Grade control in open pit mining requires the specification of dig limits that account for mineral grades, economic costs, and selectivity of mining equipment. Visual identification of ore rock types is ideal, but this is not always possible in lower grade disseminated deposits where ore/waste contacts are not visually discernible. In this case, conventional grade control practice consists of a two-step procedure (1) create a map of mineral grades at some selective mining unit scale, and (2) determine practical ore-waste boundaries or dig limits on the basis of the gridded block grades or assay information. This procedure is laborious, depends on a subjective assessment of where the boundary should be, and may be economically sub-optimal. We pose the determination of dig limits as an optimization problem and solve that problem with the technique of simulated annealing. Simulated annealing has the unique advantage of being able to combine multiple non-linear constraints into a single objective function. We use maximum profitability and the ability of the equipment to mine the proposed dig limits as constraints in the determination of optimal dig limits. We require a map of expected profit for eah block. Geostatistical techniques are recommended, for mapping expected profit but not necessary. Geostatistics will provide a quantification of the uncertainty in the grades within rock types using all available blasthole samples and exploration drilling. Some variant of L-optimal estimation or kriging can be used to determine the block-by-block classification that is economically optimum. We also need the expected profit for each block. It is unrealistic to assume free selection, that is, each block cannot be extracted independently of its neighbors. The optimal balance of ''accepting dilution'' and ''wasting ore'' is achieved to maximize profit subject to equipment constraints.

This is the final report of work accomplished during 1973-75 under U. S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0242015, "System for Handling Underground Mine Supplies and Materials." The purpose of the contract was to develop a mechanical device which could safely perform handling tasks that are normally done manually in underground bituminous coal mines. The report discusses studies leading to construct-ion of a battery-operated, three-wheel vehicle with a six-degree-of-freedom manipulator. Supportive design studies included collection and analysis of production, manual functions, and injury data on the underground bituminous coal mining industry. Transfer tasks in section storage and working places were the prime candidates for mechanical handling. Functional specifications were developed for two handling devices (one to handle existing unit loads and one to handle repackaged unit loads) and for a vehicle to mount the handling device. Design concepts for nine different handling devices were developed and a cost/benefit evaluation made for each. Detail design, capital and operating costs, and method improvement savings data were developed for two battery-operated vehicles and for two different manipulators. The three-wheel vehicle with anthropomorphic manipulator was chosen for development.

For processing copper, continuous converting has been successfully employed in a variety of locations, but for nickel, there has yet to be a successful commercial implementation of continuous converting technology. At Inco?s Copper Cliff smelter, there are specific requirements for the production of Bessemer matte relating to downstream processing that makes continuous converting for nickel mattes even more challenging. The nickel carbonyl refineries require very low iron levels in the matte, and the sulphur deficiency must be carefully controlled such that the appropriate quantity of PGM-rich metallics are produced from matte separation. The present paper outlines continuous converter technologies that have been implemented in copper, and evaluates their potential for nickel converting. The challenges of producing a Bessemer matte to the required specifications are discussed. The economic and environmental driving forces, and the challenges of justifying a novel technology in place of productive existing equipment, are discussed.

In all geophone desigm there is provision for differential movement between parts of the mechanism and the signal voltage is generated as a function of this differential movement. The part that conforms to the movement of the ground is called the support, and the part that remains more nearly stationary with respect to more distant unactuated parts of the earth is called the steady mass. The mechanical period of the geophone is the time required for an oscillation of the steady mass after an initial impulse is given it, and is determined by the effective stiffness of the spring joining the two parts together in relation to the weight of the suspended part. Geophones have been used with frequencies varying all the way from less than 10 cycles per sec. to several hundred cycles per second. Those with a natural frequency of less than, say, 100 cycles

Optimization and sensitivity analysis of mineable economic volumes have been standard practise for open pits for many years now, and more recently software has become available to apply techniques for delineating mineable reserves for underground mines. In general these techniques have been applied to a single resource model to quantify mineable tonnes and grade for underground mining. However by using multiple conditionally simulated models both the risk associated with the mining parameters and the risk associated with variations in grade, tonnes and profit can be quantified. Using suitable software the mine planner can then easily and quickly define and compare alternative designs to assess and improve the robustness of and the confidence in the final design.

