"Solidification of metal aluminum and aluminum alloys is modeled on uneven surfaces characterized by sinusoidal curves. Wavelengths and amplitudes of these sinusoidal surfaces are varied to study their effects on processes like solidification, macro-segregation and inverse segregation. Solidification and macro-segregation are modeled using a slightly modified form of a stabilized finite element method developed recently to model high Rayleigh number solidification and porous media flows. For pure metal solidification, the effect of varying amplitudes and wavelengths is observed in heat transfer, fluid-flow ~nd phase change processes. The relative importance of shrinkage driven flow and solutal convection on the redistribution of solute for an alloy solidifying in a rectangular cavity is compared. The analysis is then extended by modifying one of the surfaces to a sinusoid. In this case the effects of varying amplitudes and wavelengths are studied in heat transfer, fluid flow, phase change, macro-segregation and inverse segregation processes.1 IntroductionTransport phenomenon during solidification of alloys is a major cause ofcasting defects such as segregation, micro-voids, hot tears, porosity, internal and surface cracks. Heat flow across metal and mold surfaces directly affects the phase change process and plays an important role in determining freezing conditions within the metal. In alloys, natural convection and shrinkage play an important role in determining the final solute redistribution, macrosegregation and evolution of solid macromorphology. Surface unevenness plays an important role during the early stages of solidification. It influences the heat transfer rate and fluid flow in the melt, which in turn affect the morphology and shape of the solid-liquid interface. The effect of surface unevenness on solute redistribution is important during solidification of alloys, where solute driven flow in the mushy zone is prominent. Thevik and Mo in [7] and [8] used a one dimensional model for studying surface segregation and macrosegregation in alloys under the influence of exudation and solidification shrinkage. Air-gap formation in their model was expressed through a variable convective heat transfer coefficient at the boundary. Tsai et al. in [3] and [4] have modeled macrosegregation in an aluminum-copper alloy driven by shrinkage and solutal convection. They used a single domain model based on mixture theory and solved the transport equations using finite difference methods. Our aim is to model solidification of aluminum followed by macrosegregation and inverse segregation in aluminum-copper alloys on uneven surfaces by finite element methods. These surfaces are modeled as sinusoids characterized by amplitudes, ?s and wavelengths, As, By varying As and ?s, changes in heat transfer, fluid flow, phase-change and macrosegregation are studied."

A preliminary program dated April 25, 1974 was prepared for Development Engineering, Inc. (D.E.I.) on research and development, laboratory; field and other engineering studies for the disposal of retorted oil shale. This program was revised and published as a final document dated December 17, 1974. The document included a discussion on the peculiarity of retorted shale materials to be investigated and a discussion of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. ThE Golden Cycle Mining and Reduction Co. operates its custom mill at Colorado Springs on Cripple Creek ores exclusively. These ores are straight sulfo-tellurides, with practically no base metals such as Pb, CU, Zn, As, or Sb. Upon entering the mill, the ore all passes through the sampler to storage bins, where beds of 5000 tons each are made to insure uniformity in roasting. Classification of ORes For efficiency, it has been found advisable to separate the ores into two classes according to their lime content. Other constituents have their effect, such as alumina and magnesia, but, speaking generally, these are roughly proportional to the lime, which, as CaO, is used as the indicator. Class A contains not more than 2 per cent. CaO and comprises about 66 per cent. of the ore treated. Class B contains over 2 per cent. CaO, and comprises 34 per cent. of the ore treated. Each roaster will handle 50 per cent. more of class A ore than of class B, with practically the same results. This necessitates changing the rate of feed for each new bed and tends toward a poor roast and loss of tonnage at each change.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a survey of eight shearer longwall operations to identify factors that affect respirable dust generation from longwall roof supports. The longwalls surveyed were in coal seams located in different geographic regions of the United States. Data were collected on mining (geologic) conditions, support design, operational characteristics, and amount of respirable dust generated from roof supports. Analysis indicated that mining conditions are the main factors that affect the generation of dust during roof support movement. Both roof strength and depth of cover above the coal seam showed relationships with the amount of support dust generated. Several practices are currently employed to effectively control roof support dust; however, some of these controls are limited. More research and development is needed to improve dust control technology for longwall roof supports.

