A number of countries have introduced codes governing the valuation of mineral assets and securities. The African continent will follow suit in due course considering the importance of the global minerals industry as it relates to the attraction of foreign investment. South Africa is to introduce the Petroleum and Minerals Development Bill legislating the involvement of previously disadvantaged individuals and communities in the country?s minerals industry. One of the challenges facing the successful implementation of such codes and bills lies with the abilities of independent valuators to value mineral properties and projects on a consistent basis. Certain valuation principles and methodologies are applicable in all jurisdictions in the minerals industry. These valuation tools and principles are considered and developed in this report. They have been discussed and developed to encourage minerals valuators to consider and consistently apply the most applicable valuation methodologies.

Cobb County, located on the northwest side of Atlanta, GA, is continually growing and, like many other metropolitan areas, it needs to increase the capacity of its waste water system to meet future demand. The Cobb County Water System (CCWS) is the responsible agency for water distribution, waste water collection and treatment in most areas of the county. CCWS, one of the most progressive agencies in the metro-Atlanta area, is addressing its future waste water capacity needs in the southern part of the county with the construction of the South Cobb Tunnel and Pump Station. This project consists of an 8.8-km- (5.5-mile-) long, 8.2-m- (27-ft-) diameter, tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavated waste water storage and conveyance tunnel; six tangential vortex-flow intakes ranging from 1,533 to 5,700 L/s (35 to 130 mgd) peak flow capacity, two construction shafts, six 1.8-m (6-ft) finished diameter connecting tunnels ranging in length from 6 to 975 m (20 to 3,200 ft) and a 5,700-L/s (130-mgd) wet/dry pit pump station. The pump station will have a semi-circular wet well with a dividing wall that extends almost to the top of the shaft and a spilt dry well for reliable operation. Roller gates will control the flow to the wet well from the tunnel. The pump station will have six 1,420 L/s (32.5 mgd) pumps and two sets of stair wells and elevators. With a finished diameter of 32 m (104 ft) and a depth of 62 m (204 ft), this is the largest pump station shaft constructed so far in Georgia for the dewatering of a waste water tunnel. The pump station shaft was also the highlight of the well attended and successful 2009 Shaft Design and Construction Short Course held in Atlanta, Sept. 10-11. The two-day course was sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME and Pennsylvania State University and concluded with a field trip to the pump station shaft. The tunnel starts south of the city of Austell and finishes at the South Cobb Water Reclamation Facility (WRF), located on the banks of the [ ] Chattahoochee River just north of Interstate 20 (Fig. 1). The South Cobb Tunnel will run 30 to 137 m (100 to 450 ft) below the surface, with an average depth of about 91 m (300 ft), through metamorphic rocks (Fig 2). The construction contract was awarded to Shea-Traylor JV with the lowest bid price of $305 million and notice-to-proceed was given on July 14, 2008. Jordan Jones & Goulding, Inc. (JJG) is the project designer and performed the geotechnical investigations. Parsons/Jacobs Associates is the construction manager. The South Cobb Tunnel is CCWS?s second deep hard rock tunnel. The 15.3-km- (9.5-mile-) long, 5.5-m- (18-ft-) diameter TBM excavated the Chattahoochee Tunnel was the first deep tunnel to be construced in Cobb County. Construction began in 2000 and the project was completed four years later. It is located about 16 km (10 miles) northeast of the South Cobb Tunnel in similar geology. It was designed by JJG to meet east Cobb?s long-term waste water capacity needs and provide flow equalization to the R.L. Sutton WRF. The Chattahoochee Tunnel was named ?Outstanding Civil Engineering Project of the Year? by the Georgia Sec-tion of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2006.

Ground movements associated with high extraction underground coal mining, such as pillar retreat and longwall, are some- times large enough to disrupt the ground water regime as well as damage buildings and other surface structures. A U.S. Department of Energy Bureau of Mines- sponsored subsidence study at Kitt Energy Corporation's Kitt No. 1 Mine near Philippi (Barbour County) , West Virginia has provided an opportunity to monitor the ground water response above a mine panel during both developmental and pillar re- treat mining. Findings concerning ground water effects presented in this paper indicate that total extraction mining produced significant water level declines in deep-lying strata but had little effect on water levels at shallower depths. Post-mining values of hydraulic conductivity were typically somewhat higher than pre-mining values. Changes in water chemistry associated with mining were not sufficient to render the water unfit for human consumption.

