In New England, an area of the country where 3 ½" holes are considered large diameter,we are starting to experiment with 5" and 6" holes. The results are excellent in some areas and poor in others. The geology of rock is the major consideration to account for the blasting results.

Marrow vein deposits will continue to be an important source of valuable minerals. Productivity per manshift is not keeping pace with operating costs. Increased mechanization of stoping operations must be obtained to create greater productivity at a reduced cost per ton. This application of mechanization may be to either present methods or to newly developed concepts. The total mine unit operations will be effected by increased productivity. Two approaches to increasing the mechanization of narrow vein stoping were studied with the intention of increasing stope productivity and decreasing stoping costs. A method of bringing efficient rubber-tired equipment into narrow cut and fill stopes was designed. It proposes to provide stope access by way of a ramp constructed on the stope fill. Impact breaking equipment was studied and specific applications proposed.

The investigation of organic compounds in respiratory coal dust by high-resolution mass spectrometry has shown that the organic components differ (1) with particle size, (2) with rank of coal, (3) in coals of same rank from different coal seams, and (4) in respirable mine dust and respirable coal dust (prepared) from the same mine. The eight respirable mine dusts studied are from coal seams in the Appalachian region where the incidence of coal workers' pnumoconiosis is relatively high. The molecular weights of the major organic components vary greatly among these respirable mine dusts; three show strong concentrations of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons.

Laboratory tests on three commercial methane detectors, two combustion- type detectors and one interferometer-type detector, were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine their response to certain single and multiple flammable gases mixed with normal and abnormal air atmospheres. Although both types of detectors responded accurately to methane-normal air mixtures, they did not show correct concentrations for other single flammable gases in air. Uniquely, the response of the interferometer-type detector to hydrogen was in a negative direction. The effects of individual gases in multiple flammable gas mixtures were approximately additive. In oxygen-deficient atmospheres the methane response of the interferometer-type detector erred on the high side, but only in very low oxygen concentrations were the combustion-type detectors affected-- showing low, erratic methane readings.

"Recycling of industrial waste provided they have enough valuable elements requires significantly less investment compared with ore processing. Promising man-made raw material of rare earth elements (REE) is phosphogypsum. Works performed on dismantlement of phosphogypsum only concern phosphogypsum processing from apatit. In this case, none of the developments was tested for phosphogypsum produced on the basis of phosphorus, chemical and mineralogical composition of which is markedly different from apatites. We studied phosphorites of the Karatau deposits (Kazakhstan). Mineralogically all the layers are composed of three main ingredients: phosphate, silica and carbonate, which account for 92-96% of the weight composition of ores and rocks. Of impurities there are pyrite, iron hydroxides, gypsum, fluorite. In addition to the actual composition of phosphate in phosphate ores there are apatite. Silica is presented by chalcedony and quartz, and carbonate by calcite and dolomite. The results of X-ray microanalysis showed point cluster of grains containing REE in samples of phosphate ore. Analysis of the grain showed that REE are in the form of phosphates and silicates, which according to numerous studies in apatites is not established. In this regard, phosphogypsum, waste of production, is different in composition too. Therefore, transfer of techniques proposed in the methods for extracting REE from phosphogypsum after processing apatite, did not give the stated results and required a new approach to solving this problem. It should be noted that the phosphogypsum produced by processing the Karatau phosphorite contains medium group of REE by 2.6, and heavy group by 7.8 times more than phosphogypsum from processing the Kola apatite. Given the shortage of medium and heavy REE research to develop ways to extract the lanthanides from phosphogypsum after processing phosphate rock is promising. The study contains results of studies on the extraction of REE from phosphogypsum after Karatau phosphorite processing."

