Current practice for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGM) from flotation concentrates is by energy-intensive smelting processes followed by separation and refining of the base and precious metals. Energy costs are rapidly increasing in South Africa and this trend is forecast to continue in future years. Moreover, the smelting operations are highly susceptible to deleterious constituents, particularly chromite; and the increasing tonnages of UG2 chromititic ore being mined results in an increasing chromite content of smelter feeds. Hence there is a substantial incentive to assess and implement alternative processes to smelting for the treatment of PGM concentrates. The Kell process is a patented hydrometallurgical alternative to smelting that is totally insensitive to the chromite content of the feed concentrate and comprises three commercially proven unit operations (pressure oxidation leaching of base metals and sulfur, roasting and chlorination of precious metals). The Kell process provides the opportunity for existing and new PGM producers to significantly reduce their energy consumption, and in particular their consumption of electricity, by removing the need to smelt PGM concentrates. Energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions and installed power requirements are also much reduced. Compared with smelting and refining these reductions are calculated as: ? Total energy consumption-50% reduction ? Electrical energy consumption-84% reduction ? Energy consumption costs-76% reduction ? C02 emissions-70% reduction ? Installed power requirement 92% reduction. The data obtained from simple laboratory batch amenability testing can be readily applied to the Simulus mass and energy balance simulation procedure to determine energy and reagent consumptions, equipment selection and process optimization. The applicability of Kell to treating low-grade 'dirty' concentrates with high UG2 content as well as to polymetallic concentrates containing base metals as the major payable metals with subordinate PGM means that these savings can also be expected when the process is used for treating a range of concentrate types and grades. An analysis of the wash thickener-two stage filtration circuit was undertaken to quantitatively describe the circuit performance. On the basis of information developed in this study, the factors of major importance in reducing soluble loss are: filter wash, wash zone size, filter capacity, filter feed pulp dilution, blow back, filter cloth, water to repulp, water to primary wash, water to feed pulp and thickener underflow. The wash thickener-two stage filtration circuit has been used in many hydrometallurgical plants to separate solute from leach solids. As many as 20 to 30 plant operating variables determine the performance of the wash circuit and hence the soluble loss. The complex relationships of these variables, with each other and with soluble loss, make the evaluation of their effect on mill performance difficult. An analysis of this type of circuit was undertaken to quantitatively describe the circuit performance. THE CIRCUIT The diagram in Fig. 1 represents the operation of the wash thickener-two stage filter circuit. This circuit provides for counter current, cross current or for a combination of countercurrent-cross current operation. The feed pulp stream, J, is intended to include any solution or water, other than primary and secondary filtrate, which enters the wash thickener. Except for filter washing, the operations in the circuit are simple mixing operations which can be described by material balance. The concentration of solute in the filtrate and cake solution after application of wash liquor cannot be described by simple material balance. A new probabilistic approach is introduced for slope stability analysis including adverse impact of blasting vibrations. The material strength within a slope area is randomized in this bi-variate joint probability analysis. To be a completely general engineering method, the new probabilistic approach employs the random variable transformation technique; the Hermite model of the Gaussian transformation function, which transforms the experimental histogram of strength values to the standard Gaussian variables. Because bi-normal joint probability is analyzed on the true probability region projected on the Gaussian transformed variable plane, it is an exact solution of slope stability based on the available sample data. Details of the probabilistic approach are given through a case study on an iron ore mine. The case study demonstrated that the probabilistic approach is effective and simple enough to be a routine engineering practice for slope analysis.

