The utilization of diaphragm wall construction in Hong Kong began in 1974 with the construction of the New World Center, the first diaphragm wall job built in the British Colony. That landmark job of which I am presenting a few slides and a schematic description, embodied all of the difficulties and problems which are encountered in the difficult geology of Hong Kong. A small rocky island in the South China Sea, Hong Kong provides one of the finest natural harbors in the world. It is its splendid harbor, coupled with the enterprising attitude of the Hong Kong Chinese and the laissez-fair attitude of the British government which has resulted in the explosive growth of this speck of land soon to revert to the political control of mainland China.

In the last few years major industrial companies have begun to realize the importance of Reliability as an enterprise strategy that, properly implemented, will improve financial performance. Typical results of an effective Enterprise Reliability Strategy include a 20% -50% reduction in maintenance cost accompanied by a 5% - 10%increase in real production capacity, with no capital investment in production equipment. One factor fueling the race to acquire and implement enterprise reliability is the pressure for companies to be increasingly cost-effective and competitive in global markets. In a recent study, Asset Productivity: The Next Wave, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG)stated that, “In order to compete for funds, companies must offer investor returns that are competitive with other opportunities. Alternative investments such as dot-com and others with non-traditional business models have raised the bar.” (APDF version of the study can be downloaded at www.bcg.com). BCG views asset productivity as the most powerful mechanism for increasing shareholder return. The author believes that the most effective way to increase Fixed Asset Productivity is to maximize asset utilization by increasing the Reliability of the Assets and the associated processes. Developing and implementing an ERS requires significant effort and knowledge. Most companies have difficulty finding a sufficient supply of these valuable commodities to implement an ERS Program internally. Many companies also struggle with figuring out how to get started and what direction to proceed.

Falls of small pieces of rock from between roof bolts continue to cause fatalities and to injure hundreds of coal miners each year. Roof screen is the most effective way to prevent these incidents, but some mines are reluctant to use it because they believe installing screen can be awkward, expensive and time-consuming. The most common type of roof bolting machine used in mines today is the dual boom, outside-controlled roof bolter. Mines who install roof screen using these machines have developed some machine modifications and techniques to ease roof screen installation. This paper describes some successful techniques and machine modifications that are being used in productive mines to assist with roof screen installation. Since the material handling involved with roof screen installation can expose miners to an increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ergonomists, designed machine modifications and implemented a series of tests to evaluate roof screen handling procedures for outside-controlled, dual boom roof bolting machines. Roof screen installation can also have a positive economic impact on a mine by reducing the cost of injuries, workers’ compensation, required spot or re-bolting, and clean-up of long term travel and belt entries.

ALTHOUGH great progress has been made in flotation of the Broken Hill silver-lead-zinc ores, no paper dealing with this subject has been presented to the members of the Institute since James Hebbard's valuable contribution in 1913. Almost every discovery or development in the history of flotation has formed the basis 6f a patent, and but few experimentalists have overlooked the fact that their investigations might lead to the establishment of a patentable process. This, together with the aftermath of patent litigation, naturally resulted in secrecy being maintained in matters appertaining to the art, and the industry as a whole has consequently suffered considerably. Much valuable time has been wasted through numbers ofmen repeating work along certain lines, which, unknown to them, had already been thoroughly exhausted by others, whereas a lot of this would have been avoided by a freer interchange of information amongst those directly concerned. Owing to differences in the ore treated and the various applications of flotation concentration in relation to gravity methods, the flotation problems of the various mines differ considerably. This, together with the secrecy previously referred to, hasresulted in the development of numerous systems and machines, most of which would appear, to the casual observer, to comprise separate and distinct processes. The author has endeavoured to show how much these processes have in common with one another, and, at the same time, has tried to convey some general ideas on flotation to those members of the Institute who are not directly associated with this branch of concentration.

