In 2002, many in the mining industry — companies, academia and government — realized that the industry would soon be facing a serious shortfall in salaried and hourly employees. Depending on whose numbers are to be believed, 20 percent to 50 percent of current mining professionals are expected to retire within five to 10 years. And there are not enough students currently enrolled in mineral-related programs to the fill the need. Part of the impending shortage in professionals was brought on by the industry’s negative image, which discouraged students from enrolling in mining engineering programs. Another part was that the industry was in the doldrums and was seen by the public as a dying industry.

At the Palabora Mine, the transition to caving 400 m below the bottom of the 800 m deep pit resulted in a slope failure of the North wall that began in 2003, and is still mobile. This failure can be explained by the daylighting into the cave zone of a prominent joint set. The failure was modelled by the 3-dimensional code 3DEC, which is capable of modelling the nonlinear behaviour of discontinuum materials with large displacement.

Mineral liberation data are routinely obtained for a wide variety of applications, including ore characterization and characterization of various metallurgical test products obtained in bench-scale laboratory testwork. Newmont Mining Corporation owns several properties in the Carlin Trend containing refractory gold ores. These ores are generally difficult to treat and have to undergo several processing stages for gold recovery. At Carlin?s Mill 5 operation, flotation is used to pre-concentrate some of these difficult ores to produce a sulfide concentrate to feed the roaster. It is of interest from a flotation perspective to be able to study the floatability of pyrite, arsenopyrite and arsenian pyrite, since these minerals all have different quantities of gold associated with them, and have to be recovered to ensure a successful separation has been achieved. In this paper, a detailed MLA study on several Carlin ores was undertaken on samples from flotation tests, using air or nitrogen as flotation gas, specifically to study the differences in floatability characteristics, which ultimately impacts overall gold recovery. Abstract. Study on nonlinear damage localization process of rocks under water chemical corrosion is a more interesting topic in rock mechanics research world widely. It is very important in estimating long term stability of rock engineering, design of nuclear waste repository and its performance estimation, geothermal and petroleum development. This paper reports that new development of study on the topic, including methodology, results of meso-mechanical test, real-time CT scan test and acoustic emission test, temporal fractal behaviors, neural dynamic modeling and chemical-induced damage law, etc. This paper also discusses the research directions of the topic in the near future. Zusammenfassung. Untersuchung zum durch die chemische Corrosion induzierten Schaedigungsprozess ist einer der Trends im Gebiet der Felsmechanik. Sie ist zugleich ein sehr wichtiges Forschungsprojekt u.a. fuer geotechnische Langzeitstabilitaetsanalyse, Langzeitsicherheit eines Endlagers, Erdwaerme- und Erdoelfoerderung. Dieser Aufsatz stellt die neusten Entwicklungen in den folgenden Teilgebieten zusammen: Untersuchungsmethoden, Laborversuchsergebnisse der Mikromechanik, der Computer-Tomographie und der akustischen Emission, zeitabhaengige Fraktaleigenschaften, Modelle fuer die Nervendynamik sowie Modelle fuer chemie-induzierte Schaedigungen. Zum Schluss werden kuenftige Forschungsschwerpunkte bzw. –richtungen diskutiert. Résumé L’étude du processus de la localisation de l’endommagement du à l’érosion chimique est un thème d’actualité pour la mécanique des roches. Elle est également un sujet de recherche d’importance dans l’évaluation de la stabilité à long terme des ouvrages rocheux, l’analyse du system de stockage des déchets nucléaires et l’évaluation de son comportement, l’exploitation de l’énergie thermique et pétrolifère, etc. Cet article présente le développement actuel dans ce domaine, incluant la méthodologie d’étude sur le processus de la localisation de l’endommagement dû à l’érosion chimique, l’analyse des essais mécaniques avec l’observation microscopique, du balayage en temps réel (CT), et de l’émission acoustique. On aborde ainsi modèle des caractéristiques fractural du temps, le modèle de la mécanique dynamique neural, ainsi que la loi de comportement d’endommagement dû à l’effet chimique. Enfin, les perspectives relatives à ces études sont présentées et discutées.

