As environmental costs incurred by the mining industry become increasingly subject to critical analysis, new technology is necessary to ensure the further development of good relationships between the industry and community. Phytoremediation and phytomining are technologies that have the potential to capture the imagination and approval of the public. Phytoremediation , the in situ use of plants to extract heavy metals from a contaminated substrate, could offer an environmentally and cost-friendly alternative to traditional remediation techniques. Phytomining is the in situ removal of metals from a contaminated site or subeconomic orebody with the additional aim of recovering from the plant an economic amount of metal. Plants used in such operations, hyperaccumulators, accumulate large quantities of one or more target metals in their above-ground herbage. Upon harvesting and incineration, this plant material yields a low-volume, sulphide-free æbio-oreÆ, which can either be safely disposed of, or if the metal is of sufficient value, smelted. Investigations into the economics of phytomining nickel from ultramafic (serpentine) soils, showed that Alyssum bertolonii and Berkheya coddii could remove over 100 kg of nickel per hectare per annum from land with nickel concentrations well below the cut-off grade for conventional mining. It also appears possible to æinduceÆ the hyperaccumulation of gold into plants growing on gold tailings, or on stockpiled, low-grade gold ore. The plants used for phytoremediation and phytomining are useful colonisers as they are necessarily hardy and withstand extremes of salinity, metal toxicity and water stress that hinder the success of current revegetation procedures. As part of a rehabilitation operation, these plants may alter the geochemistry of a substrate making it more amenable to the growth of native species that should be used to restore a mining site to pre-operating conditions.

In the middle of 2000, BHP Billiton implemented a Six Sigma Plus business improvement program known as Operating Excellence. It was developed based on a business bottom line initiative to deliver 35 - 40c/share and was one of the BHP Billiton strategies to deliver $2 earnings per share and a longer term $40 share price (BHP share price). Cannington is a silver, lead and zinc mine owned and operated by BHP Billiton. Through implementing Six Sigma Plus Cannington wanted to:have in-house capabilities to change and improve; tailor for the needs of each business unit and department; have æSharing of its KnowledgeÆ as a tool for improvement and have a competitive edge across Cannington û to be better than our competitors; learn from and leverage off the successes of improved safety and prior business improvement efforts; and ensure networking and sharing of information have common measurement systems across all assets. As with most business improvement programs û Six Sigma Plus was met with some degree of skepticism, especially given the amount of resources involved. After 18 months, much of this skepticism has been replaced with enthusiasm as peopleÆs understanding and acceptance of its fundamental concepts are being realised. The idea behind Six Sigma Plus is that it combines sound technical solutions with high acceptance by those who need to work with or implement the change. The future vision for Six Sigma Plus is that it become part of what we do at Cannington û just like safety and environment û so that Six Sigma tools and methodologies are used in our every day work.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District is undertaking seismic upgrades of the Claremont Tunnel in the San Francisco Bay area. The tunnel carries treated water across the active Hayward Fault to supply a major metropolitan area. Studies indicate the tunnel could be severed by fault offset during a major seismic event. A design approach to achieve limited operation of the tunnel following fault displacement has been established and design details are currently being evaluated. This paper describes the project, the design approach, and summarizes significant construction constraints.

In 1998 the Matanuska-Susitna Borough formed the new port district at Point MacKenzie, known as Port MacKenzie, located directly across the Knik Arm from Anchorage. In 1991 PND Engineers Inc. (PND), working with the Matanuska-Susitna Borough manager and port director, envisioned a fill structure at Port MacKenzie with a 500-foot-long Open Cell? sheet-pile bulkhead face extending to EL -20 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) at the face. Now under operation the fill created 5.5 acres of tideland property using local materials for fill. The fill is protected from 2- to-3 foot-thick ice pans and 9 feet per second (fps) tidal currents by an envelope of armor rock. Construction required working in water with 30 to 40 feet of tidal variation. Construction required placement of frozen fill in water depths possibly exceeding 50 feet, creating real concerns about soil consolidation and long-term maintenance issues. A plan was prepared to consolidate the soils using Vibracompaction. Soil Density and consolidation were monitored during the work. In 2003 the port district and NPI, a wood chip export company, formalized an agreement to construct a deep water port facility at Port MacKenzie for cape-class bulk carriers. PND provided planning, studies, geotechnical investigation, design documents and construction inspection for a 500-foot-long trestle with a platform dockhead and dolphins providing 1,100 feet of dock face in EL -70 MLLW as shown in Figure 1. Design included installation of large-diameter spin-fin piles driven on a 2V:1H batter. Also included was a 300-ton tension test of smaller spin-fin piles.

