For certification of blast resistant windows, current tests consist of arena tests or large air gun tests. Arena tests involve the detonation of more than 1000 pounds of explosives with windows placed in the range of hundreds of feet. The result of an arena test is a loading on a window consistent with an expected industrial or terrorist blast. Due to the nature of this type of test, only a limited number of facilities are available and operational costs can be extremely high. Air gun tests involve the use of compressed air and a failing diaphragm fired through a large tube. Although this test is more cost effective and easier to administer with lower environmental impacts, it is not an explosive loading and does not create a negative phase on the tail of the pressure pulse. Simply using a small charge in close proximity to the window is not a viable option either. The pressure peak can be reached using this method, but the duration of the pressure pulse is such that the positive phase impulse is on the order of ten times less than that for an arena test.

The purpose of this effort was to investigate the feasibility of employing a piezoelectric transducer for seismic communications applications in mine environments. The transducer, a government furnished device incorporated a high Q, spring-mass resonator to load the air side of the piezoelectric crystal. The resonant frequency was seismic load dependent and fell in the range of 300 to 340 Hz. The effort included a mathematical analysis of the transducer, with corroborative laboratory tests, together with actual communications experiments performed first in an open-formation limestone quarry and finally in an operating iron mine. This work showed that the transducer could be coupled efficiently to hard, competent rock media with power conversion efficiencies of 70 to 80 percent (electrical to mechanical) in typical installations. In the iron mine, when radiating peak power was about 30 W (acoustical) in a gated pulse mode, signals were received at a distance of 760 ft through a massive rhyolite porphyry formation. This represents a 15% radiation efficiency with an input of 200 watts. Despite the high ambient noise level due to operating mine machinery, a signal-to-noise ratio of about 20 dB was achieved using a very narrow band filter to process the received signal, and a data rate of about two pulses/sec was demonstrated.

Gasification is a process that converts a carbon feedstock into synthesis gas (CO+H2). Slagging gasifiers operate at high temperature and pressure and in a corrosive-wear environment from the slag. Cr2O3-based refractory linings are used to protect the steel vessel that comprises the gasifier from the aggressive gasification environment. Increasing service life of the gasifier is one of the keys for wide spread development of this technology. In support of the goals, research on the gasifier atmosphere, the slag chemistry, the interaction of Cr2O3 refractory with different feedstock mixtures (e.g., coal and petcoke) were characterized by post mortem analysis of bricks from service in gasifiers and thermodynamics simulation of the environment. Examples demonstrating how thermodynamic calculations can explain the post mortem results and make predictions of material interactions will be given. Attention is placed on the possibility of Cr+6 in different feedstock mixtures and operating conditions.

Dumper operators are frequently exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) in surface mines. Surface mining activities involve the amalgamation of comparatively high intensity of vibration and extended exposure durations. Efficient risk reduction mandates knowing of important phases of a task that poses a threat to health of dumper operators. So far in India very limited studies have been reported on WBV exposure with regard to surface mines. This paper evaluates WBV of dumper operators based on ISO 2631-1:1997 Standards and European Union (EU) Directive 2002 for different phases of job cycle. Six dumpers were considered for this study and the vibration measurements were made for all the four phases of the job cycle by placing the triaxial accelerometer on the operator’s seat-surface and at the seat-back, independently. The findings of the study revealed that the haulage task (loaded travel and empty travel) remains the chief contributor to vibration exposure according to seat-surface and seat-back measurements. Maximum frequency weighted root mean square (RMS) of 1.12 m/s2 and 1.09 m/s2 were reported for empty travel task for seat-surface and seat-back measurements, respectively. For seat-surface measurements based on RMS, Z axis remains as the dominant axis of vibration for all the dumpers during haulage task, whereas for seat-back measurements, the dominant axis varies between X and Y. Exposure action value (EAV) based on RMS has exceeded the threshold value of 0.5 m/s2 for all the dumpers during loaded travel and empty travel for seat-surface as well as for seat-back measurements.

Since human daily demands for fresh water have been increased significantly, the supply of fresh water for the mining industry, especially froth flotation, should be considerably reduced. In addition, stricter environmental standards have been implemented in many countries to reduce the risks due to the disposal of wastewater, many flotation operators have to seek more efficient ways to utilize the limited fresh water sources. Recycling water with high concentrations of impurities is a normal strategy for most of the mineral processing plants; however, water quality should be carefully considered to guarantee a smooth flotation process. Recently, the application of seawater in flotation has attracted much attention due to its availability and abundance rather than fresh water. However, the influencing mechanisms due to the application of seawater in flotation have not been fully understood especially the reactions between mineral particles and bubbles in the presence of high concentrations of cations and anions. This would impede the application of alternatives to fresh water in the flotation. Therefore, this paper reviews the current water sources and the technologies for water recycling in the flotation process. Specifically, the life cycle of water in flotation was proposed. In addition, the strategies including high pulp density flotation as well as the most promising alternatives to fresh water have been discussed in details, with the related mechanisms being demonstrated.

