Fundamental studies on the transformations of iron oxides have been carried out and related to the solution conditions in the Becher Process. The results show that a number of iron oxide interconversion reactions occur in the aeration reactor with the products depending on the pH, temperature and oxidation potential of the aeration liquor. It is concluded that the lack of process control in the aeration reactor of the Becher Process significantly hinders the ability to predict and produce high quality single phase iron oxides of a consistent colour.

"Serrana’s concentrator, in Araxii, has capacity of producing approximately 800,000 tomes of phosphate rock per year, with a P205 grade of 36%, from ores grading between 13% and 14% P205. The annual mining rate is around 3.5 Mt and the apatite is concentrated according to the following sequence: crushing, grinding, desliming, flotation and low and high intensity magnetic separations.Two industrial flotation columns (3.0 m x 4.5 m x 14.5 m) were commissioned in 1993 as a replacement for circuits of barite and apatite fines flotation. In 1994, four additional flotation columns of the same dimensions were put into operation, replacing 42 Wemco mechanical cells (300 ft3 each), in the barite pre-flotation, coarse apatite (two columns) and tailings regrind flotation Circuits. Overall, 66 mechanical cells (300 ft3 each) were replaced by only six flotation columns, designed by Cominco Engineering Services Ltd - CESL.The present paper describes the stages of process development, pilot plant testwork and implementation of the industrial project, highlighting the most relevant aspects of each of them. The results achieved are related to improvements in flotation selectivity, gains in P205 recovery and better process control, resulting in better quality products and lower production costs. Other benefits included a decrease in flotation reagents, electrical energy and maintenance materials consumption. These factors contributed to a significant decrease in the cost of phosphate rock production at Serrana, in Araxa - M G."

When a fan or blower breaks down or becomes worn, customers have two choices. They can replace it or they can have it repaired. In the past, replacement was the preferred option, especially when the equipment was severely damaged or worn. Now, however, customers are discovering the benefits of repairing or rebuilding. Even when the cost of repair is more than 60 percent of the cost of a new fan, customers are choosing the repair option. The cost savings can range from 20 percent to 80 percent. In many cases, the quality of the repaired part or component will exceed the quality of the original. This is because repair engineers have an advantage over the original designers. They can see how the existing fan performed — or failed to perform — in a specific application.

This modern plant consists of a battery of 72 Otto Wilputte Compound Under-jet Ovens with extensive plant for the recovery by-products. The ovens produce 9000 tons of furnace coke per week together with some 17,000,000 cub. ft. of coke oven gas, which is used for heating purposes throughout the works and for heating the ovens.Coal is supplied from the, company's colliel'ies and is stored under a Coal Handling Bridge of 264 ft. span and 365 ft. overall, capable of handling 250 tons per hour. The coal storage space of 1600 ft. can. be extended to a maximum of 2800 ft.Preparation of the coal for coking involves fine grinding which is carried out as follows:-Coal is dumped from rail waggons on to a conveyer belt which delivers it to a 12 ft. x 22 ft. Bradford Breaker, with a capacity of 400 tons per hour. The coal, then approximately 4 in. in size, passes, to the mixing bins; and after careful blending is reduced in the,hammer mills to a fineness suitable for the ovens.The fire coal is elevated to the main storage bin over the battery for subsequent charging by electric larry car. The average cokingtime is 15 hrs. 36 mins. At the end of ,this period the doors, are removed and the coke pushed from the oven by a mm. The coke, is, then quenched with fresh, water and sent to the Blast Furnace in 50-ton Copper Waggons.The gas is exhausted from the ovens by Brown Boveri turbine, exhausters of 23,000. cub, ft, per min. capacity. Exhaust steam from these is used for various. purposes in the By-Product plant. After removing the last traces of tar by Electrostatic Precipitators', the gas is bubbled through sulphuric acid, the ammonia forming ammonium sulphate, which is subsequently washed, dried and bagged for sa,le as a fertilizer. The gas then goes to the Benzol Scrubber Towers, where benzol and other derivatives are recovered and later redistilled and purified. The cleaned gas is then piped to the main works for heating purposes, being used with tar to fire the steel furnaces, and also the soaking pits and reheating furnaces.BLAST FURNACES.The company is at present operating two Blast Furnaces of 800, and 1000 tons nominal daily capacity respectively. The competitive position of producers of industrial minerals depends upon the delivered price of their product. Freight charges are a major factor in the sales to consumers. A comparison of freight rates on movements of limestone and silica rock in the Pacific Northwest shows a wide variance in mills per ton mile for like hauls, thereby favoring some localities over others. Introduction: Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. Markets and Sources of Supply: Limestone has a number of uses in western Oregon and Washington. Among them are agricultural lime for the soils of the Willamette Valley and southwestern Washington; paper rock for the mills in such cities as West Linn, Oregon City, Newberg, St. Helens, and Salem, Oregon, and Camas and Everett, Wash.; chemical and metallurgical-grade limestone for the metallurgical plants centering around Portland, and the Tacoma-Seattle areas'; and sugar rock for the sugar refineries at Toppenish, Wash., and Nyssa, Oregon. As a follow-on to previous investigations, reduced treatment levels for the optimum fire retardant/preservative system were evaluated. An impregnation of 3.5 lbs/ft3 of Fyreprufe followed by 3.5 mils of Albi 107A plus an Albi 144 top coat provides adequate flammability and flame spread protection. However, there is a significant loss in compressive strength at this retention level, particularly parallel to the grain. A pilot-size pressure impregnation cell was installed for use in treating larger quantities of wood. Based on the optimum fire retardant/preservative treatment system - Fyreprufe/ACC impregnation followed by Albi 107A/144 intumescent paint - a model treatment pro¬cess was developed, capable of handling 3 million board feet per year. Associated annualized costs per thousand board feet (K bd. ft.) for treating 12" x 12" timber were calculated to be: Impregnation: $-63.00/K bd. ft. Coating: $112.00/K bd. ft. A literature search was conducted to identify materials and techniques suitable for a localized stench warning system for heated mine timbers. Based on this review, a number of stench warning concepts were developed. Those based on surface coating were given a preliminary laboratory evaluation.

