In a predrained gassy coalmine, ventilation control plays a secondary role to the longwall (LW) goaf drainage systems to safely manage panel return gas levels. Typically, the LW specific gas emission (SGE) estimation models provide anticipated goaf gas emissions and arriving at required gas drainage capacity for various coal production scenarios. A study comparing the various LW goaf gas hole spacing patterns with weekly production rates of up to 270 kt/w of an operating mine with high SGE rates (~20 m3/t) was carried out. The goaf capture efficiency of LW panels ranged from 64 per cent to 85 per cent. For the first time, gas content of upper seam data post LW retreat were used to verify the current SGE prediction models. This study has shown that an average of 50 m goaf spacing is optimal for management of high production retreat gassy LW panels in presence of multiple upper and lower seams with gas emission zone influence reaching up to 200 m above workings. Due to the horizontal stress direction related geotechnical issues, goaf hole failures just behind the LW face is a recurring challenge resulting in significant and immediate increase in LW panel return gas levels. This paper highlights the shortcomings of current SGE prediction models for goaf gas estimation, and evolution of 50 m goaf hole spacing embedded in design process in managing the LW tailgate gas levels.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. Moving groundwater is generally recognized as the most adversarial condition for ground freezing. Moving groundwater can occur due to natural or man-induced groundwater flow, but either way may result in freeze formation difficulties. History has shown that if the condition goes undetected, catastrophic failure of the frozen shaft or excavation can occur. The success of ground freezing under potentially flowing groundwater conditions depends on an evaluation of the likelihood for this condition; an accurate and early diagnosis, with a careful evaluation of freeze pipe temperatures and piezometer water levels; and timely reaction to mitigate the possible delays. Successful remedial measures have included the reduction of ground permeability by modifying the soil properties between the freeze pipes with various kinds of grouting, or increasing the freezing effect by adding freeze pipes and/or the use of liquid nitrogen as the freezing agent.

Pumpable cribs are being increasingly used in longwall tailgate entries and bleeders for roof support under abutment pressure. Their high peak capacity and confinement-controlled yield characteristics from reinforced-bags make them relatively safe and reliable standing supports for highly productive longwall panels. The pumpability of crib material over a long distance from the surface greatly reduces material handling and makes the underground installation more efficient and flexible. However, the performance of pumpable cribs is dependent upon crib properties, crib pattern, quality of installation, and geological and mining conditions. For proper crib selection and safe support design, it is critical to understand the basic technical requirements and performance of pumpable cribs in longwall tailgate entries and bleeders. Based on more than 10 years of experience using pumpable cribs for longwall standing support, the requirements and performance of pumpable cribs in longwall tailgate entries and bleeders under different mining conditions are presented. Experience shows that the load-displacement curve from full-scale lab testing is a good indicator of pumpable crib suitability for certain applications. Crib peak capacity, stiffness, and residual characteristics define its applicability to certain gate entries and bleeders under different cover depth. Crib pattern and spacing can be determined by abutment pressure level, roof, floor, and rib conditions, local roof stability, and ventilation requirements. To achieve proper in-situ performance, quality control of crib installation is also important.

In addressing the need for non-degree tertiary training, let us examine some recent reviews of engineering and geoscience education. The Finniston Report (1) criticised the formation of engineers in the UK and stated that this was largely due to the narrow British conception of engineering as a branch of applied science which militates against an effective marriage between theory and application. It also criticised the system for not giving students sufficient grounding in the synthesis of technical, human and financial considerations within their undergraduate courses. As we all know, this report has led to the restructuring of engineering education in the UK. More recently, a Review of the Discipline of Engineering was carried out in Australia by a committee chaired by Professor Sir Bruce Williams (2). The report stated that: Australia has a fairly good system of engineering education that should be made better. more should be done to develop the communication skills of both staff and students. more attention should be paid to changes in engineering practice and the human element in technology. there is a serious shortage of state of the art equipment in most engineering schools. female enrolments in engineering courses should be increased from the current level of about 7% to 20% by 1997. employers should develop a better understanding of the need for continuing education. staff in engineering schools should develop closer relations with employers of engineers. higher education institutions with engineering schools should give financial and other inducements to staff to increase the proportion of study leave or professional development leave spent working as engineers in the business sector. there is considerable room for improvements in the teaching process and in the development of evaluation schemes for assessing the teaching contributions of staff. In its recent report to the Council of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, the Task Force on Engineering Education(3) makes the following points: managerial, entrepreneurial, professional and interpersonal skills should be introduced and integrated into the undergraduate courses but studied in depth as part of continuing education. the continuing education policy of the Institution should be promoted and strengthened with all engineers required to pursue continuing education. the Institution should develop a comprehensive guide to continuing education available from universities, colleges and other public and private sector organisations.