"Certain mining methods (eg. Cut-and-fill) result in the contamination of run-of-mine ore with shotcrete. This shotcrete remains mixed with the ore throughout processing. Experimentation performed by Falconbridge Limited revealed that underground contamination of ore by shotcrete (eg. as little as 1% by weight) has led to ill-effects on the nickel recoveries from the flotation process in the mill. The nickel recoveries of contaminated samples were lower than tests without the shotcrete Contamination.To optimize flotation circuits it is important to know why the contamination has created these effects and also to find a method to abate or remove them. Laboratory testing showed that the age of the shotcrete was a factor in it’s effect on nickel recoveries. Younger aged shotcrete gave nickel recoveries lower than baseline nickel recoveries with no contamination. Older shotcrete gave nickel recoveries similar to the baseline.Literature on other cementitious material contaminations on ore revealed that a possible means of remediating this problem is the use of acid in the flotation. The initial pH in the flotation pulp was designed to be pH 9.2, but with the young shotcrete contamination the pH was in the neighbourhood of 10.5. Acid addition may act as a means of lowering the pH to the optimal operational value. Laboratory test work showed that acid addition brought nickel recoveries closer to the baseline."

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The recent and active magmatic arcs of eastern Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Solomon Islands are well endowed with sulfide mineralisation and include deposits such as Ladolam, Panguna and Solwara 1. The majority of the mineral systems in this belt are younger than four million years old, with some deposits remaining active to the present day as exemplified by active hydrothermal systems on the island of Lihir. The geodynamic setting that led to the formation of these deposits is still unresolved, with, for example, both the Pacific and Solomon Sea plates considered responsible for the formation of the Ladolam deposit on the island of Lihir under different models. In order to understand and characterise the formation of south-west Pacific mineral deposits, we must first reconstruct the complex geodynamic evolution of the region. New kinematic reconstructions show that while mineral systems in eastern PNG and the Solomon Islands are hosted within a single arc related to subduction at the New Britain and San Cristobal trenches, variable and discrete geodynamic settings exist within both the upper and lower plates throughout this region, which give rise to distinct mineralised corridors. Most notably, this region is host to: the Solwara 1 deposit, which occurs within a major transtensional corridor in the eastern Bismarck Sea the Ladolam deposit (Lihir), which is interpreted to have formed above but in relation to tearing of the subducting slab the Panguna deposit, which is related to structure in the subducting slab marginal to the actively spreading Woodlark Basin.An evaluation of the nature and variability of these diverse geodynamic settings through time can provide us with a better understanding of the relationship between the active south-west Pacific magmatic arcs and mineral deposit formation. "Flotation selectivity becomes progressively more difficult to achieve with decreasing particle size. One of the possible problems is agglomeration, i.e. particles clustering together. One mechanism derives from the surface charge all particles develop in water. Agglomeration driven by surface charge is known as coagulation. One form is coagulation between particles of two different minerals of opposite charge. Another is coagulation between particles of the same mineral when conditions are such that the charge approaches zero.The paper describes the method of measuring charge and a new automated settling technique for measuring agglomeration. The phenomena are illustrated with galena and pyrite. Methods of assessing the importance of agglomeration in the plant environment are still to be developed.IntroductionFine particles can agglomerate (i.e. adhere to each other) under certain conditions. This is counter-productive for any physical separation process, including flotation. One cause of agglomeration derives from the surface charge that all particles develop in water. Agglomeration due to surface charge effects is referred to as coagulation. There are two forms of coagulation. If the surface charge is brought to near zero then the force of repulsion is lost and particles coagulate. This usually applies to particles of one mineral type and the technical tenn is homocoagulation. On the other hand, if two particles have opposite charge there is an attractive force. Since the particles in this case are usually different minerals this is known as heterocoagulation.Both types of coagulation can cause minerals to be misplaced. In the case of heterocoagulation this is fairly obvious. One example that may be familiar is slime coating (fines of one mineral coating larger particles of another) But even homocoagulation can be a problem an agglomerate of the same mineral particles can entrap particles of another mineral."