Improving Pelletisation of Pyrite Cinder by High Pressure Roller Grinding As an important secondary resource for ironmaking, pyrite cinder is characterised by coarse particle size, low specific surface area, high porosity and poor surface activity, which leads to high bentonite dosage, low strength and too high moisture of green balls and high roasting temperature. In this paper, a study of improving the pelletisation of pyrite cinder containing feed by using high pressure roll grinding (HPRG) was presented, which aimed to improve the quality of green pellets and reinforce roasting performance pellets. It is shown that pyrite cinder is characterised by complicated mineral compositions dominated by haematite and metal sulfides, porous surface and middle class ballability, leading to higher balling moisture, higher bentonite dosage and higher firing temperature for pellet hardening. The pelletisation of pyrite cinder can be improved by high pressure roller grinding and blending with magnetite in the pellet feed. The former is probably ascribed to the increase in specific surface areas of pellet feed from 850 cm2+g to 1690 cm2+g when the pellet feed passes through roller twice. Good quality green balls and fired pellets can be made from feed comprising 40 - 60 per cent pyrite cinder and 60 - 40 per cent magnetite concentrate at small scale under the following conditions: 1.2 per cent bentonite, feed passing through roller twice at 7 per cent moisture at 1.5 ton pressure, balling at 13 per cent moisture for 13 min, preheating at 1050¦C for 12 min and firing at 1300¦C for 8 min. Green balls possess such properties as drop numbers of 6.5 times, compressive strength of 19.1 Newton and thermal shock temperature of 533¦C. Fired pellets are imparted high compressive strength of over 3000 Newton per pellet. Small scale tests have been proven by pilot scale tests that high grade fired pellets are made, assaying 63 per cent Fe and minor other impurities, such as sulfur and phosphorus except for copper content. The fired pellets made of three blends possess excellent metallurgical performance, such as reducibility index higher than 65 per cent, reduction swelling index lower than 15 per cent and low temperature reduction degradation lower than2 per cent. Especially the compressive strength after reduction is higher 719Newton per pellet.

The economic success and growth of any metropolitan region depends on mobility. Today, mobility between New Jersey and New York is threatened by a transportation system that cannot meet 21st century travel demands. The transportation bottleneck created by the Hudson River threatens the viability of one of the world?s great centers of commerce and culture. Fortunately, there is a solution: The Access to the Region?s Core Mass Transit Tunnel. The US$8.7-billion Mass Tran-sit Tunnel?s (MTT) new two-track line will double commuter rail capacity under the Hudson and create a new, state-of-the-art cavern station in Midtown Manhattan, with wide platforms, high-speed escalators and other features to improve riders? travel experience. The capacity and other benefits of the MTT project will launch a new era of prosperity for the region, just as the Pennsylvania Railroad did almost 100 years ago when it built the existing two, single-track rail tunnels that now form the sole commuter rail link between New Jersey and New York. The existing tunnels run from North Bergen, NJ, under the Hudson River to Pennsylvania Station at 33rd Street in Manhattan. Construction on the MTT, the largest public works project in the United States, is scheduled to start this year and continue through 2017. The MTT is ready to go to construction thanks to a major commitment of financial, engineering, project management and other resources from NJ TRAN-SIT, New Jersey?s statewide mass transit agency, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a bistate agency that operates the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, the George Washington Bridge and other major transportation facilities in New York and New Jersey. The project is also strongly supported by the state governments of New York and New Jersey, as well as that of New York City. The MTT is New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine?s number one transportation priority.

In the 1980s and?90s the gold mining industry in South Africa came under pressure from the continued poor dollar gold price and escalating Rand based costs, furthermore the external impacts on the industry were changing. Thus, the Chamber of Mines (COM) shifted its focus away from many historical areas of support towards the new industry challenges in safety and health, labour markets, environmental responsibility, mineral rights legislation and social responsibility. During 1997 the lack of funds and the changes facing the tertiary institutions were often subjects of discussion at the various sub-committee meetings. The Metallurgical Sub-committee of the Chamber Education Fund or the Sub-committee of Consulting Metallurgists as it was known identified the need for the funding structure to change with the times. Up to this time the Chamber of Mines operated an Education Fund that supported mining industry academic departments at various South African tertiary institutions; these funds were derived exclusively from the country?s gold and coal mines the basis of Chamber membership. Funds of less than R5 million per annum were available for distribution by the three disciplinary sub-committees of mining, metallurgy and geology.