The SVC500 combines the capabilities of a high-speed film camera, the convenience of a solid-state digital video camcorder, and the computing power of a ‘486 PC to provide a complete, standalone platform for high-speed image acquisition and analysis. The combined production value of natural abrasives, which consist of tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, and emery, decreased in 1986. Shipments of processed tripoli increased slightly in quantity and 20% in value. Production of garnet, a common iron- aluminum-silicate mineral, decreased 12% in quantity and value. There was a 4% increase in the quantity and an 11% increase in the value of refined garnet shipped when compared with 1985 shipments, a new record high. Production of crude special silica stone decreased 7% in quantity and slightly in value, and shipments of finished special silica stone products decreased slightly in quantity and increased 229% in value. Production of emery, an impure aluminum oxide, increased 77% in quantity and increased 269% in value of product mined and shipped. [ ]

The Burrell Can1 is a thin, steel, tubular shell filled with aerated concrete that is used as a roof support in coal mines. The Can height is always shorter than the mining entry, so it is capped with wooden timbers and wedges when it is installed. This combination of the Can and the wooden header is a standing support system that is designed to yield in a controlled manner and exhibit a constant yield, or elastic-plastic behavior. The Burrell Can is capable of withstanding 20 in or more of vertical convergence and 15 in or more of horizontal displacement. Because of this exceptional ability to sustain load through extended convergence and displacement, it is one of the most robust standing supports in use today. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted testing on seventeen Burrell Cans in 1995, during development of the support where the ratio of the height to the diameter, or the aspect ratio, was between 2:1 and 4:1. Based on the results of that testing, it was suggested that the standard aspect ratio of the Can be less than 5:1. This suggestion is intended to preserve the overall stability of the Can, which will help to maintain the initial stiffness and prevent load shedding. Recently, the necessity of the aspect ratio has been questioned, and this issue will be addressed in this paper. Since the initial development and introduction, more than 130 tests of the Can have been conducted at the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS), and 25 of those specimens had aspect ratios greater than 5:1. The 18-in-diameter by 10-ft-tall specimens had the largest aspect ratio, 6.67:1.However, the aspect ratio is not the only parameter that affects the performance characteristics of the Can. Multiple factors, such as the use of different wood species, the use of different header or footer configurations, and the use of pedestals, as well as biaxial loading conditions can also decrease the stiffness and capacity of the Can. Data from full-scale tests that include these other factors are analyzed to show that the initial stiffness is primarily affected by the roof and floor contact configurations. Furthermore, load shedding is more likely to occur or begin earlier when the aspect ratio is greater than 5:1 and one or more of the other factors are present.

The metallogenic map of New Zealand shows the distribution of metallic mineral deposits, according to type and size, in relation to their geological setting. The major purpose of the map and accompanying 200-page monograph is to summarise the distribution, modes of occurrence and origins of the metallic mineral deposits of New Zealand. The map demonstrates the prospectivity of New Zealand for metallic minerals, particularly gold, silver, iron, and titanium. Information on each deposit is summarised in index tables based on major geotectonic units or deposit/commodity type. The mineral deposits are arranged and discussed in relation to tectonostratigraphic and tectonomagmatic units or terranes, under broad geotectonic divisions of the Paleozoic to Mesozoic Western Province, the late Paleozoic to Mesozoic Eastern Province, the mid Cretaceous to early Tertiary rifting phase, and the late Cenozoic Kaikoura Orogen. Regions or areas of marked concentration of mineralisation are recognised as metallogenic subprovinces or districts, namely: eastern Northland (Hg), the Hauraki Goldfield (epithermal Au-Ag-Pb-Zn-Cu), the west coast of the North Island (shoreline placer Fe), east Nelson (podiform Cr), west Nelson (porphyry Mo), the West Coast of the South Island (shoreline placer Ti), west Nelson-Westland (placer Au), Reefton (mesothermal Au-quartz veins), and Otago (placer Au and mesothermal Au-W quartz veins).