The close proximity of cobalt and nickel on the Periodic Table and their frequent occurrence together in nature means that their separation in primary hydrometallurgical flowsheets is not only often necessary, but requires the use of innovative chemistry to achieve high selectivity. Today, increasingly stringent demands for the high-purity cobalt and nickel salts required for battery applications in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and solar applications are again challenging the state of the art. The evolution of cobalt–nickel separations is traced from the basic precipitation technologies employed in 1960s, through commissioning of the first cobalt solvent-extraction plant in South Africa in 1974, to the commercialisation of organophosphinic-acid extractants (which provided a step-change improvement in selectivity) and their eventual widespread use in the 1980s and ’90s. This was followed later by their sulphur analogue, which enabled different possibilities for laterite processing in the new millennium. Separations in chloride media, which take advantage of the different speciation chemistries, and nickel extraction by oximes in ammoniacal systems are also discussed. More recently, chelating and solvent-impregnated resins have added further dimensions to the possibilities for flowsheet design and enabled higher purity products to be attained from both primary and secondary sources. Selected case studies and flowsheets are described.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the role that individual factors play in health and safety (H&S) outcomes in the mining industry. Two surveys, one measuring self-reported routine safety performance and one measuring individual perceived competence in the non-routine knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) critical to emergency response, were administered to two samples of mineworkers in separate research studies over a 2-year period (N=2,020 and 696, respectively). Eight demographic items were common to both surveys and their associations with each performance outcome were tested in response to a series of exploratory research questions.

In this paper the utilisation of building information models (BIM) and construction automation on building sites is discussed. A lot of research has been carried out to develop new applications for using BIM to assist construction site planning, different operations and logistics. The methods of production control and management on site utilize BIM together with machine control and navigation systems. In Finland machine control systems and the automation of construction equipment is widely used in infrastructure construction. Recently similar methods have been introduced also in building construction. This paper describes some latest Finnish examples where BIM-software is used for the planning, execution and control of building construction operations. University of Oulu has studied methods and technologies to capitalize BIM-models. The research has been mainly in infrastructure construction but the activities have recently been extended to building construction. In this paper a BIM-based tower crane operation and control system is discussed as a case study. The aim of this study was to highlight the potential areas were automation can increase the crane productivity and improve site operations and logistics. The construction site managers and tower crane operators interviewed in this study were experienced in using BIM-models on site.

Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). The Grampian Highlands and English Lake District evolved as part of the American and European continental plates, respectively, and were separated by the Iapetus Ocean until they were tectonically juxtaposed during the late stages of the Caledonian orogeny. The similarity in the controls of the distribution of gold pathfinder elements and gold mineralisation in the two regions thus provides important information for understanding the genesis of gold deposits in comparable tectonic settings elsewhere. The data presented are inconsistent with models that invoke a juvenile source of gold or its pathfinder elements. Instead, they support a model whereby gold and its pathfinders were initially concentrated in volcano-sedimentary sequences in rapidly subsiding, tectonically controlled basins and in associated volcanic rocks. Remobilisation and mineralisation occurred subsequently, probably as a result of an increase in oxygen fugacity associated with the influx of granite magmas into the crust and the establishment of hydrothermal convective circulation systems