"Preg-robbing has been known for many years, where increased losses are suffered because dissolved gold is removed from solution by adsorption onto carbonaceous matter. In direct cyanidation circuits it is reasonable to conclude that the preg-robbed gold is either in a gold cyanide [Au(CN) - 2, AuCN] or metallic [Au°] form. However, in circuits with a pre-oxidation step possibilities increase and multiply even further because of water recycle streams containing apparent and not-so-apparent gold ligands. It is in these circuits where speciation of sorbed gold, i.e. the identification of the gold compound, is useful. The importance arises from the fact that proper identification of the sorbed gold species can be used to determine how, when, where and why gold was removed from solution, thereby identifying the exact cause of the problem and providing clues as to how it may be rectified.INTRODUCTIONTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt ever to speciate gold preg-robbed by carbonaceous matter using a surface sensitive microbeam technique. This approach enables the direct determination of gold species sorbed on carbonaceous particulates, opening an entirely new field in the understanding of the chemistry of gold sorption on carbon. The reasoning behind this effort was to add to the current knowledge of the detrimental effect chloride ions have on gold recovery by the pressure oxidation and in particular why in the ensuing CIL step, gold is not being desorbed from the surface of the carbonaceous particles (Table 1)."

Enrollment represented as increase of 10 plants over 1932, and one addition was made to the number of States represented.The primary purpose of the United. States Bureau of Mines in conducting the contest is to promote safety in United States mineral industries. This purpose is accomplished directly through the efforts of the competing companies and their employees to win first place in the competition and thereupon receive recognition on a national scale for their achievement the purpose is accomplished indirectly through studies by the United States Bureau of Mines of the facts contained in the accident reports the competing companies furnish to enable the Bureau to compute the accident rates that are the basis for determining the winners of the contest.The statistics which constitute the basis for determining the winning companies and the relative standing of all companies are prepared uniformly without regard to the States in which the companies operate, or to differences in classes of accidents covered by State laws relating to compensation for injuries resulting, from industrial accidents.Bronze trophies, known as 'Sentinels of Safety', which were provided by The Explosives Engineer magazine to be awarded annually by the Bureau of Mines, were presented to five companies in the contest of 1933, each company having established the best accident-prevention record within one of the five classes into which all companies were divided, namely, anthracite-mining companies, bituminous-coal-mining companies, metal-mining companies, operators of nonmetallic-mineral mines other than coal mines, and quarries or opencut mines. The trophies are awarded for 1 year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The trophy for bituincus-coal mines was won by a company in Wyoming. A company in Tennessee won the trophy for metal mining. In the nonmetal-mine group the trophy was again won by a company in New York. A quarry in Michigan won the trophy for the quarry-and-opencut-mine group. The trophy for anthracite mines remains in Pennsylvania, as all anthracite mines in the contest are in that State."

It has been fairly firmly established (Fisher, N. H., 1945) that the fineness of the gold in any ore deposit varies with the depth from the surface at which the deposit was formed, and, as a corollary to this, that it is dependent upon the temperature and pressure at the time of deposition. This relationship is such that, under certain conditions, the gold fineness, taken into consideration with other recognised criteria, furnishes a very sensitive and reliable guide to the relative temperature of ore formation, at least within the epithermal and the upper part of the mesothermal range.Definition of Fineness.The fineness of gold is calculated in parts per thousand and refers to the proportion of gold present in the naturally occurring metal in the lode, which is actually a gold-silver alloy, containing usually about 10 parts per thousand of base metal and up to 500 parts perthousand of silver. A clear distinction should be made between fineness and gold-silver ratio. The latter refers to the total gold and silver in the lode as determined by assay and is usually expressed as the ratio Au:Ag. Only in deposits where other silver-bearingminerals are entirely absent, which occurs comparatively rarely, can the gold-silver ratio be used as a measure of gold fineness and, in many cases, the two have no relationship. For instance, in the Edie Creek area in New Guinea, the lodes formed under shallow epithermal conditions all carry gold 500 to 550 fine, although the gold-silver ratio ranges from 1:100 to 1:1, in places in adjacent lodes.Determination of Gold Fineness.The fineness of lode gold can be determined only after it has been separated from all other minerals. Amalgamation recovers gold fairly cleanly - unless native silver is present - and the fineness of amalgam bullion is generally a reliable indication of the correct fineness of the gold. If the use of plates is involved, the bullion may be adulterated, but the effect of any copper, or other metal, that may have been introduced can be cancelled by assuming that the gold and silver shouJrl add up to about 990 fine, or by ignoring the base metal content altogether, which varies little in naturally-occurring gold, and in calculating for comparison purposes all fineness figures to the basis Au + Ag = 1,000.The composition of bullion obtained from cyanidation is generally intermediate between the true gold fineness and the total gold-silver proportion as determined by assay of mine or mill-head samples of Cyanide solution dissolves other silver-bearing minerals and the fineness of the resulting bullion is thereby lowered. Consequently, the fineness of cyanide bullion rarely corresponds to the true gold fineness and is useless for diagnostic purposes, although it is a common fallacy to refer to the fineness of cyanide bullion as the fineness of the gold.