Six years ago it was my responsibility to give the presidential address, and now that privilege has come my way again. On that occasion we were gathered atWhyalla and I took the opportunity of putting before members some observations on the problems we then faced in Australia, and some gains we had been able to chalk up during those early postwar years. You may recall that we were then just beginning to emerge from the difficulties of postwar reconstructions - of fuel and power shortages, and a grossly inadequate manpower for the tasks facing us. The expansion of manufacturing industry in Australia greatly stimulated by wartime activities, and by the postwar developments of many institutions - ran ahead of the supporting services and of the supply of labour to do thejobs. For many industries this unfortunate state of affairs had meant operating at rates well below their installed capacities and therefore levels of output insufficient for Australia's rapidly growing needs. When I last spoke to you these problems were still with us, though their intensity was beginning to lessen as a result of vigorous efforts by industry and governments to reduce them. But I must confess that my thoughts on that occasion were full of those problems and of the effect they were having on the iron and steel industry of this country-of the coal shortage, the labour shortage, and the many other difficulties we were then faced with - and all at a time when the stepping up of our postwar expansion programme was of vital concern to all of us.What a different picture it is six years later! THE Yallourn chimney has aroused interest, as it is, for the time being, the tallest structural erection in Australia. Its height was not decided on, however, with the object of breaking records, but is purely incidental to the purpose which it serves. Theboiler plant at the briquetting works (first instalment) consists of five Babcock and Wilcox land-type water-tube boilers, each of 4510 sq ft. heating su:r£ace and 225 sq. ft. grate area in the form of step grates. Four boilers will normally produce 73,000 lb. of steam per hour at a gauge pressure of 265 lb. and a temperature of 6500 F., the fifth boiler being a reserve. Each boiler will consume about 100 tons of Yallourn coal per 24 hours. Provision is made for future installation of economizers, should it be found desirable. Designing for this condition, and allowing for a waste gas temperature of 3500 F. and an air temperature exceeding 1000 it was found necessary to have a draft of about 1.3 in. (water gauge) at the base of the chimney, and to deal with about 2000 cub. ft. of gases per second. Estimates were made of the cost of providing the necessary draught by means of fans and by means of a tall chill).ney. The annual charges of the two methods differed only slightly, and the tall chimney wasselected as being the more general practice in briquetting factories.Estimates were prepared for brick and concrete chiIlllleys. Yallourn bricks at that time were hand-made, and, while very suitable for domestic work, were not capable of withstanding high compressive stresses. The chimney design to suit these bricks thus required to be on very ample lines, resulting in high cost. Four manganese dioxide leaching microorganisms, an Achromobacter spp, Aspergillus niger, Elllerobacter cloacae and Elllerobacter agglomerails were purified from sucrose enriched crude mixed cultures which contained at least sixteen, non-leaching, morphologically different, colony types. Fastest leaching rates were obtained from the original enrichment's mixed cultures (1.26 g Mn++ I/d) while best yields of Mn++ m terms of sugar use came from Achromobacter and A. niger being 0.84 and 0.89 g Mn++/g sucrose respectively. The peak efficiency in manganese reduced, per carbohydrate used, coincided with the exponential growth phase for Achromobacter. The two Elllerobacter species performed better in stationary or senescent growth phases.

The reduction of zinc from slags by a molten, carbon-saturated bath was examined in a laboratory study under conditions of continuous slag feeding. The results show that it is possible to reduce the bulk of the zinc from the slag before there is a net reduction of iron. However, the recovery of zinc was not as high as in batch tests performed in an earlier study. Lead in the slag was reduced simultaneously with the zinc to very low levels and was volatilised. Copper in the slag was reduced and dissolved in the alloy. An attempt was made to identify potentially commercial ways of treating zinc slags using an iron bath. The approaches that appear to have the greatest potential are reduction in a batch process using electrical heating and reduction in a continuous process with co- or countercurrent flow of the slag and alloy. In the latter the alloy would be prepared in a separate furnace before being contacted with the slag. The purpose of this would be to superheat and carburise the alloy so that no additional heat or reductant would have to be supplied in the slag-alloy reactor