During the last few years, several authors1-6 have advanced mathematical solutions, both exact and approximate, to the pressure behavior of a well producing from a region bounded by a circular discontinuity. The most recent solutions were reported by Carter, and by Bixel and van Poollen. Varter solved the appropriate equations analytically. Bixel and van Poollen reported a numerical solution and provided correlation charts for the interpretation of flow tests; their method uses an overlay technique and is valid for wide ranges of mobility and storage capacity ratios. The mobility ratio is defined as the ratio between k/p of the two zones, and the capacity ratio is defined as the ratio between $c of the two zones. We have developed independently an analytic solution, programmed for the CDC 1604, that agreed with Carter's.'1 The same differential equation, assumptions, boundary, and initial conditions were used. We ran 30 drawdowns and 30 buildups of a unit capacity ratio and of varied mobility ratios. We also varied the radial distances to the discontinuity, and the radii of drainage. We examined the results and obtained correlations that were simple to apply and useful in flow test interpretation. The results and the correlations reported here in graphical form allow the determination of the mobility of the two zones and the radial distance to the discontinuity. They eliminate the need to fit field data to a curve as is required in the overlay technique.6 Thus, the advantages of the present correlations are that they require less effort and they provide a unique answer. They also provide guidelines for selecting the parts of the flow test plot to be used in the interpretations. Moreover, the results obtained from the programmed analytic solution define the time intervals where the approximate solution reported by Hurstl and discussed by Larkin2 are applicable. Normal buildup and drawdown plots resulted in an early straight line, a long transition zone and a late (second) straight line. However, the second straight line will not occur if the drainage radius is not at least 10 times the radial distance to the discontinuity. The mobility of the imer and outer zones can be calculated from the slopes of the first and second straight lines, respectively, by the normal methods of the flow test analysis. We found that the radial distance to the discontinuity may be determined from the abscissa value for the point of intersection of the extensions of the two straight lines. Results similar to some of these were reported by Adams et aL7 The approximate solution compared favorably with the exact one during the first and second straight-line periods. However, during the transition zone, deviation occurred between the two solutions. Discussion of Figures Figs. 1 through 7 summarize the results of this investigation. Instability of rock slopes often occurs in the form of excessive movement of bodies that are bounded by discontinuities. The well known limit equilibrium analysis for wedges and blocks suffer, however, from procedural simplifications and from the basic deficiency of limit eguilibrium analysis--the rigid body assumption. Thus, stability analysis for 2-and 3-plane wedges with a wide range of additional features regarding failure modes and external forces have been developed. The deficiency, due to the rigid body assumption, was corrected by an approach that includes the effects or the in-situ stress field and of the stiffness of discontinuities. The final step in making limit equilibrium approaches more valid was achieved with the method of artificial supports which makes it possible to identify among all possible failure modes the critical one and to determine the corresponding factor of safety. The analytical development includes the creation of appropriate computer codes and routines for programmable pocket calculators.

Detrital gold in the Greymouth-Hokitika area has been won from: (a) gravel of the Pliocene Old Man Group, (b) glacial outwash gravel of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (c) raised shoreline deposits of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (d) deposits resulting from the erosion of (a) to (c). The source of the gold was probably widely dispersed quartz veins in great thicknesses of greywacke and low-grade schist eroded from east of the Alpine Fault, with a contribution from veins in Greenland Group greywacke in the south. At times of high interglacial and post-glacial sea level, gold was concentrated along marine shorelines, and subsequent progressive uplift has resulted in a set of sub-parallel beach leads up to 100 m above present sea level. During glaciations, gold was concentrated in outwash streams close to moraines, especially where ice forming one moraine penetrated and destroyed an older one. Worked deposits in the Old Man Group may also be associated with glaciation. Apart from workings that are essentially extensions of past workings, significant new prospects may depend on inferences as to where prospective deposits are completely obscured by younger ones.

