This paper presents a review of research conducted at the University of Waterloo concerned with the application of aluminum alloy sheet and tube in automotive structures and body panels. The research has focussed on formability prediction and results using a range of damage-based formulations. These models include continuum-level damage approaches and, more recently, a so-called percolation damage approach intended to capture microstructural heterogeneity effects on damage development. This paper presents applications of these damage approaches to simulate formability of experiments considering stretch flange panels. The experiments consider drawbead effects associated with the bend/unbend deformation as the material flows through the drawbead. Recent work on simulating in situ X-ray tomography experiments that capture damage evolution during tensile deformation will also be reviewed.

A study of the accident statistics in the coal mining industry convinces one that an organized effort must be put forth to prevent the vast destruction of human life in this industry . The fatality rate in Pennsylvania has not improved in the past several years and during 1928 it was higher than the average for the period 1916 to 1927 , inclusive . Although the accident rate for this State is less than that of the coal mines of the United States as a whole , nevertheless the rate is unduly high ; however , there are many companies which have exceptionally good records as regards both fatal and nonfatal accidents . A study of the methods used by some of these relatively good- record companies to reduce accidents in their mines shows that they exert an organized effort to prevent accidents , and that their safety organizations usually affect every employee in and about the mine from the highest official to the check boy . The chief executive must be actively and personally interested in accident prevention if real safety results are to be obtained ; when he shows this interest it is almost invariably reflected in the officials under him and throughout the organization . Safety organizations vary in form and are readily changed or adapted to the varying conditions found in the bituminous field . The companies whose organizations were studied in preparing this report are all getting good results , and it is their opinion that the safety organizations have been a big factor in obtaining these results . At their request the identity of some of the companies whose organizations were studied has not been divulged in this paper , but this does not affect the value of the information concerning their safety organizations .

At the last meeting of the Institute, several contributions were made to the subject of miners' aid funds. Such matters will always form important factors in the administration of large industrial enterprises. From the frequently remote and isolated position of mining properties, it is a subject that often forces itself upon the attention of the mining engineer. Local conditions are usually so variable that no single method can be found equally well adapted to all localities. At the same time, a study of different types is often suggestive and valuable, and it is with this in view that these notes are presented. The Miners' Fund of New Almaden is a remarkably successful example of what may be done for miners by a wise and at the same time firm management, by simply directing their own efforts and without incurring any great expense to the stockholders,—a practical consideration not without importance in most cases. Utilizou-se o metal de adição 22.12.HT e diferentes gases de proteção: 100% Ar, Ar + 2% CO2, Ar +4% CO2 e Ar + 20% CO2. Para cada mistura gasosa, foi soldado um corpo de prova. Estudouse a variação das frações volumétricas de ferrita delta em função dos diferentes gases de proteção utilizados. Observou-se aumento no teor de carbono e consequente diminuição das frações volumétricas de ferrita delta nos metais depositados com gases de proteção com maiores concentrações de CO2, evidenciando-se que o carbono é um forte estabilizador da austenita nos aços inoxidáveis austeníticos.

Corporate requirements are closely aligned with the GARD Guide principles of early geochemical characterization and prediction followed by selection and implementation of management strategies to prevent or minimize ARD. Each operation is required to design and implement an ARD and Mineral Waste Management Plan. Successful implementation of the plan requires commitment at all levels of the company, from senior management, to geologists, mine planners, environmental staff and equipment operators. Examples of the successful integration of ARD management strategies into mine operations are cited from several mines.