Slurry pipelines are used in a number of countries to convey processed ore mixed with water over long distances from remote mine sites to ports or plants for further processing. In Egypt and Sudan, numerous mineral resources are scattered in remote areas. Through the years, Egyptian geologists have identified 268 sites for metallic ores and 386 sites for industrial nonmetallic minerals. A large portion of these sites are in the Eastern Desert in an area called the Nubian Shield. Similar sites are found in the Sudan where mining contributes to less than 1 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). There are three important components of infrastructure needed to develop these resources ? power, water and transportation. While Egypt is able to satisfy 70 percent of its needs in iron ore from the Gadideh Mine in the Western Desert, it needs to expand its other resources to reduce imports heavily sedimented. Dredging of these sediments and transporting them by slurry pipelines would enhance an industry of bricks or agricultural development based on tailings technology often used in mining. This article explores the potential for slurry technology for opening new mines in the desert or recuperating the sediments of the Nile. The technology by itself would be new to both countries and would benefit from collaboration, particularly to de-silt the Nasser-Nubia Lake.

Physical testing of rock support for rockbursting conditions has been carried out for over 40 years. A review of this testing shows that it has been mostly component?based, rather than actually testing support systems. Further, it is concluded that none of the testing is truly representative of rockburst loading in a similitude sense. Similitude conditions are not achievable, mainly because the real conditions in a rockburst event, such as seismic source location and magnitude, wave frequencies, amplitudes, and interactions, are not all known. Because such information is not available, and because the results of all testing carried out to date have not been able to define, for support design purposes, the capacity of support systems, ongoing physical testing of rockburst support systems is essential. It is essential that the test should simulate, or actually take place in, a supported rock excavation. A rock support system is a combination of individual support components that work together to retain and contain the rock. In doing this, the components are subjected to loading by the rock and to interactive loading between one component and another. It is necessary to prove the capacity of such rockburst support systems by subjecting them to severe loading, as in direct blasting. The direct blasting approach, pioneered more than 40 years ago, probably still provides the greatest validity as a significant test of rockburst support capabilities, even though it does not simulate a rockburst. Direct blast testing of rockburst support systems in a surface environment, such as in a quarry or on exposed rock cutting surfaces, could represent a practical development of the approach, facilitating the execution and monitoring of tests.

Channel iron deposits (CID) consist of ferruginous chemical sediments, and are an unusual subset of Phanerozoic ooidal ironstone deposits almost unique to the Pilbara, where they constitute around 19 per cent of the Pilbara’s iron ore exports. These deposits occupy many of the ancestral river channels of the Pilbara region, especially the Robe River palaeochannels, incising and meandering through the Precambrian banded iron formations (BIF) of the Hamersley Group and the underlying Fortescue Volcanics.This paper explores the factors underlying geochemical variation in CID, particularly the chemical properties of goethite. The selected deposits in the western Robe palaeochannel and its tributaries show little or no secondary reworking by later water tables. There is a total absence of aluminosilicate clays with all the deleterious elements such as aluminium and silica. Instead, these are associated with the goethite mineral lattice, either within or adsorbed to the cortices of pelletoids.A thickly vegetated environment, and the presence of the Maddina Volcanics as potential source rocks for these western Robe CID is offered as an explanation for relatively high aluminium in the deposits studied, and, in turn, as the reason most parts of the palaeochannel are preserved as inverted topography.CITATION:Beattie, E, Placzek, C and Blake, K, 2017. The main constituents of ferromanganese slags are silicates of Mn, Ca and AI. Factors affecting the recovery of manganese from a low manganese content ferromanganese slag (about 16 per cent MnO) during acid leaching were studied. These included time, temperature, agitation, sulphuric acid addition, solid:liquid ratio and particle size. Agitation rates greater than 300 rev/min. leaching periods greater than 30 min and temperatures above ambient were found to have no effect on Mn recovery. Dissolution of Mn was found to be highly dependent on the amount of acid added.About 90 per cent of the Mn was recovered when 5·5 times the stoichiometric amount of acid was used. About 28 per cent of the Mn was recovered when the stoichiometric quantity of acid (with respect to Mn alone) was used. However, the recovery increased to about 75 per cent when the total stoichiometric requirement of acid with respect to Ca, Al, Mg and Fe as well as Mn was used for leaching. The extent of Mn dissolution also depended on the particle size of the slag. The percentage of Mn recovery (using 5·5 times the stoichiometric amount of acid) increased from about 60 per cent to about 92 per cent when particle size decreased from -36 +52 to -150 +200 mesh (B.S.S.). When the results of this study were compared with those in a previous study involv,ing the leaching of a high manganese content slag (containing about 40 per cent MnO) results were similar except that there was a gr-eater consumption of acid in the present case (i.e. low manganese content slag).

