A thorough improvement in mine safety is contingent on many factors that require scientific decision-making for selection and prioritizing of important factors for safety improvement. Their analysis using an established scientific method can improve mines’ safety conditions and assist the administration for informed decision-making. This research establishes a mine safety evaluation index and proposes an integrative model based on the entropy weight and grey clustering methods. In the evaluation index, 27 significant factors of safety are identified and categorized into 7 criteria. The proposed evaluation system analyzes all indicators according to Pakistan’s current mine safety situation and their significance for potential safety improvement in the future. Results reveal that current safety practices are outdated due to a lack of mechanization in the mining industry and minimal capability of the management to achieve the desired safety targets. Appropriate safety policies and safety education are missing in the daily working environment. The lack of overseeing the execution of safety operations and the lack of ambition and strong work ethic workers contribute to the paucity of mines’ safety conditions. The prevention and control systems to manage risks and hazard are not in place, and the working environment in mines remain difficult. Therefore, to have enhanced mine safety, important factors can be addressed in chronological order, as presented in this paper. The proposed methodological approach can be applied to other prioritization applications to analyze the indicators and determine the appropriate management strategies.

The new valves described in this article are the latest product of the Research Laboratories of the General Electric Co. Some of them are still in the laboratory stage, others have already found important applications. Some of the larger ones, which have graduated from the laboratory, are waiting for their apprenticeship in industry, there to refine their frailties and complete their preparation as electrical servants. The career that awaits them, though dimly foreseen, appears fascinating. And as surely as history repeats itself, scenes still more romantic, now beyond the horizon, will unfold as we approach them. This is the romance of science. Counting Electrons Let the smallest tube lead the march of review. It is a special Pliotron, designed to measure currents smaller than any yet detected. It goes by the unromantic name of Pliotron FP-54. Fig. 1 shows this miniature tube—miniature in performance rather than size, for it is the size of an ordinary radio receiving tube. Its appearance has nothing distinctive, except the quartz beads above and below the plate, which support the grid. They minimize insulation leakage. In principle, the FP-54 is like any grid-controlled high-vacuum electron tube; but in structure and operating characteristics it is entirely special. An extra "space-charge" grid, maintained at 3 volts positive with respect to the filament, holds back the small but pernicious current of positive ions emitted by the filament; the normal plate voltage is 6 volts, grid bias 3 volts, thoriated-tungsten filament temperature 1700" K., plate current 40 microamperes. These conditions are essential to the avoidance of grid-currents, which may consist not only of insulation leakage and positive ions from the hot filament and from residual gases, but of high-speed electrons from the filament, photo emission from the grid due to the light of the filament, and electron emission caused by X-rays generated by the impact of electrons on the plate.

The cases of no auxiliary ventilation and ventilation with tubing were mathematically modeled, using a turbulent dispersion model. The scooptram that is used to load is modeled as a variable-speed, variable-strength source of pollutants moving in and out of the dead-ended drift. Model predictions are compared to experimental measurements. A parametric analysis was performed to determine the effect of exhaust pipe location and time spent out of the drift, as well as to determine if a relationship existed between CO2 and NO levels. It was concluded from this analysis that when modeling a load-haul-dump cycle, it is necessary to use a model that has the capability of predicting changes in source strength as well as source location. It was also determined that four relevant factors include effective heading height, apparent longitudinal diffusion coefficient, transverse concentration gradient at the face, and average dispersion width of the exhaust jet. As these factors change with heading geometry and ventilation configuration, they were determined experimentally, Carbon dioxide was used as a tracer to calibrate the model; since, knowing the fuel flow rate, it is possible to calculate CO2 production. The above four factors in the computer model were calculated using a regression analysis, comparing predicted local concentrations to measured local concentrations. The model was then verified after this calibration process using additional experimental results. With the calibrated model, it is possible to predict pollutant concentrations at any location in the heading using an engine map and the previously calculated flow field. A parametric analysis shows that the exhaust pipe location can have a significant impact on operator exposure to exhaust gases. It was also shown that NO concentration varies directly with C02 levels. Predictions using the dynamic model are contrasted with constant source strength (pollutant flow rate) results. An analysis of these predictions for computing time-weighted average NO shows the dynamic model predictions of operator exposure to this pollutant to be less than one-half of the value predicted using a constant source model.