THE Eastern Magnetite Industry produced approximately 7,850,000 long tons of crude ore in 1945 from which was obtained approximately 3,650,000 long tons of shipping product or a ratio of 2.10 to 1. Lack of skilled or experienced miners was the greatest handicap. Veterans returning to work improved the underground labor shortage in some localities but as a whole the labor shortage was keenly felt throughout the industry. One cannot now predict what may be accomplished in 1946 but barring major steel strikes a worthwhile improvement can be expected. At the Richard mine of the Richard Ore Co., the shipping product for the year amounted to approximately 124,650 long tons of concentrate and lump ore. Crude-ore production was 160,600 long tons. The average analysis for lump ore was 63 per cent iron and for concentrates 66.05 per cent. The Warren Foundry and Pipe Corp. at their Mt. Hope mine produced 73,000 long tons of lump ore averaging 59.5 per cent and 57,000 long tons of concentrate averaging 67 per cent. The total mine hoist was approximately 209,000 long tons. Operations were commenced through the new Leonard shaft on Jan. 18; the Brown shaft through which operations had been conducted since 1912 caved beyond repair on Sept. 26. No one was injured but pumping facilities were somewhat disrupted. In order to reach designed capacity a total of 400 men will be required with 300 underground. Due to shortage of labor all operations in 1945 were concentrated on the 1700 level. As fast as men can be hired and trained development of the 2100 and 2500 levels will commence. Mt. Summarized Foreword This paper is one of a series arranged by Institute Divisional Committees for the Fiftieth Anniversary Meeting, reviewing the experience of the major mining and metallurgical industries during the life of the Institute. The viewpoint is national and broadly technical. Geology is stressed on a continental scale without regard for provincial boundaries. The boundary between Canada and the United States is, however, so decisive a factor in our coal-mining economics and our political evolution that mention of its implications cannot be avoided. The Laurentian Shield in Canada makes the occurrence of coal deposits a geological impossibility between the St. Lawrence Lowlands and the Great Plains. All but five per cent of Canadian coal resources occur west of Winnipeg. The utilization of this ninety-five per cent of our coal wealth has to date been a consequence of transcontinental railways' development, and the small fuel needs of thinly populated wheat farming and cattle-raising territory, in what- to judge from the development of mixed farming and greater population density of Manitoba- is merely an initial stage of agricultural intensification and accordant population growth. There is no useful purpose in measuring coal resource against consumption rate in the West as a whole, because the resource is but partially known, and it is difficult to believe that industrialism based upon coal utilization is in any but its infant stage of growth. Canada west of Winnipeg possesses, moreover resources of petroleum and natural gas, which, together with the power-potential in the long watershed of the eastern slope of the Rocky mountains, give to population centres such as Calgary and Edmonton a choice of energy resources that is almost an embarrass des riches.

[The steady increase of aluminum production means a corresponding increase of carbon consumption in the alumina-reduction cells. Improved petroleum techniques constantly reduce the amount of byproduct petroleum-coke production. These, trends threaten the alumina-reduction works with possible shortages of carbon, which must be supplied from some other source. In anticipation of this shortages, an investigation into the possibility of using coal as an alternative source of carbon was begun at the Northwest Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The investigation lit has developed bench-scale methods that produce carbon of higher purity than is required by specifications for anode carbon. Additional work will b required to bring these processes to pilot-plant seals and to prove the suitability of the carbons, produced or aluminum-anode consumption.]

The material that forms the basis of this paper was collected in the spring of 1922, during a ten-day visit to Ducktown by the writer in the company of Prof. L. C. Graton. The time available for the work was far too short to allow anything like a thorough study of the deposits, and structural and stratigraphic questions, though they have an important bearing on the origin of the primary ores, were necessarily left untouched. Attention was focussed on the zone of oxidation and enrichment; and by devoting most of our time to the upper levels, open pits, and old workings, and examining the deeper levels only thoroughly enough to obtain a fair idea of the nature of the primary sulfide ore, we were able to make a reasonably complete survey of the various orebodies. With this field work for a background, the writer later made a study, in the Harvard laboratories, of the specimens obtained during the visit. As some of the facts brought to light by this study appear to be new, it seems worth while to set forth the outstanding features and a proposed explanation of them. Much of the Ducktown material that is obviously of greatest significance, as regards oxidation and enrichment, is soft and crumbly. Notwithstanding the desirability of gaining from such material all possible information as to its mineral composition and textural relationships, but little has heretofore been learned regarding it; but, by suitable preparation of this material in connection with the present study, it has been possible to examine it under the microscope without any disturbance of its texture and about as satisfactorily as if it were hard, fresh ore. The information thus gained has contributed measurably to the results set forth in this paper.

"INTRODUCTION Wood burned for commercial heat and power usually is waste material from some manufacturing process. The amount of it reaches substantial proportions. It is estimated that over 50 percent of the timber cut for lumber becomes ""waste"" in the process - sawdust, shavings, trimmings, slabs, and bark. Woodworking manufacturing processes also produce much waste. The incentive to use this waste has resulted in much development of wood-burning equipment to produce heat and power. To answer general inquiries received by the Bureau, this publication covering developments along these lines was written. Moisture is essentially always associated with wood. Green wood contains approximately 30 to 50 percent moisture; air-dried or seasoned wood contains 15 to 25 percent and kiln-dried about 8 percent. Exposed to the weather, wood absorbs and gives off moisture depending on weather conditions and water contact.""Dry"" wood ignites relatively quickly and readily gives off volatile matter when heated. Long flames and smoke easily occur during burning. The burning action is substantially retarded, however, by appreciable moisture content; ignition is more difficult. When the moisture content is more than about 70 percent, an auxiliary fuel is required to maintain combustion. One of the main factors in the problem of the satisfactory and smokeless combustion of wood is its moisture content."