The increasing pace of modern mining makes constantly greater demands upon the several contributing departments of rock breaking and transport, and rock-drilling, as the spearhead of attack, has received a great deal of attention with respect to both machines and steels. By a series of mechanical improvements, combined with the application of selected heat-treated alloy steels, the rock-drill has now been developed into a machine capable of rapid drilling and long service under severe working conditions. As a factoryproduct made under strict metallurgical control it is as foolproof as, say, the modern automobile, and, like its prototype, it can be kept in efficient operation by a minor amount of attention during use and by periodical adjustments and replacements.The same cannot be said, unfortunately, of the drills with which the machine is supplied; in conventional mine-shop practice these are made of the best tool steel shaped and heat-treated under the poorest of metallurgical conditions.The crudities of steel-shop practice have, in fact, always prevented the full exploitation of the steels available at any time, and even at the present day the general standard of treatment offers a contrast with the quality of the steels which moves the metallurgist to amusement, despondency or outrage, according to his temperament. Nevertheless, the tendency persists to meet the increasing demands of the rock-drill primarily by the use of still better steels, and secondarily by improvement, of the steel-shop practice. Athird type of development is the introduction of factorymade tools in the form of detachable bits and rods. "INTRODUCTIONMagnetic mill linings have been developed from an invention by Mr. Bertil Brandt, the originator of the Skega rubber lining. The OREBED magnetic mill lining is a concept in which rubber covered strontium ferrite permanent magnets are arranged on the inside wall of a mill shell so that they attract magnetically susceptible material be it ore, media or tramp, to form a protective layer over the magnets and to serve as an operating surface with indefinite life.Noranda Mines Ltd. through its associate Norcast Division of Noranda Metal Industries formed a joint venture with the inventors to market magnetic mill linings in North America. For the past twelve months trials have been undertaken in conjunction with Orebed Inc. to test and develop these linings for grinding mill applications at the Horne Concentrator. Two independent milling circuits are currently being operated, one treating a siliceous gold ore and the other a copper slag.This paper presents the results of the magnetic lining test programme to date."