The traditional measure of Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) as a measure of improvement in safety performance is recognised as inadequate and misleading, lulling managers into believing that safety is improving. It is a reactive measure, and steadily declining LTIFRs around the world have failed to be accompanied by a similar reduction in the fatality rate. This paper confronts the industry with the attitudes of some mining managers, such as one that allowed fatalities to occur in the case of a gold mining company at a rate of one death per 150 000 ounces of gold produced while claiming their safety record has improved, as shown by a falling LTIFR, and viewing fatality reductions as a long-term goal instead of an immediate priority. A quantum shift in management attitudes is required to focus on proactive measurements to detect the indicators of an impending disaster, and to predict conditions conducive to fatalities. Corporate CEOs are challenged to attend the funerals of all workers killed in the workplace. CEOs who fail to attend such funerals send a message to employees that the CEOÆs priorities lie elsewhere, and that profits take priority over workersÆ lives. The dichotomy of whether mining companies are run for the benefit of shareholders or whether companies owe social responsibility to the community is examined. The role of individual responsibility for personal safety is examined, together with the psychology of employees in the mining industry. A number of proactive measurable indicators are suggested to stimulate discussion on developing robust measuring tools to predict and therefore prevent fatalities.

This report presents the results of an investigation begun by the Government in the summer of 1907, the investigation being started under the immediate supervision of Dr. J. A. Holmes and continued under him as director after it was transferred to the Bureau of Mines in 1910, the field studies being completed in the spring of 1912. The purpose of the investigation was to obtain information on the origin of the inflammable gases in coal and the conditions under which they occur. It was especially intended to ascertain whether there was any relation between the occurrence of gas and the structural or other geologic features of the coal beds. To this end many months were spent in mines and much time was devoted to the examination of mine maps, bore-hole records, and other data made available by the kindness of various coal companies. Two fields of work were selected-one in the northern anthracite basin of Pennsylvania, where the beds are considerably flexed, and the other in the southern part of the bituminous coal field of Illinois, where the beds lie nearly horizontal. In order to take advantage of results of previous investigations of the same general subject, an extended examination was made of reports of various investigators in Europe and America. A digest of the information obtained from these publications is included in the first part of this report, which constitutes an introduction to the discussion of the conditions governing the occurrence of inflammable gas in coal beds.

In spite of all the work that has already been done on ferromanganese deposits, studies on the Atlantic Ocean occurrences are still in their infancy and there is a clear need for investigations concerning the origin, distribution, and resource potential assessment of these deposits. Nevertheless, studies already carried out on northeast Atlantic seamounts indicate the general presence of ferromanganese deposits of hydrogenetic origin, i.e. deposits formed by direct precipitation of colloidal, hydrated metal oxides that are scavenged from the water column on hard-rock substrates. The hydrogenetic precipitation promotes the enrichment of ferromanganese crusts in many trace metals, most of which are of economic interest, such as Co, Ni, Te, rare earth elements, and platinum-group elements and thus ferromanganese crusts are considered an important metal resource.

Energy consumption and wear of grinding media and liners are the major cost factors in milling plants. Since the beginning of the last century, much effort has been directed at the prediction of the power draw as affected by the mill operating conditions. This paper explores the prediction of the liner wear using the discrete element method (DEM). A mathematical model taking into account adhesion, abrasion and impact wear which occur in dry mills is derived in order to predict the loss of material on liners. The mathematical model is implemented in the DEM code using an objective function in order to produce realistic simulated profiles. The US economy and the demand for nonfuel minerals grew at lower rates in 1995 than in 1994. Demand for major metals, such as aluminum, copper and steel, was mixed but relatively stable. The building industry, including highway construction, helped to support modest overall growth in demand for industrial minerals. The value of processed materials of nonfuel mineral origin produced in the United States during 1995 was estimated to be $395 billion, an increase of almost 10%compared with 1994 (Fig. 1). The estimated value of US raw nonfuel minerals production during 1995 was $38billion, about 7% more than in 1994. The value of US minerals production has increased in 30 of the last 35years.