Precipitation of tin from Pb-Sn alloys (lead-rich) occurs by the nucleation and growth of hemispherical cells which consist of tin lomelloe interspersed in the depleted solid solution. Nucleation and growth of these cells and the tin interlamellar spacing at various compositions and temperatures have been investigated. The interlamellar spacing increases approximately as the reciprocal of the logarithm of the supersaturation ratio. For constant initial tin concentration the concentration of cell nuclei increases with decreasing temperature to a limiting temperature-independent value. The kinetic results support the view that the cell growth rote is governed by the diffusion of tin along the cell boundary. In the main, the results confirm the authors' earlier deductions, drawn from resistometric and calorimetric data, about the precipitation mechonism. IT has been shown1, 2 that tin (ß) precipitates from lead-rich (a) PbSn solutions by the nucleation and growth of cells (cellular or discontinuous precipitation). These cells consist of tin lamellae, with a spacing 1, interspersed in a depleted a solution. Reorientation of a also accompanies cell growth. The kinetics of cellular precipitation of tin from lead have been measured by resistometric2, 3 and ca1orimetric1, 3 techniques. The time-transformation isotherms (t equals time; x, volume fraction of specimen transformed) of the initial rapid precipitation, which drains about 60 pet of the tin from solution, have been described by a kinetic law having the form x = 1 —exp (—bt n) [I] where n usually has the value 3.0. It was shown" that this law and the other kinetic facts can be explained satisfactorily if it is assumed that the cells grow at a constant rate and that all the cells nucleate in a time negligible in comparison with the period of cell growth before impingement. Thus, for hemispherical cells b = (2/3)pNG3 [21 where G is the rate of cell growth in cm per sec, and N is the number of cell nuclei per unit volume. The rapid rate of cell growth at low temperatures can be accounted for"' if it is assumed that the dissolved tin drains to the lamellae edges by diffusion along the sweeping cell boundary rather than by diffusion through the a crystal (volume diffusion). For cell growth governed by cell boundary diffusion it was shown, approximately G=2(X° - X° / X° ) DBA / l2 where A equals the thickness of the cell boundary; D R, the coefficient of diffusion of tin atoms within the boundary; and X° and X, are the atom fractions of tin in the supersaturated and saturated solutions, respectively. Factual data about the sedimentation in the Newcastle Coal Measures are presented. Data concerning the total coal measure sequence (isopachs, sand/shale ratio, and total coal thickness variation), data about three coal seams (Borehole, Dudley, and Victoria Tunnel) and data about interseam conglomerate units are discussed.From this data conclusions are drawn about the coal measure environment. The western edge of the coal basin, the Lochinvar Dome, although a high feature, was apparently stable during coal measure time. Despite its height it apparently supplied little sediment to the basin.The northern and north-eastern edge, which was unstable, supplied most of the coarse detritus (including the conglomerates) to the basin. The conglomerates show patterns of fluvial origin but after a period of "normal" variations in pattern they become restricted to two parallel zones evidently tectonically controlled. Deposition of conglomerates is episodic and separated by periods of coal formation when deformation was apparently slight. Formation of each of the three seams considered followed a rather similar pattern- each show development of thick coal around the basin edge and poor thin coal in the "axial" region of the present synclinal structure.Evidence of ill situ formation of some areas of the seams is discussed and periodic deformation of the basin during coal measure time is postulated.The unusual character of this coal basin, in particular the very coarse units, is stressed, despite the presence of many "normal "coal basin features.

To determine the availability of lead and zinc from demonstrated resources, the Bureau of Mines evaluated 235 mines and deposits in 31 market economy countries. Of the 235 mines and deposits evaluated for this study, 186 were evaluated as zinc operations, 30 as lead operations, and 19 as copper operations. Demonstrated lead-zinc resources of market economy countries in 1981 were approximately 4.3 billion metric tons (t) of ore containing 221 million t of zinc and 97 million t of lead. Of these amounts, approximately 154 million t of zinc and 70 million t of lead are estimated to be recoverable. The analyses indicate that demonstrated resources in market economy countries should be sufficient to satisfy projected demand for primary lead and zinc through the balance of the century. The U.S. lead industry will continue to have a comparative advantage over the rest of the world industry, barring any drastic increase in the cost of compliance with pollution control regulations. It appears that the comparative disadvantage faced by the U.S. zinc industry will probably intensify owing to the relative quantity of lower cost zinc resources in other countries, especially Canada, Australia, Mexico, and Peru.

IN the development of the incandescent electric lamp one aim of the investigators has been to establish the fundamentals of lamp design, so that the performance of any new lamp may be accurately predicted. The study of the temperature relations in lamps has done much toward establishing these fundamentals. The outstanding differences are the filament form and the bulb shape. The ideal lamp is one in which the filament operates at a uniform temperature throughout its length. In practice, it is necessary to disturb this uniformity by the introduction of supports and terminals. The amount of cooling at the supports and terminals affects the over-all efficiency of the filament as a light producer. The characteristics of weak floor strata associated with actively mined coal seams in Illinois are very important from ground stability point of view and, in many cases, are the governing factors in determining the size of pillars and mine openings. Laboratory and field getotechnical characterization studies of weak floor strata were conducted at six mines during the period 1985-1988. Correlation analysis among engineering index properties, and laboratory, and field determined strength-deformation properties were conducted to identify simple tests which can be used to estimate ultimate bearing capacity and deformation properties of immediate floor strata. It was concluded that the ultimate bearing capacity (UBC) and strength- deformation properties of the weak floor strata can be estimated from simple tests such as, natural moisture content, atterberg limits, and axial swelling strain. Indirect tensile strength was found to be a better estimator of UBC than unconfined compressive strength.