"Explosions in bituminous coal mines are preventable. The combination of adequate ventilation, thorough rock-dusting, and water on the cutter bars of mining machines and of empty and loaded cars will certainly reduce the hazard to a minimum, if not remove it entirely. This is the attitude taken by the Woodward Iron Co. in lessening or removing the dust and gas explosion hazard from its Dolomite and Mulga mines.This report was made possible through the willingness of Frank H. Crockard, president of the Woodward Iron Co. to make records available and to authorize their publication for the benefit of the coal-mining industry.The compilation of these data and preparation of maps was facilitated by the cooperation of M. Heard, general superintendent of coal mines, J. B. Whatley, assistant general super-intendent of coal, and R. P. Whetmore, chief mining engineer.The Dolomite and Mulga mines are about 16 miles southwest of Birmingham, Jefferson County, Ala., on a company owned and operated railroad which connects ore mines, coal mines, coke ovens, and furnaces.In the Dolomite property there is a 30°, 860-foot, double-tracked slope for hoisting, three manway and air slopes and one air shaft, all in rock.At Mulga there is a 220-foot hoisting shaft, an air shaft and two manways, and material and air slopes, all in rock to the coal bed.The coal in both mines comes from the Pratt bed, which is the next coal above the Mary Lee bed in the Warrior Basin. The coal is horizontal or slightly undulating, with thickness varying from 36 to 72 inches and averaging 50 inches.The method of mining is essentially room-and-pillar with modifications for mechanized sections. The mines produced approximately 1,100,000 tons with 2,328,309 man-hours exposure n 1929 and 900,000 tons with 1,697,436 man-hours exposure in 1930.Through the work of the safety department the entire personnel in the coal mines, as well as in other departments, makes safety an essential part of efficient operation.Both mines are gassy; Dolomite produces about 334,000 cubic feet and Mulga about 919,000 cubic feet of methane every 24 hours.The ventilation maps, two of Dolomite mines (figs. 1 and 2) and one of Mulga (fig. 3) give as much of the details of ventilation as is practicable to put on maps of such scale. As will be seen from these maps there are two main ventilating fans in Dolomite mine and two in Mulga mine and the general direction of the air travel is indicated by long arrows to fan 1 and short arrows to fan 2 in each mine. Each fan has a gas or steam auxiliary drive and each mine has a complete fan and power unit ready for operation in emergency.In Dolomite, recently taken data show that fan 1 exhausts 82,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 3.2-inch water-gage pressure, with an analyzed methane content of 0.15 per cent, and fan 2 exhausts 115,500 cubic feet of air at 3.8-inch pressure and 0.10 per cent of methane. In addition, a Capell fan at No. 2 air shaft is a standby or emergency unit.In Mulga recently taken data show that fan 1 exhausts 83,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 3.0-inch pressure and 0.18 per cent of methane, and fan 3 exhaust 119,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 5.4 inch pressure and 0.35 per cent of methane. Fan 2 at No. 2 shaft is a standby or emergency unit for the Mulga mine.The ventilation is on a split system in both mines. All part split and total returns are measured, sampled, and analyzed weekly, requiring one man two days each week. During December, 1930, 77 samples were collected and analyzed in Mulga and 78 in Dolomite. Two weekly reports covering part of December, 1930, are given here so that they can be studied to show control of ventilation in the Dolomite and Mulga mines. In the event that a split sample shows more than 0.50 per cent of methane, immediate steps are taken to lower the explosive-gas content. The reports follow:"

Geomechanical conditions of mining operation are determined by varying in time and space mechanical properties and initial state of the rock mass, by geological and technological factors. We define adaptive mining technology as a technology capable of adjusting to changing geomechanical conditions of mining operation. The ongoing research at Moscow State Mining University consisting of laboratory, theoretical, and field investigations aims at the development of theoretical basis and methodology of the system of geomechanical support of adaptive mining technology for the bedded salt deposit in the Urals, mined by room-and-pillar method. This system of geomechanical support is capable of - dynamically assessing mechanical properties and state of the rock mass varying within the panel; - mapping mechanical properties of the rock mass within the panel; - assessing and predicting mechanical condition of load-bearing elements of the rock mass and its changes due to the adjustment of the parameters of mining operation considering the in-situ geomechanical conditions.

