The tremendous engineering advances occurring during this past century are very evident within the boundaries of the Anthracite Section of AIME. The Steelton plant of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, located along the Susquehanna River just east of the Commonwealth's capital at Harrisburg, for more than 105 years has experienced a most dynamic life which has paralleled America's industrial growth. (Figure 1) In June 1865, just after the Civil War, a group of men met to organize the Pennsylvania Steel Company. The war had brought into sharp focus the vital importance of the railroads to the country's expansion. Until that time wrought iron rails were used, and the replacing of track after only several months wear had become an almost unbearable cost. The spirit of free, competitive enterprise and the prospects of a lucrative market compelled these men to form that first Pennsylvania Steel Company and to develop better rail products. They issued the following statement: "...our desire to free ourselves from dependence upon a foreign market (has) led to the organization of the Pennsylvania Steel Company, and the parties who have connected themselves with it are determined to produce upon American soil all the principal manufactures of steel that are now, at such a serious cost for freight, commission, insurance, exchange, duty, etc., and often, with so much delay and uncertainty, imported from abroad. Extensive use is made of a small scale computer (IBM 1130), in the calculations of ore reserves for Western Mining Corporation's nickel mine at Kambalda, W.A. All surface drilling data such as assays, density and location information, are stored on disk files at the Company's Technical Computing Centre at Perth, W.A. The computer is used to search through the data, select significant ore intersections, calculate the area of influence of each intersection and perform the necessary calculations to arrive at an estimate of the ore reserve. This bulletin covers all mines in the United States that were operated in 1936 to produce metallic ores and all mines that were operated to produce nonmetallic minerals other than coal, stone, sand, gravel, or their products. Reports from mine operators revealed a better safety record for fatal accidents in 1936 than in any other year except 1934 during the 26 years for which annual surveys of accidents in the mineral industries of the United States have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines. On the other hand, the record for nonfatal injuries, although better in 1936 than in any year prior to 1930, was not as good as it was from 1930 to 1935, inclusive.

Barrick (Australia Pacific) Limited initiated a trial of Caterpillar’s Minegem autonomous loader technology in 2009 at the Kanowna Belle mine in Kalgoorlie. Autonomous loader technology offers the potential to improve loader productivity, reduce operating costs and improve safety through removing personnel from the mine operating environment. This paper discusses the implementation of the technology at the mine site, the data collected during the trial and quantifies the benefits of using automated loader technology in comparison with teleremote loader operation. The lessons learned from the trial and work planned for the future in respect of this technology is also discussed.

The authors investigated the nature, cause and treatment of 234 back injuries which occurred in 156 different situations in underground coal mines. A detailed interview was conducted with each injured miner as 137 variables were explored to provide a complete picture of the injury scenario. The miners worked at 23 mines in six states. An important finding of the study was that sudden movement, which occurred in 527 of the injuries, is a more frequent factor than heavy lifting in causing hack injuries. Along with sudden movement, other major injury causing factors were equipment seat design, lifting, cable handling, and slips/trips. No significant differences were found between the injury scenarios associated with lost time and non-lost time injuries; thus, both sets of scenarios should he used in doe loping back injury control strategies. Medical treatment and rehabilitation varied in content and quality. Dialogue between the medical, rehabilitation and mining communities is needed to develop an effective treatment strategy. Back injury control related training was found to be inadequate in most mines. Mine specific training for physical stress recognition and potential sudden torte release should he added to the training currently given. Based on the information collected in this study, recommendations were made regarding equipment design, mechanical assists and procedures for material handling, training, etc., which, if implemented, will assist in reducing the frequency of back injuries in underground coal mining.

THE sessions of the Institute were opened on Tuesday evening, October 26th, at Garrett's Hall, by Mr. Charles A. Otis, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements, who welcomed the Institute to Cleveland, and introduced Col. Charles Whittlesey, who ad¬dressed the Institute briefly on the coal deposits of Ohio. Col. Whittlesey described the situation and character of the coal-beds of the State, and gave a short history of the use of raw coal in the manufacture of pig-iron, and spoke of the excellent quality of metal produced. The aid that a body of scientific miners and metal¬lurgists were capable of giving in the development of coal and other mineral resources was dwelt upon, and the hope expressed that the visit of the Institute to Cleveland might be profitable as, well to its members as to the citizens of the State. The President, Mr. A. L. Holley, responded to the welcome of Mr. Otis and of Col. Whittlesey, and read an introductory address on Some Pressing Needs in the Iron and Steel Manufacture. Published or available data on safety in quarries are few except those pertaining to blasting issued by manufacturers of explosives. During the past 25 years the quarrying industry (including various types of quarries producing many different materials) has had a markedly improved accident experience. The downward trend has not been phenomenal or has it been uniform from year to year, owing to occasional major disasters; but from the information at hand it appears that improvement during the 25-year period has been definite.