Longwall extraction in the Phalen Scam in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia is carried out under flooded abandoned workings in the Harbour Seam 140 m above, and at depth of up to 700 m beneath the Atlantic Ocean. Careful planning of panel and pillar dimensions is necessary to prevent inflows from the overlying workings and to prevent the development of excessive subsidence strains at the seabed. This paper briefly summarises the research undertaken over the past five years by CBDC and CBCRL into the problems associated with mining under water, and then describes the development and application of a design/planning code of practice developed jointly by CBDC, CBCRL and mine regulatory agencies. The design method employed in the Code of Practise is based on empirical data from the coalfield and parameters developed from subsidence modelling and previous water inflow experience. It includes precautionary measures to be adopted during development and mining, and monitoring procedures to be followed. It is flexible enough to allow future developments in the understanding of inflow mechanisms to be incoporated without major modifications, and represents a major step forward in reducing the potential hazards associated with coal extraction in the coalfield.

To aid the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in their Resource Development Navigation Study, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Bureau) examined the potential for mineral development near ten Alaska port sites. This report presents the results for the following four sites: Balboa Bay, Beluga, Lost River, and Point MacKenzie. There are 579 known deposits within the area considered for these ports. The majority of the deposits are located within a highway/railroad corridor examined for the Point MacKenzie port site. Based on the current level of knowledge, coal deposits near the Beluga and Point MacKenzie port sites are most likely to be developed in the near future. This conclusion is based on the fact that coal projects in these areas are actively being pursued for development. The mineral wealth surrounding the four port sites is substantial. Mine models were used to examine the potential for mining tin, gold, silver, copper, and molybdenum. The models were based on published reserve and grade data and therefore do not include proprietary company data which, if available, would likely change the analysis results. Of the models examined, the tin placer mine model developed for the Lost River port site proved to be closest to being economic.

Nile sediment was collected as a waste from one of the water treatment plants in Cairo, and subjected to petrographical investigation and granulometric, chemical, and mineralogical analyses. It was expected to find diatomite in that sediment but it was a surprise to find that the diatomite content amounted to about 52.01% by volume in addition to quartz, orthoclase and clay minerals. The latter are represented by montmorillonite and illite minerals. The sediment is light gray in color, soft and has low density and high surface area, such density and surface area generally decrease with temperature. The sediment absorbs 317% of its weight in water. The diatomite skeletons are the main factor responsible for its high porosity producing microporosity and low density, and these particles are concentrated in the very fine silt size fraction (11x2µm). The common diatoms in such sediment include Cyclotella ocellata Pant, and Melosira granulata (Ehr.) Ralfs. It seems that this Nile diatomaceous sediment has many advantages over the fossil diatomite, such as Fayium diatomite in Egypt, with the absence of carbonate minerals that require grinding and calcination those cause destruction of the cellular structure and energy consumption. This Nile diatomaceous sediment can be processed using sequential classification to obtain diatomite concentrate of 88.8% grade at 90.6% recovery, and a middling product of 19.4% grade and 5.8% recovery. The suggested flow sheet is quite simple to produce diatomite product for different industries at a low cost. The unusual particulate structure and chemical inertness make diatomite an ideal mineral to be used as functional filler in a wide range of industries, and as catalyst carriers and insulating material. The concept of initiating a large action-oriented contract, directed toward inherently safe mining systems, was conceived by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in January 1970. At that time we were in the process of establishing research contracts and grants, about 100 of which were let in FY 71 to deal individually with fairly specific technological areas. These projects in the aggregate covered a wide spectrum of health and safety problems. What appeared to be necessary was the creation of a project or program that would provide a focal point for the demonstration of many of the results of this research and also in the action sense culminate with working hardware and systems that could be tested and demonstrated over a fairly long teen. The concept of working demonstrable systems, rather than just a conceptual study, was, felt to be necessary for two significant reasons. In the development of any new system, the translation from concept to working hardware is usually a costly and time consuming process which acts as a deterrent to implementation. Secondly, many decisions in the mining community to change equipment or systems ,are based on first hand observation of the new system, in operational practice, an attitude which is certainly understandable in view of the high capital costs of equipment. Representative samples are required from process streams in order to accurately measure chemical and physical characteristics. This information can then be used by process operators and metallurgists to evaluate the process and effect control actions for the operation. The capture and presentation of representative samples can be critical to measuring values, such as elemental analysis and particle size, with on-line or near-stream analyzers. A comprehensive multi-physics model has been developed and used to better understand the effects of slurry flow and particle segregation under certain operating parameters. An algebraic slip model coupled with a free surface algorithm is used to track motion and position of particles and phases within a specified geometry.