This report describes exploration for lead-zinc ores at the Madonna mine between 1945 and 1953 by the Utze Lode Co., the Bureau of Mines, and the company with Government financial aid under the Defense Production Act of 1950. The Madonna mine yielded silver, lead, and zinc with a net smelter value of over $5,000.000. from 1882 to 1924. The mine was inactive from 1924 to 1942 when the Utze Lode Co. acquired the property. Possibilities for finding ore in the mine, especially at depth, were considered favorable. The Utze Lode Co. began rehabilitating the Madonna mine in 1945. An exploration program, which consisted of winze sinking and drifting, failed to produce commercial are.

Conservation is no longer a matter for political discussion; it is a vital element in the future welfare of all nations. Unfortunately, to the minds of many, conservation means the locking up of natural resources, their arbitrary withdrawal, bringing about, in short, a condition of industrial stagnation. Sandstone and shale samples from the Morrison (Late Jurassic) and Dakota formations (Cretaceous) from northwestern New Mexico have been analyzed for the major elements Na, K, Fe and the trace elements Sc, Cr, Co, Rb, Sb, Cs, Ba, Hf, Ta, Th, iJ and the rare earth elements (REE) in whole rock and clay sized fractions by instrumental and delayed neutron activation analysis. The clay sized fraction clearly shows enrichment patterns and halo effects ; whereas, the whole rock fraction does not. Important elemental dispersion halos associated with uranium in sedimentary environments include the REE, Hf, and Sb. The distribution of these halos are due to a combination of complexation, chelation and the orignal paleoenvironments.

The need for the removal of mercury from the precious metals extraction circuits may be influenced by process, environmental, as well as by occupational hazard reasons. In these circuits mercury is mainly present as cyanide complexes. The effectiveness of any stabilization method will be influenced by the high thermodynamic stability mercury-cyano species exhibit in an aqueous solution. In this study, we have investigated the utility of the trisodium salt of trimmercapto-s-triazine (TMT) for precipitation of mercury from the corresponding cyano-complexes. The influence of pH molar ratio of TMT to Hg, coagulant and flocculant additions, excess of free cyanide, as well as the presence of other metal-cyano species on the effectiveness of mercury precipitation were investigated in detail. Also, a "teal world" precious metals mill effluent initially containing ~7 ug/mL (ppm) of Hg was treated and A was found that greater than 99.8% of the mercury was removed from the solution as am insoluble Hg/TMT complex.

"The Griffith Mine is located 200 miles northeast of Winnipeg and is 30 miles south of Red Lake, Ontario. Owned by The Steel Company of Canada Limited and managed by Pickands Mather & Co., it has an annual rated capacity of 1.5 million tons of high-grade iron ore pellets with an analysis of 66.3 per cent iron and 4.5 per cent silica.Development of the mine and construction of the plant got underway in January of 1966 and operations began in February of 1968. The orebodies outcrop on the shore of Bruce lake and run under the lake. The ore in its crude form is a metasedimentary low-grade magnetite and occurs in a highly folded banded formation. The average iron analysis of the crude is 29 per cent and the over-all weight recovery is 32 per cent.In order to mine the portion of the orebody under the lake, the soft varved clay on the lake bottom was hydraulically dredged and a dyke constructed of rock, with till used to provide an impervious seal on the lake side of the dyke, prior to dewatering.Mining is carried out by conventional open-pit tech-niques. Ore dressing is achieved by combining one crushing stage and a two-stage grinding system, with beneficiation by magnetic separation, hydroseparation and flotation. Agglomerating is done with conventional balling drums and pelletizing is carried out in shaft furnaces.Of interest and discussed in detail are the 32-foot autogenous cascade mills ."

Since the discoveries of favorable deposits are becoming increasingly difficult, mining operations shift to lower grade and deeper deposits. The viability of these operations is sensitive to many factors, such as commodity prices and operating costs. Given that a mining corporation has no power to set prices, the focus is directed on minimizing the operating costs. Underground mining operations require a network infrastructure, including shaft, ramps, declines, levels, cross-cuts, raises, winzes, and adit. The design of this network is a costly process. As such, it has a significant potential to reduce development and haulage costs. Furthermore, network design is a continuous process along with development, production, and maintenance throughout mine life. Under the constraints of the turning radius, the gradient, and the obstacle avoidance for haulage network of underground mines, this paper first demonstrates network design and optimization approaches using Dubins path combined with the Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) algorithm. A threshold-based model is developed, providing viable solutions to the network design when the number of declines is high. Furthermore, a three-dimensional Rapid-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm combined with Dubins path is employed as a heuristic solver for obstacle avoidance purposes in the network. Various case studies are conducted to show the applicability of the proposed methods.

