"The diameter of improved columns adopted by the original DJM Method had been 1000 mm, however, in order to comply with the social need for construction cost reduction, the Expanded Dry Jet Mixing (EX-DJM) Method with maximum column diameter expanded to 1300 mm was developed between 1998 and 2001 and has been widely applied since then. From the first application of EX-DJM in January 2002 for a first construction project, the total volume of improved soil has reached 325,000 m3 in 17 projects up to September 2014. Because of the advantages of the EX-DJM such as reduction of construction costs and periods leading to reduction in the number of improved columns, adoption of this method is expected to increase in the future. This paper describes the advantages of the EX-DJM, its construction results and case examples including those applied to restoration projects after the Great East Japan Earthquake, 2011.1. BACKGROUND OF DEVELOPMENTThe Dry Jet Mixing (DJM) Method is a soil stabilization method in which a powdery or granular binder is pneumatically fed into and mixed with soft soil to induce chemical reactions that stabilize and strengthen the soil. It was developed by government - private collaboration in Japan between 1977 and 1979. Up to March 2014, the total volume of soil improved by DJM method reached 33,500,000 m3. The initial diameter of improved columns of the original DJM Method was 1000 mm. In order to comply with the social need for construction cost reduction, the Expanded Dry Jet Mixing (EX-DJM) Method with maximum column diameter 1300 mm was developed between 1998 and 2001.2. ADVANTAGES OF EX-DJMThe construction equipment for the EX-DJM consists of two major parts, which are DJM machine and binder plant are shown in Fig. 1.The construction machine is of double mixing-shaft type with its column diameter expanded to 1200mm or 1300mm. In association with the increase in the column diameter, the binder feeder has also increased its discharge rate by approximately 1.69 times. The sedimentary iron ores of Alsace-Lorraine, France have very high phosphorous contents that average 0.7% and are as much as 2.19% P. Ores from the Tucquegnieux and Joeuf mines have been studied by cathodoluminescence microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and electron microprobe analysis in order to fully characterize the mineralogy, size, shape, and distribution of the deleterious phosphate grains. The phosphorous occurs as collophane, a carbonate fluorapatite, in ten morphological forms, most abundantly as microcoprolites, but also as intraclasts, concentric layers, and cortices in ooids, phosphate replaced ooids and bioclasts, phosphatiC shells, fossil infillings and internal molds, fish teeth, phosphatiC laminae, and cements between the goethite ooids. About 95% of the phosphate grains are sufficiently large that relatively fine grinding fol'lowed by reverse flotation would be expected to be effective in significantly diminishing the phosphorous content of the concentrates.

Affected by the disturbance of blasting activities, deformation instability and rock dynamic disasters are prone to occur in deep hard rock roadways. Thus, it is particularly necessary to understand the failure behavior of rocks and roadways under dynamic loads. In this study, a series of impact loading tests were carried out on sandstone samples with and without a circular cavity by a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test system. The mechanical properties and energy evolution of the samples were systematically investigated, and the effect of cavity size was analyzed. The results showed that the presence of the cavity in the samples weakens the dynamic compressive strength by more than 10%, and the peak strain and brittleness are also reduced to varying degrees. Under dynamic loading, spalling cracks occur first on the roof and floor of the cavity, and then different numbers of shear cracks are formed on the sample diagonals. The eventual shear failure mode is the result of the connection of the shear cracks and the cavity. As the cavity radius increases, the dissipated energy density and fractal dimension both grow accordingly, leading to smaller and smaller rock fragments. The dynamic failure behavior of the circular cavity can be well explained based on the dynamic stress distribution law. Overall, this study can provide a reference for the study of the mechanism of rock burst in deep roadways.

This paper presents a novel application of the boundary element method for numerical modelling of the seismic activity and hazard that is associated with the shaft pillar extraction at Bambanani mine in South Africa. In the numerical model, the tabular mining excavations are represented by displacement discontinuity elements, and to accommodate crush, shear, and fault slip seismic events, the numerical model is populated with additional displacement discontinuity elements that represent modelled crush- and shear-type failures in the rockmass. Crush-type failures are evaluated by applying the limit equilibrium method and a Hoek-Brown strength criterion, and shear-type failures are evaluated by applying a Coulomb-friction strength criteria to Ortleppshear and geological features. In this paper, the modelling results are presented as time history analyses of modelled potency from 1 January 2010 to 30 June 2022 and normalised exceedance rates for different mining periods using an upper-truncated power law. The normalised exceedance rates of seismic events that have moment magnitude Mw ≥ 1.0 are lowest for the initial mining period (26 events per year) and highest for the final mining period (218 events per year). The relative errors of the modelled potency and normalised exceedance rates are typically less than 10% or 15%, which suggests that the modelling methodology is appropriate for medium- and longer-term forecasting of seismic activity and hazard, as presented in this paper. Shorter-term forecasting is not considered in this paper.