The Tennant Creek goldfield is situated in the Northern Territory, 360 miles north of Alice Springs, or a tot~l distance of 1,300 miles north of Adelaide, and 600 miles south of Darwin. The auriferous area extends 20 miles north and south by 50 miles east and west. The overland telegraph line and the AIice Springs-Darwin road pass through the centre of the field.HISTORY, PRODUCTIONThe country comprising the goldfield was traversed by J. MacDouall Stuart between 1859 and 1861 in the course of his last three exploring expeditions, which terminated respectively at Attack Creek, Newcastle Waters and at the mouth of the Adelaide River. The explorer named Tennant Creek and also Mount Samuel, on which mining operations are now in progress. The overland telegraph line was completed in 1872 and a relaying station established eight miles north of the site of the present township. There was no other settlement in the adjacent country prior to the opening up of the goldfield.Gold was discovered in 1926 on what is known as the Great Northern lease, three miles north of the township. The field was remote; the nearest plant at which gold ore could be treated was at Peterborough, in South Australia, 1,186 miles distant, and it was not until 1932 that the development of the field actively commenced.The production of the field from its inception to December 31, 1939, was 57,895 QZ. of gold, valued at £522,000, recovered from 61,793 long tons of ore, won from 98 mines. In 1940 seven of these mines had reached depths between 100 ft. and 230 ft., the workings of the majority being less than 60 ft. below surface.TOPOGRAPHY, WATERThe country is traversed by parallel and sub-parallel lines of hills trending east and west and rising to altitudes varying from 50 ft. to 100 ft. above the intervening valleys. The low ranges and isolated hills owe their survival to the resistance offered by their indurated, harder rocks to erosion which has removed the softer intervening formations. Their elevation and area depend to a considerable extent upon the presence of; and, the size of, the more or less exposed haematite formations, or are due to the influence of extensive siliceous dykes which traverse the locality.Watercourses head from the hills and either flood out on the flats within a short distance, or in a few cases follow longer courses to the northward. "Construction of a new bridge in a seismically sensitive area requires careful assessment of earthquake impact on the serviceability of the facility. Not only is the superstructure vulnerable, the foundations play a key role in the bridge’s survivability. A new bridge in eastern part of the state of Missouri in the U.S.A. is located in a seismically active area and hence subject to additional thrust on the foundations and superstructure and potential damage due to liquefaction. An eleven span bridge with foundation soils varying from shallow bedrock to over 30 m (100 feet) overburden soils were considered for the bridge support piers. Two of the bridge support bents located within the flood plain area through over 30m (100 feet) of alluvial deposits were considered most affected by an earthquake event due to the additional thrust and lateral ground spreading. This paper describes the determination of site specific seismic hazard, numerical modelling of the foundation system, and methodology of dynamic analyses, effects of lateral spreading and liquefaction potential on bridge support bents. From numerical modelling using FLAC, the increase in thrust on piers and deformations were computed to predict the behavior of the foundations.INTRODUCTIONA newly constructed bridge on route US 40 crosses the Missouri River west of St. Louis, Missouri and upstream of Mississippi River in mid-west USA. The west abutment area has near surface bedrock while the east abutment area has overburden deposits over 30m (100 feet) thick, mostly river sediments comprising of silts, lean clays and sands overlying bedrock. Softer layers of silts and sands in the east river bank area are assessed to be liquefiable during a high magnitude earthquake event. St Louis area has a potential for a high magnitude earthquake due to the New Madrid Fault some 160km (100 miles) south. The bridge foundations were designed as drilled piers, 2 m (8 feet) in diameter and socketed into the bedrock. Bents No. 10 and 11, located in the lower flood plain area of the river, are considered to be most affected by a seismic event.In order to perform dynamic analyses of the foundations, earthquake ground motion time history was developed for the specific site using a Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) and selecting and scaling of a recorded time history. Relying on the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazard Program for the PSHA and AASHTO Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design, spectral acceleration values for the site were developed. The spectral acceleration values were for a 7 percent probability of exceedance in 75 years (1000 year return). Numerical modelling using FLAC computer program was performed. This paper presents the seismic design parameters, methodology used in the dynamic analyses, static and dynamic analyses, impact and mitigation of liquefaction on Bents 10 and 11 and the abutment fills, and effect of lateral spreading on the foundations in the lower flood plain area of the bridge. From the numerical modelling, increase in thrusts on pier foundations and estimated deformation were computed."