"Packaged fuel" is the trade name applied by the industry to a product consisting of coal screenings and a binder compressed into 3 -or 4-inch cubes and wrapped (six or eight in a package) in sturdy paper and sealed with gummed tape. Parry describes the product in greater detail and distinguishes clearly between packaged fuel and briquettes. The industry developed from the desire of retail coal dealers to improve utilization of the relatively large quantities of slack sizes that result from the degradation, during shipping and handling in the yard, of friable coal, particularly Pocahontas coal. During the war an attempt was made to apply this technique to anthracite fines, and a recent publication of the U. S. Bureau of Mines reported the results of physical and combustion tests on packaged fuels containing anthracite fines. References made in this report to the previous investigation on packaged fuels containing anthracite represent data or conclusions presented in Report of Investigations 3882. This investigation was conducted as a continuation of the previously reported studies and consisted of physical and combustion tests of packaged fuels made from high-volatile bituminous coal, as well as the low-volatile bituminous coal ordinarily used in the industry, to determine their relative suitability for domestic firing. Particular attention was given to the smoke-producing properties of the packaged fuels because of the increasing importance of the prevention or reduction of smoke from hand-fired domestic heating plants resulting from the widespread enactment of smoke-prevention ordinances.

Central Alaska contains a wide variety of pre-, syn-, and post -accretionary mineral deposits that are related to the growth and evolution of the north-west North American continental margin. Withinpre-accretionary terranes, the Devonian-Carboniferous, carbonate platform-hosted MVT zinc-lead deposits of the Kandik and Reef Ridge districts in central Alaska, and the Devonian-Mississippian volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) polymetallic deposits of the Bonnifield, and Delta mineral belts of eastern Interior Alaska have received the most exploration interest to date. Syn-accretionary rift related, mafic and ultramafic sill swarms and zoned plutons of the Kluane-Nikolai igneous belt are currently being explored for Ni-Cu-Co-PGE deposits. Syn-accretionary granitoid complexes in the PurcellMountains, Illinois Creek, and Sitylemenkat areas have been explored for uranium-REE-gold, and tin-silver mineralization respectivelyPost-accretionary granitoid intrusions and associated volcanic fields that range in age from mid-Cretaceous to early Tertiary contain significant gold-silver-polymetallic resources in the East Central Alaska, Hogatza, and Kuskokwim Mineral belts. Collectively the three main post-accretionary plutonic/volcanic belts of central Alaska are part of the Tintina Gold Province, where exploration since 1990has identified about 848 tonnes gold.

MFIRE is a computer simulation program that performs normal ventilation network planning calculations and dynamic transient-state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions. The program is useful for the analysis of ventilation networks under the influence of natural ventilation, fans, fires, or any combination of these. MFIRE simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters such as the development of new mine workings or changes in ventilation control structures, external influences (varying outside temperatures), and internal influences (fires). Extensive output enables detailed, quantitative analysis of the effects that the alteration will cause to the ventilation system. The program was developed at Michigan Technological University (MTU), Houghton, MI, with support from the Bureau of Mines. A personal computer (PC) version of the program was completed under contract for the Bureau by MTU. The purpose of this report is to document the installation and use of the PC version of the program MFIRE.

The synthesis process of BaTiO3 from TiO2 and BaCO3 in the molten NaOH-KOH at 350oC was studied by the A.C impedance technique. The A.C. impedance of molten NaOH-KOH (xNaOH = 0.36) and the variation of the conductivity of the salt with time during the synthesized process were measured. The synthesized reaction of the BaTiO3 and the decomposition reaction of BaCO3 are fast and were finished in 10min. The interaction between TiO2, BaO and BaTiO3 and the molten salt was confirmed by the variation of the conductivity.

Monotonous flood planes flanked either side of the road as we drove in the embassy car from the airport to downtown Seoul. We crossed the brown waters of the Hann River, meandering over mud flats. A great, gnarled tree bore beautiful fall colors of gold. "That is a Ginko Tree, the oldest living fossil, probably a hundred million years old;" said Jean W. Pressler. Compared to other cities of the Far East, the traffic in and around Seoul was sedate. Few motorcycles or bicycles, and little superfluous horn tooting. "This is the best season in Korea. We have long beautiful springs and falls," said Pressler, chief of the mining branch of USAID, and he continued with a briefing on the country.