This paper presents a summary of allowable bearing pressures and skin friction values that have been used to design drilled pier foundations for support of high-rise structures in downtown Seattle, Washington. These design parameters are based upon a review of geotechnical reports and records of more than 20 building projects. The following pages present a description of the soils encountered at these sites including foundation bearings soils, and design bearing and friction values. The accumulated data is summarized in Table 1, and the locations of the buildings are shown in Figure 1. A detailed description of the construction of two belled drilled piers are presented illustrating typical methods and procedures used in downtown Seattle. The two cases are from the Washington State Convention and Trade Center (WSC&TC). SEATTLE AREA SOILS The Puget Sound area was subjected to several major glaciations during the Pleistocene Epoch. Glacial ice originated in the cordilleran and coastal mountains and the Vancouver Range of British Columbia. The maximum southward advance of ice reached the area about halfway between Olympia and Centralia. As a result of these glaciations, the Puget Lowland was filled to significant depths by glacial and non-glacial sediments during the Pleistocene.

Since 1994, various mines in the US have cooperated with research scientists at the Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories to address issues related to verification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The .CTBT requires that no country may conduct any nuclear explosion in the future. While the CTBT is a significant step toward reducing the global nuclear danger, verifying compliance with the treaty requires that the monitoring system be able to detect, locate and identify much larger numbers of smaller amplitude seismic events than had been required previously. Large mining blasts conducted world-wide will be of sufficient amplitude to trigger the monitoring system at the lower threshold. It is therefore imperative that research into the range various blasting practices employed, the relationship of yield to seismic magnitude, and identification of anomalous blasting results be performed. This paper will describe a suite of experiments funded by the Department of Energy and conducted by the Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories in cooperation with the US mining industry. Observations of cast blasting, underground long wall generated coal bumps, stoping, and explosively induced collapse of room and pillar panels will be presented. Results of these dual use experiments which are of interest to the mining community will be discussed. These include 1) variation of amplitude of seismic energy at various azimuths from cast blasts, 2) identification of the extent of back failure following explosive removal of pillars, and 3) the use of single fired shots for calibration of the monitoring system. The wealth of information and discovery described in this paper is a direct result of mutual cooperation between the US Government and the US Mining Industry.

The Raub Gold Mines are situated approximately in the centre of the Malayan Peninsula in the State of Penang. Part of the area, now known as "Raubhole," was opencut some 800 years ago by the Mon Khmers, a Cambodian people, whose vestiges mark numerous outcrops in South Eastern Asia. With their decline and extinction the work was abondoned, leaving a large pond in a dense thicket of Beluka (secondary growth).From the year 1885 onwards the history of Raubhole and the water therein records a chain sale starting from an enterprising local "Rajah," who had "assumed" authority, to an equally wakeful Singapore Arab; thence through the agency of a "down-and-out" beachcomber to a hopeful Australian company in the "goldbrick" days. Subsequent catastrophe on a depleted stringer was followed by reconstruction; the deserved reward of a long mining life, and an output of nearly 800,000 ounces of gold. Owing to the loss of notes and data stored in Singapore, this paper is not as complete as it should be, especially in respect to its metallurgical phases. Apologies are therefore tendered in advance for any deficiencies which may be noted.The necessary regional geological data have been taken largely from the admirable investigation of the Raub area by J. A. Richardson, A.R.C.S., B.Sc., F.G.S., of the Malayan Geological Survey*, and, throughout the paper, months represent lunar periods of 28 days and money is expressed in sterling.MINING SECTIONSAs shown hereunder the reef system has been divided by nature into seven isolated sections, which have been of necessity worked as seven separate small mines. From north to south these are:-(a) Sungei Agas consisting of very shallow workings to the south of, and adjacent to, a granite-porphyry mass known as Bukit (hill) Kajang. THIS mine, which is the property of the S. and M. Syndicate, London, is located at Moina, in North-West Tasmania, 18 miles from Stavertorr railway station and 36 miles from Devonport. There are metalled roads from both of these places, and, althoughhilly, these are good for team or motor traffic. Mails and passengers are provided for by a tri-weekly coach service from Sheffield, a railway town, distant 23 miles. The Moina mining field is situated on a main spur between the Forth and Iris Rivers, andat an elevation ranging from about 500 ft. above sea-level at the Forth River to 2400 ft. at the All Nations mine. The elevation at the mine office of the S. and M. mine is 1900 ft. The average annual rainfall, as recorded for the past eight years, is. 68 in.This inclildes, however, a couple of years during which the rainfall was much above normal, and taken over a longer period 60 in. would be nearer the average.