It is no longer satisfactory to assess the value of a coking coal on its intrinsic properties alone; its value depends upon its behaviour as a component in a blend. No single test can be used to make this assessment, it can only be made by carrying out a suite of tests. The quality parameters which are considered desirable, and which have widespread acceptance, have been discussed and their application to the blending of coals from New South Wales and New Zealand has been reported and discussed. Blending can be utilised to offset deficiencies, or capitalise on advantages, of the individual coals making up a blend. Coals can be blended, which alone are poorly, Coking, but which have compensating features. Blending also allows better exploitation of coking coal reserves. Several applications of blending have been reviewed with regard to coal producers and exporters, as well as coal users. The possibility of extracting a coking coal fraction from fuel coals is discussed. Blending systems and the coking of coal are also briefly reviewed.

Things are going well in the mining and construction industries world-wide. So good are things that from April 23 to 29 more than 500,000 visitors involved in those two industries attended the bauma 2007 Trade Show in Munich, Germany. Bauma is an international trade fair for construction and mining equipment that took place at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. It is hosted by Munich once every three years. This year was the most successful bauma ever and further strengthened the shows position as the world leader in the field.

Data obtained from a copper mine were used in a comparative study of the reserve estimates generated by applying geostatistical methods to surface borehole data, underground core drilling results and assay values from chip sampling. Global estimation of the deposit performed by kriging of the low-density sampling data from the surface boreholes did not provide reliable results, but could identify the potentially mineralised zones. The reserve generated from core drilling results correlated well with that estimated from chip sample data and with that estimated by the conventional methods used at the mine. A satisfactory reserve evaluation could, therefore, be obtained by kriging of the data from the underground core drilling alone, provided that a systematic sampling procedure was adopted. Estimates based on chip sampling information could be used as a check, which could avoid the current practice of chip sampling of most of the mine workings. The aim should be to develop a semi-variogram for the deposit, which could be used to estimate the reserves by kriging

The utilisation of low-grade raw materials such as fine iron ore and semi-soft coking coal, and reduction of CO2 emissions are important issues in the ironmaking process. To solve these issues, a new process called PosPRA (POSCO prereduced agglomeration process) has been developing at POSCO. It focuses on the reduction of carbon composite iron ore briquette in travelling grate. In this study, the possibility of manufacturing the prereduced agglomerate (PRA) under oxidising atmosphere with travelling grate and the optimum manufacturing conditions of carbon composite iron ore briquette are investigated. The results have shown that controlling the temperature and oxygen potential in the range from 1100 to 1200°C and below 10 vol per cent respectively is very important to increase the reduction efficiency of briquette in travelling grate. High quality properties of the green briquette and PRA could be manufactured by using the briquette mixed with 20 wt per cent of coal under 0.1 mm in size under compacting pressure in the range from 3 to 7 t/cm. Adding 1 wt per cent water as a binder is proper under the condition of high compacting pressure. In a pot grate test, the compressive strength and metallisation degree of PRA are achieved over 150 kgf/p and about 55 per cent respectively, at bed temperature 1150°C and oxygen potential of 10 vol per cent when 20 wt per cent of coal is mixed in the briquette.CITATION:Wang, M K, Son, S H, Park, J I, Jeong, H K and Cho, B K, 2017. An overall summary and the individual reports of eight workshops to determine research and development needs in western mining ore presented. Problem areas are identified, and recommendations regarding priorities, funding sources, and prime movers are made. The objective of this contract was to identify research and development needs for advancing mining technology as well as health and safety measures for western U.S. Surface and underground mining. This was accomplished by convening a series of workshops where problems could be thrashed out by producers of trona, uranium, open pit copper, underground salt (from the Midwest and New York), underground metal and nonmetal, etc. In addition to problems, future priorities, funding, and the desicion as to who should be the prime mover on R & D were discussed.