WILBER JUDSON is one of that fairly large group of mining engineers that graduated at an Eastern college, worked his way up in various jobs in the West and in the Latin-American countries, and finally came to New York as an administrative officer of a large mining company. Since coming to New York he has been a loyal friend and counselor of the A.I.M.E., and is now serving a second term as one of its Directors, his first term covering the period 1935-1938. Mr. Judson was born in the capital city of Michigan on July 26, 1880. Probably it was his roving spirit rather than professorial urging that was responsible for the fact that four colleges were responsible for his education: Northwestern, University of Michigan, Harvard (S.B., 1901), and the Michigan College of Mines (graduate study). In his first ten years of professional work he might have been found serving as mine foreman at Catamarca in the Argentine, as superintendent of the Inter Ocean mine at Sunshine, Colo.. as foreman for the Cerro Prieto, Magdalena, Sonora, as superintendent of the Hudson Iron Co. in New York, or as manager of the Dolores mine in Chihuahua for the Mines Co. of America, or in Spain, or in Panama.

Those who use electric detonators in firing blasts will be interested in a new electrical testing instrument known as the ‘Blasters’ Friend’, recently devised by the New York Blasting Supply Co. of New York. Owing to the necessarily delicate construction of the platinum wire bridge in the shell of a detonator, it frequently happens that it becomes broken or disconnected; thus destroying the circuit and rendering the detonator worthless. In many cases, misfires and premature explosions are caused by defective detonators. Heretofore, to detect the deficiencies of a detonator before using has been an impossibility, owing to the absence of a testing instrument adapted to the purpose.

Small scale tests have been conducted in blasting vessels in the laboratory, where the effects of explosive composition, charge diameter, explosive confinement as well as additives to the explosive were examined on NO, NO2, CO and CO2 production. Fumes were analyzed continuously using a flue analyzer, providing analysis every 15 seconds. The results were compared to previous work conducted in the laboratory and to literature findings. It was found that the type of the explosive was the most dominant factor with emulsion explosives producing significantly less amounts of toxic gases. ANFO was shown to always produce nitrogen oxides, even when fuel rich. Tests were also conducted by detonating explosives in broken rock, simulating the release of products of detonation during the formation of a muckpile. Products of detonation were affected by the presence of atmospheric air or rock around the charge. Gaseous products of detonation migrated through the rock piles at different rates, resulting in a change of toxicity values over time. In the small scale experiments, CO appeared to travel faster than CO2 while NOX was not identified. Analysis of the gases that were released during digging, several hours after the blast, resulted in high temporary concentrations of toxic fumes.

The low-rank coals containing 10 to 50 pet natural bed moisture represent over half of the tonnage reserve of the available solid fuels of the United States, but only about 2 pet of United States coal production is derived from these fuels. Increased utilization of these large reserves will result if the bed moisture can be removed at the mine in high-speed low-cost processes. This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study of the factors affecting high-speed drying of coal dusts. The time required to heat particles of coal is proportional to the square of their diameter, and it is calculated that the probable time in minutes is equal to 6D2. In other words, a 11 a in. coal particle should be heated to drying temperature in 1.5 to 2.0 sec. Likewise, 1/8 in. particles should be heated in about 6 sec. The net heat required to dry subbituminous coal and lignite varies from 240 to 375 Btu per pound, depending upon the moisture removed, and this heat can be obtained from 42 to 61 cu ft of hot gases at 600°F.

Results of studies of reservoir and wax-precipitation temperatures relating to wax deposition in the reservoir of the Bradford oil field are presented in this report. During 1949 and 1950 Bureau of Mines engineers made temperature measurements in 42 wells, which indicate that the Bradford Third-sand temperatures range from 59.7° F., at 1,150 feet, to 71.9° F., at 2,040 feet. Reservoir temperatures measured at the same depths in newly drilled wells and oil-producing wells differed as much as 4.5u F. Injection-well temperatures measured during water injection showed that the temperature of the water entering the sand was 11.5° F. lower than reservoir temperatures before injection. The cooling in the formation resulting froth the injection of low-temperature water was 11.5° F. in the vicinity of the injection-well bore, and a maximum of 2.1° F. 200 feet from the injection well. Sand temperature, after 5 months of water injection, was reduced 1.5° F. 90 feet from water-injection wells. The temperature at which wax begins to precipitate from solution in crude oil was determined at atmospheric pressure for 26 samples and ranged from 51° to 67° F. Oil samples from wells producing no water had wax-precipitation temperatures ranging from 51° to 58° F. and wax contents from 2.20 to 2.97 weight percent, whereas the samples from wells producing water and oil had wax precipitation temperatures ranging from 580 to 67° F. and wax contents from 2.57 to 3.42 weight percent .