The existing construction and demolition (C and D) waste recycling technologies and standards have been essentially focused on the production and use of coarse recycled aggregates. Very few papers focus on the production of recycled sand, although some previous results show that fine aggregates fraction represents around 40 to 60% (in mass) of the Brazilian waste and it is usually used as road sub-base or disposed in landfills. The quality of the recycled aggregate is strictly related to the content of porous and low strength phases, mainly the patches of cement remaining on recycled aggregate surface. Some technologies have already been described in the literature, even though, to the moment none of these technologies has clearly succeeded in reaching the large market available. This paper presents a summary of the main properties of the sand produced from C and D waste by tertiary crushing at vertical shaft impact crusher (VSI). Additionally mineral processing technologies were applied on the attained product, such as gravity concentration by shaking table and spirals and removal of cement paste by attrition. The main properties of recycled sand are discussed and compared to the previous C and D waste, respectively: particle size distribution, particle shape, chemical composition, cement paste content and porosity. The results demonstrates that the crushing allowed producing a VSI-sand with low porosity and water absorption due to the increasing on the content of silicates from natural rock phases and increasing liberation between these phases and porous cement paste; the particles from the attained product presented also a better shape (sphericity and aspect ratio). The attrition tests assayed on VSI recycled fine aggregates accomplished a further selective disaggregation of cement paste and other porous materials - the porosity was reduced from 10% to 7%. The concentration by shaking table at narrow sieve fractions led to a product with low porosity and reduced content of cement paste, however, concentration on spirals did not succeed since separation was performed essentially by the size of the particles. The heavy product from shaking table represented almost 75% in weight and has less than 60% recovery of CaO+LOI, and expressive reduction on porosity. The aim of producing sand from construction and demolition waste through mineral processing unit operations changes the recycling approach and contributes for up cycling the recycled sand. The exhaustion of sand deposits on Brazilian large centers, the increasing price and the construction boom encourages the development of alternative materials as construction raw material. The Bureau of Mines has devised and demonstrated a process for recovering Ni and Co from low-grade domestic laterites. The process consists of four major steps: (1) reduction roast, (2) ammoniacal leach, (3) solvent extraction, and (4) electrowinning. Several solid-liquid separation steps are required that affect the economics of the overall pro-cess. In this study, two techniques for solid-liquid separation, centrifugation and thickening, were investigated. This report presents the results of (1) laboratory and pilot plant studies to determine parameters for sizing centrifuges and thickeners and (2) an economic study of the two techniques, based on the requirements of a commercial-size (5,OOO-tpd) laterite processing plant. Sizing and other equipment-related recommendations, based on data from the Bureau's studies, were obtained from commercial manufacturers. The costs of thickening and centrifugation, including all the unit operations affected, were determined by the Bureau's process evaluation group. The total operating costs ~or separation using the two techniques (including depreciation on the capital cost of equipment) were found to be quite close: $17.26 per ton of laterite for centrifugation and $18.15 per ton of laterite for thickening. For centrifugal separation, the greatest cost was found to be the initial capital cost for the separation equipment; using thickeners, the greatest cost was for re-agent recovery.

"The number of persons fatally injured in the petroleum industry in California in 1930 was 50, a decrease of 20.6 per cent from 1929, when 63 men accidentally lost their lives. The decrease in the number of fatalities for 1930 has caused the first downward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1927 and is coincident with a period of little active development in new fields, the shutting in of many wells, and reduced activity in the older fields of the State. That a direct relationship exists between the number of accidental deaths and the rapidity of new field development is particularly emphasized by the fact that in 1929, a year of intensive field development in California, 48 men were killed in the drilling and producing division, whereas in 1930, a year of less development work, only 25 men were killed in this division,The figures for the average number of drilling and producing wells in 1930 decreased appreciably from comparable figures for 1929 and a greater percentage of producing wells were shut—in in 1930 than in 1929."

Contract Incentives have long been employed in the underground hardrock industry as a tool to influence employee performance, enhance productivity, and control labor costs. While traditionally structured to establish a direct correlation between performance and compensation, many contract programs have evolved into elaborate systems that promote strategies often viewed as independent of productivity. This paper presents the findings of research into these contract incentives and was conducted with the cooperation of 33 mines utilizing a spectrum of employee compensation and incentive programs. Emphasis of this analysis focuses on the types of production contracts observed and their role with respect to employee earnings.

This information should be of benefit to any company or individual planning the development of now coal mines in the area or the expansion of present operations.