Bureau of Mines in 1930 and 1931 made a study of the properties and characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) at the request of one of the largest users, in order to determine and eliminate the hazards attending its use.This report deals with the examination of absorbents for L.O.X. to (1) determine their most desirable and most undesirable characteristics, (2) to find ways and means of desensitizing absorbents to mechanical shock, and (3) to determine the effect that such desensitization of absorbents has on the explosive Characteristics of L.O.X.ABSORBENT MATERIALS The absorbent used in driving the Simplon Tunnel, the earliest project in which L.O.X. was used, was composed of crude petroleum, soot, and kieselguhr. During the World War, powdered cork, soot, sawdust, powdered straw, or other similar powdered materials were mentioned in the German military instructions for use of ""liquid air"" explosives. In his 1978 monograph ‘Lognormal-de Wijsian Geostatistics for Ore Evaluation’, Professor Danie Krige emphasized the scale-independence of gold and uranium determinations in the Witwatersrand goldfields. It was later established in nonlinear process theory that the original model of de Wijs used by Krige was the earliest example of a multifractal generated by a multiplicative cascade process. Its end product is an assemblage of chemical element concentration values for blocks that are both lognormally distributed and spatially correlated. Variants of de Wijsian geostatistics had already been used by Professor Georges Matheron to explain Krige’s original formula for the relationship between the block variances as well as permanence of frequency distributions for element concentration in blocks of different sizes. Further extensions of this basic approach are concerned with modelling the three-parameter lognormal distribution, the ‘sampling error’, as well as the ‘nugget effect’ and ‘range’ in variogram modelling. This paper is mainly a review of recent multifractal theory, which throws new light on the original findings by Professor Krige on self-similarity of gold and uranium patterns at different scales for blocks of ore by (a) generalizing the original model of de Wijs to account for random cuts; (b) using an accelerated dispersion model to explain the appearance of a third parameter in the lognormal distribution of Witwatersrand gold determinations; and (c) considering that Krige’s sampling error is caused by shape differences between single ore sections and reef areas.

The Umiray Angat 13,2 km long tunnel in Philippines have been bored through extremely variable and difficult ground conditions including a number of special events. In particular the following adverse conditions were found: faults in decomposed ground, high temperature rocks, extremely rapid and important convergence phenomena, water inflows up to 800 litres per second. The special El Nino climatic conditions caused a long dry season and lower the level of the lake that was granting the access by barge to the site under the minimum navigable level. Many equipment have had therefore to be transported to site by a 10 ton capacity helicopter, after having been partially dismounted. For the same reason most of the tunnel drive have been bored servicing the site by 1 ton capacity helicopters to transport materials, spares and personnel. In order to overcome the above geological and logistic problems several innovation were introduced and tested in this project. Despite all that difficulties the 13,2 km of tunnel were bored in about 24 months, with a global average of 500 m/month.

Advances in blasting technology and blasting practices have played a significant role in reducing fatalities and injuries. However, even with the decline of fatalities and injuries blast area security continues to be by far the leading factor in blasting accidents. Even though there continues to be an increase in the use of industrial explosives and blasting agents in the U.S.A., the decline in fatalities and injuries from blasting accidents has persisted.