The stripping of coal with mechanical. equipment has progressed since the introduction of the first steam-powered shovel for the retóval of overburden at a mine in Pittsburg, Kans., in 1877...From the smart steam-powered shovels with dippers of less than a cubic yard capacity, small digging radius, and shovels that required manual moving, the trend has been toward large-capacity machines. Steam as power has been replaced largely by electricity, gasoline, and Diesel fuel, and dipper capacity as great as 35 cubic yards has been attained. Shovels and drag lines are self-propelled and revolve through 360°. The cost of these large-capacity modern machines is great, and in order to assure the return of the investment during the life of the property the reserve of coal in the area to be mined must be large;" Many comparatively small areas of coal suitable for strip mining exist, but these areas probably could not be mined, profitably with this large equip- ment. Therefore, heavy equipment has not been used in small areas because of the high cost in place of this equipment, the time and Atpense required to transport the machines to the mine site, and the construction of power lines if the machines are electrical powered.. Scrapers and light excavating equipment ane mobile, and the investment cost is not high. These units have been used in sirring the coal in small areas. A study to determine the methods in, yogue, and economic considerations involved in the use of such equipment was undertaken, and the information obtained is discussed in this report.

The wetting behavior of liquid polymers at solid surfaces and the adhesion forces involved at polymer-filler interfaces should always be considered in the fabrication of high quality polymer composites, including those made with mineral fillers. Spontaneous polymer spreading over the filler surface is a basic condition in the fabrication of the polymer-mineral composites. In this regard, the wetting and adhesion characteristics of polymer-mineral systems are reviewed in this contribution. It appears that several aspects of wetting phenomena at mineral filler surfaces are not well described in the literature and require further systematic study. Specifically, it is clear from this review that efforts should be made to determine the effects of mineral surface contamination (including surface hydration) on wetting and adhesion phenomena, and to determine the wetting characteristics of molten polymers at mineral filler surfaces. It is expected that any improved fundamental understanding of wetting and adhesion phenomena for the polymer-mineral composites will provide the basis for further technological development.

THE Sub-province of Benguet is in the North Central part of the Island of Luzon. Baguio, the capital, is situated on a piateau 5000 ft. above sea level, and is the main health resort of the Philippines. It is rapidly becoming the favorite resort for the China Coast as well, and has many miles of beautiful, curving drives with nearly every pine-covered knoll surmounted by a summer home. The United States Army has a recreation post here, known as Camp John Hay, with a well-equipped hospital, and there is a Country Club with a good golf course adjacent. The weather during the winter months and until late spring is ideal. The business center consists mainly of Chinese and Japanese stores, several hotels, and a large public market, in which are displayed all of the vegetables of the temperate zone, which are flown near Baguio, and many tropical and other products brought up from below. This district is reached from the Coastal Plain either by the old Benguet road built in 1904 by the United States Government, or by the Naguilian road, built some years later. The former is now a toll road, with a line of stages operating over it to and from Des Mortes in connection with the government-owned rail- road. Auto travel from Manila is also along this road, the trip from Manila to Baguio requiring about seven hours, following up the great valley north of Manila for nearly 150 miles to the lower end of the Benguet road, and thence to Baguio, 25 miles. This is an interesting, scenic trip; the road is especially famous for the zig zags where it climbs out of the canyon of the Bued River to the plateau. In the September number of the National Geographic Magazine, a fine aerial picture of this road, as well as of other interesting points in various parts of the Philippines, appears. Freight for the district is taken in mainly over the Naguilian road connecting with the railroad at Bauang. This route follows the ridges of the mountain slope with broad vistas and views of the coast.

The number of fatalities from mine explosions for the fiscal year 1945 dropped below that of the year before; continued improvement over the record of the years from 1940 to 1945 is hopeful, but the number of reported explosions has increased rather than diminished, and the number of victims claimed by explosions is often more definitely a factor of chance than forethought. Mine fires and explosions can be eliminated through the methods now well-known to those well-informed in matters pertaining to safety in mining but ignored by many coal-mine operators and employees who follow procedures of the past or their own short cuts, regardless of disasters that may result: Tried and proved safety measures for preventing mine fires and explosions have been recommended to the mining public repeatedly, yet only a relatively small but far-sighted minority have adopted these measures and made them a part of operating practice. That far more explosion disasters did not occur in 1945 is fortunate. In 1945 a coal-mine fire of electrical origin caused heavy loss of life, while several others from the same cause were controlled with but few fatalities; this hazard is now being curbed temporarily to some degree after the bad record of the two preceding years, but a real solution of the problem has not been reached, although cooperating committees trying to produce at least some answer have made progress.