From a scientific point of view , the zircon is by far the most remarkable of the gem stones , and a satisfactory solution of the problems offered by its characters and constitution has not yet been made . 3 Three distinct forms have been recognized , differing in specific gravity , hardness , optical properties , behavior when heated , and color.4 ( See section of this paper entitled "Description and Properties . " ) Zircon as a gem stone has not been as well known as its properties warrant . It is one of the most brilliant of the precious stones (having a high refractive index) . The colorless zircon rivals the diamond in brilliance and fire play to such an extent that a judgment based entirely upon optical inspection might be erroneous . In the opinion of gem authorities , the colored stones likewise have much merit . The blue zircon ( " Starlite" ) was so named by Kunz because of its resemblance to a " star twinkling in the night . " Another gem authority describes the leaf- green stone as one possessing a restful beauty , the red stone as having a certain ( though somber) grandeur , and the golden-yellow stone as being unsurpassed in magnificence . The slowness with which the zircon , a stone frequently mentioned in ancient literature , has come into use in modern jewelery may be owing to the fact that authorities differ as to whether the colorless and the blue zircons are found as such in nature or are treated stones . Any treated stone , although the material of which it is composed may be essentially genuine , has been considered a deception . However , according to Kunz , " Starlite is now sold over the entire world ; never has anything been so well introduced. "7 Dr. Foshag, mineral curator of the United States National Museum, states that the first allotment of zircons to enter the United States was obtained in 1921 from Siam ( through France ) for scientific or museum purposes and that four or five years later the stones were adopted by the jewelers of this country . Retail jewelers are displaying the colorless type and the blue stones , especially , in finger rings , necklaces , and like ornaments . Fine crystals have been used somewhat extensively in jewelling watches and as supports for the edges of fine balances . At one time zircons were though to be appropriate in mourning jewelery .

Continuous experimentation utilizing a 3- by 36 - foot rotary kiln was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of simultaneous induration and reduction of magnetic taconite concentrate . Lignite , or lignite - anthracite mixtures , and green magnetite pellets (64.2 percent Fe , dry basis ) were heated in a rotary kiln to about 2,100 ° F. After separation from excess reductant , the product pellets were found to be highly reduced and acceptably hard . A total of 140 tons of prereduced pellets with an average Fe content of 79.0 percent was produced at Minneapolis and smelted in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace at Bruceton , Pa . Two additional supplies of prereduced pellets were obtained from The Steel Company of Canada , Ltd. , Hamilton , Ontario , which contained 83.8 and 91.3 percent Fe , respectively . Smelting of prereduced pellets was compared with that of unreduced pellets obtained from The Hilton Mines , Shawville , Quebec , and from the Erie Mining Co. , Hoyt Lakes , Minn . Blast furnace tests established that a substantial decrease in coke rates and higher production result from the use of prereduced pellets .

This review work reports the recovery of potassiumfromdifferent rocks and mineral sources. The global demand for potassiumis rising consistently due to the growth of agricultural production. A major portion of the world potassium production is consumed in making of fertiliser; however, other uses include those in pharmaceutical, glass, ceramic, food and detergent industries. The availability of soluble potash minerals (sylvite, kainite and carnallite) in different countries like Canada, USA, Israel and Russia makes them as major potash producers, whereas agricultural-based countries like Liberia, Somalia, Central African Republic, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia including India meet their potassium requirement through import only. On the contrary, the availability of huge potassium-bearing rocks/minerals (like nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica, glauconitic sandstone) in these countries containing around 4–17% K2O would be a prospective for commercial production of potassium. The potassium recovery from minerals/rocks is very complicated due to the uniform distribution of potassium throughout the crystal structure. Different physico-chemical separation methods like bioleaching, chemical leaching, flotation and roast leaching have been discussed for the successful recovery of potash values from these rocks/minerals. However, the recovery of potassium from hugely available seawater using the chemical precipitation, solvent extraction,membrane separation and ionic exchangemethods is not cost-effective due to the low concentration of potassium.

The Huber-Rydalch manganese property is in the Erickson mining district of Tooele County, Utah. The district covers the southern part of Simpson Mountains, a block rising abruptly above the surrounding desert floor (fig. 1). The Ruber-Rydalch deposits and other deposits in the Simpson Mountains manganese area were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers during 1940 and 1942 under the strategic minerals program. J. T. Pardee visited the district briefly in 1918. A. E. Granger and A. F. Shride, of the Federal Geological Survey, mapped the geology of the area in 1942 and 1943. The manganese deposits occur as veinlike masses in brecciated fault zones that traverse Cambrian and pre-Cambrian quartzite, quartzite conglomerate, and phyllite. The deposits now exposed near the surface represent the oxidized portions of primary mineralization originally containing rhodochrosite and rhodonite associated with quartz and calcite and small quantities of pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite. The oxide ore is composed of manganite, pyrolusite, psilomelans, and wad in a gangue of quartz, calcite, and brecciated quartzite.