A pressurizing system was designed and built to apply a radial pressure of 5.000 psi to rock samples. Samples of the Bradford, Weir and Kirkwood sandstones were subjected to radial pressures parallel and perpendicular to the bedding in the system and the changes in conductivity, porosity and permeability were deter-mined. Asymptotic decreases in conductivity, porosity and Klinkenberg permeability were observed over the 0- to 3,500-psi range. From these data, the increase of formation factor over the same range was calculated. The cementation exponent expressed in the Archie equation was found to increase with pressu,re. The rate of change varied from formation to formation. Only small differences were observed for samples taken parallel to the bedding as comnared to those taken perpendicular to it except for the Bradford sand. Above 3,500 psi the data are not good enough to tell if the properties continue to fall-off asymptotically or in a different manner. A possible explanation for the probable litnit of the asymptotic rate around 3,500 to 4,500 psi is that this represents the maximum pressure which the formations have unrdergone during their geological life as a result of burial. INTRODUCTION For many years measurements have been made in the laboratory of the properties of oil-bearing sandstones with little consideration being given to whether these properties had been changed when the samples were moved from their original position in the ground to the laboratory. Relatively little has been reported in the literature on the effect of pressure on the properties of sandstones. The changes in permeability for eight typical consolidated oil-bearing sandstone samples with overburden pressure (0- to 15,000-psi range) was presented by Fatt and Davis' in graphical form. In 1953 Fatt' also reported the relationship between porosity and overburden pressure for four typical consolidated oil-bearing sandstone samples (0- to 5,000-psi range). Fatt later described the changes of formation factor and porosity of 20 typical oil-bearing sandstone samples with overburden pressure changes (0- to 5,000-psi range) giving the values of the coefficients and exponents in the Archie' equation, and the more general Winsauer equation', where C, k and m are empirical constants, F is the formation factor, and + is the porosity. During the experiments of this investigation the core was contained in a neoprene rubber sleeve as shown in Fig. 1. It was held between two steel end members which were mounted in a steel cylinder. INTRODUCTION Generations of tunneling engineers had to fight not only against bursting rock and squeezing ground but also against the destroying power of water. Intrusion of groundwater into the tunnel opening affects the stability of the tunnel support system, reduces the safety of the traffic inside the tunnel, induces corrosion of installed equipment, and provides for creeping currents at electric facilities. Aware of these problems, engineers of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and their consultants opened the way for a new approach in sealing a tunnel. It was made possible by accepting a new method of tunnel construction scarcely applied in the U.S. before. This new technique, the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), provided the basis for the successful installation of a PVC-membrane between two separated shells of tunnel lining, and the carefully directed drainage of groundwater. Beside of the economic benefits already attained by applying the NATM for tunnel construction, the Authority now saves millions of dollars otherwise necessary to maintain the tunnel during its lifetime (Garrett, 1986; Setzer, 1986). But there is a large number of leaking tunnels built according to conventional methods, some of them facing severe problems jeopardizing the safe utilization of these structures. Recently developed methods indicate that even those tunnels can be rehabilitated without extensive costs by draining and sealing them afterwards. A road tunnel in the Austrian Alps provides the scene for a major attempt to convert one of those leaking tunnels into a dry structure.

Students of the modern blast furnace seem unanimously agreed that they are observing a major revolution in practice. Rather than changing construction and operation of the furnaces, most of the great advances now under way deal with the raw materials feed. Prepared burdens have gained increasing significance during recent years. Sizing, concentration, and agglomeration have all become bywords to greater production and reduced operating costs. The remarkable results with test furnaces in which self-fluxing sinter makes up part or all of the ore charge foretell even greater improvements. Other investigators have reported many of these advances, and it is enough to predict here that more and more operators will turn to the use of self-fluxing sinter. This change in the operator's requirements comes at a time when one major section of the iron ore regions, the Mesabi, is finding it difficult to maintain, let alone improve, the tonnage and grade of its shipping product. To meet the new demands with respect to quality and structure, the iron ore producers of this area turned first to screening, crushing, and concentrating intermediate ores. More recently, declining higher-grade reserves have led to multimillion-dollar investments in plants to treat the low-grade magnetic taconites.1,2 To yield a suitable concentrate, the Minnesota magnetic taconites must be ground to about 80 pct through 325 mesh, too fine to be charged directly to the blast furnace or to make acceptable feed to the sinter strand. The pelletizing process was developed to meet the structure requirements laid down by the blast furnace operators. Taconite producers are succeeding in their efforts just when the attention of the blast furnace man is being drawn to the great advantages of self-fluxing sinter.3 The taconite operators are ready with an alternative. Why not produce sclf-flus ing pellets? At the Hibbing laboratory of Pickands Mather & Co., where much of the early work was done that led to Erie Mining's 7.5-million ton taconite plant at Hoyt Lakes, Minn., preliminary investigations have been made. Present Taconite Operations: Details of this work will be clarified by a brief review of agglomeration practice in commercial taconite plants. After the taconite has been ground to about 80 pct through 325 mesh to liberate the magnetite grains, the ore is concentrated on magnetic separators, thickened, and filtered to about 10 pct moisture. This structure and moisture fit in closely with the conditions required to produce good balls. It has been found with taconite concentrates that at least 60 pct of the feed to the balling drum must be —325 mesh to obtain good ball compaction within reasonable time. The filter cake moisture usually permits a slight water addition at the balling drum, and further balling control is obtained by adding about 12 Ib of bentonite and 1 1/2 lb of soda ash per dry short ton of concentrate. These additives, and occasionally small quantities of fine coal, are thoroughly mixed with the filter cake ahead of balling. The swelling property of bentonite improves the green and dry strength of the balls so they can be handled without breakage until they are fired. Soda ash is added for pH control to insure maximum performance of the bentonite, and coal is added for more heat in the firing process when required. The balls, normally 3/8 to l-in. diam, are brought to a temperature of 2350" to 2500°F in the indurating furnace. Heat for this process comes from three sources: 1) fuel burned in the combustion chamber, 2) oxidation of the magnetite concentrates to hematite, and 3) coal added to the balls. Pellet strength is developed by grain growth and bridging and, if enough slag-forming constituents are present, by slag bonding. Conversion to hematite is usually close to 100 pct in the fired pellets. Batch Test Procedures: Initial studies of self-fluxing pellets were made by producing balls on a batch basis under carefully controlled laboratory conditions. This report is the 25th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations, and the 7th of these reports to be issued on a calendar-year basis.3 It reviews briefly work in progress during 1960, and furnishes references to publications by Bureau personnel during 1960 and also to a few older papers that were not cited in prior reports of this series. Details about some of the researches mentioned can be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes or in the further list in the Miscellaneous section; other phases of work are reported here for the first time and will be covered in more detail by later publications, Coal programs of the Bureau of Mines extend over the wide range of theoretical and applied studies indicated by the table of contents. Fundamental research on coal structure and on the properties of coal will, over a period of time, increase the general knowledge about coal Which scientists and engineers may use in answering practical questions and in solving problems in the mining and utilization of coal. More applied studies are conducted in connection with the developement and evaluation of new mining techniques and the effective processing and utilization of coal and of coal products. Health and safety activities, analyses of coal being mined, and technical advice and assistance to Federal agencies in connection with fuel and boiler-water problems are among the practical services handled by the Bureau.4 5