A method for the determination of the gas content of coal seams is presented which improves upon existing methods. The method makes use of a gravitational technique for measurement of the gas desorbed. The amount of lost gas is estimated by determining an empirical relationship relating the desorption of gas with time for each sample separately. This is to replace the assumption that desorp- tion follows a square root law with time. Laboratory investigations have been conducted which indicate that the square root desorption law does not hold good for carbon dioxide. Results of investigations on various factors influencing the technique are presented. It is shown that co-efficients of the empirical equation are dependent upon the elapsed time and the period of observation. Data about gas pressure measurements is presented and it is concluded that gas pressure can be approxi- mated to 0.6 times the pressure below a column of water equal to the depth of cover. The Government of New South Wales has granted approval for Hunter Valley Aluminium Pty., Ltd" and Alcan Australia Ltd. to proceed with the building of an aluminum smelter at Lochinvar and the expansion of a smelter at Kurri Kurri. Construction of the smelters is expected to start as soon as the consortium is finalized in early 1982. The smelters are part of a plan to increase Australia's aluminum capacity fivefold to 1.5 million tons by the mid-1980's. CHILE Construction of a $61 million lithium carbonate plant in northern Chile will be started in early 1983 by Sociedad Chilena del Litio Ltdao Production is scheduled to begin in 1984 with an initial capacity of 6,350 tons of lithium carbonate produced from a brine deposit. The firm is owned 55% by Foote Mineral Company, of Exton, Pennsylvania, and 45% by Corporacion de Fomento de la Produccion-CORFO.

"In 2013, as the prices of precious metals dropped, investors moved their positions to equity markets for higher returns. As a result, the price of gold dropped further to below US$1200 per ounce, prompting additional substantial outflows from gold investments. In response to lagging gold prices, major gold producers initiated large asset write-downs and cost-cutting programmes. In 2015, this trend continues and gold mining stocks are close to lows not seen since the global financial crisis (GFC) of 2008. In the current economic climate many projects have marginal economics, and the number of projects that have competitive development and production costs is declining. A competitive edge is particularly important with the decreasing grades of orebodies, increasing complexity of the mineralogy, and increasingly demanding environmental constraints. In addition, higher cost producers seek to optimize their process t o reduce operating costs.This paper presents some highlights of three case studies on optimization of gold leaching strategies that improved the economics of brownfield projects. Processing of sulphide-bearing ores was optimized by using the synergy between cyanide, lead nitrate, and oxygen. The outcomes were significant reduction of retention times while maintaining or increasing gold extraction and reducing cyanide addition and effluent treatment costs. A stirred tank reactor experimental programme led to direct implementation of reliable leaching strategies from laboratory scale to production. This approach resulted in savings of $2.2 million to $15.2 million on the three brownfield projects discussed in this paper."

Levi Holbrook was born in Westboro, Mass., March 7, 1836. He was a descendant of John Holbrook, who came from England in 1660 and settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Mr. Holbrook was prepared for college at Williston Seminary, East-hampton, Mass., and after one year spent in the West, he entered Yale. He was a, member of Phi Beta Kappa and of Linonia. During the six months following his graduation he was in Boston, under medical treatment for his cyes; then he took a horseback trip across the Rocky Mountains to the Columbia River and back, and resided in Danville, Va., for a time. From 1860 to 1863, as his eyes permitted, he was a student of modern languages and literature in Cambridge, Mass., part of the time being a resident graduate at Harvard University. Finally, however, he was obliged to abandon the idea of a literary life and from 1864 to 1867 he was engaged in financial business in Boston. The following year, he spent in New York, and then traveled for a year in Europe, Egypt and Asia Minor. In 1871, he returned to New York City. Mr. Holbrook was a member of the New England Historic Gcncalogical Society, the Society of Colonial Wars, and the Sons of the Revolution, was registrar general of the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America from 1915 to 1920, and had been governor of the New York society of that order. He was also a member of the American Fine Arts Society, the Order of the Cincinnati, the American Geographical Society (of which he was a councillor and secretary). and the Geographical Society of America. He joined the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1878, and served as manager from 1895 to 1897. Mr. Holbrook died on July 26, 1922, from organic heart trouble, at his residence in Center Harbor, N. H. He was married Dec. 27, 1871, in Newark, N. Y., to Viola, daughter of John A, and Elizabeth (Failing)Vowers, who died on Sept. 10, less than six weeks after her husband. His two children, Clark Holbrook of Red Bank, N. J., and Mrs. Julian P. Smith, survive him