This paper provides a brief overview of evolution of deformations, stresses, and pore pressures due to different excavation stages during construction of an URL. Excavation of a rockmass develops a damage zone of finite width around the excavated zone which is associated with changes in permeability and which affects the fluid flow mechanism. In this study, a coupled hydromechanical (HM) analysis has been conducted for a water saturated porous rock mass which has been created by sequential excavation and backfill of vertical disposal pit of an URL. For this purpose, an Atomic Energy of Canada Limited?s in-floor concept for a deep geologic repository suitable for Indian conditions has been used. Changes in rock deformations, stresses, strains and mechanically induced pore pressure in an undrained condition, during excavation, as well as those caused by mechanically induced rock deformations after backfill of the disposal pit, have been modeled. A three-dimensional finite difference tool FLAC3D has been used for the analysis.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 191 natural gas samples from 22 states and 1 foreign country. Of the total samples, 182 were collected during calendar year 1987. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received before 1987. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

From 1955 to 1958 the Phillips Petroleum Co. conducted a series of small scale counterflow combustion field tests in a tar sand about 60-ft deep and 6 to 12-ft thick near Bellamy, Mo. A total of seven different well patterns, including conventional five-spots and seven-spots plus a 15-well line drive pattern and a 10-well radial pattern, were employed. Electric heaters, gas burners and wellbore fuel packs were tested as counterflow ignition devices. Direct drive ignition followed by reversal to counterflow operation was not possible in this case because of formation plugging by the semi-solid tar during the direct drive phase. Sustained counterflow burning was achieved with wellbore fuel packs under conirolled conditions which permitted close correlation of fire front velocity, air velocity, air-oil ratios and yields for a wide variation in process parameters. The tar in place was about 10' APl with a reservoir viscosity greater than 500,000 cp. The composite oil prodlcct was 26' API with a viscosity in the range of 5 to 15 cp. Vertical sweep efficiency in the line drive pattern was essentially 100 per cent, with no evidence of gravity segregation. Original tar in place ranged between 800 and 1,000 bbllacre-ft, specific rock permeability averaged about 800 md before burning and effective air pemeability with residual oil and water in place (at the time of ignition) averaged 250 md. The volume of oil recovered during stabilized line drive counterflow burning represented about 67 per cent of the volume of tar originally in place in the burned out zones. A minimum was found when air-oil ratios were plotted against formation air velocities, and a limiting air velocity existed below which the counterflow fire front reversed and burned back over its own trajectory, using the residual coke left behind. INTRODUCTION Early in 1955 the Phillips Petroleum Co. began preparations to field test counterflow underground combustion as a method for producing oil from high viscosity hydrocarbon deposits, such as bituminous (tar) sands. At that time all published information on the use of underground burning io increase oil recovery was based on the direct drive process, in which the fire front moved through the formatim in the same direction as the injected air stream. Such direct burning is not applicable to many heavy oil sands or to most tar sands because the heat-thinned native hydrocarbon congeals in the cold rock ahead of the fire front forming a gas permeability block which smothers the combustion. Laboratory experiments first demonstrated that this permeability blocking would not occur if the fire front and the air stream moved in opposite directions. In this counterflow (reverse) burning process the heated heavy oil or tar is driven back through the combustion zone. Here thermal cracking produces relatively light hydrocarbon products which pass through the heated rock behind the fire front (largely in the vapor phase) and are incapable of causing a gas permeability block.' Exploratory wring revealed that consolidated bituminous sandstones with a combination of tar saturation, permeability, thickness and depth favorable for experimental field testing existed at several points in western Missouri. By the fall of 1955, a test site for determining technical feasibility of the counterflow process under field conditions had been selected near Bellamy, Vernon County, Mo. — about fifty miles north of Joplin. The pay zone was too thin and too shallow to constitute a commercial prospect, but these same factors permitted controlled experimental operation with a small compressor installation and with a large number of monitor wells. These were needed for adequate observation of the underground phenomena at reasonable cost. RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS The reservoir chosen for the experimental field tests was a 124 thick section of tar sand extending from 49 to 61 ft subsurface, with shale and siltstone laminations sealing the top and bottom. This section was part of a larger 30-ft thick tar sand deposit which extended both above and below the test zone. Core analyses showed that the 12-ft sand was effectively subdivided into two approximately equal sections, with the lower zone being consistently more permeable than the upper zone. The most significant laboratory core data are summarized in Table 1. The line drive test which is the principal subject of this report utilized only the lower 6-ft thick zone, with the upper zone regarded as part of the 55-ft overburden. WELL PATTERNS The over-all field test program involved a total of seven different well patterns, including conventional five-spots and seven-spots plus a 15-well line drive pattern and a 10-well radial pattern. "The Agnew (also known as the Perseverance) nickel deposit and its northern extension, the Rocky's Reward deposit, form one of the world's largest accumulations of nickel sulphides hosted by komatiites. Agnew was previously classified as an ""intrusive dunite-associated"" deposit . It has now been shown that the sulphides are hosted by komatiite flows which underlie an adcumulate-textured dunite body that crystallized in a large lava channel.The rocks of the mine area have been subjected to a metamorphic temperature of550°C and pressure of up to 3 kb. The komatiites have mostly been reconstituted to olivine-amphibole chlorite assemblages. There is a zoned sequence of enstatite-, anthophylite-, talc- and antigorite-bearing assemblages inwards from the western margin of the ultramatic reflecting variations in the CO/HP ratio of metamorphic fluids.Facing directions are determined from variations in the proportions of metamorphic minerals and in rock compositions which reflect asymmetric layering in the flows . Olivine-sulphides matrix ore is hosted in a single 50 m thick, east-facing flow that is overlain by flows containing massive sulphides. Much of the massive sulphide has been physically remobilized into fold noses, faults and shear zones. Chemical diffusion of ore components has upgraded a sulphide-rich metasedimentary unit where it is in structural contact with massive ore.To the north, the mineralized flow sequence is separated from a stratigraphically higher komatiite sequence, the Perseverance ultramafic complex, by approximately 150 m of felsic meta volcanic and meta sedimentary rocks. Southward, the Perseverance ultramafic grades laterally into an olivine adcumulate body and its lower contact cuts progressively down stratigraphy until it lies directly on top of olivine-sulphide ore of the mineralized flow sequence. This discordant contact is interpreted as the base of a thermal erosion channel formed by a voluminous komatiite lava flow. This contact greatly influenced later deformation of the mineralized flow sequence."