When the price of gold cracked the US$9.60/g(US$300/oz) mark last year, the gold-mining industry began to crank up again. This followed several years of gold prices that had languished in the mid-200s. Existing mines increased production and mines that had lain dormant for many years were getting second looks. The United States still produces a large amount of gold. But not much of the new production is coming from that country. Instead, strict environmental regulations still have companies wary of trying to invest the millions needed to start a new mine or expand existing ones. And after years of studies and negotiations between legislators, environmental interests and the mining industry, the United States still has not crafted a new mining law.

The literature dealing with the electrical conductivity of solid dielectrics, including all its aspects and its relationships to other physical properties of these materials, is extensive and scattered in many books, phamphlets, and periodicals. It is believed that most of the important contributions to this field up to October 1943 have been listed and abstracted in this circular. Also included are some general references on static electricity. Methods of removing static charges are described; methods of and conditions for measurements of resistivity are discussed; equations for the calculation of resistivity are given; and methods of resistance measurements in Situ are reviewed. Data on the variations of resistivity with changing conditions as well as explanations for them have been collected, and three tables showing the resistivity of various dielectrics at different humidities are included. The appendix contains a short development of the mathematical formulation of the charging and discharging currents due to interfacial polarisation. There are many situations, however, in which direct low-resistance grounding cannot be used, either because the charged bodies are insulators or are inaccessible, or because contact to a ground lead might give rise to a hazardous spark. If the charged body is a conductor, contact made to a neighboring conductor, even though the latter be insulated from ground and of relatively small capacitance, may also result in the occurrence of an incendive spark. In such instances, static electricity can sometimes be removed most satisfactorily by means of strong atmospheric ionization produced by radioactive material, X-rays, ultraviolet light, or A. World HCFeCr production is 6.0 million tonnes. Correspondingly 1.1-1.6 t slag / t FeCr is produced depending on the raw material basis. Essentially all FeCr is produced in submerged arc furnaces, while the role of competitive technologies like DC is limited. In all furnaces fluxes are used to optimize the slag composition. Vital characteristics are smelting point, electric conductivity and viscosity. The main components of FeCr slag are SiO2, Al2O3 and MgO. Additionally it consists of Cr-, Fe-oxides and CaO. Granulated slag and/or classified slag products are produced depending on the production process. The slag products are mainly marketed in road and civil construction purposes but also in producing refractories. Normally crushed and screened slags are produced simultaneously when recovering alloy. The leachate of slag products is low and performance results are excellent. Slag products successfully replace natural sand and macadam. Generation of waste is essentially reduced. Producing and using slag products are described as BAT-technology and it is an essential environmental aspect. Outokumpu Tornio Works produces 320 000 t FeCr-slag/a. This paper deals with formation of slag in smelting process, its chemical composition, physical and structural characteristics, utilization and product specifications as well as environmental aspects. The slag products are standardized and CE marked. Additionally the role of slag in smelting and alloy recovery is reviewed in this paper.