"INTRODUCTION The heavy loss of life from mine fires in some coal mines recently has focused attention on the importance of maintaining reliable communication systems between the active working sections of mines and the surface. A study of conditions following disasters in mines indicates that in several instances lives could have been saved if telephone communication had been available. Communication systems were not installed in some of these mines where disasters occurred, and in other mines they were installed in such a manner as to be rendered useless following a mine explosion or fire. Lives have been lost because of the inability of the rescue crews or persons di-recting the rescue to communicate with trapped men. Cases are known where many lives might have been saved had it been possible to give instructions for escaping or for location of barricades.More than 500 major disasters in which 5 or more lives have been lost have occurred in mines in the United States. The total number of lives lost in these disasters has exceeded 13,000. Some of the victims died instantly; but for many it was hours and in some instances days before death occurred. Evidence found in recovery operations following some of the disasters indi¬cates that many died needlessly because of the lack of suitable means of communication between the underground working areas and the surface.A localized gas and dust explosion in a coal mine in 1930 resulted in the death of 82 men; 2 were killed outright by the force of the explosion, 6 by a combination of burns and afterdamp, and 74 by afterdamp. About 140 men escaped or were rescued following the explosion, Of these, 119 escaped with little or no assistance, 2 were rescued promptly following the explosion, and 19 were rescued from behind a barricade. Seven bodies were re-covered from behind an ineffective barricade in another place; subsequent investigation proved that these men might have been guided to a safe location had an effective communication system been available."

When activated carbon is used for recovering gold in gold industry, carbon fine materials are generated in stripping, acid-washing and kiln regeneration circuits. The carbon fines at the Fort Knox mine, Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc., contain up to 0.68 kg/t (20 oz/st) of gold. In laboratory tests, gold in the carbon fines was effectively transferred to coarse virgin carbon when the carbon fines were mixed with virgin carbon in cyanide solution at a cyanide concentration higher than 0.10%. A plant-scale test conducted at the Fort Knox mine also shows effective gold transfer from the carbon fines to virgin carbon with a 95% gold recovery in a two-stage gold transfer process.

An Innovative Process for Comprehensive Utilisation of Clay-Vanadium Ores By adopting conventional processing technologies such as flotation, gravity concentration, and magnetic separation, it is difficult to enrich vanadium mineral effectively. At present, vanadium extraction process usually has not the mineral processing enrichment procedure, but rather uses direct hydrometallurgical process: roasting - leaching - precipitating vanadium for obtaining high quality V2O5 product. But it results in problems, for instance, high consume of auxiliary materials like acid and alkali, serious pollution and high cost of vanadium extraction. In the project study on the ore of a certain clay vanadium mineral, by adopting the test process: scrubbing raw ore with reagents added in - dispersing and segregating with reagents - grading enrichment, vanadium concentrate product with higher grade was made by virtue of reagent's selective inhibiting, and the purpose of upgrading the raw material used for vanadium extraction with hydrometallurgical process is achieved. The process technology obtained from project study features simple process structure, low equipment investment, low cost of mineral processing and pollution-free to environment. It provides high efficient and practical technology for the comprehensive utilisation of clay vanadium mineral, and has a prominent prospect for its popularisation and application.

A test has been devised that can predict accurately the % crystallinity developed in a slag film formed between the steel strand and the mould. The % crystallinity in the test samples was determined and compared with that for slag films formed in the mould when casting with that flux. There was good agreement between the % crystallinity in the test samples and the slag films. It was found that additions of TiO2and ZrO2had little effect on the amount of crystalline phase formed, but additions of CaO caused a dramatic increase in the amount of crystalline phase formed. Various parameters (which can be calculated from chemical composition of the flux) have been plotted against % crystallinty in the test samples. It was found that the modified (NBO/T) ratio provided the best relation with % crystallinity for the various parameters tested. There commended relation is % crystallinity=141.1(NBO/T)-284.0. This study was conducted to determine the feasibility of using large tractor dozers in land reclamation of strip-mined areas. The procedures used are patterned after engineering models developed for evaluation of military ground vehicles in cross-country operations. Tractor dozer manufacturers furnished information on capabilities of existing equipment and ideas on the practicability of using dozers larger than those currently available Generally, they believe that current dozers in the 500? to 700-horsepower range are about as large as can be built and remain economically feasible. However, one manufacturer has a wheeled dozer rated at 1200 horsepower, and another is testing a tracked dozer of about the same horse-power.