In comparison with shallow foundation, usually higher bearing capacity, smaller average settlement and better stability are the engineering characteristics of pile foundation. Besides, a smaller differential settlement and a lower settlement rate which will converge quickly are more important characteristics. The superstructure of the building with pile foundation may not meet with significant differential settlement. In this paper, settlement records and other data of different kinds of buildings are chosen to illustrate the characteristics of pile foundation. Moreover, some technical problems in connection with foundation engineering solved in consideration of the above mentioned characteristics of pile foundation are also introduced.

This thermomechanical analysis used the finite element method to investigate the behavior of crushed salt backfill in a waste disposal room situated in a salt dome repository. The first of two objectives was to determine the transient temperature rise and degree of thermomechanical consolidation that occur in the backfill as a function of drillhole depths. The second objective involved the evaluation of closure due to salt creep of unlined emplacement drillholes and the determination of pressure on steel sleeve liners in the drillholes should liners become necessary for canister retrieval. The retrievability period was considered to extend for 25 years after waste emplacement. The canisters were assumed to contain ten-year old high level waste with a thermal output of 4.3 kW at the time of emplacement.

Hydrogen and carbon monoxide reduction data were obtained on pelletized materials of the type currently being prepared commercially in Australia.Pellets, approximately 1 cm diameter, made from Deepdale, Iron Prince, and Mt. Newman iron ore were reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 500°-900°C and the reduced pellets were examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe, and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95 per cent reduction the data could be described by a porous model where gaseous diffusion through the solid is rate controlling. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. Above 95 per cent reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation of retained wustite or fayalite.Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 750°-900°C showed that the rate of reduction was approximately five times slower than for reduction by hydrogen.The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the initial properties of the pellets which may account for the widely conflicting results that have been obtained with previous investigations on porous pellets.

El presente texto señala la aplicación del sistema de gestión de demanda y consumo de energía eléctrica en la fundición de Southern Perú. El sistema está compuesto por un módulo predictor de demanda eléctrica y un módulo de simulación del sistema eléctrico de la planta. El primero, se construyó utilizando redes neuronales con algoritmos de aprendizaje backpropagation, capaz de pronosticar la evolución horaria de la demanda eléctrica con un porcentaje de error cercano. Mientras que el segundo está basado en técnicas de estimación paramétrica, redes neuronales y ecuaciones matemáticas obtenidas por regresión estadística, que simula el comportamiento del sistema de energía eléctrica de la fundición. En ese sentido, los módulos facilitan una adecuada planificación, ya que permiten conocer el comportamiento de la demanda horaria y los patrones de consumo de la planta, incluyendo los componentes de la facturación. Así como las deficiencias energéticas y oportunidades de mejora, sobre la base del análisis de la información acerca de los equipos, procesos y planes de producción, así como programas de mantenimiento.