Calumet Division, Calumet & Hecla, Inc., whose operations are in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties, Mich., is a highly integrated and complex organization. This division operates mines, a railroad, a concentrating mill, a reverberatory smelter, and the auxiliary generating plants and shops to service these operations. In addition, it operates a sands reclamation plant, leaching plants, a foundry, and a machine shop that serves varied industries with castings and parts for many applications. Calumet & Hecla, Inc. has produced over 60 percent of all the copper that has been produced in Michigan since discovery of the ore in 1864, and in 1959 the company ranked eight among the country's producers with a production of 17,407 tons. To keep abreast of modern accounting systems developed elsewhere in industry and to combat increasing costs due to higher labor and supply costs, as well as increased costs due to deeper mines and lower grade ore, the company has developed a modern machine cost accounting system. This not only provides the usual bookkeeping and cost accounting facilities but offers accurate cost data for engineering evaluation of the mining operation. This system is credited with being instrumental in permitting continued operation of these high-cost mines in a period of increasing costs with no corresponding increase in the price of metal.

The kcICON design-build project in Kansas City, Missouri includes widening the existing roadway, improving interchanges and grade separation bridges, and replacing the Missouri River Bridge. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) typically utilizes steel H-piles and steel pipe piles as driven pile support for bridges. After bidding the kcICON project, the cost of steel rose significantly and the design-build contractor used an innovative approach to reduce foundation costs without significantly affecting the project schedule. The kcICON team conducted a value engineering evaluation of alternative foundation types for use at four grade separation structures. The result of the value engineering evaluation was selection of precast, pre-stressed concrete (PPC) piles as the preferred foundation alternative. Terracon developed a test program to evaluate the performance, capacity, and suitability of PPC piles at the site using a PDA and CAPWAP analyses. This paper presents the value engineering design, rationale for selection of PPC piles, results of the pile test program, and findings during production pile driving. The collaborative approach to the project by MoDOT and the kcICON team, combined with testing and a site-specific design approach, resulted in substantial savings for the design-build contractor.

This paper will present the results of an analysis of several abandoned coal mine projects and includes field data for over a dozen different reclamation projects recently completed in the state of West Virginia. The analysis was performed with the objective of summarizing and or classification of the environmental consequences with reference to the characteristics of the mining facilities (surface, underground, etc.). The analysis also addressed the itemized cost of remediation with respect to procedures, environmental concerns and time. The results of the analysis are that each abandoned coal mine site in West Virginia have/had many unique features and in most cases include a combination of environmental concerns that complicate comparisons. The study also revealed that the abandoned mine land program for mines abandoned prior to 1977, that is being financed by a tax on the production of coal, has produced many benefits for the state of West Virginia. This grant program administered by the Office of Surface Mining, has resulted in a high quality methodology of remediation that has been successful for many years in greatly minimizing and/or eliminating environmental concerns from abandoned coal mines.

The 20th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest will be held at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson, AZ, on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002. This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker is J. David Lowell, one of the preeminent exploration geologists of the past 30 years. Among his most recent discoveries is the world-class Pierina gold deposit in Peru, currently owned and operated by Barrick Gold. As representatives of mining heritage, the Hall of Fame will induct Howard Allen Twitty, Sr., and Bernhardt Rohe. Twitty was a respected public lands attorney. He made significant contributions to the mining industry by representing several major companies in many court cases. He was also the author of numerous papers on mining law.