This report describes the results of a 2-year investigation of extensible face ventilation techniques and systems for use at the working face in underground coal mines. The goal was to provide a safe and convenient method of maintaining the extensible system within 10 feet of the face, thereby ensuring good ventilation. A summary of approximately 20 extensible ventilation systems proposed or tried in the past is included for reference, together with a detailed description of the design, construction, and underground testing of a new extensible brattice panel and a new fiberglass duct system. The extensible brattice system utilized a special panel which could be pushed forward as the miner advanced. Brief testing in three mines revealed some conflict with the mining cycle and led to recommendations for two improved designs. The extensible duct system was designed for a Goodman borer and utilized a telescoping tube on the left side of the roof, so that it could be extended without interfering with the miner operator. For mine sections with right-hand return ventilation, a special flat tube section is used to cross over the entry. Underground testing showed substantial improvement in face ventilation without interfering with production.

Twin bore running tunnels driven approximately 4,500 route feet by a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) EPB Tunnel Boring Machine link the West Portal and East Portal on this complex Light Rail Project. One third along the way, the TBM arrives at the Beacon Hill Station which is the deepest underground “binocular” station of its kind in North America and then “walks-across” the station to be re-launched on the other side to complete the drive. This paper discusses briefly the layout and design considerations but then focuses more deeply on the approach by the Contractor to drive and supply the tunnel. The paper addresses the approach used to launch, re-launch and recover the TBM and touches briefly on muck volume control and monitoring plus settlement monitoring and the performance achieved. Also of interest is a unique solution to a difficult launch situation involving a secant pile tieback wall designed with several rows of double I-beam steel walers spanning the eye at the West Portal under the I-5 freeway.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The formation of orogenic gold deposits is commonly a two-stage process. The first stage involves preconcentration of gold in a suitable source rock, such as carbonaceous black shales, felsic volcaniclastics or komatiitic volcanics. The second stage involves the release of gold (commonly with arsenic and/or tellurium) from the source rocks during metamorphism or magmatic intrusive events, accompanied by the replacement of source rock pyrite by pyrrhotite. Recent research suggests that synsedimentary gold trapped in the structure of diagenetic arsenian pyrite in reduced carbonaceous facies of continental margin sedimentary basins is an ideal source of gold for many orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits. The conversion of diagenetic arsenian pyrite to pyrrhotite during basin closure and greenschist facies metamorphism is the key process releasing gold and arsenic to the metamorphic fluid, with metal deposition in structural trap sites to form the deposits.CITATION:Large, R R, 2015. Fundamental principles of trend surface analysis are briefly reviewed. Recent analyses of several granite masses illustrate the method of estimating the quantitative regional composition and also variation trends. Mineralogi-cal, bulk chemical, and other quantitative variates can be employed. Such results should improve gravimetric surveys (etc.) relying on correction terms based upon estimated rock composition. For the first time realistic estimates of the mean composition of rock bodies can be made with the aid of trend components. Deviation maps hold promise for delimitation of disseminated mineralized areas. Deviations comprise residual "anomalies" after removal of trend components. In petrogenetic work such deviations have been shown to reflect local influences (e.g., contamination of magma by assimilation of xenoliths or country rocks of the envelope). Similarly, mineralization should be reflected as deviations standing out from background trends. Actual examples are given. Present results largely involved projection of data onto a horizontal plane, but if sufficient data are available use of three spatial coordinates increases accuracy for prediction in "unexposed" areas. Regression analysis shows that statistical correlations between variates for regionally distributed specimens are often strong (particularly with percentage data). Hence, in preliminary surveys more easily determined variates may sometimes be employed to gain first estimates of the distribution of components more economically significant. The sampling plan is of paramount importance. Unless a suitable sampling plan is devised and adhered to rigorously during collection of the samples, all subsequent analysis is liable to strong bias and to yield spurious estimates of the truth. For a wide variety of purposes it is becoming necessary to assess the quantitative composition and variability of rock masses and mineralized zones of various types. In petrology and petrography this is something of a break with tradition, because virtually all descriptions heretofore have been qualitative. Although vast amounts of qualitative data have been compiled, little is known about the quantitative behavior of rock components. However, if variability of rocks could be understood and expressed with sufficient accuracy, there would be considerable advantage to both economic and petrogenetic problems. For example, if, on the basis of a limited series of observations, the three-dimensional geometry of a disseminated orebody (or ore-bearing formation) could be predicted accurately, it would be possible to extrapolate with confidence the structure into unexposed areas. The following example based upon the geometry of an igneous cone sheet illustrates the point. The significant rock-unit gives outcrops at a number of points on the exposed surface ABCD (Fig. 1A). Study of n exposures may enable a geologist to predict that the rock-unit is circular in form and thus indicate where the unit can be expected in unexposed terrain. Such observations are made at sites with u, v coordinates, but, if subsurface information is available at sites with uvw coordinates, it will eventually become possible to predict accurately the three-dimensional form of the rock mass. Geologic rock masses or mineral deposits are not generally as regular and symmetrical in geometric form as the body illustrated in Fig. 1A. However, even where the broad limits of a major rock mass are known, a more acute problem arises in attempting to obtain detailed quantitative estimates of its internal variability; it is difficult to predict the variability of a mass from a limited number of observa-