San Francisco, CA will host about 1,500 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world during the biannual Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), June 19-22. These professionals are gathering in a city that has seen much under-ground work throughout its history. And, today, the San Francisco region has more than $4.6-billion in tunneling projects under way. The RETC will include three-and-a-half days of technical programming, complete with proceedings, two short courses, two field trips and a host of social activities. In addition, the accompanying exhibit has attracted 127 exhibitors in 152 booths, an RETC record. The following is a brief list of activities that will take place during the conference. The laboratory wear testing capabilities of the Bureau of Mines are described, Wear tests are used to support the Bureau?s research efforts toward reducing the wear of equipment used for mining and minerals processing and any wear involving a loss of strategic or critical materials. The emphasis is on abrasive wear because it accounts for most of the wear losses that occur in mining and minerals processing equipment, Spalling wear, caused by repetitive impact in grinding equipment, also is included, Ten abrasive wear tests, including high- stress and low-stress and two-body and three-body conditions, are described: dry-sand, rubber-wheel abrasive wear; Taber Abraser; abrasion resistance of refractory materials; dry-particle erosive wear; elevated-temperature, dry-particle erosive wear; low-angle slurry pot; jaw crusher gouging wear; ball mill wear; pin-on-drum abrasive wear; and high-speed impact gouging. Two repetitive impact tests are described: ball-on-block impact-spalling and ball-on-ball impact-spalling. Test equipment, procedures, and specimens are described, and typical test results are presented and discussed.

Introduction During the past three years at least fifty strings of 9% nickel steel tubing have exhibited excellent resistance .to the variably severe corrosive conditions typical of many of the sweet condensate wells in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. This experience, and the characteristically outstanding performance of other ?nickel alloy steels under hydrogen sulphide corrosive conditions, dictated the selection of 9% nickel steel tubing for the second well drilled in the sour condensate Pincher Creek field of southwestern Alberta. The damaging effects of the Pincher Creek reservoir fluids on well equipment had been manifested in the discovery well by the rapid and not yet fully understood failure of API Grade N-80 tubing, stainless steel wire lines, and alloy steel fishing tools. Two very unexpected failures in the 9% nickel steel tubing, after only six days of service in production tests, instigated an extensive and continuing investigation to ascertain the probable cause of failure. This discussion presents some of the results obtained thus far which cast a little light on the perplexing behaviour of steels in hydrogen sulphide environments in general, and in sour condensate wells in particular. History of Tubing Failures Walter Marr well No. 1, in which the 9% nickel steel tubing failures occurred, produces from the Madison lime at the depth interval approximately 12,200 to 12,750 feet. The gas-oil ratio is about 26,000 and the gas contains 10.2 per cent hydrogen sulphide and 6.3 per cent carbon dioxide by volume.