Excavation of vertical and/or inclined shafts in the underground structures requiring careful design and planning. Raise Boring Machines (RBMs) are commonly used for excavation of shafts for different purposes such as ventilation, orepass, and human-material transportation. Proper selection and accurate performance prediction of RBMs are two main parameters affecting the cost estimation and planning/scheduling. Indentation test is one of the most preferred methods that can be used to predict advance rate of RBMs. This study aims at suggestion of new prediction model for instantaneous penetration rate of RBMs based on indentation tests. Different rock (core) samples (with different geological origins) are obtained from the raise boring application projects in Turkey; then, the indentation tests are carried out on them by using a real-life insert (button), which is used in reamerhead cutters investigated in this study. Finally, the statistical relationships between the field performance and the indentation indices are investigated. The study indicates that the brittleness index (the ratio of maximum applied force to corresponding penetration) can be used to predict instantaneous penetration rate of RBMs used in the vertical raise bored shafts excavating rocks having uniaxial compressive strength lower than 100 MPa.

The first record of coal discovery in Australia dates back to 1791 when escaping convicts found coal in the banks of a creek just south of Newcastle. Development in the Newcastle Coalfield was the sole source of supply for the colony and for export until the 1850s when mines were established in the Southern & Western Coalfields. The important Hunter Coalfield was not discovered until 1873 when coal was found at Rixs Creek near Singleton: The first exploration drillholes were commenced in 1799 using drilling equipment obtained by Sir Joseph Banks. From 1820 to 1850 several famous geologists (naturalists), including the Rev W. B. Clarke, J. D. Dana and Strzelecki, wrote reports on the coal measures in New South Wales. The first Government Geo- logist, Samuel Stutchbury, was appointed in 1850. The major coal deposits of the State are contained in Permian Coal Measures in the Sydney-Gunnedah and Oaklands Basins. Coal quality ranges from high volatile, high moisture thermal coal at Oaklands to low volatile hard coking coal in the Southern Coalfield. Most coalfields can provide a range of steaming and coking coals.

Consensus-based approaches are becoming the most popularly applied way of achieving meaningful public participation. This paper introduces the principles surrounding consensus-building approaches and the processes for getting them started. The Healthy Communities Movement is one such consensus-based approach that offers a well-established holistic model for conceptualizing a healthy sustainable community. It also highlights the importance of public participation as an essential component of achieving a sustainable community. The paper concludes by illustrating how current company-community relations programs can utilize these models.

Pittini Group has contracted Danieli in 2011 for the supply and replacement of the existing EAF at Ferriere Nord Plant in Osoppo. This was a very challenging project: giving the fact that the Meltshop was operating already under very high performance level, there were many elements involved for the project to improve (reduce the amount of charges, promote highest possible chemical energy utilization, allow best optimization on existing transformer power, modification on Drop Out box and Water Cooled Duct, Hydraulic System for EAF, Scrap Bucket design to fit to new EAF with existing loading and transport system, Automation System Review and Upgrade) as well as limitations of the existing installation (limited space, lifting capacity building and cranes and the required solutions for fast shell and roof exchange). All furnace parts, as well as installation engineering, were developed and discussed carefully with the Customer to either provide proven and reliable concepts, but also to define solutions for fast installation/maintenance access and quick exchange for offline turnaround. In the end, from disassembly of existing equipment up to the first heat of the new furnace, only 38 days were necessary. First heat was made on January 24th 2013, on the 6th production day 32 heats where produced at nominal design capacity and 28 days after start up 100,000 t liquid steel have already been produced.

STATNAMIC load testing augmented with embedded instrumentation has been successfully used to obtain structural and geotechnical design information on large diameter spun cast concrete cylinder piles on many large marine construction projects. The paper focuses on one particularly interesting large marine project involving a new bridge to St. George Island, Florida where instrumentation and STATNAMIC load testing was used in conjunction with static load testing on high capacity piles. The information presented includes embedded instrumentation measurements taken during pile fabrication (post-tensioning), during pile driving, during static load testing, and STATNAMIC load testing. As much of this data is the first of its kind on concrete cylinder piles, it is exciting to present the foundation industry with this additional insight as to the behavior of this pile type and the accuracy of the methods used to test them.

The object of this program was to design and build a self-contained system for remote monitoring of the atmosphere in mines. The system developed uses the mine pager phone line as the primary communication channel and also has the capability of using 208 Hz in the ELF band for wireless transmission through the earth. The depth for through-the-earth transmission is expected to be about 80 to 90 meters in high conductivity soil and is limited by the noise level in the ELF band-pass filters. The underground components of the TEM System are energized by mine power through a battery charger - storage battery power supply. In the event of mine power failure the battery capacity is more than sufficient for one week's operation with interrogations every four hours.