In addition to a range of pyrometallurgical options, Mintek specialises in DC arc furnace technology and has pilot plant facilities up to 5.6 MVA, as well as a strong base in process and arc modelling. Industrial processes have been developed for ferrochromium production, ilmenite smelting, and cobalt recovery from slag. Recent work has been done on such processes as the production of ferronickel from laterite ores, the fuming and condensation of magnesium, and the recovery of platinum group metals from 'difficult' feedstocks.

The Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project is part of a regional Public-Private initiative to allow double stack container trains a direct route from the Port of Norfolk through Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and into Central Ohio. In the Preliminary Engineering stage, 30 existing tunnels were assessed and 28 were found to need clearance improvements to allow the use of double stack trains. Alternative tunnel enlargement methods were developed to achieve the desired clearance improvements, while maintaining structural integrity and minimizing disruption to train traffic. This paper summarizes the geometric and condition investigations of the existing tunnels, as well as describes the preferred methodologies to achieve the desired clearance. The clearance improvements will be implemented beginning in the summer of 2007.

The gold mining industry in South Africa stands to benefit much from the implementation of the self-directed work team concept. Its introduction implies flatter hierarchical structures, empowerment of the workforce and increased participation. Research indicates that half of the initiatives to implement self-directed work teams, however, fail, and it is therefore imperative for companies to be aware of the factors impacting on the effectiveness of self-directed work teams in order to focus on these early in the implementation phase. The objective of the study was to qualitatively determine these factors. Semi-structured interviews based on the phenomenological method were carried out. The sample included members of, and individuals involved with, self-directed work teams (N= 26) from a large gold mining company in South Africa. Results show that most respondents rated the availability of resources to do their work as the most important factor affecting their effectiveness.

Two structurally and mineralogically distinct sulphiderich veins cross-cutting the disseminated sulphides of the Nairne Pyrite Member appear to be products of local remobilization of sulphides under fracture-induced free energy gradients during regional metamorphism and tectonic deformation.The contrasting mineralogy of the two vein types may have arisen as a result of differences in the structural orientation of the veins and!or the relative ages of the veins.

Megascopic and microscopic studies of cleats and mining induced cleavage in Ihe first workings at Leichhardt Colliery reveal the presence of four distinct fracture sets. Microscopic studies confirm underground observations of the fracture sets.The most likely order of formation of the fractures is (i) "butt" cleats (ii) facc cleats (iii) shallow dipping faults (iv) mining induced cleavage. Three fracture sets apparently formed by tensiIe failure. Microscopy shows that the mining induced cleavage surfaces have preferred starting or lerminating points at the extremity of a "butt" cleat and a vitrite-dull coal band boundary. It is postulated that the induced cleavage begins at 'butt' cleats which behave as Griffith flaws under high compression around Leichhardt Colliery faces. Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas are associated with only those workings which are affected by mining induced cleavage and occur at or adjacent to working faces.

Newmont Mining has a large, integrated gold-mining operation in northern Nevada with several mines, stockpiles and processing facilities. There are more than 90 defined metallurgical ore types and more than 60 defined gold-recovery process options. Newmont developed a mine plan and process model to take better advantage of the available synergies at its Nevada mines. This plan includes a mixed integer and linear programming optimization tool. This system is maintained and operated by a Nevada planning group. Standard in-house planning software tools and methods have been implemented at all mine sites. These changes have allowed a reduction in mine engineering staff and have increased the effectiveness of mine planning.