The following note on the mineral association in the ores of the Tennant Creek Goldfield, Northern Territory, is largely based on Mineragraphic Reports Nos. 49, 89, 117 and 193 of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. These reports are the results of the examinations of auriferous specimens from a number of mines of the goldfield and are now supplemented by the examination of further specimens from Mt. Samuel forwarded by Mr. V. G. Martin.The Tennant Creek Goldfield lies in the central portion of the Northern Territory, about Lat. 190 35', Long. 1340 15', on the Overland Telegraph Line and about 369 miles north of Alice Springs. It comprise an area extending about 50 miles east and west, by 30 miles north and south.The geology of the goldfield has been described by Woolnough. (2)The rocks of the area are of pre-Cambrian age, and consist of talcose, chloritic, micaceous and siliceous schists of sedimentary origin, interbedded with flows or dykes of schistose quartz porphyry, and of granites which were intruded subsequent to the regional metarporphism of the area. The rocks are moderately folded, but the beclding tends to be obscured by a pronounced east-west cleavage. The most continuous orebodies run east and west, parallel with this cleavage.Numerous lenses of hematite occur in the schists, with their long axes, parallel to the cleavage, and the gold values of the field are frequently associated with such hematite bodies. The dimensions of these hematite bodies are variable but rarely exceed a length of 300 ft., with an average thickness between 10 and 30 ft.; the original vertical dimensions are thought to be comparable with their length. The lenses tend to occur in groups when they are arranged en echelon both horizontally and in depth; and erosion has exposed individual lenses to different degrees, ranging from incipient exposure to complete removal. The existence of unexposed hematite lenses at depth has been proved by geophysical surveys, coupled with drilling tests. (3)A few of the bodies are pipe-like. Many are surrounded by a casing of brecciated rock, composed of fragments of hematite and shattered country rock, and presumably caused by subsequent earth movements which crushed the country rock against the resistant hematite bodies. In the early days of the field most of the important gold occurences were found within these crushed zones, or, to a less extent, within the hematite bodies themselves.These occurrences appeared to be associated only with those hematite lenses which were intersected by quartz veins or other lines of weakness, of later origin than the crushing. Mineralogical analysis of a nickeliferous laterite from the Rockhampton region shows that the nickel is largely associated with the manganese wad and opaline silica. The laterite also contains an appreciable chromite content (about 12 per cent Cr2O,) although this tends to be poorly liberated.Leaching with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, at atmospheric pressure at the boiling point is non-selective with respect to iron dissolution.The degree of dissolution increases as the acid concentration and retention time are increased; cobalt dissolution requires less aggressive conditions than does the dissolution of an equivalent amount of nickel.Leaching with sulphuric acid at elevated temperatures and pressures leads to a minimum amount of iron dissolution, is rapid, and requires a reduced acid addition rate. Nickel and cobalt recovery from the clarified leachate would be simplified because of the leach selectivity.Pressure leaching appears to be the most practical route for treating the Rockhampton laterite. The economics of processing would be made more attractive by the recovery of a chromium concentrate from the leach residue. This would typically contain about 45 per cent Cr2O, and could be used as a source of chromium chemicals.