This bulletin abstracts and reviews essential details of reports on 59 fires in different coal mines in the United States, describes the circumstances of origin and the methods of controlling or extinguishing the fires, and points out the lessons taught. all, the fires caused great damage to property and killed nearly 400 men. The data have been compiled from the records of the Bureau of Mines, which cover most of the major mine accidents in the United States since 1.908. The names of the mines concerned and of the persons connected with the management of those mines have been omitted in accordance with the usual policy of the bureau. The bureau hopes that this bulletin will be of service to all persons interested in lessening the fire hazard at coal mines and to all who may be called on to fight a mine fire.

This bulletin is a revision of Bulletin 63 and is published by the Bureau of Mines in order that purchasers of coal for Government, State, municipal, or private use may be informed regarding advances or refinements in sampling coal deliveries and preparing specifications for the purchase of coal. The purchase of coal by the Government under specifications depending on the heating value of the coal, its content of ash and of moisture, and other considerations, rather than upon the reputation or trade name of the coal, was based on the fuel investigations begun by the Technologic Branch of the United States Geological Survey in 1904. The plan was first adopted by the Treasury Department in 1906. Since then the plan, variously modified in form, but the same in principle, has been gradually adopted by other departments until, at present, of the coal used by the Government, the total value of which approximates $8,000,000 annually, more than half is purchased under specifications. The Government publications dealing with the adoption by the Government of the specification plan, the number of contracts awarded on that basis, and the quality of the coal delivered under such contracts in the several fiscal years covered by the reports are given in publioations a listed at the end of this bulletin. Under the authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for analyzing and testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the headquarters of the Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C., where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased under specifications for Government use are analyzed and tested. At this laboratory more than 1,200 samples have been analyzed and tested in one month. With the complete equipment and the efficient force employed, the analytical work has been so perfected that the analyses and heating-value tests of the samples received are as accurate as may be reasonably expected in laboratory work of this nature. One of the serious drawbacks to the general adoption of the specification method for the purchase of coal is the difficulty of obtaining at reasonable cost samples of coal that can be considered fairly representative of the commercial product delivered in wagons, railroad cars, or ships. Therefore the method of taking and preparing samples for shipment to the laboratory has been given fully as much care as the making of the analyses and tests, and a general plan of collecting samples fairly representative of the delivered coal has been evolved through various modifications and improvements based on experience and increased knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics of the various coals that are purchased by the Government. The method that is in general use by the Government is described in the following pages. In connection with studies of the coal deposits of the country, of the best methods of preventing waste in mining, and of increasing efficiency in the utilization of coal belonging to or for the use of the Government, geologists and engineers of the United States Geological Survey and of the Bureau of Mines have visited more than 2,500 coal mines scattered through all of the coal-producing States and Territories. From each mine 2 to 8 or more samples were taken, the number depending upon the size of the mine and its output. The analyses and descriptions of the samples collected up to the end of the fiscal year 1913 are published in Bureau of Mines bulletins 22 a and 85,b and those of samples collected in the fiscal years 1914 and 1915 are presented in a bulletin that will soon be published by the bureau. A study of the analyses of these samples and of the samples taken from cars shipped from a number of the same mines shows that the mine samples are as a rule of higher grade than the average commercial shipments, particularly with respect to containing a lower percentage of ash and having a correspondingly higher heating value. This difference is due to the fact that the Government inspector, proceeding on the basis of what can be done by a good miner, usually removes more of the partings of bone, slate, and other extraneous matter from his mine samples than the average miner does in ordinary practice, the aim of the miner being to get the maximum number of tons past the tipple inspection, as his earnings are based on his output. The average miner, therefore, does not always take as much care as he might in rejecting the impurities. FOR distinguished service in the art of hydrometallurgy, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America presented its gold medal to E. A. Cappelen Smith, at a dinner held in the Hotel Commodore, New York, on Nov.' 10, 1920. Prof. Waldemar Lindgren, president of the society, in giving the medal, said: "By the advancement of the science of hydrometallurgy, by the construction of plants on a scale audacious in their conception, by the successful overcoming of all sorts of difficulties, you have placed your name among those who occupy the very front rank among the hydrometallurgists. In recognition of this distinguished contribution to the science of metallurgy, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America now awards you its gold medal."