M-30, Madrid’s inner ring, covers 42 sq km of the city centre where one million people reside. It was constructed in several phases during the sixties and the eighties. The design criteria applied to those phases were different and were not always homogeneous with urban roads with lighting regulation as well as speedways. These areas had a heavy concentration of access and exits and there had been made many changes on the number of traffic lanes which has caused heavy traffic congestions and high accident rates. The environmental impact and noise pollution in residential areas are also consequences of M-30. The Madrid Major took a decision at the beginning of the present legislation, based on socio economic and environmental evaluation; rebuild the M-30 with the following sustainable mobility principles: Underground transfer of a considerable portion of the main ring and some of its links replacing some parts of the surface with new green areas in order to reduce the environmental impact. Increase the traffic capacity, improving the traffic continuity and fluidity and eliminating the lighting regulation areas, which is one of the main congestion problems currently. Increase the traffic safety with clear signalling information panels and avoiding difficult maneuvering. Redesign the links with the high capacity radial highways and other connecting lanes of the city. The project is worth 3.7 billion Euros. In 2007, when the construction is completed, it is expected will save 14 million of journey hours that represent 4.5 million Euros saved in fuel consumption per annum, There will be a very significant reduction of 35,000 tons of CO2 in terms of pollution and 400 less car accidents. Those values will increase even more in the following years. The areas beside Manzanares River, running parallel to the M-30 on the western side of Madrid, will be highly enhanced. Better water quality and the recovering of the green areas existing in old times will also return for the citizen’s enjoyment. TUNNEL CROSS SECTION OF CALLE 30 SOUTH BY PASS One of the major challenges of the new Calle 30 is actually not only the related to the main road but also to the link with the A-3, with highway to Valencia. This link is currently the most congested area and has one of the highest traffic densities of Spanish roads, with more than 250,000 vehicles/day. The remodelling of this area is the principle objective of the South by-pass. The tunnel is the only answer for this by-pass as the road alignment will go among buildings. Separations, which form along stratigraphic boundaries in the roofs of potash mines, pose a serious safety concern. If these separations go undetected they can lead to falls of ground. The current method of identifying the location and extent of these separations is through manual scaling (sounding) using an aluminium rod. The potash mining companies would like to have a tool, which could quickly and reliably detect these separations and distinguish between them and clay seams. This paper presents the results of field trials undertaken at various potash mines in Saskatchewan belonging to the member companies of the Saskatchewan Potash Producers Association. A ground penetrating radar instrument from RST called SUSI (stepped frequency, ultra-wideband, synthetic aperture radar instrument) was used. SUSI has the ability of working over various frequency bandwidths. Four mines were chosen for these field trials, covering the different geological characteristics encountered in the Saskatchewan potash mines: Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan?s (PCS) Allan and Lanigan Divisions, Agrium?s Vanscoy Potash Operations and IMC Potash?s K2 Mine. These field trials indicated that stepped frequency ground penetrating radar technology could be ?tuned? to identify both separations and clay stratigraphy in the softrock, potash mine environment, based on the different spectral responses of the features.

A new high intensity grinding technology has been developed and is now being commercialized by Hicom International of Australia. This has led to the development and manufacture of Hicom 120 grinding mills which are now being sold internationally for a range of mining industry applications. The first commercial process application has been for the diamond sector, where the ability of the mill to remove host kimberlite rock by attritioning, with no damage to the thereby liberated diamonds, is seen to be a most beneficial attribute. There are, however, many other mineral industry applications for this mill. The design of the Hicom mill is unique. Based on a high speed centrifugal motion of the grinding chamber, very high power intensity is delivered to the grinding process. Most significantly, a high acceleration field, 50 times stronger than gravity is produced, creating very high power input per unit of mill volume, and exceptionally fast particle breakage rates, typically 50 - 100 times greater than those in conventional tumbling mills. A mill developing such forces has significant implications to comminution technology and practice.

The era of the shield-supported longwall face began in the United States a little over 25 years ago. The most fundamental development of the shield in the past 25 years has been an increase in size and capacity and a progression toward two-legged designs in favor over four-legged shields. Is the “bigger-the-better” design philosophy justified? The advantage of the two-legged design is largely attributed to its active horizontal force caused by the forward orientation of the leg cylinders. How do we know this? You might be surprised to learn that shield loading data may suggest otherwise. In addition, what about setting pressures? Should they be set as high as possible? Some people have advocated that setting pressures should equal the yield pressure. Does this make any sense? Is yielding a good or bad thing? These are some questions still worthy of investigation that are addressed in this paper. The first major change in gateroad support was the use of cable bolts to replace conventional wood cribbing particularly in Western mines. Standing support changed very little until the mid-1990s, when Strata Products1 introduced the Hercules and Propsetter supports in Eastern mines and Burrell Mining Products introduced the Can support in Western mines. Since then, there has been a dramatic increase in new roof support technologies for longwall gateroad support. Historically, standing support, including shield supports, have been designed based on a simplistic model requiring the support to have sufficient capacity to support the gravity loading of a perceived detached rock mass. This approach ignores the stiffness of the support and the resulting ground deformation that is known to be critical to roof stability. Recently, a new approach based on the ground reaction concept has been promoted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to account for the interaction of the support with the rock mass behavior in achieving ground stability. In addition to gateroad support design, this concept has ramifications for shield capacities, setting pressures, and recovery room support design that challenge current practices in these areas. Although longwall mining has matured into the safest and most productive underground mining method used today, traditional concepts of roof support design and practice should still be evaluated and challenged. Ultimately, advancements in the science of ground control are made by recognizing deficiencies in current theories and thinking outside the box.