The year was 1974. The event - the United States Congress was embroiled over what issues should be included in the proposed national surface mining law. The question - what should be done with underground mines? The leading bills ultimately addressed the environmental impacts associated with underground mines including provisions to protect the surface from subsidence impacts. Amid the fears that this subsidence language might discourage underground mining, sponsors of the bill were asked to explain the meaning of the provision that read "to prevent subsidence to the extent technologically and economically feasible." Was this an attempt to limit mining that caused planned and controlled subsidence? Former Deputy Director of the Office of Surface Mining, Dean Hunt, reviewed some of these historical events in a 1985 presentation before the Eastern Mineral Law Foundation. He reported that in 1974 Congressman Morris Udall took the floor to respond to these concerns expressed by other members of Congress and the industry. Mr. Hunt cited Congressman Udall's July 10, 1974 Congressional Record statement: "The House bill contemplates rules 'to prevent subsidence to the extent technologically and economically feasible.' The word prevent led to fears expressed by the Secretary of the Interior Morton, that the effect would be to outlaw longwall mining, with its obvious subsidence ... in fact the bill's sponsors consider longwall mining ecologically preferable and it and other methods of controlled subsidence are explicitly endorsed." Further, the report that accompanied the front-running bill, HR11500, provided the following clarification on the issue of subsidence prevention: "It is the intent of this section to provide the Secretary with the authority to require the design and conduct of underground mining methods to control subsidence to the extent technologically and economically feasible in order to protect the value and use of surface lands. Some of the measures available for subsidence control include: (1) leaving sufficient original mineral for support; (2) refraining from mining under certain areas---or (3) causing subsidence to occur at a predictable time and in a relatively uniform and predictable manner. This specifically allows for the uses of longwall and other mining techniques which completely remove the coal." It is clear from the preceding statements that Congress considered the removal of all the coal and causing subsidence in a predictable and uniform manner to be equal to or better than leaving support coal and causing no subsidence. While the actual provision in the bills talked of preventing subsidence, a subsequent exception made it clear that the real intent was to control it. This is evidenced in the specific planned subsidence language that appeared in the bills and ultimately in Section 516 (b) (1) of PL95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. It reads: "...adopt measures...to prevent subsidence ... except in those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner..." In spite of this historic record that supports controlled subsidence, something has been lost in the implementation. The primary focus by many regulators over the past few years has been on the "prevent" aspect irrespective of mining method being used. This has appeared to change the original intent of Congress from one of controlling subsidence to one of minimizing damage. The objective of this report is to review some of the current regulatory issues that impede full extraction mining and offer some suggestions on possible ways to deal with these issues.

The Reserve Mining Co., in the processing of taconite iron ore quarried from the Peter Mitchell Pit, deposited the finely crushed waste rock into Lake Superior near Silver Bay Minnesota. In the early 1970s The U.S. Environmental Protection agency filed a lawsuit against Reserve Mining Co., asking the court to force the company to stop dumping into the lake. On April 20, 1974, after a lengthy court battle, the U.S. District Court concluded that the Reserve Mining discharge into Lake Superior violated federal and state pollution laws and thus ordered Reserve Mining Co., to halt the lake disposal of taconite tailings. At the time many feared that some of the mineral particles contained in the tailings (alleged to be asbestos or asbestos-like) would cause human health problems. This Conference was thus convened to readdress the problem of the mineral content of the Biwabik Iron Formation and to whether any minerals contained in the ore could cause human disease. The four papers given in this session address the nature of the mineral particles in the taconite rock, the definition of the term ??asbestos?? and the history of the legal controversy over the possible health effects of certain mineral particles contained in the Biwabik iron range ores. Morey The Biwabik Iron Formation was a principal source of ore for the American steel industry during the 20th Century. The unaltered iron deposits, called taconite, contain approximately 30% iron and 50% SiO2. About 75% of the iron in taconite resides in the mineral magnetite, the remainder is largely in iron carbonate and several iron-silicate minerals.