A technique for recovering copper and steel from metallic scrap has been developed by the Bureau of Mines based on preferential melting in molten salt baths at 1,150° to 1,250° C, The molten salt, preferably barium chloride or calcium chloride, both minimizes oxidation of the metals and promotes heat transfer. Cleanest separations (0.01 percent copper remaining in iron) have been achieved by pretreatment (dipping or spraying) with sodium sulphate or sodium silicate, which alters and coats the surface of the iron to inhibit the alloying or brazing with copper. An economic evaluation of the process was carried out on six combinations of sweating media and inhibiting reagents. On the basis of the postulated model, a cost of about $0.20 per pound of copper recovered has been determined for the sweating treatment operation.

Electrochemical Behaviour of Massive Chaclopyrite Bioleached Electrodes in Presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus In this work, the monitoring of bacterial and chemical dissolution of massive chaclopyrite was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV); the mineral surface was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the elements were examined by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX). The electrolyte employed for the electrochemical tests was the medium used to bioleaching the electrodes (3.0 g/L (NH4)2+SO4, 0.5 g/L K2HPO4, 0.5 g/L MgSO4+7H2O and 0.1 g/L Ca(NO3)2).The results showed differences in voltagramms carried out by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus: In bioleached electrodes tested in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, the anodic and cathodic current signals were larger than with Acidithiobacillus caldus. The analysis of CV results allowed attributing the different peaks observed in both the direct and reverse potential scanning to the oxidation of chaclopyrite to a secondary copper mineral (bornite, chalcocite and covellite) and its reduction via different non stoichiometric copper sulphides intermediaries. Surface evidences were observed by SEM, and chemical elements evidences were also investigated by EDAX.

Strategy is about making choices. Mining companies choose to do certain things and not to do other things. Mining is a long-term business, and the choices made typically have large investments attached to them, long payback periods, and significant socio-economic consequences. In today’s uncertain world, it is important to make the right choices. The mining industry in South Africa finds itself in a difficult situation. Operating conditions are tough, the socio-political environment is complex, and financial performance is under pressure. The choices made by all the stakeholders in this industry in the short term will shape the future of the industry. This paper characterizes some of the big, difficult decisions faced by the mining industry in the South African context, and discusses how these decisions could be approached in a fact-based and robust way.

Designing coal pillars to provide resistance against overburden loads has long been an aim of rock mechanics engineers. The need for accurate pillar strength models has become more urgent as greater overburdens are encountered and pillar sizes grow larger. Current pillar design models differ widely in their predictions of the trend in pillar strength with increasing pillar width-to-height ratio. The goal of this paper is to evaluate current pillar strength theories, using a comprehensive data base of stress measurements from coal pillars. The stress measurements indicate that coal pillars maintain relatively high stresses near the ribline, and that the stress gradient within the yield zone can be approximated as a straight line. Several problems are identified for further research, including calibration procedures for different types of stress cells, strain softening behavior in the yield zone, and measurement of stresses in the cores of very wide pillars.

