carbon (> 0.60% C) to ultra-low carbon (< 0.03% C) grades. A net saving of between R100 000 and R200 000 per month was achieved.

Mantoverde Division of Empresa Minera Mantos Blancos S.A., Anglo American Chile, developed an open pit mine to exploit copper oxide ore. Mantoverde mine is located in the Province of Chañaral, Northern Chile, about 1,020 Km far from Santiago. Currently, the East wall of the mine is reaching the condition of final pit. To evaluate the possibility of a pit optimization on this wall a geotechnical study was performed, including slope stability analyses by limit equilibrium and numerical methods. As a result of this geotechnical evaluation, it was decided to allow a probability of failure of 12% for instabilities affecting up to 600,000 tonnes, and use steeper slopes on the East Wall of the mine. This paper describes this geotechnical evaluation and how the results of the stability analyses were used to define a flexible slope design, which allows modification if the observed slope behaviour deviated from the expected one.

EFFORTS to obtain definite quantitative data when employing the currently used bubble pick-up method1,2 as a pre-flotation investigation tool led to the adoption of the magnifying mirror method and the microscopic method modifications. Quantitative data obtained by these two methods were converted into bubble pick-up indices and bubble pick-up coefficients. Rough correlations were established between the calculated indices and the results of contact angle testing as well as actual flotation under the same conditions. The basic steps of the magnifying mirror method are as follows: 1—mixing 200 ml distilled water, sized and cleaned mineral particles of approximately 0.5 g, pH regulator, and flotation reagents in a glass beaker; 2—swirling the mineral particles to the center of the beaker to leave a clear circumference; 3—pressing an air bubble against the mineral particles for about 1 sec, and then moving the mineralized air bubble to the clear part of the beaker; and 4—dropping all the attached mineral particles of the air bubble by tapping the bubble holder, and counting the number of the dropped particles by looking at the magnified image in the mirror positioned beneath the beaker. This method is impractical for mineral particles which are transparent in water or finer than 200 mesh. The microscopic method is essentially similar to the above described magnifying mirror method, with the exception that the mineralized air bubble was drawn up into the bubble holder and subsequently discharged onto an externally placed watch glass, where the number of pick-up particles was counted with the aid of a microscope or hand lens. Drying was necessary when the discharged liquid interfered with the counting. The results of the bubble pick-up tests can be simply expressed in the form of the actual count. However, this can be misleading because the number of pick-up particles varies not only with the size of bubble but also with the size of particles. This short-coming is largely remedied by the use of the bubble pick-up index. as calculated from the following equation: PI = (pn/p) 100 [1] in which PI and pn are respectively the pick-up index and the number of pick-up particles under any test conditions, and p is the maximum number of pick-up particles of the same mineral under optimum flotation conditions, with the same size holder and particle. The bubble pick-up coefficient is a term coined to denote the difference between the bubble pick-up index of mineral particles in a liquid and that of the same mineral-liquid mixture plus a chemical reagent at the same pH value. For example, the difference between the pick-up index of a naturally floatable bituminous coal in a solution of water and kerosene and that of the same coal in water alone is a bubble pick-up coefficient. Compared with the contact angle method, the quantitative bubble pick-up method is inferior in accuracy but superior in sensitivity. Other advantages of the bubble pick-up method are that the apparatus can be easily assembled, the mineral sample is conventionally prepared, and the test procedure is relatively simple. References S.