The appraial of producing properties and profitability ntzalysis of a proposed capital expenditure are based on the same principles. In both problems a projection of future cash income is. cornpared to one or more capital expenditures. Several different methods have been in use either to compute a price to obtain a given earning power on the investment or to compute the earning power which will result from a given capital expenditure. One of these, the "Average Annual Rate of Return" method, computes in a simple manner the ratio of the present value of the future earnings after amortization to the present value of the undepreciated balances of the investment over the life of a project. This method, not well known generally, appears to have some rather unique advantages in reducing the computation work required, eliminating trial-and-error solutions, and providing a more accurate answer when applied to oil industry investments subject to the unit-of-production basis of amortization. Its derivation is given and its versatility demonstrated in the solution of certain everyday investment problems. A number of charts, useful in applying this method to profitability analysis and appraisal work, are provided. The current trend in the market values of producing properties is shown. INTRODUCTION Making sound capital expenditure decisions requires an objective means of measuring the productivity of individual investment proposals. Since the best measure of the economic worth of such proposals is their ability to produce profits, it is common practice to grade proposed capital expenditures according to their annual earning power as a percentage of the outstanding capital. The same principles which govern the determination of the rate of return of proposed capital expenditures also apply generally to the problem of determining the appraisal value or purchase price of income-producing oil and gas properties. Both problems are of prime importance in the producing phase of the oil business, where management is faced daily with decisions to drill or not to drill certain development wells, or with the determination of the appraisal value of producing properties. The common feature in both problems is that a projection of future cash income is compared with a known or estimated capital investment to determine itsiearning power or annual rate of return. In the case of development drilling, the cost of the proposed well can usually be estimated with a fair degree of accuracy and the problem consists of finding the rate of return on the invested capital. In the case of appraising producing properties, on the other hand, the desired rate of return is usually known in advance and the problem consists of determining the purchase price which, for the given income projection, results in the fequired rate of return. Certain accounting procedures common to the oil and gas producing business make these two problems and their solutions somewhat different from corresponding problems in other industries, and, in certain ways, simpler. The main difference is in the amortization policy which, for oil and gas production, is frequently on a unit-of-production basis, compared to the amortization on a time basis used in many other industries. The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly the various methods currently in use for the measurement of productivity of invested capital in producing properties and, in more detail, the derivation and application of what will be called the "Average Annual Rate of Return Method". This rather interesting and not too well known method has some very definite advantages in the solution of many problems common to the oil industry. For the sake of simplicity, federal income tax considerations have been disregarded in the examples used, since they do not affect the principles involved. The use of the production payment route in the sale or purchase of producing properties, which has been amply covered in many other publications, has also not been included in this analysis. METHODS FOK MEASUKING THE EARNING POWER OF INVESTED CAPITAL, Of the many different methods used to measure the earning power of invested capital, four are applicable to oil or gas production ventures. Depending on whether these four methods utilize one or two interest rates, and whether a fixed amortization pattern is used, they may be classified as follows.

Geotechnical conditions in the Lochiel Deposit are somewhat unusual, and thus geotechnical and hydrological investigations have assumed a high priority. The cost of mining the deposit has been shown to be very sensitive to geotechnical design parameters, and it is now seen to be of paramount importance to establish a high level of confidence in the design parameters used for mining cost estimation. Geotechnical investigations in the Lochiel Deposit reached a crossroads in 1985, when there appeared to be several quite different and equally attractive routes to follow to establish a satisfactory level of confidence in geotechnical mine design parameters. Three main options were identified, referred to as the No Further Work Route, the Drill and Trench Route, and the Trial Pit Route. The No Further Work Route was ruled out as being technically unsound and as satisfying none of the Electricity Trust of South Australia's (ETSA's) or the State Government's requirements.