Laser metal deposition (LMD) is an additive manufacturing technique whereby a stream of metal powder is consolidated by a focused laser beam on the surface of a substrate or engineering component. The interaction zone between the laser beam and powder particles is scanned superficially, generating tracks of deposited material. The tracks are overlapped in a deposition strategy in accordance with slices of a CAD model. Successive layers of material are built up to fabricate a near net shape part. In this work, the technique is used to fabricate metal matrix composites (MMCs) by using an elementally blended feedstock combining metal and ceramic powders in the melt pool, which melt and solidify to create the required morphology. Ti6Al4V + TiC MMCs were produced with 10, 20, and 30 vol.% reinforcing ceramic, and Zr + TiC MMCs were fabricated with 10, 20, and 30 vol.% TiC. The deposited thin walls were analysed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and indentation testing. In both systems, the analysis revealed the presence of partially melted TiC particles embedded in the metal matrix along with fine dendrites of re-solidified ceramic. The dendritic structures in the Ti-based composites were confirmed as TiC, whereas in the Zr-based composite the Zr metal reacts with theTiC to form ZrC, leaving Ti in solid solution. Both the MMCs show an increase in microhardness with increasing ceramic (carbide)content, reaching a peak HV0.1 value of 500 in the Zr- based MMC and HV0.1 of 550 in the Ti based MMC.

"This paper summarizes the work carried out to develop and implement the gold cyanidation by size class (CSC) process, a novel concept aiming to reduce cyanide consumption.First, the authors will present the methodology and results of laboratory tests conducted to evaluate the response and the expected gains for the selected ore when submitted to the CSC processing. In the second part, focus will be on the methodology behind the CSC scheme development prior to its implementation at Sleeping Giant Mine concentrator. Finally, the evaluation of the modified circuit performance (operating since July 2007) will be addressed as a reduction of cyanide consumption by more than 30% and of free NaCN in the tailings by more than 50% is confirmed.INTRODUCTIONCyanidation is the most widely used technique to extract gold from hard rock ore. Its use of oxygen as an oxidant still makes it the cheapest process available after more than a hundred years. Unfortunately, gold cyanidation is known to be a slow process that requires high consumption of cyanide. In fact, cyanidation plants are designed with very long residence times (Habashi, F., 1967). Drawbacks of long cyanidation times are, among others, loss of gold in tailings, high reagent consumption and high capital investment and maintenance costs.Responding to their members expectations for the improvement of cyanidation process, COREM undertook a challenging R&D program covering the development of alternative concepts (processes) and the understanding and solving of mass transfer, gold passivation and process water chemistry problems. One of the interesting findings of the R&D program is a patent pending process technology based on the cyanidation by size class (CSC) concept (Côté and Ourriban, 2004; Gagnon and Ourriban, 2007; Gagnon and Ourriban, 2004).The new technology was tested at the Sleeping Giant concentrator, a plant member of COREM. The existing flowsheet was modified in order to implement the CSC process in the full-scale plant. The plant has been operated using the modified CSC based process since August 2007. Laboratory testwork was conducted prior to the industrial application in order to properly design the new process scheme. The modifications included:1) Reclassification of the grinding circuit product through an hydrocyclone2) Leaching of the coarse size fraction3) Addition of the fine fraction to the coarse leaching circuit tails."

Surface subsidence resulting from "total extraction" of coal in the Collie Basin first occured in 1987 when Western Collieries Ltd trialed the Wongawilli mining method. Because very little quantitative subsidence data existed for the weak, Permian sediments, a research program was set up prior to the extraction of the first panel. The objective of the study was to be able to predict subsidence characteristics and effects prior to mining future total extraction panels. Attempts at predicting subsidence began using existing subsidence models from other coal mining regions, however, as more site information became available, it became clear that it was necessary to develop a separate, site specific predictive model for the Collie Coal Basin. Analysis of extensive field monitoring data for both surface and subsurface subsidence has produced a series of empirical models which can predict the shape of surface subsidence troughs and corresponding tills, and strains for rectangular panels and describe the sequences of ground movement from the mine root through to the ground surface. The fact that both subsurface and surface subsidence characteristics have tied in well, gives greater confidence for predictions made from these models