A modified Cuprex Metal Extraction Process (CMEP) leach process was used to extract Cu. Ni and Co from a complex sulphide concentrate. The standard leach was modified to a two-stage countercurrent leach which provided emf control of the copper SX feed and minimized iron dissolution. A flowsheet was developed to recover the base metals and silver from the leach solution and gold and platinum group metals from the leach residue which was predominantly elemental sulphur. Techniques required to maintain an iron balance in the system including pressure oxidation and solvent extraction are described.

The combined value of production of natural abrasives, which include tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, staurolite, and emery, increased about 4% in 1990. The decrease in the value of tripoli production was the result of a decrease in total production. Emery decreased owing to a decrease in the volume of the material produced. Special silica stone experienced a decrease in unit value and in the quantity produced. Garnet showed an 8 % increase in quantity and an 8 % increase in unit value. Staurolite increased about 38 % in the quantity produced, and the value of production increased about 36 %. The fused aluminum oxide industry showed a 12 % decline in the quantity produced and a 13 % decline in the value of production. The silicon carbide industry saw a 47 % decrease in the quantity produced and a 23 % decrease in the value of production. Combined, the industries decreased 17 % in quantity and value compared with those of 1990.

In the present number of Mining and Metallurgy, issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Institute, it appears appropriate to chronicle a few of the interesting incidents respecting its early life. We are fortunate in being able to cull the following notes from unpublished manuscripts of Doctor Raymond and Doctor Drinker, than whom no other members could have written with greater exactness and fidelity. THE seventh decade of the 19th century may be said to have marked an. era in the history of the world. Industrially and .commercially it was marked by the wide application and utilization of discoveries already made, which came to their full effect at this period in steamships, railways, telegraph and cable lines; the standardization of parts in machines, from watches to locomotives; the use of 'dynamite, antiseptic surgery, the open-hearth steel process, the compressed-air rock-drill, the electric generator, and the Gatling gun. Through the opening of the Suez canal in 1870 the maritime trade of the world was revolutionized, sailing vessels were supplanted by steamers, while ocean cables and ocean "tramps" brought about far more rapid movement of commerce than had before been experienced. Politically, this period was marked by the sudden birth of the German empire and the beginning of that intensive internal development of the national resources of that empire in preparation for colonial extension and war, the amazing result of which has been made evident by the recent world conflict. "INTRODUCTION The Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, is investigating cushioned blasting at the Explosives Testing Station, Bruceton, Pa. The general interests of this investigation are practical and relate particularly to safety. The immediate concern is an application of cushioned blasting in coal mining.In cushioned blasting, various means are employed to reduce the intensity of the application of energy in an explosive action in a borehole. The primary object is to increase the efficiency of the use of explosives. Cushioned blasting is designed to save the energy usually lost in excessive shattering and in this way to effect economies and to produce increased proportions of desirable lump coal. That this saving should lead to greater efficiency is indicated by an analogy with the theory and experience of size-redaction by crushing or grinding from which it is known that a large proportion of the energy consumed is expended in producing the smaller sizes (26),3/. Aside from these considerations, increasing the yield of lump coal is important in practice because larger sizes of coal usually sell at higher prices. Some statistics published in England in 1934 (63) illustrate the economic origin of the interest in increasing yields of lump coal; these indicate for three sizes of coal that as the size decreases the value decreases in the approximate series 3:1.5:1, thus:"

In the first paper of this series (R. 1. 4333) on the cooperative work with the Eagle-Pitcher Mining & Smelting Co., changes in the nature of the sinter feed were measured by corresponding changes in the retorting temperatures necessary to distill zinc at the best rates; the firing schedules summarized such changes. In this paper, third of the series, are noted same of the changes in practice that were brought about by the need to treat more fused, glassy, and "hard" sinter, as the operators qualify it. Losses of uncondensed zinc were increased by adding zinc-bearing materials from which? the zinc was readily distillable to hard sinter requiring higher-temperatures for zinc distillation. The rates of zinc distillation were increased by grinding the fuel finer; there were few benefits and loss of dust on grinding the sinter finer, unless the fine ?coal and fine sinter were brought into contact by pelletizing, and the pellets made but little dust.