The topic of the relationships between energy and particle size has had two very active periods -the first in the early thirties, when the relative merits of Rittinger's and Kick's proposals were vigorously debated; the second in the early fifties, when Bond's Third Theory was published. This second stage has produced several contributions that have provided a clearer picture of energy /size correlations in comminution. Derivations of a general relationship have been made from single-fracture experiments and from the rate of comminution, and both methods arrive at an equation of the type E = AK-11? The constant A in the equation may be regarded as a grindability parameter. In some respects, an understanding of the phenomena associated with comminution is still lacking, and research in this field should therefore be expanded. The Institute has established this lectureship to honor the memory of a great American metallurgist, one whose fame has continued long after his passing. As one scientist recently stated it, "All metallurgical texts gradually become outdated and outmoded, except those of the great Henry Marion Howe." It seems fitting, then, that, once every year, we shouId review, in his honor, some aspects of the science in which he was such a distinguished leader, and also discuss any new data that may help to clarify our concepts. It is my privilege, for which indeed I express the deepest appreciation to this Institute, to offer for consideration a few thoughts on the toughness and fracture of hardened steels. Before proceeding to the data, I wish to express my great indebtedness to many associates whose stimulating discussions, generous contributions of data and cooperation in experiments are gratefully acknowledged. (But I wish to absolve them of any blame that may arise from the way in which their discussions and data have been used!) First, Dr. Edgar C. To enable ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to be used on an equal weight basis with nitroglycerine explosives, smaller diameter bore holes became necessary with consequent modifications to drill steel and burden on holes. Detonation of AN-FO in small diameter holes proved successful both with and without primer charges but some alterations were required to adapt anoloders to the smaller holes.Important factors in training all operators in the new charging method were the retention of improved fragmentation, avoidance of excessive overbreak and keeping wall rock dilution to an absolute minimum. The successful storage of ammonium nitrate in climatic conditions with daily temperature fluctuations above and below the critical 90°F has been achieved.INTRODUCTIONTechnical aspects of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-Fa) blasting agent are well covered in recent literature. This paper deals primarily with the manner of its introduction as the principal explosive underground at Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. and with the many problems encountered in the process. Following reasonably successful experimental firings in June 1962', using granular ammonium nitrate and an anoloder, permission was granted by theWestern Australian Mines Department to carry out test work in selected areas of the mine. Scandium is an important industrial metal for which demand is projected to increase in the future. Although many Sc deposits are secondary, Sc is scavenged by clinopyroxene during fractional crystallization of primary, mafic-ultramafic magmas. Sc may thus occur in sub-economic concentrations in mafic-ultramafic intrusions. In this work, we present new data on the concentration of Sc in the Bushveld Complex (BC) of South Africa. The eastern and western limbs of the BC are considered to be largely pristine, primary magmatic deposits, whereas the northern limb shows evidence of largescale, localized crustal contamination. Samples from the primary magmatic cumulates of the eastern limb, from the mineralized Flatreef of the northern limb, and from the crustal-contaminated Footwall Assimilation Zone (FAZ) of the Flatreef were analysed for Sc. Despite the FAZ containing abundant clinopyroxene, interpreted to have recrystallized from the original cumulates in the presence of melted sedimentary rocks, no significant differences are seen in the concentration of Sc compared to other cumulate rocks of the BC containing less-abundant clinopyroxene. The concentration of Sc in the analysed samples is mainly controlled by mineralogy, with anorthosites, chromitites, and harzburgites containing under 20 ppm, and norites and pyroxenites containing 20–40 ppm. The parapyroxenites of the FAZ are less enriched in Sc than expected, suggesting that Sc may have been lost during alteration and recrystallization.

Current practices in electrolytic winning and refining of copper , nickel and zinc are reviewed from the point of view of their respective energy requirements. The electrical energy requirements of these processes are broken down in to the individual components, which belong to two basic categories: (a) thermodynamic energy requirements (G of the desired reaction) : (b) energy losses (anode and cathode polarizations, ohmic drops in the electrolyte and in the cell hardware, energy losses due to unwanted side reactions and electrical shorts). The individual energy components are separately examined for each electrolytic process and the potential for energy saving in these processes is discussed. It is shown that many potential energy-saving measures are uneconomical at the present time, as they increase over-all operating costs. The discussion is focused on those approaches which hold most promise for the future.

This circular, which is a revision and combination of two previous publications,3 4/ presents information on the different types of equipment that may be used to analyze mine atmospheres, with particular reference to the application and limitations of each type. Such information is frequently requested by mining companies, State mining departments, and other agencies concerned with safety in mining who wish advice regarding methods of analysis of mine atmospheres and the equipment necessary for establishing laboratories for that purpose. Since the Haldane-type apparatus is particularly applicable to the accurate determination of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and combustible gases such as methane in mine atmospheres, that apparatus and the method of operation are described in detail. The circular presents results of a critical study of the accuracy attainable with the Haldane-type apparatus in the determination of methane in concentrations of the order of 0.25 percent, by volume. Analytical procedures involved in the other methods discussed are presented in publications referenced in this circular. Information is given also on the various accessory equipment needed in a laboratory for the analysis of mine atmospheres, and suggestions on laboratory design are included. The elimination of ultrafine (<10 µm) clay particles is essential to the treatment of abandoned coal-washing plant tailings for the recovery of the remaining coal fraction by enhanced gravity processing. Effective hydrocyclone classification is required to remove this fraction. The highly variable composition and particle size distribution of such wastes creates significant difficulties in the operation of hydrocyclones for such classifications. Hydrocyclone laboratory investigations and their plant setup require lengthy or time-consuming tests. The use of empirical models of such classifications frequently requires modification to correspond to actual operating conditions. Results of the evaluation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to predict hydrocyclone classification of coal-washing plant tailings are presented. Results of the standard k-epsilon turbulence, SSG turbulence and large eddy simulation CFD models are compared with the results obtained from analyzed hydrocyclone classifications. The CFD models tested are shown to be very effective in the simulation of hydrocyclone classifications for the determination of the classification particle size and adequate for determining the efficiency index values for many applications. The large eddy simulation model was identified as the most precise, but it is recommended that all three models be improved simulations of classifications above and below the classification particle size.