In this section of the province only the most meagre of surveys have been made and because these are not sufficient to determine with any degree of accuracy even the total forest area, the information presented in this paper is not complete. Area: -The area south of the Canadian National, and served by the Pacific Great Eastern, is roughly 38,000. square miles, 30,000 of which is classed as productive. This is approximately equal to the productive area of Norway, or half of Finland-or of 30 per cent of Sweden. It is larger than that of either Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Eliminating from the productive area 3600 square miles of grass-land and areas capable of agricultural development, 26,000 square miles (16,600,000 acres) remains as absolute forest-land, as compared with the 55,000,000 acres of Sweden, the 37,500,000 acres of Finland, the 17,000,000 acres of Norway, and the 7,600,000 acres of Austria.

Sampling tests performed at the Paradise Peak Mine compared various blasthole samplers and reverse circulation sampling methods. Statistical analysis of the data indicates that be-low-the-deck bag sampling produced a 24 to 29 percent error when compared to bulk sampling methods. Use of a chip pile wedge sampler reduced error to 17 percent. Reverse circulation sampling upgraded over bulk blasthole sampling by 7 percent for gold and 11 percent for silver. These results indicate that bias sampling conditions exist when small volume bag sampling is employed in production blasthole drilling.

During and immediately following World War II, the heavy demands for steel required the mining of unusually large quantities of coal for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The largest demand for metallurgical coke is in the Appalachian region, which comprises central and western Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. This demand is satisfied by coke made from coals within the region; consequently, the reserves of coking coal in this region are being depleted more rapidly than reserves in other coal-producing regions. The supply A' high-quality coking coal during the war was inadequate, and some coke were forced to use inferior coals. The coke produced from these inferior coals adversely affected the rate of production. Another national emergency probably would produce a similar condition, and in the interest of -national security, the Munitions Board of the National Military Establishment requested the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the reserves of coals suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. All bituminous coals in the Appalachian region are coking, and as the coal that produces the better metallurgical coke become depleted, other coal previously considered inferior will be used. The general trend is toward the use of lower-quality coals for metallurgical purposes.

The results of a laboratory investigation of coal cutting mechanics and noise is presented. These experiments were performed using a linear cutting apparatus that operates over a broad cutting speed range. The influence of several coal cutting parameters on the noise, force, productivity, and specific energy associated with linear cuts is ascertained. Some basic theoretical aspects of coal cutting mechanics and noise generation are discussed, and the results of the laboratory experiments are used to Formulate analytical models of the coal cutting forces and noise. The analytical model For coal cutting noise is then generalized to account for the more important effects of rotary cutting. Based on the generalized model, an estimate of the sound pressure level at an operator's position is made for a typical continuous mining machine. It is concluded that by employing linear rather than rotary cuts, using deeper depths of cut, slower cutting speeds, and more efficient cutting tools, it is possible to reduce the level of coal cutting noise, as well as Provide benefits to other important areas of underground health and safety.

The investigations on chemical composition, mineral composition, embedded figures, texture and microstructure of chrome ores were conducted systematically byvariousanalysismethodssuch aschemical analysis, XRF, SEM, and MLA 650 system. The results showed that there are 92.66% chromite and a small amount of chlorite and forsterite as the main mineral compositions, the content of quartz is very low. Elements as Cr and Fe are almost all present in chromite. The content of Cr O is 41.84% and Cr O /FeO is 2.1. The main ele- 2 3 2 3 ments in the chromite are Cr, Fe, Mg, Al, O; the main elements in the chlorite are Mg,Al,Si,OandasmallamountofFe;themainelementsintheforsteriteareMg, Si and O. On the basis of clarifying the mineralogical characteristics, to produce high-grade alloy, this ore should not be separately put into the submerged arc furnace without pretreating. However, it also seems to be difficult to separate the gangue compositions by the conventional physical upgrading methods, such as magneticseparationandgravityseparation.So,chemicalmineralprocessingshould be taken into account. The safety record of the coal-mining industry, both anthracite and bituminous, in 1966 was improved over that of 1965 in all general measures of injury experience. The improvement was more pronounced in the anthracite industry. The total of 10,679 disabling work injuries comprised 233 fatal and 10,466 nonfatal injuries, 26 and 692 fewer, respectively, than in 1965. The number of fatalities in 1966 was the lowest annual total since complete records were started in 1910. Similarly, the number of nonfatal injuries in 1966 was lower than in any year since 1930 when such data were first collected.