The two candidates in the upcoming presidential election in the United States each say that they have their own solution to the nation?s energy problems - solutions that will increase the amount of energy available, lessen the nation?s dependence on foreign sources and reduce the amount of pollution released to the atmosphere. Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama and Republican candidate Sen. John McCain both advocate research funding for coal-to-liquids and clean coal technologies. McCain also supports increased oil and gas drilling offshore. And Obama has even made some noises in that direction, although his plan leans heavily on the increased use of renewable energy sources. The energy debate is not new to this election. Congress and whichever party is in the White House has for years been trying to craft a comprehensive energy policy. One difference in this latest debate is that the increased use of nuclear energy has gained more attention. Current President George W. Bush has said he favors the increased use of nuclear power as part of the nation?s energy package. And McCain said he supports the building of more nuclear power plants. Obama has not said much about that. The American public is also showing signs of changing its stance on nuclear energy. To be sure, images of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl are still alive in some minds. However, the American public has said it wants cheaper energy and they want it produced more cleanly. With nuclear, the nation can have both. In the United States, nuclear accounts for slightly less than 20 percent of the electrical power used (see interview with Gary Steele of Energy Fuels on page 27). Globally, that figure is about 15 percent. And there are several nations that derive better than half of their power from nuclear sources. Add to that the world?s increasing need for more energy and the future of nuclear is bright.

The following paper describes the refining practice for the production of lead, silver and gold at the works of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd., Port Pirie, South Australia.The refinery is situated on the wharf frontage and is built parallel with it. The refinery occupies an area of approximately 3380 square yards. (Fig. 8)There are two buildings, one containing the softening and de-silverising sections, measuring 225 ft. x 57t ft., while the other building, which measures 225 ft. x 90 ft. covers the de-zincing, lead moulding, retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections. (Fig. 1)The retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections are completely isolated from the rest of the plant by strong small-mesh wire gratings welded to steel uprights. The dore parting plant and generator room are further isolated by a brick wall, built up to the roof. The two main buildings are steel structures, with outer walls and roof of "Robertson" corrugated sheeting; the side and end walls are open for some distance above the ground, and this, coupled with the high roof which is 50 ft. from ground level, ensures the free access of air and light. Conditions are such that operators work in a clear atmosphere.

"Transalloys is a silicomanganese (SiMn) producer located in South Africa, and uses only local manganese ores to produce SiMn alloy. The plant operates five open submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) with an annual capacity of 180 000 t of saleable SiMn.Maintaining tap-holes is critical for effective furnace operation, allowing proper drainage of the furnace with minimal operator interference. Using a claygun and drill arrangement installed at each furnace, tapping occurs every four hours. Tap-holes are maintained through mickey replacement and brick repairs. Three furnaces have SiC tap-holes and two have graphite tap-holes.This paper gives a review of SAF operation, furnace and tap-hole design, daily tapping operation, and maintenance practices for repairing tap-holes.IntroductionDefining tap-hole life cycle, Steenkamp et al., (2016) highlighted four main steps: installation during furnace relines, day-to-day operations, tap-hole maintenance, and tap-hole repair. The authors argued that the design of the tap-hole area should allow for all four stages in the tap-hole life-cycle. Design principles for each stage were presented using silicomanganese (SiMn) production as a case study. Here we present a further analysis of the case study by providing practical examples of how the tap-hole life-cycle is managed at Transalloys during the design, operation, and maintenance of submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) applied in the production of SiMn.BackgroundTransalloys is the largest producer of SiMn in Africa. Its smelter complex is based outside the town of eMalahleni, in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. Transalloys was commissioned in the mid- 1960s as a high- and low-carbon ferrochromium plant based on the Perrin process. In 1967 the plant was converted to SiMn production because of constraints in the ferrochrome market (Basson, Curr, and Gericke, 2007; Bezemer, 1995). Today, the installed production capacity is 180 000 t of SiMn annually. Plant operations consists of five SAFs (see ratings in Table I), operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (including maintenance), involving 280 permanent employees, with up to 120 contract employees on site at any given time."

The metal zinc has been around since only about 1400 AD. This may sound like a long time, but when compared to fellow base metals copper and lead, which were discovered in 5000 and 4000 BC respectively, it is evident that zinc is a fairly new kid on the block. This may also be the reason why many new facts and benefits of zinc are still being discovered. For instance, it has been discovered only in the last few decades that virtually no life on earth is possible without zinc. In this address it will be shown that zinc is not only very useful to mankind, but is in fact vitally important for all forms of life. It will be shown that zinc is natural, zinc is essential for life, zinc protects, zinc contributes to the well-being of society and that zinc is fully recyclable. It is therefore hoped, that by the end of this address, zinc will no longer be viewed only as the metal that is responsible for the nice colour of roofing sheets and steel buckets, but may indeed be man?s best friend.

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc.