"Zn-Pb sulfide mineralization at Abbeytown mine and Twigspark quarry comprise the only known car¬bonate-hosted base metal sulfide deposits in the Sligo syncline, northwest Ireland. Limestone sedimentation occurred uniformly throughout the region during the Early Carboniferous (Mississippian) as observed by field relationships and lithofacies; however, petrographic and stable isotope evidence indicate that host-rock dolomitization occurred under different conditions at localities to the west and east of the Ox Mountains inlier, suggesting significant uplift and geologic isolation of these areas prior to dolomitization. Localized fluid flow systems are thought to be responsible for sulfide mineralization and associated epigenetic carbonate cements. West of the Ox Mountains inlier at Abbeytown, evidence of three geochemically distinct fluids are observed: (1) a lower-temperature, lower-salinity fluid (70°-130-°C, 4-9 wt.% equiv. NaCl); (2) a lower-temperature, higher-salinity fluid (70°-140°C, 15-24 wt.% equiv. NaCl); and (3) a higher-temperature, moderate-salinity fluid (165°-220°C, 8-14 wt.% equiv. NaCl). Similar fluid types were observed at the Twigspark deposit. The source of the higher-salinity fluid is likely seawater evaporated to near the point of halite precipitation. The higher-temperature fluid is thought to have been derived from deep circulation of basinal brines. It is speculated that mixing of the higher-salinity fluid with the high-temperature fluid was vital for ore formation at Abbeytown because fluid inclusions in sphalerite have homogenization temperatures and salinity values that fall along a mixing trajectory of these end member fluids. Also, areas where the high-salinity end member fluid is absent are barren of sulfides. Less complex fluid systems are indicated for sites east of the Ox Mountains inlier where no sulfide mineralization was observed. Data from base metal sulfide prospects in northwest Ireland indicate no connection with the regionally extensive flow system thought to be responsible for Zn-Pb deposits throughout the Irish Midlands.Les minéralisations en sulfures de Zn-Pb de la mine Abbeytown et de la carrière Twigspark sont les seules gîtes de métaux usuels à encaissant carbonaté connus dans le synclinal de Sligo, au nord-ouest de l’Irlande. This paper discusses the Installation of a Vibwall for the Cardiff Bay Barrage Project Wales, UK, by Kvaerner Cementation Foundations. Only the second use of the technique in the UK the wall was successfully placed to a depth in excess of 20 metres, in unique and challenging conditions. The installation of the Vibwall was a technical success, but not a financial one. The use of the technique was at its "limits" and this paper recommends some of the controls essential in the carrying out of such work in the future.

Although lifetime estimates for sulfate reduction based on total substrate carbon typically range from 20 to 30 years, field and laboratory experiments showed that rates of sulfate reduction decreased over time as readily available organic material was consumed. When the rate of acid input exceeded the rate of sulfate reduction, alkalinity was removed from the substrate, pH decreased and metals increased. Output pH increased from 4 to over 6 after the system was shut down for several weeks and the rate of acid input was reduced. Successful long term treatment requires a design based on the input pH and the long-term organic decomposition rate.

Four friction pile load test programs, including 23 tension tests and 9 compression tests, have been performed as part of the Central Artery/Tunnel Project in Boston, Massachusetts. The tests, performed on both precast, prestressed concrete (PPC) piles and steel piles, yielded the following adhesion values: [Soil Type Clay Clay Glacial Till Interbedded Sand and Clay Interbedded Sand and Clay Pile Type PPC Steel Steel Steel PPC Adhesion (psf) 610 to 1,200 230 to 900 220 to 550 680 1,280 ] The adhesion appears to be affected by differences in pile material type, with PPC piles having higher adhesion than steel piles. However, part of the apparent difference for the clay may be due to differences in time between driving and testing. The significant range of test data means that the need for site specific testing to determine or verify design values of adhesion should be considered during design. Creep rates at loads near failure ranged from about 0.02 to 0.18 inches per log cycle of time, with most values in the range of about 0.04 to 0.08 inches per log cycle of time.

The Bathurst mining district is located near the town of Bathurst on the north shore of the province of New Brunswick in eastern Canada. This region is the northeasterly extension of the Appalachian mountain system. The area is heavily forested and covered with a fairly uniform layer of glacial gravels and boulder clay. The relief is low, increasing to a few hundred feet in the north west and several hundred feet in the extreme southwest. Thus, rock outcrops are scarce and occur mostly along streams and ridges. These factors made conventional prospecting difficult and resulted in the district becoming an excellent place for the application of regional geological studies, air photo techniques, airborne and gound geophysical methods and soil sampling. Late in 1952, The Brunswick Mining and Smelting Company discovered a very large base metal sulphide body presently known as their No. 6 orebody. Early in 1953, another and even larger sulphide body was discovered and is known as the No. 12 ore body. Mining exploration was very active thoughout 1953 and in 1954, The American Metal Company discovered the orebodies which have been developed into The Heath Steele 'Mines. The location of these deposits is shown on figure one. In the latter part of 1954, The Anaconda Company became interested in the district and decided to make a geological study of this new and promising base rrietal area. The following paper presents the story of the application of modern geological and geophysical techniques, leading to the discovery of a large sul-nhidp liodv. The Bathurst district is generally underlain by the Tetagouche group of Middle Ordovician rocks.