The Federal Bureau of Mines examined a low-temperature tar obtained from a small-scale commercial unit for carbonizing North Dakota lignite for products that might be important to the economic processing of the tar. Tie tar may be divided into three distinct parts: (1) Tar acids, 45 volume-percent; (2) tar bases, 1 volume percent; and (3) neutral compounds, 54 volume-percent. It has a boiling range of approximately 150° to 380° C. (the decomposition temperature) and yields 18 weight-percent as hard pitch. The tar distillate up to 365° C. may be separated as: (1) Tar acids, 48 volume-percent; (2) tar bases, 1 volume-percent; and (3) hydrocarbons, 51 volume-percent. The tar-acid distillate, boiling to approximately 265° C., was characterized in some detail; the neutral fractions and the tar bases were less thoroughly examined. In general, as might be expected of a primary low-temperature tar, the lower boiling fractions are less in quantity compared with the usual high-temperature tar. The homologous series of each major class appears to be rather complete, although some components are present in very small amounts. The tar is quite unstable thermally, and might be more conveniently processed by extraction methods rather than by distillation procedures. The neutral fraction of the tar is highly aromatic, and might be considered as base stock for the production of liquid fuels.

The Dunkleberg district is in the Flint Creek Range of the northern Rocky Mountains, about 45 miles northwest of Butte, Mont. Silver - lead and zinc mineralization occurs over an area 4 miles long from north to south and 1 to 2 miles wide from west to east. Ore in appreciable quantity has been produced, mostly from the Forest Rose group of mines in the southern part of the district. The Forest Rose mine was the largest producer of lead and the Wasa mine, a mile farther south, the main producer of zinc. The total output of ore from these properties during World War II was 113,000 tons, or 98.2 percent of the total recorded production of the district. The Wasa mine was examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer2/ in 1944. Subsequent investigations during 1946, 1947, and 1948 included trenching and drilling Fn the Wasa area and examination of the Forest Rose and other mines.

"Existence of anisotropic Curie temperature materials [E. R. Callen, Phys. Rev. 124, 1373 (1961); J. Appl. Phys. 32 S221 (1961)] is a longstanding prediction - materials that become paramagnetic at a lower temperature along certain crystal directions while remaining magnetically ordered in other directions up to a higher temperature. Validating Callen's theory, we show that all directions within the basal plane of monoclinic F e1Ss (pyrrhotite) single crystal remain ordered up to 603 K while the c-axis becomes paramagnetic at 225 K. Results prompt a re-evaluation of existing magnetic materials with a focus on magnetic characteristics along different crystal orientations above instead of below the ordering temperatures. Theoretical guidelines for identifying new materials with large anisotropy of Curie temperature are also given, and analysis protocol to characterize them in a self-consistent manner is discussed. Materials with such a large directional dependence of Curie temperature open the possibility for uniquely new devices and phenomena, including energy storage and spintronics devices.IntroductionThis paper is an overview of our recently published work on anisotropic Curie temperature materials [l]. As a background, ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic materials are characterized by a critical temperature below which magnetic interactions prevail over thermal agitation, leading to the appearance of a spontaneous magnetization. Above this critical point, called the Curie temperature, thermal energy eventually overcomes magnetic interactions and the material becomes paramagnetic.It is less well known that the Curie temperature varies with the orientation of the crystal. In ordinary ferromagnets this orientation dependence of Curie temperature is negligible because of the vanishingly small ratio of anisotropy to exchange energy, i.e., the spherical or isotropic exchange term dominates. Thus Curie temperature in ordinary ferromagnets appears to be an isotropic property, and assigning it a single characteristic ordering temperature suffices. However, a 'small' difference is not equivalent to being the 'same', and under appropriate set of conditions the anisotropy of Curie temperature is predicted to become appreciable, as discussed in the following.In formulating the theory of 'anisotropic magnetization' [2, 3] E. R. Callen and H. B. Callen first discussed the ""interesting possibility"" of anisotropic Curie temperature [2] or ACT; Callen and Callen noted that it was W. J. Carr, Jr. who initially raised this question, and they discussed it in detail at the Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (NY, November 1960), see footnote on page 320 of Ref. [2]. Soon thereafter, E. R. Callen developed the theory underlying the anisotropy of Curie temperature and conditions conducive to its observation [4, 5]."

Geotechnical design plays a key role in mine design. I A proper geotechnical design provides a safe working environment and facilitates efficient mining operation. There are mainly three design approaches I) judgmental, based on observational and experiential facts, 2) empirical, based on empirical design formulae, and 3) analytical, incorporating numerical analysis. Most design applications are based on the design methods one and two as mentioned earlier. However, complexities arise in deep underground mining operations and deep open pit mines. These complexities and difficult geological environment introduce more uncertainties and simple empirical formulae would not be adequate as a design tool. These situations require numerical modelling and analysis of the design problems including interpretation of the results obtained from the analysis. There are several tools available for performing the numerical modelling and analysis. A brief review of the available tools was addressed earlier (Basu and Kuruppu, 1995). The authors selected ANSYS (a general purpose finite element analysis tool) for use in mining geomechanics and geotechnical design. This paper includes several examples demonstrating the applicability of this software in designing structures applicable to mining geomechnics. The authors hope that the design examples will demonstrate the use of the numerical modelling and analysis application in excavation design.