Iron ore samples representing the input and output of several jigging experiments were analysed to determine the effect of particle size, shape, and density on jigging performance. Traditionally, the manual measurement of the size and shape of individual particles is very tedious and prone to inaccuracies and inconsistencies. Using a novel multi-view imaging technique the 3-dimensional representations of each particle in the sample was determined. From this representation several size and shape measurements were extracted, and these were correlated with the individual particle density measurements. A rigorous investigation into the confidence associated with density and the size and shape features as a function of sample size was conducted, thus allowing the significance of correlations in the data to be determined. The jig?s performance was seen to be clearly sensitive to density and markedly so to particle size, while the results for shape indicated the need for continued work in the definition of particle shape.

"IntroductionIN 1940, in a series of articles, M. W. von Bernewitz(l) reviewed in detail roasting of gold and silver sulphide ores and concentrates. Since that time some significant developments in roasting have taken place, and a number of papers have appeared in the Canadian technical literature, dealing severally with the roasting of a particular ore or concentrate.The purpose of this paper is not only to review some of these Canadian papers and bring the information on Canadian roasting practices to .date, but also to analyse the mechanism of roasting. Hence, it is proposed to start with a study of physico-cl1emical factors fundamental in roasting, the knowledge of which, by creating a sound basis for a proper roaster design, makes good roasting possible.Physico-Chemical FactorsRoasting can be defined as heating sulphide ores in presence of air below fusion points of the constituent minerals, at such temperatures as to convert metallic sulphides to oxides. Hence, roasting is a chemical process.The object of roasting is, by changing, chemically, mineral constituents of sulphide ores, to make the economic recovery of the desired •Constituent metal by a subsequent standard treatment possible. For instance, pyritic ores, containing gold in sub-microscopic form which no amount of grinding would release, are roasted in order, by oxidizing the sulphides, to open up their structures to such an extent as to enable cyanide solutions to come into contact with the gold and dissolve it. The production of porous calcine is, therefore, the object of roasting of refractory auriferous sulphide ores or concentrates. Such a porous calcine may be defined as a desirable calcine, and the roasts which produce desirable calcines can in their turn be termed desirable roasts."
